12 Best Bakeries Near Mercado de San Miguel

Right in the beating heart of Madrid’s historic center, Mercado de San Miguel draws millions of visitors each year with its glittering tapas counters, wine bars, and buzzing atmosphere. It is one of the city’s most beloved gastronomic landmarks, yet even the most devoted food lover occasionally craves a quiet corner, a buttery croissant, or a crusty loaf of bread.

Just steps beyond the market’s iron-and-glass facade, a world of traditional ovens, artisan pastry chefs, and neighborhood panaderías awaits. These bakeries have been feeding locals, tourists, and late-night revelers for decades, often using recipes passed down through generations. They offer everything from sugar-dusted napolitanas and flaky palmiers to rustic sourdough and gluten-free treats.

Because the area around Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol is so compact, you can easily hop from one bakery to the next on foot. The challenge is knowing which ones are truly worth your time and euros. That is where this guide comes in, helping you separate the standout pastry shops from the forgettable tourist traps.

The bakeries near Mercado de San Miguel reflect Madrid’s layered food culture. You will find classic Spanish breakfast spots serving café con leche and toasted bread with tomato, alongside modern patisseries experimenting with French technique and Japanese-inspired flavors. Some have been family-run since the early 20th century, while others are newer arrivals redefining what a Madrid bakery can be.

Quality varies dramatically in such a high-traffic tourist zone. A bakery that looks charming from the outside may rely on frozen dough and industrial fillings. Others, however, remain fiercely committed to slow fermentation, seasonal fruit, and real butter. Knowing the difference can transform a simple snack into one of the best bites of your trip.

The following list is built around first-hand visits, local reputation, and consistency over time. Each entry prioritizes flavor, freshness, and that hard-to-define feeling of stepping into a place that genuinely cares about its craft. Whether you want a quick breakfast before sightseeing or a box of pastries to enjoy in Plaza Mayor, you will find a worthy option here.

Use this guide as your starting point, but do not be afraid to wander. Part of the joy of Madrid is discovering a tiny bakery tucked down a cobblestone side street, the smell of warm sugar pulling you through the door before you even realize where your feet are taking you.

An excellent bakery near Plaza del Opera on a quiet street. Chef Trabanco is a true craftsman. His creations are beautiful and expertly prepared. So good with the perfect balance of flavors and texture. And he's a super nice guy! The bakery itself is a nice quiet spot away from the tourist spots (and the tourists).

Inside Santa Eulalia gives you the feeling like being in “little Paris”, with cozy old-world decor, books, plants, and exposed brick walls. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you can really feel the care behind the place. The pastries and breads are clearly top quality, made with great ingredients and a lot of attention to detail. I had an excellent cortado with a DELICIOUS hazelnuts bun, the cakes and the breads looked incredible. Service was very friendly and English speaking. The space is quite spacious and with WiFi so you can enjoy the coffee and the pastries and also work there.

Excellent place to enjoy a sweet and also they have brunch with eggs! The sweets are just incredible! (Especially pain au chocolates with pistachio and chocolate) Also coffee was good and eggs were really good portion! Totally recommended!
Dhoha Rashed Alshalawi★★★★☆
Loved the sweets, but not the coffee. The cappuccino didn’t taste like a proper cappuccino—it was more like instant coffee and lacked foam. The coffee bar could be more organized and cleaner, especially since the main seating area is right in front of it. On the positive side, the staff are sweet, kind, and provide good service. The decoration and overall vibe of the place are authentic, and the location is great.

A pastry lovers delight. I was pretty sure I wanted to get only their famous chocolate napolitana and it did not disappoint.. decadent chocolate cake (ish) inside a buttery airy puff pastry. Heaven in a bite. Not too sweet and perfect for some one like me who doesnot have a sweet tooth. They have huge lines but they move pretty fast. So dont give up. Also there is no chance of them being sold out since they keep bringing out freshly baked goods. Good place to even bring back baked gifts for friends and family. Centrally located at Puerta del Sol. Highly recommend this spot.

La Mallorquina is a lovely café with delicious cakes, especially the Ensaimada. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Definitely a nice place to enjoy a sweet treat.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Visiting La Mallorquina is stepping into a living piece of Madrid’s culinary history. Located in the heart of Puerta del Sol, this iconic pastry shop delivers not only exceptional quality but also tradition and charm that have endured for generations. Their pastries are simply outstanding, fresh, delicate, and crafted with precision. The napolitanas, ensaimadas, and classic Spanish pastries are rich in flavor, perfectly balanced, and absolutely unforgettable. The aroma alone invites you in, and every bite confirms why this place has remained a beloved institution for so long. Whether paired with a coffee or enjoyed on their own, their creations reflect true mastery of traditional Spanish pastry. The service is efficient despite the constant flow of visitors, a testament to its popularity and reputation. La Mallorquina is more than a pastry shop, it is part of Madrid’s identity. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates tradition, authenticity, and exceptional sweets.

