La Rochelle is one of those rare French cities that feels like a permanent vacation. With its historic Vieux Port, sun-bleached limestone towers, and a maritime breeze that carries the scent of salt and fresh crêpes, it draws travelers who want culture without the chaos of larger metropolises. The city’s compact center is wonderfully walkable, but finding a place to sleep that doesn’t drain your entire travel budget can be the difference between a good trip and a great one.
Accommodation costs in La Rochelle fluctuate wildly depending on the season, especially during the Francofolies music festival or the peak summer months of July and August. While the city is home to its fair share of luxury boutique hotels and high-end spa retreats, there is a robust market for budget-conscious travelers. The key is knowing where to look, how far you are willing to walk, and what amenities you are willing to trade for a lower nightly rate.
A cheap hotel in La Rochelle doesn’t have to mean a grim room on a noisy arterial road. Many of the city’s most affordable stays are family-run two-star hotels tucked into 18th-century buildings, or modern budget chains located just a short bike ride from the harbor. You can often find clean, comfortable lodging with a private bathroom, free Wi-Fi, and a decent breakfast for under €70 a night if you book strategically.
The geography of La Rochelle works in the budget traveler’s favor. The area immediately around the Vieux Port is the most expensive, but neighborhoods like Saint-Nicolas, the Quartier du Gabut, or the area near the train station offer excellent value. Staying slightly outside the tourist core often means you are only a five or ten-minute walk from the main attractions, while also being closer to where locals actually eat and drink.
This guide focuses on practical, well-reviewed options that consistently deliver value. We have prioritized hotels with honest pricing, reliable housekeeping, and locations that allow you to explore the city on foot or by using the excellent public bike system. You won’t find hostels or campsites here—these are proper hotels with private rooms, just priced fairly.
Below is a curated selection of the best cheap hotels in La Rochelle, chosen for their balance of price, location, and guest satisfaction. Each one offers a solid base for exploring the Old Port, the Aquarium, and the nearby Île de Ré without breaking the bank.

I paid online for one night stay and when i arrived i asked for breakfast (wasn’t great) and which was 10 euro, i gave 20 euro note, now this never happened to me before but the receptionist (lady with curly yellow hair) took the time to check if this bill is genuine and this after leaving me waiting for the time she was talking in the phone. The carpet in the room was disgusting. SOMEONE TRIED TO OPEN MY DOOR WHEN I WAS SLEEPING AFTER MIDNIGHT!
Horrible experience

Around 58 euros seems to be the cheapest you can get in La Rochelle at this time of the year... I ended up there because of the train strike, and I got a nice room with comfy bed. It's not modern, but it was spacious enough and clean. Had shower products, hairdryer, etc. The shower is the only negative thing as it's really small (but at least doesn't leave water everywhere like my previous night at the Ibis Budget!). The lady at the front desk was very nice to me too.

Mediocre hotel, but very well situated, close to city centre. Small and outdated rooms, and we stayed there because they accept dogs and have a little park next door where you can walk the dog. Breakfast is French and price/quality is OK. Parking in front is 30 euros per 24 hours, parking hotel is 12 euros until 11 a.m.
Aniss Trafeh★☆☆☆☆
This hotel scasmmed me of 700 euros, they made a mistake and i was not informed of the fact that my room is no longer available, i tried to fix things with them amicably but the lady at the register told me to wait then she fixed her mistake by letting booking know that i havent made my check-in booking sent me a message automatically that my reservation was cancelled and I wont get anything back, when i contacted booking they told me the hotel took all the money and that they dont have it anymore.
Mind you all reading this i am a student who was discriminated against just because of my ethnicity and maybe 700 euros might not seem a lot for a lot of people but for me that money they took without absolutely no service provided to me made me go and find a Airbnb and pay again and it really made my stay financially complicated to this day.
if you are reading this i strongly advise to not book with these people, idk about the owners or the other employees that were nice to me but the woman that handled my reservation finessed me of 700 euros for the Hotel and with a smile on her face.

Essential place to sleep in La Rochelle. Poor structure. Those basic services you expect in a hotel are missing (AC conditioning, breakfast included, small towels, flexible check-in).
Not even close to an hotel, rather more an hostel with premium price.

Very rudimentary. 1, star rating, communal shower cubicle , probably purchased on Temu website? Our room was very cold. This place appears to be run on a 'shoestring' budget.

Clean and tidy, but basic. Not a problem though, as that's what you pay for. There are 6 rooms, 1 shared bathroom and 2 toilets.

