Finding a reliable pharmacy is essential whether you live in Ciutadella de Menorca year-round or are visiting this beautiful western corner of the island. While a vacation often focuses on beaches and relaxation, unexpected health needs, sunburns, or minor ailments can still arise. Having a clear understanding of where the local farmacias are located can save you valuable time and reduce stress during an emergency.
Ciutadella is the historic former capital of Menorca, characterized by its winding medieval streets, bustling port, and vibrant local life. Unlike larger mainland cities, pharmacy hours here follow a strict regulatory schedule that includes late-night and weekend duty rotations. Navigating this system is easier when you know which establishments are centrally located and which ones serve the outlying residential areas.
The Spanish pharmacy system is highly regulated, ensuring that you receive professional advice and authentic medication. Pharmacists in Spain are trained to offer consultations for minor symptoms, often saving you a trip to the doctor. In Ciutadella, many pharmacists speak a mix of Catalan, Spanish, and often some English, particularly in areas frequented by tourists.
It is important to note that while basic painkillers and sunscreens are easily accessible, prescription refills from other countries may require a local doctor’s visit. However, the pharmacies listed below are equipped to guide you through the process or direct you to the nearest medical center. They serve as the first line of defense for healthcare in the community.
When searching for a pharmacy, you will notice a distinct green cross sign, often illuminated when open. The local government mandates that at least one pharmacy remains open 24 hours a day on a rotating basis. The schedule for these "Farmacias de Guardia" is usually posted on the door of every closed pharmacy.
For tourists staying in the old town or near the port of Ciutadella, proximity is key, as the historic center is largely pedestrianized. For residents in neighborhoods like Sa Quintana or Son Oleo, having a car might be necessary to reach the nearest open location. The following list encompasses the primary options available across the municipality.
Whether you need a specific medication, baby formula, or high-quality dermatological products, these establishments offer a high standard of care. They also serve as a valuable resource for local health advice, such as dealing with jellyfish stings or heat exhaustion during the hot Menorcan summers.

My 6 month old son had a fever & after being at the hospital they gave us a prescription to take here. I was also advised by the Dr to give him calpol so when my partner picked up the prescription & then asked for calpol they refused as he is only 6 months old. Even the Dr told me to give it to him & the Dr had given him some prior.
It is now Saturday night, where we are staying now pharmacies are open & we weren't even given an alternative so now my poor baby is going to need something & we do not have anything. Back to the hospital tomorrow.
***After seeing the response I must reply. I am not a liar & I know what the Spanish doctor at Juaneda private hospital told me to give my child. In fact 2 Drs from the same practice advised us to give our child Calpol every 6 hours. It was at 8pm on 19/10/24 that we went to pharmacy.
A male in your pharmacy refused to give us Calpol or a similar name etc even though we said the doctor told us to pick some up. It wasn't on the prescription which I previously mentioned, antibiotics were on the prescription.
Very disconcerting that they are making me sound like a liar instead. I would advise anyone with a sick child not to use this pharmacy Incase of negligence and then they would most likely lie to cover it up***

Thank you for the warm welcome and for taking the time to listen. I went to this pharmacy, which was the one on duty because it was Sunday. The person there took the time to explain and guide me through taking the medication for my daughter's ear infection. Thank you for the invaluable help provided to a mother and her sick daughter on a Sunday while traveling abroad! It was very comforting.

Lady working there was rude and tried to upsell me a product that wasn’t in the strength I was looking for. She tried to convince me that 10% strength was “the same thing” as 15%. not sure if I’d trust a pharmacist who says that…

HORROR!!!
What a horrible experience!!! I was served by a rather elderly woman, I assume the owner, who was very arrogant even though I hadn't done anything to her… I suppose she was having a bad day, although I had already heard she was quite unpleasant… thank goodness I'm a respectful woman and didn't stoop to her level. I dress from the feet up! I will never return.

