Mahón, the understated capital of Menorca, offers a shopping experience that feels refreshingly authentic compared to the bustling resorts of Mallorca or Ibiza. Here, you won’t find rows of identical souvenir stands or overwhelming international chains dominating the port. Instead, the city presents a curated mix of family-run boutiques, traditional artisans, and stylish concept stores that reflect the island’s unique character.
Navigating the retail landscape of Mahón is a delight because the geography is compact and walkable. From the bustling fish market area to the shaded, narrow lanes of the old town, every turn reveals a storefront steeped in history or bursting with contemporary Mediterranean design. Understanding the distinct personalities of the different neighborhoods is the key to unlocking the best local finds.
The city is effectively divided between the working waterfront, the historic center, and the modern commercial arteries. Whether you are hunting for the perfect pair of handcrafted leather sandals, a bottle of premium local gin, or high-end fashion, Mahón has a dedicated district for you. The charm lies in the contrast between the gritty authenticity of the port and the polished elegance of the pedestrianized streets above.
Shopping here is not just a transaction; it is an immersion into the slow-living ethos of the Balearics. Many shops close for a leisurely afternoon siesta, reopening in the early evening when the golden light hits the limestone buildings. Timing your excursion to align with local customs will make the experience significantly more enjoyable and productive.
For visitors looking to take home a piece of Menorca, the focus should be on quality over quantity. The island is renowned for its shoemaking heritage, particularly the traditional avarcas sandals, as well as its distinct gin distillation process. Seeking out these local specialties ensures that your purchases are meaningful and directly support the island’s economy.
To help you plan your itinerary, we have mapped out the most compelling commercial zones. These areas have been selected based on their concentration of unique retailers, aesthetic appeal, and the overall visitor experience. Rather than wandering aimlessly, use this guide to target the streets that best match your shopping style.
Below is a curated guide to the districts that offer the best retail therapy in the capital, ranging from historic markets to designer streets.

Nice place reconversion!
Small shops, bars, concerts...
At the under level you find a small supermarket (not the cheapest , nor the best fruits... But interesting to refill your backpack). For the fruits, prefer the local stand...
For the WC, plan 1euro or your NFC card.
BUT be patient as the card system is slow and really reliable...
Marleen Vanstraelen★★☆☆☆
Not very tasty, food not really warm, pricy for the quality offered. The wine was nice and the setting also.

Great collection of shops with a supermarket in the basement. Great coffee

Fantastic area of Maó, teeming with fresh and locally sourced/made produce. This includes fruit, vegetables cheese and wine. There were also a few restaurants and eateries in the vicinity serving traditional dishes + tapas. Public toilets are also available. We purchased a fair few items from the market, all of which were unsurprisingly delicious and high quality. It really is pleasant to see such a strong community spirit here; a rare gem indeed.

Very nice part of Mao.
The food we ate from merca tapas (pictured) was very dry and wouldn't recommend, but everything else looked nice within the food market.
Beautiful area with a nice selection of shops.
Unfortunately we weren't aware of the opening times and arrived just as a lot of shops were closing haha but we will come back earlier one day to really experience the shops.

Visited on 19th and 20th July 2024: this place is less than a 15-minute walk away from Seth Port Mahón, where we were staying. There are a few small cafés, clothes stalls, shoe shops, cheese shops and stalls, a couple of off-licences, a mid-sized supermarket (very well stocked) and a few restaurants. The historic building is also of interest. A good place to stock up on essentials, browse and cool off. There are also public toilets available (none of which appeared to be wheelchair accessible).

Little gem hidden inside the fish market.
Pinchos is the way to enjoy Spanish food, and there are bags and bags of it!!

Really good value at 15 euros for an all you can eat buffet.

It's quite small if to compare with modern European malls. But the staff is very kind and helpful and you can find everything you would need on the island

Biniprue does it all. Groceries, electrical goods, clothes, coffee shop, restaurant.
It's spotless. Free underground carpark. Clean toilets.