04/04 西班牙人擠爆的麵包店,點了一個可頌,點餐要直接跟店員喊 The Pastelería La Mallorquina - Sol is one of the most famous traditional pastry shops in Madrid, located directly at the Puerta del Sol, one of the city’s busiest and most central squares. Founded in 1894, La Mallorquina has become an iconic stop for both locals and visitors seeking classic Spanish pastries in a historic setting. It is especially known for its elegant ground-floor pastry counter and its upstairs café, where customers can sit and enjoy views over the bustling Puerta del Sol. Signature items include napolitanas de chocolate (chocolate-filled pastries), palmeras, milhojas, and a variety of traditional cakes and baked goods. The pastries are typically rich, buttery, and made in the classic Madrid confectionery style. Today, La Mallorquina remains one of Madrid’s most recognizable pastry institutions, valued for its central location, long history, and consistent quality, making it a popular stop for a quick breakfast, afternoon coffee, or sweet break while exploring the city center.

Loved La Mallorquina 🎀 Such a cute bakery with a cozy vibe. We had breakfast here and everything was amazing. The croissants were huge, soft, and slightly sweet, and the Napolitana (especially the cream and chocolate one) was a highlight. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Madrid!

Worst customer behaviour seen at any tourist place. Asked gently to try an icecream before buying. The rude lady clearly said no and then said may be pay before you can try. As if I will run away after trying and not buy anything from the store. Icecream flavours look attractive but found way better taste elsewhere.

It was almost the end of the day at 1030pm. There were not much left. We got almond croissants and cheese&ham croissants which were on sale for end of the day. Because they looked so good we wanted to get them for breakfast next day. We also got Churros and Horchata. Churros were excellent, crunchy and soft, perfect texture. We didn’t want the chocolate dip to go with it, just plain. It was yummy all by itself. By the time we got home, we ate the almond croissants, they were so delicious with lots of almond fillings, creamy and almondy, and lots of flakes on top to make it all worth it. We really enjoyed the pastries and would love to visit an actual store at an earlier hour for more variety. Staff were friendly and quick.

Chocolate gelato was smooth and creamy. The vanilla on the other hand had freezer burn and ice crystals. We had to toss it in the garbage. We told the employees and they listened.

We tried cookie (nothing special) and a cheesecake cookie dessert which was phenomenal. We tried all three flavors (praline, pistachio, gianduja) and they were all delicious. The place is quite crowded but the service is quick.

The service is incredible ! They gave us free churros and were so sweet. Update: I just tried my hot chocolate and it was to die for. And I am not exaggerating. My friend and I were in shock. We have never experienced anything like it before. You can’t make this kind of stuff up.

A hidden gem in Spain, all freshly made by the owners themselves. The Turkish tea and coffee is extraordinary and you can barely choose what to eat. So many options that you need to come back to taste them all. Kadayif, baclava but also all the amazing cookies tastes like the original.

Delicious real Turkish delights! Excellent service, warm atmosphere, and a lovely place to take a relaxing break from the city center chaos. Highly recommended! Will come back

Great place to try the Turkish delights and desert options. Also you can have a Turkish style breakfast with simit and pogaca; which are again Turkish salty pastries. Delicious deserts that are made one by one, by hands that give incredible taste. Also as you try these many delicious options, you can also buy many souvenirs for your loved ones, from Madrid. Definitely visit this shop, with people so nice; they will make you feel at home; have your coffee with the great baklavas and all the other delights..

This place is amazing! I cannot say enough good things about their service. The honey cake (Medovnik) is absolutely delicious, and don’t even get me started on their delicious ginger mojito… WOW! Nany and Cary certainly added to the greatness of my trip to Madrid. A must-visit when in Madrid! Highly recommend!

