Finding a great cup of coffee or a quiet spot to relax near Madrid’s most famous green space can be surprisingly tricky. While El Retiro Park offers beautiful paths and shaded benches, the surrounding neighborhoods of Jerónimos, Ibiza, and Pacífico are packed with options that range from tourist traps to hidden local gems. Knowing which spots offer authentic Spanish hospitality versus overpriced, mediocre fare makes all the difference in your afternoon. The right café can serve as the perfect bookend to a morning of rowing on the Estanque or visiting the Crystal Palace.
The local coffee culture here is distinct and deeply ingrained in daily life. While specialty coffee and brunch culture have exploded in recent years, the traditional Spanish café still holds its ground with strong espressos, fresh orange juice, and toasted bread with tomato. Depending on your mood, you might want a fast barra experience standing at the counter or a leisurely terraza where you can watch the world go by. The best establishments near the park blend quality ingredients with an atmosphere that invites you to linger without feeling rushed.
Accessibility is a key factor when choosing a spot in this area. After walking the vast grounds of the park, your feet will likely be tired, and the last thing you want is a twenty-minute hike to a coffee shop. The most valuable cafés are those situated just a few steps from the main gates, such as the Puerta de Alcalá or the entrance near the Atocha station. Proximity allows you to transition seamlessly from the serenity of the gardens to the comfort of a shaded terrace without losing the relaxed vibe.
The diversity of the culinary scene here is another major advantage for visitors. You are not limited to just churros and café con leche, although those are certainly available in abundance. The area has seen a surge in artisan bakeries, vegan-friendly smoothie bars, and specialty roasters who take their craft seriously. This means that whether you are traveling with picky eaters, seeking a healthy lunch, or searching for the perfect flat white, there is a spot tailored to your specific craving just around the corner.
Price and quality can vary dramatically based on how close you are to the main tourist entrances. Generally, walking just one or two blocks away from the immediate park gates will yield significantly better prices and more attentive service. Locals tend to avoid the restaurants that face the main roundabouts, preferring the side streets where rent is lower and the focus is on repeat customers rather than one-time visitors. Knowing where the locals go ensures you get an authentic experience without paying a premium for the view.
To help you navigate this bustling culinary landscape, we have curated a list of the top spots based on atmosphere, coffee quality, food offerings, and proximity to the park. Whether you are looking for a place to plug in your laptop for a few hours or a quick pitstop for a pastry, this guide has you covered. These recommendations prioritize genuine hospitality and consistency, ensuring your time outside the park is just as enjoyable as your time inside it.
Here are the best places to recharge after your stroll through the greenery.

I highly recommend the baked eggs at this restaurant; they are truly innovative and delicious. The mushroom variety is particularly noteworthy, as it offers a delightful experience akin to Alfredo sauce, but with eggs instead of chicken. Additionally, I must say that I enjoyed one of the best coffees I’ve ever had there. It was so exceptional that I considered purchasing extra coffee to take home. Unfortunately, they do not sell coffee beans, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant for brunch, as it offers a unique and satisfying dining experience.

We Tried baked eggs with mushrooms / specials with sweet potato and baked egg with ham.
The portion size is more than enough for one. Waiters were lovely. Had to wait a bit but overall great breakfast.

Very nice coffee place to sit down! Apart from the flat white and iced matcha latte, we also enjoyed the pistaccio cake! It was super soft and tasty 👌🏼
There are few seatings but if it is not a rush hour you can find space.

I spent a few weeks in Madrid this past summer and visited Sood several times while I was there 🙌🏻 From the first day I walked in, I was hooked. Their drinks are exceptional! I had a flat white, a tiramisu latte, on another day I had a V60 drip, and my wife got their banana matcha every single time we went. We also tried their avocado toast and it was delicious!
Now onto the atmosphere, man it was so chill!!! I could spend an entire day haha.
The cherry on top was the staff, wow! They are all so lovely! Every single barista that I met was beyond nice and I even got the chance to meet the owner, Camilo. Such a great guy! By the end of my trip I had to drop by to say bye to everyone. Next time I land in Madrid I am going straight to Sood!
Lukas Eggenberger★★★★★
Incredible little café. Flat Whites were fantastic, cozy atmosphere and the food couldn't have been any better. It's made entirely fresh to order. Yogurt bowl with home made granola, avocado toast seasoned to perfection🤤 Back to the coffee, sure is quite different from other places! Subtle cacao note, quite low acidity and fantastic milk foam. Would visit again for sure!!

This coffee shop really brought my spirits up after a terrible morning, not only were we welcomed by such a sweet and welcoming staff but the vanilla latte was decorated by such a beautiful work of latte art! Best coffee I’ve had in Madrid. The matcha latte was super fruity and refreshing and the omelette was filling and satisfying. Definitely recommend!

Recently spent a few days in Madrid and we were lucky to be staying in an apartment next to Kissaten. Walked in our first morning and the coffee and food was delicious, so much that we started our days enjoying breakfast here the rest of our stay. The staff is very friendly and made us feel welcomed. Highly recommended.

