Biarritz may be famous for its surf breaks and imperial grandeur, but its culinary scene has a softer, flour-dusted underbelly that deserves just as much attention. Tucked between the Art Deco casinos and the crashing waves of the Grand Plage is a vibrant community of artisans dedicated to the art of French baking. Whether you are looking for a flaky, buttery croissant to start your day or a crusty baguette to accompany a seaside picnic, this Basque coastal town delivers.
The local bakeries here are heavily influenced by the surrounding Pays Basque region, meaning you will find a unique blend of classic French patisserie and rustic, regional specialties. From the famous Basque cake—a golden, crumbly tart often filled with black cherry jam or pastry cream—to the crusty corn flour breads of the south, the variety is staggering. Exploring these shops offers a delicious insight into the local culture that goes beyond the standard tourist trail.
Quality is paramount in Biarritz. The best establishments take pride in using high-grade French flour, slow fermentation processes, and locally sourced butter. Because the town is relatively compact, you can easily walk between the historic port and the city center, sampling your way through a curated selection of the finest doughs and pastries the Atlantic coast has to offer. It is a sensory experience defined by the aroma of caramelizing sugar and toasted wheat.
However, with so many options lining the streets, finding the absolute best can be overwhelming for a visitor. You might walk past a nondescript storefront without realizing it houses the best sourdough in the region, or you might queue up at a tourist trap that serves frozen dough. Knowing where the locals line up on a Sunday morning is the key to a truly authentic gastronomic experience.
To help you navigate this delicious landscape, we have compiled a list of the most exceptional addresses in the city. We have considered factors such as the quality of ingredients, the mastery of technique, the creativity of the pastry chefs, and the consistency of their output. Each entry offers something unique, ensuring that whether you are a strict traditionalist or an adventurous foodie, you will find your perfect match.
Here are the standout establishments currently defining the bakery scene in Biarritz.

Discovered this magnificent place yesterday morning, and went back again this morning. The staff was amazing, welcoming, friendly, tried to help in every possible way, and helped me even with my poor French. We had, a croissant, pain au chocolat, and a raisin pastry with a wonderful cream in its swirls, two lattes for 10.90€. Worth every single cent. If you find yourself in Biarritz it is a wonderful place to have breakfast and not only as they have salty as well not just the sweets. Baguettes and breads in general. Try to believe.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting a charming bakery in Biarritz, and it was an absolutely delightful experience. The cozy atmosphere and the enticing aroma of freshly baked pastries made it an inviting spot to relax and enjoy some treats.
I ordered a latte and a pastry, and both were exceptional. pastry was a flaky, golden delight with just the right amount of sweetness and a delightful crunch that left me wanting more.
The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making me feel welcome from the moment I walked in.
If you’re ever in Biarritz, I highly recommend stopping by this bakery. It’s a great place to enjoy high-quality pastries and coffee, and the warm, inviting atmosphere is perfect for a leisurely morning or an afternoon treat. Five stars!

Wow, so very good and traditional!

Actually this was the most friendly and polite place we have been in Biarritz. We were treated better than in the expensive patisseries. Very polite employees. Furthermore food and coffee are great and at a fair price.

Lovely bakery in Biarritz! The cookies are absolutely delicious, and the almond-chocolate bun is simply amazing — soft, flavorful, and melts in your mouth. The tartlets are a real treat as well, fresh and perfectly balanced)

I had a nice flan there, coffee was standard out of an automatic machine but did the trick. Has a small bar with 3 seats to eat there

