Sitting just across from the Royal Palace, the area surrounding the Catedral de la Almudena is one of the most historically rich districts in Madrid. While the neighborhood is famous for its royal landmarks and steep hills, it is also a surprisingly vibrant hub for specialty coffee. Finding a quality flat white or a perfectly pulled espresso here requires knowing which winding side streets to explore.
Many visitors assume that the closest options to the cathedral will be overpriced tourist traps serving burnt beans. However, the resurgence of Madrid’s specialty coffee scene has brought artisan roasters and passionate baristas into the very heart of the old city. You just need to know where to look to avoid the generic cafés and find the hidden gems.
This guide focuses on walkable spots where quality, atmosphere, and service are prioritized. Whether you need a quick takeaway before touring the palace or a cozy corner to rest your legs, there is a brew for you nearby. We have evaluated these locations based on bean sourcing, barista expertise, and consistency.
Because the terrain here includes some steep inclines toward La Latina and the Viaduct, we have focused on accessibility. Every café listed below is within a comfortable walking distance of the cathedral steps. You won’t need to hail a taxi or take the metro just to get a caffeine fix.
The selection ranges from minimalist Nordic-style coffee bars to traditional Spanish roasters who have modernized their approach. You will find options for alternative milks, single-origin pour-overs, and even specialty teas. No matter your preference, the goal is to keep you away from the stale pastries and bitter coffee often found directly on the main plazas.
We have also considered the need for a quick bite. Many of these spots offer excellent pastries, toasts, or cakes that pair perfectly with their beverages. Starting your morning here with a local pastry and a well-made cortado is one of the best ways to experience Madrid like a local.
Below, you will find the definitive list of the best coffee shops near the cathedral, followed by practical tips for ordering like a pro.

Your friendly coffee shop around the corner 🙂 The space is so limited so you need to early to get seat, coffee's and service is excellent. I went there 3 times (basically 3 nights in madrid) in a row and i felt like home. If you can able to pay cash you can get %6 discount on top of the bill or you can pay with your credit card. I mostly paid around 10-12 euro-ish depending my order. 1 americano coffee (with great cream) + meal. You can also order fresh cakes, croissants too. People who working in the coffee is so nice and talkative and good ambient music all day.

Lovely spot to stop for a latte and tomato toast. Very friendly atmosphere and they were kind when my spanish wasn’t great, haha. Around 9:30am on a Thursday I was able to sit and people-watch! Thank you. We came back twice!!
Pretty small place so I recommend takeaway unless you are a party of 4 or less
Helena Fombella★★★★★
Top-tier spot in the neighborhood for a quick grab-and-go 🍵
Stopped by for a takeaway coco matcha and the execution was spot on: brilliant green hue, velvety microfoam with crisp latte art, and that balanced, clean sweetness without any gritty texture at the bottom.
The space itself is cozy and well-equipped (solid La Marzocco setup on the counter, great selection of single-origin beans, and freshly baked pastries lined up) 🥐
Fast service, precise temperature, and zero fluff. Definitely a reliable daily stop if you care about beverage quality. 🍃

The staff were friendly, and the dishes served were very tasty. If you like good bread and coffee, this place is definitely worth checking out.
I enjoyed the tomato awokado toast most!
The name really charmed me as well — an extra plus for that!

one of my favorite cafes! Excellent chai & matcha and all of their pastries are delicious - choco croissant & pan suisse alwaaays hit the spot 👌🏼

My favourite Cold Brew in Madrid, just the absolute best. Also one of my favourite coffee places in Madrid. If you are looking for a perfect cup every time, head here. My only hesitation is that sometimes the staff seem a bit unfriendly.

Cute little café with a bakery next to it. It was cozy to sit outside on a sunny day, enjoy good coffee, and just relax. The service was good and fast, especially considering there was only one person working.
Abijah Nomis★★★★★
Delicious cappuccino!! The cappuccino comes in S, M, or L which I found strange but I got a M and it seemed to be a typical cappuccino size. Beans perfectly roasted, very sweet, the milk foam was also perfect. The barista spoke English and was friendly. Provided the WiFi password which I appreciated.
Not much seating but the interior is very cute and with good chill music, it has great vibes if you can get a spot! I bought two bags of coffee to go, the beans were that good. Wish I were staying in Madrid longer so I could come back!
RV★★★★★
The iced latte here was excellent and remarkably good, can highly recommend going here for great coffee. The space for seating is very limited but still worth a visit.

