Nestled among half-timbered houses and quiet canals, Colmar feels like a living postcard from the Alsace wine route. But beyond its fairy-tale facades, the town holds a deeply rooted culinary identity shaped by both French finesse and Germanic tradition. For travelers, choosing where to eat here is not just about convenience; it is a way to understand the regionβs history, agriculture, and pride.
From rustic winstubs serving slow-braised pork cheeks to Michelin-starred tables reinterpreting local produce, Colmar offers a surprisingly diverse dining scene for a town of its size. The aromas of tarte flambΓ©e, melted Munster cheese, and freshly baked kougelhopf drift from cobblestone alleys and market squares. Yet, navigating the options requires more than following your nose.
Many restaurants cater heavily to tourists, especially around Petite Venise and the Cathedral quarter. While some of these spots are excellent, others trade authenticity for turnover. Knowing where locals go, where chefs source from nearby farms, and which rooms deliver genuine hospitality can transform a simple meal into a memorable journey.
Seasonality matters enormously in Alsatian cooking. Spring brings white asparagus and morel mushrooms; autumn delivers game, wild berries, and the first hearty choucroute garnie. The best kitchens adjust their menus constantly, often listing daily specials on chalkboards in French and Alsatian dialect. Understanding this rhythm helps you order with confidence and avoid generic, freezer-driven plates.
Wine pairing is equally important. Colmar sits at the crossroads of some of Franceβs most aromatic white wine vineyards, including Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris. A knowledgeable sommelier or owner will guide you toward a glass that elevates your dish, whether it is a crisp Sylvaner with river fish or a late-harvest Gewurztraminer with Munster cheese.
Below is a curated selection of the best restaurants in Colmar, chosen for consistency, ingredient quality, and a genuine sense of place. Each entry reflects a balance between tradition and contemporary expectation, ensuring you leave with both a full stomach and a deeper appreciation for Alsace.

Must visit when you are in Colmar. The flammkuchen is amazing, I had the strudel version one night and the original the next day for lunch. I did not reserve a space but it is a busy little spot. The hostess lady is one of the best for two reasons. One she remembered my drink order from the night before and secondly her interaction with guests especially speaking to Japanese tourists in their own language and seeing their amazed reactions was great to see. Definitely will be back next time in Colmar.

Tried Flambe for the first time here. We stayed 2 nights in Colmar and came for dinner each day π the food is great and the restaurant was always 90% full! Don't be fooled by the tickness of the flambe! Even if thin, it is very consistent! We bought 1 per person and it was great!
The personal are also extremely nice and welcoming!
Highly recommend!

Make reservations here! It is a very small place with an unassuming exterior (no tables lining the street, etc) but seems it is always full - we went in the evening and had to reserve for the next day. Weβre here in June and they have two dinner seatings - at 7 and 9pm. They only have tartes flambΓ©es on their menu and it was the best Iβve had in Alcase! Favorite - the βBasilicβ!

If you are looking for a Tarte Flambee then this is the place you need to try. Reservations are almost required because this location gets booked up in advance almost every night. It is small but the staff is friendly and the food and drinks are delicious! Worth the trip!

Looking for a flamkuchen ? look no more, you found the place to be.
If you like a bite in a not overpriced, overhyped place, go here, the owner is very friendly and better yet the flamkuchen is pretty amazing. And the beer is cold too!
Tip of the day, we saw two people ordering one at a time and share β¦ looked like a great idea instead of ordering two if you are with someone. We found out too late, but next time we will go for the βshare kuchenβ as well!

A restaurant experience I will remember for years!
My husband and I celebrated our 8-year anniversary at this restaurant. Start to finish, everything was simply incredible.
The flavors and dishes were incredibly creative--and each plate was a culinary experience of the highest caliber that delighted the senses.
Never before have I had cod with a savory, umami-packed sauce with morel mushrooms. It was a complete surprise but Chef Lucas pulled the unlikely ingredients together flawlessly for an unforgettable experience.
The pigeon with lardons and cabbage was also simply amazing and the dessert was a decadent delight of strawberry and pistachio flavours.
I must note that it is usually difficult to have a real gastronomic experience with food allergies and food sensitivities, especially with my intolerance to eggs and gluten, and yet Chef Lucas was able to adapt each dish expertly.
And of course, I cannot end this review without mentioning the warm and generous welcome and service that we received. Everyone was incredibly attentive and went above and beyond to make our last night in Colmar and our anniversary extra special.
Thank you to the entire team at Lucas & Chris! We will recommend your restaurant to everyone we know and we will surely be back the next time we're in Colmar.

