Perched on a rocky headland above the sparkling Mediterranean, Peñíscola Castle is one of Spain’s most dramatic coastal landmarks. This medieval fortress, famously featured in the film El Cid and once home to the controversial Pope Benedict XIII, draws history lovers and sun-seekers alike. Finding the right base for your visit transforms a simple sightseeing trip into a seamless, immersive getaway.
Staying close to the castle means you can experience its cobbled lanes at dawn before the tour buses arrive and linger on the ramparts as the sun sets over the sea. The surrounding area offers a surprising variety of accommodation, ranging from intimate boutique hotels tucked inside the old town walls to modern beachfront resorts with panoramic sea views. Whether you prioritize direct castle access, family-friendly amenities, or a quiet romantic escape, there is a property suited to your travel style.
Many travelers assume that staying directly inside the historic center is the only way to enjoy the castle, but the broader Peñíscola coastline offers excellent alternatives. The North Beach and South Beach promenades are lined with hotels that provide easy walking access, private parking, and uninterrupted views of the fortress silhouette. Understanding the layout of the town is key to choosing the right neighborhood for your needs.
The old town, known locally as the Casco Antiguo, is a maze of whitewashed houses, artisan shops, and hidden terraces. Hotels here place you literally steps from the castle entrance, though you may need to park outside the walls and walk a short distance with your luggage. For those who value atmosphere and authenticity over modern conveniences, this area is unbeatable.
The newer beachfront zone, stretching along the Playa Norte, offers broader streets, elevator access, and contemporary facilities. From here, the castle remains a pleasant fifteen-minute stroll along the seafront promenade. This area is particularly well suited to families with strollers, older travelers, and anyone arriving by car who wants straightforward parking.
When selecting your accommodation, consider the time of year. Summer brings vibrant energy, open-air terraces, and warm swimming conditions, while spring and autumn offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Winter, though quiet, reveals a peaceful side of Peñíscola with dramatic sea storms and empty ramparts that feel almost private.
No matter where you choose to stay, the castle remains the magnetic heart of the town. A well-chosen hotel enhances the experience by giving you a comfortable retreat after a day of exploring stone staircases, secret gardens, and sweeping sea views. The following selection of properties balances location, guest comfort, and value to help you make an informed choice.

Be careful with the room you choose. Incredibly small and uncomfortable. The bed super small also. I paid 165€ and got an incredibly small room in the back of the hotel. Terrible.

Excellent hotel. Very pleasant rooms. It is important to take the balcony. The food in the morning brakfest is excellent. The location of the hotel is excellent. It's a shame it doesn't have parking and it's a shame there's no kettle to make coffee or tea in the room. The staff is very pleasant and helpful

Location is great, right next to the old town, great sea views, superb customer service and staff, and especially awesome food if you book half/full-board, which I totally recommend! I don't tend to be a full-board person as I usually prefer to explore the area looking for local food, and hotel food is usually not the greatest, but this property offers great food quality and variety for a very reasonable price, totally worth it! Would come back again for sure.

The hostal offers confortable rooms with nice rustic art decorations. Their breakfast is very tasty. Location is great, within the city center (no cars so no traffic and noise, but you will need to walk from nearest parking zone). The area is close to the beaches and within the historic center. There are stairs to reach the room and you can store a baby stroller at the reception. The hostal is owned by a Finnish-Spanish couple - they both and their staff are incredibly friendly and nice. Service was really great and our stay in Peniscola was amazing.

We had a lovely stay! Despite having a bit of trouble finding the place, having to wend our way (with luggage) up the windy paths, we got directions from a local-- the old town is so small everyone knows where everyone lives. Beautiful room, amazingly quiet, the best bed of our whole trip. Also the best breakfast! Wonderful hosts.

We didn’t stay here, but had breakfast here twice on our holiday. They are really welcoming, it has a great atmosphere, and the food is lovely. Do not miss it on your holiday! Oh and the coffee is divine!

