Tours may be known as the gateway to the Loire Valley’s grand châteaux, but its culinary scene has a personality all its own. While the city certainly hosts its share of high-end gastronomic temples, the true heart of Tours beats in its bistros, brasseries, and hidden side-street kitchens.
Eating well here does not require a royal budget. The local dining culture thrives on hearty, traditional French cooking that values generous portions and rich sauces over pretentious presentation.
For students, travelers, and locals alike, finding a delicious meal at a reasonable price is not just a possibility—it is a way of life. The city is dense with options that offer the famous "formule" (set menu) for lunch, allowing you to taste authentic Touraine cuisine without breaking the bank.
This guide focuses on the spots where value meets flavor. From traditional rillettes and river fish to modern fusion and wood-fired pizzas, we have scoured the streets of Vieux Tours and beyond to find the best plates for the lowest prices.
Whether you are looking for a quick crêpe between museum visits or a cozy dinner of beef bourguignon, this list has you covered. Prepare to eat well, spend little, and experience the true taste of the Loire Valley.

The confit canard was absolutely delicious—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, a true classic done to perfection. The crème brûlée was equally outstanding—smooth, rich, and with a perfect balance of sweetness and caramelized sugar on top.
Though most of the staff spoke French, we managed to get by without any issues, which only added to the charm of the place. The atmosphere was vibrant and full of locals, making it feel authentic and welcoming. It's clear that this spot is loved by those in the know, and the traditional French dishes lived up to every expectation.
Highly recommend it for anyone looking for a true taste of France in a lively, bustling setting when in Tours.

We had a great experience. As Americans and Italians speaking little French, we were welcomed. This place is LEGIT French. For real French food, for real French people. Loved the starters, loved the dinner plates, the wine, and desserts. Very filling, wintery dishes. Lots of food for the money. The goat cheese radish appetizer was the best! Snails were tasty. Salmon and veal dinners were the best. Maybe too much mixed foods on each plate was the only turn off. We had a great time though and highly recommend.

If you're looking for a delicious and not too expensive meal, this is the place to be. Starters, main, desert and a great selection of local wine, really really good.
In addition, the staff is really nice and very efficient.
Definitely worth coming 2 nights in a row !

The food was not nice, fries were cold and soggy meat on my familys plate was tepid and not reheated properly, my steak tatare came in a pink Mayonnaise type sauce! It was not stake tatare!!.... overall, not worth the money or the calories! Most other people were leaving food on their plates as well. We will not be going back.

It is a very nice place run by father and son, being so very kind. The food was truly great! Very good value for money for 'the menu du moment' at 1.30 pm. Not cramped in by tourists. We had a lovely time! Thank you.

We went there after reading all the positive comments. So our expectations were high and we had come from the next town over to try it out! maybe it was a bad day for us but I don’t understand the hype .We took three lunch menues. It wasn’t good.
The starter was okay, avocado mush with sea food. The burger was really good, the seafood mix was okay and the portion was plentiful, I took the goulash which came in half the portion of the seafood mix, it was burnt and watery so I only ate half of it, I got the last remains of the pot. I mentioned to the staff that it was burnt, she acted surprised then carried on her business. Desert was below average especially when you compare it with the cafes and pastry shops in the town. We ate because we were famished and cold but it wasn’t deserving of such high praise, It’s a nice enough place but based on our experience doesn’t deserve all the hype. With every bite I was hoping it would get better but it didn’t.
the restaurant itself isn’t cosy, it’s small and the decor neither here or there, drink wise stay away from the organic wine.

Our first time in Tours, simple and cozy restaurant, friendly and warm welcoming, service was excellent and staff was super friendly, smiley and fun. Food was great we took a formula and we have enjoyed it. I recommend this place to everyone coming to Tours and looking for nice homemade food (especially desserts). I would return back to this restaurant when i visit tour again. Toilet was so clean which is a plus for me. Note: they are dog friendly and they got my dog water two times. My dog looks scary but she’s super friendly, even other guests played with my dog.

We had an absolutely delightful dinner at Chez Madie. The service was very friendly, helpful, and professional. The draft beer selection was good. The lambic was delicious. The steak was tender and delicious. The eggplant was very tasty. The perfectly prepared fritters were crunchy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. The desserts were sweet delights. The ambiance was fantastic. The dining room was very nicely decorated, and the acoustics were great for a pleasant dinner conversation. Great people, great food, and great location.

Waited over half an hour just to have someone take our order, the place wasn't busy at all (us and one other couple sat outside). Staff sat outside eating on the table behind us, while we were clearly waiting to order (same staff sat us down). Had to ask them if we could place our order and felt like we were bothering them (I understand they have to have a break but others had been seated after us and had been served straight away). When our galettes came mine tasted strongly of plastic, it had a really unpleasant flavour and I couldn't finish it. Not a great experience.

