Nestled beneath the imposing shadow of Mont Blanc, Chamonix is more than just a ski resort; it is the beating heart of alpine adventure. As the host of the very first Winter Olympics in 1924, this valley carries a legacy of mountaineering prestige and high-altitude luxury that few destinations on earth can rival. Whether you are visiting to conquer the Vallée Blanche, tackle the UTMB trail, or simply breathe in the crisp mountain air, the choice of accommodation defines the rhythm of your trip.
However, Chamonix is not a city of monolithic high-rises; it is a patchwork of distinct hamlets and micro-neighborhoods. From the bustling, car-free streets of Chamonix Centre to the serene, family-friendly atmosphere of Les Praz or the sun-drenched slopes of Argentière, location matters immensely. Your proximity to a specific lift station, such as the Aiguille du Midi or Le Brévent, can save you precious hours of logistical planning.
The hospitality scene here reflects the duality of the mountain itself: rugged on the outside, yet refined and warm on the inside. You will find everything from historic chalets that have hosted generations of climbers to sleek, contemporary design hotels that wouldn’t look out of place in a Scandinavian capital. The common thread is a deep respect for the landscape and a dedication to providing sanctuary after a long day at altitude.
For the discerning traveler, a hotel in Chamonix is rarely just a place to sleep; it is a basecamp. The best properties understand that recovery is part of the adventure, offering world-class spas, deep soaking tubs, and roaring fireplaces to soothe tired muscles. Gastronomy also plays a starring role, with many hotels housing restaurants that celebrate Savoyard traditions alongside modern French cuisine.
Selecting the right hotel requires a nuanced understanding of your own itinerary. Are you a first-time visitor wanting to be steps away from the main nightlife and the Aiguille du Midi cable car? Or are you a seasoned alpinist seeking the quiet, north-facing slopes of Argentière? Perhaps you are a summer visitor looking for a quiet garden and a pool with a view of the Drus.
We have traversed the valley to curate a list that caters to every type of traveler. From budget-conscious boutique stays to five-star palaces of wellness, this guide breaks down the distinct character of each property. Here is our definitive selection of the best places to stay in the Valley of Chamonix.

The hotel has great character, with stylish decor and thoughtful perks like complimentary coffee and soda in the lobby.
However, taller guests should beware: the ceiling clearance in the room is extremely low. At 182 cm (roughly 6'0"), I had to walk bent over the entire time and still managed to bump my head more than a few times.
It is a charming spot, but only if you are on the shorter side or don't mind ducking your way through your stay.

Love Rocky pop, brilliant hotel. Very clean, great staff. Brilliant bar with a great post ski vibe, and resturant food was great, lots of options from pizza and burgers, to more traditional French options, with provenance key, while being fairly priced. Ate 3 nights at the hotel.
Room was great, but lacked seating due to the quirky style hence only 4 star. It's nice to have a sit down and a cup of coffee or glass of wine. There is no tea or coffee making facilities nor fridge in the room, but still and sparkling water along with tea and coffee machine located in reception. This would not stop us staying again as public areas made up with seating, but it's a busy hotel if you want peace. There is some lovely outdoor space, but not suitable in the winter.
Location is 15 min by car to chamonix and 7 to Les Houches ski drop-off. Hotel parking was free and there is a ski shop onsite for convenience. Highly recommend.

Our room on the first floor was clean but small for a couple with a toddler. the temperature was too hot with the blanket and too cold without. Unfortunately although we really enjoyed the restaurant’s pizzas!! and the hotel’s attention to families with kids (kids corner and playground), we didn’t sleep well during this trip because of the temperature issue and the noise coming from the road. (3 nights during Easter)

This was a fun, funky place to stay while skiing the Chamonix valley areas. The room was nice and quiet and the bed comfortable. Nice shower with plenty of hot water. Their breakfast is overpriced, but the staff is helpful and friendly. There is a bus stop meters from the front door making it very convenient to get around. I would recommend this place

This is a nice hotel that's a bit outdated and quite dark. The room was adequate but a little bit old while the bathroom felt modern and clean. There are a few nice spots to lounge inside and outside of the hotel but in April there weren't that many people to have a conversation with. I was disappointed with the breakfast. European breakfasts are big and this was a little bit on the lower quality side. Still, much better than any typical American hotel breakfast but I would say below European standards.
Staff was super friendly and helpful with all room related things plus giving me advice about the local region.
Overall this is a good quality hotel but I was expecting a little more for the price paid.

