15 Best Restaurants in Montpellier

Montpellier has quietly become one of the most exciting food cities in the south of France. While many travelers rush toward the beaches of the Mediterranean, those who linger in this sun-drenched university town are rewarded with a dining scene that feels both deeply Languedocian and refreshingly modern. From hidden squares in the historic Écusson to lively terraces near the Place de la Comédie, the city offers an impressive range of tables for every budget and craving.

The local cuisine here is anchored by the Mediterranean, but it also carries the rustic soul of the surrounding countryside. Expect olive oil from nearby groves, seafood hauled in from the Gulf of Lion, and the famous Pélardon goat cheese that appears on almost every serious cheese board. Yet Montpellier is not a city trapped in culinary tradition. A young, international population has fueled a wave of creative bistros, natural wine bars, and plant-focused kitchens that are pushing the boundaries of French dining.

What makes the restaurant landscape here so special is its walkability and intimacy. Many of the best addresses are tucked into narrow medieval streets, their tables spilling out onto cobblestones under the shade of plane trees. You can begin with oysters and a crisp Picpoul de Pinet at a market stall, then end the evening with a daring tasting menu in a candlelit cellar. The city rewards those who wander slowly and follow the scent of grilled fish or freshly baked fougasse.

For visitors, understanding the geography of Montpellier’s food scene helps tremendously. The historic center, known as the Écusson, is where you will find the highest concentration of atmospheric bistros and wine-focused spots. The neighborhoods of Antigone and Port Marianne offer more contemporary settings, often with larger dining rooms and sleek design. Meanwhile, the area around the Halles Castellane market remains a favorite for early lunches and people-watching with a glass of local rosé.

Choosing where to eat in a city with this much variety can be overwhelming, especially when you only have a few days to explore. The best approach is to mix classic Languedoc institutions with one or two forward-thinking newcomers. That balance gives you a true sense of how Montpellier respects its culinary roots while embracing global influences, from North African spices to Japanese precision.

Below is a carefully curated list of the best restaurants in Montpellier, selected for their consistency, atmosphere, and ability to represent the city’s diverse food culture. Each one offers something distinct, whether you are looking for a romantic dinner, a long lunch with friends, or a quick but unforgettable bite between sightseeing stops.

Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. We had booked inside as thought it might be cooler but without any aircon an outside table in the pretty square was a better choice. The manager was great, found us a table & helped with our wine choices. Both our dishes were delicious, a salmon on black risotto rice & a steak burger in a green bun😁. We shared the Greek yogurt with lemon desert which was very tasty. £60 for 2 was pretty good value so I’d recommend Le Bistrok. BTW it’s also a short downhill walk back to the #1 tram👍🏻

Delicious, fast, atmospheric. The guys have good taste in music. They try really hard. We had a great time.

Unique and full of character and humour. Terrific and original food and cocktails too. I was amused at the simple English while the French one was full of jokes !

The server was excellent and thoroughly explained the menu. The staff spoke both English and French. Friendly and accommodating. Every dish we tried was fantastic 😍

We passed through the city and we noticed this cute bistrot many times and we were willing to try it out. We got the chance to eat here for dinner and we were all positively surprised. The entrée were all very good, especially the original truffle croque monsieur that was amazing. The main course was great too! The risotto was super tasty, the bao burger original and flavorful, the meat with the bread gallette too! We took two glasses of wine that suited the meal just finely. The dessert was very generous, the vanilla ice cream in particular, and the chocolate cake amazing. Added to this, the two waiters were super nice and helpful, they explained the whole menu precisely and were very kind to us considered that we were not locals. I suggest to try this place at least once, even just to have a nice and enjoyable meal in a very cute and pleasant atmosphere in the center of Montpellier.

Beautiful restaurant with a beautiful menu. My friends who are locals took us here for an amazing and fulfilling meal. The burrata was great, and the duck confit was lovely. The walnut pasta was only okay though, lacked flavor. A friend put their burrata into their pasta which was interesting. I had a bite of the octopus and it was supper good!

