Finding a moment of quiet in the heart of Madrid can feel like a challenge, especially when you are navigating the vibrant crowds around the Plaza Mayor. The area surrounding the iconic Mercado de San Miguel is a sensory overload of tapas bars, street performers, and historic architecture. Yet, just a few steps away from the main tourist thoroughfares lies a thriving specialty coffee scene waiting to be discovered.
Whether you have just finished sampling olives inside the iron-and-glass market or you are starting your day before the crowds arrive, you likely need a proper caffeine fix. The neighborhood is a fascinating mix of traditional Spanish cafes where locals stand at the bar for a quick café con leche, and modern third-wave roasters pushing the boundaries of bean origin and brewing methods. Knowing where to go can save you from overpriced, underwhelming coffee.
This guide focuses on quality, atmosphere, and proximity to the Mercado. We have walked the cobblestone streets of the Austrias neighborhood to find spots that cater to both the hurried tourist and the remote worker looking for a comfortable seat. From minimalist Scandinavian-inspired interiors to cozy historic corners, the variety here is impressive.
You do not need to compromise on your coffee standards just because you are in a tourist-heavy zone. The rise of specialty coffee in Madrid has been significant, and thankfully, many of the best baristas have set up shop right on the doorstep of this famous landmark. We have curated a list that balances convenience with genuine quality.
Below, you will find a selection of cafes that excel in everything from espresso extraction to alternative milk options and freshly baked pastries. Each location offers something unique, whether it is a quiet back patio, a selection of natural wines, or simply the fastest service in the district. These are the places where you can recharge before your next adventure.
Consider this your insider map to the caffeine landscape of Old Madrid. We have prioritized spots that treat coffee as a craft rather than an afterthought. You will find details on the vibe, the distance from the market, and what to order when you arrive.
Here are the best places to get your caffeine fix within walking distance of the Mercado de San Miguel.

Your friendly coffee shop around the corner 🙂 The space is so limited so you need to early to get seat, coffee's and service is excellent. I went there 3 times (basically 3 nights in madrid) in a row and i felt like home. If you can able to pay cash you can get %6 discount on top of the bill or you can pay with your credit card. I mostly paid around 10-12 euro-ish depending my order. 1 americano coffee (with great cream) + meal. You can also order fresh cakes, croissants too. People who working in the coffee is so nice and talkative and good ambient music all day.

Lovely spot to stop for a latte and tomato toast. Very friendly atmosphere and they were kind when my spanish wasn’t great, haha. Around 9:30am on a Thursday I was able to sit and people-watch! Thank you. We came back twice!!
Pretty small place so I recommend takeaway unless you are a party of 4 or less
Helena Fombella★★★★★
Top-tier spot in the neighborhood for a quick grab-and-go 🍵
Stopped by for a takeaway coco matcha and the execution was spot on: brilliant green hue, velvety microfoam with crisp latte art, and that balanced, clean sweetness without any gritty texture at the bottom.
The space itself is cozy and well-equipped (solid La Marzocco setup on the counter, great selection of single-origin beans, and freshly baked pastries lined up) 🥐
Fast service, precise temperature, and zero fluff. Definitely a reliable daily stop if you care about beverage quality. 🍃

The staff were friendly, and the dishes served were very tasty. If you like good bread and coffee, this place is definitely worth checking out.
I enjoyed the tomato awokado toast most!