Perfection!
If you are looking for a lovely authentic French ski experience- this is it. Before traveling here we had looked at the higher end hotels and boy, are we glad we stayed
at this gem. This hotel has such charm and beauty. The staff is so kind and accommodating.
This hotel is located at the end of a busy square right in front of a church- nice and quiet. The views are to die for. Make sure to secure a room with a little terrace in the front of the hotel. Sipping coffee while watching the clouds roll over Mont Blanc with the church bells ringing in the square, is the stuff dreams are made of.
There is a little brasserie downstairs that is open daily and you are 30 seconds from all the restaurants in the heart of town.
The ski bus is within 5 minutes walking. Otherwise you are at the base of Brevent hill and 10 mins walking to Aiguille de Midi lifts.
The hotel is clean, spacious and is a true Chamonix experience.
Stay here!

My partner was diagnosed with cancer which meant we couldn’t travel. Despite weeks of notice this hotel stuck by its cancelation policy. This was the only hotel/air BnB out of 3 months of travel booked across France, Switzerland and Italy. All other places accommodated and waived their policies. They have every right to stick to policy and I also have every right to review them.

Great little hotel in the middle of everywhere you want to be in a Chamonix. Comfortable and clean rooms, a good petit dej, fabulous staff. A lot of locals hang out at the café in front.

"Bad customers service..."
I initially left a short review out of frustration.
However, to clarify:
As the owner of Nirvana Dream restaurant in Paris, I always make sure to understand the conditions before confirming any reservation. That is why I contacted your establishment by phone and email prior to booking to gather the necessary information.
As mentioned, I booked the room 3 days before arrival and had to cancel 24 hours later due to unexpected professional obligations. I fully understand that your cancellation policy requires 15 days’ notice. However, while no particular conditions are required to make a reservation, the cancellation terms appear extremely strict, especially in cases of genuine emergency.
What disappointed me most was receiving a phone call on the booking date, despite having cancelled the booking few days earlier. This indicates a lack of internal communication and coordination.
For these reasons, my experience regarding customer service was not satisfactory...

Easily one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at.
Headline items: The Saturday wedding involved a lawn DJ playing music until 00:45. Normally the Folie parties head inside at 22:00 to not disturb guests, but this time ownership decided to give the middle finger to any of their other guests. I also hope they had the appropriate license to play music that loud and late as this is typically illegal in France.
Next, my partner was trapped in a broken down elevator. These things happen. However what is not acceptable is for the reaction of the staff when I attempted to get help. They couldn't have cared less and in the end simply walked away from me rather than showing the smallest element of wanting to help. Add to the staff reaction, the emergency call button in the elevator was not working, a clear safety issue.
Otherwise, the spa facilities are lacking and not to the standard you would expect for a 4 star hotel. The parking is not included and it's very expensive and without a guarantee of a parking spot even when you have already paid. And in terms of room quality and upkeep, they need to do better.
It's such a shame, it's such a nice building, in a great location with so much promise.
Donal Hughes★★★★☆
Good hotel. Don’t believe the bad reviews. There are no bed bugs, there are no flooded bathrooms. Huge reception and seating area inside and outside looking at the mountains. Lovely bar. Room was small, bathroom was tiny, kindof reminded us of a cruise ship. But you know what, everything worked perfectly. Loads of sockets for charging which was fantastic. The staff were friendly, the room staff called to fill the water bottle. Just nice touches. Stayed for 2 nights after the TMB, brilliant price, and we were very happy.

