These spots are where Madrileños actually gather for their morning "café con leche" or an afternoon snack.

The best cafés in this area offer a blend of ambiance, history, and culinary quality. Whether you are looking for a quick espresso before touring the palace or a quiet corner to rest your feet with a slice of cake, the variety is impressive. You can find everything from century-old institutions to modern minimalist spaces championing third-wave coffee.

This guide focuses on venues that prioritize quality ingredients and authentic service. We had an amazing 3 course meal at the cafe! Honestly, we thought it would be pre-made, delivered and warmed up…it was wonderfully fresh, hot or appropriately chilled! The artichokes and ham and burrata salad were a wonderful start to the following courses. I had teriyaki salmon and my husband had the grilled pork. Both were delicious and hot off of the grill. Of course, we had to try the desserts and I’ve never tasted a better chocolate lava cake nice and warm to slowly melt the vanilla ice cream! Wow! Awesome! And my husband had the cheesecake with strawberry sauce that was better than my homemade recipe. But even better than the food was the friendly and swift wait staff. They worked together and with a smile! The cafe was a delightful surprise and highly recommend! Thank you for a lovely experience!

Service was great. Lost sunglasses in the taxi and they helped us out immensely with translating. Rocia and castarly are so awesome and sweet. Very thankful

It took half an hour to serve us our drinks and 1 hour to serve us our meal. When they served our meal they didn't know exactly what they were serving and they gave us too much because of this. 2 ladies weren't very friendly. There was a guy serving and he was very friendly but also didn't speak any English. The food was not very tasty because of a lack of herbs, but I do think they use fresh ingredients. The plates are too small if you are hungry. The Pacharan didn't taste like it should taste. Maybe there was water added, I don't know exactly. They served quite a lot of the Pacharan. The terrace looks nice next to the palace so the view is good.

The food was really good but the pizza was very dry and had no sauce.

Wonderful coffee at an affordable price! The taste of the cappuccino and flat white was smooth and delicate. Could not recommend this place more

Highly recommended. Excellent coffee and service. Small place, very basic, but cute touches. I bought, they ground, and I moka-potted the Elpidio - the result best Moka coffee I have ever had - by a huge margin.

Lovely little cafe with quirky furniture and insane coffee. Iykyk. Prices are so reasonable I had to ask him if he was only charging me for one coffee. He confirmed it was two.
Christina Henline★★★★★
Super cute little hidden cafe! They made the perfect oat milk cappuccinos and the orange cake was delicious!
Pedro Carvalheiro★★★★★
We ordered a large Flat White Latte and a large Cappuccino, both were absolutely delicious. The place has a cozy local vibe: many customers seemed to know each other, walked in with their dogs, and chatted casually. A great spot for anyone looking for quality coffee. They also offer beans from Brazil, Nicaragua, and Uganda, which shows their care for variety and origin.

Very beautiful cafeteria. Loved it! As I understood, the only thing they have and it's not vegan is the eggs, but they have vegan eggs as well, so I am not sure why they have eggs 😅. Great coffee, delicious tostadas and cakes, totally recommended place.

Awesome little place. Been there twice during a visit to Madrid over the weekend. Usually a big fan of coffee but I tried the iced matcha and banana bread. Don‘t order it if you‘re not hungry 😂 The slices are huge! Friendly staff and more than fairly priced for what you get.
Daniel Roures Rego★★★★★
I went to Dale Café for lunch today, and I loved everything I ate: the muhammara, the toast with cashew cheese and the dulce de leche cheesecake. Plus, I ordered a pistachio roscón de reyes, and it was absolutely delicious. The staff are super nice. Almost everything is vegan, including the roscón. I totally recommend this place.

