15 Best Bakeries in Paris

Paris remains one of the few cities in the world where the simple act of buying bread feels like a cultural ritual. The golden, flour-dusted baguette tucked under the arm is not just a stereotype; it is a daily reality for millions of Parisians. For visitors, navigating this landscape of butter and dough can be overwhelming, as the city boasts over a thousand boulangeries.

However, not all baked goods are created equal, even in the gastronomic capital of France. While industrial frozen dough has crept into some storefronts, a dedicated movement of artisans continues to push the boundaries of fermentation and flavor. The true magic of Paris lies in finding those establishments where the crust shatters perfectly and the crumb is creamy and open.

This guide is curated for those who take their carbohydrates seriously. We have walked the arrondissements, braved the morning queues, and tasted the butter-laminated pastries to bring you a definitive list of the best ovens in the city. Whether you are seeking a traditional prize-winning baguette or an innovative sourdough loaf, these addresses represent the pinnacle of the craft.

The criteria for this selection go beyond just the taste of a single croissant. We evaluate consistency, the quality of sourcing for butter and flour, and the mastery of technique. A great bakery must excel not only in bread but also in viennoiserie and pâtisserie, proving a holistic command of the oven.

To help you plan your culinary itinerary, we have organized the list geographically. You will find historic institutions that have served presidents alongside trendy new wave bakers experimenting with ancient grains. Each entry offers a distinct experience, but all share a common dedication to excellence.

Before we dive into the specific addresses, it is worth noting that Parisian bakery culture operates on a schedule. Many of these artisans bake throughout the day to ensure freshness, but the best selection is typically found between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Arrive early, bring cash for small purchases, and prepare to be patient.

Here are the 15 best bakeries in Paris that are currently defining the standard for French baking.

Fantastic bakery with creative range of desserts. I had the chocolate cake with hazelnut dacquoise, puffed rice praline, Bahibé cream, and hazelnut mascarpone chantilly cream, and it was absolutely outstanding. The combination of textures was ideal: the hazelnut dacquoise gave it a delicate nutty base, the puffed rice praline added a crunch, and the creams made the whole dessert smooth, rich, and luxurious. I would happily return here to try other desserts. This place totally worth the hype.

They have the most amazing croissants. If you go early in the morning, it’s fresh, warm and the best. I ate the croissant right on the street, and it was so delicious, I had to go back in and buy another one. It’s a small boulangerie, no place to sit. Grab and go!
Michael Kan★★★★★
This was the best croissant for me in Paris after trying six or seven boulangeries. The croissant has a nice soft butterier interior. The cheesy bread with sausage was also quite good too.

I tried both the croissant and the famous Roulé Sésame Noir at Boulangerie Utopie. The croissant was very good — soft, buttery and delicious — but for me it was missing a little of that crisp, flaky texture I really look for. So although I enjoyed it, I wouldn’t put it in my personal top 5 croissants in Paris. But the Roulé Sésame Noir is a completely different story. It’s difficult to even identify exactly what makes it so good. The balance of sweetness, softness and crispness, together with that distinctive touch of sesame, works incredibly well. Every bite has different textures and flavours, and somehow everything comes together perfectly. It’s one of those pastries that doesn’t just taste good — it leaves you genuinely happy and, for a few minutes, in a completely different world. For me, the Roulé Sésame Noir is absolutely the reason to visit Utopie. I would definitely come back for it.

Another day, another bakery to visit! We checked out this bakery and picked out two things to share: the sesame elcair and pain suisse. I enjoyed both of the items, but preferred the sesame eclair more. It was a nice and sweet taste infused with the black sesame flavor. The pain suisse was very flakey and filled with chocolate. It was also quite heavy, you should definitely share this!

I visited Du Pain et des Idées, and this bakery holds a special place in my heart. Every bread and pastry I tried was outstanding, and during my stay in Paris, I found myself coming back almost every day. The smell of freshly baked bread fills the shop, creating a wonderful atmosphere from the moment you walk in. Whether you choose a simple loaf or one of their famous pastries, the quality is consistently excellent. For me, this bakery became one of the highlights of my time in Paris, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

Beautiful spot but average pastries now. I remember loving this but now with heightened standards it is just ok. Specifically the croissant has less air than I remember and crumbles more. The chasson aux pommes was weird too, with a film over the apple. So yes the dough is good but the rest is nah.

