Finding a great meal in Montmartre can be surprisingly tricky. The streets surrounding the Sacré-Cœur are packed with tourist traps offering overpriced steak-frites and mediocre onion soup. However, for those willing to walk just a few minutes away from the main square, a world of authentic French bistros, hidden wine bars, and neighborhood favorites awaits.
The 18th arrondissement is a village within a city, characterized by steep cobbled lanes and artistic history. While the view from the basilica steps is breathtaking, the dining scene down the hill offers a more grounded, flavorful experience. The key is to avoid the restaurants with aggressive door staff and laminated photo menus.
Instead, look for the places where Parisians are lingering over a long lunch or where the chalkboard menu changes daily. From traditional brasseries serving hearty classics to modern kitchens reinventing French gastronomy, the area boasts a diverse culinary landscape. Whether you need a quick crêpe before sightseeing or a romantic dinner after sunset, there is a table for you.
This guide focuses on quality, atmosphere, and value. We have prioritized establishments that respect the produce, the heritage of French cooking, and the customer’s intelligence. You won’t find generic fast food or microwave-reheated dishes on this list.
Because the hill is steep and the streets are winding, we have included spots that are easily accessible on foot from the funicular or the Place du Tertre. Each recommendation offers something unique, from intimate wine pairings to the best croissants in the neighborhood.
To help you navigate the culinary geography, we have curated a list of the 12 best restaurants near the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. These are the places we send our friends and family when they want to eat well without falling into a tourist trap.
Below, you will find our top picks, followed by essential tips for navigating the local dining scene like a pro.

Very friendly staff and excellent food. I highly recommend trying the escargots – they were delicious. The salmon was perfectly cooked, fresh, and full of flavor. The foie gras was also excellent.
Everything tasted fresh and well prepared. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating, and the air conditioning inside was a great bonus on a warm day.
Definitely worth a stop if you’re visiting Paris!

Amazing food and a wonderful experience! Everything we ordered was delicious, fresh, and full of flavour. The staff were incredibly kind, welcoming, and attentive, making us feel right at home. We would definitely come back and highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Paris!

This place was absolutely perfect for our team dinner. The food is delicious very authentic, the service is outstanding. The waiters and the manager are very attentive. Food came out right away. We truly enjoyed our time there.

The duck leg was absolutely delicious, and the sauce was so amazing that I kept wanting more. The beef was incredibly tender—I couldn't believe how soft it was without being chewy at all.
Unfortunately, we found a hair in one of the dishes, but after we informed the staff, they immediately made a new one for us. The male server was extremely friendly, cheerful, and handled the situation very professionally.

This French cafe and restaurant in the area offers a delightful dining experience for both light meals and hearty lunches and dinners. The establishment boasts both indoor and outdoor seating, providing a pleasant ambiance with stunning views. I highly recommend making a reservation in advance, especially during peak hours. However, if you’re in the vicinity and the restaurant isn’t overly crowded, you can simply walk in and enjoy your meal. The food here is simply amazing, and the service is impeccable. Once you place your order, all the dishes arrive promptly.

We came here two days in a row, because it was so good!
Great food, onion soup was amazing!
We really recommend confit de canard, it just melts in your mouth.
Desserts are also very tasty as well as the cocktails.
Glad we came here, you can feel that they pour their heart into the food ❤️
The owners are lovely💕

We had a delicious ancient raclette experience. The meats were quality, the potatoes the best we ever tried and the whole experience in the Tavern with the coals melting away our own raclette cheese cube was something to remember.
Price-quality was on point and service with a smile. We would have loved French music in the background but the easy going hit songs were also fine.
Definitely recommend this place.

So so good! Just off the main busy area of Montmart! This beautiful building has amazing food, very nice service and even though they didn’t have kids menu they did make a pasta the way my kid wanted it! Highly recommend this

A very good choice if you want to try authentic French dishes at a reasonable price and in a place that isn’t overly touristy. The restaurant is small but full of charm, the service is attentive, and the food is genuinely well-prepared. Most guests order either fondue or raclette, and in both cases the experience tends to be very enjoyable.

Delicious. The escargot was divine. The frog legs were cooked perfectly. The steak was exquisite and the accompanying sauces were surprising. I have never liked blue cheese and the blue cheese sauce was my favorite!! I need that recipe. The tarte tatin was the perfect end to the meal!