The food and atmosphere are top notch! I suggest getting here before 12 because soon after there is a massive line to get seated. This is a place to practice patients if you are used to speedy servers. The food is worth the wait!
Dawid Stachura★★★★★
Special attention must be given to the quality of service, as it is often overlooked. The waitstaff here is an extremely tight-knit, well-organized, and incredibly fast team. Everyone is friendly, very helpful, and perfectly coordinated. Despite the high volume of customers every day, they are always impeccable. If I were the owner, I would give everyone a raise. In today’s world, good waiters are truly priceless. As for the food, it is one of a kind. I visited several times over a few days, and every time the dishes were delicious and carefully prepared. Special praise goes to the duck 🦆 — great job, chefs! If I lived in Montpellier, I would be a regular every day.

Such a wonderful find! Rosemarie is in a wonderful setting with friendly staff and great food at reasonable prices. Highly recommended. Make a reservation via their website and you can avoid the long wait line. Just go to the right side of the door when arriving and say "J'ai une reservation"!

Really good food, would recommend to try the buratta and the duck. Fast service, the deserts were so and so. Book in advance from the site so you don’t have to wait at the line.

Truly stunning in all aspects, very much worthy of the star. The decor and ambiance set the scene as soon as you enter. Wonderfully attentive team (who speak English, which adds to the experience for non/partial Francophones!). Exquisite tastes throughout. My favourite of all was the chocolate cased final dessert. So good I forgot to take a picture. Visited today for lunch. Will be back !

Had lunch today at this Michelin one-star restaurant in Montpellier — super convenient location near the old town! Overall, it was a nice experience. The dishes were creative, delicate, and well-executed, though not mind-blowingly amazing. But the value is great — only €59! It started with several small bites: The first was a chestnut “cream” soup, but actually more like a foam with chestnut bits. On top was a little biscuit — not really tasty but quite interesting haha! Another small bite was made with zucchini, topped with fish roe and yuzu — tangy and refreshing, with cream in the middle. The flavor was somewhere between savory and dessert, again, not particularly delicious. They also served some bread with fancy-looking but rather flavorless butter — at that point I thought, “uh oh, this might go downhill.” 😂 But then came the two appetizers — and I loved both! ✌️ The first one looked like a flower. The white part seemed to be potato, with herb ice cream in the center. It wasn’t sweet but super aromatic, highlighting the fresh flavor of potato and delicate truffle slices. The second was like a squid dumpling — the filling was tender squid pieces, and the wrapper reminded me of an egg dumpling, but bouncy and soft! The green sauce had a lovely hint of shiso (perilla). For the main course, I chose Beef from Aubrac, apparently a well-known French beef. It came with beet rolls topped with shrimp-roe crumbs. The beef was extremely tender — unlike any texture I’ve had before — very lean, soft, and juicy without much fat (personally not my favorite). The doneness was perfect though, and overall it was quite good, just not outstanding. Desserts were both really nice! The first one featured pear, coated with a thin layer of caramelized sugar, filled with pear chunks and chestnut cream — perfectly balanced sweetness and very seasonal! The second dessert was a black olive ice cream — incredibly fragrant 🥹 probably the most aromatic olive ice cream I’ve ever had. Underneath was dark chocolate mousse, light with a touch of cream and caramel. All in all, I think it’s a great-value Michelin experience — elegant, creative, and seasonal — just not as impressive as the one I had in Nice!

Wow! I would highly recommend this restaurant. In my two visits to France, this has been my best meal by far. I have been fortunate to dine at multiple Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, including Singapore, South Korea, France, and USA. In my previous experiences at these other restaurants, there was typically at least one dish that wasn’t quite successful. My experience at Leclère was different. I enjoyed every single dish! They were all delicious and well-balanced. The service was excellent. On top of that, I had a train to catch after my meal and they were able to accommodate my schedule very graciously.
Marco★★★★★
This has to be the best value for money I’ve ever been to. The ambiance is very laid back but classy. The set menu was very tasty and balanced. Wine menu is very approachable and not overpriced. Highly recommend! Great time here.

