Tours may be famous for its chΓ’teaux and Loire Valley wines, but the cityβs dining scene tells a much richer story. Over the years, a growing community of food lovers has turned this historic university town into a quiet powerhouse for halal cuisine. From bustling kebab houses near Place Plumereau to refined North African dining rooms, the options now go far beyond the usual quick-service fare.
Finding a genuinely good halal restaurant means looking beyond the sign on the door. It is about fresh ingredients, careful spicing, and a warm welcome that makes you want to linger over mint tea. Whether you live in Indre-et-Loire or are just passing through on a road trip, knowing where locals actually eat can save you from a forgettable meal.
This guide focuses on quality, consistency, and variety. You will find smoky grilled meats, slow-cooked tagines, Lebanese mezze, and even halal-friendly burgers that rival the best in the region. Each recommendation has been selected for its commitment to authentic flavors and reliable halal sourcing.
Tours has a compact city center, which means most of these spots are easy to reach on foot or by tram. That makes it simple to plan a food crawl or fit a great meal into a day of sightseeing. If you are tired of scanning menus and wondering about ingredients, this list removes the guesswork.
We have paid attention to practical details: family-friendly seating, late-night hours, and places that work well for a quick lunch. Because halal dining is about more than meat, you will also find vegetarian-friendly options and freshly baked breads that elevate the experience.
Use this as your starting point for exploring the best halal food Tours has to offer. The restaurants below reflect a mix of long-standing favorites and newer spots that have quickly built a loyal following.

Really enjoyed my Valentineβs Day meal here! Special menu. They accommodated us even after being full. Very sweet! Food was well seasoned. Kept true to its afghan roots but had French influence. Looking forward to going back to try the other dishes.

One of the best meals I've had in years, and by far the best one in Tours during my week long stay. I believe a meat eater would enjoy all the dishes we tried, and they did have a few meat items, but as a vegetarian in Tours this was a godsend. We had basically eaten nothing but cheese in various forms for three meals a day for the week here (which is not actually as great as it sounds), and were thrilled with the complex, delicious, healthy and filling options here. I walked away astounded by the food. Myself and another guest got the three course option each, so after trying 6 dishes plus their house blend Afghan tea, my mind is blown. Also, can recommend the Afghan primitivo wine, it was so good!
Do recommend reservations, but we were lucky to get a table for two without.
The ambiance is surprising given the outside appearance and it's location, what a cute oasis inside! Pictures don't do it justice.
The server was so gracious and kind with our French language barrier. He took the time to translate every item from Afghan/French to us, helped us identify what squash was in one of the dishes, told us his method of making the fabulous Firni dessert (to die for), and spoke to me about Afghan wine varietals, all through his own language barrier.
What a lovely date night, a meal I'll remember for a long time, and a welcome vegetarian's haven in this town. Would absolutely come here every time we're in town.

We were staying in Tours for two days. Right next to our hotel was an Afghan restaurant, which immediately caught my eye. My parents are from Afghanistan, and I grew up enjoying incredible Afghan food, so it has always held a special place in my heart.
Iβm happy to say this place exceeded my expectations. The meal brought back so many childhood memories, with all the distinctive flavors that make Afghan cuisine so special. What I especially loved was the French touch. It felt both authentic and elevated at the same time.
The service was warm and attentive, there were plenty of vegetarian options, it was nicely decorated and the location is very convenient, just a short walk from the train station.
Whether you're trying Afghan food for the first time or looking to reconnect with familiar flavors, this is a wonderful spot. Highly recommended! ππ

Itβs my 3rd time there. The 1st time the food was delicious, 2nd time - so/so. Went back again last night & the chicken was dried out. It took at least 30 minutes to get our dinner and we were the only people there. Other people arrived and they got theirs before we did. The server was unpleasant. She seemed very annoyed that we were even there. When we left all the other restaurants on the street were packed but they were not - easy to figure out why.

How to Choose the Right Halal Restaurant in Tours
A little planning goes a long way when you want a meal that matches your mood and budget. The following tips are based on how local diners evaluate halal restaurants in Tours. Whether you are looking for a quick bite or a relaxed dinner, these practical points will help you order with confidence.
Check the Certification and Sourcing
Not all halal restaurants display a certificate, but reputable owners are happy to answer questions about their meat supplier. Ask if the meat comes from a certified halal butcher or wholesaler. In Tours, many North African and Lebanese kitchens source directly from trusted regional suppliers. If a place is vague or defensive, it is usually better to move on.
Look Beyond the Standard Kebab
Kebabs are delicious, but Tours offers much more. Seek out tagines, grilled fish, shawarma plates, and Lebanese mezze. A menu with regional specialties often signals a kitchen that takes pride in its cooking. You will usually get better bread, fresher salads, and more careful seasoning at these spots.
Time Your Visit Strategically
Many halal restaurants in Tours fill up quickly between 12:30 and 1:30 PM on weekdays. Arrive early for lunch or after 2 PM for a quieter experience. For dinner, French dining culture means many kitchens do not open until 7 PM. If you are hungry earlier, check which places offer continuous service.
Watch for House-Made Bread and Sauces
The best halal restaurants make their own flatbreads, harissa, and garlic sauce. These small details transform a simple sandwich or grilled meat into something memorable. If you see bread being baked on-site or sauces made in small batches, you have likely found a kitchen that cares.
Ask About Family and Group Seating
Some smaller dining rooms in the old town have limited space for strollers or large groups. If you are traveling with family, call ahead or look for places with a terrace. Many restaurants around Place Plumereau and Rue Colbert offer outdoor seating in warmer months, which is ideal for relaxed group meals.
Consider Takeaway for Late Nights
Tours has a lively student population, so several halal spots stay open late, especially on weekends. If you are returning from a day trip to the chΓ’teaux, a takeaway shawarma or mixed grill can be the easiest option. Ask for extra pickles and garlic sauce, and enjoy it along the Loire riverbank.
The beauty of Tours is that you can eat very well without overcomplicating things. A simple grilled meat plate with fresh bread and a well-made sauce often beats an elaborate meal in a tourist-heavy area. Trust the places where the owner is present and the regulars are clearly known by name.
As the halal food scene continues to grow, the standard keeps rising. Chefs are drawing on French culinary technique while honoring the flavors of Morocco, Algeria, Lebanon, and beyond. That blend of influences makes eating halal in Tours a genuinely rewarding experience rather than a compromise.
