Girona’s coffee culture has quietly evolved into one of the most exciting in Catalonia. While the city is famous for its medieval architecture, Game of Thrones filming locations, and the colourful houses along the Onyar River, a new generation of baristas is adding a modern sensory layer to the visitor experience. The specialty coffee scene here balances traditional Spanish café customs with contemporary roasting techniques.
Unlike Barcelona, where you can easily spend an hour crossing the city between cafés, Girona’s compact historic core makes café-hopping a genuine pleasure. Within a ten-minute walk, you can transition from a sun-drenched plaza in the Barri Vell to a minimalist industrial space in the modern shopping district. This density allows visitors to experience a wide range of brewing styles without sacrificing time spent exploring the city’s cultural landmarks.
The local approach to coffee prioritizes quality over speed. You will find fewer grab-and-go paper cups and more ceramic mugs, carefully poured latte art, and baristas who are willing to explain the origin of their single-origin beans. Many of the best spots source their beans from local Catalan roasters, creating a tight-knit community that values traceability and sustainable farming practices.
For the visitor, this means that coffee is no longer just a caffeine fix before visiting the cathedral. It is an integral part of understanding the city’s modern gastronomic identity. Whether you are a digital nomad looking for reliable Wi-Fi, a specialty coffee enthusiast hunting for a rare Geisha varietal, or simply someone who wants a perfectly textured flat white, Girona has a table waiting for you.
However, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. Not every café with a beautiful façade serves a balanced espresso, and some of the best brews are hidden down narrow stone alleyways with minimal signage. Knowing where to go saves you from mediocre cups and ensures you experience the true craftsmanship the city has to offer.
We have analyzed the local scene based on bean quality, barista expertise, atmosphere, and consistency. The following selection represents the most reliable and distinctive coffee experiences in the city right now, ranging from pioneer roasters to cozy neighborhood favorites.
Here are the twelve best coffee shops currently defining Girona’s vibrant caffeine landscape.

Fantastic coffee and a wonderful atmosphere! The aroma coming from the roastery immediately attracted us, and we’re so glad we stopped by. The place is beautiful, clean, and very inviting. They offer a great variety of coffees, giving you the chance to explore different flavors and find your favorite. Everything we tried was excellent, and the quality of the coffee was outstanding. A must-visit for any coffee lover!
Dorsa Sol★★★★☆
A clean and cozy café. It was refreshing to finally see good latte art in Spain, as most places just mix milk and coffee. We had a palmerita on the side, which was quite average, but the coffee itself was delicious.
The portion size was small and the price relatively high, but it was still worth trying, especially if, like me, you love a nice layer of foam on your coffee.
Jord S★★★★★
Great arabica coffee coming from freshly roasted beans! Pastries are fresh too and I appreciate that they care so much about the details -- for example, this cinnamon roll with edible mini gold paint details and the generous muscovado used with the cinnamon! Kind employees and the place is clean and well maintained. There's a bike tire pump free for all the cycling customers dropping by for coffee. Famous place for early bird athletes too! Indoor and outdoor seating available.
Lily Alemany★★★★☆
Good coffee. It was served quickly. The place is very well decorated. In the short time we were there, several cyclists came and went, so it is a great spot for cyclists too.

I’ve been coming here twice a day for the past three days during my stay in Girona, and honestly, this is some of the best coffee I’ve had in a long time. The quality is consistently amazing — rich, well-balanced, and made with real care.
But what makes this place truly special is the staff, especially Alexa. She is incredibly kind, welcoming, and genuinely warm. You can feel that they truly enjoy what they do. On my last day, when I told them my trip was ending and I was heading back, they surprised me with a free coffee because I had been coming regularly. Such a small gesture, but it meant a lot.
Great coffee, beautiful atmosphere, and exceptional service. A must-visit in Girona for any coffee lover.

Ok by far the best coffee I have had in Girona city. Great coffee and made to perfection.
The staff is also super nice, so since I cannot find a fault: it is a 5/5 for me. They have great oat milk too.
Thank you and will most definitely come back!

I was staying in a hotel right down the road from Originem and decided to pop in for a light lunch and coffee. I ended up having the “Italian salad” and an iced matcha with lavender. Both were fantastic! The atmosphere and location are also great!!
Liudmyla Onopriichuk★★★★★
Such a great café. I would definitely recommend it and revisit. The ambiance is superb, and the table on the balcony is absolutely gorgeous. My matcha latte cost 6 euros and was pretty fine. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful.

This is by far the coolest coffee shop I have ever been too! Sweet staff and amazing drinks! 10/10! Also have the cutest stickers too. I would travel back from the states to be here!