La Follie douche in Chamonix: Great location but lacking in comfort. Spouce and I arrived to the hotel having made reservations 2 months in advance requesting a double or queen size bed. The front desk agent was friendly, and greeted us, and informed us that our room was ready with two single beds. We corrected her stating our request was for a double or queen size bed. She said then said she could change our room to a larger bed. The room was small, with a tiny bathroom containing a heat towel rack that blocked the toilet seat, a sink with one shelf below at the level close to the floor and a free standing shower. To get to your toiletries like a toothbrush, toothpaste, etc, you had to bend down below the sink for any items or rest them on top of the toilet seat. The bed was comfortable, but very little room to move around. We were surprised by the poor bedroom setup for a hotel that looks great from the outside, with great night entertainment. All the staff were friendly and polite.

Our family of 5 stayed for two nights at La Folie Douce, while exploring Chamonix on our way to Zermatt. We had a family room, which is really two connected rooms, one of which has four bunk/twin beds. For the space, it was great for us, as our kids are college-aged. Each room had a separate bathroom and cubbies for luggage/clothing storage. We enjoyed the large spread for breakfast each morning and loved the variety of breads, pastries, and teas. The hotel is very well located just at the edge of the main part of town, so it is a bit quieter. If it were winter, we could ski down to the hotel. We enjoyed a couple of hikes in the area and meals at a couple of spots in town (many were closed as it is the shoulder season). The only issues were minor ones--the showers in the bathrooms are small and awkward. The shower in my kids' bathroom didn't drain and ours could not stay up on the pole on the wall. They also tended to soak the entire bathroom when used, as there is no protective wall. The rooms were a bit on the worn side, but were still comfortable. Compared to other places in Chamonix, the room price was similar. For the location, quality, and amenities, it was a nice place to stay. In the busier winter and summer seasons, it could definitely get loud, though.

Well located hotel with nice facilities. Within walking distance to city centre and eateries. A busy hotel with friendly staff. Has an outdoor cycling kiosk just outside the hotel and overlooks a landing spot for tandem parachuting. 2 bus stops away from Chamonix Sud Bus Terminal.

Great hotel! We stayed there twice during our TMB trip. The rooms are spacious and modern. The hotel is very clean, and the employees and the reception team are wonderful and very helpful! Breakfast is at 6:30 which is great for anyone who wants to start the TMB early. The location is perfect, just across from all the main bus station and 5 min from the shops and main area. Very recommended!!

We had a wonderful stay at Plan A. The hotel offers incredible views and is ideally located—just a short walk from food places, coffee shops, the cable car station, and even the coach station, which is only one minute away.
The staff were extremely friendly, helpful, and made sure we had all the information we needed. The food was very nice, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel is peaceful and relaxing—perfect for a family stay. We especially loved the cozy reading corner with tables, chairs, and games.
There are lovely restaurants nearby, including a nice Indian restaurant called Annapurna. The location is also great for exploring nearby destinations like Annecy and Geneva using public transport.
A big plus was that they kindly allowed us to store our luggage before check-in and after check-out, which made our trip much easier.
Overall, I would highly recommend this place. We truly enjoyed our stay and can’t wait to come back for a longer visit.

We did not stay so cannot talk about the rooms but I can talk about how the staff is amazing. My wife and I were waiting for the bus and the heat caused her to have an intense headache/migraine. The staff was able to bring us into a semi-private room in the back, they got us cold water, reopened the kitchen for us to make us food and went above and beyond to make my wife feel better. Ok our next trip to Chamonix, we know exactly what to stay.

Was great for our family of 4. We got the suite with pull out couch. Pull out sucked but my two teenagers put the mattress on the floor and it was great. What a view, good breakfast, nice staff, all great for our adventure week!

I had a really lovely stay at PlanB. It was my first time solo travelling and I was a bit nervous from the offset! But having friendly faces help make everything run smoothly was excellent! My room was very nice and clean. It was also quiet and all round very comfortable. Ski lockers were also really handy and accessible! I would definitely stay here again and I’ll be recommending here to my friends and family!

