Sitting down for a proper Spanish meal is a ritual, but sometimes the best way to understand the soul of Madrid is to eat standing up, jostling gently for space at a polished wooden bar. While the grand architecture of Plaza de España often leaves visitors breathless, the surrounding side streets hold a secret world of culinary magic. These aren’t just places to eat; they are social hubs where the clink of vermouth glasses punctuates the air and the aroma of sizzling garlic drifts out onto the cobblestones.
The area surrounding Plaza de España serves as a perfect crossroads between the historic Austrias district and the vibrant Malasaña neighborhood. This unique geographic positioning means the tapas scene here is wonderfully diverse. You are just as likely to find a century-old tavern serving traditional bull tail stew as you are a modern gastro-bar plating avant-garde miniature cuisine.
For the uninitiated, navigating the tapas culture can be daunting. Unlike a standard restaurant, the rhythm is different; you might pop in for a single tapa and a caña (small beer) before moving to the next stop. It is a culinary crawl, a way to sample the city’s best flavors without committing to a single table for the evening.
The true beauty of eating near Plaza de España is the authenticity that remains despite the tourist foot traffic. Many of these establishments have been family-run for generations, preserving recipes that date back to the post-war era. They serve as guardians of Madrid’s gastronomic heritage, refusing to cut corners on the quality of their olive oil or the freshness of their seafood.
However, the area is not frozen in time. A wave of young, passionate chefs has moved in, injecting new energy into the classic tapas formula. They respect the traditions of the past while experimenting with global ingredients and modern presentation, creating a dynamic dining landscape that satisfies both purists and adventurers.
Choosing where to eat can be overwhelming, especially when hunger strikes after a long walk through the Royal Palace. You want to avoid the tourist traps with their laminated menus and sad-looking paella, and instead find the spots where locals actually gather after work. The key is to look for crowded counters, the sound of Spanish conversation, and napkins scattered on the floor—a sign of a truly great bar.
To help you cut through the noise and eat like a local, we have curated a list of the most essential stops. Whether you are looking for the perfect jamón ibérico or a modern twist on a tortilla, these are the places that define the neighborhood’s character. Here are the definitive spots you cannot miss.

Great food, fresh, tasty, full local, min. tourists. Waiters do not speak english but you can communicate somehow. If you want to enjoy tapas at a local taberna, it will be a great choice. Especially, seafood is amazing…

Food was nice in general as loads of options on the menu. Highly recommend the courgettes and pork in whiskey sauce. Customer service was fast and they were very friendly. Only annoying thing was that the prawns was served as a small portion despite the €16 charge!

Wow, hands down one of the best restaurants in Seville. Great prices, high-quality products, and a service that is both warm and professional. I went several times during my stay in Sevilla, and everything we ordered was phenomenal every single time. The place fills up quickly, so try to arrive early this is a testament to its quality, as many locals go there because they know it’s a great spot. 100% recommended.

The waiters were incredibly kind and attentive, creating a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The ambiance was pleasant and comfortable, making it a great place to sit and enjoy a meal. The food was excellent, full of flavor, and served in very generous portions. Everything was spot on and absolutely worth recommending. The four of us ate more than enough and were completely full for 90€, which felt fair for the quality and quantity we received.

We had tapas consisting of shrimp, calamari, fish, chicken liver, cod, olives and goat cheese. We drank sangria. For dessert, we had cheesecake and an almond dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious. The service was very fast, and there was no need to wait in line. The atmosphere was beautiful. It was a fantastic Michelin restaurant. I could have dinner there every single day.

Cut to the chase, good food, fresh, flavorful, nicely prepared, nicely presented. We had the spinach and casserole, the flavors were unique and quite nice. The decor is casual, elegant, and comfortable. Service was friendly, would not hesitate to go there again. Recommended.

We had a great experience here. The Leidy serving us was very warm and friendly. Our orders arrived quickly, and everything was well organized. We ordered 4–5 different tapas, and even though they were tapas, the portions were quite generous. The chickpeas with spinach dish was especially delicious. Highly recommended!

I had such an amazing experience at la Gorda De Las Zetas. I prefer to eat a pescatarian menu, so finding a wide variety of vegetarian and fish dishes is always a challenge. But my awesome server, Lady, took care of me. I thoroughly enjoyed every plate. Prices were very reasonable, and I recommend the dogfish, gratiné cod, and the salmon with vegetables. Enjoy!

This is the best tapas bar if you want to experience a truly local and convivial atmosphere. It’s always packed, though. Even though I don’t speak Spanish, other customers helped me out, and the staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. The food was delicious, the ambience was great, and I even met a gentleman who unexpectedly paid my bill, as well as the bill of a French couple sitting next to me. I didn’t understand what was happening at first, but if he ever comes across this comment, I would love to thank him properly and get in touch. The charm of Spain I would say.

