After an afternoon spent wandering the hallowed halls of the Museo Reina Sofía, standing face-to-face with Picasso’s Guernica or contemplating the surreal works of Dalí, you will likely find yourself craving a distinctly Spanish form of sustenance. The area surrounding the museum, known as the Barrio de las Letras and the fringes of Lavapiés, is a gastronomic playground waiting to be explored. Here, the tradition of "ir de tapas" is not just a meal; it is a social ritual, a chance to slow down and savor the moment.
The challenge, however, is separating the authentic, soulful institutions from the tourist traps that line the main thoroughfares. You want the places where the locals stand shoulder-to-shoulder at the bar, arguing passionately about football while a bartender pulls a perfect caña. You want the sizzle of garlic prawns, the sharp bite of aged Manchego, and the unctuous richness of jamón ibérico de bellota.
This guide is designed to bridge the gap between the art world and the culinary world. We have navigated the narrow, winding streets of the Atocha and Lavapiés neighborhoods to curate a list of the most memorable spots for a post-museum feast. These are places that respect tradition while often injecting a modern flair, ensuring your cultural day ends on a deliciously high note.
Whether you are looking for a quick bite standing up or a leisurely sit-down session with a glass of vermouth, this area has it all. The proximity to the museum makes these spots incredibly convenient, but their quality is what makes them essential. You will find that the best way to understand Spanish culture is often through its food, one toothpick-skewered bite at a time.
Below, we have compiled our definitive list of the best tapas bars near the Reina Sofía. Each entry has been selected for its unique character, consistency, and ability to provide an authentic taste of Madrid. Prepare to embark on a culinary journey that rivals the masterpieces you have just seen hanging on the walls.

The place was quite ok. The food was good but nothing that I blew my socks off. I felt like the restaurant itself was a bit touristic. Staff was accommodating and nice.
Tim Atanacio★★★★★
Incredible restaurant! The food tasted extremely fresh and authentic and was served quickly. Marci (I believe he’s the owner) was incredibly kind and accommodating. Even though there wasn’t a table available for my party when we arrived, we only had to wait for less than 10 minutes.
Now about the food. Each bite kept getting better and better! We ordered the Jamon Imperico, Bull Tail Gyoza, Honey Eggplant and the Crispy Fried Pig Ear and all of them were delicious! This was also enough food for 4 people. The jamon especially was some of the best we had during our trip. We would definitely come back!

Great place for tapas. There might be a bit of a wait, but totally worth it. Everything was super delicious, staff was nice.

Although the atmosphere seemed inviting, we were disappointed in the end.
First, the service was a bit slow. And not the friendliest we had encountered while on our trip. So not a good start.
When reviewing the menu, we ordered several tapas for the table. Once they arrived, we sampled all and felt the food lacked freshness compared to all the others we tried over the last several days.

Yummy food! Good portions! Good drinks! Nice small place with good service. The guys are funny too. Gave us Americans some shots and recommendations for churros as they were closing late on a Sunday night. Awesome experience! The area outside is very nice too. Shops, more restaurants and good views.

Great restaurant with a bar area at the front and tables at the back. The tables for 2 are tiny and you are very close to the next table, we were lucky in that both neighbouring tables were finishing up as we arrived. Service was very efficient. Food was delicious. We had a bottle of wine (16.50),baby squid with salad, tortilla and a beef dish. The squid was so good we ordered a second portion. The bill came to a reasonable 42.40

We had a wonderful time at Taberna El Sur. The service was amazing as was the food. It was very busy, despite being fairly early on a Monday evening, and the crowd looked to be made up of more locals than tourists, which is always a good sign.
We had the iberico plate, moussaka, pork cheeks, octopus and garlic prawns. The only slight miss was that the prawns had a bit of grit in them, though the flavor was great. We tried a number of Spanish wines, each better than the last. Highly recommend.

we had a fantastic experience dining here! first of all, the restaurant is small but cozy and clean, with the staff welcoming us in as soon as we stepped through the door. the menu is english-friendly, so it was easy for us to order traditional spanish food. my favourite was the Chipirones a la plancha, the squid 🦑was seasoned well and cooked to perfection, happiness in every bite! the mayo paired really well with it, as well as the fresh salad. it was also nice to try the ham/mushroom croquetas and Tortilla de Patatas 🥔. the sweet and refreshing sangria was also the perfect drink alongside the dishes on a hot day. the host also gave us complimentary bailey shots after our meal, which was so nice 🫶 really recommend this place if you're looking to try some traditional, authentic spanish food and tapas!!! 💪🍷

We dined here as a group of three and had a great experience. The food was really delicious, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming, which made our meal even more enjoyable. Definitely a great place to enjoy Spanish food in Madrid. Highly recommended!