This was one of our favourite hotels during our two-week trip through Switzerland, Italy and France. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Le Faucigny is beautifully located, with plenty of outdoor spaces to enjoy the stunning scenery. Our bedroom was small, but that wasn't an issue and was full of charm.
The staff surprised us by asking if we would be using their free spa (the hotel name should have given it away! 😂). We gladly obliged and enjoyed relaxing in the jacuzzi and sauna.
We only wish we could have stayed a few more nights. Hey ho, all good things must come to an end, and we certainly ended our trip on a high. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this hotel. I booked 1 Classic Double Room for 3 nights and booked 1 Classic Double Room for 1 night on separate reservations. Both times we were placed in a very cramped room with a strangely sloped ceiling.
Like other reviews have mentioned, it made it impossible to stand up in the shower, and you have to "shower" while sitting in the tub. There is no curtain so it can get messy. Definitely do not recommend for seniors or fall hazards! I'm in my 30s and average height 5'10". Just getting in and out of the tub was hard, needing to be hunched over, since the ceiling was sloped over the tub. I could not imagine my parents needing to get in and out of the tub like that.
Just walking into and out of the door for the bathroom, I needed to duck my head. The ceiling slopes over the bed too, so I needed to duck my head getting in and out, which was tiring and easy to forget in the middle of the night.
I get now why the reviews here are so polarizing. It seems like some other rooms do not have this problem, so those guests likely gave good marks. But 2 out of 2 times, we had this experience, so it is a bit luck of the draw. Since you have no control over what room you get, I would strongly recommend avoiding this terrible experience.
Also, while the website lists the hotel as having air conditioning, in practice, it barely functioned, and it was extremely hot during the day and hard to sleep in at night.
The beds were comfortable, and the location was very good. Reception was a mixed bag. There was a middle-aged man, who was always unfriendly in our interactions. When asked where we might be able to put our luggage to store temporarily, he pointed to a closet across from him and said, "You know how to open a door, right?" The other receptionists were extremely nice, and we hoped every time we needed to pass reception, it was one of the very friendly staff members and not the middle-aged man.
In summary, go ahead and book here if you want to gamble on having a good experience or terrible one. But in my view, there are definitely better options out there. Buyer beware.

This hotel is in the perfect location for a ski holiday in Chamonix. Very close to the ESF school meeting point and just minutes from the restaurants and shops.
We upgraded our room on arrival which was a good choice as the rooms here are small. The room was cosy and the bed was comfortable so we slept well. We were happy to hotel could accommodate a later checkout.
Breakfast was simple - croissants very tasty.
The spa was a plus and great for after a day of skiing - good sauna but the jacuzzi could be warmer.

Wonderful stay! We stayed a total of 15 nights here, and by the end it felt like we were leaving home. We brought skis and climbing gear, and even with a pile of stuff, the storage options made it very comfortable. Breakfast was terrific, I'll miss the croissants and coffee, and of course the spa was lovely to relax and meet other travelers. Staff were supremely friendly, always quick to offer suggestions or help get us where we needed to go. Location cannot be beat, in the perfect spot to walk everywhere but not along a noisy boulevard for peaceful nights. Would 110% recommend and stay again.

I had the pleasure of staying five nights at this beautiful hotel. On arriving the sign says it all - ‘Chalet Hotel de Charme’. This is indeed the most charming of places to stay on this gorgeous town!
Located two minutes walk from the main area of Chamonix town, it’s far enough away that there’s no street noise and close enough to amble to one of the many fabulous restaurants and cafes in minutes.
The staff are also outstanding in that understanding and familiar way that makes you feel right at home.
Over five nights I met four different members of the team and in their own way they added so much to my stay! Enrique, thank you for your kindness and understanding of my fear of heights (in the city that is all about climbing and height based adventures!) helping me find new adventures that were land based was much appreciated!
Equally Maurice, Svetlana and Najib, you all made my stay feel like home.
Arriving in the lounge and greeted
with a lovely chilled glass of rose to watch Wimbledon, thank you for making those special moments happen!
This is a charming hotel in a beautiful town. I will be back to stay at again and again.

We loved the décor, which had a warm and cosy mountain chalet feel. The room was very comfortable for three guests and well equipped with tea and coffee-making facilities. A small fridge would be a welcome addition and would make the room even more convenient.

We had a lovely stay. Three woman in a shared room. It was clean, the staff were all very attentive and accommodating.

So pleased with the location too, which placed us just opposite the hub of the event we came to take part in (Mont Blanc Marathon), and walking distance from restaurants.