A Hidden Gem for Specialty Coffee in Madrid ☕✨ On our last day in Madrid, we had zero plans and I really wanted good coffee, so I found this place on Google. It’s right in the center, but tucked away on a quiet uphill street, which made it so nice and peaceful. From the outside, it’s beautiful with warm yellow lights. Inside, it’s instantly cozy with a rustic wooden feel and quirky green and white tiles. It felt so incredibly homely, I wish I took more pictures, but I was enjoying my latte and food! The Food & Coffee 🥑 Everything was served on the most beautiful plates. We got: Avocado Toast: The avocado was so creamy with a generous drizzle of olive oil. That freshness and rich oil cut through the sourdough perfectly. The bread was really good. Artichoke & sundried tomato toast: The artichoke spread was perfect and a little garlicky (which I love!). It was topped with sundried tomatoes, and that slight sourness cut through the creamy garlic flavour perfectly. The cakes looked so tempting, but since I'm a vegetarian and don't eat eggs, I had to skip them. For drinks, we both got the Almond Latte (mine with almond milk, his with regular). It was honestly perfect, so smooth, not too sweet since I got mine sugarless, and it had the best texture. Mine was even topped with a pretty pattern and little flowers! Service was a little slow, but only because one person was running the entire cafe. It wasn’t too busy, just about three tables occupied. It’s super family-friendly, and I’m guessing pet-friendly too (especially with that cute dog logo on the window!). Such a warm, wonderful experience.
Vibhore Singh★★★★★
Had a lovely experience at El Perro de Pavlov Café. The people working there were incredibly humble, kind, and welcoming, which made us feel right at home. The service was a little slow, but honestly, we weren't in any rush and it was clear that only one or two people were running the place and doing their absolute best. Considering that, we really appreciated the effort and care they put into serving everyone. The coffee and food were great, and the atmosphere was relaxed and cozy. It's the kind of place where you can slow down, enjoy your time, and feel genuinely looked after. We'll definitely be back.
Ceylin Doğan★★★★★
I had the garlic-rubbed tomato toast and orange juice and they were amazing! The toast has only garlic and tomato(if you want you can add cheese and ham), its simple but how can this be so delicious?? Also service was great, she was friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend!
Emelie★★★★★
Easily the best place for coffee and breakfast/lunch in La Latina. We’ve been here multiple times over the last couple of months. Staff is super friendly and food is great and well made.

This place is located at a super nice and very tranquil plaza in the heart of Madrid. I didn’t get a chance to sit down because it was packed. Outside and inside. And people were already queuing up for a table. But everything I saw looked delicious. But I just got a cappuccino to go. And it was very good. One of the best cappuccinos I had in Madrid.

Cute coffee shop that had great coffee and some decent breakfast options! It’s a great place to take a break and enjoy some great coffee! The food was decent for the price. This was our first cafe after landing in Madrid and it did not disappoint! I highly recommend this place if you want something quick and easy!

Highly recommend - amazing coffee, the food was delicious and the staff are lovely. Returned multiple times throughout my stay in Madrid. It is located in a very quiet corner but still in a central location.

All the food was really really good. Their gluten free bread was some of the best I've ever had (they buy it from Laib Madrid, a bakery nearby). Pretty spacious which is nice if you have a stroller but it does have a couple steps without a ramp. Highly recommended place

Lovely cafe with lovely personnel! Enjoyed a small breakfast and top of that a Patal de Nata. Which was actually good, since the person who makes them is from Porto! Coffee is great, not a lot of space and on busy days the visit could be up to 30 minutes top.

One of the best breakfasts in Madrid! Over a 5 day holiday I came here twice, and both times I was very pleased! The coffee is fantastic, service is fast and friendly, the atmosphere in the shop is great - and to top it off, the food is unbeatable! Great pastries, and delicious sandwiches! I’d recommend the Tostada Reina Pepiada - one of the best toasts I’ve had! A must visit for anyone looking for good breakfast in Madrid.

Lovely breakfast spot in Lavapies. The coffee was good too. The plaza is always lively, specially suring the street markets on the weekend.

The vibe of this place is truly outstanding. I really enjoyed it — it just resonates with me. The service was fine; nothing unpleasant happened during my visit. The serving time was short, and the prices for coffee and cake, considering it’s the capital city, are quite reasonable. I’m honestly surprised by the number of negative reviews. Coffe was a little bit sour for my taste but I enjoyed it. Overall, it feels soothing and cozy, a place where you naturally want to slow down and stay a little longer.