I found this amazing dessert spot in Spain and had to share!
The soufflé was absolutely incredible — served warm, perfectly fluffy, and so light it almost melts in your mouth. It had just the right level of sweetness, not too heavy, and the texture was beautifully delicate.
The matcha latte was just as impressive. The matcha flavor was rich and fragrant without being bitter, and the balance with the milk was spot on. Smooth, comforting, and really well made.
Overall, the quality of the food really stood out. It’s a great place to sit down, relax, and enjoy something special. Definitely a place I would come back to!
Plamen Apostolov★★★★★
Amazing souffle amd coffee. Fantastic service! The souffle is ready for curca 10 minutes. You can sit outside or inside. The souffle I tried was the classic one, but you can order it with additional extras. Definitely I will comr back!
Edit: I came back on the next day and tried the Pistachio souffle - it was even better. Many thanks!
June Le★★★★★
This place has by far the best coffee in Madrid (we had latte and espresso), very fragrant flavor and potent texture. And they have soufflé and it is excellent !! What a surprise to find soufflé at a café in Madrid. It is delicious ❤️🇪🇸🥰
Almira Garifullina★★★★★
I came here already expecting the soufflé to be amazing, because the first time we tried to visit it was so busy we couldn’t even get a table. So I was really curious if it was actually worth it — and it 100% was.🥰
The soufflé is honestly insane — super light, soft, and just melts instantly. I’m not even exaggerating, it might be the best dessert I’ve ever had.
The coffee is also really good — rich, smooth, and just super enjoyable. I also liked that they have options for people who don’t drink caffeine, which makes the place feel even more thoughtful.✨

I've had souffles all over the world, from Le Souffle in Paris and souffle pancakes in Japan - I can confidently say I had the best sweet souffle at Casa Minut. It is absolutely criminal that this isn't more well known.
Our host, server, cashier, chef and barista (all one man) was fantastic. Walked us through the menu, our options and provided great suggestions.
10/10 am recommending.

Homely atmosphere and solid coffee. It seems to me that not much has been invested in the interior, they are in a nice location and in a beautiful building.

Absolutely incredible service, I was welcomed very warmly and everything I ate and drank here was amazing. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner! 10/10.

Amazing team running this coffee shop! Service is one of the best in the area. While it is a very touristy location, many of us that live around here frequent it for our daily coffee/breakfast.
They have amazing food options and coffee. If the weather is nice you can also sit outside.
They are very flexible and accommodating if you need to work a bit on your laptop and they are also dog friendly!
Adéla Krůčková★☆☆☆☆
They clearly have preferred customers, and if you’re not a local, they make it obvious.
I’m not reviewing the food, but the service. Our first visit was good, which is why we came back.
It was busy, so we chose to wait for a table. We asked the staff if we could reserve a table once one became available, but we were told no and that we had to wait until a table was free. So we waited outside the restaurant for about half an hour. When a table finally became available, we sat down.
The same staff member then came over and told us the table was actually reserved. He had been holding it for two women who arrived after us and were seated inside. Another table was about to become free, so I went to move there. At the moment I was sitting down and my partner had gone to the restroom, a woman from a nearby table came over and took a chair from our table. The staff did nothing about it, said nothing to her, and only apologized to us, telling us to wait another 20 minutes until something else became available.
So after waiting for more than half an hour and seeing two tables become free, we still didn’t get to eat. I would have appreciated a better approach from the staff. If you say that tables cannot be reserved, you shouldn’t then ask me to leave a table I’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, a big disappointment.

A charming little spot in Madrid that offers a sweet escape for weary travelers. The Pistachio Espresso is their signature menu, and it’s the perfect treat to recharge your energy. I’m truly sad that I didn't get to visit more than once during my stay.

My favourite Cold Brew in Madrid, just the absolute best. Also one of my favourite coffee places in Madrid. If you are looking for a perfect cup every time, head here. My only hesitation is that sometimes the staff seem a bit unfriendly.

Cute little café with a bakery next to it. It was cozy to sit outside on a sunny day, enjoy good coffee, and just relax. The service was good and fast, especially considering there was only one person working.

Delicious cappuccino!! The cappuccino comes in S, M, or L which I found strange but I got a M and it seemed to be a typical cappuccino size. Beans perfectly roasted, very sweet, the milk foam was also perfect. The barista spoke English and was friendly. Provided the WiFi password which I appreciated.
Not much seating but the interior is very cute and with good chill music, it has great vibes if you can get a spot! I bought two bags of coffee to go, the beans were that good. Wish I were staying in Madrid longer so I could come back!