This was not our first visit to this restaurant. We have been a number of times before, but I decided it was time for an update. This little bar is not a super deluxe dinning establishment, it is a wonderful Taberna with a good range of drinks including vermont on tap, typical of so many bars in Madrid. The wine list is small with a reasonable selection of good priced wines. A wonderful selection of starter and main dishes to enjoy. Don't over order there isn't the space on your table, service is good even when very busy. Tables are small and the stalls for table eating are smaller than most, but don't let this deter you, there is a bench seat against the wall running both sides of the entire length of the dinning area. It always appears to be busy so it can feel a little cramped, but that all adds to the atmosphere. During our meal we spoke to our neigbouring tables on one side a couple from Canada who first visited with their son and this was their second visit. On another table sat 4 young students they dine here regularly. Considering this the age ranges from young 20's , a couple in their 50's and us two young at hart retired 69 & 73 year oldies. I hope this all helps explain the warm welcome and wonderful atmosphere that makes this restaurant our favouite when visiting Madrid and I do suggest you give it a try, but remember it is a bar not a 5star restaurant, but excellent value for money Our bill may not be typical of others but we did go a little overboard with 4 starters between us, 2 mains and a shared desert not to mentioning bottles of wine, water, beer, liquors and coffees. Our total spend does include our tip for the great service.

We ordered a full plate of pawns with garlic, but there was only 8 small pieces of pawns for €13.5, totally looks like a medium size dish. Double checked with the waitor, he said it is a full plate. Such a scam for tourists. The pawns tasted like frozen for a long time and the tail is even black, definitely not fresh at all. Paella was pre-made which was served 5 minutes after we ordered. Service was poorrrrr. Waitor was banging the spoons all the way to our table. Horrible experience. Worst meal in Spain.
Arien Yang★★★★☆
The risotto was rich and delicious, the seafood was very fresh, the location was close to the train station and Sofia Art Center. Highly recommended 👍
Ryan Cedergren★★★★☆
Tasty spot, make sure to stick to the Spanish dishes here. Paella was pretty good and came out hot. Staff was friendly and quick.
Jerry★★☆☆☆
The location of this restaurant is excellent, right near the Reina Sofia Museo making it a convenient stop to rest and grab a meal after a visit.
Unfortunately, the food quality was very disappointing. You can imagine the quality of a seafood paella that is served just five minutes after ordering — the seafood was clearly not fresh. The mussels were small, with the meat separated from the shells.
The large portion of calamari made us wonder if we were mistakenly served the small portion instead, there were only 6 small pieces in total.
I honestly wonder whether the owner or the chef has changed. We came here based on positive reviews from others, but it turned out to be a very poor experience.
Eugenio Rivera★★★★☆
Great food...impressed by the fried eggplant, moussaka and spinach ravioli (highly recommended). Quick service. Still, they have to work the seafood paella and get a better quality steak. Seats are Japanese style short but definitely eat again there. Great beer. Good house wine.

Brilliant concept, lovely staff, nice environment and absolutely amazing food! Everything was very good, came super fast, and the staff member serving us was really sweet.
Great service and even better food. Delicious! This is a MUST-EAT in Madrid!

We‘re a group of 5 German and 2 great Spanish personalities. This is still and was an amazing place to enjoy Spanish food on a really really high quality - of course „just“ from our groups point of view. Tapas, meat, salads. Everything was on point and delicious!
Thank you and cant wait to come back 🙌🏻🙏🏻

The place is so delicious! We asked the waiter his advice on some of the dishes. We ended up ordering Piruletas se Queso Idiazabal, Huevos Rotos con Gulas y Gambas, Chipirones A la Plancha, two glasses of Tower Roble x 2 (Tempranillo).
We were thinking if we were hungry, that we could order more. However, this was the perfect amount. The food was so well cooked and thank you to Christopher and the team here 😊

