15 Things to Do in La Rochelle

La Rochelle is a city that seems to have been designed for wandering. Its historic limestone facades, arched walkways, and the gentle clatter of boat masts in the old port create an atmosphere that feels both timeless and effortlessly vibrant.

Whether you arrive by train or sail into the harbor, the city opens up like a living museum where the Atlantic breeze carries the scent of salt and fresh seafood. The old port, guarded by its iconic twin towers, is the natural starting point for any visit, but the real magic lies in the quiet streets and sun-drenched terraces just beyond the quayside.

This coastal gem on France’s western edge balances a rich maritime history with a lively modern culture. You can spend your morning exploring medieval fortifications, your afternoon cycling along the waterfront, and your evening enjoying oysters as the sun melts into the ocean.

For travelers planning a trip to the Charente-Maritime region, La Rochelle offers an impressive range of experiences that go far beyond the typical French seaside town. From world-class aquariums to hidden market streets, the city rewards curiosity and a relaxed pace.

Because the historic center is largely pedestrianized, it is easy to explore on foot without feeling rushed. Every corner seems to reveal a new café, a centuries-old arcade, or a surprising view of the harbor that begs to be photographed.

If you are wondering how to make the most of your time here, this guide covers the essential attractions and local experiences that define a visit to La Rochelle. Below you will find the best things to do, followed by practical advice for enjoying the city like a local.

Worth it if you enjoy aquariums. Many quite impressive fish on display through a variaty of aquarium. Price not necessarily cheap but also not crazy expensive. We did without audio tour and spent about 1.5h inside with 2 small kids. Max 2h visit for all the aquarium start to finish. Especially the sharks were impressive, and the rain forrest at the end is nice too. We visited in summer vacation and was a bit busy. P.s. Parking at the aquarium is good and also a good starting point for visiting La Rochelle historic city itself after the aquarium!
Diell★★★★★
Super experience! I was only and I enjoyed it! They have also a “class” of research and how do they take care of fishes. There is also an auditorium as a cinema. And the interactive part myth vs reality for sharks mostly, was interesting. And there is an “outdoor” space for tropical atmosphere. I don’t want to be a spoiler, but maybe You might need some information 🤷🏼‍♀️ enjoy! It’s worthy! I have been in other aquariums, but still liked it very much!

A wonderful experience for all ages! There is beautifully designed, with a great variety of marine species and fascinating displays. The atmosphere is immersive and educational, making it a perfect place to discover the beauty of the ocean. And it’s not hot to be here, great place to visit during heatwave

A wonderful experience to witness of a family business that has evolved and grew over many generations. To one of European outstanding collection of over 600 species. A must visit when you vacate at La Rochelle.

Superb park, nobody likes Parks more than I do. Nobody, but it's the best park that I've been to and I've been to a lot of Park and no one knows more about Parks than I do. But I can tell you it's the best. It's only the best and I've met a lot of great Parks but this one just takes the top. It's actually wonderful. Everything is so nice. Everything is so clean and I love it. It just feels like you're in the middle of nature in the middle of nowhere and it's so cool. It's such a cozy little town and everybody should love it as I do

An enchanting park thanks to the combination of the beach and green space, it gave me a special pleasure to visit it today and enjoy the wonderful view. A multitude of tree species, different activities that include the little ones as well as the adults. I will definitely be back for a longer walk.

I have been familiar with this park all of my life. 5 minutes from downtown La Rochelle, the harbor, and the local beach. The shops and restaurants around the corner are great for shopping deals and fresh "Fruits de mer" seafood. Great for morning runs of 4 miles.

Nice city with beautiful buildings. Especially the harbour with its towers are a must see. You can also have a bite in one of the restaurants or little shops for take away.
Marie Holm, PhD★★★★☆
Tranquil port, pleasant to stroll along, replete with restaurants, cafes and shops. Bus stops nearby to head in several directions, and narrow walking streets in from the port lead through arches toward the old town within some minutes. A great area to explore, relax, reflect. Sometimes great entertainment of music and dance takes place outside along here, weather permitting. Stunning panoramic sunsets in a historic spot.

