Finding the right supermarket in Annecy can shape your daily routine, your budget, and even the quality of your meals. Whether you live in the historic Vieille Ville, near the lake, or in the surrounding communes, the grocery options vary widely in price, product range, and atmosphere. Knowing where to shop for a quick weekday dinner versus a leisurely weekend market haul can save you both time and money.
Annecy is often called the “Venice of the Alps,” and its retail landscape reflects a blend of traditional Savoyard character and modern French convenience. You will find everything from massive hypermarkets on the outskirts to compact urban grocery stores tucked into centuries-old buildings. Each store caters to a different need, whether you are hunting for local Reblochon cheese, organic produce, or imported specialty goods.
The French grocery market is dominated by several major chains, but the local execution in Annecy matters more than the brand name. Some locations excel at fresh bakery sections, while others are better for bulk shopping or late-night necessities. Understanding the subtle differences between a Carrefour, a Super U, and a regional favorite like Leclerc can help you shop smarter.
For residents and long-term visitors, parking accessibility is a crucial factor that often gets overlooked. Many of the best supermarkets in central Annecy have limited or expensive parking, while the larger stores on the periphery offer free lots but require a drive. Balancing convenience against selection is the key to finding your go-to store.
This guide covers a mix of hypermarkets, supermarkets, and specialty grocers that consistently receive high marks for quality, value, and service. We have evaluated them based on product freshness, price competitiveness, organic selection, and overall shopping experience. Whether you are stocking a holiday apartment or doing the weekly family shop, this list will point you in the right direction.

Extremely disappointing experience at the Carrefour Express self checkout in Annecy. I have used self checkout systems for years without issue, but when the barcode scanner failed mid transaction, the staff member assisting me was rude, dismissive, and unhelpful from start to finish.
Rather than acknowledging a system glitch, she immediately blamed me, claiming I had skipped scanning an item. My brother and I had already double checked the quantities and total before reaching the counter, so we knew this was not the case. When she rescanned everything, the total matched exactly what I had scanned originally, proving the system was at fault, not me. She never acknowledged this or apologized.
I speak limited French and apologized simply to be polite during the confusion. She responded with a French curse word under her breath, apparently assuming I would not understand. After finishing the rescan, she handed the scanner back without offering any further help to complete the checkout, leaving me to hope the system would not crash again.
This kind of treatment is unacceptable, especially toward a customer who was calm and cooperative throughout. I have shopped at Carrefour for many years and this was by far the worst experience I have had. Carrefour needs to seriously address staff training on both technical issues and basic customer courtesy.

Had a good experience here. The only negative was we bought popcorn and didn't properly check it out because when we got home. We saw the bottom was open, a piece of the container was missing and the popcorn was contaminated. So we had to throw it out. So just check your containers properly before purchasing. I did ask someone for assistance to find something and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

Carrefour Annecy is a large store with a wide range of goods. However, the goods are chaotically placed in the individual aisles and the arrangement makes no sense at all (for example, some spices are in aisle 5 and other spices are in aisle 12). If you want to find something quickly and leave the store, then without a map of where the goods are located, you have no chance.

I visit this supermarket often and the staff are always friendly and helpful, including security. Recently, many sections have been rearranged, and some items are now hard to find or placed in inconvenient spots, for example, the worldmarket products moved far from where they used to be. Shopping carts aren’t always available at the entrance when it’s busy, which can be frustrating if you’re in a hurry, though staff are usually helpful in restocking smaller trolleys.
One concern is the area near the bike parking: sometimes people there offer to “watch” your bike for money, and they talk back and can make you feel uncomfortable if you decline. I’ve had this experience a few times, especially late in the evening, and it makes leaving your bike for a longer period feel worrying. Overall, the store has a wide selection and good service, but security at the entry/near parking could be improved.

The store looked well stocked and organised. I liked the variety of products and staff were friendly and helpful as I don't speak French.

Very disappointing experience overall. The supermarket had a poor selection, and many of the shelves were empty, which made shopping frustrating and inconvenient. It felt like there was very little choice, even for fairly basic items, and the whole store seemed understocked. For a supermarket, you expect to be able to find what you need without too much trouble, but that definitely was not the case here.
What made the experience even worse was having to pay for parking. Charging customers to park when the shopping experience is already so poor feels outrageous and leaves a really bad impression. Overall, this was not a place I would rush back to, and there is a lot of room for improvement both in stock levels and customer experience.

Dear Intermarché Team,
I would like to share how much I enjoy shopping at your store. Every time I visit, the shop is clean, well-organized, and easy to shop in. There is a great variety of fresh products, and everything is presented very well.
I would also like to compliment the cashier, who was very friendly, polite, and professional. The excellent service made my shopping experience even more enjoyable.
Thank you for your hard work and for making Intermarché such a pleasant place to shop.

Not sure how this place gets good reviews as a grocery store. No milk or dairy. Very strangely organized. Very little produce, most of which is not very fresh. Tons of candy and junk food with labels in Arabic. They only had eggs in huge crates. I could not even find real orange juice. Only orange flavored drinks. This should be listed as a specialty store.

