10 Best Tapas Bars Near Catedral de la Almudena

Right in the historic heart of Madrid, the area surrounding the Catedral de la Almudena is a fascinating blend of royal heritage and everyday local life. Just steps from the Royal Palace, this district is where centuries-old traditions meet a thriving modern food scene. For visitors, exploring this neighborhood offers a unique chance to taste authentic Spanish culture in a truly spectacular setting.

The concept of "ir de tapas" is more than just eating; it is a cherished social ritual that defines the rhythm of Madrid. It means moving from bar to bar, sharing small plates, and enjoying lively conversation. Finding a great tapas bar here is not just about the food, but about soaking in the atmosphere that makes the city so special.

However, the area’s immense popularity with tourists means that not every establishment offers a genuine or high-quality experience. The streets immediately surrounding the cathedral can be a minefield of overpriced, low-quality tourist traps. Knowing where the locals go is the key to unlocking the true culinary soul of this historic barrio.

A great tapas bar in this area should offer a balance of quality ingredients, a welcoming atmosphere, and a sense of place. It might be a historic tavern with dusty wine bottles lining the walls or a modern bar putting a creative spin on classic recipes. The best ones make you feel like you have discovered a secret, even if it has been there for a hundred years.

This guide is designed to help you navigate the charming, winding streets and find the true gems. We have focused on establishments that are within a comfortable walking distance of the cathedral. You will find places perfect for a quick morning bite, a leisurely afternoon of wine and cheese, or a full evening of feasting.

By stepping just a few blocks away from the main plaza, you can find yourself among madrileños enjoying their daily routines. The difference in quality and price is often remarkable. This list is your passport to eating well and experiencing Madrid like a local, right in the shadow of the Almudena.

Whether you are a foodie on a dedicated culinary tour or a traveler wanting to refuel between sightseeing, this selection has something for you. Prepare to discover the flavors that define this regal and vibrant part of the Spanish capital.

The place was quite ok. The food was good but nothing that I blew my socks off. I felt like the restaurant itself was a bit touristic. Staff was accommodating and nice.

Incredible restaurant! The food tasted extremely fresh and authentic and was served quickly. Marci (I believe he’s the owner) was incredibly kind and accommodating. Even though there wasn’t a table available for my party when we arrived, we only had to wait for less than 10 minutes. Now about the food. Each bite kept getting better and better! We ordered the Jamon Imperico, Bull Tail Gyoza, Honey Eggplant and the Crispy Fried Pig Ear and all of them were delicious! This was also enough food for 4 people. The jamon especially was some of the best we had during our trip. We would definitely come back!

Great place for tapas. There might be a bit of a wait, but totally worth it. Everything was super delicious, staff was nice.

Although the atmosphere seemed inviting, we were disappointed in the end. First, the service was a bit slow. And not the friendliest we had encountered while on our trip. So not a good start. When reviewing the menu, we ordered several tapas for the table. Once they arrived, we sampled all and felt the food lacked freshness compared to all the others we tried over the last several days.

Yummy food! Good portions! Good drinks! Nice small place with good service. The guys are funny too. Gave us Americans some shots and recommendations for churros as they were closing late on a Sunday night. Awesome experience! The area outside is very nice too. Shops, more restaurants and good views.

Our first place we visited after arriving. Chat recommended due to its history. Wait staff not the friendliest but we managed. If looking for a quick drink it could be worth it but then again,,, there’s 1000 others you could try.

Great outdoor seating and wonderful service from the staff! The calamari tasted just right, not to mention croquettes and jambon iberico.. to die for!

Stopped for breakfast early in the morning after landing in Madrid and had the revuelto de espárragos con morcilla and coffee. Very good food and outstanding service.
Richard Gahagan★★★★★
Beautiful traditional eateries located near the Royal Palace. Very traditional tapas menu with fantastic freshly cooked food. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. Very traditional place you could easily just come for drinks or tapas but I would highly recommend both, we loved it. The wine choices are excellent try the house wine first you probably will be very happy. (One thing to note, the food is so nice but if you are used to UK tapas portions, you will find the portion sizes here about twice the size of at home so be careful not to over order. That said, they are so kind, the staff will package up food if you want to take away).