Cozy and aesthetically pleasing place. There’s no Wi-Fi or phone service, which can be inconvenient but it also encourages you to disconnect and actually connect with the people around you. The cheesecake was delicious, but the red velvet cake was the standout. we loved it so much that we ordered another one.

Lovely cafe. Very beautifully decorated. I ate a toast that was amazing. 10/10 Great vibes, calm and comfortable.
Rana Soltani★★☆☆☆
Unfortunately, I wasn’t satisfied with my experience here. When we arrived, the upstairs area was full, so they suggested we sit downstairs. We agreed, but the downstairs area had a very strong artificial air freshener smell, probably because of humidity or something nearby. The smell was overwhelming and honestly uncomfortable to breathe. The lighting downstairs was also extremely dim and unpleasant. Most of the chairs and sofas didn’t feel very stable or comfortable either. I actually had to change my chair because it felt loose and unsafe. The coffee arrived spilled into the saucer, and the sugar packet next to it was wet and unusable. The staff also didn’t really speak English, which made communication a bit difficult. On top of that, the cake I ordered arrived much later than the coffee, so by the time it came, my drink was already almost cold. That said, the cake itself and the nachos we ordered tasted good. But unfortunately, the coffee was not memorable at all, and overall the experience was disappointing.

Ok Luz is a VIBE. Grandma core. Couches and mismatched furniture. Candle light energy. The cappuccino was funnnn. The toast was good. They only let you sit in the main area if you get food, but the food is good & cheap. The bar is also cute. I sat here and journaled 🙂

The food was excellent. We had the cannelloni with beef, pumpkin purée, and béchamel sauce, as well as the special with jamón, baby potatoes, and cheese. For an appetizer, we ordered fried calamari with aioli and lemon. Everything was fresh, tender, and very flavorful. We shared the dishes between three people and left completely full. We were also served bread with butter, almonds, and hummus. The accompaniments were nice, but the bread was very cold—almost like airplane bread. Warming it up would make a noticeable difference. The restaurant also offered us truffles for dessert, which were delicious and a very thoughtful touch that elevated the overall experience. Prices are slightly on the higher side, but the portions are generous. The service was professional, and the location is excellent, with a view of the palace. The only downside was that the staff did not speak English at all, although this seems to be something you may encounter in many places across Madrid.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Every time I come to Madrid, it’s impossible not to visit Café de Oriente. It has become one of my absolute favorite places. The food is always excellent, the atmosphere is elegant, and the location is simply stunning. A special thank you to Daniel for his exceptional service. He is professional, attentive, warm, and always makes every visit feel special. His hospitality is one of the reasons I keep coming back. I highly recommend Café de Oriente to anyone visiting Madrid. I can’t wait for my next visit!

Had a great experience at Café de Oriente for a special birthday dinner in a gorgeous private room. The waiters assigned to us specifically were amazing and so was the food, which was both of great quality and variety, and adapted to everyone's needs!
Bin B★☆☆☆☆
Excellent location, but the waiters have a pitiful attitude. No customer service or pleasantries ( note the waiter in the picture specifically but not just him ! ) are involved with taking your overpriced order. Definitely won't return !
Grete Larsen Meyer★★★☆☆
Great location and excellent service, but the food needs improvement. This is a lovely spot for lunch, offering beautiful views of the Royal Palace. The menu and wine list are both very good. We ordered two different paellas, one black and one white. The rice was flavorful and cooked perfectly, with an excellent texture. However, both dishes were notably lacking in seafood. A great paella should be overflowing with fish and shellfish, but here the dishes consisted of about 80% rice. A venue with such a prime location, attentive service, and elegant surroundings deserves a stronger kitchen.

An excellent bakery near Plaza del Opera on a quiet street. Chef Trabanco is a true craftsman. His creations are beautiful and expertly prepared. So good with the perfect balance of flavors and texture. And he's a super nice guy! The bakery itself is a nice quiet spot away from the tourist spots (and the tourists).