A little restaurant near the busy plaza. We were seated inside underground. Even though we couldn't speak French, the staff was still super helpful. The food was amazing, one of our favourite meals during our trip. The chicken and fish was amazing and the starter was great too. Would highly recommend
Julian Voynov★★☆☆☆
This restaurant definitely does not deserve to be one with the best rating (4.7/5.0). I do not know how this rating is received (I have suspicions) but it appears to be truly artificial.
The restaurant is at good place, at the corner of the main square of the old city but they do not have even a menu, neither on paper, nor with QR code. The only menu is in French and it is written on a black board in front of the restaurant which cannot be seen from the inside. When the hostess came she just turned the black board toward the table in order we to choose. However, as I mentioned it was only in French and difficult to be read.
The most important issue is that the dishes were not well prepared. The meat was very difficult to cut and eat due to the fact that it was served in very deep dishes (for soup) which were impropriate to use a knife. It is the same as to try to cut a meat in a vase. It is difficult, is not it?
The organization of the service is also completely impropriate. Instead to pay attention and present the menu immediately after somebody is sited, the hostess chooses to complete the order of the previous guest, serving all they ordered before coming to receive the order of the new guests. I suppose the reason for such organization is exactly because there is not a menu on paper which to be presented on the new guests. It should be mentioned as well the loud shouts of the cook (or a person behind the bar) who in such a way asked for fast reaction from the hostess or somebody else in the kitchen.
It appears that it is a new restaurant with very enthusiastic young people who would like to develop it, but that happens with heard work and devotion and not with rating manipulations.
However, I should conclude that the recipes are really interesting and non-ordinary (for example a cold avocado soup with a veil egg) but there is much more to be done in order to attract loyal customers!

Great place to eat, the place is very unusual as you are invited to eat downstairs in a lovely underground, bright and cosy! The food was very tasty and the inimitable humour of the owner definitely made it one of a place !
Prices are a little high, but choosing the menu would cover your hunger for a little less money
Would come back again !

A wonderful discovery in Tours! We had a fantastic time at Madame Moustache. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the decor is truly lovely, reminiscent of an old French farmhouse, which gives the place a lot of charm.
As for the treats, everything was delicious: the chocolate chip cookie was excellent, as was the chocolate-pistachio cookie, a real favorite. The matcha latte with oat milk was perfectly balanced, and the iced tea was very refreshing.

We just had a wonderful dinner at Comme à La Maison. We weren't sure what restaurant to pick, but I'm really happy that we chose this one. It is intimate and cozy, totally authentically local and quite high quality. The food was very delicious, and the cocktails and wines were amazing. The couple running the place were super friendly, spoke great English, and were undeniably skilled in the culinary arts. They accommodated our picky kid quite readily as well. At the end of an amazing meal, I got an education in the finer points of the different kinds of Chartreuse digestifs, with the kind of explanations and descriptions which you can only get from a true expert. I certainly recommend you try this place for a nice leisurely fine dining experience.

Upstairs very small private space. Fabulous food. We’ve been in France four weeks and best meal yet. Ava (sp) was the cook. The cheese quiche was superb. My wife had chicken and I had a vegetable plate. Excellent. Cab Franc from Loire Valley topped off the meal. Excellent service from our waiter.

Excellent dinner at Au Jardin. We had the 3 course, chefs tasting. It was reasonably priced especially for the location. We enjoyed everything served. Some of our standout favorites were the goat cheese and foie gras. Highly recommend it for anyone in the area. 10/10.

A small place with a lot of heart and soul. We had the veal and what we call in Canada steel head fish (a cross between salmon and trout). Before dinner we had the “Complete” (various cheese and meats with bread served on a wooden board). All of it was excellent and the waiter was very helpful to ensure we had the best experience. The local beer was excellent too. Highly recommend this place and will be back when we come to Tours again.

We loved our relaxing visit here. Our party of 5 was taken care of very well by the owner and the lovely chef. The food was great, we had the lasagna and fish and chips, plus excellent cocktails and good wine recommendations. The owner even gave us tips on local wine tasting places in Chinon. He obviously cares very much about his guests' experiences.

Great place to have lunch and a drink with family or friends. Quite a few options to choose from, quick and friendly service, lots of different table sizes and seating areas. One thing that would make it even better: a few more vegetarian options for the main dishes. Other than that, fully recommended.

I only discovered this food court going to the rooftop bar I kept hearing about. Food is on the higher end but really totally worth it. I saw an amazing looking pizza, talked to the lady preparing burgers with so much passion and got convinced to eat Lobster at the Chien Fou… my husband took the onglet. Both dishes were delicious and eating on the terrace with the view on the cathedral was a real treat!