We visited the restaurant for lunch with a reservation. We chose it because we had seen bone marrow on the menu on Google Maps. Although it was not listed on the restaurantβs menu, we asked about it and it was prepared for us.
Even though the waitress spoke French and we spoke English, communication was smooth and clear. The food was very tasty, and the wine and water were served promptly. We especially appreciated the friendly and welcoming service.

We visited Lucas & Chris expecting a refined dining experience. The presentation was pleasant, the ingredients seemed to be of very good quality, and we appreciated the effort and friendliness of the team. However, some dishes lacked depth of flavor, and the overall experience did not fully match the restaurantβs positioning. The octopus was rubbery, and when ordering the beef, we were not asked for our preferred level of doneness. Service was courteous, though somewhat slow.We believe the restaurant has strong potential, and with a few improvements in execution, the dining experience could be betterβ¨

My wife and I had our last meal in Colmar here. It was the perfect way to finish an amazing stay. The food was tremendous - extremely high quality and filling. The wine list was fantastic too. Service was so good, each and every server was helpful and you could tell by the amount of locals there that the restaurant was held in high regard. Definitely recommended.

The dinner at LβArpΓ¨ge was, by a wide margin, the worst dining experience I have had in the last few years. Across the board, the food quality, service, and interior decoration were remarkably lacking, falling far below the standard expected of a restaurant in a city known for its great cuisine, like Colmar.
Culinary Failures:
The most significant issues were with the dishes, which displayed multiple basic flaws:
The bread served was doughy and had a strikingly sour, unpleasant aftertaste.
Starter - Pomponnette: The flavors in this dishβcrab meat surrounded by smoked salmon, sweet mustard, curry sauce, and herring roeβwere profoundly unbalanced. Both the salmon and crab meat had an unpleasant bitter note, and the accompanying sauce was surprisingly bland. We were unable to finish the dish. The roasted walnuts on our other starter did not taste fresh.
I noted with confusion that diners at an opposite table were constantly salting their food, a concern I quickly understood upon tasting our own dishes.
Main Course - Black Hen of Moselle: This dish lacked the sophistication one would expect. The meat itself was not juicy, and the promised foie gras flakes were not noticeable. Most striking was the overpowering and persistent aroma of the accompanying mushrooms, which stayed uncomfortably long in the mouth and raised questions about its preparation.
Unattentive Service:
The service was inattentive, hectic, and generally failed to meet minimum expectations. There was a distinct lack of engagement, including the critical failure of the staff to explain the dishes when served.
A specific lack of professionalism was observed when the waiter cleared our unfinished Pomponnette starter, making no remark and asking no question about the significant amount of food left on the plate. Separately, staff began cleaning a nearby table and then abruptly stopped, leaving a cleaning cloth as inappropriate "decoration" on the table.
Interior and Atmosphere:
The interior design was jarring and haphazard, lacking any sense of charming or quirky curation. The objectsβsuch as plaster Madonnas positioned next to wine bottles and golden hedgehogsβappeared to be an arbitrary collection of discarded items placed onto the restaurant's shelves. This random and unappealing dΓ©cor contributed to a deeply disappointing overall atmosphere.

Outstanding from the moment we sat down! Such a beautiful restaurant! We made a reservation 3 weeks in advance from Canada and Iβm glad we did. We requested outdoor seating and it was lovely! The staff was very friendly and explained the menu perfectly! We had the Menu du Jour entrΓ©e,plat and dessert.
I choose the vegetarian option and my husband chose the fish option but with the vegetarian soup. The presentation and taste was outstanding for every dish and an amazing presentation!! One of our favourite meals of the trip! We can see why it is rated so highly! There is a lot of thought and passion involved in their food!
Thank you from Canada! We enjoyed our experience very much! The price is incredible for what you get!