We had a wonderful experience at Sukaldea Atocha in Madrid. From the very first moment, we were greeted with an exceptionally warm and friendly welcome, which made us feel truly valued as guests.
Despite arriving quite early for lunch, we were happily received — unlike some nearby restaurants that didn’t seem interested in serving customers at that time. Luckily, this led us to discover Sukaldea, and we couldn’t have made a better choice.
The food was excellent, freshly prepared, and full of flavor. What stood out even more was the incredible hospitality of the host, who repeatedly assured us that we could ask for anything we liked and they would gladly prepare it.
Outstanding service, delicious food, and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere. Keep up the great work, and thank you for such a memorable experience!
Ben Marcus★★★★★
The best tapas I've had in Spain. Not because they were innovative, but because they just tasted great. We had the ensalada burrata, tortilla española, pintxo solomillo de ternera, and the pintxo bacalao. Everything was perfectly cooked and flavorful.
The staff was friendly, and despite the minor language barrier, everyone worked to understand each other.
The restaurant is small and casual, perfectly understated for a snack or meal after visiting one of the nearby museums.

We were looking to have a quick bite before we go to our next destination around 7:30 pm on Saturday and we search a tapas restaurant close to us and we came across this restaurant. We wanted to seat outdoor and they have a big area for the outdoor dining which was amazing. The menu was simple with photos so no language barrier issues. Alvaro was our waiter and he was amazing. He was tentative and spoke English well so it made our order even easier. The staff were very friendly and we loved our experience. We wanted to stay for a drink for few minutes but we stayed for food and almost an hour. Definitely if you are thinking to relax, have great food and amazing service this is your place

Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard. Tapa Tapa is exactly that. A relaxed spot for sharing a few tapas, having a cold beer, and taking a break from exploring Madrid.
The tortilla was freshly made, the Iberian ham was exactly what you’d expect in Spain, and the croquetas disappeared much faster than planned. Nothing overcomplicated—just good ingredients done well.
If you’re looking for an authentic local tavern, this isn’t it. But if you want a lively atmosphere, reliable tapas, and a place where it’s easy to sit longer than you intended, Tapa Tapa is a solid choice.

This place is just PERFECT. Delicious food, fresh ingredients, and super friendly staff!! 10/10 recommend!
The seafood here is absolutely amazing, and I REALLY RECOMMEND the Black Rice - honestly a 15/10 dish, incredibly rich and divine. If you like seafood, you will NOT go wrong. The prawns and baby squid were also REALLY GOOD!
Huge thanks to the Rouss for being so accommodating and helpful, and to Isabel and Agustin for being such wonderful, attentive servers. You guys made our night even better.
The restaurant is very clean and has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It was truly a great dining experience - I’ll definitely be back!

Very nice place that we grabbed a quick lunch in. Unfortunately too early for tapas.... But the food was still quite good and the service was also very good.

We had a good experience at this place. The service was great and the food tasty. They have a “terraza” with shade which you will be so happy to enjoy in an early summer afternoon. We liked the vibe as it seems this is a spot for locals to enjoy a drink at any time.
Daniel Cairns★★★★☆
A fantastic place, it felt authentic and family run. Drinks were nice and the cheese&meat board was really good.
Staff are fantastic, funny and friendly.
With help of Google Translate we got there in the end with allergies. Staff were great.
Although there aren't gluten free options officially listed, if you explain you have an allergy they'll help you out
It's a bit expensive for what we got, but felt good paying it because it was so authentic.
Michele Chung★★★★☆
The tostada came with the drink as a free treat, the marinated anchovies was out of the menu and I liked it. The house croquettes were divine. I don’t drink alcohol so I had a watermelon juice which was on point. It’s quite busy and I can get why. Friendly staff too, you just need to be sure of what you want and ask for it.
Jeff Lee★★★★★
What a delightful restaurant and than you! I tried their set menu of the day - its not really menu del dia but it's a two-course set meal and I ordered a rioja on the side. Have tried their fried veal chops with rice and lentil soup and they were super yummy. Their complimentary entrada (bread with olive oil, tomato, egg and cheese) is absolutely divine. Only negative is the high price (27 euros), but I think the price is justified for such an amazing meal.