The staff are very welcoming and friendly. I especially loved the scent in the room—an incredibly pleasant fragrance—and everything was clean and comfortable. So far, this has been the best room—by all criteria—among the B&B chain locations where I’ve stayed.
Laurence Clary★★★☆☆
I have stayed in a B&B hotel before whilst travelling solo and have always felt very safe. It was the case here. The room was very clean, also an important factor, and not always the case in cheap hotels! Negative points: the lack of sockets in the room made it difficult to dry my hair (none in or near the bathroom) and use my laptop at the desk (only two sockets, both under the bedside tables) . There was a hairdryer provided next to a mirror in the entrance to the room, but not the kind suitable for my hair type, so having more sockets would be good so one can use one’s own hair tools. The big issue though, was that some people decided to start having a very long, very noisy discussion right at the entrance to the hotel in the middle of the night. It went on for ages, woke me up and stopped me from getting back to sleep. I tried to ring reception to tell them but couldn’t get through. I would book again in this hotel as convenient for my work, but only if I could have a room far away from the entrance.
Kristina Bushovska★★★★★
I really liked the scent in the room; everything was clean and comfortable, and there was no «unwanted noise». So far, this has been the best room—by all criteria—among the B&B chain locations where I’ve stayed.

Guess you get what you paid for.
Checked in to find the mattress cover with a huge stain on it. Ok, no big deal. Reported to reception and they gave me another one right away.
Day after, 12.15pm, back to my room after morning meeting to take a shower and then go to an important meeting: no water. Reported to the reception, they said they were cutting water to do some reparations and offered me to take the shower in another room. I pointed out that was not an ideal solution and that it does not make sense cutting water in the middle of the day and without notifying customers. They responded that they assumed that no one is taking shower at that time of the day. Oh well...
Other than the quite terrible service, the room is ok for a short stay, beside the bathroom that has no shower box and you inevitably end up splashing water all over and the terribly uncomfy pillows.
On the bright note: They are very generous with breakfast buffet and location is convenient if you are visiting the university or even the city center (~15 min walk)

Booked a double room with private bathroom and breakfast at €9.50 per person. Room was clean but hardly enough room to move around the bed. Bathroom was so small I had to dry myself outside as I'm 6ft4. Breakfast was very minimal buffet style and not worth anywhere near €9.50. Get your breakfast on a waterside cafe terrace on La Rochelle

Keep in mind this is a very budget friendly option , and in my visit that happened when I was travelling back home , a clean, quiet room to sleep and a shower can work wonders.
Note my evaluation takes into consideration the price quality and other aspects.
The breakfast is quite nice for the price proposed too..

I booked a room online and had a confirmation email, on arrival no booking even with my reservation email. We were booked in and went to our room. It smelt so badly of cigarettes. It had not mentioned online that rooms were smoking or non smoking and the receptionist did not ask either. We asked for another room and were told none were available. The bed cover in the room was disgusting, I know it is a budget hotel but it was covered in burn holes and stains which even if it is budget is not acceptable. We had bedding with us luckily so we used our own bedding rather than using theirs. It is cheap and it is not far from town, but be prepared for a smoky room and dirty covers. We were only staying 1 night so made do.

Typical Ibis Budget Hotel in terms of room size, facilities, cleanliness etc. This one is in good location, 5-10 minutes walk through to the port/tourist areas. Secure parking and some on road free parking in front of the hotel.

Location: South of the old harbor, reachable within a few minutes by car. Parking is available in a spacious and modern underground garage.
Room: Small and very basic in terms of furnishings. The bathroom was tidy, but the plastic seals on the shower door were dirty and should be replaced—same goes for the edges around the bathroom entrance. There’s hardly any space to place toiletries.
Staff: Friendly at check-in and fluent in English.
Parking: Paid parking available in the underground garage. Recommended, as street parking is very limited.
Overall: A hotel with very limited facilities and small rooms. Bathroom hygiene could be improved. If you don’t have high expectations for your overnight stay, this may be a suitable option.

Better look for another hotel.
I stayed here in June 2025 for a few days. Location is convenient, near to the Espace Encan. To the old city it is only 10 to 15 min by foot. It is located on a not-too-busy street.
Hotel needs some renovation. Staff is rather unfriendly. But the real problem is that my colleague and I never received proper invoices. We only received a "provisional invoice" by email after we left. This document is not accepted for travel expenses. What makes it worse is that the amount on it is much less than what we paid. For weeks we are trying to get proper invoices now. The hotel claims that booking.com should provide an invoice, which they don´t do, as they are only intermediary. The staff at the hotel also claims that according to French law they can not provide an invoice which matches what we paid. They explain the significant gap with commission taken by booking.com.
We spent weeks now corresponding with the hotel, ACCOR group and Booking.com. Surprising that ACCOR is not taking better care. Usually it is a good chain and I have stayed hundreds of nights in Accor hotels.
Better stay away and look for another hotel.