Exactly what you want from a rustic and well-recommended tapas tavern in Madrid. Class A service, an incredible selection of plates, and personal service by a culinary guide. Our server was wonderful, giving suggestions throughout the meal. The setting is fantastic, just blocks away from iconic Spanish monuments and the Royal Palace, with a view of an idyllic sunken garden through the window. Bravo!

This lovely restaurant is right in between old town Madrid and the Palacio Real looking out on a beautiful green park next to the bridge. We enjoyed the sound track which was a mix of English language 70s and 80s music with Spanish tunes. The menu was inexpensive and delicious. My husband and I shared the mozzarella and tomato salad and scrambled eggs with mushrooms and asparagus. My main was bonito with a tomato sauce and lovely mashed potatoes with spinach. The menu comes with a drink and dessert. I went less caloric with a tasty piece of melon.
Shinta Smith★★★★★
It was a cold December night, we did not want to walk far. This place was a minute walk away from our rent house so it’s perfect Food was great! We ordered 5-6 tapas for the 3 of us. Every single dish tasted delicious. My favorite was the Patatas Bravas, what can I say… I have fried potatoes are my weakness. Our meal ends with tiramisu and cheesecake. The whole dinner was a very pleasant experience.

We stopped here after visiting a nearby park. We are really glad we did. The food was amazing. Definitely one of our favorite places from our trip. Wife and I both ordered from the menu of the day but tried different items, both were great. We ordered our daughter meatballs and those were ridiculously good as well. Service was also excellent. Great value for the money, highly recommend this spot which is off the beaten path.

I visited many tapas bars during my few days in Madrid, and this one left the strongest impression on me. It was small, loud, and crowded like most places in the area during the evening. We had to wait for a table, and the one we got was in a less-than-pleasant corner of the basement. But… the food and the homemade vermouth were the best I’ve ever tried. Excellent taste and presentation. The waiter was very professional, which made the experience even better. I would definitely recommend visiting!
Jordan★★★☆☆
Unfortunately the food didn’t match the fantastic service. We shared various plates such as the anchovies with tomato and bread ,the anchovies with blue cheese , cured ham which in fairness was very nice and smoky. The black pudding and also pork cheeks were very disappointing, dry and lacklustre. The vermouth was exceptional as was the waiters service. I feel sad the food wasn’t the same.
Columbus OH★★★★☆
We were seated downstairs, which was noticeably less appealing than the upstairs area. Our table was wobbly, and switching tables didn’t help. The bathroom door looked dirty, and the downstairs space overall felt unkempt. Service was very slow; the waiter was clearly working hard, running up and down the stairs, but simply couldn’t keep up. That said, the food was tasty, especially the fish balls. We ended up ordering two. Main dish portions were on the small side though. If we had been seated upstairs, the experience might have been much better.

We arrived hungry at 4 pm on Friday after a long day of traveling. Got ourselves 2 stools and a table. Our waiter took care of the customers in the order they came in. We ordered what he recommended #1, 5, 9 and 2 glasses of house white. He gave us a some anchovies and chips while we waited. All I can say is.. It was so delicious! The tapas came in this order and one was better than before. 9. Smoked sardines on (freshly mashed tomatoes) toast. 5. Smoked salmon with tzatziki sauce (lovely black caviar) on toast. 1. Prawn with mayonnaise and spring onion spread on toast. It came out hot and the shrimp was fresh and cooked perfectly. We ordered a third glass to share because the wine paired so well with the prawn toast. We got full, happy, and satisfied. We really enjoyed ourselves and highly recommend Taberna La Concha.
Barbara Bačurin★★★★★
NOT a tourist trap! Get the prawn on toast as well as the pork in 3 cheese sauce on toast along with the vermouth cocktail. You will love it! From the service (Kristian was an amazing host!), the food, the atmosphere - its everything you want from a tapas bar on THE tapas street in Madrid. Genuinely sad we went there on our last night bacause we would definitely have come back multiple times during our stay.

El Minibar is an absolute gem in Madrid! The food is wonderful, offering creative and delicious tapas like the award-winning Tapa Bretón. The atmosphere is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home instantly. On top of that, the space is beautiful, cozy, and full of character. It is the perfect spot for a casual yet memorable dinner. Highly recommended!

