12 Best Cafes Near Mercado de San Miguel

Tucked just behind the western edge of Plaza Mayor, Mercado de San Miguel is Madrid’s most famous gourmet market, drawing a constant flow of visitors eager to sample tapas, oysters, and regional wines. Yet once you have navigated the bustling glass-and-iron stalls, you often need a quiet place to sit down, rest your feet, and enjoy a proper coffee. The streets surrounding the market—particularly Cava de San Miguel, Calle Mayor, and Cava Baja—are filled with historic cafés that offer a welcome respite from the tourist crowds.

Finding a genuinely good café in such a heavily trafficked area can be tricky, as many spots prioritize speed over quality. However, if you know where to look, you can discover everything from traditional Spanish breakfast counters to modern specialty coffee roasters just a few minutes’ walk from the market. Whether you want a quick espresso at the bar or a leisurely café con leche with a slice of cake, the area offers a surprising depth of options.

The key is to step slightly off the most direct tourist paths. While the immediate perimeter of the market is lined with terraces, the best experiences often lie down the narrow side streets or inside historic pastry shops that have served Madrileños for over a century. These locations offer not just a caffeine fix but a genuine slice of Madrid’s social culture.

This guide focuses on cafés that excel in atmosphere, coffee quality, and proximity to Mercado de San Miguel. We have considered factors like bean sourcing, interior comfort, and whether the establishment provides a true local experience rather than a generic tourist stop. You will find options ranging from iconic chocolate spots to minimalist third-wave coffee bars.

Because the area is compact, every recommendation here is within a ten-minute walk of the market. This means you can easily plan a coffee crawl or pop in for a quick break between sightseeing stops. Remember that local customs differ—many Spaniards drink their coffee standing at the bar for a lower price, while sitting at a table often incurs a small surcharge.

Below, you will find a curated list of the best places to grab a coffee, paired with practical advice on how to order like a local and avoid the busiest times. Whether you are a coffee connoisseur or simply need a comfortable chair, these spots provide the perfect complement to your market visit.

Homely atmosphere and solid coffee. It seems to me that not much has been invested in the interior, they are in a nice location and in a beautiful building.

Absolutely incredible service, I was welcomed very warmly and everything I ate and drank here was amazing. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner! 10/10.

Amazing team running this coffee shop! Service is one of the best in the area. While it is a very touristy location, many of us that live around here frequent it for our daily coffee/breakfast. They have amazing food options and coffee. If the weather is nice you can also sit outside. They are very flexible and accommodating if you need to work a bit on your laptop and they are also dog friendly!

They clearly have preferred customers, and if you’re not a local, they make it obvious. I’m not reviewing the food, but the service. Our first visit was good, which is why we came back. It was busy, so we chose to wait for a table. We asked the staff if we could reserve a table once one became available, but we were told no and that we had to wait until a table was free. So we waited outside the restaurant for about half an hour. When a table finally became available, we sat down. The same staff member then came over and told us the table was actually reserved. He had been holding it for two women who arrived after us and were seated inside. Another table was about to become free, so I went to move there. At the moment I was sitting down and my partner had gone to the restroom, a woman from a nearby table came over and took a chair from our table. The staff did nothing about it, said nothing to her, and only apologized to us, telling us to wait another 20 minutes until something else became available. So after waiting for more than half an hour and seeing two tables become free, we still didn’t get to eat. I would have appreciated a better approach from the staff. If you say that tables cannot be reserved, you shouldn’t then ask me to leave a table I’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, a big disappointment.

A charming little spot in Madrid that offers a sweet escape for weary travelers. The Pistachio Espresso is their signature menu, and it’s the perfect treat to recharge your energy. I’m truly sad that I didn't get to visit more than once during my stay.

This place is amazing! I cannot say enough good things about their service. The honey cake (Medovnik) is absolutely delicious, and don’t even get me started on their delicious ginger mojito… WOW! Nany and Cary certainly added to the greatness of my trip to Madrid. A must-visit when in Madrid! Highly recommend!