The rooms are small but cozy. We had a superior room with two balconies. The breakfast buffet for €15 was mostly cold items with boil-your-own eggs. The staff was very friendly and the location was perfect. We paid €25 extra per person for the hot tub and it was awesome.

Our stay was great. For the four days we spent in the hotel we couldn't find anything to justify the cheap price of the hotel. Everything felt well above average. They cleaned our room daily without our asking, they had a great care for us every time and everyone was so kind answering our questions. Lastly the location was great. It is right in the middle of the town center for sightseeing and for skiing it is the closest hotel to the Chamonix Center Bus Stop. We recommend it to everyone we will definitely choose this place if we come again

The building has been renovated and the rooms are quite nice overall. However, some small details could be improved, like doors that do not close properly and some air drafts in the room (see photos).
There is a spa available, but you need to book a 1-hour slot in advance at the reception. The spa includes a shower, a sauna and a hammam. Both the sauna and hammam are small, suitable for about 3–4 people each.
What left me a bit disappointed was the attitude of some staff members at the reception, who were not always very welcoming and did not greet guests when arriving or passing by.
Overall, it is a good hotel with a nice location, but with some details and service aspects that could be improved

Absolutely excellent! What style this place has. And the perks? So many delightful little somethings to charm you even more.
Free spa of sauna, ice cave, hot tub, cold plunge was so well done! Their lobby is so well decorated with lots of neat little things to occupy your time.
Welcoming us with this delightful bright green tea. Free green apples in the lobby, or sparkling water, or cappuccinos!
The rooms were surprisingly quiet, perhaps sound proofed. The soap and lotions smell so nice.
Perhaps most impressively, they’ll hold your luggage for the entire TMB if you stay just one night!!
This place goes over and above in all the ways that matter. I’m absolutely staying here if I return to Chamonix.

Overall great room. The rooms were spacious and very clean. The beds were very comfortable. However, the rooms don't have A/C, which is becoming a hot topic in France right now. Since I didn't notice any bugs getting into the room, I recommend just leaving the windows/door open to let the cooler air come into the room.
The breakfast was excellent. The staff was very professional and very helpful. It's ideally located near the town centre. Free water to drink from as well. Would stay again despite the lack of A/C.

Simply Stunning & perfect location.
This place is just beautiful, and very handy to shops and restaurants, yet a nice distance from the noisy bars. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff and given a nice family room which was ideal for us with a balcony looking over the river and views of the mountains. This Hotel has an amazing bar and lounge area, and a massive shout-out to Sam on the bar and reception who was great to chat with, and made us feel so very welcome. Sam is a credit to the hospitality industry and clearly enjoys her job. Our room was very comfortable, and the bathroom clean - what I really liked was the separate toilet and bathroom. A nice gesture was the complimentary selections of food in the afternoons. If I can find my way back to Chamonix in the future, I would stay in this hotel again - without hesitation.

It was my first time ever in France. The receptionist was really nice and helpful, and I thank you for what you've done. I got in a room with Mont Blanc view which was very memorable. And location wise, it's near to the city center, there's nearby bus station as well as cafes to sit down and enjoy your hot chocolate or coffee with great view. I would recommend anyone visiting Chamonix to stay here. One thing to improve, for the breakfast maybe figure out better ways to ask for room number before eating not while eating.

Excellent location. The hotel is situated in the centre of the town, shops, restaurants, cable cars, train and bus stations are a walking distance. Staff are friendly, professional and always available. The breakfast is very good with a wide variety of sweet and savory choices. Should we decide to go back we would not book the same apartment for four adults. The bedroom in the basement had no natural light and was very stuffy. Although there was a door and a small window in the room, these were locked and covered with blinds. The apartment only had one shower room (with no WC) located in the basement. The only WC was on the ground floor, next to the kitchen/living room with the sofa bed. Rather an uncomfortable set-up for four adults. Furthermore, the WC had no hand washing facility, therefore whoever used it was obliged to wash their hands in the kitchen sink.

