After a morning spent wandering the halls of the Prado, absorbing the genius of Velázquez and Goya, the body inevitably begins to demand a different kind of sustenance. The neighborhood surrounding Madrid’s most famous museum is not just a hub for art lovers; it is also a surprisingly rich landscape for traditional baking.

Whether you are seeking a quick, flaky breakfast before the doors open or a sweet reward after a long afternoon of art appreciation, the Barrio de las Letras and the Jerónimos area have you covered. However, navigating the tourist-heavy streets directly adjacent to the museum can be tricky if you want to avoid generic, mass-produced pastries.

To truly eat like a local, you need to know where the Madrileños go for their daily bread, celebratory cakes, and afternoon snacks. The best spots often hide in plain sight, blending historic charm with recipes that have been perfected over generations.

This guide cuts through the noise to bring you the definitive list of authentic bakeries, pastry shops, and artisan bread makers within walking distance of the Prado. We have focused on quality, tradition, and proximity to ensure you don’t waste precious sightseeing time on a bad croissant.

From historic institutions that have served royalty to modern sourdough pioneers, there is a flavor for every palate. Lace up your walking shoes, bring your appetite, and get ready to discover the sweeter side of Madrid’s Golden Triangle of Art.

Absolutely amazing experience! The food was beyond incredible — everything was fresh, delicious, and beautifully prepared. The service and staff were exceptional, so friendly, attentive, and welcoming. The place itself was spotless, beautifully maintained, and had such a lovely atmosphere. You can really tell they care about every little detail, from the cleanliness to the quality of the food and the overall experience. Definitely one of the best places I’ve been to, and I would highly recommend it! I’ll definitely be coming back. ❤️

This little bakery was right around from where we stayed in Madrid. The workers were so incredibly nice and helpful and the pastries were amazing. We went multiple times and tried the strawberry pistachio cake, the carrot cake, canneles, and some other treats. It all was incredible— the carrot cake was the best I have ever had. You can see them making the baked goods fresh when you walk in. One of the best pastries we have had.
Tresha Torreon★★★★★
Lovely café with great pastries! I also really appreciated how accommodating the staff were. I was dining solo and they made me feel completely comfortable, no awkwardness at all. Even though it was quite busy, they still found a way to seat me and made the experience really pleasant. I’ll definitely be back! 😊
Lina★★★★★
Cute and small pastelería, but the little cakes are absolutely amazing. Each one is packed with flavor and clearly made with attention to detail. Despite the size of the place, the quality really stands out. A perfect spot if you’re looking for something sweet and special. Definitely worth a visit, and I will come back again.
Manuel Gonzalez Vazquez★★★★☆
I usually have coffee with milk and it’s really good. Both the coffee AND the milk are typically not well-taken care of but this place makes them really good. Form me the real deal is when I can have the coffee without sugar. And this is the case here, a a mellow and tasty "café con leche" The pastries are also high quality, good looking and tasty. The place is small and quaint and usually packed because there aren’t many tables. The prices are aligned with a gourmet style restaurant. They’re on the high side but I’d say they’re worth the quality offered. The service is okay. I had a minor misunderstanding that I think they could have handled more elegantly but it wasn’t a big deal.

An excellent bakery near Plaza del Opera on a quiet street. Chef Trabanco is a true craftsman. His creations are beautiful and expertly prepared. So good with the perfect balance of flavors and texture. And he's a super nice guy! The bakery itself is a nice quiet spot away from the tourist spots (and the tourists).

Inside Santa Eulalia gives you the feeling like being in “little Paris”, with cozy old-world decor, books, plants, and exposed brick walls. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you can really feel the care behind the place. The pastries and breads are clearly top quality, made with great ingredients and a lot of attention to detail. I had an excellent cortado with a DELICIOUS hazelnuts bun, the cakes and the breads looked incredible. Service was very friendly and English speaking. The space is quite spacious and with WiFi so you can enjoy the coffee and the pastries and also work there.

Excellent place to enjoy a sweet and also they have brunch with eggs! The sweets are just incredible! (Especially pain au chocolates with pistachio and chocolate) Also coffee was good and eggs were really good portion! Totally recommended!
Dhoha Rashed Alshalawi★★★★☆
Loved the sweets, but not the coffee. The cappuccino didn’t taste like a proper cappuccino—it was more like instant coffee and lacked foam. The coffee bar could be more organized and cleaner, especially since the main seating area is right in front of it. On the positive side, the staff are sweet, kind, and provide good service. The decoration and overall vibe of the place are authentic, and the location is great.