Everything delicious!! Especially the juices and the acai! All natural and fresh. Highly recommended, also staff super friendly 🙏❤️

If I could give them 10 stars, I would. Their staff is so patient and friendly. We being vegetarians generally have limited choices and on top of that, it’s hard to find good food in a place where meat eaters have more options. Their staff took such good care of us, explained the options well and served us the most delicious avocado sandwich ever. Their cappuccino was equally amazing. Although they didn’t have chips on their menu but when I asked, they gave us complimentary chips and refused to charge for it. In a place and location that’s full of tourists and patience generally runs thin, this place offered great food and customer service when they could easily go the other way!

Lovely coffee shop in the heart of Madrid de las Austrias District. This clean, quaint cafe has a decent selection of fresh cakes and serves them in generous portions. It's reasonably priced and the service is professional, friendly and always with a smile. I highly recommend the lemon meringue pie.

Worst customer behaviour seen at any tourist place. Asked gently to try an icecream before buying. The rude lady clearly said no and then said may be pay before you can try. As if I will run away after trying and not buy anything from the store. Icecream flavours look attractive but found way better taste elsewhere.

It was almost the end of the day at 1030pm. There were not much left. We got almond croissants and cheese&ham croissants which were on sale for end of the day. Because they looked so good we wanted to get them for breakfast next day. We also got Churros and Horchata. Churros were excellent, crunchy and soft, perfect texture. We didn’t want the chocolate dip to go with it, just plain. It was yummy all by itself. By the time we got home, we ate the almond croissants, they were so delicious with lots of almond fillings, creamy and almondy, and lots of flakes on top to make it all worth it. We really enjoyed the pastries and would love to visit an actual store at an earlier hour for more variety. Staff were friendly and quick.

Chocolate gelato was smooth and creamy. The vanilla on the other hand had freezer burn and ice crystals. We had to toss it in the garbage. We told the employees and they listened.

We tried cookie (nothing special) and a cheesecake cookie dessert which was phenomenal. We tried all three flavors (praline, pistachio, gianduja) and they were all delicious. The place is quite crowded but the service is quick.

The service is incredible ! They gave us free churros and were so sweet. Update: I just tried my hot chocolate and it was to die for. And I am not exaggerating. My friend and I were in shock. We have never experienced anything like it before. You can’t make this kind of stuff up.

We went there as a couple only looking for some great cocktails (one of their strongest points) and sweets. Ainoha who served us was very accommodating and willing to go above and beyond. 5 stars for her. What we did not appreciate - hence my low rating: - we had to wait at least 20 minutes. For good restaurants that’s understandable. However there were 4 seats available upstairs (two at the bar, two at a free table). 5 people waiting before us, none of them seated - nor us - at these free seats. When we finally got seated downstairs there were two other free tables with 4 more free seats. - the cocktail guy (or girl 🤍) was free today. So they had no cocktails. Unacceptable for such a busy place in the middle of Madrid - we had two of the menu’s stars: the pistachio pancakes and the cinnamon rolls. The pancakes were a disappointment for me - three pancakes, good looking, with a bit of pistachio frosting and icecream on top. But tasteless otherwise. I would not recommend. I appreciated the roll - very sweet for my husband yet ok for me. - very difficult to drink coffee out of the very nice looking cups I would definitely not recommend nor come again.

