12 Best Restaurants Near Plaza de España

Sitting at the heart of Madrid, Plaza de España is more than just a bustling transport hub and a gateway to Gran Vía; it is a cultural crossroads. Recently renovated into a pedestrian-friendly oasis with green spaces and historical monuments, the square attracts millions of visitors annually. While the views of the Torre de Madrid and the Edificio España are captivating, the surrounding streets hide a culinary landscape that is equally impressive.

However, dining so close to a major tourist attraction comes with a specific challenge: avoiding the overpriced, mediocre "tourist traps" that plague many European capitals. The side streets branching off the plaza are filled with menus featuring paella pictures and paella that has been sitting under a heat lamp for hours. To eat well here, you need to know exactly where to look and where the locals go.

The good news is that the area surrounding Plaza de España is undergoing a gastronomic renaissance. From historic taverns that have served vermouth for over a century to modern, avant-garde tasting menus, the neighborhood offers a diverse range of experiences. Whether you are looking for a quick bite before exploring the Royal Palace or a sit-down dinner after shopping on Gran Vía, there is something to satisfy every palate and budget.

This guide cuts through the noise to bring you the highest quality dining options within a short walk of the plaza. We have prioritized establishments that use fresh, local ingredients, offer authentic hospitality, and provide genuine value. You will find everything from traditional Castilian stews and Asturian cider houses to innovative fusion and some of the best seafood in the city.

We understand that "near" can mean different things to different travelers. For this list, we have focused on restaurants located within a 10 to 15-minute walk of the plaza’s center. This radius covers the vibrant neighborhoods of Argüelles, Malasaña, and the edges of the historic Austrias district, allowing you to combine your meal with a pleasant stroll.

To compile this list, we have dined anonymously, cross-referenced local reviews, and considered consistency over time. We looked for places that maintain high standards regardless of the tourist season. You can trust that these recommendations are based on current quality, service, and atmosphere, not just historical reputation.

Below is our curated selection of the best places to eat near Plaza de España, followed by essential tips for navigating the local dining scene.

The meals were quite good, the appearance of the restaurant dining room too. The service was worse. A young waiter was squeezing a pimple in the mirror in the main room. The pressure to eat the main meal quickly, and this was manifested, among other things, by the waiter asking if we had finished while we were still eating. The fries were taken away from us practically while we were eating.

Botania: A Lush Oasis in Plaza de España The Vibe: A stunning, plant-filled "greenhouse" interior that is easily one of the most beautiful dining spaces in Madrid. The Food: Focused on fresh, seasonal ingredients. Don't miss the grilled artichokes. It’s a trendy spot that gets busy; book in advance to secure a table. Great for those wanting high-quality Mediterranean fusion in a prime, central location.

All the dishes were too salty and very heavy. The meat was too expensive and not very good. The restaurant is beautiful, but the food was not worth the price; it was too expensive for what it is. Furthermore, they charged us for the bread twice, and we neither ordered nor ate it. Based on this experience, we will not be returning.

Beautiful restaurant in Madrid city centre. The decoration gives a nice ambience coupled with the selection of dishes that can suit different people’s tastes. I brought people from different nationalities and they were all happy with their food. Great value for money!

Had the Caesar salad and diavolo pizza - which I did half-half with a friend, and a jug of Sangria. It was super yum and super fun. I recommend doing that. The toilet was right next to the kitchen and looked like an airplane toilet. It smelled like urine. I was not a fan - was expecting something fancy.

Lamucca del Carmen is located in a beautiful spot right in the plaza — the location is definitely one of its strong points. The outdoor seating area is lovely, especially on a nice day, and the interior is just as charming, with tasteful decor and a cozy atmosphere. Our experience with the staff was mixed. The receptionist who greeted us at the entrance came across a bit cold and gave us a slight attitude, which wasn’t the warmest welcome. On the other hand, our waitress was very friendly and sweet, which definitely made up for it during the meal. As for the food, it was a bit underwhelming based on what we ordered. The salmon dish I had was quite disappointing — it lacked flavor and had a strong fishy taste that made it hard to enjoy. We also ordered a salad and a pasta dish, which were acceptable, but nothing particularly memorable. Overall, the restaurant is a great place in terms of ambiance and location, and perhaps other menu items might be better. But based on our choices, the food didn’t quite meet expectations.