We had a great time here. Slow pace with a relaxing atmosphere in a garden-setting. Had an empanada that was good and great drinks. The food coming out looked great - esp the burger. Would want to see it in the evening with the lights in the trees on. A lot of people
coming from the museum so more tourist, but some locals.

A hidden oasis in the center of Madrid. We sat for a little while for a quick snack and a glass of wine, before continuing to the nearby sights. We ordered a cheese plate and a really fresh mozzarella di buffala, though slightly overpriced..The wine list was very good. The atmosphere in the garden is very casual and relaxing.
An overall nice experience.
TJ Costello★☆☆☆☆
By far the worst service of any restaurant we went to in Spain (not just Madrid). Ignored us, once order was taken- took forever to be delivered, wrong order served, had to go up to the bar to get an drink that I actually watched being made and we literally sat next to the wine station and waited 20 minutes for a pour. Food was ok but very small portions. With all the wonderful options in Madrid near the museum, walk a little further and avoid the stress of Arzabal.
Célia Maia★★★★★
What a sweet and lovely place. An indoor garden right in the heart of Madrid. So much greenery and such a fresh atmosphere. The staff are all extremely helpful and friendly. We wanted a low table for dinner, but we didn’t have a reservation, and they still managed to arrange one for us so we wouldn’t have to sit at the less comfortable high tables. I loved the food and the overall experience. I didn’t like the shrimp though—they were a bit undercooked for my taste. Impeccable service and ambiance! A magical retreat within a big, hot city.
William ORourke★★★★★
Arzábal at the Reina Sofía offers an elevated dining experience in a beautiful setting. The tapas are creative, flavorful, and made with high-quality ingredients. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxed, and the outdoor terrace is perfect for enjoying a long meal. Service is attentive and welcoming. A fantastic spot to pair with a museum visit or simply enjoy great food in Madrid.

El Minibar is an absolute gem in Madrid! The food is wonderful, offering creative and delicious tapas like the award-winning Tapa Bretón. The atmosphere is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home instantly. On top of that, the space is beautiful, cozy, and full of character. It is the perfect spot for a casual yet memorable dinner. Highly recommended!

A small place near central Madrid. Air conditioned which was a savior today at 98degrees. Had a tomato and lettuce salad, gazpacho, spiced potatoes and fried cod with shrimp. Everything was excellent and in tapas portions was more than enough for two people. All washed down with beer. The menu is larger and varied and portions can be tapas sized or larger for sharing with a bigger group. Definitely worth a lunch or dinner stop.

Excellent tapas experience in Madrid. I came here on a Sunday afternoon around 1:00 PM right when they opened, and within a few minutes the place filled up quickly. I didn’t have a reservation, but since I was dining solo they were kind enough to seat me. You may want reservations if you’re coming during busy hours.
I had the melted goat cheese appetizer with what tasted like fig jam and a balsamic glaze, paired with the bread they served, absolutely delicious and very rich in the best way. I also ordered the ham croquettes, which were excellent as well. Between those two dishes and two Cokes, it was more than enough food for one person.
The atmosphere is quaint and very Madrid. The staff was efficient and friendly. I read many great reviews beforehand and after eating here I understand why. A local favorite. Highly recommend if you’re looking for authentic tapas in central Madrid.
Timothy Redman★★★★★
My dining companion and I were looking for a quick drink and snack after touristing hard. We found this cozy place right off the main drag. We ordered drinks, and food, tuna tataki, and the duck confit. Both delightfully tasty, savory, and rich. What a treat! Our appetite satiated, we once again took to the crowded streets of Madrid.
Josh Siu★★★★★
Food was good. Service was good (although we heard one of the servers be a bit curt with the next table about having to buy food to sit at the table, not just drinks). They offered a free little tapa while we waited for our food. Space is a bit smaller so you might be at the bar during a busy time.
My spouse wanted lemonade but they didn’t have any. When asked for water with lemon and they cut an entire lemon to add to her water - awesome!
What to got:
- ham croquettes
- shrimp croquettes (a hint of spiciness)
- crispy wild boar (in a spring roll deep fried outer layer)

Tasty food and quick service!
The staff is very helpful and friendly. Close attention to food intolerances and allergies.
We chose this place since it was so close to the Reina Sofia Museum and we wanted to try typical food. We sat down as soon as we arrived and we ordered mainly fish-based dishes which all met our expectations.
Special mention to the bocadillo de Calamares.