Inside Santa Eulalia gives you the feeling like being in “little Paris”, with cozy old-world decor, books, plants, and exposed brick walls. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you can really feel the care behind the place. The pastries and breads are clearly top quality, made with great ingredients and a lot of attention to detail. I had an excellent cortado with a DELICIOUS hazelnuts bun, the cakes and the breads looked incredible. Service was very friendly and English speaking. The space is quite spacious and with WiFi so you can enjoy the coffee and the pastries and also work there.

Excellent place to enjoy a sweet and also they have brunch with eggs! The sweets are just incredible! (Especially pain au chocolates with pistachio and chocolate) Also coffee was good and eggs were really good portion! Totally recommended!
Dhoha Rashed Alshalawi★★★★☆
Loved the sweets, but not the coffee. The cappuccino didn’t taste like a proper cappuccino—it was more like instant coffee and lacked foam. The coffee bar could be more organized and cleaner, especially since the main seating area is right in front of it. On the positive side, the staff are sweet, kind, and provide good service. The decoration and overall vibe of the place are authentic, and the location is great.

We had a wonderful experience at Vienna Capellanes in Madrid. The food was delicious, the menu of the day offered great variety and excellent value, and everything was served quickly and efficiently. We especially want to thank Katherine, who took care of us with truly exceptional service. She was warm, attentive, professional, and made us feel genuinely welcome. This place is amazing! I tried both the Bolivian and the Indian espresso they had to offer and they were perfect shots. There was not a hint of bitterness and I was truly able to enjoy the notes of the coffee. I also had to try their cinnamon roll and it was baked perfectly. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed visiting with them and learning more about their coffee. They also roast their own coffee which is such an amazing thing. This place is a must visit for coffee lovers in Madrid!

Good coffee but skip the Turkish eggs, it was the worst I have eaten in the city. Not with poached or soft boiled egg, it was almost a raw egg, no salt or herbs, tasteless sauce. Couldn’t eat it

Tips for Enjoying Cafés Near Catedral de la Almudena

The area surrounding the cathedral operates on a distinctly Spanish rhythm, and knowing a few local customs can significantly enhance your experience. While many of these cafés welcome tourists, understanding when and how to order will help you blend in and get the best service. Here are some practical tips to make the most of your coffee break in this historic part of Madrid.

1. Mind the Spanish coffee schedule.
Spaniards typically drink coffee at specific times: first thing in the morning, after lunch (around 4 PM), and sometimes after dinner. Cafés are often busiest during these windows. If you want a quieter experience, visit mid-morning or late afternoon between the rush hours.

2. Know your coffee terms.
While many places have English menus, knowing the basics helps. "Café solo" is an espresso, "café con leche" is half coffee and half hot milk, and "cortado" is an espresso with just a splash of milk. If you want a larger, weaker coffee, ask for an "Americano."

3. Eat standing at the bar or pay for the table.
In many traditional Spanish cafés, prices change depending on where you consume your order. The "barra" (counter) is always the cheapest option. Sitting at a "mesa" (table) often incurs a small surcharge, especially on terraces with views of the cathedral.

4. Don’t skip the savory pastries.
While cakes are popular, the true local breakfast or snack is savory. Look for "tostada con tomate" (toast with crushed tomato and olive oil) or a "pincho de tortilla" (a slice of Spanish omelet). These pair perfectly with a strong espresso.

5. Carry a bit of cash.
While most modern specialty coffee shops accept cards, some of the smaller, older family-run bakeries and traditional bars near the cathedral may have a minimum spend for card payments or prefer cash. Having a €10 or €20 note ensures you won’t miss out on a hidden gem.

Exploring the café scene near Catedral de la Almudena is about more than just caffeine; it is a cultural immersion. Stepping into a historic bar with tiled walls and marble counters offers a glimpse into Madrid’s daily life that you simply cannot get from the main tourist thoroughfares. Taking the time to sit down, rather than grabbing a cup to go, allows you to appreciate the pace of the city.

As you plan your visit, remember that the best experiences often lie just outside the immediate shadow of the monument. By wandering a few extra minutes into the adjacent neighborhoods, you will find the authentic flavors and warm hospitality that define Madrid. Enjoy your coffee, and take your time soaking in the atmosphere of one of Europe’s most regal districts.
