12 Best Shopping Spots in Dijon

From the medieval charm of its historic center to the modern energy of its rejuvenated districts, Dijon offers a shopping experience that is refreshingly distinct from the generic high streets found in other major cities. As the capital of Burgundy, this city balances its deep-rooted heritage with contemporary French style, making it a premier destination for those who appreciate quality, craft, and gastronomy. Whether you are hunting for a bespoke fashion piece, a rare antique, or the perfect jar of mustard to take home, the city invites you to explore its cobblestone lanes and elegant boulevards at a leisurely pace.

Understanding the layout of Dijon is key to maximizing your retail experience. The city is incredibly walkable, with the majority of premier boutiques clustered around the pedestrianized center, specifically between Rue de la Liberté and the historic Les Halles market. This density allows visitors to transition seamlessly from browsing luxury French brands to discovering independent artisans within just a few minutes on foot. It is this accessibility that makes shopping here feel less like a chore and more like a cultural immersion.

For the gourmand, Dijon is a pilgrimage site. While the famous mustard is the obvious export, the true local treasure lies in the surrounding vineyards and farms that supply the city’s specialty food stores. Here, you will find bottles of Crémant de Bourgogne, cassis liqueur, and pain d’épices (spiced bread) that rarely make it to international markets. These edible souvenirs offer a sensory connection to the region, allowing you to relive your trip long after you have returned home.

Fashion enthusiasts will find that Dijon punches above its weight. The city serves as a regional hub for high-end French and European labels, offering curated collections that often sell out quickly in Paris. Unlike the bustling capital, the boutiques here provide a more relaxed and personalized service, where shopkeepers have the time to offer styling advice and build genuine rapport with their customers.

Beyond the modern retail chains, the true soul of Dijon’s commerce lies in its antique dealers and artisans. The antique quarter, centered around Rue Verrerie, is a treasure trove of Burgundian furniture, vintage jewelry, and historical curiosities. Shopping here is akin to visiting a museum where every object has a price tag, offering a sustainable and unique alternative to mass-produced goods.

To help you navigate this diverse retail landscape, we have curated a list of the most compelling shopping destinations in the city. These locations represent the best of what Dijon has to offer, spanning culinary delights, high fashion, and local craftsmanship.

Toison d’Or Shopping Center is a very pleasant shopping mall. It’s clean, well maintained, and easy to navigate. The bathrooms were notably clean, which is always appreciated. Galleries Lafayette is one stop all shopping from men to women from casual to formal. Perfum or hand bag, shoes or boots? Scarf or hat this place has it all under one roof. I love how the have all type of clothing for all seasons every time. In case you are travelling and need swimsuits in the middle of winter then here they have it and of course winter stuff is there too. Or whatever season it might be

On 22 July, 2024, my wife and I came here to check out if luxury brands were available. It appeared the luxury was confined to Paris. Anyhow, we did some window shopping in the nice shopping environment.

Such a large and beautiful department store and they don't have a bathroom for customers. I have chosen 3 items, then my large coffee I had in the morning wanted to leave my body. I asked for a restroom but surprisingly they told me they haven't one. So I left the building and went to my hotel a few blocks away. After that I wasn't in the mood to go back again, because it was super hot. Bad luck for Galeries Lafayette, because they lost a revenue of 280 Euro. IMHO every store this size should have a restroom for customers.
Con Stroulios★★★☆☆
Smaller version and a little bit more compact as a department store, but nonetheless stocks the big brand names, and more. Modern looking, not a lot of grandeur that is synonymous with thus brand. But no toilets for the public, 5 floors of shopping area with hundreds of people and no toilet facilities!!! Not happy. Where do the staff go?
Marcus Eby★★★★★
By far one of the most beautiful malls in the world. It has three main parts. The main Galleria which is mostly for women. It is the building on the right when you look at the map. The Galleria for men. The building on the left. And for food and gourmet cooking the building below the men's building. Each mazing and special in their own right. The food building also has a market on the lowest floor that has some rare finds for food.

Excellent visit to the renovated Dauphine Dijon. The new Fnac store is a major upgrade; the two-floor layout is well-organized, especially the dedicated corners for telephony and multimedia. Since I do most of my tech shopping here, I really appreciate the improved flow and modern aesthetic of this location. Highly recommended for any tech enthusiast.

C.J.L Le studio★☆☆☆☆
If you're looking for begging, filth, noise, excrement on the ground, and Uber Eats delivery drivers invading the city center, then you can deign to use this highly dubious passageway... if you can even get in, because there's always frequent parking in the entrance... (which blocks access to garages and shops). There's absolutely no security in this passageway, which can quickly become terrifying after dark. Note: a few shops and a piercing studio are trying to stay afloat as best they can. A real ordeal for the residents, in any case...

I don't think there is any store in Dijon bigger than this based on my little knowledge. I went there and I bought everything I needed. It is only human beings and animals they don't sell! Is it food, kitchen utensils, furniture, all types of electronics, toilet facilities, sport equipments, electrical appliances, bicycles and scooters, clothing, etc to mention but a few. It is much larger than IKEA with much more items. My first visit I spent 4 hours there trying to make choices and my legs were hurting so badly and I ended up exceeding my budget by many euros but it was worth it. Anything hard to find they sell and they have variety of prices that must meet your budget.