Great food. Great staff. Friendly and according to one of our party, the best burger 🍔 had ever! Thanks for a great evening.

The ham croquettes were very nicely done. But, that is where the good experience ends. First, the waitress seemed to take offense to me immediately. No idea why. Ordered a the house recommended burger ,: medium. It came out barely rare and with the guancole cold. Not that it wasn't hot, it had obviously been pulled from the walk in. Upon mentioning this she takes it away, no apology and brings it back within a minute. The ham had been in the microwave for 15 seconds or on the planchette for the same. Never came back to check. The attitude and the poor performance is a strong no to Lamucca.

We had a pleasant dining experience. La Ibérica pizza is quite good, and the burrata is amazing, definitely a highlight. We sat outside, and it was quite good and pleasant. The location is good. The staff are friendly and attentive, making us feel welcome and well-cared.

We had a fantastic experience here and would absolutely come back! The paella is delicious—perfectly cooked rice with rich, authentic flavor. The chicken skewer is really juicy and tender, one of the best we’ve had. On top of the great food, the service was excellent. Kamar was warm, attentive, and made the whole meal even more enjoyable. Highly recommend this place! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We ordered the patatas bravas and paella. Everything was very flavourful and delicious. The staff were very accommodating and went the extra mile for us. The restaurant has great ambience inside. A local from a different eatery recommended this place and we happen to even bump into him here.

Amazing food! We had the patas bravas, Spanish salad, risotto, duck hot dog, sangria, and the grilled pork sirloin steak with whiskey sauce. Everything was fantastic but the duck and the risotto took the #1 spot. Overall we were very impressed!

We thought the food was just alright, but that’s maybe because we didn’t order the signature dishes. We had the chicken wings, salmon and potato bravas. Service was fast and we got a table quickly around 6pm.

We were actually on our way to Granada and had only planned to make a short one-hour stop in Seville. However, the city was so beautiful, vibrant, and charming that we ended up staying for almost four hours. Since we had not planned where to eat, I did a quick search online and discovered that this bar was one of the most popular and well-known places in the area.😍 We arrived about 30–40 minutes before closing time. It was easy to find, in a great location, and since it was near the end of service, it was not too crowded and we were able to get a table immediately. Now, the most important part: the food!😋😋🤩🥰😎 Honestly, these were the best croquettes I had during my entire trip to Spain. I had eaten in Granada, Toledo, and other cities, but the croquettes here were truly outstanding. We also tried Jamón Ibérico, which was delicious and of excellent quality. Even the olives were different from what we usually find—large, flavorful, and absolutely delicious.🤩🥰😎😋😋😋 The only dish my husband did not particularly enjoy was the omelette. Other than that, everything we ordered was excellent. What impressed us the most was the service. The staff were attentive, regularly checked on us, made sure we had everything we needed, and the food arrived quickly. Their friendliness and professionalism made a big difference. In total, we spent around €50 for two people. While it wasn't the cheapest meal of our trip, it was absolutely worth it considering the quality of the food and the overall experience. In fact, this was our last stop before leaving Seville, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. It left us with a wonderful memory and a perfect ending to our time in the city. If you're looking for delicious food, excellent service, and an authentic local experience in Seville, I highly recommend this place.🥰🤩

The food here was amazing, particularly the spinach and chickpea dish -the Garbanzella was the absolute highlight of the meal. The Salmón Ibérico was a little bit on the dry side, but still tasted good. As for the vibe, the atmosphere is incredibly traditional and nice, and the service is completely spot on. It is definitely on the pricier side compared to other local tapas spots in the area, but the excellent food and traditional setting make it well worth visiting for a night out.