Beautiful experience. Small restaurant and i believe one would usually need to make a reservation, yet we had the fortune of getting a table without one. The waiter seemed stressed, but remained professional and kind; we even had a chat with him after our dinner.
The food was amazing, the whole process or preparation seemed very high in quality. We ordered froglegs, steak for 2 and a crème brûlée. Water, bread and butter was on the house. In total we payed 101€. This is a lot of money, yet in our opinion it was totally worth it!
Lorraine Garvie★★★★★
Really great experience - food incredible - service brilliant - reasonable price for steak and wine pricing is best I've seen in Paris.
Book by email 2 weeks in advance - easy getting a table but it's a small restaurant so you may be disappointed if you just turn up.
Chat GPT recommended Sacre Fleur and a chef that I know and they were both spot on thank you.
Bear in mind it's June and it's hot. The restaurant is small - with some fans. Don't overdress!

What an absolute gem of a restaurant.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this is a genuinely French restaurant, not one that simply borrows French names or dishes. The atmosphere, the attention to detail, the quality of the ingredients, and the execution of every plate reflected true French hospitality and culinary tradition.
The food was outstanding from start to finish. Every dish was beautifully prepared, full of flavour, and made with obvious care and expertise. The quality of the ingredients really shines through, particularly the meat, which was cooked to perfection and among the best I have tasted in a long time. It is increasingly rare to find a restaurant that combines authenticity, consistency, and such high standards while still offering excellent value for money.
What made the experience even more memorable was the service. Kendel and Silvan were absolutely exceptional in every aspect. Professional, attentive, knowledgeable, warm, and genuinely passionate about ensuring guests have a wonderful experience. They struck the perfect balance between being attentive without ever being intrusive, making us feel welcomed and valued throughout the entire meal.
Customer service of this standard is difficult to find. Every interaction was handled with genuine care, professionalism, and a smile. It is clear that they take great pride in what they do, and it elevated an already excellent dining experience into something truly special.
If you are looking for authentic French cuisine, outstanding quality, perfectly cooked meat, reasonable prices, and some of the best service you could hope to receive, this restaurant deserves to be at the very top of your list.
A huge thank you to Kendel and Silvan for making our visit so memorable. We will definitely be returning and recommending this place to everyone we know.

What a hidden gem! Tiny restaurant, reservation is a must, but WOW. The food was incredible, frogs legs, French onion soup, salmon and duck. Everything was amazing. The service was superb, the waiters are so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble even with my very rusty French! A truly excellent meal, would highly reccomend!

The place looks very nice and is designed with attention to details. The view to Paris is also great as well as the service.
Unfortunately the food is not on the same level - we had the brunch menu - both the bacon and the salmon plate were below average - the bacon was actually basic ham from the supermarket and the cheese also not great.
Such a pitty that no effort is made to serve good food.

Quaint little place just below the Sacré Coeur. Nice view of the city from the window seats. Small menu, but everyone’s meal was delicious. I had the salmon burger, which had some exotic seasonings, maybe from North Africa. I thought I tasted a hint of cinnamon. Everyone thought it was delicious. The service was courteous and fast.

We stopped here for breakfast. Even though the kitchen opened at 11:30 AM, they let us sit there when we arrived around 10:50 AM and served us coffee. It’s a nice, cute little spot right above the basilica. The eggs we had were authentically French and made with a delightful touch. The dish came with tasty bread crumbs, offering some savory flavors that were interesting and unusual. The price is a bit higher than the average in Paris, but it’s perhaps worth it for the location. Overall, we had a great breakfast experience with a wonderful view

Visited the restaurant as part of my team building event during the June heatwave. The atmosphere was great, with live music. The food was excellent, especially the well-seasoned fish, which was moist. The only downside was that the air conditioning wasn't cold enough, but that's understandable given it was 40°C outside.

Very cozy atmosphere during my visit, aesthetically blended architect that fits seamlessly in its wonderful neighbourhood and with great food. Especially loved the beef bourguignon, although it would be best to pair with the bread to offset its saltiness if it's too much for you. Definitely a great choice with our Go City pass!

