12 Best Supermarkets in Tours

Grocery shopping in Tours is about far more than simply picking up a baguette and a bottle of local Vouvray. It is a window into the rhythm of daily life in the Loire Valley, where tradition meets modern convenience. Whether you are settling into a long-term rental or just passing through on a cycling holiday, knowing where to buy your essentials can define your experience.

The supermarket landscape here is diverse, ranging from sprawling hypermarkets on the city’s periphery to compact urban stores tucked into historic streets. Each chain offers a distinct personality, catering to different budgets, dietary preferences, and culinary ambitions. Understanding these nuances will save you time and ensure you eat well during your stay.

For the food-focused traveler, the markets of Tours—like the famous Halles de Tours—are unmissable. However, for stocking a pantry, buying household goods, or grabbing a quick lunch on a busy day, the modern French supermarket is indispensable. It is where you will find the best value for cheese, charcuterie, and wine without sacrificing quality.

This guide cuts through the noise to highlight the retail spaces that truly serve the local community and visitors well. We have evaluated these locations based on product freshness, price-to-quality ratio, accessibility, and the overall shopping experience. From organic cooperatives to budget-friendly giants, there is a perfect fit for every shopper.

We understand that navigating a foreign grocery store can be intimidating, especially when dealing with self-checkout machines or unfamiliar brands. That is why we have focused on stores that offer clear layouts, helpful staff, and a wide selection of recognizable products alongside French specialties.

Below is a curated list of the best options currently available in the greater Tours area. Use this as your roadmap to efficient, enjoyable, and delicious grocery shopping in the heart of France.

Always a great selection of fresh seafood, meats and produce. Check out is a pain - never enough registers open.

I had a deeply unsettling experience at this Auchan location in Tours nord. As an American tourist dressed in casual clothes (blue jeans, a shirt, and a baseball cap), I was stopped by security upon leaving simply because I did not purchase anything. It was clear I was targeted based on profiling. The security guard treated me as a potential thief, seemingly applying a prejudiced profile that equates casual attire with "delinquents" or undocumented immigrants. As a tourist just looking around, I found this harassment discriminatory. I felt unwelcome and profiled. I highly recommend tourists be cautious or avoid this store if they prefer not to be subjected to biased security screenings.
Adrian I★★★★★
Huge place for shopping and plenty of parking spaces. This is part of a bigger Retail park area where there are multiple shops around, including fuel station. Plenty of selections to choose from, including meats, cheese, sweets, fish, drinks, etc.
Todd Robertson★★★★☆

An excellent E.Leclerc in the North East of the city. Just on the outskirts of a residential area with new developments coming across the road. A well stocked store with a café and multimedia store inside. Lots of home wares, great Boulangerie and superb fresh produce.
ULTRA 4x4★★★★☆
Good all round supermarket but prices seem abit higher than others. Product range good

On August 18, 2025, at 4:00 PM, the customer service team at Electronics Workers in E.Leclerc Tours Nord did not handle or treat customers in a professional manner. I am very disappointed and regret purchasing expensive products from them. This has been a valuable lesson. Thank you.
Carol Ible★★★★★
Found wonderful seeded loaves of bread baked in store at a great price. Lots of choice of different products and same price if not cheaper than Lidl.

Lots of space to park but not a very well signed entrance to the car park. Entrance to the shop was untidy on the outside, looked run down. Inside wasn't very clean and quite disorganized. A few items were reasonably good value but a lot seemed quite expensive. The company needs to look after its store as these problems go beyond what the staff can resolve.
Joop Jansen★★★★☆
It's a typical supermarket in France. One thing stands out, though: very friendly staff.

The store is dirty, produce is mostly spoiled, they don’t restock it regularly. Floors are filthy and lighting is bad. They don’t do the business that they should because it’s not clean and you don’t feel welcome there. They have Security that follows you up and down aisles and stares you down. Maybe they have a lot of people that steal, but I seriously doubt the majority of people are there to steal. Rather than be helpful and friendly they just stare at you and make you feel unwelcome. The employees look miserable. It’s very close to where I live, but I mostly avoid going in unless it’s absolutely necessary and then I usually regret it. It’s unfortunate because they could really have a booming business.
Sasha★★★★★
The store is very well stocked with a wide range of products, I appreciate that although it is large, it is well maintained, clean, I have not seen any gaps in the shelves. The prices are relatively ok compared to other similar store chains. The location is good, in the city center. What I didn't like is the gallery where the store is located, with many closed stores, it seems a bit abandoned.
Susan McCarthy★☆☆☆☆
This is the dirtiest grocery store in the area plus the shelves weren’t straight or organized. There was hardly any produce. I felt dirty by the time I left!