The first tapas bar in the world, established in 1670. Great food, really friendly and helpful service which makes you feel at home immediately. The vintage interior, the iberian jamon hanging from the ceiling and then being cut in front of you, the (surprisingly low) bill written on the table with chalk - really makes the experience one of a kind. A true must-go in Seville.
Shirin M★★★★★
e made a reservation in advance to make sure we got a table. The waiters were super nice and friendly, and they actually helped us choose what to order. They also had a few daily specials that we couldn’t resist trying. We ordered the oxtail as well, and it was absolutely amazing. Definitely recommend this place, and I strongly recommend making a reservation. Otherwise, you’ll likely have to wait in a long line to get a table.
Tj Gross★★★★★
I gave this establishment 5 stars purley for the history. This establishment is the oldest pub in Seville dating back to 1670. The history and stories this place has is unimaginable. The food and wait staff are great the servers operate the place as if it is their own. DefInetly try the pork in whiskey sauce. There are No chairs so expect to stand for your entire stay. Take in the atmosphere that centuries ago sailors and royalty would drink and eat at this little shop.

Cut to the chase, good food, fresh, flavorful, nicely prepared, nicely presented. We had the spinach and casserole, the flavors were unique and quite nice. The decor is casual, elegant, and comfortable. Service was friendly, would not hesitate to go there again. Recommended.

We had a great experience here. The Leidy serving us was very warm and friendly. Our orders arrived quickly, and everything was well organized. We ordered 4–5 different tapas, and even though they were tapas, the portions were quite generous. The chickpeas with spinach dish was especially delicious. Highly recommended!

I had such an amazing experience at la Gorda De Las Zetas. I prefer to eat a pescatarian menu, so finding a wide variety of vegetarian and fish dishes is always a challenge. But my awesome server, Lady, took care of me. I thoroughly enjoyed every plate. Prices were very reasonable, and I recommend the dogfish, gratiné cod, and the salmon with vegetables. Enjoy!

Our favorite restaurant in Seville was La Bartola. Delicious tapas, great sangria for less than 3 Euros and very friendly servers. We are still dreaming about the Iberian pork cheek stew over potato purée, the caponata, croquettes and homemade desserts. We ate there 3 times during our visit it is that good!

Really tasty food here! We ordered a few tapas and everything was great, especially the baby squid, swordfish roll, pig cheek, and beef. Service was fast for the first round, but a bit slower on the second. The place has a great vibe, very lively at night and can get busy. Prices are very reasonable. Overall, a great dinner spot.

We were there last Thursday for dinner and we weren't disappointed. We've eaten a meal without paying a lot of money and the atmosphere was quite nice due to the smilling staff. We've really enjoyed the food. Everything was simply amazing so - in my opinion - you should visit "La Bartola" and you won't regret for no doubt! 🤩

The best food I had in all of Seville.. stopped by this place for late dinner during my recent trip to Seville and this place did not disappoint. We ordered their roasted lamb with cous cous, garlic shrimp croquetta (that was the croquetta of the day), pork cheek stew with potato purée and the chocolate panna cotta for dessert. We also ordered their sangria and tinto de verano. Every dish we ordered was AMAZING - tasty flavorful well seasoned melt in your mouth meat bursting with flavors. We devoured every bite and it was hard to pick a favorite. Both the lamb and pork dishes were 11/10. Not just the taste but the presentation of every tapa was fantastic. Their drinks were also great. The dessert was to die for. This place is super packed during peak dinner hours and there is barely any room to stand. Since we walked in around 11pm, we got a seat and were well taken care of all thru the night. Also noticed alot of veggie options on the menu which was great. Service was awesome ambience is chic. I am certain I am going to crave their tapas once I am back home. Highly highly recommend this place when in Seville.

We tried several things, the anchovies, cheese, sushi verdura, stuffed zucchini, tataki de salmon, thai red rice as well as eggplant salad. The thai red rice was our least favourite but everything else was delicious. There is always a line up here around dinner time but the staff are amazing and get the line moving quickly. We were impressed with our server as she was gracefully attending to a dozen tables and didn't forget any of our requests.