Truly perfect. Thank you for all the love and my birthday was just unforgettable! My wife and I had a moment that will last forever. We will be back! Keep up this wonderful work. See you soon!

It does not matter what age you are you will love the decoration. The place is so inviting and enjoyable. Service is very nice, we could get the place even without reservation. Food is very good, no it is great. Local craft beer and local wine. Enjoyed it absolutely and thoroughly. All recommendations. Combined with a beautiful city, what is there not to like.

Both the salmon and beef tatar were very fresh and delicious. The eggs mayonnaise were also delicious. Personally I prefer my beef tartar with the raw egg and to be able to mix the ingredients together myself, but I absolutely ate every morsel. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend 🇨🇦

A downhill experience. Booked a table for three, for a brunch. The food wasn't very good, but I was mostly shocked by the poor quality of the service. The staff didn't find our reservation and started to ask for proof of reservation -- understandable, but at least they could ask nicely. Then, ordering food was quite the adventure. Due to food restrictions and severe allergies, we had to ask a couple of questions. The staff didn't even know what was in the "homemade dip" and seemed frustrated we would even ask. When ordering another dish without the sauce, they answered -- rudely -- they couldn't because the sauce was already made -- understand that the whole dish was pre-made and likely just re-heated. After pushing back, we could finally get one made without the sauce. Well, neither the regular brunch nor the modified one was very good. Luckily, the meal was cheap. Food is a matter of taste -- but I would at least expect the staff to be polite.
Antoine Azar★★★★★
We booked online, got there our table was ready we didn’t have to wait at all. The staff was smiley and fun. We got two lunch menus, a mega cheeseburger each with comté and it was one of the best burgers I’ve had in france. They were out of pancakes so we took a cheesecake and a tiramisu. The cheesecakes missed crunch in the bottom and the tiramisu wasn’t special at all. However, we will come back for the pancakes !
Gabrielle Humphrey★★★★☆
It’s a nice restaurant for fussy eaters. Indeed the menu is made to ressemble a home meal. If you are with a group of people who cannot agree on what to eat, this is the place to go. It will appease tensions over the stressful “I don’t like anything on the menu”. The atmosphere is made to entertain and jog your childhood memory: board games, music playlist and other distractions from the food itself to stop fussy eaters desperately poring over the menu. No more than 2 or 3 ingredients per dish. We had a starter of chorizo falafels and courgette fritters followed by cheeseburger and beef chuck steak (typical French cut of beef, firm and tasty), generous portions of chips and side salad (as in salad leaves, French way). I was looking forward to the chips! They were well made. Pudding was a strawberry millefeuille. All in all, plenty to eat and good atmosphere that will appeal to the lost child in the grown ups and entertain the ones who never grew up.

The service at this restaurant is outstanding, and the staff goes above and beyond to ensure you enjoy your meal. If you’re looking for an upscale French dining experience, this is the perfect place. Be sure to arrive hungry—the many small dishes will leave you pleasantly full by the end of the meal.
Sarah Mathison Varillas★★★★★
Our meal was so enjoyable! This was our first Michelin experience and it was a blast! The atmosphere is very upscale, yet casual. You receive many appetizers before your selected course offerings begin. The entire meal was fantastic, but one of my favorites was an appetizer of a little cone with sardine and one kettle popcorn piece. It was so delicious and surprising! I would consider myself a very plain person in diet (typical American, ketchup kind of gal) so it was exciting to taste all new things and I told myself to just dive in & it was worth it. We chose the 8 course and it was very plentiful. The chef provided 2 surprise courses and one was my favorite of the meal portion, a little stew cup layering black truffle, stew jus with light potato layer. I’ve NEVER eaten octopus in my life, yet enjoyed one of the courses where it’s embedded. It’s very much worth the experience. The service is phenomenal, you’ll never have a need they don’t anticipate. The desserts are too good at the end.
Nikol Toneva★★★★★
Amazing place, everything from the food to the atmosphere and service is simply beyond perfect! All foods are extremely delicious, they started with many small dishes before the starters, which were great and diverse. The staff is very polite, professional, and knowledgeable of the foods and ingredients. The vibe of the place is calm, simple, modern, and the ceiling contributes great to the atmosphere. I highly recommend the restaurant. It is worth the visit a lot!!! I will be sure to come back for my next trip to Montpellier. Thank you to the staff of Jardin Des Sens!
Justine Lee★★★★★
We came here to experience a true Michelin star restaurant, and Le Jardin des Sens did NOT disappoint. We visited the bar first (A MUST DO just to see the amazing ambience) and sat for dinner at 8pm. We did the 8 course meal, which ended around 11pm. It was divine, and the service, food, attention to detail, plating, and ambience were amazing. Definitely worth eating here!
Max Zinner★★★★☆
We had the signature 13-course meal. Food was great, as expected by the price they are charging a the Michelin star. The atmosphere in the wonderful interior was also great. The service, unfortunately, was quite disappointing, e.g. - The email that it was my partner’s birthday was confirmed and I was promised a little attention. This was absolutely forgotten. - it was borderline impossible to get drinks given that there was no attention by the staff. Most telling of all: on my way home, they called me that the charged 100€ too little and I should come back. I told them I’d come back later that week. Until I came back (4 days later), they called me several times during my working hours to remind me to come.

