12 Best Restaurants in La Laguna, Tenerife

La Laguna is a city that feels different from the rest of Tenerife. While the southern coast is known for its beaches and resorts, this northern gem draws visitors with its colonial architecture, university atmosphere, and a food scene rooted in Canarian tradition. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its cobbled streets and pastel-colored mansions provide a stunning backdrop for a meal, but it is the quality of the local produce and the pride of the chefs that keep people coming back.

Because La Laguna sits in the fertile Aguere Valley, it is surrounded by farms and vineyards that supply the city’s kitchens daily. This proximity to the land means menus change with the seasons, featuring ingredients like watercress, local cheeses, and the famous papas antiguas. Whether you are looking for a quick bite between sightseeing or a long, leisurely dinner, the city offers a depth of flavor that goes far beyond typical tourist fare.

The dining landscape here is a mix of traditional guachinches, modern tapas bars, and innovative fine dining. You can find a rustic spoon dish in a historic building one moment and a contemporary tasting menu in a minimalist space the next. The common thread is a respect for raw materials, from the black pigs raised on the island to the fish landed daily on the northern coast.

Navigating this culinary scene can be overwhelming, especially when you are surrounded by so many inviting terraces and narrow alleyways filled with the smell of garlic and mojo. That is why we have curated a list of the best places to eat, ensuring you spend less time guessing and more time enjoying the local culture. These selections are based on consistency, local reputation, and the quality of the ingredients.

In this guide, we focus on restaurants that offer an authentic taste of Tenerife. While some have a modern twist, they all remain deeply connected to the island’s gastronomic identity. You will find options for every budget, from simple, hearty lunches to elegant dinners worth dressing up for.

To make your culinary exploration easier, we have organized the recommendations by the type of experience they offer. Whether you want the best grilled meat, the freshest seafood, or a vegetarian-friendly menu that doesn’t compromise on flavor, La Laguna has a table waiting for you. Each spot below has been chosen for its ability to deliver a memorable meal.

Let’s dive into the flavors that make this city a true foodie destination in the Canary Islands. After the list, we will also share some essential dining tips to help you eat like a local and avoid common tourist mistakes.

My mother, my mothers partner and I had the best meal of our whole holiday here and truth be told it was one of my favourite meals I have ever had with my Mom on holiday. The food was delicious - interesting - creative - the display was like something out of mitchellen star restaurant. So impressive - the atmosphere is so authentic you really feel like you are in a traditional Canary village. We only wish our Spanish was better to truly understand all the menu and specials so I reccomend using google translate to make sure you dont miss anything. My mothers partner was so enamoured by the place he started joking that he was going to move to the town and sell his own house. GRACIAS FOR SUCH A SPECIAL EXPERIENCE!!!

Wow,wow, wow a gem in Old-town Santa Cruz. An authentic Northern Tenerife cuisine at its finest. Good:5-Spectacular home made Northern Tenerife cuisine. Every dish we had was unique and memorable. The croquettes are some of the best we have ever had in Spain πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ. The inside squid croquettes are just creative and wonderful. The pork cheeks in olive oil was a wonderful start to our main course. The beef cheeks stew on a bed of mash potatoes was what your mother would make for you. A wonderful combination of home cooked with an amazing wine sauce was just pure heaven. The steak was also really well prepared and the simplicity was the best part. The other two dishes were equally tasty. Atmosphere:5-Just the perfect setting that looks like an old home or farm house. The inside is charming and traditional, love it. Service:5-we had no restrictions but they still found space on a busy Mother’s Day evening. If we come back to Tenerife La Abadia would be a must.

Everything was delicious. The service was friendly. They speak French and English too. Our favorite restaurant so far in Tenerife and we would come back if we stayed longer. I recommend the croquettes for starters. It's probably best to make a reservation in advance.

The food 5/5 tender, full of taste and exactly done as should. We had the salmon with potatoes and beef cheeks in red wine sauce bedded in mashed potatoes. The service was great, the place looks adorable. This place made me do my second review in 5 years haha. Earned!

Fantastic local food with minimal tourist invasion, served by friendly staff. Food was exceptionally good, with quick service and friendly atmosphere. Location is central, surrounded by local attractions, yet this place remained relatively peaceful. The only downside is that the floor could have been more often cleaned (it could be the result of the rush hour)

We were looking for local place to eat mid day, and we found this interesting place. they offer classic Canary islands dishes, and a very cosy environment. We had an excellent octopus and tuna with local potatoes, juices, and a kid menu (which includes icecream). Menu is quite big, you will easily find something for yourself. Knowing Spanish helps, although we had no issues aligning on basic English.