Been coming here since years. The place will always be very special to me as it reminds me of my first trip to Paris with my late father. The aroma, the taste of slowly and perfectly baked Croissants and other breads and the warmth of the team has stayed the same, if not better. It's every bite worth the hype. Every time, I come to Paris, a visit to Du Painet des Idées is a must. And, I am never disappointed. It's not only a bakery or a 'touristy' spot: it is the true essence of Paris - a feeling of pure joy. The staff is very friendly, service is outstanding and interior is authentic Parisian. Absolutely love their powder blue packaging, so much like the clear skies on a quiet afternoon. Paris is dotted with some of the best bakeries in the world, and while I have travelled to many countries and tried Croissants and patisseries world over, the doors of Du Pain et des Idées will always be like coming home. Flan Boulanger,Mouna Au Sucre,Escargot Aux Pralines,Escargot Pistache Chocolat are all great choices with amazing taste. However, their classic Croissant is my all time favourite.
Paulina Chow-White★★★★☆
I was sent here by Claude - and other lists claiming it’s one of the best in Paris. The bakery did not disappoint, I had the Suiss and it was crispy and gooey in all the right places. I wished they served iced coffees here, it was 35 degrees plus when I went. But they were kind enough to direct me ‘next door’ which had a FANTASTIC iced latte. There were lots of goodies here, will try to return.

We stopped by Boulangerie Du Pain et Des Idées after seeing it recommended online. We tried the pistachio chocolate escargot and a croissant with chocolate and banana. The pastries were solid and well made, but the pricing was honestly shocking. Easily double what we’ve paid at equally good or better bakeries across Paris, and we’ve been here many times over the years. Nothing we had was bad, but there was a clear “tourist tax” at play for a place that has gone viral. In a city full of excellent boulangeries, it’s hard to justify going out of your way for pastries that are comparable to many others at half the price (or less). If you happen to be nearby and are curious, fine. But for visitors planning a special stop, there are countless neighborhood bakeries that deliver just as much quality, if not more, without the premium pricing and are much closer to where most people are staying. Look for a boulangerie without a long tourist line and everybody speaking anything but French. There you have a making of a local, non “touristy” bakery. This was not it. Update: having gone to other, closeby bakeries, I realize how outrageously overpriced these were, even compared to similar bakeries. Definitely go somewhere else.

Very busy but the queues were moving quickly. There is no place to sit so its all take away. Delicious pastries with a lot of variety. We had a pistachio éclairs & a plain butter croissant for only 4.5£! Eclair was full of fresh, mildly sweet cream that tasted indulgent & pistachio-y. & the croissant was so light and flaky. Absolute bangers!
Kristy★★★★★
Wow. This place is still drawing a queue for the croissant award it won back in 2018... eight years ago! Is it still worth the hype? My answer is a definite yes. Keeping both the quality and the volume this consistent for so many years is no small feat. People simply wouldn't still be lining up if the croissants weren't exceptional. And let's be honest, there have been eight other winners since then, so it's not as if there aren't alternatives. I was there at about 9.00 am. There was a short queue and it moved surprisingly quickly. They've had years to perfect the system, and it shows. Don't let the line put you off. You won't be waiting long. I don't really understand the complaints about the lack of seating or atmosphere. It's next to a metro entrance and a market. It's a working bakery, people! Do what the French do. Grab your croissant, pick up a coffee nearby, then wander to the nearest park or along the river and mindfully enjoy one of the best croissants you'll ever eat. Bonus points for doing it without an influencer photo shoot in sight (looking at you, La Carette!). The croissants are handmade and baked throughout the day, so there's a good chance yours has come straight from the oven. Eat it immediately. Don't save it for later. This is one of those moments that's worth enjoying exactly as intended -- straight black and white paper bag. And at just €1.20? That's Parisian public service if you ask me. I'd happily line up again. TIP: Find 'Square Danielle Mitterrand' a tiny gated public-garden where you can eat your croissant in. Less than a 10min walk away. Do some google research on this wife of former French President François Mitterrand. She was a liaison officer in the French Resistance.