3.25/5 I might have had the best frozen strawberry daiquiri of my life here. It was icy and sweet, perfect for the Seville heat. The garlic prawn casserole we had as a starter was so delicious, that oily sauce they were in was divine and went perfectly with a piece of bread. Unfortunately, these were the highlights of our evening and everything else following was pretty average. I had the pork tenderloin, which didn’t taste very tender at all, with about 6 chips. We also tried the fried hake which was overcooked, dry and lacking and flavour. For dessert, I had the chocolate coulant/fondant and was immediately disappointed to find it was also overcooked. The chocolate did not pour out of the middle but it did make for a rich moist chocolate sponge. The service also steadily declined during our time at La Malvaloca, to the point where we were having to flag people down if we wanted any attention. For the price, I would’ve hoped for a better experience.

What a wonderful evening. The food was amazing. We had two burgers for teenagers. They rated it top on their list. I had the cod ravioli and my husband had the Iberian Pork. Great food, extremely good service. Thank you to Kamar and to Juan for looking after us

We had such a wonderful lunch at this restaurant! The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered the dry-aged steak and eggplant, and both were outstanding. The steak was rich and flavorful, and the eggplant was perfectly cooked. What really stood out was the service. The staff spoke English well, were incredibly friendly (BIG shout out for Salomon and Kaman!) and you could tell they genuinely enjoyed their work. They were attentive and thoughtful throughout our meal, which made the whole experience even better. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for great food and warm, welcoming service. We had a truly enjoyable lunch! 🥳

I got hungry around 6:00 PM and this is one of the few places that was actually still serving food at that time. The wine was amazing, and I had the pork risotto, which was very tasty. The service was great too. I was able to sit outside and enjoy the shade and the live music. Everything was amazing. It is a little bit on the pricey side, but it definitely saved my stomach at 6:00 PM in the afternoon.

Nice spot on the square almost directly below Setas de Sevilla, nice spot to watch Setas during sunset and in the dark changing colours. It gets quite busy in the evening so if you want a table outside you might wait for some time. Food is good, staff are lovely.

Late post: This restaurant serves more than cuisine. The entire rooftop houses excellent ambiance, with scenic views of Madrid on all sides, with amazing featured art (many sculptures and wall installations), the hotel pool and rooftop gardens. There was so much to see we almost missed our table reservation. The cuisine was fresh and flavorful with presentation to match.

Roberto was an outstanding server. He was constantly checking up on us and making sure our food was good. When one of our steaks wasn't well done (we had asked for it) he did not hesitate to help us right away. He was the highlight of our evening being extremely caring and fun. The food was absolutely incredible. I had their sirloin steak with mashed potatoes, which was one of the best I've had. I also had a cup of champagne. I would come back.

3.5/3.75. very difficult to rate, food was SUPERB and very delicious, got a little plate of a few appetisers. The buzz was great, we were hoping to eventually go outside to the terrace but seemed too busy and lots of people waiting to move outside, we were going to ask but our server who was very friendly originally, began to neglect us. We asked for dessert menu and were waiting 20-40 mins to order after being given menu and had to stop another staff member to order, who then grabbed another waiter as ours seemed preoccupied with people who had arrived after us. We had been there 2.5 hours between waiting etc so we gave up trying to ask about going outside after dessert and join the queue of restaurant eaters waiting and be at the establishment even longer waiting to get outside, order drinks and wait another long turnover again. There was an angsty tense air between busy waiters and people waiting to be brought outside for a table. Very beautiful food and good buzz but probably wouldn’t recommend to tourists as that may have affected our service as when we thanked and said goodbye on way out to our original waiter, they didn’t even look at us again unfortunately. Beautiful views but want to make sure there early for terrace viewing area and for spot at a table. We booked dinner before and would recommend doing so.
Olga Solodka★☆☆☆☆
All would be ok if not for the worst service from a waiter Andrea, rude and very disrespectful, from the moment we entered she was speaking bad with my friend and we felt not welcomed at all, they make you pay in the entrance so basically you feel like to spend money already so we ordered drink but if we wouldn’t pay definitely would not stay. The view is amazing same for the interiors design. You should definitely hire better people who like people.