A small place near central Madrid. Air conditioned which was a savior today at 98degrees. Had a tomato and lettuce salad, gazpacho, spiced potatoes and fried cod with shrimp. Everything was excellent and in tapas portions was more than enough for two people. All washed down with beer. The menu is larger and varied and portions can be tapas sized or larger for sharing with a bigger group. Definitely worth a lunch or dinner stop.
Brian Deurloo★★★★★
★★★★★ Excellent tapas experience in Madrid. I came here on a Sunday afternoon around 1:00 PM right when they opened, and within a few minutes the place filled up quickly. I didn’t have a reservation, but since I was dining solo they were kind enough to seat me. You may want reservations if you’re coming during busy hours. I had the melted goat cheese appetizer with what tasted like fig jam and a balsamic glaze, paired with the bread they served, absolutely delicious and very rich in the best way. I also ordered the ham croquettes, which were excellent as well. Between those two dishes and two Cokes, it was more than enough food for one person. The atmosphere is quaint and very Madrid. The staff was efficient and friendly. I read many great reviews beforehand and after eating here I understand why. A local favorite. Highly recommend if you’re looking for authentic tapas in central Madrid.
Timothy Redman★★★★★
My dining companion and I were looking for a quick drink and snack after touristing hard. We found this cozy place right off the main drag. We ordered drinks, and food, tuna tataki, and the duck confit. Both delightfully tasty, savory, and rich. What a treat! Our appetite satiated, we once again took to the crowded streets of Madrid.
Josh Siu★★★★★
Food was good. Service was good (although we heard one of the servers be a bit curt with the next table about having to buy food to sit at the table, not just drinks). They offered a free little tapa while we waited for our food. Space is a bit smaller so you might be at the bar during a busy time. My spouse wanted lemonade but they didn’t have any. When asked for water with lemon and they cut an entire lemon to add to her water - awesome! What to got: - ham croquettes - shrimp croquettes (a hint of spiciness) - crispy wild boar (in a spring roll deep fried outer layer)

We had an absolutely fantastic experience at this tapas restaurant. Every dish was beautifully presented, packed with flavour, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. The atmosphere was warm, vibrant, and perfect for a relaxed evening with friends or family. What truly made our visit exceptional was the outstanding service from Mr. Frank Silvero. He was professional, attentive, and genuinely welcoming from the moment we arrived. His recommendations were excellent, he made sure everything was perfect throughout our meal, and his friendly personality added so much to the overall experience. It’s rare to receive service of this calibre, and Mr. Silvero deserves special recognition for making our evening so memorable. If you’re looking for delicious tapas paired with exceptional hospitality, this restaurant is an easy five-star recommendation. We’ll definitely be back!

Amazing food for the prize! Great and superfriendly and efficient service. We loved the prawns, I enjoyed the Cesar salad, my husband not. We did not enjoy the beef Tatar . Pimentos were yummy. Good place to come if you are hungry and have not a lot of time.

Great Service & People-Watching, But the Food Misses the Mark Come here for the location and the atmosphere, but lower your expectations for the kitchen and bar. The Highlights: Our waiter, Moutalab, completely carried the experience. He was incredibly friendly, highly knowledgeable about the area, and happy to customize dishes to your palate. Ask for him! The location is also fantastic for walking around and people-watching. The Drawbacks: The food looked authentic but was mediocre and bland at best. The sangria was also highly diluted with hardly any alcohol. Verdict: Go for the vibe, the tourist-watching, and Moutalab’s excellent service—just don't expect a high-quality culinary experience.

Really love this place. A hidden gem of Madrid with Andalucian vibes. Clean, with great services and friendly staff. Tasty food at affordable prices. Great variety of dishes and tapas. Good deal for the table of four toasts. I would recommend to make a reservation or be there before 13:00.

Delicious food at a very reasonable price. The wine was great as well. We tried a few different tostas and all were lovely.