Went here due to tons of reviews saying this is the best place to grab a Croissant and it did a good job 🤓. The Croissant and Pain au Chocolate is crispy, freshly baked and buttery. It doesn't sugary like the one i had in Germany and that shocked me. The "real" Croissant is what my French friend told me about this place and the prices are very reasonable. 🥖 There was a staff also helping people getting the cake first when there is a long line. Perfect help👍🏻 However the baguette was a bit cold when i bought it, i couldn't feel the taste that i was hoping for and really hard to eat 🥲 But overall it still worth it.
Mohammed Alasad★★★★★
We tried the croissant, and it was absolutely delicious. It had a perfectly crispy exterior with a soft, airy interior and a rich, buttery flavor. It was served slightly cold, but it was still clear that it was made to a very high standard. I highly recommend trying it.
Princess Zabala★★★★★
Croissant tasted really good! Fresh & tasty! I would recommend it but make sure to pair it with something warm! Hot chocolate or coffee would be great! Line was not that Long since it was raining staffs were fast! But I would say not that friendly expect the one in the cashier! Maybe they were tired already but still! Got confused who was really serving but in the end it’s the Food that matters 😅

This was the first place I tried when I went to Paris and thought wow, we are in for an amazing trip of food. But I quickly found out how good this bakery is compared to the rest! Would highly recommend 💪 Only downside is the seating is limited so you may need to takeaway, but definitely still worth it.

My fave local boulangerie during my paris stay - always stopped by for the best baguette tradition and lemon tarts!! Good prices and always super sweet service. Will miss having it so close by!
Luis Mendoza★★★★★
Amazing pastries and sandwiches with an affordable price. I went 3 times during my visit to Paris, absolutely recommended!
Sergio Escobar★★★★★
I ate my absolute favorite pastry ever at this place the brioche de Caramel. Filled with a delicious caramel cream, lots of filling. The girl that served me recommended the bread and she was right, she was friendly and spoke multiple languages. 5/5
Andrea Sepe★★★★☆
We are an Italian couple who love breakfast. We have tried several bakeries and we fully agree that this is the best in terms of quality and price. The only downside is that it is a bit cramped. It was closed this morning, so we went to another one that we won't name, and I can tell you that we all need this boulangerie because it is clearly superior in terms of quality and delicate flavors. I am critical, but this time, whenever I think of an excellent breakfast, they come to mind. With love from Italy, Andre & Lory ❤️🥐

Great little café in Paris! Excellent coffee, fair local prices (not touristy), fresh food, and a convenient menu with a few sandwiches and desserts. Everything we ordered was delicious. The service was outstanding, the staff was super friendly and even prepared a fresh Ham & Cheese croissant for us when they had run out. Perfect spot for a quick coffee and croissant. Highly recommended!

Just visited this place and everything was amazing. The sandwiches and pastries were all delicious, and the flan was definitely our favorite. Allan was the best - super kind and friendly. He helped us decide what to order and also gave us so many great recommendations for places to visit since it's our first time in Paris. Thanks again, Allan!
Janel Galindo★★★★★
I almost cried it was so good, beginning with the extreme kindness of the service. It was almost all locals standing in line and then when it was our turn to order, they were so great to explain in English and be patient and he actually made a fresh sandwich instead of handing a ready made in the case. And helped make decisions and it was a beautiful experience that even left a mark on my teenagers. Thank you for the incredible bread and pastries and coffee as well as the forever impression 🫶
Mia★★★★★
Everything I have tried were great. Flan is sweet and creamy. All is delicious and I really enjoy every of them!
Wen He★★★★★
The flan is perfectly done with soft melty inside and bit chewy thin outside. The vanilla beans are visible, so the fragrance is really sweet and strong.

