La Rochelle, with its historic Vieux Port guarded by two medieval towers, is one of the most atmospheric cities on the French Atlantic coast. It is a destination that balances maritime heritage with a relaxed, modern lifestyle, making it equally appealing for a weekend escape or a longer family holiday. The city’s limestone arcades, shaded terraces, and vibrant market streets create an immediate sense of place that draws visitors back year after year.
Choosing the right base is essential to enjoying everything this Charente-Maritime gem has to offer. Whether you want to step straight from your hotel onto the quayside for a morning coffee, or prefer a quieter retreat a short stroll from the old town, the range of accommodation is impressively varied. From historic residences to sleek contemporary addresses, La Rochelle knows how to welcome its guests.
Many travellers prioritize proximity to the Vieux Port because it places the city’s main sights within easy walking distance. From there, the Aquarium, the Tour de la Chaîne, and the bustling Cours des Dames are all just minutes away on foot. However, staying slightly outside the immediate harbour area often rewards you with calmer nights, more space, and better value for money.
The city is also a gateway to the Île de Ré, connected by a striking bridge, and to the nearby beaches of Châtelaillon-Plage. This makes it a practical hub for exploring the wider region without moving hotels every night. Good transport links, including a fast TGV connection from Paris, mean the city is accessible for both short city breaks and longer coastal itineraries.
When selecting a hotel, consider what matters most to your travel style. Some properties offer private parking, a rare and valuable asset in the narrow streets of the old centre. Others focus on wellness, rooftop views, or gastronomic dining, giving you the chance to tailor your stay to the rhythm you want.
The following selection of the best hotels in La Rochelle reflects a mix of styles, locations, and budgets, but all share a strong reputation for service and comfort. Use it as a starting point to find the address that best matches the kind of stay you are dreaming of.

Wow what a welcome. Arrived hot and sweaty and the reception wouldn't let me check in until she had served me a cold lemon infusion. Fantastic old historic building. Room bright and airy. lovely courtyard. Right in the old town. Perfect for bikers parked on pavement right outside hotel. (not sure if it could take a group of 10!) Room overlooking bike. newly renovated bathroom was a big plus. Shower fantastic.

The hotel location is fabulous - next to the beautiful Marché Central, only a few minutes from the Vieux Port, but in a quiet street. Our room overlooked the patio. Hotel interiors and the patio were beautifully renovated. We arrived by bike and could use the patio for safe storage. Owners are enthusiastic and easy to talk to. Good breakfast too, so what's not to like? 🙂

A Charming Gem in the Heart of the City
A spontaneous stopover on our way to San Sebastian turned into one of the highlights of our trip, this centrally located hotel delivered far more than we expected.
Our room was compact but impeccably maintained, and the reception staff were genuinely warm and attentive, even surprising us with a delicate bouquet of lily of the valley on Labour Day.
Parking is effortless with a public car park just a 5 minute walk away at only €1 for the entire overnight window (7pm–8am), and at €85 for two, the hotel offers outstanding value for the quality and location.
A wholehearted recommendation for travellers seeking comfort, convenience, and a little unexpected charm.
Public car parking is in the center, 300m from the hotel by walk. Not expensive at all.
From 7pm to 8 am (approx) it’s €1 for the entire duration.
I definitely recommend this hotel.

Lovely welcome, great breakfast, good inexpensive parking nearby, quite quiet and easy walk to La Rochelle sights. Note 2* so rooms comfortable but a little basic and no aircon but a good fan!

Location is fantastic between Place de Verdun and the Old Town Harbour and a few minutes from the best of restaurants so generously recommended by the hotel co-owner Jessica.
We enjoyed a beautiful room with views over the town. Jessica is a wonderful host and nothing was too much trouble....we look forward to our next stay here at Hotel de Paris.

Very good hotel for the price point.
Quiet noisy Street outside so bring are plugs if facing the street.
The air conditioning only goes down to 20° (they claim 19°), so it can be difficult to sleep at night.
The bed also has some covering on it which makes a rattling noise. I assume it's an anti bed wetting mattress protector, but it becomes very sweaty when you are trying to sleep on it.
The room is small but functional and the property is close enough to the centre not to be an inconvenience, so I will happily stay here again because the price benefit outweighs the minor problems.

