After an early morning spent admiring the timeless works of Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco, the only logical next step is to find a meal worthy of the experience. The area surrounding the Museo Nacional del Prado is not just Madrid’s artistic heart; it is also a vibrant culinary landscape waiting to be explored.
Whether you are visiting the city for the first time or you are a local playing tour guide, the neighborhoods of Barrio de las Letras, Jerónimos, and Retiro offer a diverse array of morning dining options. From traditional Spanish tortillas to modern brunch spreads, the streets radiating from the museum are packed with high-quality establishments.
However, navigating a city famous for its late-night dining culture can be tricky for early risers. While many Spanish kitchens don’t open for lunch until 1:30 PM, the demand for breakfast and brunch near the Prado has created a thriving niche of restaurants that open their doors much earlier.
This guide focuses on places that prioritize quality ingredients, authentic atmosphere, and proximity to the museum. You won’t have to wander far with a growling stomach; the best tables are often hidden just a few blocks away from the Paseo del Prado.
We have curated a list that balances the traditional with the contemporary. Whether you need a quick espresso and a pastry to fuel a day of sightseeing, or you prefer a leisurely brunch with eggs benedict and fresh juice, there is a spot here for you.
Below, you will find a selection of ten exceptional spots that consistently deliver great food and service. Each one offers a unique take on the first meal of the day, ensuring you can find the perfect fit for your mood and budget.

I highly recommend the baked eggs at this restaurant; they are truly innovative and delicious. The mushroom variety is particularly noteworthy, as it offers a delightful experience akin to Alfredo sauce, but with eggs instead of chicken. Additionally, I must say that I enjoyed one of the best coffees I’ve ever had there. It was so exceptional that I considered purchasing extra coffee to take home. Unfortunately, they do not sell coffee beans, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant for brunch, as it offers a unique and satisfying dining experience.
Deniz Deniz★★★★★
We Tried baked eggs with mushrooms / specials with sweet potato and baked egg with ham.
The portion size is more than enough for one. Waiters were lovely. Had to wait a bit but overall great breakfast.
Donna Li★★★★★
Busy vibe. The baked eggs are delicious. The salmon toasty is so good. Strongly recommended! Also the homemade peanut butter toast is so unique. the roasted peanut with honey and banana perfectly matched.

I love it! And definitely must have the baked eggs!
Is a must! You will regret if you skip it!
Thanks for a wonderful yummy breakfast!
It brightened my day in Madrid

One of the best eggs Benedict I’ve had! Perfectly cooked poached eggs. The miso and sichuan oil were a great combination and can’t miss it. We also had the avocado toast with truffle sauce which was great as well. The açaí smoothie was fresh and refreshing too. We ended with an almond cake which was awesome, highly recommend this place!
Kremena Ivanova★★★★★
Absolutely loved this place! The atmosphere was wonderful, warm and welcoming, and our waitress was absolutely lovely and made the whole experience even better. She was so friendly, attentive and kind.
I had the bacon sandwich and it was absolutely delicious — fresh, flavorful and perfectly prepared. I would definitely come back and highly recommend this place! ❤️
Kamakshi Matai★★★★★
Thanks Jason for the brilliant service. The Cantonese style scrambled eggs were some of the best I’ve ever had and the ‘soft’ cortado as this cafe cutely calls it was perfection. Brazilian coffee beans brewed just right. Come a bit earlier in the day so you don’t need to wait in line. Interiors are also so charming.
Brianna Pedraza★★★★★
Busy restaurant and there can be a line, but don’t stress and don’t let that deter you from waiting. The wait doesn’t take long! The service here is fantastic, quick and genuine. Very good food and coffee as well. We were very happy with this place and would came back! Thanks to server Cami for helping us have a good experience here

Beautiful place with a truly magical atmosphere. I absolutely loved the interior design, the vibe, and the overall feeling of the space. It is one of those places where you instantly feel relaxed and want to stay longer. The staff and service were also excellent, very friendly and attentive.
We especially loved the matcha with coconut water. It was delicious and definitely something I would order again.
As for the food, it was just okay. We tried the scrambled eggs with avocado and the eggs Benedict. The brunch dishes were decent, but not particularly memorable. Still, I would definitely come back for the atmosphere and would love to try some of the pastries or cakes next time.