Fantastic macarons, best we've ever had. Glad we came here to try Parisian macarons and the prices was better than most other shops we've seen. All the flavours we tried were delicious, the pandan was surprisingly refreshing and the black sesame was very well done. The kalamansi had a separate filling in the middle that was the right amount of fruity and tart and the lychee was spot on. Everything was light even though there was a good amount of filling. If you're looking for some of the best macarons than you really can't beat this place especially for the price. Highly recommend.
Heidi Esplin★★★★★
We found this great place to get macarons and it did not disappoint! They were SO good and I wish we would have had time to go back and get more! He was so friendly and helpful and took the time to explain the flavors! Highly recommend!
Janan Dea★★★★★
Gem La Patisserie is truly a hidden gem for homemade and perfect macarons. We came here twice. Once because we happened to stumble upon this place with already spectacular reviews. We stopped by and got a couple flavors and were immediately shocked at how flavorful each bite was. We tried the passion fruit, the pistachio (A MUST), Ube/Caramel, calamansi. Every bite tasted true to its flavor and was just a delight. We actually came BACK because we wanted to order another 6-pack as we left Paris. HIGHLY recommend this spot. The owner (his name begins with an ‘I’) is a gentleman and makes all the macarons himself in the early morning before the shop opens! He also takes orders if you pay in advance! We tried a few more flavors…. black sesame and IT LITERALLY IS JUST AMAZING! Incredibly powerful flavors. Pistachio, tastes like the nut itself. Passion fruit has literally passion fruit seeds because the ingredients are just so natural. Every part from the texture of the macaron to the cream, then to the flavor is done so well.
Ryan C.★★★★★
The best Macaron i tried in Paris. Possibly the best macaron i had for the interesting flavours from south east Asia. The Ube and Pandan Macaron is so good! A must try when in Paris! ☺️
Emma★★★★★
Hidden Gem!!! Their macarons were so good that we revisited and got some as souvenirs before our flight home. Absolutely loved their twist of South East Asian flavours with the traditional French delicacy, it’s truly refreshing. And it’s a small local shop run by a couple, you could see all the macrons freshly baked there. The lady owner was incredibly sweet and friendly. She would patiently explain each flavours to us and even let us try the macaron.

Came here early to try their croissants and they were really good! We got coffee, Croissants and the Tradition Chocolat. The Chocolat was unfortunately a bit too tough to chew, so we couldn’t finish it. The shop is quite small and there’s always a queue, but it moves quite fast. Overall, still worth a visit
Hanna Palanki★★★★★
Okay… this is my favorite bakery ever! I’ve been to many bakeries, but this one is by far my favorite. I found my favorite croissant here (and I’ve tasted croissants in many countries — this one is perfect). Usually, even if I really like a bakery, there are a few things that aren’t completely to my taste. But this place? Everything was absolutely delicious. You can truly taste the freshness in every single bite!
Putri Dumadi★★★★★
If you found many people line up at a hilly spot somewhere near Paris Montmartre area probably it’s mamiche! Hehe Coz they always line ups. Love the famous chocolate babka, and the beignets chocolate and vanilla. All are delicious and satisfying. It’s soft but also chewy, the sweetness levels are a bit too sweet but still okay with black coffee/ oolong tea. All the staff are amazingly kindly attentive and helpful.
blancabertely★★★★★
1000 sur 1000! Went this morning and had the best Babka EVER! Also the cookies are to die for! The bread is also delicious… recommend it 100%! Thank you for not increasing your prices despite your incredible success. You rock!!!

Mamiche is one of the best bakeries we tried. They offer a nice selection of sandwiches, French boulangerie pastries, breads, etc. Everything we had tasted good, and the service was very friendly and helpful. A queue is to be expected, but it moves quickly. Keep in mind that there is no seating — it is takeaway only. Highly recommended if you want to grab a quick, tasty bite.