Terrible place, won’t recommendπŸ˜” The spanish omelette was terrible and i couldn’t even bring myself to eat it, it had a greasy and very intense taste that was simply disgusting. I don’t know maybe it’s just not for me but still. Rest of the food was kinda flavourless but okay. Also the order they bring food is bad because one of us was eating while other one was waiting and then when the other one got their food the other person was already done eating. I wouldn’t recommend this place😐

I had to wait at the bar until a table was free but it was a good decision. Food was delicious, many typical dishes and good vibes. Waiters are so kind and they recommended us to take half portions because we ordered several dishes. Prices were fair for the quality we got. Totally recommend it.

Ecxellent authentic canarian food and wine. Great and friendly competent service. Very good value for money. Highly recommend. We ordered the Jamon Iberico belotta, confit asparagus and the pork shank (Codillo de cerdo on salsa) - it was huge and for at least 4 people I would say.

I purely found this spot by luck since it was close to my accommodation in La Laguna and was looking for a place to grab lunch! Definitely one of the best culinary experiences one can ask for. The service was friendly, the presentation of the dishes was flawless, and the flavor cannot be described in words. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Tenerife!

According to the reviews β€” and my own experience β€” this is by far the best restaurant in La Laguna, and maybe even on all of Tenerife. It’s a small and intimate place, so without a reservation you might only get lucky with a seat at the bar. The interior is charming, with wine bottles lining the ceiling, and the service is warm, personal, and delivered with a smile and a wink. Dining at Tasca Faracho was an absolute pleasure from start to finish.

Definitely worth all the five star reviews. This is a fantastic, charming and relaxed restaurant serving fabulous, authentic Spanish food, bit elevated and usually with a twist. We had tried to walk in on the Wednesday but it was fully booked but fortunately got in on the Thursday for dinner. the waiter (Ivan?) was super efficient and very friendly and the food (including the bread and special house butter with truffle) was spectacular. by far the best food we ate in La Laguna. Very reasonably priced with great local wine: we would definitely highly recommend and would return in a flash.

This restaurant is a hidden gem! It’s on a quiet street without a terrace, but customers flocked to the restaurant immediately after it opened. Not only the foods on the menu but the homemade bread and butter, which changes flavor every week, are also delicious! I went alone, but I enjoyed talking with the waiter. He was so caring and nice!

The food was very good, however, the service… As we got there, by the door they put a rope barrier, while inside there were plenty of free tables, which felt a bit weird. We entered and walked all the way to the end of the restaurant to ask if we could have dinner (it was about 21:30). There was one waiter and the two chefs in the open kitchen looking at us like it was an inconvenience that we showed up, very unwelcoming and rude, didn’t even say hi until we asked. We sat down regardless but it just felt so weird. After that, another waiter showed up, he was okay. Again, it was 21:30 and the place was not about to close, maybe they were tired and it was a Sunday evening but it just felt very uncomfortable. Of note, while we were having dinner, other people showed up and sat down for dinner too. Gutted we had that experience because the food was unreal!

The food was okay, but the service was absolutely terrible. When we arrived, the doors were literally closed and we couldn’t even get inside. Even though there were plenty of empty tables, one of the staff members told us to wait 20 minutes just so they could prepare a table for us. After that, it took another 30 minutes before anyone even came to take our order. We ended up waiting about an hour in the restaurant before we finally received our food. The staff worked as if they were being forced to be there, incredibly slowly and with absolutely no sense of urgency. The whole experience was frustrating and completely ruined what could have been a decent meal. The food was fine, but the service was honestly one of the worst I’ve experienced.

The food was excellent. We shared a burger, aubergine with pork, eggs with pork and gulagu salad. They are priced very well too. We also had some beers and coffees. All tasted phenomenal. Felt like mcdonalds... Every plate had mostly fries and a bit of meat on it. Portion sizes small. Waiter slow. It was super cold in the main room, due to the glass door not closing properly and wind blowing in constantly. We tried closing it a few times. The gofio mousse was a good dessert.

We chose this restaurant for our very first dinner in Tenerife, and it turned out to be a wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed by the warm and friendly staff. Everyone was attentive, professional, and always smiling, which made us feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the evening. The food was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, and full of flavour. The drinks were equally excellent and perfectly complemented our meal. As a lovely surprise, we were also treated to a complimentary little treat from the restaurant at the end, which was a very thoughtful touch. Thank you for such a memorable evening. We highly recommend this place and will definitely be returning during our stay in Tenerife! 😊🌴🍽️

A great restaurant with a cozy atmosphere and very friendly staff. On the day we visited, they were understaffed due to an accident, but they still managed to serve us efficiently and calmly, even though the restaurant was about half full. We didn’t have to wait long for our food. Our waiter didn’t speak much English, but we were still able to communicate easily, share a few jokes, and enjoy his friendly attitude. We started with the mussels, which were served in a delicious and unique sauceβ€”something I hadn’t experienced before with seafood. For the main course, we had caldoso, which was also new to us, and it was excellent. The seafood rice stew had a mild flavor, which I believe is typical for this dish. We didn’t mind, especially since the starter was quite rich and flavorful. Overall, a very enjoyable experience.