A pastry lovers delight. I was pretty sure I wanted to get only their famous chocolate napolitana and it did not disappoint.. decadent chocolate cake (ish) inside a buttery airy puff pastry. Heaven in a bite. Not too sweet and perfect for some one like me who doesnot have a sweet tooth. They have huge lines but they move pretty fast. So dont give up. Also there is no chance of them being sold out since they keep bringing out freshly baked goods. Good place to even bring back baked gifts for friends and family. Centrally located at Puerta del Sol. Highly recommend this spot.

La Mallorquina is a lovely café with delicious cakes, especially the Ensaimada. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Definitely a nice place to enjoy a sweet treat.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Visiting La Mallorquina is stepping into a living piece of Madrid’s culinary history. Located in the heart of Puerta del Sol, this iconic pastry shop delivers not only exceptional quality but also tradition and charm that have endured for generations. Their pastries are simply outstanding, fresh, delicate, and crafted with precision. The napolitanas, ensaimadas, and classic Spanish pastries are rich in flavor, perfectly balanced, and absolutely unforgettable. The aroma alone invites you in, and every bite confirms why this place has remained a beloved institution for so long. Whether paired with a coffee or enjoyed on their own, their creations reflect true mastery of traditional Spanish pastry. The service is efficient despite the constant flow of visitors, a testament to its popularity and reputation. La Mallorquina is more than a pastry shop, it is part of Madrid’s identity. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates tradition, authenticity, and exceptional sweets.

04/04 西班牙人擠爆的麵包店,點了一個可頌,點餐要直接跟店員喊 The Pastelería La Mallorquina - Sol is one of the most famous traditional pastry shops in Madrid, located directly at the Puerta del Sol, one of the city’s busiest and most central squares. Founded in 1894, La Mallorquina has become an iconic stop for both locals and visitors seeking classic Spanish pastries in a historic setting. It is especially known for its elegant ground-floor pastry counter and its upstairs café, where customers can sit and enjoy views over the bustling Puerta del Sol. Signature items include napolitanas de chocolate (chocolate-filled pastries), palmeras, milhojas, and a variety of traditional cakes and baked goods. The pastries are typically rich, buttery, and made in the classic Madrid confectionery style. Today, La Mallorquina remains one of Madrid’s most recognizable pastry institutions, valued for its central location, long history, and consistent quality, making it a popular stop for a quick breakfast, afternoon coffee, or sweet break while exploring the city center.
Aaliya Tariq★★★★★
Loved La Mallorquina 🎀 Such a cute bakery with a cozy vibe. We had breakfast here and everything was amazing. The croissants were huge, soft, and slightly sweet, and the Napolitana (especially the cream and chocolate one) was a highlight. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Madrid!

It looks cute. However, the experience was not good. The waiters seem stressed even though the place was half empty. I requested a table for one and I was ignored while they accommodated people that arrived after (they take no reservations and the whole lower floor was empty). The food was ok but forgettable. Very lame flat white, eggs and bacon were like in any ordinary cafeteria.
Joe Robinsmith★★★★★
Made it before it got really busy. Food was out very quickly. The Andalusian breakfast with Iberian ham on whole wheat with grated tomato was incredibly delicious. The natural breakfast of yogurt with fruits and seeds was so tasty. Cappuccino was piled high with foamy milk. Loved it.

Great breakfast spot in Madrid! Excellent coffee, delicious pastries, and a cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend🥰

Very affordable price with good breakfast, simple and makes you full! It’s a hidden gem in the city center if you want to have some traditional breakfast without paying 20 euros
Maria Mendieta★☆☆☆☆
Maybe I came on a bad day, but the food was terrible. I ordered the Desayuno Americano and it was barely edible. The “bacon” was just heated up slices of ham, so salty it was inedible for me. The scrambled eggs were just ok. The toast was tough and over toasted. The coffee was burnt and again barely drinkable. The juice was fine. The bacon/ham was actually barely cooked at first and I had to send it back. (Attached picture is of the bacon AFTER they refried it, still looks terrible). No apology. Overall very disappointing. Do not recommend at all.

Amazing confiteria and pasteleria! High quality products made and baked in store at very reasonable prices. Must try the alfajors with a cafe con leche!
Oliver Madden★★★★★
This is what you find when you stray off the touristy, beaten path. A really traditional, freshly made delight. Wonderful pastries and confectionery. A nice strong coffee and a view into the kitchen where the magic happens. We accidentally stumbled upon this place, and it was the delicious smell emanating from the doorway that led us inside and eventually devoured apple pie, some sort of caramel pastry and a cheesecake washed down with a simple coffee. Don't go here! Leave it for us and the locals 😉
Lulu Lemon★★★★★
If you’re anywhere near this spot, skip your hotel breakfast and come here instead. Pastelería America is an absolute gem. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating—you feel welcomed the moment you walk in, like you’ve been coming here for years. The food? Outstanding. We had the empanadas de carne, which were perfectly seasoned and flaky, a café con leche that was honestly to die for, and an alfajor that might be the best I’ve ever had. Everything is made from scratch, and you can taste the difference in every bite. It’s a family-owned bakery, and that care and pride show up in both the food and the service. We actually paid for breakfast next door at Meliá Casa de las Artes—and this place was infinitely better. No comparison. Do yourself a favor: come here instead.

