Stepping out of the Reina Sofía after hours spent contemplating Picasso’s Guernica or Dalí’s surrealist visions often leaves you with a profound need to sit down, process the art, and recharge. The area surrounding Spain’s national museum of 20th-century art is not just a cultural hub; it is a vibrant neighborhood where the artistic energy spills out onto the streets. Whether you are looking for a quiet corner to read a book or a bustling bar to people-watch, the streets of the Lavapiés and Las Letras districts offer a refuge for every type of traveler.
Finding a quality coffee spot in such a heavily touristed area can be tricky, as the main thoroughfares are often lined with overpriced, lackluster options. However, locals know that just a few steps away from the main entrance lie hidden gems where the coffee is roasted with care and the atmosphere is authentic. From specialty roasters focusing on single-origin beans to traditional Spanish cafeterias serving the perfect café con leche, the variety is surprisingly rich.
This guide is designed to help you navigate the caffeine landscape surrounding the museum. We have walked these streets, tasted the espresso, and evaluated the ambiance to ensure you do not waste your valuable travel time on a bad brew. Our focus is on quality, proximity, and the overall experience, ensuring that your coffee break enhances your cultural excursion rather than detracting from it.
Whether you need a quick shot of caffeine before entering the museum or a comfortable seat to rest your legs after viewing the temporary exhibitions, you will find an option that suits your mood. The criteria for our selections include bean quality, barista skill, atmosphere, and the availability of light snacks or pastries. We have also considered the practicalities of travel, such as opening hours and Wi-Fi availability.
In the following curated list, you will discover spaces that double as art galleries, minimalist Scandinavian-style coffee bars, and historic institutions that have been serving the neighborhood for decades. Each entry offers a unique slice of Madrid life, proving that the area around the Reina Sofía is a destination for the palate as much as it is for the eyes.
Without further ado, here are the best places to grab a coffee near the museum.

Very tasty, fresh dishes. Cute cat on the coffee was an extra nice touch.
The food sizes were good value for money too.
Was pleasing to see a fully accessible (and clean) gender neutral toilet too.
Mind you, I don't think any of the inside seating is wheelchair friendly, but outside is.
We would happily come back again.
Thank you!

Fantastic brunch spot! Fresh, high-quality ingredients, excellent specialty coffee, and beautifully presented dishes. Friendly service, a great atmosphere, and outstanding value. One of the best breakfast and brunch experiences in Madrid. Highly recommended! What a breakfast in Madrid!

This spot is amazing! If you’re looking for whole fruits, whole vegetables, and really great fresh squeezed juices come here!
Everyone is friendly & the service is quick.
Every single thing I tried was delicious.
Gluten-free options bread, crêpes, and pancakes, and absolutely delicious coffee and tea.
I tried something every single day I was in Madrid because I loved it so much.!!

Had brunch here recently. Overall, it was alright and the atmosphere was nice, but I was a bit disappointed with the cinnamon roll as it didn’t taste fresh. The rest was okay, but I expected better, especially for the pastries.

A small, cozy spot with healthy and delicious food—perfect for lunch or a mid-morning bite. We had to wait a bit for a table, but it was definitely worth it. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the food feels fresh and thoughtfully prepared. A great place to relax and enjoy something wholesome.

We had a great time here. Slow pace with a relaxing atmosphere in a garden-setting. Had an empanada that was good and great drinks. The food coming out looked great - esp the burger. Would want to see it in the evening with the lights in the trees on. A lot of people
coming from the museum so more tourist, but some locals.

A hidden oasis in the center of Madrid. We sat for a little while for a quick snack and a glass of wine, before continuing to the nearby sights. We ordered a cheese plate and a really fresh mozzarella di buffala, though slightly overpriced..The wine list was very good. The atmosphere in the garden is very casual and relaxing.
An overall nice experience.

By far the worst service of any restaurant we went to in Spain (not just Madrid). Ignored us, once order was taken- took forever to be delivered, wrong order served, had to go up to the bar to get an drink that I actually watched being made and we literally sat next to the wine station and waited 20 minutes for a pour. Food was ok but very small portions. With all the wonderful options in Madrid near the museum, walk a little further and avoid the stress of Arzabal.

What a sweet and lovely place. An indoor garden right in the heart of Madrid. So much greenery and such a fresh atmosphere. The staff are all extremely helpful and friendly. We wanted a low table for dinner, but we didn’t have a reservation, and they still managed to arrange one for us so we wouldn’t have to sit at the less comfortable high tables. I loved the food and the overall experience. I didn’t like the shrimp though—they were a bit undercooked for my taste. Impeccable service and ambiance! A magical retreat within a big, hot city.