This breakfast spot was absolutely incredible!! We just needed a place that opened early before we left for the airport, and we were very happy for an 8am opening. My daughter had the burger (yes, for breakfast, and she wasn’t the only one!) and I had the French toast. I didn’t get to taste the burger because it was completely gone before I had a chance to ask for a bite. But the French toast, besides the beautiful display, came with a little scoop of ice cream that nicely replaced the need for syrup, plus fresh strawberries and blueberries and a caramelized banana. The details were so nicely done. Even my cappuccino was so beautifully crafted! I cannot recommend this place enough. Every food item that came out to other tables looks delicious and I’m sending my other daughter here when she studies in Madrid next semester!
Juan Campo★★★★☆
It’s a popular tourist spot, so it’s usually bustling with visitors, partly because of its reputation and the hype surrounding it. The atmosphere is lively, but it definitely feels quite touristy. The food is decent overall, although the menu leans heavily toward desserts. One thing I didn’t particularly like is their practice of encouraging customers to leave a five-star review at the end of the meal. When it seems to be a standard part of the experience, it takes away some of the authenticity and usefulness of the reviews when deciding whether to visit. The approach to tipping also felt a bit excessive. Overall, the food is decent, but considering the crowds and potential wait, I’m not sure the experience is worth the hype.

Brunch here ! Such a good spot. Amazing food, service, and I loved the vibes/ decor. The salmon Benedict was super fresh, and the potato waffle with truffle mushroom is a must if you love mushrooms. The Pistachio Obsession café was creamy, aesthetic, and honestly so good. Alejandro gave great service, friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Would definitely go back.
The Foodie Crusader★★★★★
This place had a bit of a wait, but i think it was worth it. Its very nice and cozy inside. The staff is nice and friendly. The food was excellent. The latte was delicious. The Spanish omelet was super yummy. It basically reminds me of potatoes au gratin wrapped with a thin sheet of egg. I got mine with pork belly and it was delicious and filling for me. We ordered the French toast by mistake but it worked out for us. It was absolutely delicious. The toast was soft, sweet, and flavorful, the ice cream and fresh berries made it all come together nicely. The prices are reasonable. I would definitely come back, and i would make this a must visit.

We had a great time here! It was a super hot day and they accommodated us inside with AC. The watermelon slushees were refreshing. The chicken platter and Paella seafood rice bowl was pretty good. They were quick getting our food out too

This is a lovely place to sit and take a breather. I enjoyed the gambas al ajillo and the mixed tuna salad. The shrimp were perfect!!
Mehri Moghadam★★★☆☆
We ordered two dishes: the fish and the steak. The steak was acceptable and cooked reasonably well, but the fish was disappointing — it did not seem fresh, had an unpleasant smell, and lacked proper flavor and quality, making it hard to enjoy. No sauce was included, and when we asked, a small packet was charged €1. Drinks were also overpriced compared to market prices. Overall, the experience was mixed, and the food quality did not justify the price.

I should have looked at the reviews before coming, but the restaurant had a decent amount of people and gave it a chance. The staff is straight up rude and have no skills in customer service. This was my first time to this style of restaurant and I was reviewing the menu. I didn't have time to look over the menu because the waiters kept bothering about what I want to eat. If they had given me time to order I would have ordered. But within 10 minutes, I had been asked 6 times what I wanted to eat and that passed me off.
Tommy Plugor★★★★★
We stopped here after walking around the Royal Palace and Cathedral and had a great lunch. The staff was super friendly and funny and we loved the gambas! I personally found that even though many places make good gambas not all of them use a good oil/sauce that you can dip your bread into, fortunately this place was not one of them and our bread was gone in no time! So delicious, ah!

The coffee was really delicious, and the prices are so good compared to other places in the city centre. The barista are super friendly and they have amazing deals if you want to get a little sandwich and a coffee. It’s really perfect if you’re looking for a nice place to start your morning!

So glad I stumbled on this little cafe! It's tucked away in a cool, quiet corner just away from the plaza-- perfect if you're feeling a little overstimulated from the crowds of tourists, or just want to get out of the sun for a few minutes. The owner was very kind, and the coffee was delicious and super fairly priced (half the price of a bigger cafe down the road!); it's recommended to pay by card unless you have exact change. I'll definitely be returning if I find myself in the neighborhood again!