Great buffet with a wide variety of fresh and tasty dishes! From salads and paella to meats, fish, and desserts—everything was delicious. The place is clean, the staff is friendly, and the price is very reasonable. Perfect spot for a relaxed meal with lots of options. Definitely worth a visit while in Menorca!
Alexander Nacke★★★★☆
Good little shopping centre features a supermarket, a bakery and cafe and now a restaurant upstairs and most importantly there is FREE parking in the underground garage. Good for a browse, and there are usually some clothes bargains to be had upstairs in the clothes section. Also, food for topping up your holiday cosmetics and lotions, and if you've forgotten any holiday clothes.

What's not to love!!. The food and the drink is amazing. Staff are helpful, but not particularly friendly or welcoming. But the food is stunning! One of my favourite must have places to go when I visit mahon.
mage mage★★★★☆
It wasn't a must-see, but it was lovely to visit, small but welcoming.
I tried different things. Oysters are fresh.
The best was the spicy tuna at Sa Llauna.
The polpo with paprika was really bad and impossible to chew at La Faim, I couldn't eat it, but the fried crunch was good.
Also, the croquettes with Mahon cheese were ok at Dalrit Cas Fuets.
I drank mosto, grape juice, it was good.
Maurizio de Pascale★★☆☆☆
It looks amazing when you walk in, but then you quickly realize all the food comes from the fridge and goes to the microwave...

Local wall art is beautiful. Its nice to grab some food, short walk and watch high end yachts come in. Food was good. Friend had his dog with us and was told dogs were ok, then they weren't, then they were again, and the refused to give us a bowl of water for him, hence the stars
Chris Shapland★★★★☆
Fantastic old fish market selling a range of fresh fish and seafood.
Nice courtyard with toilets and benches and tables.
Inside you can buy the most amazing pinxos!!

I wouldn’t usually rate shops like these with 5 stars, but i am thoroughly impressed. Clean modern layout, helpful staff, quality clothes, and great affordable prices. Great shop, will definitely be coming back soon!
vanessa bell★★★☆☆
Good clothes but awful staff training and customer service.
I was in a changing room and I invited my mother in for her opinion. We didn’t know that only one person was allowed at a time. I was half undressed when member of staff flung open the curtain. I was uncomfortable with her seeing me half undressed and the shop floor and the queue outside also got a pretty good view.
Please can staff be properly trained if this situation occurs.

I personally like this shop. It's bright and airy, with plenty of room to browse. Economical prices. Good size individual changing rooms. Very helpful staff. It's 10/10 from me!

Great clothes for the price...sizes could be more generous, or maybe sell size XL...we are not all teenagers....and older ladies like to look in fashion too..!!!!

A great all-round shop for groceries, electronics, gardening supplies, plumbing, electrical bits, DIY essentials, and much more. There's even a café downstairs, which is perfect for a quick break while you're shopping.
They stock a fantastic range of quality brands at very reasonable prices, and the staff are always friendly, helpful, and genuinely happy to assist. It's also become a bit of a meeting place for the English community on the island.
Highly recommended.
Gerhard Geldenhuys★★★★★
My new favourite supermarket, much better than anyone else in town. Great selection, love the butchery and wine section. Also has its own cafe.
Graham Aley★★★☆☆
Good selection of fresh and prepacked products. Also has a home store upstairs which sells everything from fridges to hats and paella pans. What tips it for us is they let you bottle your own fresh orange juice.
Menorca Georgie★★★★★
Our favourite place for a freshly roasted chicken - very tasty but not too salty and packaged in cardboard and foil not plastic. Everything you need for DIY upstairs when other shops may be shut and very good prices for electrical goods.
Gary Schofield★★★★★
Everything you need under one roof. Maybe a little pricier than the discount stores, but no complaints. The fresh chicken we bought was absolutely delicious. So much better than 🇬🇧 version.

After three night at three different restraunts near by and truly amazing food we called in here..
Simple food ..burgers..pizza.poppcorn chicken.chips ECT .. the burger was cold and the meat was full of fat .. they even managed to f#@k up frozen popcorn chicken bites..then robbed us for 40€ for it and didn't even wear a ski mask.. I don't mind paying for food..usually 100+ € a meal each night the other three before..if ur on a budget and don't mind proper sh@te food and a touch of the del trotters the next day give it a whirl

Great selection of gifts, toys, miscellaneous items from Menorca. On many items prices lower than elsewhere. Table games, snooker and few other entertainment machines in the courtyard as well as a bouncy castle. Make sure to drop by the shopping bar on the courtyard.
Neil Scholes★★★★★
There is a gift shop here that is typical to rest of the area. There is a small arcade with pool, air hockey, house of dead 3 and time crisis (forget which one). Across from it is a great little pub which does food and shows football and sports.