Arzábal at the Reina Sofía offers an elevated dining experience in a beautiful setting. The tapas are creative, flavorful, and made with high-quality ingredients. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxed, and the outdoor terrace is perfect for enjoying a long meal. Service is attentive and welcoming. A fantastic spot to pair with a museum visit or simply enjoy great food in Madrid.

Really great, best part may have been the appetizer I didn't have a pic but it's a platter with guac, hummus some other stuff. Really damn good, food was solid. They had a dj good house music. It was early and not many people there, but both my wife and I were pleasantly surprised. Also the paloma drink were fire, if I wasn't so exhausted from museums I would have stayed and drank a few more.

Pretty atmosphere, excellent service and delicious food. My wife had the Caesar's Salad which was huge and very delicious. I ordered the fried cod bites which were tender, moist, and perfectly seasoned. A great choice either prior to or after a visit to the museum.

The place itself is quite amazing. Large outdoor and indoor space with striking features. The food was very slow to arrive. The pasta was cold and did not have enough pesto. In addition the staff has perhaps forgotten how one smiles.

After spending time in front of Picasso’s Guernica, my brain cells felt thoroughly exhausted and I needed to recharge before continuing my visit to the Reina Sofía Museum. I found the terrace of Nubel on the lower level of the museum and, without expecting much, ordered a couple of dishes whose descriptions sounded tempting.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food in a place that could easily have been overpriced and mediocre—but wasn’t.
A delicious gazpacho was the perfect start, followed by a beautifully presented fish tartare with delicate, well-balanced flavors.
Nubel gave me exactly the energy boost I needed to continue exploring the museum and fully appreciate the works of Spain’s other great artists.
Madeleine Avanzado★★★★★
The morning crowd was a bit much for me and my daughter that day so we decided to take a break and grab an early (for Spain) bite around noon. The restaurant area was quiet and comfortable with whimsical menus and food presentation. Our server was very attentive and helpful to point out when we were overordering. Servings were very generous and definitely for sharing. Food tasted great. We got back to the museum to vastly reduced crowds.

I loved it here. The vibe is amazing, my favourite so far in Barcelona and Madrid. Lots of seating options, big windows, comfortable-looking chairs, tables for working or visiting.
The decaffeinado vanilla iced latte was delicious, although the apple cake was not my favourite, but that's personal preference as I was expecting a coffee cake texture. So that's my mistake for not looking closely ahead of time. The lemon coffee cake looked delicious.
I would absolutely love to come back and sit in. The service was lovely and worked with my broken Spanish.

This little coffee shop is such a hidden gem! The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, perfect for grabbing a cup of coffee and either relaxing or getting some work done. The coffee itself is excellent—smooth, rich, and clearly made with care.
What really stood out, though, was the service. Gloria, the host, was absolutely wonderful. She greeted me with a genuine smile and made me feel right at home from the moment I walked in. She took the time to recommend a drink based on what I like and even checked in to make sure everything was just right. You can tell she truly cares about every guest’s experience.
Between the quality of the drinks and Gloria’s warmth, this spot is definitely worth visiting. I’ll be coming back for sure!

Excellent coffee! Cozy!
Just two blocks South of El Prado, Eugene and his team provide excellent service, delicious food and pastries, and chill atmosphere for breakfast, lunch or early dinner. The early dinner (arrive by eight for 8:30 closing) is a plus when you don’t want to wait ‘til restaurants reopen for dinner after 8:30, and if you don’t want to just eat tapas again between five and eight. Includes super fresh salads, sandwiches, and pastries.
It’s our favorite place in the stretch between el Prado and Atocha Train Station on the edge of the delightful Las Huertas neighborhood.
Tómatelo con calma!

This café has that cute, cozy, local vibe. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the staff were very kind and friendly. It has a warm, simple, "homey" atmosphere! Natural pear and lemon juice, a delicacy. We served Tortilla de patatas hecha con huevos amperos, pan con tomate y ensaladita.❤️

This is a charming cute cafe with lovely food, nice ambience, good value for money & a very friendly host. The potato leek cold soup and quinoa salad is amazing, and the fish pie was simply delish. To pair that with sangria / tinto de verano tops it all.

Pristine service from Fernando, followed by the best lentil soup I’ve had in my life! The most unique thing here is the revolving menu on a daily basis. This component made me feel like I was 8 years old again at my Abuela’s house. Everything we ordered was simply majestic and this is a place that deserves much more accolades.