What truly set this hotel apart from the rest was the staff. The front desk team was incredible; despite being constantly busy, they never hesitated to go the extra mile to ensure our stay was enjoyable. Our room was perfectly situated beneath Mont Blanc and within walking distance of all the top sites in Chamonix. We loved sleeping to the sounds of the Arve River and enjoying wine and cheese on our balcony. Rick Steves was right, this place is a gem.
A special thank you to Amber and Sam for being so accommodating and making our stay truly memorable for our 10th anniversary.

If you’re looking for peace and quiet, this hotel is an absolute gem. It’s a little isolated, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. The surroundings are incredibly serene, making it the perfect place to slow down and unwind. I could easily imagine spending an entire day here—enjoying a drink on the outdoor terrace, taking a leisurely walk through the nearby forest, or simply sitting by the water and soaking in the tranquility.
The room was cosy, comfortable, and well equipped. The balcony came with two chairs, making it a lovely spot to relax, and the room also had plenty of hangers and a heater, which were especially useful after a day of hiking.
One tip: head down early for dinner if you want the BBQ meat—it was absolutely delicious! I enjoyed it so much that I ended up ordering two portions for myself.
The staff were also warm, welcoming, and friendly throughout my stay, making the experience even more enjoyable.
I highly recommend this hotel, especially if you’re looking to disconnect, recharge, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Like other reviews, yes the toilets are small, but functional. A room can home 8 people, theres like 4 bunk beds. there is also a hook beside each bed to hang your towel.
If you can i suggest taking the top bunk.
There are cardboards by the door for you to store your bags if you need. They clean the room everyday, because there was one day i was back early and they happen to be cleaning.
The wifi suck shit, it disconnect itself.
There is no ventilation in the room if you dont open the door.
If you choose to walk from chamonix, it took me 30mins, taking a train from les praz and walk 10mins or a bus at door step is a better choice if you are carrying heavy backpack.
They provide towel and a small bottle of soap only.
I would say for the price, its worth it.
The view outside is also nice, the place is also clean.
The shower have cold and hot water

Beautiful 3 star hotel. Great customer service . Comfortable clean room .
4 stars because of the need for bit more cleaner bathroom. Shower door is not working properly and grouting needs cleaning. Otherwise I would give 5 stars .
Away from the town and no in house restaurent. But can purchase snacks and alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks.
Great breakfast.
Close to bus stop and 5 mins to the town.
If you need a restaurent its a bit of a walk.

My fiancée and I stayed here to celebrate our engagement and booked the romantic package, which was excellent! The staff treated us with a very nice bottle of Champagne and macarons which we enjoyed on the balcony of our private room with a great view of the mountains. The breakfast was great and included freshly baked croissants, pains au chocolat, and baguettes. Thank you to the staff!
We would definitely stay here again next time we’re in Chamonix. Also seems like a great spot to stay on the edge of town for skiers/hikers/adventurers.

Had a great stay at L’Arveyron Chamonix!
The receptionist was very friendly, helpful, and informative. When I asked for hot water to cook rice, they kindly gave it for free, which I really appreciated. They also explained the bus routes in detail when I was confused.
The room was clean and comfortable, and the view from the room was beautiful. The location is also convenient, close to the bus stop, making it easy to get around.
If I come back to Chamonix, I would definitely stay here again. Highly recommended!

Lovely staff who couldn’t do enough to help us. They even provided us with a kettle and fresh milk. The bed was comfy, there was lots of hot water and everything was clean. A good breakfast. Unfortunately, on our side of the hotel, the hotel next door is now a busy building site, not la Vertical’s fault, and Friday night is teenager gathering night to carouse at the moon until the police arrived about midnight to chase them away. Thursday night was dead quiet.

There was big construction near the hotel, but we were not informed in advance. It also did not feel like good value for the price.
If you have a large suitcase, please note that you must carry it up the stairs to reception. There is no elevator or easy ramp, and the staff did not offer any help.
The location was good and the staff were friendly, but I would probably choose a different hotel next time.

We have had groups stay at Hotel La Vertical several times and we love the location close to the lift we use to get up to Le Brevent. The staff, particularly the front desk, are extremely helpful, friendly and go out of their way to make sure our stay is comfortable. We will definitely be staying here again.