I highly recommend the baked eggs at this restaurant; they are truly innovative and delicious. The mushroom variety is particularly noteworthy, as it offers a delightful experience akin to Alfredo sauce, but with eggs instead of chicken. Additionally, I must say that I enjoyed one of the best coffees I’ve ever had there. It was so exceptional that I considered purchasing extra coffee to take home. Unfortunately, they do not sell coffee beans, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant for brunch, as it offers a unique and satisfying dining experience.

We Tried baked eggs with mushrooms / specials with sweet potato and baked egg with ham. The portion size is more than enough for one. Waiters were lovely. Had to wait a bit but overall great breakfast.

We enjoyed our lunch at cafe Prado. The food was delicious and a great way to take a break in the middle of our full day visiting the Prado.

The cakes are really good, but the coffees have to be much much better. The order line, you wait about 10 minutes. You bring and take away the tray with the order yourself. The prices are higher than the average because it is a cafe in a museum.

We were delighted with what we found inside the museum. Food quality in the restaurant (not the cafe part but the part with table cloth & waiter service) much better than expected. Service was good too. It was a delight to find as we didn’t need to venture out in the middle of our 8 hours stay inside the Prado.
Travelin Gal★★★★★
Don’t be turned off by the negative reviews. This is an excellent museum cafe and we’ve eaten in plenty of them. Ate there twice while visiting the Prado on two different days and both times the food was excellent. Fantastic Caesar Salad with grilled chicken, with small strips of bacon, cheese, tomatoes, and more, tossed with a delicious dressing. My husband enjoyed a ham & cheese sandwich made on crusty bread, like a mini baguette. Sparkling water to drink. For dessert we tried the carrot cake. It was freshly made and not too sugary sweet; the icing was light and creamy plus it was served at room temperature so that the full flavors came through. Two days later we ate in the Prado Museum cafe again, in the late afternoon on a Monday, experiencing excellent food and service. My husband and I split a pastrami sandwich with greens (rocket?), cheese, pickles, mustard/mayo, on brioche, and lightly warmed up - it was so good! Fresh pressed orange juice was not bitter and tasted like it was just pressed. For dessert, we split a slice of lemon cake that was room temperature and like homemade. The coffees with hot milk were excellent. We both agreed the cafe food was delicious at this world class museum and next time we want to try its restaurant. We ate inside with real cutlery and plates, saucers and cups. Not sure why some posts have pictures of paper cups. This is a review of the Prado Museum Cafe inside the museum, after paying for entry and passing through security.

The chocolate and almond croissant was absolutely delicious, never had anything like that! We also tried the orange donut buscuit and almond/ chocolate biscuits that were crispy, light and full of flavour. I regret not having bought more to take home. Santo has quietly become part of my routine. The bread is easily the best you’ll find in town. I already have my favorites (the cardamom bun and the canelé), but honestly, the best thing you can do is let yourself try something new each time. Walk in, breathe in the smell of fresh bread, pick something you’ve never had before, and enjoy it slowly. The staff are lovely and there’s a real warmth here, not just from the ovens. And the pastries… truly to die for.

This Panadería is a Hidden Gem in Madrid. Employees were truly kind and had better words that I have encountered for understanding their food. Quality is so invaluable. Texture was Crispy and buttery but not greasy and lean.

I’ve been here 3 times and every time the service has been absolutely lovely. I appreciate that they take their time with each customer to answer questions, give recommendations, and make comfortable conversation. Besides the amazing workers, their pastries and bread are top tier. I’m writing this after eating the Za’atar, Feta, and Sesame roll and I’m stunned. The coquito with the coconut and coffee combination also pleasantly surprised me. I don’t think you can go wrong with anything here.

BEST PLACE IN MADRID TO BUY BREAD. Simply that. Plus empanadas, embutidos from León and Galicia, some selected cheeses, muffins, canned food. It really deserves a visit and buying an hogaza de trigo de 1 kg, you can buy it sliced then freeze it and you will have great bread with olive oil every morning. I recommend together with salt D'Estrenc.
Kayla N★★★★☆
Got the Tarta de Santiago, which was really good but also had an unexpected lemon-y flavor to it. It also wasn’t as dense as I thought it would be, and seemed to lack a strong almond flavor, but overall it was really good and would get again! Disclaimer: I added my own raspberries to this, it doesn’t not come with lol

I got a Calamari sandwich from another place but I knew that wasn't going to be as satisfying for me because I am not a huge calamari guy so I saw a place with pastries in their glass counters. This place was called Museo del Pan Gallego. Looking for a savory snack I saw they had the Spanish Empanadas. The one I ordered was the Tuna but they also had egg, meat and a couple other options. The only interesting thing was there was no lights on lol. I took my order to go and enjoyed it in front of the Royal Palace.