Found this restaurant by chance, and it did not disappoint. Food was amazing. Since we hardly spoke any french the owner has been attending us who has been an absolute gem! Got amazing wine pairings, dessert recommendations and lot of laughter. Best Caesar salad and desserts. Since it was a full night it took longer for the food to arrive but that was fine since the good atmosphere also brings in amazing people to chat with.

A traditional Alsatian restaurant in the "Petite Venise" district of Colmar. The restaurant's location is excellent, and the atmosphere is pleasant.

The ambience and views here are amazing if you can get a table on the outside. I'd highly recommend you book a table online for an early sitting as this place is very popular among tourists. For reference, we booked for 6:45 on a Saturday and got one of the last exterior seats overlooking the canal.
The staff were very professional, efficient, and friendly. Unlike other French restaurants, their level of service is much more in-line with what you'd expect at a North American establishment. We noticed they revisited the table very frequently to check-in with guests (how is everything etc...). Food and drinks were served very quickly as well.
The food itself was solid in my opinion. The terrine seemed to be homemade and reminded me of a North American meatloaf. The pickled vegetables were a nice addition to balance out the savory and fatty terrine. The pork knuckle was very savoury with a strong wine aftertaste. The chicken dish was very creamy with a strong wine aftertaste as well. The mashed potatoes were very tender and creamy with good texture from the browned exteriors.
Overall, the food was solid. I'll admit I had a more balanced pork knuckle elsewhere. The menu clearly states there is wine within both dishes, but I would suggest diners who dislike the flavor of alcohol within their food to choose carefully from the menu.
There is only one toilet/washroom for the entire restaurant. It's very spacious and clean however.

We had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. The food was excellent β the pork knuckle was outstanding, and the salad was fresh and perfectly prepared. The wine and beer selection were also very good and complemented the meal nicely.

Incredibly fresh ingredients and dishes that burst with finesse and flavour without being fussy. The tasting menu and wine pairing is fantastic value for money. I have travelled the world extensively over 40 years. I ate at all restaurants ranging from pop & momβs to Michelin three stars. This is my honest review of the restaurant Quai 21 in Colmar, Alsace, France.
A pleasant restaurant nicely located along the river, close to the Ferris wheel and the Christmas market area.
The restaurant is situated on the pier, near the Grande Roue, in an area that is usually very lively during the Christmas market season. Inside, the dΓ©cor is modern and well kept, with two separate dining rooms, which helps create a comfortable setting for dinner.
The cuisine is carefully prepared, though not particularly outstanding. We especially enjoyed the main courses, both fish-based: wild barbel and Arctic char. Both dishes were flavorful, well cooked, and enjoyable, even if they did not leave a lasting impression.
Service was very friendly and efficient.
Overall, a solid option in a very attractive location β suitable for a pleasant meal while enjoying the surroundings, without expecting a truly memorable culinary experience.

We came here because of the good reviews hoping to taste delicious Alsatian food. Unfortunately, the pork cheeks had so much salt that I couldnβt even finish them and had to drink tons of water. When I told about it to our waiter, I didnβt even get an apology. The pork steak was dry, so 26 euros for it seemed like a rip off. Really amazing truffle infused foods! We got the charcuterie, beef cut with baby potatoes, and croquettes. Amazing meats! The truffle wasnβt too over powering on any of them. The croquettes were also amazing and Iβd have them again easily.
The server wears super quick, and the bartender was really friendly and gave us some suggestions on places to go visit around Colmar.
Really great meal!

How do you stand out from the competitionβ¦being unique. This restaurant has done an excellent job of being outstanding.
At first, it looked like an ordinary Italian restaurant with pasta, ham, cheese and wine.
When deep dived, the menu was simple but well thought out, the specialties were truffles. Even simple dish like scramble eggs were delicious with excellent flavor of truffle. Needless to say, pasta was great with well balanced spices and aroma.
The kitchen was semi-opened, totally admired the only one chef who managed to deliver such amazing dishes.
Service was great with smile and willingness to explain. It was busy and you can still feel that they were happy to serve.
Definitely will go again for next trip!!!
Well done, team!