This tiny hole-in-the-wall is serving main-character energy. The coffee? Freaking amazing. Like, “why am I still thinking about it hours later” amazing. And do yourself a favor—get the salted cream Oolong tea. It’s dangerously good and absolutely not optional.
The waffle/croissant situation? OMG. Crispy, fluffy, buttery perfection that has no business being that good. And the sandwich?? Literally famazingly flavorful and delicious, every bite understood the assignment.
Proof that the best food comes from the smallest places. Cozy, unassuming, and straight-up some of the most delicious food I’ve had. Enter hungry. Leave obsessed.

Found the ultimate spot for matcha lovers! 🍵✨ The matcha here has that rich, earthy notes blended so smoothly with milk, not too sweet at all, just pure, creamy perfection.
The vibe of the café is super cozy, making it a great place to chill or get some work done. If you're a matcha fan, definitely need to check this out! 💚🌿
Michael Huynh★★★★★
Coffee so good I had to ask where they got it from! The staff were so cute and nice they even sold a packet of their coffee for me to try myself! Really recommend the coffee and it was nice that there was an option to choose the sugar levels for the matcha as I’m used to it either being really sweet or not sweet at all.

Cafe is cozy and welcoming. Staffs are friendly. I’ve tried iced pistachio matcha and iced strawberry matcha. Both are delicious.

Homely atmosphere and solid coffee. It seems to me that not much has been invested in the interior, they are in a nice location and in a beautiful building.

Absolutely incredible service, I was welcomed very warmly and everything I ate and drank here was amazing. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner! 10/10.
Gustavo Garcia★★★★★
Amazing team running this coffee shop! Service is one of the best in the area. While it is a very touristy location, many of us that live around here frequent it for our daily coffee/breakfast.
They have amazing food options and coffee. If the weather is nice you can also sit outside.
They are very flexible and accommodating if you need to work a bit on your laptop and they are also dog friendly!
Adéla Krůčková★☆☆☆☆
They clearly have preferred customers, and if you’re not a local, they make it obvious.
I’m not reviewing the food, but the service. Our first visit was good, which is why we came back.
It was busy, so we chose to wait for a table. We asked the staff if we could reserve a table once one became available, but we were told no and that we had to wait until a table was free. So we waited outside the restaurant for about half an hour. When a table finally became available, we sat down.
The same staff member then came over and told us the table was actually reserved. He had been holding it for two women who arrived after us and were seated inside. Another table was about to become free, so I went to move there. At the moment I was sitting down and my partner had gone to the restroom, a woman from a nearby table came over and took a chair from our table. The staff did nothing about it, said nothing to her, and only apologized to us, telling us to wait another 20 minutes until something else became available.
So after waiting for more than half an hour and seeing two tables become free, we still didn’t get to eat. I would have appreciated a better approach from the staff. If you say that tables cannot be reserved, you shouldn’t then ask me to leave a table I’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, a big disappointment.

Highly recommended. Excellent coffee and service. Small place, very basic, but cute touches.
I bought, they ground, and I moka-potted the Elpidio - the result best Moka coffee I have ever had - by a huge margin.

Lovely little cafe with quirky furniture and insane coffee. Iykyk. Prices are so reasonable I had to ask him if he was only charging me for one coffee. He confirmed it was two.

Super cute little hidden cafe! They made the perfect oat milk cappuccinos and the orange cake was delicious!

We ordered a large Flat White Latte and a large Cappuccino, both were absolutely delicious. The place has a cozy local vibe: many customers seemed to know each other, walked in with their dogs, and chatted casually. A great spot for anyone looking for quality coffee. They also offer beans from Brazil, Nicaragua, and Uganda, which shows their care for variety and origin.

The worse coffee I had in Madrid, had a late with oat milk, barely a faint taste of coffee, milky color and just literally oat milk. . Iced version was better. Can’t explain the reviews . Had also a cookie which was fine . Only take away option.

