Tours may not carry the same global pastry fame as Paris, but for those who live in the heart of the Loire Valley, the city is a quiet powerhouse of artisanal baking. Here, the humble baguette is treated with reverence, and the local specialty—a dense, dark rye bread known as pain tourné—sits proudly beside delicate viennoiserie. The bakeries here are not just shops; they are neighborhood anchors where morning rituals are formed and flour dust hangs in the air.
The standard for baking in France is notoriously high, but in Tours, the competition is fierce. Local bakers understand that their clientele expects excellence, whether they are buying a simple croissant for breakfast or a complex patisserie for a Sunday lunch. This demand for quality has fostered a culture where traditional methods meet modern creativity, resulting in a diverse landscape of storefronts that range from historic institutions to trendy new wave bakers.
Exploring the city’s baking scene requires a certain strategy. You cannot simply wander into the first shop you see and expect the best the city has to offer. Some excel at sourdough, others at laminated dough, and a few have perfected the art of the savory tart. To truly appreciate the depth of the craft in Tours, you need to know where the locals line up on a Saturday morning and where the chefs source their bread for high-end restaurants.
This guide is designed to cut through the guesswork. We have walked the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, navigated the bustling markets, and ventured into the residential quarters to identify the bakers who are truly pushing the envelope. The criteria were strict: we looked for flavor, texture, the quality of raw ingredients, and the consistency of the bake. We prioritized artisans who respect fermentation times and use high-quality butter, flour, and seasonal produce.
Whether you are visiting the Château de Villandry or simply passing through the Centre-Val de Loire region, your culinary journey should include a stop at a genuine local bakery. You deserve better than a mass-produced baguette from a chain supermarket. You deserve the crackle of a properly baked crust and the airy, honeycombed interior of a well-executed sourdough.
Below is our curated selection of the fifteen best bakeries in Tours. These are the places that define the city’s baking identity, offering everything from the classic baguette tradition to innovative desserts that blur the line between bakery and fine dining.

We spent 3 weeks travelling around France eating at a different Boullangerie each day. This was by far the best. Exceptional taste & value. Their carré aux amandes was the best pastry I've ever eaten. Their Flan deliciously decadent, the baguette crusty & fluffy. Sandwiches were excellent. My partner said the pain aux raisins was the best he's ever had. There will be something here for everyone. Highly recommend it.
Nali Verse (insta)★★★★★
To me the price quality ratio is perfect because they also offer bio, which is not common. There is no place to eat inside, so it's only for take away, which makes the menu option less attractive. The bread is very good and they have some good unique dishes and deserts available. To me it's one of the best bakery's in Tours so far. Downside is that they do not have any vegan or vegetarian sandwiches.

A short walk from various attractions in Tours, this bakery has excellent products and friendly staff. We tried various products including their choix buns, quiche, baguettes, and croissants. All were excellent and reasonably priced! They also had a delicious looking dessert display as well as sandwich offerings. Would highly recommend a quick detour to this establishment!

lunchtime hit, but i couldn’t resist the almond pain au chocolat. it just looked too good to pass up.
we have free will, and it’s definitely not a crime to eat sweets for both breakfast and lunch.
no regrets here. proud of my choice. it was a very good pastry: flaky, buttery, and absolutely delicious.

Lovely chicken sandwich which was dairy free. They were very helpful with a dairy allergy and spoke a bit of English too. Very fresh and perfect for a tasty lunch!

Not all croissants are made equal in France - and the ones we had in RC were NEXT level. Literally came back across town to buy more. The lady behind the counter was incredibly nice (at 7:30 in the morning!) and also spoke excellent English, which made things a lot easier. Apple Pay is accepted. Outstanding find - don't even need to bother with the touristy bakeries. Locals go here because they know what's up (and now we do too).

Passing through Tours, I wanted to try this pastry shop I'd seen on the French TV show "La Meilleure Boulangerie de France" (The Best Bakery in France).
Right from the entrance, I spotted some gorgeous lemon tarts.
The combination with basil was a real treat. The meringue cream and the tart base were all delicious. The staff were very friendly, which was a nice bonus. I'll be back and I highly recommend it.
Konrad Schmidt★★★★★
And once again I was in beautiful Tours with its lovely old town. Of course, I also visited the Les 3 Grains bakery again. The quality improves every time; I'm overwhelmed by the delicious selection and the friendly service. I was even more delighted when I heard that a café, Les 3 Grains Le Cafe, was opening nearby.
Every morning I found a very tasty selection of food and coffee there. They also have delicious cookies to take away and homemade ice cream. And for gifts for loved ones back home, they have delicious jams.
Top-notch, simply delicious. Keep it up!