We enjoyed shopping here as a tourist. It is next to a university so that is their main clientele. They have lots of jams to select from with your French baguette 🥖. Yum! Checkout was fast and efficient. Prices are very competitive!
Ruthie Levy★★★☆☆
Big grocery store with lots of options, but the produce (fruits and vegetables) is really sad looking. Went here twice while visiting Tours and both times struggled to find produce that wasn't already going bad.
Thomas Roux★★☆☆☆
Common medium sized supermarket. Nothing really attractive or interesting. They sell mainly food, and a bit of every day life stuff. The parking at the back of the building looks like a diry wasteland. They have a small gas station.
Mohamed Mahdi★☆☆☆☆
Be warned, unlike shopping in UK supermarkets, French supermarkets are more expensive, limited variety, and moderate quality.

Went there for two items, found quickly. Checked out, and the security guard who had been at the entrance was now there at the automatic check-out, calling out to me as I walked off, that I must replace my basket. Usually it's not clear where to leave baskets, hence why I left it there. In this case, I had to walk back into the main part of the shop, and set off a buzzer, to replace the basket, where a second security guard was now installed. Not only were the security guards not busy, but next to the first man was another one just sitting on a chair playing with his phone.

Wide selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and diary products. Products here are a bit pricey, but quality especial of fruits are highest among other supermarkets. I really liked.
Jane Laws★★★★★
Loved it on first sight and great selection of products/produce However after our first visit a few weeks ago we read in the press that strawberries purchased there should not be eaten due to high levels of pesticides present. This has totally put us off going there again. Also we bought a cauliflower which stayed remarkably "fresh" for a very long time, perhaps due to high levels of preservatives, who knows but we threw it away It's a shame but feel the "frais" is false

I was surprised seeing my African stuff in the shop. Now if you come from England, you will know that's an uncommon sight in a shop like this

Practical Tips for Shopping in Tours

To make the most of your grocery run in Tours, a little local knowledge goes a long way. French supermarket culture has its own set of unwritten rules and logistical quirks that differ from North America or the UK. By preparing yourself for these small differences, you can avoid checkout anxiety and focus on the joy of discovering incredible regional products.

  1. Bring Your Own Bags and a Coin: Plastic bags are largely a thing of the past in France. You will need to bring sturdy reusable bags or purchase them at the register. Additionally, you usually need a €1 coin to release a shopping trolley from the cart corral; the coin is returned when you lock the cart back in place.
  2. Weigh Your Produce: In the fresh produce section, you must weigh your fruits and vegetables using the digital scales provided. Simply place your item on the scale, look for the picture or name of the product on the screen, and press the button to print a price sticker. Attach this sticker to your bag before heading to the checkout.
  3. Mind the Lunch Rush: Many supermarkets in the city center experience a significant surge between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM as workers buy their déjeuner. If you are doing a large shop, avoid these hours. Conversely, if you want a fresh sandwich or salad from the traiteur counter, this is the time to go.
  4. Understand the "Drive" Concept: You will notice large metal structures in the parking lots of many hypermarkets labeled "Drive." This is a pickup service where customers order online and collect their groceries without leaving their car. Do not park in these numbered spots unless you have placed an online order.
  5. Check the Wine Aisle for Local Gems: While the big names are always available, look for the section labeled "Vins de Loire" or "Produits Régionaux." You will often find bottles from Chinon, Bourgueil, and Montlouis-sur-Loire at prices significantly lower than in tourist shops or restaurants.
  6. Don’t Skip the Fromage Counter: Even in a standard supermarket, the cheese selection is usually staffed by someone knowledgeable. Don’t be afraid to ask for a cheese that is "fait" (ripe/ready to eat today) versus one that needs a few days in the cave. They can also vacuum-pack soft cheeses for travel.

Shopping for groceries in Tours is a delightful blend of practicality and gastronomy. While the hypermarkets on the outskirts offer unbeatable variety and price, the smaller city-center stores provide the speed and convenience needed for a busy day of sightseeing. Whichever you choose, you are guaranteed access to the incredible produce and dairy that make this region a culinary capital.

Ultimately, the best supermarket is the one that fits your specific rhythm of life while you are here. Whether you are hunting for organic lentils, a cheap pack of water, or a perfectly aged Sainte-Maure de Touraine goat cheese, this city has you covered. Take your time, explore the aisles, and enjoy the everyday luxury of French food retail.