Everything delicious!! Especially the juices and the acai! All natural and fresh. Highly recommended, also staff super friendly 🙏❤️
Priyanka Tolia★★★★★
If I could give them 10 stars, I would. Their staff is so patient and friendly. We being vegetarians generally have limited choices and on top of that, it’s hard to find good food in a place where meat eaters have more options. Their staff took such good care of us, explained the options well and served us the most delicious avocado sandwich ever. Their cappuccino was equally amazing. Although they didn’t have chips on their menu but when I asked, they gave us complimentary chips and refused to charge for it. In a place and location that’s full of tourists and patience generally runs thin, this place offered great food and customer service when they could easily go the other way!

Lovely coffee shop in the heart of Madrid de las Austrias District. This clean, quaint cafe has a decent selection of fresh cakes and serves them in generous portions. It's reasonably priced and the service is professional, friendly and always with a smile. I highly recommend the lemon meringue pie.

Now this is a place that not only looks good but also taste excellent. Baclava was fresh and crunchy! They made the best coffee as well and all was at a reasonable price. Absolutely delicious! 😍 The baklava was amazing, and the chocolate-covered treats filled with nuts were incredibly tasty. You can really tell they use high-quality ingredients. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully made. I’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommended!

I tried baklava kunafa for the first time and it was great! They heated it up with steam which softened the bottom and made it better. For 4,68€ I think it’s quite steep though.

What a wonderful experience, special thanks to the young lady in the store, Mrs. Razban. She was so professional, and a great help to make some nice souvenir boxes for our family. She speaks great English, is enthousiastic about the products and also very polite. We also enjoyed it at our Airbnb with some tea to have a taste. We went back several times during our holidays. She even organised our choices by type so it would stay fresh, so much care! The price is good, better than Turkey!

Homely atmosphere and solid coffee. It seems to me that not much has been invested in the interior, they are in a nice location and in a beautiful building.

Absolutely incredible service, I was welcomed very warmly and everything I ate and drank here was amazing. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner! 10/10.

Amazing team running this coffee shop! Service is one of the best in the area. While it is a very touristy location, many of us that live around here frequent it for our daily coffee/breakfast. They have amazing food options and coffee. If the weather is nice you can also sit outside. They are very flexible and accommodating if you need to work a bit on your laptop and they are also dog friendly!
Adéla Krůčková★☆☆☆☆
They clearly have preferred customers, and if you’re not a local, they make it obvious. I’m not reviewing the food, but the service. Our first visit was good, which is why we came back. It was busy, so we chose to wait for a table. We asked the staff if we could reserve a table once one became available, but we were told no and that we had to wait until a table was free. So we waited outside the restaurant for about half an hour. When a table finally became available, we sat down. The same staff member then came over and told us the table was actually reserved. He had been holding it for two women who arrived after us and were seated inside. Another table was about to become free, so I went to move there. At the moment I was sitting down and my partner had gone to the restroom, a woman from a nearby table came over and took a chair from our table. The staff did nothing about it, said nothing to her, and only apologized to us, telling us to wait another 20 minutes until something else became available. So after waiting for more than half an hour and seeing two tables become free, we still didn’t get to eat. I would have appreciated a better approach from the staff. If you say that tables cannot be reserved, you shouldn’t then ask me to leave a table I’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, a big disappointment.
Happy Dust★★★★★
A charming little spot in Madrid that offers a sweet escape for weary travelers. The Pistachio Espresso is their signature menu, and it’s the perfect treat to recharge your energy. I’m truly sad that I didn't get to visit more than once during my stay.

We had some cakes and coffee in the late afternoon. The prices were OK. We didn’t have to wait for a table. The service was fine. I liked the way that we could sit near the window and watch the people walk by.

Great pastry shop, everything is delicious and has a really good price. Except the personnel is not so nice, they avoid interacting with you as much as possible even though you have to order directly with them and never say thanks or greets customers. Other than that would recommend this place without second guess.

Honestly, the best tiramisu I’ve ever had! Super fresh, smooth, and perfectly balanced – you can really tell it’s made on the spot, not your typical “standard” version. The cream is light and silky, and the coffee flavor is just right. It’s not too sweet or too heavy, just perfect. The kind of dessert you finish and immediately wish you had another one 😄 Highly recommended!

BEST PLACE IN MADRID TO BUY BREAD. Simply that. Plus empanadas, embutidos from León and Galicia, some selected cheeses, muffins, canned food. It really deserves a visit and buying an hogaza de trigo de 1 kg, you can buy it sliced then freeze it and you will have great bread with olive oil every morning. I recommend together with salt D'Estrenc.