What a wonderfully cozy little cafe, tucked away off the beaten path in the old central part of Girona. Artsy atmosphere, great music, LP by LP no less! Great coffee and menu, and delightful owners, English and Belgian. Superb.
Ric Tse★★★★★
Amazing food and coffee for an affordable price. Had the steak sandwich for 15 euros. Vibe, energy, and design of the shop was amazing. Also had a nice chat with the owner Jacob who was very nice and helpful with tips for Girona. Would come back.
Amber Mondalek★★★★★
We had an excellent experience here, especially the shakshuka. Ours was incredible, we scraped the dish clean and ate it so fast we forgot to take a photo.
We also had toast, three kids’ pancakes they even let us add bacon to one, tea, and a flat white, and everything was excellent.
Idle Hands Girona feels like a true hidden gem, it was really hidden. It’s run by a local husband and wife, and the space has real personality, with a mural painted by the wife that gives it a creative vibe. Definitely worth it.
Onnn★★★★☆
Had the Chai Latte and Pancakes. The Chai Latte was a bit too sweet for my liking. The pancakes were delicious and had great complexity in flavor, though they were also on the sweeter side. Perfect if you have a sweet tooth!

Google has a funny way of showing directions. It kept telling me and my sister to walk through walls to get to this restaurant. We kept walking in circles for almost half an hour but I’m glad we didn’t give up. This is my first time ever having eggs Benedict because I hate English muffins but the eggs Benedict at Idle Hands is served on a hearty toast. I had mine with ham. The Hollandaise sauce was creamy and delicious . I’m still dreaming of this breakfast and I’m afraid that every other eggs Benedict after this will be a disappointment. Oh, the coconut olive bread. Oh my god, I loved the coconut topping. It reminded me of a childhood treat so I was even more in love with this place after having dessert.

Incredible food. Wicked setting slightly out of the hustle and bustle, giving it a charm thats worth enjoying. Great coffee. Best veggy options of our trip by far, and just delicious. The pulled pork bagel was apparently the best bagel my boyfriend has ever had. Portions are generous. Staff pleasant. 100% recommend.

Wonderful spot for breakfast, brunch or lunch. So happy we found this spot- beautiful outdoor seating under giant umbrellas of shade and adorable inside locations available too, exquisite menu of local, healthy ingredients. So many coffee options like flat whites and refreshing drinks like orange and ginger zinger or the iced mango matcha. Avocado toasts and the banana nutter butter were perfect to share, next time I’d like to try one of the power bowls. Service is so friendly and prompt, you order at the counter then they bring it to you. Simple and wonderful! A must try in Girona
Jenaya Lukey★★★★★
Wow!!! Probably one of favorite brunch spots of all time. The atmosphere and food is unbeatable. Bagels were the size of my head!! So delicious. The dirty iced chai was the best I’ve ever had! Great food and great ingredients.

Adored this place! Excellent service, excellent food, and cosy inside, but also fab little tables outside. If sun is shining and it is too full one can preorder coffee etc and take a number, grab a cushion from cafe box and sit on medieval steps of the street waiting in the sun for the table to free up. I had fabulous Boss brunch of omelette, avocado, salad greens, sundried tomatoes etc. Don't miss their coffee and fresh orange & ginger juice.

Awesome little café in Gtown! Good selection of roasters and the definition of doing a lot with a little. Yannick and his crew do an excellent job brewing and serving coffee at a really high level. Was very very grateful to find this place and then enjoyed coffee here everyday.

One of very few places I know, where you do actually celebrate the time you are there. The life slows down and you can forget the world for a few minutes😇
Super kind staff!
Finally, the best coffee in the world is just a bonus when visiting this place ☕️

¡Un lugar increíble con excelente café y personal también! I could choose beans between Brazil and Etiopia. I took a cup of flatwhite with oat milk and it was delicious:) Onle one thing it’s a really small place so there are not a lot of spots for sitting:( However if I go to Girona again It will be my first choice. ❤️ Ok, what I promised I did. My second visit here (after week) was maybe even better. There was almost nobody and quite and nice music. The young lady was also nice like guys last time. And cappuccino excellent. I love this place!

The coffee is amazing. A genuine speciality coffee shop. Usually i drink 2 expresso but the quality made me take 3. Cozy place that is liked by many expats and travelers alike. In my 50 minutes spent there I have mostly hear english. Cool attitude from the barista, I anjoyed everything.

Wonderful breakfast place. Very tasty, fresh food — both the savory dishes and the cakes. Good coffee and matcha. Nice interior. But above all, very helpful staff: we were there just after opening, before the kitchen was fully up and running, because we needed to catch an early train. They quickly prepared both dine-in and takeaway food for us and helped us book a taxi. It was a very nice experience.