There were many problems with the food. The salad was average and missing ingredients listed on the menu. The salad was also poorly prepared and it looked liked they just threw whatever they wanted into it. It was obviously poorly presented. Secondly the burger was wet pool of sauce. The bottom bun was completely soggy and fell apart once the wood skewer was removed. The fries were ok. In addition, the bathrooms were filthy and again our deserts weren’t even close to the menu description. The Mille feuille was just two biscuits with sweet syrup. Finally to make it worse they charged us the tip two times adding an extra 10 euros to the order. PLEASE do not come here unless you want under average food.
pat canada★★★★★
Wonderfully imagined food. Gravlax de truite was superb as was the chevre creme a l'abricot. Beautiful outdoor patios with great brunch on sundays.
Lee Heng★★★★☆
The service is really nice and friendly! It is a good place to have lunch/dinner with family and friends. You will have a big table and space to enjoy the food. I ordered the main dish pork, the pork is very tender with sweet source on top of it, the amount is big portion. The only thing is a bit oily, if they can reduce fat oil before put on the dish, it will be wonderful. The other part is about the background music, instead of bar music, it will be nicer to play some calm and slow music to match food style. In general, we had a very good time on it 😊
Jon Gledhill★★★★★
What a great choice!! We wondered around looking for somewhere and came across this surprising gem. The food was awesome and more than we expected. Would highly recommend this and would come back 100%..love the desserts in jars!!

That’s a good restaurant with nice wine. But overall o can’t say it’s a good price quality balance. I decided to give it a second chance to taste their menu from Chief. Overall staff is friendly and very nice. But it feels a bit messy

AMAZING meal here. Really one of the top dining experiences driven by the flavors, atmosphere, and stunning interior. The tasting menu was incredibly creative and blew us away. There was a good balance of seafood, meat and carb elements. I Was absolutely stuffed at the desert course, and I can eat a lot…

