12 Best Parks & Gardens in Tours

Tours sits at the meeting point of the Loire and Cher rivers, a city often celebrated for its Renaissance architecture and vibrant university atmosphere. While the historic center captivates with its half-timbered houses and bustling squares, the true secret to the city’s charm lies in its abundance of green spaces. The locals, known as Tourangeaux, have perfected the art of the leisurely stroll, and their parks are the beating heart of daily life.

For visitors seeking a break from museum-hopping or wine tasting, the gardens of Tours offer a serene retreat. These spaces are not just patches of grass; they are carefully curated landscapes that reflect the region’s horticultural heritage. From English-style romanticism to structured French formality, the diversity of these green areas provides a unique perspective on the city’s history and its relationship with nature.

Exploring these outdoor sanctuaries allows you to experience Tours like a local. You will find families picnicking under ancient cedar trees, students reading on manicured lawns, and retirees playing pétanque in the shade. It is an opportunity to slow down, breathe in the fresh Loire Valley air, and appreciate the quieter moments that make travel memorable.

Because Tours is a compact city, these green spaces are rarely more than a short walk or tram ride from the medieval core. This accessibility means you can easily combine a morning of sightseeing with a relaxing afternoon in the sun. Whether you are traveling with children who need room to run or you are a solo traveler seeking a quiet corner to journal, there is a green space suited to your mood.

In this guide, we will navigate the most beautiful and significant parks and gardens the city has to offer. We have prioritized spaces that offer distinct character, historical significance, or exceptional natural beauty. You will find everything from botanical collections to sweeping meadows designed for large gatherings.

Prepare to trade the cobblestones for grass underfoot. Here are the essential green escapes that define the garden city of Tours.

A peaceful, dog friendly garden with beautiful historic sequoia trees. Celebrated by the French Senegalese poet Senghor, who spent many a day here during his time in Tours, and host to weekly music and dance events in season, this park has much too recommend it. Bring your pétanque equipment!
Dave Deruytter★★★★★
Although it is a small garden, it is a very beautiful one. What a gem! Ok, it may only take you 15 to 30 minutes to walk around it. Yet, it is so well kept, with fresh flowers and great trees, that you will love it. A "point de beauté" of the city of Tours.

Very nice gardens. Lots to look at and animals as well as plants. Plenty of shady seating if you want to bring a picnic. There are toilets and drinkable water from fountains. It is free.

Lovely gardens, really well maintained and with a lot more animals than you would expect for somewhere without an entrance fee. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
M Szeto★★★★★
Lovely park and gardens with cute animals. They seem unbothered by people and dogs. I was able to take my dogs in which is kind of rare for a nice park with gardens. Free entrance and not many people in.

On a summer day, this park with the museum in the front and cathedral in the background is just amazing. The garden is well maintained and flower arrangements reminding some of the Loire chateaus beautiful gardens. Inside the garden, you can also find a kiosk where you can buy something to eat and drink, a playground for kids to play and shadow from the trees to keep you cool in a hit summer day.

This is a small but nice garden within the grounds of Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours. The garden is very nicely manicured and makes for a lovely short walk to enjoy its grounds. There is a kiosk and a few chairs under the foliage of mature trees if you fancy a beverage or rest within the garden grounds.

A park for runners and joggers with longer routes, featuring a comfortable, compacted running path that is marked at intervals showing how many kilometres you’ve covered.
Jack Beton★★★★☆
Very good place to walk around and to sit when it is sunny with different views of the river and well-maintained paths along the river banks as well as the park itself. It is a bit of a pull, though, to walk from the town centre, but a rewarding glass of beer could be adequate compensation.

On peut s’y promener tranquillement, profiter des espaces ombragés et s’installer pour un pique-nique. Il y a aussi une aire de jeux pour les enfants avec toboggan, balançoires… parfaite pour qu’ils s’amusent en toute sécurité. This is a small public garden to the east of Musée des Beaux-Arts that was built for residents in the early 19th-century in the manner of city parks springing up in other French cities at the time. Within, I enjoyed the short paved walking path, park benches, mature trees, shrubs, old fountain pools as well as a stone statue of 15th-century French sculptor Michel Colombe. Potentially worth a quick walk through if in the area and interested.