If you’re in Paris and craving a true taste of Portugal, Manteigaria is an absolute must. They specialize in the famous Pastéis de Belém / Pastéis de Nata, and honestly, these were some of the best I’ve ever had outside Lisbon. The pastries are heavenly: perfectly flaky on the outside, soft and warm inside, with rich buttery layers and a silky vanilla custard filling that melts in your mouth. Every bite feels authentic and comforting. Closing your eyes for a second, it’s like being instantly transported to Lisbon — sitting in a small café with the smell of fresh pastries and coffee in the air. Truly amazing experience and a blink to the big Portuguese immigration that contributes to Paris cosmopolitan identity.
Sienna X.★★★★★
Absolutely loved this place! The pastéis de nata were amazing, honestly tasted just like the ones I had in Lisbon. Crispy outside, creamy inside, with the perfect balance of sweetness. Also a special thank you to Lise, who was incredibly warm and friendly. She even noticed there was a little leaf stuck in my hair and kindly reminded me, which was such a thoughtful gesture. 😊😊Her kindness really made the whole experience even better. Definitely one of the best pastel de nata spots I’ve tried outside Portugal. Highly recommend!
Giovanna Vicenti★★★★★
Best pastel in town. Is exactly the same of Lisbon. We also taste the new tea's flavor and its so tasty. I suggest everybody to go there of you like pasteis and if you are in paris
Collin Olson★★★★★
This is the same quality you would find in Portugal. These are amongst the finest snacks you will find anywhere in the world. We were so surprised to find one in the heart of Paris. Just be warned, if you eat one, you’ll want another. Pro tip, add cinnamon.
Princess Zabala★★★★★
Glad I stumbled upon this place while on my way to the Metro! it was really good! The guy also offered me the cute small sample of Pastéis de nata with coffee! The Texture was Perfect and also I find it creamy and delicious but not too sweet! Would Highlight recommend trying!

One of my must-dos every time back in Paris is visiting Petite Île. First to satisfy my cravings for their bakings. Second to stock up and bring some back to NL to keep me going until next time (as long as I can resist finishing everything before I get home). Might sound crazy but the moment taking that first bite, it's always more than worth it✨
Dashiel Balnaves (Tagged)★★★★☆
I had heard a fair bit about this places croissants so decided to try them. There are some very nice outdoor places to sit even in the rain and people watch. The coffee was actually very nice, but the croissant wasn’t very flaky and buttery. With the inside having a texture and taste similar to a supermarket (though still better). Overall not a bad place though and some of their other pastries still look good.
Shady★★★★★
Bakery selection is good. Tried the almond croissant and double cheese sandwich. Nice ambiance inside the cafe. Their lattes are also pretty good and they have a good selection of whole beans to buy from.
Katherine Yen★★★★★
Love their baked goods! I’ve tried their plain and their chocolate sesame croissants and both are stellar. The ambiance of the bakery is delightfully cozy, and the ladies working there were very friendly. I’m hoping to make one or two more trips back to try their other baked goods during my trip.
Katie Jordan★★★★★
The pastries at this bakery are truly outstanding. You must pay 50c extra for alternative dairy-free milks. There is almost no seating, both inside or outside. Prepare to take away unless you are happy to sit on a bench with no table, directly facing the till. Sesame pain au chocolat -> a fluffy, crisp, and golden brown pain au chocolat with a sort of sesame frangipane baked on top. There is also a layer of sesame paste in the middle with the chocolate!! The chocolate/sesame runs almost all the way through the pastry so the ratio of puff pastry to filling is perfect. The flavour is not too sweet! They have one or two vegan options, such as a vegan aubergine sandwich. The vegan aubergine sandwich had crunchy/stiff bread and a soft and oily aubergine filling. The matcha latte was not sweetened.

One of my favorite vegan boulangeries in Paris. They often have fun and rotating viennoiseries, pâtisseries, and other goodies like a croissant glacé that is one of the best things I’ve ever had. Some of my favorites over the years: the NY rolls, the brownie bûche de Noël, anything praliné rose, éclair…really you can’t go wrong!
LJ M.Herrera★★★★★
Absolutely amazing! Happy to be in a 100% vegan patisserie and everything looks fantastic! Probably next time I will have the quiche, I want to try many things!
Dani Harrell★★★★★
All vegan pastry shop, i was in heaven! The chocolate and custard pastry was incredible. We also took an eclair, some madelines, crossaints and pain au chocolates for the next few days breakfast. The eclair was INCREDIBLE, i wish i knew how to make the choux pastry! (We did order 2 eclairs but when we looked in the box later in the day there was only one, unsure if we were charged for it)
Ashley F★★★★★
Absolutely delicious vegan treats at VG patisserie. Staff was helpful. It’s was so delicious. Everything we had was good but the pink roule à la crème and eclair au cafe were the favorites between the two of us.
Bryanna Forest★★★★★
Been here several times, it's one of my favorite places in Paris! (My hands-down favorite croissant 🥐) Every pastry and cake I've tried has always been excellent, as well as the coffee, matcha, and special summer coconut matcha + coffee drinks. And the staff are super nice and willing to let you practice your French with them ☺️ Only one drawback: there is no wifi! I had read online somewhere they did have it so I was disappointed and unable to work, but at least i have the delicious pain au chocolat to keep me company.