We went to Matilda after reading the reviews and will say that this place does surprise you . The food quality , taste and preparation is top class. We managed to get a table as we went in early but I can tell you that it is frequented by locals and tourists alike . We had avocado toast and a Spanish omelette and both were top class. Will definitely recommend to people visiting that area.

What a nice gem to find. It is a small cozy place. The waiter was wounderful a spoke very well English and French. He was paying attention to every little detail to make sure we had an extraordinary experience (which we had). We started with salad and gazpacho. I normally am not crazy about gazpacho but this one had watermelon in it, which intrigued me. What a great discovery!!! It was absolutely delicious and refreshing. We also had meat balls in tomato sauce and ham. Food & service were extraordinary. Very well priced and potions are generous. Best sangria I ever had. We were too full for desserts that looked fabulous on other tables. A must go place in Madrid

Cozy and aesthetically pleasing place. There’s no Wi-Fi or phone service, which can be inconvenient but it also encourages you to disconnect and actually connect with the people around you. Unfortunately, I wasn’t satisfied with my experience here.
When we arrived, the upstairs area was full, so they suggested we sit downstairs. We agreed, but the downstairs area had a very strong artificial air freshener smell, probably because of humidity or something nearby. The smell was overwhelming and honestly uncomfortable to breathe.
The lighting downstairs was also extremely dim and unpleasant. Most of the chairs and sofas didn’t feel very stable or comfortable either. I actually had to change my chair because it felt loose and unsafe.
The coffee arrived spilled into the saucer, and the sugar packet next to it was wet and unusable.
The staff also didn’t really speak English, which made communication a bit difficult.
On top of that, the cake I ordered arrived much later than the coffee, so by the time it came, my drink was already almost cold.
That said, the cake itself and the nachos we ordered tasted good.
But unfortunately, the coffee was not memorable at all, and overall the experience was disappointing.

Really nice breakfast/brunch place. Affordable, tasty and fresh. The only downfall was that we had to wait for a table a bit but it was well handled by the waiters. We got mascarpone and avocado toast, which were exceptional, along with two American sandwiches (burgers). Special thanks to the waiter that had his first working day - you did more than well managing our inquiries ;). I recommend!

Cute cafe where you can have an early breakfast. We enjoyed the avocado toast and sweet potato fries. The coffee is also delicious here. The inside is a little small so it may be difficult for parties larger than 4 to get a table

I’ve been here multiple times and genuinely love the coffee, which is why I was excited to finally try the brunch with a friend. Unfortunately, it was really disappointing. The pancakes were honestly inedible, you have to pay extra for every topping (which is fine), but even with fruit and syrup they were incredibly bitter, almost spicy in a wasabi-like way that scratched the throat. I managed to force down one thanks to the fruits and left the other. I’m surprised given how good the coffee is, I think there’s definitely room for improvement, especially considering you can find better brunch options at a lower price point nearby.

I stopped by for a lunch and I enjoyed my meal a lot. The atmosphere was a bit chaotic after a half-marathon, but I appreciated that staff tried to accommodate everyone as best as they could and did it with a smile.
One staff member spoke English which was very helpful.
The place seems popular among tourists and expats.
My sandwich was exceptional and served quickly. I wouldn’t recommend GF cookies - flavour was nice, but it fell apart as soon as you bite into it.
Overall, I pretty good option for a GF meal.

Hidden on a narrow street, this modern coffee shop is easy to miss but usually packed. We waited about 15 minutes and got seats at the counter. The croissant was fluffy and crunchy, and both the matcha and flat white were spot-on. Great vibe and quality coffee, really worth a stop!

Loved this place so much I came back the next day. A cute and cozy cafe with great lighting, good music, kind staff and wonderful food. Some of the tables are old Singer sewing tables which was such a nice touch. I tried the Turkish eggs the first day and added a side of halloumi (a must…it’s fantastic) and the next day I got the staff bowl with sweet potatoes, pulled pork, quinoa, etc. The food is comforting and flavorful while still feeling healthy. I also enjoyed an iced matcha latte with oat milk and another time tried their glow smoothie. Can’t recommend this place enough. I still have to go back to try the grilled cheese!