When we arrived they didn't serve coffee because their coffee machine was broken. But we stayed to drink a lemonade. It's very nice inside, they have many tables. Avara has a few tables for 2 people near the place.
Dražen Grbić★★★★★
We had:
Tuna tartar - it was awesome with all the sides
Some steak - meat was really good, but side was not enough, and not so tasty (some kind of deep fried potato)
Desert - Carrot cake and Pavlova, perfect 😍
Service was okay, but their English wasn't, at the end we manage to comunicate.
For sure it's place with really good food and that's what matters.

Walk in customers on a cold afternoon after visit to Prado museum. Was happy that food was being served from 1230pm onwards. Enjoyed the hearty chicken soup and the flavourful pumpkin soup.

Murillo Café feels like one of those places you don’t expect to find outside Venezuela. I tried several things and everything was on point, but the polvorosa de pollo really stood out. It instantly took me back to Venezuela, where I had it many times growing up, pure comfort food, the kind that brings memories with every bite.
The tequeños were light and crispy, not oily, and clearly made with care. The numpias were another favorite, crunchy, flavorful, and even better dipped in soy sauce, which adds a subtle Asian twist without taking away from what makes them special.
The sliders were kind of normal, nothing special.
What truly completes the experience is the attention. It’s warm, natural, and welcoming, making you feel at home without trying too hard. Murillo Café delivers authenticity, nostalgia, and genuinely good food.

Need to leave a review because the waitress today was just so delightful. Super friendly, always a smile on her face! Tortilla was good as was the Aperil Spritz. Fave placein El Retiro.
Geanina Cáceres★☆☆☆☆
I’ve never been to a food establishment with waitstaff as rude as as our server here, if you can call him that, since he didn’t serve anything but attitude. He came up to our table to ask what we wanted, annoyed and irritable, even though it was clear as day none of us had been given menus. Then he proceeds to carelessly flop one on the table for our party of four and ask what we want. My relative asks what beers they have available. His response? “Didn’t you read the menu?” I was aghast. When we replied if it was okay to ask him anyway, he said “that’s why you have a menu” and then stalked off, never to be seen again. We waited 15 minutes and not another soul approached us. Customer service was not dreadful, it was nonexistent, but I don’t think it’s anything that concerns them in the very least.
davit kajaia★☆☆☆☆
This is the worst coffee I have ever had. The cappuccino was also terrible.
Tedi Dimitrova★★★☆☆
I wanted a cookie with a ice cream because i saw it on the poster but they didn’t have it, then i wanted to order an ice cream flavor (there are about 20 in the menu) and they only had 3 and they didn’t taste good. I ordered a smoothie that didn’t have much taste.
Carlos★☆☆☆☆
Worst service on the planet. Unacceptably slow. No excuses. I recommend you avoid this place. 45 minutes later still waiting to be attended. 4 members of staff and only 12 tables. What’s going on.

I traveled to Madrid with a few friends to attend both BTS concerts, and we stayed near this café. On the first morning we had breakfast there, we found out that the owner's daughter was an ARMY too, and from that moment on, we were treated with so much kindness and care throughout the rest of our stay.
Everyone there is incredibly warm and welcoming, and you can tell that the food is prepared with love. I truly hope with all my heart that BTS will return to Madrid soon, and if they do, I already know where I'll be having breakfast during my stay.
Thank you so much for all your kindness!! 💜

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Café Near El Retiro
Navigating the café scene in a foreign city can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you are tired and hungry. The key is to match your specific needs—whether that is speed, comfort, or a specific dietary requirement—with the right environment. By keeping a few local customs and practical strategies in mind, you can avoid the common pitfalls of tourist dining and enjoy a much more authentic and satisfying break during your visit to Madrid.
Timing is everything. Spanish meal times differ from much of the rest of Europe and North America. If you want a quiet coffee, avoid the rush between 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM when locals take their mid-morning break. For lunch, most kitchens open at 1:00 PM, and the rush hits at 2:30 PM. Arriving just before or after these peaks will get you a better table and faster service.
Look for the daily menu. If you are hungry for more than a snack, seek out places offering a "Menú del Día." This fixed-price lunch menu usually includes a starter, main course, drink, and dessert or coffee. It is almost always the best value for money in the city and offers a true taste of Spanish home cooking compared to ordering à la carte.
Embrace the bar culture. If you are in a hurry or want to save a little money, do what the locals do and stand at the bar. In many traditional cafés, prices are lower if you consume your coffee and pastry standing up rather than sitting at a table. It is also the fastest way to get served, as you are directly in the line of sight of the barista.
Check for terrace supplements. Sitting outside on a sunny day is one of the great pleasures of Madrid, but it often comes with a small surcharge. Many establishments charge a slightly higher price for terrace service compared to indoor seating. This is perfectly normal, but it is good to be aware of it to avoid surprises when the bill arrives.
Bring cash for small purchases. While most modern cafés and roasters accept credit cards, some traditional Spanish bars have a minimum spend for card transactions, usually around 5 to 10 euros. If you are just grabbing a quick espresso or a bottle of water, having a few coins or a small bill in your pocket will make the transaction much smoother.
Choosing the right spot to rest your feet is an essential part of the Madrid experience. The city is meant to be enjoyed slowly, with plenty of pauses for caffeine and conversation. By venturing just beyond the park gates with this guide in hand, you can trade the generic tourist traps for places that offer real character, delicious food, and the warm hospitality that defines this vibrant capital. Take your time, order something you have never tried before, and enjoy the rhythm of the neighborhood.