The iced latte here was excellent and remarkably good, can highly recommend going here for great coffee. The space for seating is very limited but still worth a visit.

We’re visiting from the US and this was a recommendation from a local. Coffee is delicious. We got the chicken sandwich to split and it was a perfect portion to hold us over for lunchtime. You have to order at the register/counter everyone is super friendly. They have an English menu which is helpful. After you order at the register/counter, you can sit anywhere and they bring the food over to you. Would highly recommend checking it out. Great vibe in here.

Tastiest cortado I’ve had in my life. Great balance. I could actually taste the brightness and acidity of the espresso. Friendly staff. Cool space to hang out in. Prices are a little high but totally worth it if you’re looking for a premium coffee experience.

Our first breakfast in Madrid and it was a good choice. Both the bagel and the bread with egg were fresh and tasty. The portions aren't the biggest, but they're fine. The barista knows his coffee, was friendly and will definitely recommend good beans to anyone. Filter coffee is made using an xbloom machine, which is an interesting fact. They also have really good tea. It’s a popular place, but it’s a good one.
Oleg Shestakov★★★★★
Great place to stop for a specialty coffee near the palace. I really enjoyed the Geisha hand brew. It’s on the pricier side at around 9€, but the beans are worth it. It was ripe and full of juicy flavor. I loved it. I was too slow to take a picture of the flat white, but it was made to a high standard with great milk temperature and texture. I definitely recommend this place for coffee enthusiasts!

The worse coffee I had in Madrid, had a late with oat milk, barely a faint taste of coffee, milky color and just literally oat milk. . Iced version was better. Can’t explain the reviews . Had also a cookie which was fine . Only take away option.
Mel Z★★★★★
I love visiting local coffee shops and I am glad I stopped by!
Not only did the barista create a great oatmilk latte, but she was nice, friendly and happy to explain any other coffee drinks.
The girl by the stand was not as nice or attentive, but the barista made it worthwhile! Thanks for making a great latte for a long day!
Taoufik Mirkhan★☆☆☆☆
The cappuccino was disappointing. The steamed milk seemed to be poured straight into the cup without proper barista technique, resulting in an unbalanced texture, either overly foamy or too watery, rather than the smooth, creamy consistency expected from a cappuccino.

Cute chain coffee shop, can find other locations in the city and in Barcelona. Nice that they are opened a bit later than other coffee shops in the area. Very god cold brew.

Very warm and cozy inside, with a strong coffee vibe.
I really liked the gramophone inside — it adds a lot of character.
Both cheesecakes, the pistachio and the classic one, were terrific: very soft, almost melting inside. The matcha cake was also soft and tasty, and I’m glad I gave it a try.

A Hidden Gem for Specialty Coffee in Madrid ☕✨
On our last day in Madrid, we had zero plans and I really wanted good coffee, so I found this place on Google. It’s right in the center, but tucked away on a quiet uphill street, which made it so nice and peaceful.
From the outside, it’s beautiful with warm yellow lights. Inside, it’s instantly cozy with a rustic wooden feel and quirky green and white tiles. It felt so incredibly homely, I wish I took more pictures, but I was enjoying my latte and food!
The Food & Coffee 🥑
Everything was served on the most beautiful plates. We got:
Avocado Toast: The avocado was so creamy with a generous drizzle of olive oil. That freshness and rich oil cut through the sourdough perfectly. The bread was really good.
Artichoke & sundried tomato toast: The artichoke spread was perfect and a little garlicky (which I love!). It was topped with sundried tomatoes, and that slight sourness cut through the creamy garlic flavour perfectly.
The cakes looked so tempting, but since I'm a vegetarian and don't eat eggs, I had to skip them.
For drinks, we both got the Almond Latte (mine with almond milk, his with regular). It was honestly perfect, so smooth, not too sweet since I got mine sugarless, and it had the best texture. Mine was even topped with a pretty pattern and little flowers!
Service was a little slow, but only because one person was running the entire cafe. It wasn’t too busy, just about three tables occupied. It’s super family-friendly, and I’m guessing pet-friendly too (especially with that cute dog logo on the window!). Such a warm, wonderful experience.
Vibhore Singh★★★★★
Had a lovely experience at El Perro de Pavlov Café. The people working there were incredibly humble, kind, and welcoming, which made us feel right at home. The service was a little slow, but honestly, we weren't in any rush and it was clear that only one or two people were running the place and doing their absolute best. Considering that, we really appreciated the effort and care they put into serving everyone.
The coffee and food were great, and the atmosphere was relaxed and cozy. It's the kind of place where you can slow down, enjoy your time, and feel genuinely looked after. We'll definitely be back.
Ceylin Doğan★★★★★
I had the garlic-rubbed tomato toast and orange juice and they were amazing! The toast has only garlic and tomato(if you want you can add cheese and ham), its simple but how can this be so delicious?? Also service was great, she was friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend!