I was very positivley surprised in a rare amount. The menu is limited and all dishes have some sort of truffles. I personally dont b.other with that but I cant express how good my burger was. It was the menu uf the day, a burger with briosh bun and pulled meat and carrots. But I have no idea what they did but it has been the best burger experience I had in a while. Hope all of their menus are that delicious.

If you are in Colmar and you want to have Flammkuchen for dinner, don't look further, this is the best place for Flammkuchen. They have lots of varieties and they are authentic. The waiters are professional and they looked after us nicely. The price is very good for the value of food you get and considering you are in the heart of the city centre. Recommended.

Two visits in a week when there are a multitude of places to eat in Colmar is sufficient to say we loved La Stub.
This is a family run restaurant and that is clearly visible in the quality of the service: relaxed, helpful, friendly and smiley staff
Then there were the tarte flambeeβs. We tried 4 different ones. The one as good as the other. The only way is to go and experience it yourself

First time eating flammekueche.
Had one with ham and wild garlic and one with Szechuan pepper and the usual which is cheese, cured ham with cream cooked on a very thin βpizza likeβ base.
The bases were very well cooked with a slight bit of darkness which enhanced the taste of the dishes
We preferred the taste of the one without the peppers, not the pepper one was bad in any way.
In actual fact the food was so good we immediately made a second booking.
Staff were very helpful and friendly, even though there was a language barrier.
If you are in Colmar, give La Stub a go. Hopefully your experience is a similarly good one

This restaurant was a highlight of my trip.
French cuisine can look a bit intimidating to foreigners, due to the ingredients that are used, but those who dare to give it a shot are in the right place here.
Atmosphere is great, staff is very friendly, even if you french is a bit lacking.
We got a complimentary entrΓ©e which set the tone for the rest to come, all things wonderfully prepared in a balanced way. Every single ingredient was complimentary to the others on the plate, without every becoming boring.
I had the bone marrow on fresh bread as an appetizer, which was a first for me. It was fatty, juicy and had tons of flavour. It was fun to try to scoop out every last bit of deliciousness, though I was drenched in fat after the ordeal haha.
My friend had asparagus with different vegetables, like caramelized carrots and a poached egg. Plate was nicely decorated and had many different things to try, all prepared in a way to get the best out of it.
As a main course I had a pasta with Morello mushrooms and beef's kidneys. It was great, and a good entry into trying organ meats, since the taste was not overbearing like liver. The jus (gravy) had a lot of depth of flavour as well.
Same for my friend's meat. All delicately made into perfection.
If you're in Colmar, definitely stop by here. You may need to make a reservation since it was packed and we had to wait for a bit.
We spend about β¬50 per person for this wonderful experience, worth it!

I first dined at this restaurant in 2018 with a friend when I visited the town. Ever since then, Iβve always thought about coming back whenever I return. In 2023, I finally managed to revisit the restaurant. Fortunately, we made a reservation a week in advance, as itβs quite popular and often fully booked.
Let the pictures speak for themselves β this place is truly a hidden gem. I noticed that we were the only non-French guests, which I take as a good sign. It doesnβt bother me at all that the staff speak little English; what matters most is that their food and service never disappoint. Iβll definitely be coming back again soon.
Update (2025):
I returned again in 2025. The quality remains top-notch, though itβs a pity they no longer list the menu prices for dinner. Still, the food is absolutely brilliant.π€©

If visiting colmar, this place is a must. Plenty of food for each meal, but quality on point too. The atmosphere outside is very cool by terrace. Seems a nice place for winter too. Very well attended by the waiters. We were very impressed by the restaurant and definitely would come back if I visit colmar again.

Located in the center of historic Colmar. Three level building with seatings at 3 levels. It was early April when we came so outside was not available. Outside seating would be lovely.
Food was ok. We ordered 4 mains. 3 were meh but the pork knuckle was really good with the honey sauce.
Service was professional. We came at a busy time and it was clear that there was only one server helping the entire floor. But we enjoyed sitting in this historical building and looking out of the window while we waited.