Our favorite patisserie! We had the lemon tart for dessert at a restaurant the night before and then came here and loved everything! Their pain au raisin was exceptional and unique. More tall and crispy with doughy center and plentiful raisins! Cute little seating outside also and plenty of room to dine inside.
Bo San Cheung★☆☆☆☆
❌❌❌ I’ve tasted a lot of pain au chocolat (from too much butter, to not enough) and I got fooled by the photos. I should have read the other comments!
“Don’t judge a book by its cover” in this case the cover is better than the story.
Pastries looked AMAZING. However, the pain au chocolat was more like a bread with layers. You can tell by the thickness and layers I’ve tried to demonstrate via photos.
We also took two savoury items, 2 cakes, viennoiseries, a feuilleté tart and a brioche — expensive, tasteless and pointless… waste of money.
Cakes are an absolute joke, and no flavour. And never in my life have I seen just a tart with a giant dome of cream / meringue on top. Just looks good for the eyes 🙄
Coffee, they use generic illy. If they preach artisanal, how about serving real coffee from locally roasted coffee beans?
Lastly — There was only one employee taking orders who was also the waitress, she did a great job under pressure. But, I’d recommend hiring people… I’m sure they’re making enough money off these very expensive, tasteless pastries. ❌
Cristina G.★★★★★
Did eat in once and other time did take away and when we arrived home it was still so yummy. Loved the croissant, but forever a pain au chocolat girl and I have to say that it was incredibly good. Also don’t sleep on the other pastries, there’s a little one with blueberries that we also loved
Laura Justis★★★★★
Delicious!! Incredible pastry selection and incredible croissants!! Devine in flavor and shape and fluffiness. Espresso was good too. Would eat breakfast here every morning if I could. I would take 40 of these home to New York if I could. So so so so SO good
San San Tso★☆☆☆☆
Didn’t taste good at all. Only looked good.
I’m sorry to say this but the effort you made on the interior should have made in the food.
Croissant was not crushy and cappuccino had bland coffee taste

An excellent bakery where everything looks tempting! The bread is crusty and keeps very well, the pastries are made with all-butter butter just the way we like them, and the cakes are as beautiful as they are delicious. Special mention for the always friendly and welcoming service!

A wonderful discovery at Les Douceurs du Braou. This bakery offers high-quality, handcrafted products with meticulous attention to detail in its pastries and viennoiseries. The welcome is warm and the simple, inviting atmosphere makes you want to return.
Special mention goes to the pain au chocolat, which are excellent: perfectly risen puff pastry, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a perfect balance of butter and chocolate. You can taste the craftsmanship and the freshness of the product.
The entire display is very appealing, with beautifully presented products and recipes that make you want to try everything. A great place in Anglet for a sweet treat or to start the day with a quality pastry.

Fantastic find! Honestly, it's the best vegetarian wrap I've ever eaten! A true culinary delight, thank you for that 😇
Yannick Larroudé★☆☆☆☆
No pastries on a Saturday morning at 9:40. It can happen occasionally, but it's not the first time.
The waitress apologized and offered me mini pastries, but paying almost as much for something I'll just gobble down in one bite doesn't interest me.
It's not the first time I've stopped by and left empty-handed. The same goes for the bread; more than once I've left without it because they don't have a classic baguette, only specialty breads.
It's a shame because the products are very good, but when you come looking for something you can't find, several times, well, you don't come back...

Really lovely place for our breakfast. Such a shame wasn’t in town over the weekend so couldn’t try the chocolate baguette. Good variety of options and well priced.
Banana cake was good but a bit dry.

Excellent customer service. Good variety of breads, pastries and delicious sandwiches. Not too far from Halles de Biarritz. The scent of a nice bread attracted me to venture in. Price is reasonable.

Okindegia Gambetta l is a charming spot in France 🥖 known for its artisan breads and exceptional pastries 🥐. The sourdough is perfectly crusty, and the buttery croissants are a standout. Outstanding pastry shop. Chemin de fer pastry (the one with pistachio) was superb - great pistachio taste and soft/moist in the middle while crunchy at the sides. It’s a must if you are in Biarritz. They are also selling macarons without any filling which were also nice but nothing special from my perspective. Overall, I highly recommend this place - the selection is amazing, it looks beautifully inside and the staff is friendly and welcoming

Tried the chocolate chip gateau and a macaroon cookie. The chocolate chip gateau was soft and fresh, but flavor wise nothing special. I don’t think I’d get it again. The macaroon cookie however was very good and unlike what I thought it would be.

I really don't have a sweet tooth but trying the basque cake was a nice surprise. Amazing texture and flavour. I didn't find it over whelmingly sweet. For me the chocolate filled cake was the best.

I didn't like my interaction with the staff, it seemed like It felt as if I was bothering them for ordering pastries to go. When it came time to pay I wasn't given my receipt, it was placed on the counter. Maybe that's how they do it at this location but all other pastry shop I've visited handed me what I purchased... It felt like "here take your stuff and get out".
The croissant and chocolatine are not bad at all. Just a shame the welcome wasn't as good as the food.