We had a fantastic stay at this little guesthouse in Peñiscola old town. Perfectly located with two perfect and hard working hosts. The rooms were perfect, comfortable and warm with a roof terrace with views over the rooftops and out to sea. We ate a wonderful breakfast inside and had a good dinner outside the night before. Thoughtful touches such as blankets to keep you warm outside are a nice touch. A fantastic place and we will return.

We had a lovely 3 night stay in May. Excellent, small b&b, near the castle in Peñiscola, very good value. The owners were very friendly. The breakfasts were excellent, with alot of choice. And the bar opposite also owned by them, had a small but very good menu, and good drinks selection, lovely to sit outside in the evening in the picturesque street. Highly recommend.

We had a wonderful 2-night stay at this hotel. The location couldn’t have been better—right next to the beach and the castle, making it the perfect base for exploring the area.
The rooms were modern, spacious, and spotlessly clean, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming throughout our stay.
There are plenty of excellent restaurants nearby, but we especially recommend having lunch at the hotel restaurant. The food was delicious, with a fantastic selection of fresh seafood that was one of the highlights of our visit.
We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing stay in a beautiful location.

We cannot give this lovely hidden gem high enough ratings. We are staying here for 6 weeks as this is just one of those places where you don’t want to leave.
The rooms are amazingly clean because of Marta and ours was spacious and light.
The Hotels restaurant is one of the best in Peniscola because Othelia and F. are excellent cooks.
Service is perfect. Baco, Juan and the team makes sure everyone feels special.
Thank you all for welcoming us with such open arms.
We will be back for many more stays.

I had to cancel as I was unable to travel due to illness. The room is already paid for, but as I cancelled it can now be used. Charged me for an extra night.... the room is fully paid so the hotel would not have lost any money, but someone might have seen the laye availability.
Disgusting behaviour. Do not use this hotel.

This small hotel and staff makes you feel like you are welcomed from the start to the end of your stay

I have now stayed twice at this lovely small hotel, once in February, and most recently in October. Its location on the Plaza de Armas across from the castle is superb, the rooms beautiful, quiet and light-filled, and the views from the rooftop terrace jaw-dropping. And then there is the excellent breakfast … prepared and served con cariño. Cristina and Chris are both very kind and gracious hosts. ¡And Chris makes a mean tortilla española! What a joy, and more than worth the walk uphill through the cobblestoned streets.

Boutique 6 room hotel at the foot of the Castello in Peniscola.
The hotel is run by Chris and Cristina who are terrific sources of local in formation and are happy to share. Chris speaks perfect American English. Both are delightful.
Breakfast was included... your choice of Iberic ham. salmon, croissants. traditional toast with tomatoes and fresh squeezed orange juice.
Although daunting, the walk up to the hostel is not bad at all, and access to the village of Peniscola from the hostel is a five minute walk. Unless you are used to driving on narrow, medieval streets, leave your car at one of the many inexpensive parking lots in town and just walk.
The hostel is in an ancient building but has been thoroughly and meticulously updated with modern plumbing, air conditioning, good wifi and electricity. Rooms are large and eclectic.

We only stayed one night, but it was a great experience. The hotel is beautiful, very welcoming and very well maintained. We felt very comfortable from the first moment.

Communication was very smooth and quick. We will return and I highly recommend it.