While visiting family in Tours, we learned of this wonderful patisserie. We stopped in here most days for a pastry, coffee and / or breakfast sandwich. I definitely will come here again when we return to Tours to visit.

I love this bakery. 10/10
The pastries are absolutely delicious! Every bite makes you want seconds. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. Whether I'm in the mood for something savory or sweet, they've got me covered, and it's always a delight 🙏🏽

Be careful not to go too often, the patisseries are highly addictive!
We have stopped in twice this week for their lunch special (ordered different items each time) and have not been disappointed with the sandwiches, quiches and pastries. The prices are great too!
Laura★★☆☆☆
Got a basic order wrong, gave us a chicken sandwich when we ordered pork, and a courgette quiche when we ordered brocolli. They barely heated up the quiche, half of it was hard and refrigerated cold. Couldn't go back as we took our lunch elsewhere to picnic. Was too late when we found out.
The servers were also incredibly slow (but took care to wrap things nicely) and the line was dozens of people long (only boulangerie open during the holidays). It's no wonder why they are already rated low. I don't know how they're in business still... Just be more conscientious if you want to stay in business.
Jesse Browne★★★★★
Underrated quality pastry shoppe - there are two things I would return to Tours for, one of them is the "Paris Tours" Vinci makes, it is the best form of anything similar to a Paris Brest - understated but the most unique and quality pastry and I haven't found anything like it in all of France.

I highly recommend them; the experience was perfect! They responded quickly, the ordering and payment process was easy, the cake pickup was very well organized, and the bakery itself was amazing! The number cake was beautiful, visually stunning. The taste lived up to the design—not too sweet, a perfectly balanced all-chocolate cake. Thank you so much, I'll definitely be ordering again!
Wendy Plassais★★★★★
Absolutely fantastic! I'm leaving a review a bit late, as the cake was made for our wedding in April 2023. I never got around to leaving a review, but seeing that people are still talking about it three years later speaks volumes about how excellent it was! A beautiful cake, over a meter tall, for 130 people. Houda was incredibly professional! Hygiene, delivery, communication—everything was perfect. The cake was simply excellent: light, flavorful, everything we wanted. It was a challenge to make a wedding cake for so many people, while respecting certain criteria (we wanted a tall cake, for example!), and she succeeded brilliantly! I highly recommend her.
Raphaëlle Amaro★★★★★
I ordered cakes for my little boy's birthday. They are always beautiful and absolutely delicious. We recommend them 100%!
Aminata DIA★★★★★
I've been ordering my cakes from her since 2021: weddings, gender reveals, birthdays, baptisms.
The cakes are beautiful and so delicious.
We highly recommend her!

We hired Houda for our wedding cake and we are absolutely thrilled! Houda is not only lovely, but she also knew how to adapt to our requests. She is very professional, attentive, and kind. The cake was stunning, even better than we had imagined, and on top of that, it was delicious. All our guests loved it!
We wholeheartedly recommend Doud Pâtisserie and we can't wait to use her services for other special occasions 🙏🏼

Monsieur Jean★★★★★
Best cookie in town 🍪
Virgile Copin★★★★★
We thought the reviews were exaggerated, but they weren't at all; the cookies are absolutely excellent.
We tried the Milky Way. The dough is incredibly soft, the center barely cooked, and the outside is crispy, so you'll find something to your liking no matter how you prefer your cookie. The ingredients used are high quality.
The hazelnut cookie flan is also delicious, and if you want to try it, come early (before 4:00 or 4:30 pm), as the flans seem to be very popular and sell out very quickly!
The service is generous (perhaps too much so?), so the value for money is, by Tours standards, unbeatable. Absolutely unbeatable.
The only downside is the limited number of tables. During peak hours, the wait can be long, with no guarantee of a seat. Yet the dining room is large and spacious. It would still be so with two or three more tables for four.
Visitors will certainly appreciate the peaceful atmosphere while enjoying what I, too, consider the best cookies in Tours, and perhaps even among the best in France? If there's a cookie competition, Raq&Jo would be wise to enter!
Edit: The couple behind Elodie G.'s 1-star review arrived at the same time as us and cut in line without any consideration. They went and sat down without ordering, even though there were already six people in line. They are rude; please disregard their comments.