Young very talented chef, quality local products very well prepared and assembled. We recommend. And very pleasantly surprising. I had some food intolerances, and they called me prior our venue, to discuss and adapt the menu to my special needs. Very attentive indeed.
Alex Guts★★★★★
A wonderful experience from start to finish. Every course highlighted local products, and the wine pairing was well chosen. The caviar with chocolate was an unexpected gem. A must-visit for any true food enthusiast.
Katya★★★☆☆
Very mixed feelings about this restaurant. The food was outstanding. Every course was creative, beautifully presented, and genuinely delicious. The chef and kitchen team deserve a lot of praise, and I would happily return for the food alone. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality of the cuisine. One thing that surprised me was that the table was never properly cleaned between courses. Crumbs and remnants from previous dishes remained on the table while new plates were served. When I asked for the table to be cleaned, everything was simply brushed aside, and some cream ended up on my clothes. I was also surprised that there were no dish descriptions on the menu. As someone who speaks only a little French, I found it difficult to follow. There was no Wi-Fi available to translate the menu, and I was not offered an English version. I also noticed several tourists struggling to understand the explanations of the dishes. Unfortunately, there seemed to be little effort to adapt the explanations or help them feel included in the experience. The overall atmosphere of the service felt somewhat artificial. Smiles often appeared mandatory rather than genuine, which took away some of the warmth that fine dining should create. That said, I would like to specifically praise one waitress with long light-brown hair in a high ponytail. She stood out as the most professional member of the team, was attentive to guests, and seemed to handle many situations that others struggled with. Finally, the dinner was far too long. My reservation was at 8:00 PM, the first course arrived around 9:00 PM, and the experience finished around 11:30 PM. I believe guests should be informed in advance that the tasting menu can take this long. Overall: exceptional food, disappointing service. I would return for the cuisine, but I hope the service improves to match the level of the kitchen.
Kirill Maksimkin★★★★★
It’s a true gastronomic performance. Every dish is perfectly served and accompanied by a brief presentation of the ingredients, ideas which stand behind the dish, and finally all products are local. It’s exceptionally delicious. Food is an art at this restaurant for sure. The staff is friendly and welcoming and speak English.

We enjoyed a lunch in the restaurant's courtyard. Les Vignes serves French food and lets you choose from a few lunch options. Kids eat the same as adults, of course in smaller portion sizes. Portions are well sized and do not leave you stuffed. Ideal for friends of the good French cuisine!

We came here on a rainy Monday to celebrate a birthday. The food was delicious with lovely service. There was a lovely atmosphere. Most appreciated a vegetarian option too as we had a vegetarian in our group. Each plate was imaginatively prepared with great flavours. And the price was extremely good too. Thank you for a memorable lunch.

Excellent food at reasonable prices. Nondescript and unpretentious. Parfait.

Excellent food and wine and good service. The frozen goats cheese profiteroles were a bit of a surprise - hence four stars only - as we were expecting normal room-temperature choux pastry filled with goats cheese and herbs. The frozen state made them very hard to eat and perhaps suppressed the flavour. It look a long time for them to thaw when some of the flavour was recovered. Perhaps due a rethink. Lovely calm atmosphere with air-con in the interior. Clean and well-appointed 'petit coin'.

All the dishes were delicious, but the lamb was especially outstanding. We really enjoyed every course, from the starters to the main course and dessert. The place also has a stylish and pleasant atmosphere. The waiters were very attentive. This is the 9th day of our trip in the south of France, and this was the best meal we’ve had so far. We were extremely satisfied with the food.

The restaurant provided me with a delightful culinary experience, with both the appetizers and main courses offering a fusion of visual appeal and exquisite taste. The ambiance was elegant, complemented by soft music. Both the head chef and the waitress were exceptionally friendly, patiently introducing each dish and ensuring my satisfaction throughout the meal. They even inquired about my overall experience after I finished dining. I felt truly pampered and thoroughly enjoyed my time with my friends there.

Don't be fooled by the good reviews (not sure how they managed to get them). The food is really bad and overpriced. The best thing we had was the canned sardines… We ordered codfish that was completely tasteless. I’m sure they just put frozen fish in the oven and served it. Don't waste your time. They were also extremely slow.
Tracie T★★★★★
I had a fantastic lunch and a warm welcome from both the waitress and the chef. The lamb chops were done to perfection and the salad was delicious. Attention was given to plating the food too. Overall, a delicious and visually appealing meal in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

I can’t tell you how good this place. I walked by yesterday and could only eat outside it was so busy. It was so hot that I went somewhere else and immediately booked for tonight. Food was excellent. Probably the best steak I’ve ever had (French one). Service was brilliant and such friendly staff. Couldn’t decide on wine so was asked if I’d like a taster of their house wines. Great advice from the servers on how I wanted the steak cooked (medium was fantastic for me) and which sauce I wanted. Brilliant!

Foods were great especially ceviche and steaks , and the wines was good . I loved how enthusiastic and warm the staffs were . The only thing is aircon. Even if there were so many aircons it was way too hot like sauna so we were sweating like crazy. Other than that everything was perfect.