I've had clothes from Pou Nou since i was 10 years old. Quite literally my favourite tshirts.
Though after buying some end of season tshirts, they seemed to be falling apart in some places quicker than usual.

Access is down a few steps into this nice & brightstore which offers a very good selection of clothing & accessories for men, women & children. If you want something a little bit different & good quality clothing style then look no further than the Pou Nou brand .There's changing rooms available in case you need to try anything on as I did ,when I wasn't too sure if I needed a medium or large t-shirt. I found the shop staff to be very pleasant when I made my purchase.I do recommend a visit even if its just to have a browse round.

As always, everything was perfect. She's a true professional and a wonderful person. It's worth calling ahead, as she's a very busy hairdresser. They also offer laser hair removal, eyebrow shaping, and manicures. For more information, ask Carmen, the owner and one of the best hairdressers I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Thank you so much! Best regards.

We purchased several items, women's shoes, a backpack, and a sweater. The staff in the store were kind and courteous, and the products were of good quality.

We stumbled upon this shop during our stay in Menorca. All their bags and baskets are beautiful and very reasonably priced.
The service was excellent. We had bought a large wicker basket, but since we had to fly back, in case they made us check it, we decided to exchange it for a smaller one, and they didn't hesitate at all.
Highly recommended! We'll definitely be back when we return to Menorca.

I loved it! Carmen is a super good professional and has given me a lot of good advice. She also gave me a very nice and comfortable cut. I will definitely be back 🙂
Tips for a Successful Shopping Trip in Mahón
To maximize your time and budget in the capital, it helps to understand the local rhythm and customs. Menorca is not a 24/7 shopping destination, and the best finds often require a bit of insider knowledge. Here are a few practical guidelines to ensure your retail experience is seamless and rewarding.
1. Respect the Siesta Hours
The most common mistake visitors make is heading out to shop between 1:30 PM and 5:00 PM. Most independent boutiques and family-run stores in Mahón close during these hours. Plan your shopping for the morning or wait until the town comes alive again in the early evening, when the atmosphere is at its most vibrant.
2. Prioritize Menorcan Craftsmanship
While it is tempting to buy generic Spanish souvenirs, Mahón specializes in specific artisan goods. Look for authentic avarcas sandals, which are handmade on the island using recycled car tires for the soles. Additionally, Mahón is famous for its gin, which is derived from wine rather than grain, giving it a distinct flavor. Seek out local leather goods and ceramics rather than mass-produced items.
3. Bring Cash for the Markets
If you plan to visit the Claustre del Carme market or the fish market area, having cash on hand is essential. While many high-street fashion stores accept all major credit cards, local producers, antique dealers, and food stall vendors often prefer or exclusively accept cash for smaller transactions.
4. Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes
The historic center of Mahón is characterized by steep inclines and polished cobblestone streets. If you are walking from the port up to the old town, the climb can be strenuous. Wearing sturdy, comfortable footwear will allow you to navigate the slopes and uneven surfaces safely while carrying your purchases.
5. Ask About the "Tax-Free" Shopping
If you are a non-EU resident, you can benefit from tax-free shopping on purchases over a certain threshold. Look for the "Tax Free" sticker in store windows. Always carry your passport with you when shopping, as the retailer will need to verify your residency status to issue the necessary paperwork for your VAT refund at the airport.
The joy of shopping in Mahón lies in the discovery. It is a city that rewards the curious wanderer who is willing to step off the main plaza and peek into a hidden courtyard or a basement workshop. The lack of aggressive sales tactics allows you to browse at your own pace, creating a relaxed environment that feels worlds away from the commercial pressures of larger capitals.
Ultimately, the items you bring home from Mahón will likely be items you treasure for years. Whether it is the soft leather of a new pair of sandals, the botanical notes of a local gin, or a piece of pottery that matches the blue of the Mediterranean, these purchases serve as tactile memories of a city that values tradition and quality above all else.