We stayed just the one night, I thought the staff were very professional as well as kind and always helpful. We found the room to be very clean, like the smell in the corridor as well:-) The breakfast was also very lovely with local produce on hand. We definitely recommend this hotel. Thank you

Aircon and elevators! - unlike many hotels in the area.
Clean and comfortable, with friendly service.
The housekeeping team do an excellent job.
Definitely recommend!

Very nice hotel in centre of historic district- everything nearby including the great Saturday market, good restaurants & nice shops. Clean comfortable rooms. Very good breakfast.
A bit tricky to access by car (need to circle historic area avoiding many closed or one-way streets to drop off luggage and then either use underground park or find street parking) but the night porter was very helpful in directing us.

Upon arrival, expect a peculiar welcome from Mr. Savary, the owner. This man speaks loudly, almost shouting, and likes to interrupt. Be careful when carrying your luggage, as I can't guarantee the elevator will be working. Mr. Savary admitted to us that he deliberately turns it off at certain times of the day, no doubt to save money? In the rooms, the first impression is a pungent odor that lingers throughout the stay. Where does it come from? The toilets? The air conditioning? You'll manage to sleep anyway, but when you wake up, it's breakfast time… If I learned anything, it's that it's best to go early. Stock levels are poorly estimated, and during our stay, a rather large guest caused a complete shortage of bread and croissants by 9:30 a.m. When we went to ask Mr. Savary for more bread, he shouted, "There's none left! It's all gone!" One last thing: during our three nights at the Hotel Savary, we consistently had to ask for soap at reception after our rooms were cleaned. Instead of refilling them, they took it away each time… Why?
Apart from that, the bedding is comfortable and the hotel is well located.

Lovely hotel with many facilities, large comfortable rooms, super friendly helpful professional staff, air conditioned rooms all seem to have been refurbished recently. We didn't take breakfast as we found it too expensive at 20 euros per person, had breakfast by the harbour. Great location with many restaurants close by plus good shopping only a few minutes walk. Highly recommend this fist class hotel.

A wonderful stay in the very centre of La Rochelle. The location is unbeatable, right in the old harbour with magnificent views of the historic towers. Step outside and you’re surrounded by the city’s best restaurants and main attractions. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxed, and the staff are exceptionally friendly. A truly fantastic experience from start to finish — the perfect place to enjoy the spirit of La Rochelle.

The staff are very welcoming and friendly. I especially loved the scent in the room—an incredibly pleasant fragrance—and everything was clean and comfortable. So far, this has been the best room—by all criteria—among the B&B chain locations where I’ve stayed.
Laurence Clary★★★☆☆
I have stayed in a B&B hotel before whilst travelling solo and have always felt very safe. It was the case here. The room was very clean, also an important factor, and not always the case in cheap hotels! Negative points: the lack of sockets in the room made it difficult to dry my hair (none in or near the bathroom) and use my laptop at the desk (only two sockets, both under the bedside tables) . There was a hairdryer provided next to a mirror in the entrance to the room, but not the kind suitable for my hair type, so having more sockets would be good so one can use one’s own hair tools. The big issue though, was that some people decided to start having a very long, very noisy discussion right at the entrance to the hotel in the middle of the night. It went on for ages, woke me up and stopped me from getting back to sleep. I tried to ring reception to tell them but couldn’t get through. I would book again in this hotel as convenient for my work, but only if I could have a room far away from the entrance.
Kristina Bushovska★★★★★
I really liked the scent in the room; everything was clean and comfortable, and there was no «unwanted noise». So far, this has been the best room—by all criteria—among the B&B chain locations where I’ve stayed.