Perfect location, not as expensive as some other restaurants in the square. Friendly service, very pleasant to sit down on a sunny day. The one thing that surprised me, is that the shrimp in my paella seemed to have the black line under the skin (meaning the hadn’t been cleaned inside).
Antoni Jozefkowicz★☆☆☆☆
This place did not live up to its rating. The food was below anything that we ate in Madrid. The calamari with pesto was super oily with almost no taste and some pieces had the consistency of rubber and with each bite I was wondering if I wasn’t chewing on a bottle cap by accident. The server was more interested in talking with friends than attending to us, said friends were drunkenly clearing the tables around us and causing a ruckus. Total waste of time and money do not recommend!

Karla, our server was so attentive and nice! The food had very good seasoning. We tried breaded shrimp, meatballs and potatoes, steak, olives and anchovies. Amazing drinks, Karla was always very attentive and friendly. Next trip to Spain we are definitely coming back. Thank you

The location is superb! Right on the Plaza! The food was good! But the service was excellent. Fernando provided excellent attention to detail. Was polite, and very patient and supportive of me practicing my (very) poor Spanish. I would highly recommend a visit and ask for Fernando.

This was a fun experience. I know that this market is a bit touristy for sure, but the food selection was better than other bar locations we were at. We loved our meat, olives and cheeses from here. I also loved my Vermouth here, the first place I enjoyed this in Spain!

Great selection of vermuts. The place is crowded with locals and tourists so might be hard to find your way to the bar/service. But I enjoyed the vermuts very much.

This is a great place in Mercado St Miguel! Tried it very late at night so it was quiet, super worth it. The staff were very helpful and knowledgable. Tried 2 different vermouth and got a side of olives (the smaller tray in the photo was complimentary). Definitely worth a try (aim for a less busy hour so you enjoy the atmosphere), will be going back!

I ordered the roasted vegetable empanada and the provolone and tomato (tasted like a pizza and super cheesy) empanada. Both were good. The guy toasted it before giving them to me. Would recommend trying! The market is very crowded and no place to sit but as a tourist it’s still worth checking out.

Cozy and aesthetically pleasing place. There’s no Wi-Fi or phone service, which can be inconvenient but it also encourages you to disconnect and actually connect with the people around you. The cheesecake was delicious, but the red velvet cake was the standout. we loved it so much that we ordered another one.

Lovely cafe. Very beautifully decorated. I ate a toast that was amazing. 10/10 Great vibes, calm and comfortable.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t satisfied with my experience here. When we arrived, the upstairs area was full, so they suggested we sit downstairs. We agreed, but the downstairs area had a very strong artificial air freshener smell, probably because of humidity or something nearby. The smell was overwhelming and honestly uncomfortable to breathe. The lighting downstairs was also extremely dim and unpleasant. Most of the chairs and sofas didn’t feel very stable or comfortable either. I actually had to change my chair because it felt loose and unsafe. The coffee arrived spilled into the saucer, and the sugar packet next to it was wet and unusable. The staff also didn’t really speak English, which made communication a bit difficult. On top of that, the cake I ordered arrived much later than the coffee, so by the time it came, my drink was already almost cold. That said, the cake itself and the nachos we ordered tasted good. But unfortunately, the coffee was not memorable at all, and overall the experience was disappointing.

The worse coffee I had in Madrid, had a late with oat milk, barely a faint taste of coffee, milky color and just literally oat milk. . Iced version was better. Can’t explain the reviews . Had also a cookie which was fine . Only take away option.

I love visiting local coffee shops and I am glad I stopped by! Not only did the barista create a great oatmilk latte, but she was nice, friendly and happy to explain any other coffee drinks. The girl by the stand was not as nice or attentive, but the barista made it worthwhile! Thanks for making a great latte for a long day!

The cappuccino was disappointing. The steamed milk seemed to be poured straight into the cup without proper barista technique, resulting in an unbalanced texture, either overly foamy or too watery, rather than the smooth, creamy consistency expected from a cappuccino.