Empanada is spot on just like the way we make it at home. Lovely little spot frequented by the older locals. Go here every time we are in Madrid. It's not the cheapest bakery- but love the atmosphere and they deserve to make a living!

Good service, offered a variety of bread yet just less choices than other equivalent Granier for pastries and desserts. Ordered tea and the plate was dirty with something looks like previous chocolate leftover. Understanding the location is on a busy Madrid street, yet the washroom needs to be cleaned regularly please. Its cleanliness simply reflects how clean is the kitchen too. Enough said.

Good bakery too many options it’s open on Christmas days also Recommend hot chocolate Italian style reach The staff talk English easy to order

I’m an English speaker who speaks very limited Spanish but wants to improve. I want to recognize an employee at this Granier who spoke perfectly good English but patiently listened to me when I spoke in Spanish and replied to me slowly and in simple Spanish so that I could understand her. The next day she smiled and patiently helped me practice again. It was very patient and kind of her and I really appreciated it.

I was visiting Madrid and took my breakfast twice in Granier. They say they have cheap menus but they catch you in the midlines. In the first day I ordered a café con leche (coffee with a bit of milk) and some pastries. They say they have a menu of café + pastries, but as I ordered café con leche it ended up being more than 1€ more expensive (1€ for a bit of milk...). In the second day I returned and tried a new approach: I ordered a café solo (the one in the menu) and a croissant (they have a menu with café + croissant) but the waitress (rude as hell) asked me if I wanted the croissant simple or with cheese and ham. I asked if the simple one would come with some jelly and she said no, so I asked for the other one but only with cheese. In the end that wasn't part of the menu and they took me 5€ for a café solo and a damn croissant with cheese. Only after I pay the waitress said it didn't matter the croissant was just with cheese or if it had ham, it would cost exactly the same. Resume: I'm not coming to this place again and if you don't want to be stolen nor be treated like a tourist, neither should you. (The only good thing is that they have good variety of pastries)

Tips for Enjoying Bakeries Near the Prado

To make the most of your culinary detour, it helps to understand the rhythm of Madrid’s bakery culture. The Spanish approach to baked goods is deeply tied to specific times of the day, and knowing these customs will vastly improve your experience. Whether you are a coffee purist or a sugar enthusiast, these practical tips will help you navigate the counters like a seasoned local rather than a lost tourist.

Go Early for the Best Selection
Unlike some cities where bakeries bake throughout the day, many traditional Spanish bakeries bake in the early morning hours. If you want the freshest napolitanas, croissants, or bread loaves, aim to arrive between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. By the late afternoon, the most popular items are often sold out, leaving only the drier options behind.

Understand the "Desayuno" vs. "Merienda"
Breakfast (desayuno) in Madrid is usually a sweet affair—think pastries dipped in coffee or hot chocolate. However, the late afternoon snack (merienda) is when bakeries really shine. Around 5:30 PM, locals flock to pastry shops for a sweet treat to hold them over until the late Spanish dinner, which rarely starts before 9:30 PM.

Don’t Skip the Savory Options
While the Prado area is famous for sweets, many bakeries also excel at savory pastries. Look for empanadas, mini quiches, or "palmeras" (both sweet and savory). These are perfect for a quick, budget-friendly lunch that doesn’t require sitting down at a crowded tapas bar during peak hours.

Ask for "Pan de Masa Madre"
If you are a bread lover, seek out bakeries that advertise "masa madre" (sourdough). In recent years, Madrid has seen a surge in artisan bread workshops. These loaves are denser, more flavorful, and far superior to the airy, white "barras" found in supermarkets. It is the perfect base for a picnic in the nearby Retiro Park.

Respect the Siesta (and Monday Closures)
While the area around the Prado is touristic, many traditional, family-run bakeries still observe the sacred Spanish lunch break. Don’t be surprised if a shop closes from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Furthermore, many artisan bakeries and pastry chefs take Monday as their day of rest, so always check the specific opening hours before making a special trip.

Madrid is a city that lives in the streets, and there is no better way to fuel that lifestyle than with a paper bag full of warm pastry or a crusty loaf of bread. The proximity of these bakeries to the Prado offers a rare opportunity to blend high culture with high gastronomy.

After you have had your fill of art, finding a quiet bench in the nearby botanical gardens or the Retiro Park with a local pastry is the perfect way to decompress. The combination of world-class art and traditional Spanish baking creates a sensory experience that defines the very essence of Madrid.