Got the Tarta de Santiago, which was really good but also had an unexpected lemon-y flavor to it. It also wasn’t as dense as I thought it would be, and seemed to lack a strong almond flavor, but overall it was really good and would get again! Disclaimer: I added my own raspberries to this, it doesn’t not come with lol

I got a Calamari sandwich from another place but I knew that wasn't going to be as satisfying for me because I am not a huge calamari guy so I saw a place with pastries in their glass counters. This place was called Museo del Pan Gallego. Looking for a savory snack I saw they had the Spanish Empanadas. The one I ordered was the Tuna but they also had egg, meat and a couple other options. The only interesting thing was there was no lights on lol. I took my order to go and enjoyed it in front of the Royal Palace.

*An incredible pastry experience!* This shop serves some of the best pastries and croissants we've ever had. We couldn’t resist trying a few items right away— the pistachio croissant, cinnamon roll, and palmier. Both the croissant and palmier were absolutely amazing, with perfect texture and flavor. It looks cute. However, the experience was not good. The waiters seem stressed even though the place was half empty. I requested a table for one and I was ignored while they accommodated people that arrived after (they take no reservations and the whole lower floor was empty). The food was ok but forgettable. Very lame flat white, eggs and bacon were like in any ordinary cafeteria.

Made it before it got really busy. Food was out very quickly. The Andalusian breakfast with Iberian ham on whole wheat with grated tomato was incredibly delicious. The natural breakfast of yogurt with fruits and seeds was so tasty. Cappuccino was piled high with foamy milk. Loved it.

Great breakfast spot in Madrid! Excellent coffee, delicious pastries, and a cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend🥰

Very affordable price with good breakfast, simple and makes you full! It’s a hidden gem in the city center if you want to have some traditional breakfast without paying 20 euros
Maria Mendieta★☆☆☆☆
Maybe I came on a bad day, but the food was terrible. I ordered the Desayuno Americano and it was barely edible. The “bacon” was just heated up slices of ham, so salty it was inedible for me. The scrambled eggs were just ok. The toast was tough and over toasted. The coffee was burnt and again barely drinkable. The juice was fine. The bacon/ham was actually barely cooked at first and I had to send it back. (Attached picture is of the bacon AFTER they refried it, still looks terrible). No apology. Overall very disappointing. Do not recommend at all.

Tips for Choosing the Best Bakery Near Mercado de San Miguel

Even with a solid list of recommendations, a few simple strategies will help you get the most out of every bakery visit in central Madrid. Tourist-heavy areas can be overwhelming, and a little local knowledge goes a long way in avoiding disappointment.

Go early for the best selection. Most traditional Spanish bakeries bake in the early morning, and the finest pastries often sell out by noon. Arriving between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. gives you access to the freshest croissants, napolitanas, and bread still warm from the oven.

Look for bakeries with visible baking activity. If you can see trays going in and out of the oven or bakers working behind the counter, that is almost always a good sign. It means the products are made on-site rather than simply delivered frozen from an industrial supplier.

Prioritize short menus over endless displays. A bakery offering dozens of different pastries, cakes, and sandwiches may be spreading itself too thin. The best neighborhood spots often focus on a smaller number of items and execute them exceptionally well.

Ask for the house specialty. Every great bakery has one or two items it is known for, whether that is a particular type of empanada, a signature cake, or a unique sourdough loaf. Asking a staff member what they recommend often leads to the best bite of your day.

Check for local customers. If you see Madrileños stopping in for their morning coffee and toast, that is a strong signal of quality and fair pricing. A bakery filled mostly with tourists can still be good, but a steady local crowd is the most reliable endorsement.

Consider taking your purchases to go. Many of the best bakeries near Mercado de San Miguel have limited seating or none at all. Buying a few pastries and walking two minutes to Plaza Mayor or the Sabatini Gardens gives you a better atmosphere and often a lower price than sitting at a cramped tourist café.

Do not overlook the savory options. While sweets get most of the attention, Spanish bakeries often excel at empanadas, mini quiches, and savory palmiers. These make excellent quick lunches or snacks between tapas stops, and they are usually cheaper than eating inside the market itself.

The area around Mercado de San Miguel rewards curious eaters who are willing to look beyond the most obvious storefronts. A good bakery is not always the one with the longest line or the most Instagram-friendly window display. Often it is the quiet place where an elderly neighbor buys the same loaf of bread every morning.

Take your time, order a few different things, and do not be shy about asking questions. Bakers in Madrid are generally proud of their work and happy to explain what makes a particular pastry special. That small conversation can turn a simple purchase into a genuine memory of your time in the city.