Thank you Senor Manuel for being patient with us! He was super friendly and nice. You are the best!!!!
We just went up to the bar and ordered with no problem. The serving time was super fast!
We were able to grab a seat later on and made friends with people sitting around us.
Everything was delicious and so much fun!
Highly recommended just for the experience but food was also good.
Huevas fritas was our favorite😋

Tapas start at just over 3 euros, which is an amazing price for a location in the heart of a major city like Seville. Plus, the food is delicious. The waitstaff are attentive, and the place is bustling with energy. It’s a tapas bar that left me feeling nothing but satisfied.
There are only about four tables on the terrace. It was lucky to get a seat here?

We ate here twice during our five night stay and the food was excellent and very good value both times. There is an excellent wine list. This place does get busy and service can be a little slow as a result. Also remember that people can smoke on the terrace and with tables very close together, this can be quite off putting when eating.
Sophie Lé★★★★☆
Had a lovely lunch at this tapas bar. We do recommend the patatas bravas as well as the croquetas. It wasn’t too busy at lunch but the servers did seem overwhelmed with the amount of tables. Either way we did enjoy our time. Caution when eating the cod there were some fish bones in our cod. The bread was ok we don’t recommend getting it. The cheese plate was tasty.

Excellent and authentic. We came here for a bottle of wine, tapas, amd dessert. Every dish was flavorful, rich, and delicious. Our waiter helped us pick our wine and he did a fantastic job with a full bodied dry red which was just what we were looking for. This place has been around for over 100 years, and it's easy to see why it is still popular with locals and tourist alike. Highly recommend!

Delicious! The food here is so good, we loved the cheese and ham platters, empanada, tortilla (with a delicious sauce). Sangria was great here too. The service is fast and friendly. The patio is very cozy, lots of seating (and don’t need a redo especially if you arrive near opening). Coming from North America, I can say this is one of the best empanadas I’ve ever had.
There’s also a children’s playground next door in case you have kids who need a break.
Thank you for hosting us!

We were actually on our way to Granada and had only planned to make a short one-hour stop in Seville. However, the city was so beautiful, vibrant, and charming that we ended up staying for almost four hours.
Since we had not planned where to eat, I did a quick search online and discovered that this bar was one of the most popular and well-known places in the area.😍
We arrived about 30–40 minutes before closing time. It was easy to find, in a great location, and since it was near the end of service, it was not too crowded and we were able to get a table immediately.
Now, the most important part: the food!😋😋🤩🥰😎
Honestly, these were the best croquettes I had during my entire trip to Spain. I had eaten in Granada, Toledo, and other cities, but the croquettes here were truly outstanding. We also tried Jamón Ibérico, which was delicious and of excellent quality. Even the olives were different from what we usually find—large, flavorful, and absolutely delicious.🤩🥰😎😋😋😋
The only dish my husband did not particularly enjoy was the omelette. Other than that, everything we ordered was excellent.
What impressed us the most was the service. The staff were attentive, regularly checked on us, made sure we had everything we needed, and the food arrived quickly. Their friendliness and professionalism made a big difference.
In total, we spent around €50 for two people. While it wasn't the cheapest meal of our trip, it was absolutely worth it considering the quality of the food and the overall experience.
In fact, this was our last stop before leaving Seville, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. It left us with a wonderful memory and a perfect ending to our time in the city.
If you're looking for delicious food, excellent service, and an authentic local experience in Seville, I highly recommend this place.🥰🤩

The food here was amazing, particularly the spinach and chickpea dish -the Garbanzella was the absolute highlight of the meal. The Salmón Ibérico was a little bit on the dry side, but still tasted good. As for the vibe, the atmosphere is incredibly traditional and nice, and the service is completely spot on. It is definitely on the pricier side compared to other local tapas spots in the area, but the excellent food and traditional setting make it well worth visiting for a night out.

The first tapas bar in the world, established in 1670.
Great food, really friendly and helpful service which makes you feel at home immediately.
The vintage interior, the iberian jamon hanging from the ceiling and then being cut in front of you, the (surprisingly low) bill written on the table with chalk - really makes the experience one of a kind.
A true must-go in Seville.

e made a reservation in advance to make sure we got a table.
The waiters were super nice and friendly, and they actually helped us choose what to order. They also had a few daily specials that we couldn’t resist trying.
We ordered the oxtail as well, and it was absolutely amazing.
Definitely recommend this place, and I strongly recommend making a reservation. Otherwise, you’ll likely have to wait in a long line to get a table.
Tj Gross★★★★★
I gave this establishment 5 stars purley for the history. This establishment is the oldest pub in Seville dating back to 1670. The history and stories this place has is unimaginable. The food and wait staff are great the servers operate the place as if it is their own. DefInetly try the pork in whiskey sauce. There are No chairs so expect to stand for your entire stay. Take in the atmosphere that centuries ago sailors and royalty would drink and eat at this little shop.