Delicious steak and bone marrow. Excellent wine and helpful recommendations from the service team. Great quality - food, drinks, service - at a reasonable price.

What a fantastic evening we had! And the service was absolutely incredible. We were looked after by a young man who clearly loved his job, and that really showed. We had 1.1 kg of Côte de Bœuf, served with fresh chimichurri, fries, and a fantastic salad, which the waiter very kindly recommended to us. Everything was delicious, and the combination was perfect. We also enjoyed a delicious Bellini and shared a good bottle of red wine. And all of this for a very good price. All in all, we had an amazing evening. Delicious food, fantastic service, and a great atmosphere. Definitely an experience we won’t forget anytime soon!

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here - wonderful food, friendly and professional staff and fine wine. Completely worth it. The best meal I had while in Montpellier. I will be back the next time I am there.

Really nice café close to the botanical garden. The food was absolutely amazing, i personally recommend their avocado poké bowl. They also had a big variety of drinks and they were all fantastic, especially their porter. Finding the menu, ordering and paying was easy; you just had to scan a QR code. The prices are much cheaper than what you’d find in the center and the food is much better. I’d definitely recommend stopping by here! 🌟🌟🌟

Arrived at our apartment just before lunch so this was the nearest cafe. Quite close to the university & as such there was a strong student vibe. I’d try & get a table in the shade next time 🥵. Wanted a light lunch so ordered some nachos & calamari. Both were delicious as was the Chardonnay. Highly recommended.

Great food! I had de butchers piece and it was very tasty. The service wad great, even though they were slightly understaffed, so we had to wait a little while. But overall it was a great experience

Stopped for lunch and we both enjoyed the “plat du jour” of Blanquette de veau followed by a cafe gourmand. Great friendly service despite my poor attempt at ordering in French. Busy lunch service but food arrived quickly and was tasty. Will return to try other menu items that caught our eye.

I served my coffee outside and it was quite a lovely place, but pretty noisy and a bit crammed for my taste. I've seen that inside is way bigger so maybe I will go inside the next time I visit it.

What a pleasant way to end our Montpellier trip! ❤️We went as a group of 5 for dinner. We all chose the set meal for 46€ per person and we received: An Amuse Bouche, Unlimited Bread and Water, Appetizer, Main Meal, Dessert and Cookies/Chocolates. The staff are extremely well trained and the service is efficient. The restaurant have a very pleasing ambience with a touch of luxury and very easy to talk to. I’m very glad that it was recommended to us by our guide from Montpellier Wine Tour. Make sure to book a table before arriving. 😊🫶🏼

Gorgeous courtyard. They have a lovely inside area as well, but I chose the garden as that was the main draw for me. The food was delicious, interesting and beautifully presented. A really reasonable price for fantastic service and delicious food. Wonderful for a fancy lunch for myself!

That’s a very mixing feeling. I liked the food and ambience of the place. Definitely it’s worth to recommend it. However it’s the first time when I felt like the restaurant staff wanted us to leave asap. We were served very quickly in less than an hour. I would not complain about it in France but when we were ordering coffee other tables had not yet started eating at all. So it was very confusing. But as I said overall it’s a nice experience with tasty food and exceptional white wine.

Booked via the MICHELIN Guide for 19:30 and left having eaten nothing. Seated in a completely empty garden, then told we had taken the wrong one of three empty tables. We ordered, took the sommelière's advice on the wine, the amuse-bouche came, and then we waited over an hour while the garden and dining room filled and every other table was served its starter. Ours never arrived. When we asked whether there was a problem with our order, the waiter walked away and did not return, so we asked to settle the wine and go. We were then told the delay was because we had ordered a second bottle — a Condrieu, brought by the sommelière, nothing to do with the kitchen. When I said that wasn't right, the argument followed us across the dining room. I paid the €208 bill, the argument continued, and when I said she was being rude the member of staff walked off telling me to "f*** off" — in front of the whole team and the owner-chef, who had been asking his staff from the pass what was going on and did not step in while it happened. The manager's response was that she "was probably upset". No apology at any stage. The sommelière was genuinely excellent — the one bright spot. Everything else was a failure of basic hospitality.