We were a group of six and went there around seven in the evening without reservation and got a table without a problem. The place seems small but it has another room downstairs where you can sit. The waitress was really nice and suggested us to try their specialty which hate their sandwiches. So we each choose a different kind to try as many as possible and we weren’t disappointed. The bread was huge for the price and everyone of them was delicious. To drink we all hat either a soda or beer. They don’t have Radler there but they gently offered to mix it themselves with a lemonade. All in all a great place for tapas at a low price and with very good taste. Will definitely come back!

Amazingly delicious tapas! The place looks small and full when you enter but go in anyway. They have more place at downstairs. It is a very local place and they don’t have English menu. You need to use translation tools to order also 🙂 the vegetarian options are limited but so delicious! The one with caramelised onion is a bless for the mouth!!

Best tostadas in Madrid. The goat cheese and caramelized onion one is amazing !! However, the duck pate was revolting.

Great restaurant with a bar area at the front and tables at the back. The tables for 2 are tiny and you are very close to the next table, we were lucky in that both neighbouring tables were finishing up as we arrived. Service was very efficient. Food was delicious. We had a bottle of wine (16.50),baby squid with salad, tortilla and a beef dish. The squid was so good we ordered a second portion. The bill came to a reasonable 42.40

We had a wonderful time at Taberna El Sur. The service was amazing as was the food. It was very busy, despite being fairly early on a Monday evening, and the crowd looked to be made up of more locals than tourists, which is always a good sign. We had the iberico plate, moussaka, pork cheeks, octopus and garlic prawns. The only slight miss was that the prawns had a bit of grit in them, though the flavor was great. We tried a number of Spanish wines, each better than the last. Highly recommend.
Alexis★★★★★
we had a fantastic experience dining here! first of all, the restaurant is small but cozy and clean, with the staff welcoming us in as soon as we stepped through the door. the menu is english-friendly, so it was easy for us to order traditional spanish food. my favourite was the Chipirones a la plancha, the squid 🦑was seasoned well and cooked to perfection, happiness in every bite! the mayo paired really well with it, as well as the fresh salad. it was also nice to try the ham/mushroom croquetas and Tortilla de Patatas 🥔. the sweet and refreshing sangria was also the perfect drink alongside the dishes on a hot day. the host also gave us complimentary bailey shots after our meal, which was so nice 🫶 really recommend this place if you're looking to try some traditional, authentic spanish food and tapas!!! 💪🍷

We dined here as a group of three and had a great experience. The food was really delicious, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming, which made our meal even more enjoyable. Definitely a great place to enjoy Spanish food in Madrid. Highly recommended!
Bob Excell★★★★★
This was not our first visit to this restaurant. We have been a number of times before, but I decided it was time for an update. This little bar is not a super deluxe dinning establishment, it is a wonderful Taberna with a good range of drinks including vermont on tap, typical of so many bars in Madrid. The wine list is small with a reasonable selection of good priced wines. A wonderful selection of starter and main dishes to enjoy. Don't over order there isn't the space on your table, service is good even when very busy. Tables are small and the stalls for table eating are smaller than most, but don't let this deter you, there is a bench seat against the wall running both sides of the entire length of the dinning area. It always appears to be busy so it can feel a little cramped, but that all adds to the atmosphere. During our meal we spoke to our neigbouring tables on one side a couple from Canada who first visited with their son and this was their second visit. On another table sat 4 young students they dine here regularly. Considering this the age ranges from young 20's , a couple in their 50's and us two young at hart retired 69 & 73 year oldies. I hope this all helps explain the warm welcome and wonderful atmosphere that makes this restaurant our favouite when visiting Madrid and I do suggest you give it a try, but remember it is a bar not a 5star restaurant, but excellent value for money Our bill may not be typical of others but we did go a little overboard with 4 starters between us, 2 mains and a shared desert not to mentioning bottles of wine, water, beer, liquors and coffees. Our total spend does include our tip for the great service.

MajareTa was absolutely delicious! It’s very tiny inside but beautiful. We tried the toro croquetas and the huevos with artichokes and potatoes, and both dishes were outstanding. The toro croquetas were crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and packed with flavor. The huevos with artichokes and potatoes were comforting, perfectly cooked, and had a wonderful combination of textures and flavors. You can really tell that high-quality ingredients are used in every dish. Everything was fresh, well-seasoned, and beautifully prepared. The food was both satisfying and memorable, and we enjoyed every bite. We’re already looking forward to coming back. Highly recommend!