Guess you get what you paid for.
Checked in to find the mattress cover with a huge stain on it. Ok, no big deal. Reported to reception and they gave me another one right away.
Day after, 12.15pm, back to my room after morning meeting to take a shower and then go to an important meeting: no water. Reported to the reception, they said they were cutting water to do some reparations and offered me to take the shower in another room. I pointed out that was not an ideal solution and that it does not make sense cutting water in the middle of the day and without notifying customers. They responded that they assumed that no one is taking shower at that time of the day. Oh well...
Other than the quite terrible service, the room is ok for a short stay, beside the bathroom that has no shower box and you inevitably end up splashing water all over and the terribly uncomfy pillows.
On the bright note: They are very generous with breakfast buffet and location is convenient if you are visiting the university or even the city center (~15 min walk)

A nice enough hotel, well run, good rooms, slightly out of town, no pool, I'd say it was over priced for what it was, we paid €170 per night it wasn't worth that. Parking is extra €20 per day which is taking the piss at those prices.

We spent 10 days at Mon Petit Café. It's a place to remember when staying in or living in La Rochelle. Léa, the owner, and Doudou take excellent care of their customers, both regulars and those just passing through. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and on Friday evenings, you can enjoy some lovely little concerts (3 evenings in 10 days).
The brasserie offers daily specials for €12.50: a great way to eat well at a reasonable price. As for the accommodation, the room was spacious and very clean. Located 100 meters from the market, right in the city center, it's a fantastic place to remember! We'll definitely be back on our next trip.

I'd heard about it. I went on Thursday, November 20th. The sign said "Full." I went in anyway and received a very warm welcome. The owner found me a table. It was the day the Beaujolais Nouveau was released, so there was a set menu. It consisted of a charcuterie platter as a starter, an exceptionally tender beef bourguignon as a main course, a cheese plate, and a modern twist on rum baba. All of this was accompanied by a 25cl bottle of Beaujolais. 25 euros, very reasonable. I don't often drink wine, but this one was excellent. In short, a very good meal. I'll be back to try the other dishes.

This hotel has a number of drawbacks... On arrival, as we were about to drive into the car park, we spotted a man lying on the ground in the garden next to the main entrance; he appeared to be drunk, and another man was rummaging through the bins on the hotel grounds.
From that moment on, we didn’t feel safe in the neighbourhood.
Inside the hotel, the welcome was excellent, and all the information was clearly explained to us.
The room was nice, although there was a bit of dust, but I think that’s due to the type of concrete flooring.
As for the bar, we were also warmly welcomed by the Italian head barman (Alex, if I remember correctly), who was really friendly.
We enjoyed some excellent cocktails, accompanied by a lovely platter of cold cuts and cheeses, beautifully presented.
Overall, everything was fine; thank you to all the staff, but even inside the hotel, you don’t feel safe. On our return from the city centre, once we arrived at the hotel, we had a drink; there was already a bit of commotion in the lobby, and I didn’t immediately understand what was happening.
When we got to our room, we discovered that on our floor, a couple were fighting, punching each other, shouting and shoving. I had to intervene to stop them, but it was to no avail, because when we went back to our room, they started shouting, slapping and hitting each other again.
Unfortunately, we didn’t feel safe in this hotel. Although the service was excellent, as was the welcome, this major negative point has put us off returning to your establishment.
I regret this, as everything else is really worth it.

Run! I’ll never stay in an Accor hotel again if I can help it. The AC in this place barely works and the explanation I got from the front desk is that Accor, “due to global warming”, has limited AC to a low of 26C or 78F. If you are fine walking around the heat and coming back to a hot room, this is the place for you. Unfortunately, we have another stay booked at an Accor further in our trip. What a horrible decision. Go somewhere else, I wish I had.

Super hotel in an excellent location just yards from the historic harbour. Staff are friendly, helpful and professional. Clean and well maintained property. Smashing breakfast buffet too.
Timmy Culligan★★★★☆
Room was too warm. It was 37C when we arrived and we needed to cool the room down.We had air-conditioning but it was useless. Both of us barely slept the first night because of the heat and humidity in the room. Would expect a lot better from a fairly expensive hotel. Breakfast room needs to be decorated or a least some decent seating.