I booked it on the same day following very disappointing experience with another host near La Rochelle. Having stayed in Appart'City in La Rochelle was a good choice. This apartment is presented to be very close to the centre and old town. Due to late arrival keys and all information was left in the safe in the reception.
All staff I had pleasure to deal with presented to be able communicate in English, which was a great bonus. Beds were comfortable and the bathroom appeared to be clean. I did not use kitchen block on this occasion but had a breakfast, which appeared to be quite nice.
In overall it appeared to be positive experience and option to stay for one night in La Rochelle.

The room doesn't really feel clean, the bathroom is in a state of disrepair that makes you wonder how it's still functioning, and the refrigerator makes a lot of noise. It seemed cheap, but die to a booking error I had to pay extra... There are better places to stay for the money.

Pros: Location. Room with kitchenette. Not much else
Cons: We stayed three days, paid over 230 Euro for our stay, but it was not enough to get the room cleaned after our second day, or even get a fresh towel. We were told that fresh towel or cleaning costs 20 Euro. Are they mad? Towards the end of our stay, toilet paper, shower gel and soap all run out.
Filthy and disgusting carpets on the corridors in the building as well as in our room. They need to be scrapped and new ones installed.
Bathroom old and mouldy, black spots on shower tiles.
Car park is payable for every night of your stay.
There is no "terrace" or a "garden", it's a lie. All you get is your small room, that's all.
Most disgusting hotel I've been in France so far, have most extensive and intrusive rules. They reserve 250 Euro from your credit card, inspect your passport and payment card. Trying to protect what? Dilapidated building and mouldy carpets? What a joke.

Very impressed with the apartment, lovely to have a microwave, cooker top, kettle, fridge, all cutlery and plates, bowls etc. Room quite spacious with an eating area of 2 chairs and table.Shower room very good. Convenient location near the train station and port in La Rochelle for a short weekend stay. The room was clean, basic but I only needed it for sleeping. I did not rate the breakfast for the price paid, there was a great bakery at the old port close by for a more pleasant breakfast experience.

Arrived at the hotel and the front desk were helpful, we got there late so went straight to bed. We woke up and my wife noticed ants running around our bed. We looked on the floor and they were all in and around our baggage. They were moving along the side of the wall. We got rid as many as we could. We packed up and I told one of the staff and they didn't even apologise, just said ok thank you.
The hotel is in a great location, I know you get what you pay for, we just need to get some sleep before we moved on, but Ants and no apology is terrible.

Location is perfect, 15 min walk into the city center. Room was clean and the swimming pool was great.
2 things that need improving, one is the shower as there is no where to put your things, it needs a small shelf.
Second was the breakfast, very simple.
All things considerd (budget hotel) it was good value for money.

After we left I had contact with reception due to something we left behind by mistake. The service was great and very helpful!.

Great location 10 minute walk from the port (if you can forgive the neighbouring rail crossing & redevelopment works - only noticeable if you are outside/ by the pool)
If you don’t like children probably not for you either as it’s very family friendly.
The rooms are small and basic but that’s all we needed and the beds are comfortable. The air conditioning at night did seem intermittent and never reflected the temperature on the thermostat but don’t know if that was just our room or not.
The hotel is spotlessly clean and well managed. Breakfasts were busy but well stocked. The bar prices were fantastic as was the pool area which made lounging around a much appreciated option.
We were travelling with 4 bikes on the back of the car. We kept these & the carrier in the secure bike store in the neighbouring multi storey car park which we also used. The hotel give you an access card for the store. (Top tip for drivers: it looks closed when you arrive but it is closed for security- the entrance door is on the left too confusing when you have been driving on the right)
In all fantastic value in a great location.
Our only negative feedback would be for the management to firstly replace the horrible plastic mattress protectors which are impossible to sleep on without being in a pool of sweat. The other would be please just hard boil a tray of eggs each morning and get rid of the queues & disagreements over that tiny egg bath!