Elena Sandru★★☆☆☆
We went there as a couple only looking for some great cocktails (one of their strongest points) and sweets.
Ainoha who served us was very accommodating and willing to go above and beyond. 5 stars for her.
What we did not appreciate - hence my low rating:
- we had to wait at least 20 minutes. For good restaurants that’s understandable. However there were 4 seats available upstairs (two at the bar, two at a free table). 5 people waiting before us, none of them seated - nor us - at these free seats. When we finally got seated downstairs there were two other free tables with 4 more free seats.
- the cocktail guy (or girl 🤍) was free today. So they had no cocktails. Unacceptable for such a busy place in the middle of Madrid
- we had two of the menu’s stars: the pistachio pancakes and the cinnamon rolls. The pancakes were a disappointment for me - three pancakes, good looking, with a bit of pistachio frosting and icecream on top. But tasteless otherwise. I would not recommend. I appreciated the roll - very sweet for my husband yet ok for me.
- very difficult to drink coffee out of the very nice looking cups
I would definitely not recommend nor come again.

This breakfast spot was absolutely incredible!! We just needed a place that opened early before we left for the airport, and we were very happy for an 8am opening. My daughter had the burger (yes, for breakfast, and she wasn’t the only one!) and I had the French toast. I didn’t get to taste the burger because it was completely gone before I had a chance to ask for a bite. But the French toast, besides the beautiful display, came with a little scoop of ice cream that nicely replaced the need for syrup, plus fresh strawberries and blueberries and a caramelized banana. The details were so nicely done. Even my cappuccino was so beautifully crafted! I cannot recommend this place enough. Every food item that came out to other tables looks delicious and I’m sending my other daughter here when she studies in Madrid next semester!
Juan Campo★★★★☆
It’s a popular tourist spot, so it’s usually bustling with visitors, partly because of its reputation and the hype surrounding it. The atmosphere is lively, but it definitely feels quite touristy.
The food is decent overall, although the menu leans heavily toward desserts. One thing I didn’t particularly like is their practice of encouraging customers to leave a five-star review at the end of the meal. When it seems to be a standard part of the experience, it takes away some of the authenticity and usefulness of the reviews when deciding whether to visit. The approach to tipping also felt a bit excessive.
Overall, the food is decent, but considering the crowds and potential wait, I’m not sure the experience is worth the hype.
Sarah Dettmann★★★★★
Brunch here ! Such a good spot. Amazing food, service, and I loved the vibes/ decor.
The salmon Benedict was super fresh, and the potato waffle with truffle mushroom is a must if you love mushrooms. The Pistachio Obsession café was creamy, aesthetic, and honestly so good.
Alejandro gave great service, friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Would definitely go back.
The Foodie Crusader★★★★★
This place had a bit of a wait, but i think it was worth it. Its very nice and cozy inside. The staff is nice and friendly. The food was excellent. The latte was delicious. The Spanish omelet was super yummy. It basically reminds me of potatoes au gratin wrapped with a thin sheet of egg. I got mine with pork belly and it was delicious and filling for me. We ordered the French toast by mistake but it worked out for us. It was absolutely delicious. The toast was soft, sweet, and flavorful, the ice cream and fresh berries made it all come together nicely. The prices are reasonable. I would definitely come back, and i would make this a must visit.

Food is ok but a bit flavorless. What struck me was the service . People working there seem like they really hate it so the experience declines enormously. There was no soup or toilette paper in the bathroom. Coffee was good

Great food, atmosphere, service was great and the servers were nice. The best French toast I ever had.

Highly recommended.

Cutest cafe. Very welcoming. The coffee was yum and we got the most adorable designs on the coffee. We also asked for a personalised one as a memory for our girls trip and were surprised with an amazing design. Definitely recommended if your in Madrid 🤌🏼

This café has that cute, cozy, local vibe. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the staff were very kind and friendly. It has a warm, simple, "homey" atmosphere! Natural pear and lemon juice, a delicacy. We served Tortilla de patatas hecha con huevos amperos, pan con tomate y ensaladita.❤️
Lynn Tan★★★★★
This is a charming cute cafe with lovely food, nice ambience, good value for money & a very friendly host. The potato leek cold soup and quinoa salad is amazing, and the fish pie was simply delish. To pair that with sangria / tinto de verano tops it all.
Dimitri Katsabanis★★★★★
Pristine service from Fernando, followed by the best lentil soup I’ve had in my life! The most unique thing here is the revolving menu on a daily basis. This component made me feel like I was 8 years old again at my Abuela’s house. Everything we ordered was simply majestic and this is a place that deserves much more accolades.
Amit Pradhan★★★★★
We went to Matilda after reading the reviews and will say that this place does surprise you . The food quality , taste and preparation is top class. We managed to get a table as we went in early but I can tell you that it is frequented by locals and tourists alike . We had avocado toast and a Spanish omelette and both were top class. Will definitely recommend to people visiting that area.
michel lavigne★★★★★
What a nice gem to find. It is a small cozy place. The waiter was wounderful a spoke very well English and French. He was paying attention to every little detail to make sure we had an extraordinary experience (which we had). We started with salad and gazpacho. I normally am not crazy about gazpacho but this one had watermelon in it, which intrigued me. What a great discovery!!! It was absolutely delicious and refreshing. We also had meat balls in tomato sauce and ham. Food & service were extraordinary. Very well priced and potions are generous. Best sangria I ever had. We were too full for desserts that looked fabulous on other tables. A must go place in Madrid