We stopped here on a food tour our first time in Paris. We got down to our last day and I figured out on our way to Montmarte that we could stop at Etienne Marcel Metro stop and run by Storer. Last time, I got a pan chocolate and this time a chocolate eclair. The chocolate cream on the inside was buttery, chocolaty goodness. When the clerk asked me what I wanted, I wanted to say one of everything.

Excellent old-school patisserie with more than 300 years of history. I glad that I had my first Saint Honore here. Really enjoyed crisp pastry at the base, delicate choux, smooth cream and wonderful caramelised top. You should definetely try this pastry here. Selection of other traditional french pastries is impressive. The only lowlight is an absence of sitting inside and slightly high prices.

I had a really, really amazing raspberry tart here, it had a really dense thick but crispy crust, just the way I love the crust of these types of desserts. Raspberries were fresh and very delicious. The cream was dense and very well balanced. The voluptuous heartlike little jam packed jewel in the middle provided the perfect sweetness to the slight acidity of the berries. What else can I say? There’s a reason why this place still exists after all these years. Very friendly people too. As you’ll see in the images, it’s kinda pricey to be honest, can’t argue against that, but I can not say it was too overpriced for what I had, or would think this place as a tourist attraction. 10/10 would recommend.

They didn’t have Mille fille that day, macaroons were just okay but the cakes were good! The top layer of cream tasted abit like fridge but everything else was good. No ice for the cooling bag, not helpful in 40c heatwave.

It was our first time back here in 4 years, and everything was as amazing as we remembered it. Not only a beautiful little space but just such precise, delicate and unbelievably tasty pastries. Pictured is a palmier of perfection, the only thing I remembered to photograph! The last time we came, the owners invited my kids to the back for a little tour. Just a lovely place in all respects.

This place is amazing. Must go. Extremely sweet and generous workers and owners, really delicious food. The quiche with side salad was incredible. Better than I can make at home. The pastries are also delicious. Lives up to the high ratings.

Great cafe next to Notre Dame. Special thanks to Archet’s services and making nice Sunday morning coffees for me and my family to enjoy.

Friendly staff, nice pastries, quiet spot - most tourists don’t bother to walk around ND…

This was a must-stop after Notre Dame. See it on Les Frenchies Facebook group and the hype was allllllll correct. The focaccia ham sandwich was splendid and the croissant with tomato and mozzarella was wonderful. But the star of this show is definitely the sweets. The Notre Dame pomme (Apple) and the peche (peach) were excellent. So very good. Highly recommend - 12 out of 10 for sure.

Incredible, the staff explained what each item had in it and described it, they answered all of our questions politely and clearly. In a perfect location to sit and watch the city pass. Views of Notre dame 😍 Clean bathroom A lovely little kitchen for children to play Inside eating space

Staff were absolutely fantastic, we only only manage a small amount of French but they could speak English and complimented my French ^^ The desserts were incredible, if you go here you need to try either Notre Dame (apple compote with cream and cake covered in white chocolate) or the Creme Brulee cake. The creme brulee one was the best ever!!!

These desserts are so delicious! Being right outside Notre Dame, I was skeptical that this was going to be a “touristy” spot…but I was wrong. SO GOOD! Our favorite was the Madagascar (if you like passion fruit). We purchased in the morning so we could guarantee having the ones we wanted for our nightly treat. I will note that they are about 7€ each, so a little pricey…but DELICIOUS!
Andrea Proietti★★★★★
The best I've tried in 4 days in Paris. The pain au chocolat aux amandres was soft, tasty and crunchy too. The Madagascar was well balanced, delicate and so exotic with coconut, mango passion fruit. Also the one with pistachio and rasperry is really well balanced in flavour. Nothing is improvised or left to chance! Hightly recommended!