My wife and I spent this past weekend here, and I have to say the experience was fantastic. I recommend the hostel one hundred percent. The location is excellent, and it's brand new. The room was amazing, with great views and excellent soundproofing—you can't hear the street at all. The bed and pillows were incredibly comfortable. The jacuzzi, which I've included a photo of, was absolutely fantastic and very modern. And best of all was the kindness and professionalism of the managers. They're a couple of tireless workers who go out of their way to meet your needs and make your stay a dream come true. We used the hostel's parking, since parking is impossible in the old town, and they drove us there and back in their own car. It's not easy to find people like that these days. My wife and I have traveled extensively, and I can assure you I've never seen that level of professionalism and dedication to their work. Congratulations, and keep up the good work!
Maria Bahamonde★★★★★
We stayed at this hotel in Peñíscola and we left with a very positive impression. We booked a room with a jacuzzi and it was a great choice. After spending the whole day strolling around Peñíscola or on the beach, arriving and stepping into the jacuzzi is like stepping into another level. Absolutely relaxing.
The room was clean, comfortable, and everything worked perfectly. You can tell when things are well-maintained.
But what I want to highlight most is the kindness of the woman who looked after us. She was truly delightful. Friendly, attentive, and always with a positive attitude. She made us feel right at home from the very first moment, and that's priceless. Some places are beautiful, but when you're also treated well, the experience is completely transformed.
The location in Peñíscola is also excellent, so it's perfect for a romantic getaway or a few days of relaxation.
We would definitely return.

The room was perfect for our break. Clean, comfortable, and cute with again incredible views from every aspect. Location is ideal for wandering the streets and the restaurants and castle. Cannot fault it and already looking at booking a return trip. Thank you for an amazing stay!

From the very first moment, the Joanna Hotel in Peñíscola felt less like a hotel and more like a home we didn’t know we were missing. This beautiful, family-run boutique hotel is filled with heart, soul, and an incredible amount of love in every single detail.
The rooms are absolutely stunning - thoughtfully designed, incredibly cozy, and full of character. Every corner reflects care, creativity, and a special flair that makes you feel instantly comfortable and inspired. You can truly feel how much love has gone into creating each space.
What makes the Joanna Hotel truly unforgettable, though, are the people. Every single person we met is warm, genuine, and kind - people with heart and soul. We felt so welcomed, so cared for, and so completely at ease that we honestly didn’t want to leave. In fact, we loved it so much that we ended up extending our stay again and again… I believe seven times in total. That alone says everything.
A very special mention goes to Jose - incredibly charming, funny, and always there when we needed anything at all. He made us feel seen, relaxed, and truly at home.
The location of this boutique hotel is absolutely perfect, and the restaurant connected to the hotel is really, really good - a true highlight on its own and reason enough to stay longer.
We fell in love, with the hotel, the warmth, the people, and the entire experience.
We recommend the Joanna Hotel from the bottom of our hearts and encourage everyone to experience it for themselves.
We will definitely be back. 💛

Leticia Enamorado Aznar★★★☆☆
The room was very small and smelled musty.
The location is perfect for being in the old town, but I wouldn't recommend it if you only want to go to the beach.
The minibar barely cooled anything; there were two small bottles of water inside, which were appreciated.
The bed was very comfortable and large, but the television is mounted too close and high at the foot of the bed, which was a bit inconvenient.
The bathroom had shower gel, shampoo, hand soap, a hairdryer, and micellar water with three makeup remover pads (a nice touch).
The decor was very fitting and attractive, yet simple.
They came into the room to clean it even though we had put the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door. We weren't inside at the time, but we didn't appreciate them ignoring the sign.
The service from the person who greeted us at the restaurant was impeccable; they were very pleasant and helpful.
It was more than enough for a relaxing weekend, but we wouldn't stay for a week-long vacation. We felt it was expensive for the quality.
moni lamug★★★★☆
The hotel was great, very cute, right in the old town, and everything was very well explained for getting there. No Netflix, but clean and with nice touches in the room. However, I have to say that the breakfast was a rip-off, so I advise guests to have breakfast somewhere else because it's too basic, the food is scarce, and it's extremely expensive for what it is. Starting with a coffee with milk = €3, imagine the toast (which was also small).

Our stay was unbeatable. The location is fantastic, surrounded by a wide variety of restaurants and points of interest. The hotel stands out for its beautiful and meticulously detailed decor, but what truly makes the difference is its staff.