Large supermarket with a wide range of everything. Can't see the point of their self checkout as they are separated depending on your mean of payment creating longer queues than at standard tills.

A lively and authentic market in the heart of Dijon. The building itself is beautiful, and inside you can enjoy the local atmosphere with fresh produce, cheese, meat, bakery items, and regional specialties. It is a great place to experience everyday French food culture, not only as a tourist attraction but as a real local market. Very nice to combine with a walk through the old town. You can buy many local items at one place (Dijon musted, ...). But this is not the lowest price in the town.
Loo Yeo★★★★★
Planned in 1868 on a former Jacobins site already used for market trade, Dijon’s Halles gave the city a cleaner, more convenient covered food hall. Built between 1873 and 1875, the four iron-and-glass pavilions turned that practical aim into civic architecture, with crossing market lanes adapted from an Eiffel-company planning idea and carried through by Dijon’s municipal architects. The building still says what it does: arched openings, brickwork, animal and fruit motifs, and the city arms make food trade visible on the façade. Protected since 1975, it has not retreated into monument status. It still begins with traders, market mornings and the daily business of buying food under a 19th-century roof.

Busy market for fruit, vegetable, fish and meat. Amazing selection of cheeses! Mainly for the locals with just a few visitors. There's several stalls with locals specialities, mustard, wine, cassis, gingerbread and biscuits. Well worth a visit. Open on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 8am to 1pm.

The true heartbeat of Dijon. Les Halles centrales is an absolute paradise for food lovers. The indoor and outdoor stalls are packed with the freshest local cheeses, meats, produce, and Burgundy specialties. The energy here on a market morning is fantastic. It's the perfect place to grab local treats and experience authentic French culture.

We had an excellent experience shopping at Primark. The store was impressively organized, making it easy to navigate through their extensive range of stylish yet affordable fashion and homeware. I was particularly pleased with the quality of the items relative to the price point, and the checkout process was surprisingly efficient despite the store being quite busy. It remains a reliable go-to destination for trendy essentials and great value

It is what it is in every country that you go to. The set up is good but when it comes to paying you are always in a massive queue because they have got 15 check outs but only 3 or 4 are staffed. The same story in every country......

Inexpensive and yet you can find things made of cotton. Quality is as you'd expect for the cost. Currently I'm very frustrated bc they seem to be in that trend if not carrying XL and XXL. It's not welcoming to their larger customers.

Insider Tips for a Successful Shopping Trip in Dijon

Navigating the retail scene in a foreign city requires a bit of local knowledge to ensure you make the most of your time and budget. From understanding tax refunds to knowing when the locals shop, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are essential tips to enhance your shopping experience in the Burgundian capital.

Plan around the lunch break. While Dijon is a major city, it retains a strong provincial rhythm. Many independent boutiques and artisan shops close for a substantial lunch break, often between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. To avoid staring at locked doors, plan your shopping for the morning (10:00 AM to 12:00 PM) or the afternoon (2:00 PM to 7:00 PM). Use the lunch window to enjoy a long, leisurely meal like a true Dijonnais.

Hit the markets early. If your shopping itinerary includes the covered market, Les Halles, or the weekly street markets, arriving early is crucial. Vendors typically set up around dawn and begin packing up by 12:30 PM. Early birds get the best selection of fresh produce, baked goods, and limited artisan products, as well as the opportunity to interact with vendors before the crowds descend.

Don’t forget your passport for Tax-Free Shopping. If you are visiting from outside the European Union, you are likely eligible for a VAT (Value Added Tax) refund on purchases exceeding a certain threshold (usually around 100 euros in a single store on the same day). To process the "détaxe" forms, retailers will require your original passport, not a photocopy. Keep your passport secure but accessible when you plan to make significant purchases.

Embrace the "Bonjour" etiquette. In France, customer service is a two-way street. Always greet the shopkeeper with a polite "Bonjour" (or "Bonsoir" in the evening) when entering a store, and a "Merci, au revoir" when leaving. This small cultural gesture signals respect and will drastically improve the quality of service you receive. Do not touch merchandise without acknowledging the staff first, especially in smaller, high-end boutiques.

Bring a reusable tote bag. France has largely phased out single-use plastic bags. While most stores offer paper bags or charge a small fee for sturdier totes, bringing your own lightweight, foldable shopping bag is more convenient and environmentally friendly. It also helps you carry your culinary purchases from the market without the risk of flimsy paper handles breaking on the walk back to your hotel.

Check for seasonal sales (Les Soldes). The French government strictly regulates sale periods. Outside of these windows, "sales" are rare. The main event happens twice a year: the winter sale (starting early January) and the summer sale (starting late June). If you are looking for designer bargains, timing your visit to coincide with these periods can yield significant savings, though the stores will be busier.

Dijon is a city that rewards the curious. While the grand pedestrian street of Rue de la Liberté offers familiar names and a lively atmosphere, the true magic often hides in the narrow side streets and vaulted passageways. By allowing yourself time to wander and engage with the local merchants, you are likely to leave with more than just a shopping bag—you will carry home a piece of Burgundian culture and a story worth telling.

Whether you are curating a wine cellar, updating your wardrobe, or searching for a unique antique centerpiece, Dijon offers a depth of quality that is increasingly rare in the modern retail world. Take your time, savor the experience, and enjoy the art of discovery in one of France’s most elegant cities.