We had a lovely family dinner. The service was wonderful! Saif was so attentive I made us feel right at home! My name is Catherine so I wanted the dish to take home. He helped me figure out which one and packaged that beautifully for me! It really was a special and memorable evening.

Gorgeous seats out front enjoying montmarte, Germain served us and was so lovely, group of 9 and was very patient and friendly. One of us was allergic to nuts and he didn’t have any plain croissants left so he went to a neighbouring restaurant and got her fresh baguette from the oven! He also noticed some girls hot in the sun side of the table so without asking elongated the awnings for them. Lovely, highly reccomend. Also such reasonable prices ! Nutella crepes for €7 in the middle of montmarte was so ideal

Perfect dinner in Montmartre!
We visited La Mère Catherine this week and it was honestly the highlight of our trip. It’s hard to find a spot in such a popular area that feels this authentic, but this place nailed it.
The onion soup was incredible—exactly what you dream of when you think of Paris. The duck was cooked to perfection, absolutely delicious and full of flavor.
What really stood out, though, was the staff. The service was brilliant—super professional but also very warm and welcoming. If you’re looking for great food and a fantastic atmosphere on Montmartre, don't miss this one. We’ll definitely be back!

My husband & I enjoyed our final evening in Paris with a lovely dinner at Chez Marie! Our dinner included beef tartare which I had waited all week for! It did not disappoint! Loved every bite. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent as well. Even though the restaurant was busy, our waiter, Daniel, was incredibly attentive and friendly, making sure we had everything we needed. The prices were very reasonable, and I highly recommend this place!

Le Lamarck was a great dining stop. The food was excellent, and I ordered the grilled duck breast with risotto, which was rich, well-prepared, and very satisfying. I sat out on the patio, which made the meal feel relaxed and enjoyable, especially after walking around the area.
The staff were also helpful and welcoming, which added to the overall experience. It is a nice place for a slower sit-down meal, with good food, a pleasant outdoor setting, and friendly service.

This review is long overdue.
We were the first people in the restaurant (last table by the window), but by the time we left the place was packed. We were greeted by the owner, who told us about the specials of the day. We speak just a smattering of French, so he switched to English.
Bread arrived at our table, along with a bottle of wine (Croix de Pretres) he recommended. We ordered Croquettes, venison bavette, entrecote, and a lovely dessert (yogurt and dried fruits?). We asked about an after-dinner drink to go with the dessert, and he produced a sort of brandy made of dried prunes (Veille prunes). Our meal was perfectly cooked, and the evening perfectly paced. The atmosphere was both cozy and lively.
We liked it so much we returned twice more (and at our same table) – and we were only in Paris for 8 days. Looking forward to our return in October 2027 for the Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre

(sorry for the bad photo the food was too good that I forgot to take one earlier)
Our friend suggested this restaurant and we were not let down, the waiters spoke perfect English and were very polite and helpful.
My partner wanted risotto and I wanted the steak by she got too nervous while trying to speak french that she also ordered the steak, and I can say it was delicious.
This restaurant is a little more tucked out of the way to some of the more busy restaurants in the area, but I would highly recommend making the climb to get to it.
Tow points to beware
The steps, unless you are young and fit. You can take a tram lift up (included in the metro day pass)
Don't use metro Barbès - Rochechouart, dangerous area where we were nearly pick pocketed.

After visiting Sacre Coeur Bisilica, we went to this restaurant which is nearby. We ordered duck breast, duck confit, risotto and pasta. The food and service were excellent. We loved the duck breast in particular and so we ordered another dish. The dessert of pavlova was indeed a pleasant surprise. This meal was one of the best during our stay in Paris.

A really wonderful restaurant and owner. The boeuf bourguignon was rich and delicious especially with a nice glass of wine. Le Cabanon de la Butte is a gem that’s absolutely worth the trek up the hill. This traditional restaurant serves authentic French cuisine with warmth and expertise that’s increasingly rare to find.
We visited as a family of seven with a booking, and everything we ordered was excellent. I had the beef bourguignon, which was cooked to perfection, the beef was incredibly tender and flavourful, so good that everyone at the table wanted a taste! The entire menu impressed us, with each dish showcasing classic French cooking at its best.
The staff were wonderful, taking the time to kindly explain everything on the menu and making us feel welcome throughout our meal. The atmosphere captures that traditional French restaurant charm beautifully, even if our photos don’t quite capture the experience.
Make sure to book ahead, this place gets busy for good reason. If you’re looking for authentic French food served with genuine hospitality, Le Cabanon de la Butte is a must-visit.