Tiny cafe. There was no one else in when I was there. I bought 2 x cookies which was super delicious but at them later with coffee. Staff were lovely. On April 11th, I visited Terracota Green Café in Madrid. I had their specialty coffee and a variety of desserts. The barista seemed highly trained, as the latte art was professional, and the coffee itself was perfectly balanced—not bitter like in most coffee shops. It was a wonderful experience, and I'm already craving that specialty coffee and cake again.

Tips for Enjoying Coffee Near Mercado de San Miguel
The coffee culture in Madrid operates on a slightly different rhythm than what you might be used to, and understanding the local etiquette can greatly enhance your experience. Whether you are a coffee connoisseur or just need a quick energy boost, a little preparation goes a long way in this bustling part of the city.
Know the Local Lingo
While many specialty shops in Madrid use English terms like "flat white" or "cold brew," traditional spots still operate on Spanish sizes. If you want a small, strong coffee, order a café solo. For a standard coffee with milk, ask for a café con leche. If you prefer a smaller ratio of coffee to milk, similar to a cortado, request a cortado. Knowing these terms helps you order faster and blend in with the locals.
Check the Seating Situation Before You Order
Space is at a premium in the historic center. Many of the best coffee spots are standing-room only or have very limited seating. If you are looking to sit with a laptop for two hours, look for cafes that explicitly advertise a workspace or have a second floor. Otherwise, be prepared to drink your coffee at the bar or take it to go as you stroll.
Be Mindful of Peak Hours
The area around the Mercado gets incredibly busy between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, as well as in the early evening. If you want a relaxed experience and a chance to chat with the barista, visit right when they open or during the late morning lull. You will often get a better brew when the staff isn’t rushed by a massive queue of tourists.
Carry Cash or a Card with Tap
While most modern coffee shops in Madrid accept contactless payments and cards, some smaller, traditional bars have a minimum spend for card transactions. Carrying a €5 or €10 note is wise, especially if you are just grabbing a single espresso. This ensures you aren’t caught off guard when it is time to pay.
Embrace the Roastery Culture
Madrid has seen a boom in local roasters, and many cafes now exclusively serve beans from local Spanish companies. If you enjoy the coffee, ask the barista about the origin and roast profile. Purchasing a bag of beans to take home is not only a great souvenir but also supports the local economy that keeps this vibrant scene alive.
Look for the "Tostado" Date
If you are buying beans to take home, check the bag for a roasting date, often listed as fecha de tueste. You want beans that have been roasted within the last two to four weeks. Avoid bags that only list an expiration date, as this often hides older, stale coffee.
Stepping away from the hustle of the market to enjoy a quality cup of coffee is one of the best ways to experience Madrid like a local. The contrast between the historic, crowded plazas and the quiet, aromatic interiors of these cafes offers a much-needed balance to your sightseeing itinerary.
Whether you choose a modern specialty bar or a historic institution, taking the time to slow down and savor your drink will make your visit more memorable. The neighborhood’s coffee scene is constantly evolving, so don’t be afraid to wander down a side street and discover a new favorite spot that isn’t on any map yet.