Great breakfast / brunch option in Salamanca. We had to wait a bit in line (~20 mins), but it was worth it, and the host did everything he could to speed things up for us.
The food didn't just look good - we enjoyed it a lot - and the coffee was great as well (super important for coffee lovers like us). Would definitely recommend
chanelle mwale★★★★★
There was a slight queue to get in her but the wait was well worth it, delicious meal with generous servings at good value for money. The staff were super friendly and helpful and the service was quick. The brunch itself was fresh, nice mix of fruit on the plate and french toast was thick and fluffy. I would recommend here to tourists and non spanish speakers as the staff was patient with me when i tried ordering in spanish. All in all a great breakfast and delicious coffee!
Amel MANSOUR★★★★★
The food was really good especially the guacamole !! Best brunch in Madrid for sure. The place is clean and pretty. Also the staff is nice and chatty too. Truly recommend this place. Muchas gracias por todo 😉
Allie Hult★★★☆☆
The food and drinks seem pretty good, but they’re also very pricey. I had the acai bowl, which was still pretty frozen (albeit tasty), and the lavender and vanilla latte, which was amazing. It’s a cute locale but very small, and the workers and environment are extremely insistent on not using a computer and having you leave quickly. This is the kind of place you want to go to so you can post about it on social media once, not the kind of place to become a regular at.
Nina Gírethová★★★★☆
Food was amazing and the atmosphere was really cozy. They also had great gluten-free options, which we really appreciated.
However, the service let it down. We were still finishing our drinks after about 40 minutes when we were told there was a queue outside and asked to leave if we weren’t ordering more, which felt quite rushed.
Overall, great food and vibe, but the service made the experience less enjoyable.

Absolutely best salmon eggs Benedict ever. The coconut smoothie was delicious as well; I drank it sooo fast. 10/10 service and cutest seating areas. Loved getting a seat by the window and being able to have brunch with a gorgeous view. Perfect place to stop by after touring the palace!

Very good breakfast and brunch with fresh, quality ingredients and well-prepared dishes. The pastries and coffee were excellent, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. A great place to start the day, and one I’d happily visit again.

We were rushing to get to the Royal Palace on Tuesday morning and we were in dire need of some breakfast after a long day of travel the night before. We looked up some reviews and saw this place at a 4.9 and I honestly think it should have a perfect five. We had what we thought was the best breakfast we had in our 18 days of Europe here. The food was absolutely delicious, freshly cooked, presented well, And very tasty. The service was quick and once we told the waiter that we were in a rush, we were in and out in about 40 min, which is exactly what we needed to do. There are only about 15 tables in the restaurant and it is a small intimate venue but the location is almost perfect if you're looking for a place to stop or visiting the Royal Palace of Madrid. Definitely consider it if you are in the area.
Jacky Wu★★★★★
The food was absolutely delicious and full of authentic Vietnamese flavor. The pho was rich and comforting, the spring rolls were fresh and crispy, and the service was warm and attentive. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, and everything felt clean and welcoming. I really enjoyed my dining experience here and would definitely come back again. Highly recommended!

This place is so famous in Madrid. The dishes are simply perfect, they have the right balance between softness and consistency, making them absolutely irresistible. Plus, the taste is incredible and really so high quality on the ingredients
The atmosphere is so chill, and the service is friendly. One of the best pancake experiences I’ve ever had. Highly recommended! When I return to Madrid, I’ll definitely visit again.