I had a wonderful experience at Nómade Café in Madrid and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy and welcoming brunch spot. From the moment I walked in, I felt the warm and relaxed atmosphere that makes this place so special. The interior is charming and comfortable, creating the perfect setting to enjoy a slow breakfast or a pleasant afternoon coffee.
One of the highlights of my visit was definitely the freshness of the food. Every dish tasted like it was prepared with high-quality ingredients and great attention to detail. The vegetables were crisp and vibrant, the bread was perfectly toasted, and everything was beautifully presented. You can truly tell that the kitchen takes pride in serving fresh, flavorful meals. Whether you choose a savory brunch plate or something sweet, the quality is consistently impressive.
Another aspect that made my visit memorable was the kindness and professionalism of the staff. The employees were incredibly polite, attentive, and friendly. They made sure we were comfortable, answered our questions with a smile, and created a genuinely welcoming environment. It’s always a pleasure to dine somewhere where the team clearly cares about customer satisfaction.
In addition to the excellent food and service, the prices are very reasonable for the quality offered. Considering the freshness of the ingredients, generous portions, and the central location, the café provides great value for money. It’s refreshing to find a place that combines high standards with affordable pricing.
Overall, Nómade Café is a fantastic spot in Madrid for fresh food, kind service, and fair prices. I will definitely be coming back on my next visit!

A stylish neighbourhood cafe, serving healthy food options. It’s not on the main street so you may not come across it on your way, but a little bit of pre-Madrid work might easily take you there. The reviews and ratings are highly popular. I was there by opening hour, so I didn’t experience any wait time, but when I was leaving, the place was full. It didn’t take too long after my order, and the filter coffee was served first. The ingredients were fresh and of high quality, which made the taste top-notch. The service team was attentive, and the prices were reasonable. Clean WCs, free WiFi, and spotless tables made my rating. A second visit was deserved.

Honestly my worst experience in Madrid so far. Wanted to enjoy a last coffee before I leave to the airport and have chosen this place for the relatively nice interior with lots of windows.
I unfortunately ordered some cappuccino & croissant at the bar already. (the waiter knew I‘m not gonna have a big meal to stay for an hour or two). If I had not ordered already, I would have left again.
Although I asked for a different table a couple of times, he insisted there is only this one table where I can sit down because the other ones are only for four people, even though there were tables for 2 people free and the restaurant was 90% empty all the time.
If he was too lazy to walk up the stairs to the nicer table, he could have just said it. Besides that, there were at least 5 larger tables unoccupied. It was clear they won‘t all be filled at the same time. In fact, they stayed free all the time. Funnily, I even had to wait until he cleaned the one table while all other ones had been free without me waiting.
I enjoyed the beautiful view towards the fire hose and stairs. At least, I closed the emergency exit right next to me on my own as it were 38 degrees outside and it was noisy from the road.
Cappuccino was watery with no proper foam, so ai even can‘t recommend the coffee…

Atacho La Rollerie in Madrid offers a charming atmosphere with stylish décor that makes dining pleasant and relaxing. The food is tasty and well-prepared, adding to the overall positive impression. However, the service does not match the quality of the setting or the meals. Staff seem inattentive and slow, which can be frustrating when expectations are high. In short, great ambiance and food, but service needs significant improvement.

Highly recommend this place for brunch!

Great place for an earlier breakfast in Madrid! Fantastic Benedict’s, cinnamon rolls and yogurt bowls. My wife and I shared a cinnamon roll with dulce deleche syrup, but skipped the toppings. My Benedict (la Parisienne) was truly delightful. It was Smokey and very filling. All breakfasts come with coffee, tea, or juice.

We had:
Tuna tartar - it was awesome with all the sides
Some steak - meat was really good, but side was not enough, and not so tasty (some kind of deep fried potato)
Desert - Carrot cake and Pavlova, perfect 😍
Service was okay, but their English wasn't, at the end we manage to comunicate.
For sure it's place with really good food and that's what matters.

Murillo Café feels like one of those places you don’t expect to find outside Venezuela. I tried several things and everything was on point, but the polvorosa de pollo really stood out. It instantly took me back to Venezuela, where I had it many times growing up, pure comfort food, the kind that brings memories with every bite.
The tequeños were light and crispy, not oily, and clearly made with care. The numpias were another favorite, crunchy, flavorful, and even better dipped in soy sauce, which adds a subtle Asian twist without taking away from what makes them special.
The sliders were kind of normal, nothing special.
What truly completes the experience is the attention. It’s warm, natural, and welcoming, making you feel at home without trying too hard. Murillo Café delivers authenticity, nostalgia, and genuinely good food.

What a cozy little cafe with sparkling holiday decoration. This is the second time I went in my Madrid’s visit and I will be back in my future visit. The food was authentic and absolutely delicious. We had “giant prawns” with garlic sauce with a hint of yummy spice, perfectly grilled cuttlefish (moist inside) and one pot seafood paella with rich savory rice as the base. The Sangria was delicious and generous, and the service was nice and friendly. It was a great meal both times especially the last night in Madrid with my friend!