We visited La Escalona for dinner while in Seville and absolutely loved it. We definitely over-ordered, but everything we had was delicious and presented beautifully. Our waiter, Zacharias (?), was attentive and friendly, which made the experience even better. The food was excellent — my favourite was the gambas al ajillo, and the olives were possibly the best I’ve ever had. Would highly recommend if you’re visiting Seville.
Adriel John★★★☆☆
La Escalona started off as a promising dining experience with a great atmosphere and strong first impressions. The initial service was attentive, and the first few tapas we received were enjoyable and well-prepared. Unfortunately, the experience quickly declined as the restaurant became overwhelmed by 3 back-to-back food tours. As visitors coming from another country, we were excited to enjoy a memorable meal, but it quickly felt like we were overlooked. We were left waiting for an extended period, and two of the tapas we ordered never arrived.. When our waiter finally returned, the situation became even more confusing. He told us that we hadn’t ordered the last two dishes, despite us clearly remembering placing the order. This created a frustrating and awkward moment, and the overall experience felt disorganized and poorly managed. While the food we did receive was good, the lack of attention, confusion with our order, and overall disorganization took away from what should have been a great experience. In addition, it also took a while to pay while the waiter was too busy attending the food tours.

The waiters were incredibly kind and attentive, creating a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The ambiance was pleasant and comfortable, making it a great place to sit and enjoy a meal. The food was excellent, full of flavor, and served in very generous portions. Everything was spot on and absolutely worth recommending. The four of us ate more than enough and were completely full for 90€, which felt fair for the quality and quantity we received.

We had tapas consisting of shrimp, calamari, fish, chicken liver, cod, olives and goat cheese. We drank sangria. For dessert, we had cheesecake and an almond dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious. The service was very fast, and there was no need to wait in line. The atmosphere was beautiful. It was a fantastic Michelin restaurant. I could have dinner there every single day.

Great experience! Our expectations were quite high as we had researched the place beforehand and it really aligned with what we look for (and it did not disappoint). What really stands out is the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Everything feels thoughtfully prepared, balanced, and genuine. The presentation of the dishes is also beautiful, yet unpretentious. Everything is gluten and refined sugar-free, and there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, making the menu very inclusive and suitable for different dietary preferences. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, and the staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. We actually ended up coming here twice during our 4-day stay in Seville, as this was the only place that truly delivered on clean eating without compromising on taste or variety. We made a reservation on both occasions, which is worth doing as it can get busy. I would definitely recommend Atávico to anyone visiting Seville who is looking for fresh, balanced, high-quality food with options for everyone. Keep up the great work! We will definitely be back. 🙂

Delicious meal, we had the Nonna's meat roll, Tacos Artesanos and Burrata Sorpresa. Each dish unique and fresh. Our server Rosa was very attentive even moving our table to accommodate our bags 😊 would recommend 💯

I went here in September 2025 and stayed round the corner at Meliá Sevilla. Do you know how mad I am that this was a 2 minute walk away and I only discovered it on the last day of a whole week in Seville? You can genuinely taste that every element has been carefully thought through. The flavours were hitting. As a plant based, gluten free diner I was a bit sceptical about what I ordered, Garlic Mushrooms over Alboronía purée. It was so good I actually tried to recreate it when I got home… failed miserably. The person I was with had the salmon marinated in coffee and said it was the best salmon dish of the trip, and she had salmon four times that week, so that says a lot. For dessert, she had the Tropical Volcano and I had the vegan cheesecake, which we loved. I’m still thinking about that mushroom dish 8 months later.

Manuel is excellent! While visiting Seville we ate at this restaurant several times. The menu offers great options for all dietary needs. Our group had a vegetarian, pescatarian and one with a nightshade allergy, and we were all able to find something tasty each time. Large menu, great service, comfy setting!