Title: Extremely disappointing stay – cleanliness and service issues
Ibis Pilboro was a very disappointing experience. Our first room had dirty sheets and not enough towels. When we raised the issue, instead of simply changing the sheets, the staff insisted on moving us to another room.
The second room they gave us smelled strongly of drains, and we even found a cockroach. Despite this, we didn’t want to move again, so we stayed.
Upon leaving, we left behind a pack of cookies, a broken charging cable, a towel over a chair, and messy beds (we were four people in the room). The cleaning staff behaved shockingly: a man came downstairs, called me out in front of my children, and shouted at me for leaving these items. He brought me upstairs, continued to shout for several minutes, and asked if I was “disrespecting him” and “embarrassed.” He was extremely patronising, repeatedly stating in French that in 20 years he had never dealt with anything like this. This treatment was completely uncalled for over trivial items like a pack of cookies, an iPhone cable, and a body cream.
When I spoke to the lady at reception about this, she acted as if she didn’t hear and merely said she was aware the staff member had been upset about the room.
On a positive note, the location is okay if you’re planning to shop in the nearby retail park (B&M, etc.), but it is far from the beach – about a 45-minute bus ride, and Ubers are expensive.
Overall, the rooms were unclean, we found a cockroach, and the staff’s behaviour was shocking. I have never been treated so poorly in a hotel, and I cannot recommend this property.

The hotel is really terrible! The only two positive points are the welcome staff and the fact that the bed was comfortable. Everything about the rooms needs updating, chairs, the desk, the cupboards, the old blankets in the wardrobes and everything in the bathroom. I was prepared to go in with an open mind after reading the poor reviews but this hotel was just awful. The rooms are really dark and the walls are dirty, you can easily hear your neighbours and personally as a woman traveling on her own it just doesn't feel that safe. I had such a bad nights sleep due to the sound of the dripping a/c unit in my room and the man on the telephone next door until 2am.

Terrible! So bad we checked in, saw our room and checked back out again immediately.
Motel is on a busy road junction, so very noisy.
Room was advertised as having a balcony when, in fact, it had a walkway going straight past the door to other rooms either side.
Very basic room.
Tips for Booking a Cheap Hotel in La Rochelle
Finding an affordable room in a popular coastal city requires a bit of strategy. The cheapest rates are rarely available during the peak summer weeks, and La Rochelle’s event calendar can cause sudden price spikes. These practical tips will help you secure the best possible rate without sacrificing comfort or convenience.
Book far in advance for summer and festival dates. The Francofolies music festival in July and the peak August holiday period fill budget hotels months ahead. If you know your dates, reserve a refundable rate as early as possible. Last-minute deals are rare in high season, and you may end up paying double for a room that normally costs €60.
Consider staying near the train station or university district. The area around Gare de La Rochelle and the nearby university buildings is not as picturesque as the Vieux Port, but it is safe, well-connected, and significantly cheaper. You can walk to the harbor in about ten minutes, and you will find more affordable bakeries and cafés for breakfast.
Use the city’s public bike system to widen your search radius. La Rochelle is famously flat and bike-friendly. The Yélo bike-sharing system has stations throughout the city and surrounding communes. If you find a cheap hotel two or three kilometers from the center, a short bike ride makes it entirely practical. This opens up options in neighborhoods like Mireuil or Laleu that tourists often overlook.
Check for parking fees before comparing prices. Many budget hotels in the center do not have private parking, and public underground lots can add €15 to €20 per night. If you are driving, a slightly more expensive hotel on the outskirts with free parking may actually be cheaper overall. Always factor this into your total cost.
Travel in the shoulder season for the best balance. May, June, September, and early October offer mild weather, fewer crowds, and hotel rates that are often 30 to 40 percent lower than July. The city is still fully open, the terraces are lively, and the light on the harbor is arguably more beautiful than in the hazy heat of August.
Look for rooms with breakfast included or skip hotel breakfast entirely. A hotel breakfast in La Rochelle can cost €9 to €12 per person. For that price, you can easily buy fresh pastries, fruit, and coffee at a local boulangerie and eat by the harbor. If a hotel offers a free or heavily discounted breakfast, that adds real value. Otherwise, eat like a local.
Book directly with smaller family-run hotels. While booking platforms are convenient, many independent two-star hotels offer better rates or free upgrades when you contact them directly. A short phone call or email in French or English can sometimes unlock a lower price, a quieter room, or flexible cancellation terms not listed online.
La Rochelle rewards the unhurried traveler. Even if your hotel is simple, the city itself provides the luxury—golden hour walks along the Tour de la Chaîne, impromptu seafood lunches at the Marché Central, and the gentle clinking of masts in the marina. A cheap room simply means more of your budget goes toward experiences rather than a bed you only sleep in.
With a little planning and the right expectations, you can stay in one of France’s most elegant Atlantic ports for far less than you might think. Choose a well-located budget hotel, explore by foot or bike, and let La Rochelle do what it does best: make you feel like you have discovered somewhere truly special.