Absolute favorite of Barri Vell. Best coffee in Girona, food to die for every time and the best staff - always with a smile and great service for every customer. Love the seasonal specials and the delicious selection of cakes and cookies.
Laura Soldati★★★★★
This unassuming cafe on Carrer de Bellaire in Girona has some of the best sandwiches and all-day brunch items in town! The flavor combinations and quality of the food are second to none, and unlike any other that I’ve seen in the Barri Vell. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is cheery and pleasant, and you don’t feel rushed. I highly recommend it — and hope to return often!
Allan Koglmeier★★★★★
This place has been a focal point for our 1 month stay in Girona. Twice a week my wife would go to yoga here while I read the paper and waited for her to join me for breakfast after yoga. The food is amazing, best breakfast buritto ever, and an eggs benedict with salmon that is amazing. Many other choices, all handmade in kitchen you can see. Coffee drinks are super. People are warm, friendly and multi lingual. Great memories!!

Little shop inside the bicycle store. The ambience is nice but the problem is I ordered an iced matcha and it tasted like milk, water and a hint of grainy matcha that gets stuck in the back of my throat. If you want a good ice matcha wouldn’t come here, can’t say about the other options because decided not to order anything else after the matcha failure.

Delicious coffee at a breathtaking location. Service is a bit slow, and the waiting time for a coffee is 10-20 minutes. If you are in a rush to head off for your next ride, it’s not the right spot to stop by. But it's the perfect after-ride coffee + cake break/cool down.
Jessica C★★★★★
PROPER coffee! I came back here several times on my trip. The staff are lovely and the coffee is by far the best in Girona (and I tried the ones that people said were ‘the best’. Really different interior too with an awesome upstairs. Fab music. Good vibes. Gracias, La Maglia!

Such a great and modern coffee shop, and the location is superb as well. The selection of drinks is wide, and there are plenty of seating options. The lady at the bar was incredibly kind and friendly. My matcha latte was pretty fine and cost less than average. Would definitely recommend!

Best!! This little cafe is so cute. Serves really good coffee with oatmilk. Nice selections of organic wine working with local small Spanish producers as well as the ceramics. Cute little room at the back over looking the red bride while sipping your cafe con leche. The barista is so friendly nice and informative

This is the place for you if you are looking for an expert Barista creating you a real coffee, asking which notes of flavor you prefer (choose between 2 different intensities), and then actually perfects it.
This is by far the best place for high quality coffee in Girona. A lot places don’t get the milk foam right, but Patricia is so good at it ! 😍
Nika K★★★★★
Such a gem of a little café! We absolutely loved the specialty coffee and they had so many different products for sale: wines, ciders, pottery 😍 There's a little hidden terrace in the back of the shop, make sure to take a look out or enjoy a seat there if it's not too hot. The barista definitely brightened our day and it's an absolute suggestion if you're stopping by Girona!
Omri Stier★★★★★
The colorfulness of the place has drawn me to it. The little coffee shop right next to the bridge seemed to be a pottery shop (which it is, also) and a smiling barista welcomed us in.
The coffee served strong and with oat milk. They only have oat milk. For me it's fine, it's my preferred milk.
My drink was a bit too strong for my taste but with a spoon of the brown suger they had in the counter it was just right.
The great atmosphere, coffee and the smiling face of the barista will be my reasons to comes back if I'll ever get again to Girona.

+Brots was such a good little Girona find.
I wandered in on a rainy day after the weather turned, and the place was packed. Dan told me it’d be about ten minutes, but then the rain stopped, a balcony table opened up, and I somehow landed the money spot overlooking the main street.
The ham and cheese crepe was so delicious. Easily one of the best I’ve ever had. Simple, perfectly done, absolute 10/10.
I liked it so much I had to go back on my last day. Same balcony table was open again, Dan was back, along with a very friendly girl who made my cappuccino. Just a great casual spot with good people, great food, and exactly the kind of charm you hope to stumble into when you’re traveling.