Last weekend we had pan tomate breakfast in this market cafe. Very good food and coffee, lovely staff, lively and friendly atmosphere. Then today the seafood tapas. WOW! Ganbas al ajillo, hake steaks, sardinas a la plancha, tortilla de camarones: all cooked to order, freshest ever. With bread and water = E18. What a great place. They even have table umbrellas that spray water in the air to keep you cool. My favourite cafe ever!

When we first arrived in Sevilla this was the first bar we stumbled upon. We had a couple of different plates of fried and grilled fish and we loved all of them. The vibes where authentic and very relaxed with a lot of locals enjoying the food. It’s located in this little market building, that has very little frills. The staff is friendly and efficient

Our favorite restaurant in Seville was La Bartola. Delicious tapas, great sangria for less than 3 Euros and very friendly servers. We are still dreaming about the Iberian pork cheek stew over potato purée, the caponata, croquettes and homemade desserts. We ate there 3 times during our visit it is that good!

Really tasty food here! We ordered a few tapas and everything was great, especially the baby squid, swordfish roll, pig cheek, and beef.
Service was fast for the first round, but a bit slower on the second. The place has a great vibe, very lively at night and can get busy.
Prices are very reasonable. Overall, a great dinner spot.

We were there last Thursday for dinner and we weren't disappointed.
We've eaten a meal without paying a lot of money and the atmosphere was quite nice due to the smilling staff.
We've really enjoyed the food.
Everything was simply amazing so - in my opinion - you should visit "La Bartola" and you won't regret for no doubt! 🤩

The best food I had in all of Seville.. stopped by this place for late dinner during my recent trip to Seville and this place did not disappoint. We ordered their roasted lamb with cous cous, garlic shrimp croquetta (that was the croquetta of the day), pork cheek stew with potato purée and the chocolate panna cotta for dessert. We also ordered their sangria and tinto de verano. Every dish we ordered was AMAZING - tasty flavorful well seasoned melt in your mouth meat bursting with flavors. We devoured every bite and it was hard to pick a favorite. Both the lamb and pork dishes were 11/10. Not just the taste but the presentation of every tapa was fantastic. Their drinks were also great. The dessert was to die for.
This place is super packed during peak dinner hours and there is barely any room to stand. Since we walked in around 11pm, we got a seat and were well taken care of all thru the night. Also noticed alot of veggie options on the menu which was great. Service was awesome ambience is chic. I am certain I am going to crave their tapas once I am back home. Highly highly recommend this place when in Seville.

We tried several things, the anchovies, cheese, sushi verdura, stuffed zucchini, tataki de salmon, thai red rice as well as eggplant salad. The thai red rice was our least favourite but everything else was delicious. There is always a line up here around dinner time but the staff are amazing and get the line moving quickly. We were impressed with our server as she was gracefully attending to a dozen tables and didn't forget any of our requests.

My husband & I came here for dinner after it was recommended to us by our hotel. It was an amazing experience & we were so happy with everything that we ordered.

Very positive experience. Besides the place being very beautiful, very cozy, warm and welcoming, we were very well taken care of, the waiter was very helpful and made a point of explaining more about the portions and the dishes, and in the end, everything turned out exactly as expected, right? We ate well, we were looking for a good restaurant in Seville that would suit our taste and this was one of them. I recommend it.
Meredith Lane★★★★☆
Love the parent company of this restaurant! I would recommend a reservation, for sure. The menu overlaps with the other restaurants, but the food is good nonetheless. I didn't care for the chicken yakitori because of the texture, but the sauce was nice. The bao bun was very well done and the gyozas were pretty good. The Korean bravas were tater tots, which was fun, but they weren't crispy and it felt like it could've used more sauce. As for the mini burger (not pictured), we had to send it back to be cooked more, and they were super accommodating with that, but it was less than special in my opinion. The fries were thin and crispy, though!!!
I would go back for the bao and gyozas, and to try the torrija. I think it's a solid go-to, but nothing out of this world.

Local Spanish cuisines which are unique to the southern Spanish style of cooking. Not touristy, and filled with locals. It came highly recommended by the local cab drivers, and indeed we were not disappointed.
The potatoes are their speciality, so make sure to order that! Amongst many dishes which were new and unique to my belly!
Very well plated and presented, and certainly yummy!