Incredible food, great atmosphere, terrible service and staff (specifically the tall, red haired lady). Table not cleaned properly, dishes not picked up once completed, order missed. When asked for the missed order, instead of trying to get it expedited and resolved, getting a lecture on how we didn’t order the missed food to start with… To the operator/owner; such great food and atmosphere shouldn’t be wasted with such terrible service. Reading all the other comments, seems like I am not alone.

I visited here with some friends in March of 2025. It's still holds as one of the best meals I've ever had in my life. The soup had more flavor and one spoonful than I've had in 10 restaurants combined. The braised beef paired with sweet potato puree is something that I would ask for it for a last meal. A lot of my reviews are positive because I tend to only want to review places I've enjoyed. But when I say this is a meal I will remember for the rest of my life. I am not joking. I have not been back to Montpelier yet when I do this will be the first place I am going. Aside from the food, the atmosphere is very cozy and I can't recommend this place enough to anyone who is in the area.

For the food I will give 5 star. The one minus was for the miscommunication of the booking. I made reservations through Instagram MP and they had confirmed my reservation. We are family of 13. The waiting time for the service was quite long because there was only one waitress that day. But she tried her best anyway and she was very nice.

Really rather ordinary flavours served rather quickly, We tried the menu découverte with wine pairing. The first course was good, but the fish, meat and dessert seemed under seasoned with bland flavours. Nothing was bad, but it wasn't of the quality I would expect for the price. The cheese platter was good, but made no sense when paired with a glass of champagne. A port, or red wine would have been much more appropriate.

The best restaurant for classic French food. The duck breast and grilled octopus was amazing. Service was very good and made us feel welcomed as a tourist

A stunning setting that the food simply does not live up to. La Réserve Rimbaud is beautifully positioned on the banks of the Lez, but unfortunately the meal was one of the weakest Michelin-starred experiences I’ve had. We chose the four-course menu. The amuse-bouche was pleasant, but the starter was genuinely poor. It looked sophisticated, yet the flavours simply did not work, to the point that I left most of it unfinished. The first main improved slightly, but was still remarkably average for a restaurant at this level. The second main then arrived cold and had to be sent back, seemingly after being left waiting before service. Dessert was decent, but again, nothing memorable. The service compounded the problem. Staff often appeared disengaged, we repeatedly had to chase for attention, dishes were not always explained, water service was inconsistent, and nobody meaningfully checked how we were finding the meal, even after a course had been returned. For a Michelin-starred restaurant, the gap between expectation and reality was enormous. Attractive plating and a beautiful location are not enough when the cooking is inconsistent and the hospitality feels indifferent. Based on this visit, I find the Michelin star extremely difficult to justify and believe the restaurant warrants reassessment. Exceptional setting, deeply disappointing food and service.

There is nothing I’d change about our experience here; it was absolutely perfect. The view from the table was picturesque and so serene. We had the 4 course tasting menu (and added the cheese course) at lunch time. Service was great, attentive but not rushed. Starting off with the best olive oil ive ever tasted in my life, then a series of amuses. Then 5 delicious and interesting courses of seasonal items and incredible sauces. Such a pleasure. I’d recommend anyone go here.

Everything was more than excellent! I loved the vibe, it was very clean and calming. The staff were very professional, polite, explained everything about the food in great detail. And the food itself was extremely delicious. I took the 4 course set menu, which was kept a secret of what the dishes are. But, I was very pleased with everything, all dishes were delicious and I highly recommend the visit to the restaurant. Top place to enjoy a tasty and fancy dinner!