Typical Ibis Budget Hotel in terms of room size, facilities, cleanliness etc. This one is in good location, 5-10 minutes walk through to the port/tourist areas. Secure parking and some on road free parking in front of the hotel.

Location: South of the old harbor, reachable within a few minutes by car. Parking is available in a spacious and modern underground garage.
Room: Small and very basic in terms of furnishings. The bathroom was tidy, but the plastic seals on the shower door were dirty and should be replaced—same goes for the edges around the bathroom entrance. There’s hardly any space to place toiletries.
Staff: Friendly at check-in and fluent in English.
Parking: Paid parking available in the underground garage. Recommended, as street parking is very limited.
Overall: A hotel with very limited facilities and small rooms. Bathroom hygiene could be improved. If you don’t have high expectations for your overnight stay, this may be a suitable option.

Better look for another hotel.
I stayed here in June 2025 for a few days. Location is convenient, near to the Espace Encan. To the old city it is only 10 to 15 min by foot. It is located on a not-too-busy street.
Hotel needs some renovation. Staff is rather unfriendly. But the real problem is that my colleague and I never received proper invoices. We only received a "provisional invoice" by email after we left. This document is not accepted for travel expenses. What makes it worse is that the amount on it is much less than what we paid. For weeks we are trying to get proper invoices now. The hotel claims that booking.com should provide an invoice, which they don´t do, as they are only intermediary. The staff at the hotel also claims that according to French law they can not provide an invoice which matches what we paid. They explain the significant gap with commission taken by booking.com.
We spent weeks now corresponding with the hotel, ACCOR group and Booking.com. Surprising that ACCOR is not taking better care. Usually it is a good chain and I have stayed hundreds of nights in Accor hotels.
Better stay away and look for another hotel.

The reception is sparse but feels clean. Unfortunately, the hallway carpet stinks! Thankfully, once you enter the room, you're greeted with a pleasant looking clean room with hardwood flooring.
Practical Tips for Choosing Your Hotel in La Rochelle
The right hotel can transform a good trip into an unforgettable one, especially in a city where the historic centre is compact but parking and access can be challenging. These practical recommendations will help you avoid common pitfalls and make a decision that suits your travel plans, whether you are arriving by train, car, or bicycle.
- Book parking in advance if you are driving. Many hotels in the old town do not have their own parking, and public car parks fill up quickly in summer. Look for properties that list private or partner parking, and reserve a space when you book your room.
- Consider a room facing the inner courtyard if you are a light sleeper. The Vieux Port and its surrounding streets are lively well into the evening, especially on weekends. Courtyard rooms typically offer a quieter night while keeping you in the heart of the action.
- Check the walking distance to the Vieux Port rather than relying on the hotel’s postcode. Some addresses on the outskirts of the centre are described as central but require a 20-minute walk. A quick map check will set realistic expectations for sightseeing.
- Travelling with children? Prioritize family rooms and proximity to the Aquarium. La Rochelle is very walkable, but small legs tire quickly. Staying within a short walk of the Aquarium and the parks near the harbour reduces the need for constant transport.
- Look for hotels with flexible breakfast options. The city has excellent bakeries and markets, so a hotel without breakfast is not a problem. However, if breakfast is included, check whether it features local products such as Charentais butter, regional cheeses, and fresh seafood.
- Visit outside July and August for the best balance of price and atmosphere. Spring and early autumn offer mild weather, fewer crowds, and more availability in the city’s most sought-after hotels. You will also find restaurant reservations easier to secure.
La Rochelle is a city that rewards slow travel and curiosity. Even if you arrive with a packed itinerary, leave room for unplanned moments: a sunset walk along the harbour, a spontaneous oyster tasting at the market, or a detour through the covered passages of the old town.
Ultimately, the best hotel is the one that lets you experience the city on your own terms. Whether you choose a grand historic residence facing the water or a discreet boutique hideaway behind a stone façade, your time in La Rochelle will be shaped by the simple pleasure of being close to the sea, the stone, and the light of the Atlantic coast.