Best cookie in Tours! I have to stop by every time I'm in town. I highly recommend it, especially if you like New York cookies 🙂

We used CT du Gâteau for our wedding using both an American style wedding cake & piece montée. The flavors and presentation were incredible! So thankful we found them!

Yuqin Wang★★★★★
We ordered a Coconut Passion Fruit Dome birthday cake for 6 to 8 people and it was absolutely delicious! The cake was truly delightful: fresh and flavorful fruit, a light cream with a hint of coconut, not at all cloying. It was also perfectly sweet, just the right amount, resulting in a very fresh and indulgent treat.
A real delight, I highly recommend it! 😍

This is a simple place serving up reasonably priced food for those seeking budget-friendly and/or quick options while sightseeing in this area of Tours. We popped in for a quick bite to eat on a Sunday early afternoon recently when most other restaurants around were closed. Croq Pultry with curry was quite interesting and ham & cheese croissant melted were both ok. Coffees just ok on the day.
Satu Kankaansyrjä★★★★☆
Best in Tours! Love their cannelé and croissant d’amandes! Would love for them to have a proper espresso machine..

Delicious pastries and friendly staff. I tried the fougasse with potatoes and bacon, a cannelé, the almond croissant, and the pain au lait viennoise; all were very good. People who are serious about their coffee may not like the drinks here as much, but if you’re looking for a nice breakfast, a quick lunch, or a tasty dessert, this is a great choice.

Perfect for what it is - quick and delicious, with a beautiful place to sit outside. I love staying nearby when I visit Tours, and I can’t wait to return in the mornings while I’m there this August - du pain délicieux & les cafés sont pas mals 🙂

Tips for Choosing the Right Bakery in Tours
Navigating a city full of good bread is a delicious problem to have, but a few insider tips can elevate your experience from good to exceptional. While the list above highlights the best of the best, understanding what to look for will help you appreciate the craft behind the counter. Here is how to ensure you are getting the freshest, most authentic product possible during your stay.
- Look for the "Artisan Boulanger" Sign: In France, the title Artisan Boulanger is legally protected. It means the bread is kneaded, shaped, and baked on the premises. If a shop doesn’t display this sign, they are likely baking from frozen dough. Always prioritize the artisan label.
- Ask for "Bien Cuite": If you love a deep, caramelized crust and a more pronounced roasted wheat flavor, ask for a baguette that is bien cuite (well-baked). Conversely, if you prefer a softer, paler crust, ask for pas trop cuite.
- Visit at Peak Hours: To experience bread at its absolute best, time your visit with the morning rush (around 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM) or the pre-dinner rush (4:30 PM to 6:00 PM). This is when ovens are cycling most frequently, ensuring you get a loaf that is still warm from the oven.
- Don’t Skip the Savory Section: While croissants get the glory, the savory offerings in Tours are spectacular. Look for feuilletés (puff pastry filled with cheese or ham), quiches, or the local rillettes served on fresh bread. It is often the true test of a baker’s versatility.
- Embrace the Local Specialty: You must try pain tourné or a loaf made with local Loire Valley flour. It is denser and more rustic than a baguette, offering a tangy, earthy flavor that pairs perfectly with the region’s goat cheeses and wines.
The true beauty of the bakery scene in Tours lies in its accessibility. You don’t need a reservation or a large budget to experience world-class baking; you just need an appetite and a willingness to stand in line with the locals. Each shop on this list brings something unique to the table, whether it is a generational recipe for rye bread or a revolutionary take on the classic éclair.
As you wander through the city, let the scent of warm butter and caramelized sugar be your guide. Stopping at these bakeries is not just about eating; it is about connecting with the rhythm of daily life in the Loire Valley. Take your time, talk to the bakers, and enjoy the simple, profound pleasure of a perfect piece of bread.