I rarely write reviews but during my three day stay in madrid i had to go there twice because of how sweet they were. Immediately upon sitting down, they offer you a free cup of cold water which is nice because of the heat wave going on. On one of the days I had a ginger and lemon juice which was super refreshing but on my second visit I decided to try the "Bonbon frio" which was very strong and delicious in flavour. The servers were so nice and seemed to really care about their regulars. The ambience and decor are pretty relaxing and a good spot if you wanna go study/work during the week.

There are not enough stars in the sky to accurately rate this cafe. The atmosphere is quaint and comfortable, the staff feels and treats you like family, and the coffee is the best I've ever had. We were in Madrid for 2 and 1/2 days and gladly filled their loyalty punch card. The Cafelito, both iced and frozen, is a must try for its unique, fresh/rich complexity. I will miss this place and their friendly staff ❤️

One of the best chain brunch spots (especially for tourists). Enjoyed having breakfast here twice, but this location was the best by far. The atmosphere and decor made everything so lovely and quaint. The food was the star of the show - very filling portions, a great selection, and very tasty. Highly recommend the Shaksuka or any of the eggs benedict. The drink menu was equally good.

I ordered the 'Vital' from the breakfast menu, eggs, cheese, and avocado on toast. It was delicious and perfectly balanced. The meal includes tea or coffee, and the Americano coffee was great too. The place is known as breakfast restaurant, but they are serving multiple sweet dishes with cakes variety. You can get the coffee, milk or tea as complimentary along with each breakfast dish. Better to go early as most of the time there will be waiting line of 20 to 30 minutes, However the reservation is not nessesary as they do not take it in consideration.

Tips for Enjoying Cafés Near Mercado de San Miguel

Navigating the café scene around a major tourist hub requires a bit of local knowledge. The following tips will help you save money, avoid long waits, and drink coffee the way Madrileños do. Understanding these small nuances can significantly improve your overall experience.

Order at the bar to save money. In Spain, there is often a price difference between standing at the bar (barra) and sitting at a table (mesa). If you just need a quick caffeine fix, order and drink at the counter like a local.

Know your coffee terminology. A "café solo" is an espresso, "cortado" is espresso with a splash of milk, and "café con leche" is half coffee and half hot milk. If you want a larger, weaker coffee similar to an Americano, ask for a "café americano."

Avoid peak breakfast hours. Locals typically stop for coffee around 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. If you want a quieter experience or a table without waiting, visit before 9:30 AM or during the late afternoon lull between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

Look for "tostada con tomate." If you are hungry, the classic Spanish breakfast is a toasted baguette rubbed with fresh tomato, drizzled with olive oil, and served with coffee. Most traditional cafés near the market serve this, and it is usually fresher than pre-made pastries.

Bring cash for smaller spots. While most modern cafés accept cards, some traditional family-run bars and historic pastry shops near the market have minimum purchase requirements for credit cards or operate on a cash-only basis.

Check if the terrace has a surcharge. Many cafés with outdoor seating facing the market or Plaza Mayor charge a premium for the view. If you are on a budget, enjoy your coffee inside at the bar where the price is often significantly lower.

Don’t be afraid to ask for the house specialty. Many historic cafés in this area are known for a specific item, such as churros, napolitanas, or a unique house blend. Asking the barista "¿Cuál es la especialidad de la casa?" often leads to a memorable order you wouldn’t have found on your own.

The area surrounding Mercado de San Miguel is steeped in history, and taking the time to sit in one of these cafés allows you to absorb the rhythm of the old city. While the market itself is a sensory overload of flavors, the surrounding coffee shops offer a chance to decompress and watch the world go by.

Ultimately, the best café for you depends on your mood. If you need speed and excellent espresso, a specialty bar is your best bet. If you want history and atmosphere, look for a classic institution that has been serving the neighborhood for decades. Either way, you are never more than a few steps away from a satisfying cup in this vibrant corner of Madrid.