Ordered patatas bravas, chicken Bao buns, prawn tacos & beef tenderloin - all amazing, beef tenderloin was so tender and full of flavour.
Dessert was delicious (happy hippo)

The food is so so good, and cheap aswell. The staff friendly, and you don't need to wait so long. We recommend the stew pork and black noodle, so good. Only one problem is restaurant quite small, and the table is suitable for 2, so if you go 3 people or more you need to wait abit. We have 2 adults and 1 child, total just €27. Unbelievable 🥰

Great spot with reasonable prices and a cool vibe. It’s very small, so you’ll probably have to wait for a table, but it’s worth it. The mushroom croquettes and roja pesto bruschetta were standout dishes. The sangria is strong, and the tinto de verano is really refreshing. Definitely recommend!

Tapas bar. You have to go up to the counter to order and get your food and drinks. Staff weren’t too friendly as it was quite busy. The croquettes were nice. However the lasagna and squid noodles were not. Maybe it was my fault for ordering this at a Spanish tapas bar. Anyways, would advise not to get them.

We stumbled across this restaurant local to our accommodation and decided to give it a go. The restaurant was busy, there was good variety on the menu and the prices were good too.
I chose the pork cheek, which was particularly good. The meat was so tender and flavoursome, with a small accompanying portion of fries.
The sangria too was good and brilliantly priced at €3.50.
Two of my family ordered the chicken breast plate. Again, great value, but whilst one was cooked well, the first cut into the portion revealed that it wasn't just undercooked - rather raw.
We pointed this out to serving staff, an apology was offered and the chicken returned to the grill. It came back a few minutes later, properly cooked and piping hot - except for the fries, which based on their temperature, hadn't been changed.
Service was of an acceptable standard but bordered on being slightly cold and frosty. Whilst staff did correct the uncooked chicken dish, we [perhaps reasonably] expected somebody to come and ensure our satisfaction when the meal was re-served. That unfortunately didn't happen.
For the food, the restaurant was good. For the service, it was simply rather average and frankly forgettable.

Great food quality. The oxtail and pork cheeks were both very tender and flavorful. I did find both had similar taste, perhaps due to them using the same gravy. Service was quick and friendly.
Tips for a Perfect Tapas Experience
Navigating the tapas scene requires a bit of local knowledge to ensure you get the most out of your culinary adventure. While the bars listed above are all welcoming, understanding the unwritten rules of Spanish dining culture will elevate your experience from good to unforgettable. Here is how to blend in and eat like a true Madrileño.
Embrace the "Barra" (The Counter). While many places have dining rooms in the back, the action happens at the bar. Standing at the counter allows you to point directly at the dishes you want, interact with the bartender, and soak up the atmosphere. Don’t be afraid to squeeze in; personal space is a luxury rarely afforded in a popular tapas bar, and the proximity is part of the charm.
Master the Art of Ordering. In many traditional spots, especially those in the Austrias district, a tapa is often given free with a drink. However, in the more modern gastro-bars, you will likely need to order "raciones" (larger sharing plates) or "media raciones" (half portions). It is perfectly acceptable to order one drink and one small dish, pay, and leave to go to the next place.
Timing is Everything. Spaniards eat late. If you arrive for dinner at 7:00 PM, you will likely find empty bars and staff preparing for the rush. For the best atmosphere, head out for a pre-lunch snack around 1:30 PM, or start your evening crawl around 8:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The bars will be bustling, and the food will be at its freshest turnover.
Look for the Daily Specials. Many tapas bars offer a "menú del día" during lunch or have a chalkboard listing seasonal specialties. Always check the board or ask "¿Qué hay de especial?" (What is special today?). This is where you will find the freshest ingredients, often featuring seasonal vegetables, wild game, or the day’s catch.
Don’t Skip the Vermouth. While wine and beer are standard, Madrid has a deep love affair with "vermú de grifo" (vermouth on tap). It is slightly sweet, herbaceous, and served over ice with an orange slice. It is the traditional aperitif to drink before a meal and pairs beautifully with salty anchovies or olives.
The beauty of the area around Plaza de España is that you can spend an entire evening wandering from one establishment to the next, discovering hidden plazas and historic facades along the way. It is a journey that feeds not only the stomach but also the soul, offering a genuine connection to the pulse of Madrid.
So, loosen your belt, practice your Spanish pleasantries, and dive into the bustling world of the Madrid tapas bar. Whether you leave with a full stomach or a new favorite wine, the memories made at these counters will linger long after you have left the shadow of the square.