I love visiting local coffee shops and I am glad I stopped by!
Not only did the barista create a great oatmilk latte, but she was nice, friendly and happy to explain any other coffee drinks.
The girl by the stand was not as nice or attentive, but the barista made it worthwhile! Thanks for making a great latte for a long day!
Taoufik Mirkhan★☆☆☆☆
The cappuccino was disappointing. The steamed milk seemed to be poured straight into the cup without proper barista technique, resulting in an unbalanced texture, either overly foamy or too watery, rather than the smooth, creamy consistency expected from a cappuccino.

Cute chain coffee shop, can find other locations in the city and in Barcelona. Nice that they are opened a bit later than other coffee shops in the area. Very god cold brew.

Completely stumbled upon this place in the Madrid rain - so glad I did!!! Lovely quiet little coffee shop not too far from Palacio Real, with lovely staff and a great iced matcha latte.

It opens early, making it a great place for breakfast with coffee. 👍 One coffee per dessert was a must 😂, but it was so sweet and delicious. 😍 (I envy the atmosphere where dogs come into the cafe without any problem… All the dogs I met by chance at the cafe were well-trained, quiet, and cute. 😍)

We’re visiting from the US and this was a recommendation from a local. Coffee is delicious. We got the chicken sandwich to split and it was a perfect portion to hold us over for lunchtime. You have to order at the register/counter everyone is super friendly. They have an English menu which is helpful. After you order at the register/counter, you can sit anywhere and they bring the food over to you. Would highly recommend checking it out. Great vibe in here.

Tastiest cortado I’ve had in my life. Great balance. I could actually taste the brightness and acidity of the espresso. Friendly staff. Cool space to hang out in. Prices are a little high but totally worth it if you’re looking for a premium coffee experience.

Great coffee place for a quick coffee and a snack. Nice vibes and friendly people.
The avocado toast was simple and very tasty.
Good prices as well

Our first breakfast in Madrid and it was a good choice. Both the bagel and the bread with egg were fresh and tasty. The portions aren't the biggest, but they're fine. The barista knows his coffee, was friendly and will definitely recommend good beans to anyone. Filter coffee is made using an xbloom machine, which is an interesting fact. They also have really good tea. It’s a popular place, but it’s a good one.
Oleg Shestakov★★★★★
Great place to stop for a specialty coffee near the palace. I really enjoyed the Geisha hand brew. It’s on the pricier side at around 9€, but the beans are worth it. It was ripe and full of juicy flavor. I loved it. I was too slow to take a picture of the flat white, but it was made to a high standard with great milk temperature and texture. I definitely recommend this place for coffee enthusiasts!

A Hidden Gem for Specialty Coffee in Madrid ☕✨
On our last day in Madrid, we had zero plans and I really wanted good coffee, so I found this place on Google. It’s right in the center, but tucked away on a quiet uphill street, which made it so nice and peaceful.
From the outside, it’s beautiful with warm yellow lights. Inside, it’s instantly cozy with a rustic wooden feel and quirky green and white tiles. It felt so incredibly homely, I wish I took more pictures, but I was enjoying my latte and food!
The Food & Coffee 🥑
Everything was served on the most beautiful plates. We got:
Avocado Toast: The avocado was so creamy with a generous drizzle of olive oil. That freshness and rich oil cut through the sourdough perfectly. The bread was really good.
Artichoke & sundried tomato toast: The artichoke spread was perfect and a little garlicky (which I love!). It was topped with sundried tomatoes, and that slight sourness cut through the creamy garlic flavour perfectly.
The cakes looked so tempting, but since I'm a vegetarian and don't eat eggs, I had to skip them.
For drinks, we both got the Almond Latte (mine with almond milk, his with regular). It was honestly perfect, so smooth, not too sweet since I got mine sugarless, and it had the best texture. Mine was even topped with a pretty pattern and little flowers!
Service was a little slow, but only because one person was running the entire cafe. It wasn’t too busy, just about three tables occupied. It’s super family-friendly, and I’m guessing pet-friendly too (especially with that cute dog logo on the window!). Such a warm, wonderful experience.
Vibhore Singh★★★★★
Had a lovely experience at El Perro de Pavlov Café. The people working there were incredibly humble, kind, and welcoming, which made us feel right at home. The service was a little slow, but honestly, we weren't in any rush and it was clear that only one or two people were running the place and doing their absolute best. Considering that, we really appreciated the effort and care they put into serving everyone.
The coffee and food were great, and the atmosphere was relaxed and cozy. It's the kind of place where you can slow down, enjoy your time, and feel genuinely looked after. We'll definitely be back.
Ceylin Doğan★★★★★
I had the garlic-rubbed tomato toast and orange juice and they were amazing! The toast has only garlic and tomato(if you want you can add cheese and ham), its simple but how can this be so delicious?? Also service was great, she was friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend!