Had a nice meal here trying some real Andalusian classics. We started with the Salmorejo — the traditional cold tomato cream made with olive oil, bread, and a touch of vinegar. It came topped with chopped boiled egg and cured ham, silky smooth and beautifully balanced between tangy and rich. A perfect starter, especially refreshing if you're visiting in warmer weather. Next was the Albóndigas de Choco (cuttlefish meatballs) — a dish you don't see often outside Andalusia. The meatballs were tender with a delicate seafood flavor, served in a rich, golden sauce. Really unique and packed with flavor. We also tried the Flamenquín Cordobés — the traditional Cordobesian specialty of rolled pork loin stuffed with cured ham and cheese, breaded and fried. It was nicely presented with little roasted potatoes glazed in a honey-mustard sauce and dots of garlic aioli on the side, but unfortunately the pork itself came out a bit dry for our taste. The sauces helped, but the meat could have used a touch more moisture. Overall, portions were generous and prices reasonable for the quality. The Salmorejo and cuttlefish meatballs were definite highlights — just wish the flamenquín had been a bit juicier. Still a good spot to try authentic Andalusian dishes in Madrid.

Had dinner here a few days ago. It was as good as all the reviews said. We were looked after exceptionally well. Nothing was rushed, lots of help with the menu and wine list. The food was very good quality well prepared, and well priced I would certainly recommend.

Early flight landed us at a tiny Andalusian (southern Spain) spot 5 mins before opening—a random Google gem with rave reviews. Total win! Small place, huge flavors. They had an English menu, and the lovely lady who greeted us explained everything in detail, giving us a great understanding of the dishes. Our fam of 4 devoured two lunch sets (with artichoke ham soup/Spanish cold tomato soup, salmon,/beef stew, and dessert×2), tuna, Cordoba pork rolls, and a stunning local cheese board. The cheese platter was a highlight—four types of local sheep/goat cheeses paired with different jams, dried fruits, and jellies. This was a super satisfying meal at a great price. Highly recommend!

A DELICIOUS meal. Slow service. The bread served with olive oil and black flakes salt was mind blowing... may be the best bread I've ever had. It just breathes freshness. They do simple so well. I will say though, the Russian-shrimp salad is very mayo heavy and was difficult to finish.

Tips for Choosing the Best Tapas Bar

Navigating the tapas scene near such a major landmark requires a bit of local knowledge. While the list above offers excellent starting points, knowing how to identify quality on your own will enhance your entire trip. Use these practical tips to eat like a local and avoid the common pitfalls of dining in a tourist-heavy zone.

Walk a Few Blocks for Better Value
The golden rule of dining near any major attraction is to walk at least five minutes away from it. Prices drop significantly and quality often rises the further you get from the main square. Explore the side streets like Calle de Segovia or the La Latina district just south of the cathedral for a more authentic atmosphere.

Look for Bars with Spanish Menus and Locals
A telltale sign of a good spot is a crowded bar filled with Spanish speakers. If the menu is only in six languages and features photos of the food, it is likely aimed at tourists. Instead, look for chalkboards with daily specials in Spanish, or simply point to what the locals are eating at the bar.

Understand the Local Tipping and Payment Culture
In Madrid, tipping is not obligatory, but leaving a few coins or rounding up the bill is appreciated. Many locals prefer to pay in cash for small tapas bills, though most established bars accept cards. Keep some euros on hand, especially if you plan to visit traditional markets or smaller taverns.

Embrace the Standing Bar Culture
The best and cheapest way to enjoy tapas is often standing at the bar. Not only does this give you a front-row seat to the action, but some bars charge a supplement for table service on the terrace. Ordering a caña (small beer) or a wine at the bar often comes with a small free tapa in the most traditional spots.

Time Your Visit Like a Local
Meal times in Spain are later than in many other countries. Lunch typically runs from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, and dinner rarely starts before 8:30 PM or 9:00 PM. If you go at 6:00 PM, you might find the kitchen closed. Use this window to enjoy a vermouth or a coffee, and return when the atmosphere is buzzing.