Came here for brunch a while back and we both ordered the eggs Benedict with a coffee and a chai latte.
The eggs Benedict were of decent quality but nothing too special in terms of flavour. The coffee was of decent quality but the chai latte was a massive disappointment.
Imagine warm milk with a "hint" or cinnamon. That is NOT what a chai latte is, nor what it's about. I sincerely recommend proper training in making a chai latte or taking this off the menu.
For the Matcha lovers amongst us. They have a bigbag of Matcha on the shelves next to the coffee, not kept in the fridge or freezer. So judging on their way of storage, it'll probably not that great.
Service is good and quite quick, the quality of the food is very clean but like I stated above: lacks a punch.
It was a good experience overall and a nice place to have brunch, but here are definitely better cafes in the area. 4 stars due to nice service.
Bakir Deljkovic★★★★★
Delicious brunch and outstanding service. Everything was fresh, beautifully presented and full of flavor. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making it the perfect place to relax and enjoy a great meal. Easily one of the best specialty coffee spots I’ve visited in Madrid. Highly recommended.
Michael jones★★★☆☆
Came to this restaurant from the reviews on here. We was left disappointed. Understaffed so the service was slow waited a good while to receive the drinks. The food was boring and bland. The salad that accommodated the eggs was just shredded lettuce. Soggy chips/crisps. Coffee tasted off. When we brought up the issues with the staff who passed it on to the manager. Nothing was done, no apology or anything.
We half ate the meals and drinks.
I wouldn’t waste your time here
Alon Ehrenlieb★★★★★
Amazing atmosphere!
Very cozy, new, and well-designed coffee/brunch place.
I had the eggs Benedict, which was really good.
The waitress was also very nice.
Highly recommend this place 🙂
Came on Monday at 12:00 PM - the place was full, but a table was still available.
They also gave me free cookie for valentines 💘
Tina G★☆☆☆☆
The coffee here is excellent, genuinely one of the best I’ve had in Madrid.
I actually ordered a second one because it was that good.
Unfortunately, the breakfast was very disappointing for the price. I ordered the Eggs Benedict with salmon for €15, but the portion was very small, especially the salmon. There were only a few small pieces, with some spinach, eggs and bread. For €15 in Madrid, I expected a much more generous and satisfying plate.
I would definitely come back for the coffee, but I wouldn’t order breakfast here again unless the portion and value improved.

OMG. This place is so nice. Came here for Sunday brunch at 1:15pm. It was busy but there were several tables free. I was sat immediately.

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great breakfast spot in Madrid, and I’ll certainly be coming back!
Madalina M.★★★★★
Great place for brunch, will go again. The food is really good, the ingredients are fresh and high quality. The staff is nice, very polite. The atmosphere is typical brunch place, full around the time we went, 11-12, but no wait time as 1 table seem to always be free as soon as new people came. I would also like to mention that the coffee is surprisingly good, most brunch places have average coffee, but this one has such good coffee you would think it's the main product. Congrats to the entire team for the work ethic and attention to details. P.S. They have pictures for the food and it comes looking exactly like the pictures.
Katie May★★★★★
The BEST brunch spot! The special for 20€ had so much food that you could probably share with another person. Everything was so fresh, portions were great, and coffee was fantastic.
Alexandra Carremans★★★★★
Lovely place for brunch, I had the kimchi bagel with chicken. Best bagel I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot. On the menu you can scan a Qr code for pictures of each dish, and it will come out looking as beautiful as on the picture. 10/10 recommend.
Essential Tips for Dining Near the Prado
Dining in Madrid follows a rhythm that is unique to Spain, and knowing the local customs can significantly improve your experience. To help you navigate the breakfast and brunch scene like a local rather than a tourist, consider the following practical advice before you set out.
Plan for the Spanish Schedule: While the places listed here cater to international brunch hours, traditional Spanish breakfast spots usually peak between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. If you want a lively, local atmosphere, arrive before 11:00 AM. If you prefer a quieter, more relaxed brunch, aim for right when they open or after the 1:00 PM rush.
Look for the "Menú del Día" Alternative: If you sleep in and find yourself hungry closer to noon, you are in a perfect position. Many of the sit-down restaurants near the Prado pivot from breakfast to their "Menú del Día" (Menu of the Day) around 1:00 PM. This is often the best value in the city, offering a starter, main course, dessert, and a drink for a fixed price.
Don’t Skip the "Tostada con Tomate": While pancakes and avocado toast are tempting, you cannot leave Madrid without trying a traditional "tostada con tomate." It is simply toasted bread rubbed with fresh garlic and ripe tomato, drizzled with high-quality olive oil, and sprinkled with sea salt. It is the perfect light fuel for walking through the museum.
Check for Weekday Closures: Many family-run and boutique cafes in the Barrio de las Letras observe a rest day, typically Monday or Tuesday. Unlike the museum, which has its own schedule, restaurants often close to recover from the weekend. Always check the current hours on their Google Business Profile or social media before walking a long distance.
Ask for the "Zumo Natural": When ordering juice, be aware that "zumo" can mean either fresh-squeezed or bottled. If you want the good stuff, specifically ask for "zumo natural" (fresh squeezed orange juice). It is a staple of the Spanish breakfast table and worth the slight price difference.
The area surrounding the Museo Nacional del Prado is a feast for both the eyes and the palate. By choosing a dining spot that values local ingredients and hospitality, you extend the cultural experience beyond the gallery walls and into the streets of Madrid.
Whether you settle for a quick espresso at a standing bar or indulge in a multi-course brunch, taking the time to eat well is an essential part of the travel experience. Fuel up properly, and you will have all the energy you need to explore the nearby Retiro Park, the Thyssen-Bornemisza, or simply wander the historic streets.