Absolutely great experience.
The best hospitality I have ever received from a cafe.
Came to Girona solo for a short fitness trip and so glad I came to this place.
The owner has a heart of gold. The food is very clean-organic- and the coffee is absolutely on point.
Would be back just to visit this place.
Highlight to try the banana bread- lemon cake and chocolate slice!
Made with real and pure ingredients.
I am not the type to leave any review and this is my first but I had to leave a comment on this place.
Also massive thanks to Dan for his great hospitality also. The team is great and I look forward to returning!
Daniel H.★★★★★
Very nice little café.
Went there to escape the heat and read a little bit with some drinks and a really good carrot cake.
I especially like how the lemonade is not sweet by default but you are instead provided with sugar to sweeten it up to your personal preference. For me, most lemonades are always way too sweet so this was really great.
The café is located in the beautiful historic center of Girona, so a lot of people are walking by and the scenery is nice 🙂
Priyanka Shah★★★★☆
+Brots is one of those lovely little cafés in Girona that perfectly reflects the city's relaxed and creative vibe. Tucked away near the historic centre, it's the kind of place you stumble upon while exploring the charming streets and end up wanting to stay longer than planned. With its minimalist interiors, warm wooden accents, plenty of natural light, and calming atmosphere, it's an ideal spot to take a break from sightseeing.
The café has a modern yet cosy feel, making it popular with both locals and visitors. Whether you're looking to catch up with friends, get a bit of work done, or simply enjoy a quiet cup of coffee, +Brots offers a welcoming space that never feels rushed. The service was warm and friendly, adding to the overall experience.
We stopped by for a coffee, and it was exactly what we needed after walking around Girona. The coffee was freshly brewed, smooth, aromatic, and made with great care. Sometimes it's the simple things that stand out, and this was one of those moments—a well-made cup of coffee enjoyed in a peaceful setting.
What I also appreciated was the attention to detail, from the thoughtfully designed interiors to the relaxed ambience. The café has a clean, contemporary aesthetic without losing its warmth, making it feel inviting rather than pretentious. It's easy to see why locals choose this as a regular coffee spot.
Its location makes it a perfect stop while exploring Girona's beautiful streets, riverside bridges, and historic landmarks. Whether you're starting your day with a caffeine boost or looking for a mid-afternoon break, +Brots fits perfectly into a day of discovering the city.
If you're someone who enjoys independent cafés over large coffee chains, this place is definitely worth visiting. It's peaceful, beautifully designed, serves excellent coffee, and offers the kind of atmosphere that encourages you to slow down and simply enjoy the moment. Sometimes the best travel memories come from these small, unplanned stops, and +Brots was certainly one of them during our time in Girona.

We’re in Girona for the day from Barcelona and found this lovely café. We loved how the modern interior contrasts with the old town—it’s a really cool vibe.
The coffee was surprisingly good. Dani, the barista, told us they use their own carefully selected, high-quality beans, and the prices are very reasonable.
We heard it’s also a favorite spot for cyclists. Even though we’re not cyclists, we felt super welcome. Definitely recommend stopping by if you’re in Girona! ☕️

My trip to Girona was amazing and my day always starts with coffee. People like Logan make it possible and I hope you realize what a profound impact you did to my week. I managed to get a third place in my project week and have lots of fun with my classmates.
He is attentive and coffee tastes really good. I am so glad I found this place by accident. It's one of the few coffee shops which open at 8am, was convenient before my classes
Thank you Syra coffee and Logan!

The coffee is OK, but the service is amazing. The barista is Canadian and after only 4-5years in Catalonia, he can already speak catalan and spanish! What a great integration!

Great coffee and super friendly service. Alay (spelling?) and Logan were very helpful and accommodating. Also, try the fantastic pastries from a highly regarded local bakery. So happy to have discovered this location.
Tips for Enjoying Girona’s Coffee Scene
To make the most of your coffee tour in Girona, it helps to understand the local rhythms and etiquette. The city’s café culture differs slightly from the fast-paced urban models found in London or New York, and adapting to these nuances will significantly enhance your experience. Here are five essential tips to help you navigate the scene like a local.
-
Check the opening hours carefully. Many specialty coffee shops in Girona are run by small teams and may close for a few hours in the afternoon or take a weekday off. Unlike major chains, they do not operate on a 7-day, all-day schedule. Always verify the hours on their social media before making a special trip.
-
Embrace the "barra" culture. While many specialty spots offer comfortable seating, locals often take their espresso quickly at the bar. If a café is busy, standing at the bar not only speeds up your service but often costs slightly less than table service. It is the most authentic way to drink coffee in Spain.
-
Ask for the "café de especialidad" options. If you find yourself in a traditional-looking bar, asking for a standard "café con leche" will get you a dark roasted, sometimes bitter drink. Look for the words "especialidad" or "origen" on the menu. This signals that the beans are roasted lighter and brewed with precision methods.
-
Bring cash for smaller establishments. While most modern specialty cafés in Girona accept contactless cards and mobile payments, some of the smaller, older bars in the Old Town have a minimum spend for cards. Carrying a few euros ensures you can grab a quick cortado without hassle.
-
Respect the workspace environment. Girona is a popular destination for remote workers. If you plan to open a laptop, look for cafés with visible tables and power outlets. However, be mindful that some smaller specialty shops have a "no laptop" policy on weekends to keep tables turning for social guests. Ordering food or a second drink is always appreciated if you stay for a few hours.
The beauty of Girona’s coffee scene lies in its duality. You can start your morning with a meticulously brewed V60 in a bright, minimalist space, and finish your afternoon with a traditional Spanish torrefacto blend in a century-old bar. Both experiences are valid, and both tell a different story about the city.
As you wander between the ancient stone walls and the modern café interiors, you will notice that coffee here is treated with the same respect as the local wine and olive oil.