Not bad, but nothing special. Retro decor, a bit dusty. Feels like style over substance.
Ciaociao k★★★☆☆
A charming, retro-style pâtisserie and café with a cute atmosphere. I picked up their Mont Blanc cake along with some jam. The café’s window seats offer a nice view of the town.
Unfortunately, the Mont Blanc wasn’t to my taste—the inside was meringue, which I found disappointing, and it also tasted like it had been sitting for a while. The prices aren’t exactly cheap, either.
but staff was very friendly and kindly.
Anton★★★★☆
Overall, it was a great place to visit. The food is great and quite reasonably priced and the view from the terrace is fantastic. However, what makes me leave 4 stars is the service. The waiters were unenthusiastic and looked like they’d rather be anywhere but here. I have also forgotten a water bottle, called them to confirm it’s there. Came back this morning to get a rude “no” and zero effort from the man who was working

Amazing bakery in Biarritz. We bought baguette and pastries here almost every day during our recent holiday. Especially loved the Baguette “Gourmandine” which was incredibly soft and fluffy inside, almost flaky, unlike a typical quite dense baguette, and a crust with just the right touch of crispness. Also loved the Tarte fine pomme, the Flan and everything we tried!

New owners now have had the place completely overhauled for a new layout and design that is slightly less homely than before. I feel like the recipes and staff has also changed for the worse unfortunately. Overall still a solid French bakery but the essense that I once knew from visiting this place for 30 years has all but vanished.
Every year I see the same few staff members serving and somehow every year they seem to forget I was ever there, which is a shame, I grew up with a connection to this place. I now just take a few steps more and go to the bakery just a bit further into the square.
The baguettes are half the size they once were, not as thick, not as long, but still decent. The selections has dropped as if their bakers dropped out. What they serve is good but a shadow of their former self. Best of luck to the new owners.

Essential Tips for Enjoying Bakeries in Biarritz
Navigating the bakery culture in France comes with its own set of unwritten rules and local nuances, and Biarritz is no exception. To ensure you get the freshest products and the best service, it helps to understand how the rhythm of the local day works. A little preparation can mean the difference between a soggy, mass-produced pastry and a warm, artisan masterpiece.
- Go Early or Mid-Morning: The best bakeries bake in small batches and often sell out of signature items like the croissant aux amandes or specialized sourdough loaves by noon. Aim to visit between 8:00 AM and 10:30 AM for the widest selection and bread that is still warm from the oven.
- Don’t Call It a "Pain au Chocolat": While technically understood, in the South West of France, this beloved pastry is traditionally called a chocolatine. Ordering it the local way will earn you a smile of approval from the boulanger.
- Bring Cash for Small Purchases: While most modern bakeries accept credit cards, many have a minimum spend (often €5 or €10). If you are just grabbing a single baguette or a quick pastry, having a few coins or a small bill is faster and appreciated.
- Try the "Tradition": When buying a baguette, always opt for the baguette de tradition if available. By French law, this label guarantees the bread is made on-site with only flour, water, salt, and yeast—no additives or frozen dough allowed.
- Embrace the Basque Cake: Many visitors stick to what they know, like éclairs or macarons. While these are excellent, you are in the Basque Country. Ask for a slice of Gâteau Basque; if the bakery specializes in it, you are in for a regional treat you won’t easily find replicated elsewhere.
- Respect the Bread Etiquette: Never place your baguette upside down, as local superstition suggests it brings bad luck. Additionally, if you are buying a loaf to eat with dinner, ask for it "bien cuite" (well done) if you like a darker, crustier exterior.
Exploring Biarritz through its bakeries is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the town’s daily rhythm. It connects you to the agricultural traditions of the Pyrenees and the culinary rigor of French artisanship. Whether you are grabbing a quick espresso and a croissant before hitting the waves, or carefully selecting a dessert for a sunset dinner, these bakeries offer a taste of the region’s soul.
As you wander from the Halles de Biarritz to the lighthouse, let the scent of butter and sugar guide you. Take the time to chat with the bakers, ask about their flour, and try something you have never heard of before. In a world of fast food, these establishments remain a testament to patience, craft, and the simple joy of breaking bread.