Disappointing Experience – Room Smelled Like Smoke . Unfortunately, our experience at this hostel was disappointing. Upon arrival, we were given a room that had a strong smell of cigarette smoke, even though the listing on Booking.com clearly stated that the property was non-smoking.
The owner offered us a temporary solution for one night in another room, assuring us that the original room would be aired out. However, the next day, when we were asked to return, the smoke smell was still very present. The conditions were not acceptable, and we had no choice but to leave the property and find alternative accommodation.
We tried to resolve the issue through Booking.com, but the owner denied the seriousness of the problem and claimed a solution had already been provided, which we feel is a lack of transparency and responsibility.
This was a frustrating and stressful experience that we would not wish upon any traveler. We hope this review helps others make an informed decision, and that the hostel takes real steps to ensure their non-smoking policy is respected and that future guests are treated with more care.

What a cozy little place! This was our second annual stay at Chiki and we simply love this place. The pension is extremely intimate and provides an unforgetable experience in the very heart of the old castle. You feel the pulse of the street, of the centuries of history and can truly live in the past and in the present at the same time. Room was very clean, shower is wow with good hot water and pressure is super. It has a small balcony from which you can watch all the commotion in the narrow street and a bit of the sea on the right. Each day the room neatly cleaned with fresh towels and shampoos. You can cool yourself with AC but we did not use it. The restaurant below serves delicious spanish mediterranean cuisine and it is not expensive. It was full all of the time which indicates people love it. If you are looking for a mediterranean adventure then this is the place to start. Will be back nex year too and stay here. Very friendly staff. Looking forward to seeing you. Saludos de Romania. Great location with sea views. Staff is friendly and the room was clean, but the set up of the room was a bit strange. Awful. Do not come here if you want to sleep or rest. Woken up at around 7:30 by the sound of someone loudly cleaning the floor outside the room, then at 10:30 by an electric drill in one of the nearby rooms.
Totally inconsiderate when people have paid to come away to rest and I had already advised the hotel I was sick with a fever. The Aircon also barely works. In the room we were given there was also disgusting water penetration as well as insufficient cleaning - as shown in the attached photos.
I came here to celebrate my birthday and would rather have stayed at home. When my husband complained, the receptionist was very dismissive.
On Google, this hotel is listed as three stars. This is clearly misleading, as outside there is a huge sign stating it is actually a two star hotel.
I should have read their responses on Google to other negative reviews before booking, where the general lack of care or customer service is very evident - one of the worst attitudes I have encountered.
Shocking levels of service.

* Price-to-Value Disconnect: Extremely overpriced for the service provided (€3,700 for 10 nights).
* Unacceptable Hygiene: Dirty dishes, cutlery, and unhygienic table wiping in the main restaurant.
* Dismissive Staff: Unhelpful service, including a refusal to replace soaked pool towels.
* Basic Amenities & Late Schedule: Minimal room amenities (no kettle/coffee) and late opening hours for breakfast (8:30 AM) and the pool bar.
Overpriced and Disappointing Stay – Poor Hygiene and Subpar Service
Rating: 2 / 5
I cannot recommend this hotel, especially considering the premium price tag of €3,700 for a 10-night stay. While the beachfront location is nice, plenty of neighboring hotels offer the exact same view with far better service and standards. The experience fell well short of expectations in several key areas:
* Poor Customer Service: Staff came across as indifferent and dismissive. When we asked to replace our soaked pool towels, we were told to dry them in our room and reuse them for three days before requesting fresh ones—hardly the standard you expect at this price point.
* Major Restaurant Hygiene Concerns: Cleanliness in the dining area was a massive issue. Cutlery, plates, and glasses routinely had dried food debris on them. Tables were wiped down hastily with dirty cloths without disinfectant, leaving visible streaks.
* Basic Rooms & Inconvenient Hours: Rooms are extremely basic at least the one we had. There is no in-room coffee maker or kettle. Breakfast doesn't open until 8:30 AM, and the pool bar opens late as well, meaning early risers have no way to get a morning coffee on site.
This hotel needs a major overhaul in both guest service and room amenities to justify its rates. In its current state, it feels overpriced.