Bistro Le Coeur proves that top-quality cuisine doesn’t have to come with a formal atmosphere. It’s gourmet dining in the relaxed, unpretentious setting of a true bistro.
From the warm welcome to the attentive service, every detail reflects genuine hospitality. The dining room is filled with natural light, the wine list is excellent, and the by-the-glass selection is particularly impressive.
I had the black pollock with braised spinach, creamy fish fumet, and trout roe. It was exceptional. A recipe by Chef Nicolas Verdera, perfectly executed by the kitchen team. Every element on the plate was balanced and thoughtfully prepared.
It’s the kind of place you return to not only for the food, but for the entire experience.
The Parisian (Citizen of the world)★★★★★
After many disappointing restaurants in Paris with overrated stellar reviews I was so happy to lunch at this Bistro. All the reviews agree on how good the food is and I second that. I had the brandade, one of my favorite classics and it was delicious. The bread was also delicious (crispy and tasty baguette) and was perfect to mop the juices. If I were to say what the signature of the kitchen is: subtle elevation of classics by choosing good quality ingredients and using excellent cooking skills.
Even the business card has the vibe aligning with the good taste and quality.
If you look at the menu and find a dish you like at a price you can afford, you will get food that doesn’t disappoint. Which is more than can be said of in Paris most of the time.
The cherry on the cake: my waitress, whose first working day it was, was a ray of sunshine

It looks super cozy! It was quiet on the terrace, although cars did pass by occasionally, which caused a bit more noise. The atmosphere was very decorative and the terrace looked very cozy with the nice chairs and tables. The waiter was very friendly to everyone. Real plus points for that!

• Dessert: Île flottante 🍧
• Description: Vanilla pudding from Madagascar, caramel, and caramelized peanuts.

Second review of “Eat like a local in Paris”. We tried Fric-Frac which was downhill from Sacre Coeur before we tackled an afternoon in the Montmartre area. The bread is homemade and the ingredients were amazing and fresh. They had more traditional Croque Monsieurs and more creative ones too. It was hard to decide. I chose their version of a Croque Madame which had a soft boiled egg inside instead of the traditional fried egg. It was excellent. I highly suggest the online scannable menu vs a paper menu. They have videos of every sandwich which are quite enticing! The cucumber salad had a hint of wasabi in it, which was quite original and refreshing. Overall great choice.

Great little spot with a variety of sandwiches! The mushroom soup is very earthy. My husband didn't like it, but I did. It was very one note and tasted like a liquid mushroom; if that's ok with you, then get it. It was a cold rainy day where we visited, so I was all about the soup. The bread was divine and the sandwiches scrumptious. Add the truffle cream! Well worth it.

A great find near Sacre coeur in our last night in Paris and my favorite sandwich I ate in my entire one week long trip. We had the Aztec and the Bandito, as well as the apple dessert - both were very delicious, slightly crunchy but not too hard, big enough and very tasty. The staff is very friendly, they speak English and the atmosphere is super laid back and relaxing. Everything is done conveniently- you scan the menu, order and pay directly from your phone. I would return many times if I had more time in Paris, alas maybe next time.

We had a nice launch at this place. Foodwas tasty and coffee was good as well. It was not that crowded, so reservation was not needed. Waiters are polite. Prices are a bit on a higher level. Parking could be an issue in part of the city if you are coming by car.

Walked by this restaurant a few days before finally going in. The food...the staff...the atmosphere, all perfect. They also had wine sommelier on staff that came over to assist us. I highly recommend this restaurant in Place du Tertre.

Great service and a fantastic location. It's the perfect spot for people watching while enjoying a glass of wine or a cold drink surrounded by the artwork of local artists. It's inspiring to think that legendary painters like Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh once walked these same streets, adding to the charm and history of the experience.

Our favorite spot for people watching in Montmartre! Food is always tasty, wine selection is great, the waitstaff is helpful and attentive. You can get a blanket to enjoy sitting outside to watch artists work in the square with the Sacre Coeur dome in the background. We’ve been coming here for years, every time we visit Paris we grab a glass of wine here. Definitely recommend! A*

Super touristic place but food was actually very nice. We had onion soup and gluten free pasta bolognese, gluten free fries as well. Prices are relatively high but given the location, it’s acceptable. So! need a decent gluten free lunch in the area, this is the place.