Very nice staff and good espresso. However, there’s 2 chairs and no outdoor seating. Additionally, there’s no restroom or anything. Also, the options are very limited. If you’re looking for a simple grab and go coffee, this would work for you. If you’re looking for sit down, work, or chat, do not come here.
Chris Zhu★★☆☆☆
I don’t know who is the barista making all the nice coffee from other reviews, but my cappuccino looks like from an automatic machine. Service is good, nice staffs, cozy tiny place (no bathroom). But the coffee tastes like 95% milk, guess people here prefer milky coffee.

Visited Syra Coffee Santa Isabel and really loved the vibe—cozy, simple, and the coffee quality stands out.
I tried their Pumpkin Spice Latte and it was great: the pumpkin flavor was clear but not overpowering, and the spices were perfectly balanced, giving it this warm, comforting taste. Honestly one of the nicest seasonal drinks I’ve tried.
Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the area.

So glad I stumbled on this little cafe! It's tucked away in a cool, quiet corner just away from the plaza-- perfect if you're feeling a little overstimulated from the crowds of tourists, or just want to get out of the sun for a few minutes. The owner was very kind, and the coffee was delicious and super fairly priced (half the price of a bigger cafe down the road!); it's recommended to pay by card unless you have exact change. Very warm and cozy inside, with a strong coffee vibe.
I really liked the gramophone inside — it adds a lot of character.
Both cheesecakes, the pistachio and the classic one, were terrific: very soft, almost melting inside. The matcha cake was also soft and tasty, and I’m glad I gave it a try.

Our barista prepared the coffee with so much care. I wish I had watched the whole process, but I caught the final touch of pistachio being sprinkled on top... It tasted amazing! We also ordered the strawberry cake which was so delicate and not overly sweet...absolute perfection. Thank you!
Tips for Enjoying Coffee Near the Cathedral
Understanding the local coffee culture will significantly enhance your experience. The area around the Almudena is busy, and the rhythm of service can differ from what you might expect at home. Use these insights to blend in and get the best cup possible.
Know your roast profile. Spanish coffee has traditionally been heavily roasted (torrefacto), but the specialty shops on this list use lighter, fruitier beans. If you prefer a classic, intense flavor, order a "cortado" or ask for a bean with chocolatey notes.
Timing is everything. Avoid the rush between 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM on weekends. If you want a quiet seat, visit right at opening time or during the late afternoon siesta lull when many tourists are eating lunch.
Don’t expect large to-go cups. In Madrid, coffee culture is about sitting and enjoying the moment. While most shops offer takeaway, the standard size is smaller than an American "Venti." Order a "doble" (double shot) if you need extra caffeine.
Look for the roaster. The best cafés will display the name of the roaster they use, whether it is a local Madrid brand or an international import. This transparency is a strong indicator of quality and freshness.
Pair it with a local treat. Skip the generic croissant and look for "tarta de queso" (Basque cheesecake) or "pan de chocolate." Many specialty shops in Madrid have elevated their pastry game to match their coffee standards.
Carry cash for small purchases. While most modern cafés accept cards, some smaller artisan spots have a minimum spend for card payments. A few euros in coins will make your transaction smoother.
The area surrounding the Catedral de la Almudena offers a unique contrast between ancient architecture and modern culinary craft. By stepping just one block away from the main tourist thoroughfares, you can find a quiet moment of respite with a world-class beverage. The baristas in this neighborhood are proud of their craft and are usually happy to explain the origin of their beans.
Whether you are fueling up for a long day of sightseeing or winding down after exploring the Royal Palace, these coffee shops provide the perfect backdrop. Take your time, soak in the atmosphere, and enjoy the distinct pleasure of a great coffee in one of Madrid’s most beautiful settings.