I can attest too to the hostile treatment my partner and I received as foreign tourists to this store in June only a month after foreign tourist reviewer in May had much trouble. The guard, shaved head, black clothing looked more like a thief himself than any security agent that should be representing the market. He waited to make big scene as my partner and me were in checkout line with other shoppers so as to make big show to other people instead of discreetly asking about her small sandwich bag of loose cookies she just bought at pastry shop down the street. Probably the same guy as caused the trouble in May to foreigner. Reminds me of The Rolling Stones back in the day hiring the Hells Angels for security at one of their concerts in the 60s.

One of the Supermarkets open on a Sunday afternoon in Annecy. Typical city type supermarket, but a decent range of products. Important note: we couldn't buy alcohol there on the Sunday we went (apparently because there were too few staff on the self checkouts to securely check id etc). Not sure if this is true for every Sunday.....

This supermarket has a really good range of local products from this region however it is extremely expensive and the staff are unfortunately very slow at the check outs. I would not come here for my regular shopping, only if I'm feeling particularly fancy.
Also, for my fellow Brits there is an isle with marmite, baked beans, and other British food staples ❤️

I think the reviews about inappropriate security interactions or poor checkout experience must be out dated. I've been here twice and have not had an issue. Staff isn't bubbly or anything but as an English speaker I find that good, every interaction I've had with staff has been absolutely fine. Layout is a bit odd to me coming from the US but it's a small historical city with limited space so I don't think it's a big deal. I can't comment about staff hitting on you as I am a white male so I'm unlikely to be hit on in the first place. Would return.
On the disorderly side, they are currently undergoing renovations so keep that in mind, I don't really hold that against them though and it seems to only really affect the ground level.
Mary Dailey★★★☆☆
Monoprix is a national chain - it is a combo medium to low-end department store & grocery store. This particular branch is odd. The inventory is strangely arranged - for example you enter on the ground floor through a small area with some women's and children's wear - but am odd assortment & then take an escalator to the grocery. The grocery is fine what you would expect but some items are overpriced in comparison to other stores. The check out area is a nightmare, all self check - too compressed of a space, they don't have a way to weigh produce at the cash register that needs to be done in advance and to get out you need to scan a bar code from the receipt.
Nidhi Madhu★☆☆☆☆
PATHETIC CUSTOMER SERVICE. I have worked for one of the best brands in the world and this is not what I expected from a big brand in France. You should probably invest in training your employees.
The last thing you expect from supermarket staff is to be asked for your number while you’re just standing in the aisle confused and to be made to feel unsafe.
This happened a few months ago and I live in Annecy. But today a friend of mine complained about how one of the staffs mistreated her and wasted her 20 minutes. And now after reading the other reviews, it totally makes sense.

Terrible shop. Run down , bad smell and very unpleasant staff. The check out at the food section is very confusing! Long line, can’t tap the credit card via phone, needed to go to the cash section but had to wait till the person next to me was done inserting her cash. Shocking system! Bring back people at the cashier instead of these ridiculous machines which create long lines. Tourists are mistreated by staff as well- I felt terribly sorry for a group of Japanese tourists

Practical Tips for Grocery Shopping in Annecy
Shopping in Annecy comes with a few local quirks that can make your experience much smoother once you understand them. The city’s layout, with its medieval core and modern outskirts, means that your best shopping strategy depends on where you are staying and how you get around. These tips will help you shop like a local and avoid common frustrations.
First, always bring your own bags or be prepared to pay for them, as single-use plastic bags have been phased out across France. Many shoppers also bring a small coin or token for the shopping cart deposit, especially at the larger hypermarkets. Second, if you are staying in the old town, do not expect a full-size supermarket within the pedestrian zone. Instead, rely on the smaller city-format stores for daily essentials and save the big weekly shop for a trip to the outskirts. Third, check the opening hours carefully, as many stores close for a long lunch break on Sundays or do not open at all. The larger hypermarkets on the edge of town tend to have the most generous Sunday morning hours. Fourth, look for the “Produit en France” and “Fait en Savoie” labels if you want to prioritize local sourcing. Annecy is surrounded by farms producing excellent dairy, charcuterie, and wine, and the better supermarkets dedicate shelf space to these regional items. Finally, download the store loyalty apps before you shop. Most major chains in Annecy offer digital coupons and personalized discounts that can cut your bill noticeably, especially on fresh produce and household goods.
The supermarket scene in Annecy continues to evolve, with more stores expanding their organic and locally sourced sections each year. Shoppers are increasingly looking for transparency about where their food comes from, and the best stores in the region have responded by highlighting partnerships with nearby producers. This trend is good news for anyone who wants to eat well without visiting a separate farmers market every week.
In the end, the best supermarket for you depends on your priorities. If you value convenience and a central location, the city-format stores will serve you well. If you want the lowest prices and the widest selection, a short drive to a hypermarket is worth the effort. Use this guide as a starting point, and you will quickly find the spots that fit your lifestyle in this beautiful Alpine city.