By far the most beautiful place I have been after Paris of course. But I had a good time. You should try the indien restaurants and definitely visit the beach 🤩

Interesting museum. We visited to escape the pouring rain and enjoyed our time. Ticket gets you access to three boats (weather vessel, fishing trawler, and tug) and a couple of indoor exhibits about the history of the harbour. If English speaking they give you a guidebook to carry round with you, but all other information is solely in French. The boats also involve a few tight climbs up steep stepladders so not sure I'd recommend to someone who'd struggle with steps and small spaces.
Carl Hartick★★★★★
Incredible welcome at the reception when I mentioned that I come from Germany. There was a written introduction in German, performed with such joy by the lady in charge — it truly made my day. It reassured me of the French‑German friendship 🇫🇷🤝🇩🇪
Jonathan Williams★★★★★
Friendly staff and very well-presented ships. The meteorological ship was highly informative and beautifully laid out with thoughtful presentations. The history of the port and the ships is well-housed in the dockside pavilions. A must-visit in La Rochelle!
Paul Walsh★★★★☆
Interesting place to visit. Not much information in English, but possible to walk around the France ressearchbship, the tug, and part of the fishing boat. Some interesting displays in part two ( boats, fishing, canning etc.). Collection of dinghy exhibits (actual full size boats, not models!) in part 3.
Sabine Barth★★★★★
We can highly recommend this interesting museum! It's educating and entertaing at the same time. You not only learn a lot about maritime history and the development in La Rochelle, we also visited various ships, inter alia the "France I", an old Meteo-vessel. One of the best museums we've been to.

Historical & Beautiful Building The 'grosse Horloge' is an amazing site. Quite unique. It is not really like the ones you see in Prague or in Venice, this one is really more French & more Medieval. We really liked it, and it is to be noted it probably looks even better at night.

The name says it all. It's a big clock and it's not to be confused with anything else. It's actually very historical and it's great. It's probably the greatest clock I've seen and I've seen a lot of clocks. I know everything about clocks. I've been too many clocks in the world and I've been too many times in the world. Nobody has traveled as much as me. Nobody is as knowledgeable as me about clocks and I can tell you it's the greatest clock

Not as vast as Bordeauxs natural History museum, but still beautiful and aesthetically please to view. Some instructions in English would have elevated my experience but a beautiful, considered collection of animal and cultural displays nevertheless

Lovely cool building I n a very hot day! Amazing range of animals. Not much in english but my kids had a great time anyway (although they are interested in animals)

I visited this museum recently and i really enjoyed it. There was an exposition on attraction which was really interesting. There was so many different areas of history here which I really like as I always have had an interest on history and archaeology. There is also super pretty gardens at the back of the museum that you can wonder through afterwards.
Yeferson Flores★★★★★
Good place with fixed and temporary exposition. Free on the first sunday of the month.
Phillip Spencer★★★★☆
Very interesting museum that reopened partially on 1July 2022. Lots of fascinating displays but for some of the identification of exhibits the signage was very difficult to read. Upper floors were full of diverse cultural artefacts. Major issue was that they are still working on ticketing, which was a painful process as no cash accepted! (Apparently this museum is piloting a cashless payment system for La Rochelle museums: bad idea as it is exclusionary for those who don't have or want smartphones.) The system still needs work too. It took us ten minutes to pay and then, as we couldn't get a data connection on our phone we couldn't show the emailed proof of payment. Frustrating!

Don’t miss the third tower included with the same ticket! In my opinion, it offers the most beautiful views of La Rochelle, especially over the marina filled with hundreds of boats. There are several spectacular windows and viewpoints where you could spend a long time simply admiring the scenery. As an interior and architecture enthusiast, I found this tower especially inspiring—it is easy to imagine living with views like these. There is also a fun interactive treasure hunt throughout the tower. If you have a little extra time, it’s definitely worth trying, especially with children or if you enjoy exploring historical sites in a more playful way.
Diell★★★★★
I visited it during Zero1 Festival and it was a really nice experience with exhibitions from student’s art/technology works.

The Lantern Tower is great to visit but you need to be in god shape as there are 162 steps. Very interesting to learn about the history of the city. The architectural part of the tower is also of interest; you can even visit the inside the highest part if the tower in the sixth floor.

Totally loved La Rochelle. Was just amazing . Arrived on train from surgerewaa only 20minutes. Went through a Grand Station ,easy walk into town 7 minutes walk. The building in la Rochelle are fabulous. As you can see by my photos. Went up one of three towers totally amazing views. Will be going back to la Rochelle as want to stay longer next time.