Very disappointed with the size of food, just a small piece of bread with one egg for 8€ is diabolical, it wasn’t even spiced properly, sauce had no taste, I don’t eat a lot but even for me this portion was an air. Service experience not fantastic at all, we ordered 2 Pum Pum Benedict with 1 egg for each, the waitress brought only 1 portion and we where waiting like 10 min before we understood that second portion is not coming, when we asked about the second portion- waitress basically approved that she haven’t picked out order correctly and told that it’s because of “misunderstanding”, but I told clearly what we want to order. Coffee- for coffee we ordered matcha and cappuccino, and I just asked about the size of flat white, she told me that it will be in smaller mug, so I told that it will be just matcha and cappuccino for us. In a few minutes they brought all 3 drinks, thankfully we immediately told them that we were not ordering 3 drinks, flat white- was just a question. Payment- because of bad connection I was supposed to run my card 2 times, and it still was not working, so I paid with other card, now I hope that they won’t charge me twice. Overall- expensive, food with no flavour, super small portions, poor experience.

The food was nice but not really worth queuing ages for. The coffee was good though. I would probably visit again but only if there happened to be a table free when passing

A café full of character and style, tucked away on one of Madrid’s narrow streets. During off-peak hours, it offers a calm, soothing atmosphere—perfect for unwinding. The music sets just the right tone, the menu is varied enough to suit different tastes, and the service is excellent.
The only drawback is the limited natural light, as it’s located within a tandem-style building. However, this is nicely offset by the outdoor seating area, adorned with beautiful bouquets.
I’d happily visit again and would strongly recommend it. Clean restrooms are available downstairs.

Really good coffee and cakes- gluten free options. Did not have breakfast but menu and plates served on tables around me looked really good. Hopefully can come back with a bit more time to enjoy! Nice atmosphere and friendly service.
Tips for Enjoying Coffee Near Museo Reina Sofía
Navigating the coffee culture in Madrid requires a bit of local knowledge, especially in a neighborhood as diverse as this one. To ensure you have the best possible experience, we have compiled some practical advice based on how Madrileños actually drink their coffee. Whether you are a specialty coffee aficionado or simply looking for a classic experience, these tips will help you blend in and maximize your enjoyment.
1. Understand the Local Lingo
Ordering coffee in Spain is specific, and the terminology differs significantly from standard English coffee shop language. If you want a small, strong coffee with milk, you should order a cortado, not a latte. A café con leche is larger and milkier, typically served at breakfast, while a carajillo is a shot of espresso spiked with brandy or rum. Knowing these terms will ensure you get exactly the drink you are craving.
2. Timing is Everything
Spanish coffee culture is tied to the rhythm of the day. Most locals drink milky coffee (café con leche) in the morning before 11:00 AM. After lunch, around 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, it is common to order a café solo (espresso) or a cortado. If you order a large milky drink late at night, you might stand out as a tourist, but most cafes are happy to accommodate you regardless of the hour.
3. Toasted Bread is a Must
If you are visiting a traditional Spanish cafeteria rather than a specialty third-wave shop, do not skip the food menu. The tostada con tomate (toasted bread rubbed with fresh tomato, olive oil, and salt) is a staple of Spanish breakfasts and pairs perfectly with a strong coffee. It is an inexpensive way to fuel up before or after walking through the museum’s vast galleries.
4. Check for Closures and Siesta Hours
While the area around the Reina Sofía is busy enough to keep many places open all day, some traditional spots may close briefly in the late afternoon, typically between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Additionally, many specialty coffee shops close early, around 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM. Always check the current opening hours on a map application before walking a long distance, especially if you are visiting on a Sunday or a public holiday.
5. Wi-Fi and Workspace Etiquette
If you plan to use a cafe as a remote workspace, be aware that not all Spanish cafes welcome laptops. While specialty coffee shops are generally laptop-friendly during off-peak hours, traditional cafeterias are meant for socializing and quick breaks. If you see a "No Laptops" sign or notice the space is crowded with diners, it is best to enjoy your coffee and move on rather than setting up an office.
The beauty of the area surrounding the Reina Sofía lies in its contradictions. You can find a hyper-modern, minimalist space serving experimental coffee drinks just around the corner from a century-old bar where the waiter still shouts orders to the kitchen. This diversity allows you to curate your experience based on your energy levels and your desire for either solitude or social immersion.
As you plan your visit to one of Madrid’s most important cultural institutions, remember that the experience extends beyond the museum walls. Taking the time to sit in a local cafe, watch the ebb and flow of the neighborhood, and savor a well-made coffee is an art form in itself. It provides the perfect moment of pause between the masterpieces you have just seen and the vibrant city streets that await you.