Place was packed yet the staff was welcoming and prompt to find a table for our group. Willing to explain the menu offerings. Food quality and portions are good. Visited on a Sunday around 8pm.

While walking in the old town you come across this nice cafe with a terrace along the river. They have a good selection of small bites including cakes, bruschetta and ice creams and waffles.
They have a staffs are attentive and fast.
The location is great for its view of the city and river.
Price is not an issue here. Overall worthy of trying.

Such a cute place with tasty food!
The view from the terrace is stunning. Food really good.
Note that they only serve meals (flammkuchen) until 14:00, afterward only appetizers and desserts.
Additionally, no reservation is possible, so you might have to wait for a table when it is busy (definitely in high season).

Food and service was great! Very nice restaurant with outdoor seating right by the water and one small bathroom.
The only issue was the five bees that kept coming to our table and food that made it very hard to eat. Otherwise, food was tasty and simple.

Amazing restaurant.
Lovely ambiance to the dining area. The opening hours are ridiculously narrow, so plan accordingly .
The restaurant has a fixed menu and similar fixed wine options β¦ so if you like al la cart dining this is not for you β¦ move on with no regrets. If you do want to enjoy a chef and sommelier doing what they believe in, then these guys are well worth visiting.
To be honest this is an extraordinary good restaurant and should be visited if you want to taste amazing food

Practical Tips for Dining in Colmar
A little preparation goes a long way in a town where the best tables are small, beloved, and often booked days in advance. These practical recommendations will help you avoid common tourist pitfalls, eat at the right hours, and discover flavors that many visitors miss. Use them as a guide rather than a strict script, and always allow room for spontaneous discoveries.
First, reserve ahead for dinner, especially from Thursday through Saturday. Many top addresses have fewer than thirty seats, and locals take their evening meals seriously. A quick phone call or online booking made one or two days before your visit is usually enough. If you are traveling in December for the Christmas markets, book at least a week in advance.
Second, embrace the winstub culture. These cozy, wood-paneled taverns are the heart of Alsatian dining, serving generous portions of regional classics in a relaxed atmosphere. Do not expect elaborate plating or quiet fine dining; instead, expect communal tables, hearty stews, and honest prices. Ordering a carafe of local Edelzwicker or Pinot Blanc keeps the meal authentic and affordable.
Third, learn a few Alsatian menu terms before you go. Words like baeckeoffe, fleischnacka, spΓ€tzle, and tarte flambΓ©e appear on menus more often than their French translations. Knowing that βgrumbereβ means potato or that βsΓΌrkrΓΌtβ is sauerkraut helps you navigate menus quickly and order with confidence. Most servers appreciate any effort to engage with the local language.
Fourth, time your meals with local rhythm. Lunch service often runs from noon to 2:00 p.m., while dinner rarely starts before 7:00 p.m. If you arrive hungry at 6:00 p.m., you will find most kitchens closed. Use that gap to enjoy a glass of CrΓ©mant dβAlsace at a wine bar or to stroll through Little Venice as the evening light softens.
Fifth, ask about the daily special rather than defaulting to the permanent menu. In Colmarβs better kitchens, the chalkboard list reflects what the chef found at the market that morning. It is often the freshest, most interesting dish in the house, and it changes with the seasons. Trust it over a laminated menu that has not changed in years.
Finally, do not overlook the simpler addresses. A humble bakery selling onion tart, a butcher offering warm cervelas in a crusty roll, or a fromager assembling a plate of local cheeses can deliver as much pleasure as a formal restaurant. Some of Colmarβs most memorable meals happen standing at a counter or sitting on a bench by the canal.
Colmar rewards curious eaters who look beyond the postcard views and tourist menus. Whether you are savoring a slow-cooked baeckeoffe in a candlelit cellar or sharing a crisp tarte flambΓ©e with friends, the townβs culinary soul reveals itself through patience, local knowledge, and a willingness to taste the regionβs contrasts.
Plan your meals around the rhythm of the day, ask questions, and let the seasons guide your choices. In doing so, you will experience Colmar not just as a beautiful stop on the Alsace wine route, but as a living gastronomic destination with stories simmering in every pot.