A nice restaurant tucked away in a small street close to Reina Sofia museum. Friendly service, good vibes. They offer individual paellas compared to other places where you have to order two portions. Terrace surcharge is weird in my opinion but you can just sit inside.

I visited many tapas bars during my few days in Madrid, and this one left the strongest impression on me.
It was small, loud, and crowded like most places in the area during the evening. We had to wait for a table, and the one we got was in a less-than-pleasant corner of the basement. But… the food and the homemade vermouth were the best I’ve ever tried. Excellent taste and presentation. The waiter was very professional, which made the experience even better.
I would definitely recommend visiting!
Jordan★★★☆☆
Unfortunately the food didn’t match the fantastic service. We shared various plates such as the anchovies with tomato and bread ,the anchovies with blue cheese , cured ham which in fairness was very nice and smoky. The black pudding and also pork cheeks were very disappointing, dry and lacklustre.
The vermouth was exceptional as was the waiters service.
I feel sad the food wasn’t the same.
Columbus OH★★★★☆
We were seated downstairs, which was noticeably less appealing than the upstairs area. Our table was wobbly, and switching tables didn’t help. The bathroom door looked dirty, and the downstairs space overall felt unkempt. Service was very slow; the waiter was clearly working hard, running up and down the stairs, but simply couldn’t keep up.
That said, the food was tasty, especially the fish balls. We ended up ordering two. Main dish portions were on the small side though. If we had been seated upstairs, the experience might have been much better.
Lan Phuong Yu★★★★★
We arrived hungry at 4 pm on Friday after a long day of traveling. Got ourselves 2 stools and a table. Our waiter took care of the customers in the order they came in. We ordered what he recommended #1, 5, 9 and 2 glasses of house white. He gave us a some anchovies and chips while we waited.
All I can say is.. It was so delicious!
The tapas came in this order and one was better than before.
9. Smoked sardines on (freshly mashed tomatoes) toast.
5. Smoked salmon with tzatziki sauce (lovely black caviar) on toast.
1. Prawn with mayonnaise and spring onion spread on toast. It came out hot and the shrimp was fresh and cooked perfectly.
We ordered a third glass to share because the wine paired so well with the prawn toast.
We got full, happy, and satisfied.
We really enjoyed ourselves and highly recommend Taberna La Concha.
Barbara Bačurin★★★★★
NOT a tourist trap!
Get the prawn on toast as well as the pork in 3 cheese sauce on toast along with the vermouth cocktail. You will love it! From the service (Kristian was an amazing host!), the food, the atmosphere - its everything you want from a tapas bar on THE tapas street in Madrid. Genuinely sad we went there on our last night bacause we would definitely have come back multiple times during our stay.
Tips for Enjoying Tapas Like a Local
To truly maximize your tapeo experience near the Reina Sofía, it helps to understand the unspoken rules of the game. While tourists might sit down for a single large meal, locals tend to hop from bar to bar, enjoying a drink and a small plate at each stop before moving on. This allows you to sample a wider variety of flavors and experience the distinct atmosphere of each establishment.
- Time Your Visit Wisely: The Spanish eat late. If you arrive at 6:00 PM, you might find the kitchens closed or the bars empty. The prime time for tapas is between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM for lunch, and after 8:30 PM for dinner.
- Stand at the Bar: While tables are comfortable, the magic happens at the bar. This is where you get the fastest service, the freshest food, and the best interaction with the staff. Don’t be afraid to squeeze in; it is the authentic way to eat.
- Order the "Especialidad de la Casa": Every great tapas bar has one dish they are famous for. Look for chalkboards, handwritten menus, or simply ask the bartender, "¿Cuál es la especialidad?" Trust their recommendation over generic tourist menus.
- Master the Napkin Etiquette: You will notice napkins and toothpicks on the floor. This is not a sign of a dirty bar; it is a sign of a good one. It means people are comfortable, eating standing up, and dropping their used napkins without a second thought.
- Pair with the Right Drink: Tapas are designed to accompany drinks. While wine is excellent, try a caña (small draft beer) or a vermut de grifo (vermouth on tap) for a truly traditional pairing that cuts through the richness of fried or cured foods.