La Rochelle was our favourite destination from our Northern European Cruise on board MSC. We had delightful weather, basking in the sun. The three towers were the focal points, all standing proudly along the harbour walls. About 10 euro to enter all 3, but they close around lunchtime for 2hrs.

This emblematic landmark reflects the city’s rich maritime heritage. Its neoclassical façade somewhat austere interiors, carry a sense of beauty. Inside, found amazing the small model boats and maritime offerings left by sailors in gratitude for surviving storms or shipwrecks.

I visited St. Louis Cathedral in La Rochelle for the evening 360° immersive show - LUMINISCENCE. It’s a large, historic cathedral, and the whole city feels like stepping back in time. Every narrow street is filled with history and charm.
Brid★★★★★
Recently visited this Cathedral and it was such a lovely experience. The stained windows are very beautiful. The church itself is very beautiful and quite interesting. There were not that many people in there so it was ok to take photos as no one was praying at the time and there was no mass on that time.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We visited the Bunker de La Rochelle during our time in the city and really enjoyed the experience. As someone who is very interested in the Second World War, I found it fascinating and there was plenty to see and learn about throughout the visit. The bunker is incredibly interesting and gives you a real insight into La Rochelle during the war and the German occupation. There is lots of information to read as you make your way around, along with displays, photographs and original items that help bring the history of the bunker and the period to life. We spent around an hour inside, which gave us plenty of time to have a good look around and take in the displays without feeling rushed. It was very informative, and we both came away having learned something from the visit. The only thing I would mention is that it was incredibly hot inside when we visited, so be prepared for that if you are going during warmer weather. It certainly didn't spoil our enjoyment, though. If you have an interest in the Second World War or simply want to discover more about the history of La Rochelle, this is definitely somewhere I would recommend visiting. A fascinating piece of history and a really enjoyable hour. Well worth a visit.
Sophie Adcock★★★★★
This museum is incredible! Walking round an actual German bunker. Good price for entry and we got a booklet to translate everything into English for us too. Highly recommended
Darren Birt★★★★★
Great example of a ww2 bunker, restored as a museum. Was built as a refuge for submariners against the regular allied bombing and included dorms for sailors, communications rooms, single rooms for officers and even a bar! Not too many steps to access so grand as long as you can manage the initial drop. Comprehensive guide book in English available but, tbh, we found it a bit 'wordy' and distracted from the 'feel' of the bunker. Definitely takes you back in time to a more dangerous world.
Michel Bronne★★★☆☆
It's a good experience to go back in time specially we're the bunkbed is and you hear the bombs falling on top off the bunker

Visiting the Musée du Nouveau Monde in La Rochelle was a captivating experience that I highly recommend. The museum, dedicated to the history of the Americas and their connection to France, is housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century mansion. The architecture itself is worth the visit, with its elegant facade and charming courtyard. Inside, the exhibits are thoughtfully curated and provide a rich narrative about the cultural exchanges between France and the Americas. The collection includes artifacts, paintings, and multimedia displays that bring to life the stories of exploration, colonization, and the cultural impact of these interactions. I particularly appreciated the focus on indigenous cultures and their contributions, which are often overlooked in similar institutions. The layout of the museum is user-friendly, making it easy to navigate through the various sections. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, eager to share insights and answer questions, enhancing the overall experience. One of the highlights was the temporary exhibition showcasing contemporary artists and their interpretations of the themes of the museum. It added a modern twist to the historical context and made for a thought-provoking visit. Overall, the Musée du Nouveau Monde is a must-see for anyone interested in history, culture, and art. It offers a unique perspective on the connections between France and the New World, all while being situated in the beautiful city of La Rochelle. I left feeling enriched and inspired and can’t wait to return!

Really interesting museum, with a lot of information. I'm hot sure how much of it is available in English though. Staff is nice. Well worth the visit. It's a pity that it closes over lunch time so you have to rush, better plan well and come right when it opens, either in the morning or in the afternoon.
Suzy★★★★★
Located in a very beautiful mansion, this is possibly the best museum in town. The exhibit depicts the history of the West Indies and the Nouvelle France, focusing on the triangular trade departing from La Rochelle, slavery and the "exotic goods" trade. Beautiful and educational, you'll need about 2 hours to visit the four floors.