We went on a Tuesday evening in early March. The waiter was a bit intense and eccentric but I think that was just his personality and he was friendly. We had sangria, which was nice and he saw us trying to decide and suggested a dish for us. It was a whole pan fried sea bass with garlic, chilli and potatoes. It was quite rich and salty, but it was yummy and nice to know it was a local specialty apparently. We then had a coconut and watermelon dessert which was refreshing. The atmosphere was fine, nothing special, but nice enough.
Mads Kolbuβ˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†
There’s a particular kind of disappointment that only an empty restaurant can deliver. A busy dining room hides things β€” slow service becomes the price of popularity, a flat dish becomes the cost of a kitchen under pressure. But when you’re the only guests in the room, every flaw stands alone in the spotlight. There’s nowhere for the evening to hide. We arrived to find our reservation had vanished. No matter β€” the room was empty, tables in abundance. What wasn’t in abundance was enthusiasm. We were received not as guests but as a mild administrative problem, an unwelcome task interrupting what had clearly been a peaceful evening of doing very little. We were shown to a table with the air of a man being handed paperwork on his day off. The wine list turned out to be a work of historical fiction. The bottle I asked for didn’t exist. Nor did several others I tried. We eventually settled on a red whose chief virtue was being physically present in the building. I ordered the entrecΓ΄te medium-rare and was steered, gently, toward medium by the waiter β€” a suggestion I accepted in good faith, assuming some local calibration was at play. That was my first mistake of the evening. Not my last. The starter arrived: cold vegetables and warm cheese, sharing a plate but nothing else. It tasted of almost nothing, which is harder to pull off than it sounds given the number of ingredients involved. Then the mains. The fries were fine. The grilled vegetables were fine. The entrecΓ΄te was a uniformly grey object, pre-sliced before cooking β€” a decision I’m still turning over in my head β€” so that every piece had been robbed in advance of the pink, juicy centre a steak is supposed to have. I ate most of it anyway, because I was hungry, and because complaining felt more exhausting than chewing. Nobody came to ask how the food was. This turned out to be a kindness β€” we were spared the awkwardness of lying politely. When the plates were finally cleared, a good twenty minutes after we’d stopped pretending to eat, I mentioned, mildly, that the steak had been overcooked. The waiter β€” who’d been radiating quiet displeasure since we walked in β€” sighed, turned on his heel, and walked off with the wounded gravity of a tragic heroine leaving a scene. Thirty seconds later, unprompted, the bill appeared, delivered by a colleague. No apology. No acknowledgement. Just the brisk transaction of a restaurant that wanted us gone. I left feeling not angry, but a bit sad. A restaurant is, at its heart, an act of hospitality. Take the hospitality away and you’re left with just the transaction β€” and the transaction, on this occasion, wasn’t really worth completing.

The best restaurant at Tenerife. For starters we had iberico ham cutted in front of us as well as pimientos padron. For main we had amazing secreto, grilled beef, salmon and salat. Delicious- everything was simple but incredibly flavorful and skillfully prepared. Quality food in a very charming traditional space. We have enjoyed a delicious lunch at this Tasca. Service was very good, and prices reasonable. A shame the pork was served rare, but it was promptly corrected. Highly recommended if you are looking for gourmet food that is nicely served. They also prepared a nice dish of breaded chicken breast with potato fries for our daughter. The accompanying bread was very nice, and we all enjoyed a beautiful white wine. It ambiance is cosy and quiet. Toilets are very clean, which isn't common in Tenerife! The restaurant is very small and gets fully booked quickly, so reservations are required. Overall, I would say this is one of the best restaurants on the island, and one we will definitely want to revisit. Update: On our last visit in December 2022, we found this restaurant to be too expensive. Nicely cooked, but overall not great value for money.

We will gladly return and highly recommend it to everyone!

The best tuna I've ever had. The dishes were all incredibly good. You can sense the true passion of the chef for his work. Not a lot of tables so reservation is a must.

Best lunch I had in this city. This is the type of place Anthony Bourdain would visit and love if he was still on this earth. Delicious, thoughtfully prepared dishes with authenticity, personality and flavor. Loved the energy of the decor and how simple yet delectable the menu is. They use mostly locally sourced produce and ecological agriculture which enriches flavors and supports a more sustainable environment. Be mindful they only have a handful of tables so reservations are useful, but I walked in and got lucky. Wonderful, bilingual and kind service as well by a small, dedicated team. This place is great for couples, families or just anyone who enjoys great tasting food and good wine. You can tell this is a family owned business and they truly care and infuse love into their work. I had the tartar and the mushroom/ spinach lasagna which was literally one of the best I’ve had in my life. Kudos to the chef - who based on all the Argentina references hanging on the walls- I believe is from there. Highly recommended!