What an absolute find. The food is stunning, the location is perfect and the staff are so incredibly nice. We had the beef bourguignon and the ractiflette and they were both stunning. Thank you so much for a lovely evening.

Charming restaurant in a great location in Montmartre. Love the Ratatouille theme. We ate delicious onion soup with Diablos to drink. Our server was delightful—so friendly and accommodating. She made the experience the best!! Merci beaucoup!!

Excellent atmosphere, food, service. If you want to eat good traditional food this is the perfect place. We ordered snails, onion soup, duck "cassoulet" and the wine that the waitress recommended. Perfect! We will come back to try other dishes before we leave Paris. ❤️ ps: everything is homemade, even the desserts

Duck confit and escargot were delicious. Staff was attentive and made sure we were satisfied. No complaints
Tips for Dining Near Sacré-Cœur
Dining in Montmartre requires a bit of local knowledge to ensure you have the best possible experience. The neighborhood operates on a different rhythm than the rest of Paris, blending residential calm with high tourist traffic. By following a few simple guidelines regarding timing, ordering, and etiquette, you can avoid common pitfalls and eat like a true Parisian.
Avoid the Immediate Perimeter: Restaurants directly facing the basilica or lining the Place du Tertre often rely on one-time tourist traffic. Walk five minutes down the hill toward Rue des Abbesses or Rue Caulaincourt. The prices drop significantly, and the quality increases exponentially the further you get from the main viewpoint.
Understand French Meal Times: Lunch service typically runs strictly from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM, and dinner rarely starts before 7:30 PM. If you are hungry at 6:00 PM, you will find most kitchens closed. Plan your sightseeing around these hours, or opt for a café that serves "service continu" (all-day service) if you need an early bite.
** Look for the "Formule" or "Prix Fixe":** Many excellent bistros offer a set menu (entrée + plat or plat + dessert) at lunchtime for a fraction of the à la carte price. This is the best way to eat high-quality French food on a budget. Check the chalkboard outside for the day’s "Formule Midi."
Book Ahead for Dinner: While the area is dense with restaurants, the good ones are small and fill up with locals. A quick phone call or an online reservation for dinner is highly recommended, especially on weekends. For lunch, walking in is usually fine if you arrive right at noon.
Embrace the Stairs: The streets around Montmartre are steep, and some of the best hidden gems are located halfway up a staircase. Wear comfortable shoes and consider the terrain part of the dining adventure. The calories burned walking up the hill justify the dessert course.
Check the Chalkboard: The most authentic places often have a limited menu written on a mirror or a blackboard. This indicates that the chef is cooking based on what was fresh at the market that morning. If a menu is massive and static, it is often a sign of frozen or pre-prepared food.
Tip Modestly: Service is included in the price of your meal in France (service compris). However, it is customary to leave a small "pourboire" (tip) of a few euros or round up the bill if the service was excellent. You are not expected to tip 20%.
Order Tap Water: To save money and reduce plastic waste, ask for a "carafe d’eau" (a pitcher of tap water). It is free, safe, and legally required for restaurants to provide it. This leaves more room in your budget for a better bottle of wine.
Learn Basic French Pleasantries: A simple "Bonjour" when you enter and a "Merci, au revoir" when you leave go a long way. The staff in the better restaurants appreciate the effort, and it immediately sets a respectful tone for your meal.
Beware of the "Special" Pitch: If a waiter approaches you on the street with a "special price" or a free drink offer, keep walking. Quality restaurants do not need to solicit customers on the sidewalk; their reputation brings people in.
The culinary landscape around the Sacré-Cœur is a study in contrasts. You can find a €5 crêpe to go or a €150 tasting menu within a five-minute walk of each other. The beauty of this neighborhood lies in its ability to cater to the backpacker on a budget and the gourmand seeking a Michelin-starred experience simultaneously.
Ultimately, the best meal in Montmartre is the one that feels unhurried. Take your time, watch the locals walk their dogs past your table, and soak in the atmosphere of a village that has managed to retain its soul despite the crowds. Bon appétit.