For work, I moved to Ciutadella. While working on a construction site two buildings next to this pharmacy, I had an accident and suffered a significant cut on my arm (11 stitches). Seeing that there was a pharmacy nearby and without any other resources, I went to the pharmacy at 2 PM, but it was closed (understandable, as each business has its own hours). Looking through the window, I saw staff inside, so I rang the bell. A person in a pharmacy uniform answered and told me they were having lunch. I told them, "Look, I'm bleeding profusely. Could you sell me some gauze, even just a little, since I'm wearing my work shirt and it could get infected?" They told me to go to another pharmacy on duty. I told them I wasn't from here and didn't know the town. They told me to look it up online while the blood kept flowing. I asked, "And you wouldn't happen to have any paper towels or napkins, please?" They replied no. A kind man saw me on the street and took me to the town hospital. They treated me and gave me 11 stitches. Later, I went back to work to get my things and went into the pharmacy to buy what they had told me to get at the hospital. I told a girl what had happened, and she said she couldn't do anything. When I said I was going to leave a review, everything changed. I told the owner, and she came out to ask me for an explanation. I told her I just wanted to express my frustration with the lack of humanity, especially since it was a pharmacy. To excuse herself, she said she was the cleaning lady and couldn't help me. I replied, asking if the cleaning lady wore the same uniform as them and if she ate there too. She was speechless. What I mean is, I found it unbelievable how little humanity a helpless, bleeding person could have when there were other people inside, and they wouldn't even open the door. It seems they're only interested in making a profit, not in human decency. I hope this review helps people know what kind of people they're dealing with when they go shopping.

I visited the pharmacy at Plaça Nova last week seeking treatment for Mallorca acne (Acne Aestivalis). After describing my symptoms, the pharmacist immediately handed me a spray for €30 without any warnings, or additional infos regarding the strengths of the spray, telling me simply to apply it to the affected areas.
Before using it, I checked the packaging, but it lacked detailed safety information, and the QR code on the bottle led to an unlinked page. Right after applying the spray, my skin experienced a severe chemical reaction and burn — it became very red, hot, and irritated, forcing me to wash it off immediately.
After doing my own quick research, I discovered that this product was far too aggressive and completely unsuitable for my type of acne. Instead of soothing my sun-damaged skin as I needed, it made things much worse. The pharmacist gave me the entirely wrong product and failed to inform me about any potential risks or its high strength.
While I did get a refund when I returned to explain the situation, the interaction felt very unprofessional, as if they just wanted to get rid of the problem quickly. I am extremely disappointed with how skin treatments are handled here and the lack of proper professional guidance.
I would never leave this pharmacy without double checking the products they hand out ever again, for my own safety!!

I went to this pharmacy for a "feminine emergency" and was attended to by a woman who put her professional ethics into practice by scolding me for my lack of foresight (as if she were my mother). Basically, I heard all the nonsense a woman needs to hear in those delicate moments.

Ignore the 1-star review from someone named "Nicolas." He clearly didn't understand that the receptionist has a disability, and that the entire history of this place is a human story, not a story about medicine! The film in the renovated basement, subtitled in French, explains this perfectly. And you have to open your eyes and your heart in places like this. As for the 1 euro, give 5 instead; you'll feel better! I highly recommend it!

1 star because I can't give ZERO STARS.
TERRIBLE PHARMACY FOR BEING ON DUTY. This isn't the first time there's been an issue with this place. TODAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2026, I went there with an emergency prescription and spent 10 minutes ringing the doorbell, almost waking up the neighbors, and in the end, NO ONE ANSWERED. I went back home without my medication. I'll see what I can do until the pharmacies open their normal hours tomorrow. They're so irresponsible that I should report them. IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO SERVE PATIENTS, PLEASE REQUEST THAT THEY BE REMOVED FROM THE LIST OF EMERGENCY PHARMACIES BECAUSE IF SOMEONE HAS A LIFE-OR-DEATH SITUATION, well, we all know what the outcome would be. INDIFFERENT!