I really really wanted to like this place because it's close to my house and the concept is cool. Unfortunately, the food is hit and miss. One time, I had the pizza and it was good. Another time, the asian food was also fairly good. However, the last time I went, a friend ordered a croque monsieur and it was awful: just a tiny slice of ham and cheese between two slices of toast. No béchamel, no flavor, and the side greens didn't even have a vinaigrette! My food wasn't much better: 3 hummus-type sauces, of which only 2 were somewhat edible, and a side of cold potatoes that were supposed to be hot. A total waste of time and money.

## A Unique Culinary Experience at La Belle Vue! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What a delightful surprise to discover this new concept at **Cap Saint Jacques**! Already well-known and appreciated at the Tours Market Hall, they've succeeded here with an innovative and bold venture.
### **The Concept: A Village of Flavors**
The location is superb: **clean, bathed in light, and very welcoming**. What makes the experience unique is the organization of the space: **each specialty has its own dedicated stand**. Whether you're craving pizza, tacos, or Asian cuisine, each vendor has its own counter where you can watch the dishes being prepared live.
The system is incredibly smooth: you can sit freely at large communal tables and order either via a **QR code** or directly from the vendors at their respective stands.
### **On the Plate**
There's plenty of variety, but quality remains the priority. We were won over:
* **The Mi Xao:** A pure delight. The fried noodles have a perfect texture, the beef is incredibly tender, the shrimp are fresh, and the vegetables are nice and crisp.
* **The Cookies:** Don't leave without trying them! They're very original, with a special mention for the **pandan** cookie, which is a real discovery.
### **The Service:** The team reflects the atmosphere of the place: **friendly, smiling, and incredibly efficient**. Despite the separate station concept, the organization is perfect: we were served in less than ten minutes.
**In summary:** A modern spot that offers a variety of options without compromising on freshness. A success that confirms its solid reputation!

I had the sea bass which was excellent with some vegetables first I had the hot cheese with walnuts and maple syrup, which was just too good we also had the polenta good and the pork chop, which was good a little tough but good they came with potatoes those creamy potatoes that make you say oh my God too many calories, but you eat them anyway, I also had the chocolate cake with ice cream. The chocolate cake was not as good as I had hoped because it has that melted chocolate in the center and that’s not something I really like, but I did have some of it. it was a nice dining experience in France, I can’t really get that kind in the states. This kind of home cooking creative food. That only the French really know how to make if you’re in the area make sure you make reservations

Cosy restaurant with side walk seating and good French classics that tastes amazing for the prices. They have a selection of local wines too. We went at 7pm and they were all fully booked except for outside seating. So please call to reserve if you want a table.

We look for regional cuisine in Tours, what this restaurant is.
The appetizer were good, the main dish was disappointing. The vegetables were barely warm and the fish was very small and was not a legal size for me to keep when I go fishing.
The desert was microscopic...
And to finish the bill was substantial... 💲💲💲.

We enjoyed a 3 course formule for lunch. Service was warm and friendly, and the venue was entertaining for people watching along the busy street. The food was very good and looked like art!
Smart Tips for Dining on a Budget in Tours
Navigating the restaurant scene in a French city can be tricky if you do not know the local customs. To maximize your savings and eat like a local, you need to understand how dining works in Tours. By following a few strategic rules, you can significantly cut your food costs while actually improving the quality of your meals. Here are the essential strategies for affordable dining in the city.
Always order the "Formule" or "Menu du Jour." Most restaurants in Tours offer a set lunch menu (entrée + plat or plat + dessert) for a fraction of the à la carte price. You will often pay between €15 and €20 for a multi-course meal that would cost double at dinner.
Make lunch your main meal. If you want to try a slightly pricier restaurant, go at noon. The lunch service is almost universally cheaper than dinner, even for the exact same dishes. This is the single best way to eat high-quality food on a backpacker budget.
Look for the "Plat du Jour." This is usually written on a chalkboard outside. It is typically a seasonal dish made with ingredients the chef bought cheaply that morning. It is fresh, fast, and usually the best value in the house.
Drink tap water. In France, asking for "une carafe d’eau" (a pitcher of tap water) is completely normal and free. Ordering bottled water or sodas can add €4 to €6 to your bill per person, which adds up quickly.
Embrace the "Café Gourmand." If you want dessert and coffee but want to save money, look for this option. It is an espresso served with a selection of mini desserts. It usually costs about the same as a single plated dessert but offers much more variety.
Avoid tourist-trap terraces on Place Plumereau. While the medieval square is beautiful for a drink, the food prices on the main square are inflated. Walk two or three streets away in any direction, and you will find the same quality of food for 20% to 30% less.
As the sun sets over the Loire and the limestone facades of Vieux Tours glow gold, there is no better feeling than leaving a restaurant satisfied without having emptied your wallet. The city proves that French cuisine is not about luxury ingredients or white tablecloths; it is about respect for the product and the pleasure of sharing a table.
From the bustling markets of Les Halles to the quiet cobblestone alleys, affordable dining is everywhere if you know where to look. So pull up a chair, order the plat du jour, and toast to the good life in Touraine. Bon appétit!