The very best service! The food and drinks were the best I’ve had in Spain thus far! I had questions in English and Alayna was very helpful to try and understand what I was saying and we ended up figuring it out and she also went the extra mile to help me out

Amazing tapas! Stopped here for lunch. We were pleased we did. Garlic mushrooms dish was the highlight, it was delicious! Tuna house salad, ham croquettes, and fish churros (fish in a lovely batter) was all good. Will come again.

A popular place and well located in the heart of La Laguna. It offers homemade Canarian food with good portions and reasonable prices. Goat meat stands out, delicious, garlic mushrooms, shrimps and croquettes. The atmosphere is informal and the treatment of the staff, friendly. Ideal for a stop during a walk through the historic center. The general experience is satisfactory, the food was great, from flavor to preparation and cooking.

Amazing friendly staff, literally everyone was welcoming. Pork sirloin or bichillo was really tasty, it was tender and came with a bright red mojo. Eggplant with honey did not disappoint, it was well balanced though got a little too rich. A local secret is to order the Gofio mousse and espresso. Make a well in the center, pour in half the espresso, and you have a creamy, malty, sweet, tiramisu-like dessert. I call it Gofioso. Only feedback is to allow people to swap the fries with canarian potatoes just to lower the amount of oil.

First time at LAGULA and was not disappointed. My husband and I wanted to sample the Canarian food and that we did in spades by choosing a sampler menu ( Lagula’s banquet) for two which included wine, starters, main and dessert . No thinking required. My husband is diary free and we were accommodated . Carlos was super ! Great evening and would highly recommend .

The restaurant is a dream and completely hidden with a simple and charming ambience. The food and the staff are outstanding. Most of the food is home-grown and freshly prepared. It tastes exactly as it is artfully served. The staff are very attentive and take their time, even though it was very busy at the time. Weβ€˜d love to come back!

Looking for a local restaurant in La Laguna that serves Canarian/Seafood dishes, this is as good as it gets! Good and quality food for a reasonable price. We ordered the food, had it and paid all in 25 minutes! Even Speedy Gonzales can’t do it faster πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

Practical Tips for Dining in La Laguna

Dining in La Laguna is a relaxed affair, but knowing a few local customs can greatly enhance your experience. The city operates on a Spanish schedule, and many of the best dishes are not available all day. Understanding how to order, when to arrive, and what to expect regarding service will ensure you get the most out of every meal.

1. Embrace the local meal times.
Lunch (almuerzo) is typically served from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, while dinner (cena) rarely starts before 8:30 PM. If you arrive at a restaurant at 6:00 PM, you will likely find the kitchen closed. Plan your day around these hours, or stick to cafes and bakeries for a mid-afternoon snack.

2. Don’t skip the "barra" (bar area).
In many traditional spots, the best atmosphere and the quickest service are found at the bar. Standing or sitting at the bar often allows you to order smaller portions (medias raciones) and see the day’s fresh produce displayed in glass cases. It is also a great way to chat with the staff about what is best that day.

3. Look for "Menu del DΓa" at lunch.
If you want a high-quality meal at a fraction of the dinner price, ask for the set lunch menu. Many of the top restaurants in La Laguna offer a fixed-price menu that includes a starter, main course, dessert, and a drink. This is the best way to try fine dining without breaking the bank.

4. Understand the difference between mojos.
Tenerife is famous for two sauces: mojo rojo (red, made with peppers and paprika) and mojo verde (green, made with cilantro or parsley). They are served with almost everything, especially wrinkled potatoes (papas arrugadas). Always taste both, but be aware that the red one can sometimes be spicy, depending on the chef’s recipe.

5. Reserve ahead, especially on weekends.
La Laguna is a university city, and the locals love to eat out. On Friday and Saturday nights, as well as Sunday afternoons, the best terraces and dining rooms fill up quickly. A quick phone call or WhatsApp message to the restaurant in the morning can save you a long wait in the cool evening air.

6. Be patient and enjoy the "sobremesa."
Service in Tenerife is generally friendly but unhurried. Waiters will not rush you to pay the bill, as meals are meant to be social events. When you finish eating, it is customary to sit and talk (la sobremesa). You will usually need to ask for the check ("la cuenta, por favor") when you are ready to leave.

Exploring the restaurants of La Laguna is about more than just eating; it is about participating in a culture that values slow food and good company. The city’s cool climate makes it perfect for enjoying hearty stews and robust red wines from the nearby Tacoronte-Acentejo region, so don’t be afraid to ask for a local pairing.

As you wander back through the historic streets after your meal, you will understand why this city is considered the cultural heart of Tenerife. The flavors you experience here are the result of centuries of tradition, and they offer a delicious contrast to the more international menus found on the island’s southern coast.