David Montesinos★★★★☆
The room has spectacular views and a very good location (within the old town and walled area).
Several things to keep in mind:
-First, the mattress and pillows are not comfortable in my opinion.
-Second, the breakfast is of very low quality (knowing it's continental). It can be done in many ways, starting with something of decent quality, such as Serrano ham, York ham, and cheese, which are very low quality. The toast is pre-sliced so the guest has to put it directly in the toaster, and the bread is cheap supermarket bread. They have croissants, chocolate pastries, and ensaimadas, but they don't replenish them often, so be mindful of the time you go for breakfast!
-Third, if you know you'll be in high demand on the weekend, be aware that on Saturday they ran out of yogurt at 9:30 in the morning (for people who have yogurt with fruit and some cereal for breakfast), and there wasn't any left for that breakfast service or for Sunday breakfast either. Regarding the juice, we repeatedly asked them to refill it; it was boxed juice.
I must mention the friendliness of the girl who helped me at the computer.
I also want to highlight the quality of the coffee—very good!
And the views from the restaurant were spectacular!
Otherwise, the service was quite poor. Keep in mind that it's a 10-minute walk from the hotel to the restaurant; breakfast isn't served in the same room as your room.
Tips for Choosing the Perfect Hotel Near Peñíscola Castle
Selecting the right accommodation involves more than simply picking the closest property to the fortress. Your travel dates, mobility needs, and preferred atmosphere all play a role in determining which hotel will serve you best. The following practical recommendations draw on local knowledge and common guest feedback to help you avoid common booking mistakes and maximize your stay.
Book early for summer weekends and festival dates. Peñíscola hosts popular events such as the Medieval Fair in August and the international music festivals throughout the warmer months. Rooms near the castle sell out quickly during these periods, sometimes months in advance. Securing your reservation early gives you access to better rates and a wider choice of room categories.
Verify parking arrangements before you commit. If you are driving, confirm whether your hotel offers private parking, public parking nearby, or valet service. Many properties inside the old town cannot accommodate vehicles directly at the door, meaning you may need to use a municipal lot and walk with your bags. Knowing this in advance prevents stressful arrival moments.
Consider mobility and luggage access. The historic center is built on a hill with steep, uneven cobblestone streets. If you have limited mobility, heavy luggage, or are traveling with young children, a hotel on the flat beachfront promenade may be far more comfortable. The short extra walk to the castle is often worth the convenience.
Request a sea-view or castle-view room explicitly. Not all rooms within a hotel offer the same perspective. When booking, ask specifically for a room facing the castle or the Mediterranean. A private balcony overlooking the illuminated fortress at night is one of the most memorable aspects of staying in Peñíscola and is often worth the modest upgrade fee.
Read recent reviews about noise levels. Some charming old-town hotels sit above lively tapas bars or pedestrian thoroughfares that buzz late into the evening during summer. If you are a light sleeper, look for properties on quieter side streets or request a room on an upper floor away from the street. Modern beachfront hotels with double glazing tend to offer more consistent quiet.
Check seasonal amenities such as pools and heating. Many hotels with outdoor pools only operate them between June and September. Conversely, older buildings in the historic center may rely on portable heaters during the winter months. Match your expectations to the season, and do not assume every advertised amenity is available year-round.
Choosing the right hotel near Peñíscola Castle comes down to understanding how you want to experience this remarkable destination. A property in the old town immerses you in medieval atmosphere, while a beachfront stay offers modern comfort with postcard views of the fortress. Both approaches deliver unforgettable memories, provided you plan for practical details like parking and seasonal variations.
As you wander the ramparts where knights once stood guard and popes sought refuge, the right accommodation becomes more than a place to sleep. It becomes the quiet backdrop to your own Peñíscola story, a comfortable haven where the sea breeze and the castle’s ancient glow remind you why this corner of Spain has captivated travelers for centuries.