I still don’t understand why communes close parks so early? To walk your dog, play with kids or jog and breathe with all this beautiful green around you is impossible after office hours or before leaving to your job in the early morning! We are 2025, please wake up French politicians and provide security/safety in your parks so your habitants can unwind on a beautiful evening in May before the sun sets around 20:30! It’s a shame the park is already closed.
Mary Lenehan★★★★☆

A small, wooded park in a secluded location. The bandstand is charming. There are toilets, which I strongly advise against using except in cases of extreme emergency.

Mat Rrero★★☆☆☆
Completely abandoned. Historic heritage falling into ruin. Fountain out of service. Green spaces neglected. It's a shame, given the significant investment in the restoration of the former Consular Hotel across the street, which will be magnificent once renovated, but across the way there will be this abandoned historic park. Public money poorly invested, as is unfortunately all too often the case.
Martin L.★★★★☆
A lovely little square just steps from Rue Nationale in Tours. The Lovers' Fountain stands proudly in the middle of Place du Jardin Beaune-Semblançay, beneath the windows of Tours' largest Renaissance mansion (1518), of which only the majestic façade remains following the bombings of the last war.
Daniel Bregère★★★★★
It's true that an investment would be necessary. Why not put together a proposal to submit to the European fund?
Luisa Davila Rama★★★★★
A small, almost hidden romantic garden. Located in front of the Chamber of Commerce and to the side of the Church of Saint Julien. It features a 16th-century fountain by the artist Cécile Pitois and the remains of a 15th-century house facade.

Essential Tips for Visiting Tours’ Parks & Gardens

To make the most of your time in the green spaces of Tours, it helps to understand the local etiquette and logistics. While these parks are generally welcoming and open, a little preparation ensures you can enjoy them exactly as the locals do, maximizing your comfort and the quality of your visit.

Plan around the seasons. The Loire Valley experiences distinct seasons, and the parks change dramatically throughout the year. Spring brings vibrant tulips and cherry blossoms, while autumn transforms the trees into a canvas of gold and rust. Many parks, particularly the botanical gardens, have peak blooming periods, so check local tourism resources if you are visiting for specific flora.

Respect the lawns. In France, there is often a distinction between lawns that are decorative (pelouses interdites) and those where you are allowed to sit or picnic (pelouses autorisées). Look for signage indicating whether you can step on the grass. If you see a sign that says "pelouse au repos," it means the grass is resting and needs time to recover.

Bring a picnic. One of the greatest pleasures in Tours is buying fresh bread, cheese, and fruit from the local markets, such as Les Halles, and taking them to a park. While many gardens have benches, having a blanket allows you to sit on the designated grass areas and enjoy a leisurely lunch surrounded by nature.

Check for facilities. While some larger parks have public restrooms and cafés, smaller gardens might not. It is wise to use facilities at a nearby café or museum before heading into a quieter green space, especially if you are traveling with children. Water fountains are available in some, but carrying a bottle of water is always recommended during the warm summer months.

Observe the opening hours. Unlike some cities where parks are open 24/7, many of the enclosed gardens in Tours close at dusk. Gates are locked in the evening to protect the plant life. Check the posted hours at the entrance to avoid getting locked in, particularly during the shorter days of winter when closing times come early in the afternoon.

The beauty of Tours is that its nature is interwoven with its urban fabric. After spending time in these parks, you will likely find that your favorite memories of the city are not just the grand cathedrals or châteaux, but the simple moments spent resting under a canopy of leaves.

As you leave the green spaces behind and return to the vibrant streets, you carry with you a sense of the tranquility that defines the Loire Valley lifestyle. It is this balance between cultural richness and natural beauty that makes Tours a truly unforgettable destination.