They're so unfriendly and they never leave. Especially the blonde lady with curly hair, she's so unpleasant, that's why I never come here, not even if I absolutely have to, unless it's an emergency. It's shameful.

The worst pharmacy in Ciutadella.
Seeing the other reviews, I'm glad to see we all agree: terrible service.
I got stuck with "black-framed glasses," a Mafalda-esque cousin and aspiring doctor...
If you're looking for a truly unpleasant experience, this is the place, which is a big plus when you're sick. They proclaim a cure from the start, say yes!... and then leave with arrogance and humiliation.
The worst thing you can have in this life is a lack of basic human decency.

Many thanks for attending to my small emergency.
Excuse the review, but I had to say it.
(In front of the pharmacy there is an impressive, thousand-year-old olive tree, which does not say anywhere where it was uprooted. I propose that all customers, take advantage of the visit to the pharmacy, to give it an urgent hug, which is very sad and needs a little love.)

Practical Tips for Using Pharmacies in Ciutadella de Menorca
To ensure a smooth experience when visiting a pharmacy in Ciutadella, it helps to understand the local customs and regulations. While the service is professional and efficient, the system differs slightly from other parts of the world. The following tips will help you navigate your healthcare needs effectively while on the island.
1. Check the "Farmacia de Guardia" Schedule
Pharmacies in Spain do not operate 24/7 individually. Instead, they rotate on-call duties. If you need medication late at night or on a Sunday, you must find the designated duty pharmacy. Look for the schedule posted on the door of any closed pharmacy; it will list the address of the one currently open.
2. Bring Your EHIC or Travel Insurance Details
If you are a visitor from the EU, carry your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). While this mainly helps with public health centers, it can assist with identifying your details. For non-EU visitors, having travel insurance details is useful, especially if you require a more expensive medication that you might want to claim back later.
3. Don’t Hesitate to Ask for Generic Brands
Spanish pharmacists are highly trained and will often ask if you prefer the "generic" version of a medication. This is a standard practice to save you money. The generic version contains the exact same active ingredients and is strictly regulated by the Spanish government.
4. Learn Basic Spanish or Catalan Terms
While many pharmacists in tourist areas speak English, knowing a few key phrases can be invaluable, especially if you visit a pharmacy in a residential neighborhood. Knowing how to say "I have a headache" (Tengo dolor de cabeza) or "I need this medication" (Necesito este medicamento) can speed up the process.
5. Pharmacies Are More Than Just Medicine
If you have a minor cut, a rash, or a mild allergic reaction, the pharmacy is the fastest place to get help. Spanish pharmacists are legally allowed to assess symptoms and dispense appropriate over-the-counter treatments without you needing to wait for a doctor’s appointment.
6. Keep Your Receipts
Always keep the receipt provided by the pharmacy. If you purchased a product that doesn’t work or you need to exchange it, the receipt is required. More importantly, if you are a resident or expat, some pharmacy purchases may be deductible on your annual tax return.
7. Carry Identification
If you are purchasing certain controlled medications or need to pick up a prescription issued by a local doctor, you will need to show identification. A passport or a national ID card is usually sufficient. This is a security measure to prevent the misuse of prescription drugs.
8. Respect the Queue System
When entering a pharmacy in Ciutadella, you may not see a formal line. However, locals usually keep a mental note of who arrived before them. It is polite to ask "¿Quién es el último?" (Who is last?) to ensure you take your proper turn without accidentally skipping anyone.
Ciutadella de Menorca offers a robust network of pharmacies that blend modern healthcare with traditional Mediterranean hospitality. The professionals working in these establishments are dedicated to ensuring both locals and visitors receive the care they need to enjoy their time on the island safely. Whether you are dealing with a minor ailment or a specific medical requirement, you can rest assured that the pharmaceutical care here is of a high standard.
Taking a few minutes to locate the pharmacy nearest to your accommodation upon arrival is a wise precaution. It allows you to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery, delicious food, and rich history of Ciutadella, knowing that help is close at hand if you ever need it.