That seafood (ceviche Mediterranean) dish tastes pure. Well, the dessert sauce is a little sour. It needs to be eaten with sauce. It tastes better. Well, that Tacos (beef-stuffed) cake has a strong but favorable taste. Well, as a Chinese diner, I think it is very close to the taste of Chinese food. Well, the beer is moderate and always delicious. The whole meal feels very good. Well, the people who work in the restaurant work very hard. Well, they provide very warm service and detailed instructions. The whole process makes people feel very considerate and warm. Thanks for Enrique’s warm-hearted service.

Tips for Dining Near Plaza de España

Navigating the dining scene in Madrid requires a slight adjustment to the typical tourist schedule, but mastering these local customs will dramatically improve your experience. The area around the plaza operates on a rhythm that prioritizes late lunches, casual bar snacks, and social dining. By understanding the timing, etiquette, and menu language, you can eat like a local and avoid the common pitfalls that lead to disappointing meals. Here are the essential strategies to ensure you eat well during your visit.

1. Adjust Your Meal Times
Spaniards eat much later than most international visitors. Lunch (la comida) is the main meal of the day and usually begins around 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM, while dinner (la cena) rarely starts before 9:00 PM. If you arrive at a restaurant at 6:00 PM looking for dinner, you will likely find the kitchen closed or limited to cold snacks. Use the "off" hours to enjoy tapas or a drink at a bar, and save the full restaurant experience for the local peak times.

2. Look for the "Menú del Día"
For the best value in the city, look for the fixed-price lunch menu offered on weekdays. The "Menú del Día" typically includes a first course, a main course, a dessert or coffee, and a drink (often wine or beer) for a very reasonable price. This is how locals eat well without spending a fortune, and it is the best way to sample traditional home-style cooking near the plaza.

3. Don’t Judge a Bar by Its Floor
Many of the best tapas experiences near Plaza de España happen in traditional bars where the floor is littered with napkins and toothpicks. This is not a sign of poor hygiene; it is a sign of a busy, thriving establishment where people are enjoying themselves. Relax, order a caña (small beer) or a vermouth, and embrace the lively, standing-room-only atmosphere.

4. Be Wary of "Paella Every Day" Signs
Authentic paella is a regional dish from Valencia, and in Madrid, it is typically reserved for Thursdays or special family lunches. Restaurants that advertise paella every single day with bright, colorful photos are almost certainly serving frozen or pre-made tourist food. If you want to try paella in Madrid, ask a local where to find "arroz" (rice dishes) or wait for a restaurant known specifically for this specialty, rather than settling for a sun-lamp dried version.

5. Reserve Ahead for Dinner
While you can often walk into a tapas bar for a quick bite, securing a table at the top sit-down restaurants requires planning. Many of the popular spots fill up quickly with locals, especially on weekends. Use a translation app to call ahead or check if the restaurant accepts reservations via their website or social media. This is particularly important if you are dining with a group of more than two people.

6. Understand the Tipping Culture
Tipping in Spain is entirely voluntary and much more modest than in North America. Leaving a few coins (5-10% of the bill) on the table or saying "quédese con el cambio" (keep the change) is standard for good service. You are not expected to leave 20%, and doing so can sometimes be seen as ostentatious, though it is always appreciated by the staff.

Exploring the culinary scene around Plaza de España is an essential part of understanding Madrid’s culture. The contrast between the modern, green square and the historic, wood-paneled taverns just steps away offers a travel experience that engages all the senses. Taking the time to sit down for a proper meal or lingering over a vermouth and a tapa allows you to slow down and observe the rhythm of the city.

Whether you choose a Michelin-starred tasting menu or a simple plate of fried eggs with potatoes at a century-old counter, the goal is to eat with intention. By stepping just a few blocks away from the main tourist thoroughfare and using the tips above, you will not only save money but also discover the authentic flavors that make Madrid one of the best food cities in the world.