It is hands down the greatest animal park in the city that I've seen. It's free and nobody knows more about animals than I do. And I can tell you I've met a lot of animals and it's great there are many animals there. Donkeys ducks geese and everything else you can think about even goats and some sheeps and I can tell you it's the best. It's the greatest Park of animals that I've seen and I really love it and it's a wonderful experience

I could not even imagine how beautiful this park can be. Today I decided to give this place a chance so I took a walk and could hardly leave home. Besides the fairytale landscape, the animals are very beautiful. It can be seen that they are very well cared for, they have enough space to have a good life and I think they have gotten used to the celebrity, they are not at all shy when it comes to pictures. An attraction both for children who have playgrounds, but also for adults

What an absolutely beautiful place to go! I'd planned to walk here on my trip to La Rochelle, but it wasn't a priority, lucky I walked through here in the way to the bus stop back to the airport and I'm so glad I did! It's free to go in, which is crazy for the amount of money they've put in to make it so nice, clean, and to hold the wildlife that they do... horses, cows, goats, rabbits, peacocks, budgys, so many different birds! A really nice place to stroll through or sit and just relax.

These towers guarded the entrance to the port city of La Rochelle. A chain was drawn between them to keep it unwanted ships. This was the port that my 6th great-grandfather boarded a ship bound for New France in the 1640's. The view from the towers to the ocean was amazing.

To protect the harbour at night in times of war, an enormous chain was raised between the two 14th-century stone towers at the harbour entrance to La Rochelle, giving rise to the name Tour de la Chaîne (Chain Tower). There are superb views from the top and an insightful exhibition on French migration to the New World.

Tips for Visiting La Rochelle

A little planning goes a long way in La Rochelle, especially during the busy summer months when the old port fills with visitors from across Europe. The city is compact and walkable, but knowing how to navigate its rhythms will help you avoid crowds and discover the more authentic side of local life. These practical tips are designed to save you time, money, and unnecessary stress while maximizing your enjoyment of this Atlantic coast treasure.

1. Stay within the historic center or near Les Minimes
Choosing accommodation inside the old town means you can walk to nearly every major attraction. If you prefer a quieter setting, the Les Minimes marina area offers modern hotels and easy access to the beach, with a short bike or bus ride into the center.

2. Rent a bicycle for at least one day
La Rochelle is one of the most bike-friendly cities in France, with dedicated lanes that stretch along the coast and into the surrounding countryside. The city’s self-service bike scheme, Yélo, makes it simple to grab a bike for a few hours or a full day, and cycling to the nearby beaches is far more pleasant than driving.

3. Visit the market early in the morning
The covered market near the old port is at its best before 10 a.m., when vendors are fully stocked and the crowds are still thin. Arriving early gives you first pick of local cheeses, fresh oysters, and seasonal produce, and you can chat with vendors without feeling rushed.

4. Book the aquarium tickets online in advance
One of the city’s most popular attractions can have long queues during school holidays and summer weekends. Reserving a time slot online not only saves you waiting in line but also guarantees entry on busy days when tickets sometimes sell out by early afternoon.

5. Explore beyond the old port on foot
While the harbor is beautiful, some of the city’s best cafés, boutiques, and quiet squares are found a few blocks inland. Streets like Rue Saint-Nicolas and the Quartier Saint-Nicolas district reward those willing to wander away from the main tourist thoroughfares.

6. Check the tide schedule if you plan to visit nearby islands
The islands of Ré, Aix, and Oléron are all accessible from La Rochelle, but ferry schedules and some coastal activities depend heavily on the tides. Checking tide times and ferry departures a day in advance helps you plan a smoother island excursion.

La Rochelle has a way of slowing you down in the best possible sense. The city invites you to linger over a coffee on a cobbled square, watch fishing boats unload their catch, or simply sit by the water and watch the light change over the towers. It is a destination that rewards those who leave room in their itinerary for spontaneity.

Whether you spend two days or a full week here, the combination of maritime heritage, excellent food, and relaxed coastal energy makes it one of western France’s most appealing cities. With these tips and attractions in mind, you are well prepared to experience La Rochelle beyond the postcard views and discover why so many travelers return year after year.