After seeing the long line outside, we knew this place had to be good and it definitely was! Unfortunately, they had already sold out of the plain croissants, so we went for a chocolate croissant instead. It turned out to be the best chocolate croissant I've ever had - light, fluffy, and with perfectly distributed chocolate. Everything else in the bakery looked delicious as well. Card payment is accepted. Definitely worth the wait!

Life changing, because croissants will never taste this good after we leave Paris. Came at 9am on a Thursday and there was no line. Bestest flaky croissants. There’s one small table with three chairs where you can sit and enjoy a quick breakfast. Wish we live in Paris so we can try everything!

What a wonderful boulangerie! the staff are always so kind and the products are the best I've ever had - and I try to go new places every time to really make a comprehensive survey 😉 The croissants, pain au chocolat, and pain aux raisins are hands down the best I've had in each category (in over a decade of coming to France as often as possible), and the staff is incredibly effiicient but also kind and patient - they work through their ever-present line of fans quickly, but you never feel rushed when it's your turn. Truly cannot say enough nice things about this fantastic place. it was funny, on my second visit this trip on a Sunday morning the entire city seemed quiet and asleep, but the line outside the boulangerie was long and active (and very quick)...and as an added bonus, it's kind of a fun puzzle trying to find it 😅
Tara Konya★★★★★
Best croissant in Paris! Perfectly flaky on the outside, buttery and tender on the inside. I’m still dreaming about this buttery goodness. Thank you, Eating Europe, for introducing us to this gem! 🥐🇫🇷
Anna★★★★☆
The baguette was slightly tough on the outside but nice and chewy on the inside. The croissant was incredibly buttery—so much so that the paper bag was actually soaked with butter! You can definitely tell they don't skimp on the butter. It might feel a bit greasy if you aren't a big fan of butter, but if you're looking for a very rich, buttery croissant, this is the spot. Also, there’s only one seat outside, so it’s best to think of it as a takeout-only shop.

Essential Tips for Your Parisian Bakery Tour

Navigating the bakery scene in Paris requires a bit of local knowledge to ensure you get the best possible experience. While the quality is generally high, understanding the terminology and etiquette will help you blend in with the locals and secure the freshest products. Here are some practical tips to elevate your pastry pilgrimage.

1). Look for “Artisan Boulanger” Signage

French law dictates that a shop can only be called a boulangerie if the dough is kneaded and baked on the premises. Look for the sign “Artisan Boulanger” on the facade. This guarantees you are not buying frozen, industrially produced bread that has simply been reheated.

2). Ask for “Tradition” not “Baguette”

When ordering, ask for a tradition (often called baguette tradition). The standard “baguette” can legally contain additives and enzymes, whereas the “tradition” is protected by law and can only contain flour, water, salt, and yeast. It is almost always superior in flavor and texture.

3). Order “Bien Cuite” if You Like Crunch

If you prefer a darker, crustier loaf with more caramelization and a nuttier flavor, ask for your bread bien cuite (well done). If you prefer a softer, paler crust, ask for pas trop cuite.

4). Do Not Squeeze the Bread

It is considered poor etiquette to squeeze loaves to test freshness. Trust the reputation of the bakery on our list and the visual cues of the crust. The bakers know what they are doing.

5). Viennoiserie is a Morning Affair

Croissants and pain au chocolat are traditionally breakfast foods. While many bakeries bake them throughout the day, the best batches are usually out by 8:00 AM. By late afternoon, the selection may be thinner, and the pastries will have lost their optimal crispness.

6). Carry a Tote Bag

Parisians rarely use plastic bags for bread. Bringing your own cloth tote bag not only helps the environment but also keeps your baguette from getting soggy by allowing air circulation. It is the most stylish way to carry your carbs.

The beauty of exploring Parisian bakeries is that the journey is just as rewarding as the destination. Each neighborhood has its own rhythm, and the scent of baking butter is often the best guide. Do not be afraid to wander into a small shop not listed here; the standard is high, and discovery is part of the charm.

Ultimately, the best bakery in Paris is the one that makes you feel connected to the city’s history. Whether you are tearing into a warm croissant on the banks of the Seine or saving a sourdough loaf for a picnic under the Eiffel Tower, these baked goods are the connective tissue of Parisian life. Savor every bite.