We were very excited to visit this restaurant during our stay in Montpellier. We booked a table for lunch. Good deal, €49 for three courses. We were welcomed by a staff member at the front desk and taken to the table outside with beautiful views. Unfortunately as none of us speak French, communication seemed lacking including communication between waiters as we have 4 different waiters serving us. No explanation of any dishes, not a single time some came to check . I was hoping it's because of the lack of knowledge of the English language but based on previous reviews, it is a common occurrence. Food was good, however nothing memorable. We placed an order for all three courses at the beginning yet my partner got a cold cheese as a dessert straight from the fridge. After lack of any attention from the staff during the meal, once we finished we couldn't see any to ask for a bill. When trying to pay you had to go to the main desk. There are some basic that customers require from a Michelin star restaurant and this one seems to not have it. There was a maintenance person walking around the restaurant measuring things , storage room door wide open in the bathrooms. Nobody needs to see the mess of the back rooms. We previously visited one star restaurant in Beziers and it feels like a night and day experience.
Greg Ryan★★★★★
Lovely restaurant, food was excellent. Front of house staff need more training in how to be welcoming, failing to smile, ever, is not a quality. Chef knows his business. Food is very worthy of their star. On the edge of getting a second one perhaps?

Sat outside, which was nice at 9pm after 32degrees all day! The signature cocktail had a basil oil in it that was like nothing i have ever tried before. The waitress was really lovely and she suggested an alteration to my starter that was to die for. The main is some of the best pasta I've had outside of Italy. If I was here for longer I would 1000% come back, and I will recommend to anyone that comes here. Far enough from the tourist area to feel relaxed and enjoyable, but close enough that you don't have to walk too far.

Nice service, very good recommendation for what to eat from the chef. Amazing mushroom and truffle pasta, awesome tiramisu. We were so happy. Only thing we wondered was we were seated in the very back with no other people, while the front of the restaurant was really busy and full off life!

Tips for Choosing a Restaurant in Montpellier

Navigating the dining scene in Montpellier is a pleasure, but a few local insights can make your experience significantly better. The city operates on a relaxed Mediterranean rhythm, and knowing when and how to book can be the difference between a memorable meal and a frustrating evening. These practical tips will help you eat like a local and avoid the most common mistakes visitors make.

First, always reserve ahead for dinner, especially from Thursday through Saturday. Montpellier’s best tables are small, and the local dining culture leans toward long, unhurried meals. A restaurant that is empty at 7:30 p.m. may be completely full by 8:30 p.m., as most locals do not sit down until after eight. A quick phone call or an online booking earlier in the day will save you from wandering hungry through the Écusson.

Second, pay attention to the lunch menus, known as formules. Many of the city’s top restaurants offer a two- or three-course lunch at a fraction of the dinner price. This is the smartest way to experience high-end cooking without stretching your budget. Lunch service is also more relaxed about reservations, though it is still wise to book for popular spots near the Place de la Comédie.

Third, do not overlook the city’s covered market culture. The Halles Castellane and the smaller Marché des Arceaux are fantastic places to assemble a casual meal of local charcuterie, cheese, oysters, and wine. If you are staying in an apartment or simply want a lighter lunch, shopping the market stalls gives you a direct connection to the producers of the Languedoc region.

Fourth, embrace the local wines and do not be afraid to ask for guidance. Montpellier sits at the crossroads of several dynamic wine appellations, including Picpoul de Pinet, Terrasses du Larzac, and Grés de Montpellier. Most restaurants take pride in their regional wine lists, and servers are generally happy to recommend a glass that matches your dish. This is one of the few cities in France where the house wine is often genuinely excellent.

Finally, remember that service in Montpellier is warm but unhurried. This is not a city for rushed, transactional dining. Meals are social events, and the kitchen will not be offended if you linger over a coffee or a digestif. Relax into the pace, enjoy the people-watching, and let the meal unfold naturally. That slower rhythm is part of what makes dining here so satisfying.

Montpellier’s restaurant scene is a reflection of the city itself: youthful, sunlit, and deeply connected to the land and sea around it. Whether you spend your days exploring the medieval streets or lounging on a nearby beach, the food you eat here will likely become one of the highlights of your trip. The best meals are often the ones you stumble upon, but with this list and a few local habits in mind, you will be well prepared to eat very well indeed.

Take your time, follow your appetite, and do not be surprised if you find yourself planning a return visit before the last course arrives. In Montpellier, the table is never just about food—it is about the pleasure of being present in one of France’s most underrated culinary capitals.