This was a great stay. The location was great for my short stay and in walking distance of the places/stations I wanted to visit. The staff were friendly and helpful and spoke good English. The room was reasonably sized and bright at the time of year I visited. They were also helpful and offered to help me get to Chamonix from the airport.

We had a very unfortunate experience at this hotel in August 2025. During our stay, we discovered a severe bed bug infestation in our room. We have photo and video evidence of this, which we will upload with this review.
When we reported the issue, the hotel suggested that the bed bugs could have come with us in our luggage or from other resent guests, even though we found both adult bed bugs and nymphs visibly crawling in cracks in the walls. This clearly indicates a long-standing infestation that could not possibly have originated from us. After looking through other reviews, we also noticed that previous guests have reported similar experiences and received the same dismissive response.
While the hotel arranged alternative accommodation for our final night after our request, the infestation forced us to cancel onward travel plans, book extra nights at another hotel, and pay for professional decontamination of our belongings to prevent further spread.
The hotel initially offered us compensation of 300 €, but later refused to honor this, referring us instead to Booking.com. Booking.com however provided a refund from half the total cost for the La Verticale stay.
This was an extremely stressful experience. Bed bugs should never be present in a hotel room, and the way the hotel handled the situation left us very disappointed. Guests deserve transparency and future travelers should be aware that this appears to be a recurring problem at this property.

We had a wonderful stay here and would definitely come back. We were lucky enough to be welcomed by a fellow Australian at reception which was such a lovely surprise and made us feel at home straight away. Our room was spacious and comfortable, but the highlight was waking up to the incredible views every morning. We also had access to the spa and my daughters absolutely loved going there each night after a day of exploring. Breakfast had plenty of variety each morning and the location was great too. It was an easy walk into the town, with everything close by.

While not a five-star hotel, it definitely deserves a five star rating.
Our family of four from Taiwan, along with a group of our friends, were a party of nine people with four kids and five adults and we spent a lovely four nights here.
Every staff member we met, day and night, were very friendly and pleasant to interact with, and actively try to be helpful and kind.
Our family room was clean and spacious, except for the bathrooms which were a bit on the small side unfortunately. The beds and pillows were great.
The view from our Mont-Blanc facing balcony was spectacular. The location was great, easy walk into town center and activities around.
The spa area was clean, comfortable and well maintained, although the "pool" was very small.
Dinners were decent if very repetitive, nearly the same every night. Breakfast was great. Staff was very friendly and caring.
The free play video game machine at the lobby was a really nice touch, my kids enjoyed it very much.
Only slight annoyance was the parking situation - the garage was often full, and the awkward layout meant many spaces were very difficult to park.
The small issues do not overshadow the great qualities of this hotel. We would recommend it and would happily come back again.

The hotel is in a fantastic location, just a 3-minute walk from the city centre. The rooms were very nice, comfortable and well maintained. The staff were very friendly and helpful, which made our stay very pleasant. The spa is nice, although quite small. The main downside was the hotel parking, which is quite small and expensive. In fact, it was more expensive to park at the hotel than to use the public car park, which is also only a 3-minute walk away. Overall, we had a very good experience and would happily stay here again.

Our room was wonderful with a beautiful balcony overlooking Mont Blanc and a modern bathroom. Great location, within walking distance of the main shops and restaurants but removed enough from the noise. Dinner and breakfast was overpriced. Lobby area not great and you only receive two “free” hours at the spa each day which have to be reserved through the main desk. Overall, a great place to stay but be aware of certain rules!

Pros
- Friendly, efficient English-speaking staff
- Views from the rooms and spa were incredible
- Excellent range of options at the breakfast buffet and opened at 06.30 so eat then get out for the day early
- Able to use facilities of hotel on day of checkout. We were kindly allowed to use the spa and hotel showers on the afternoon after we had checked out at no additional cost. This meant we were able to run all day and freshen up before heading to the airport. A really nice touch as meant you could maximise time in Chamonix rather than wait for flight home.
- Toiletries in the room were good quality (not overstocked so environmental friendly) and able to ask for items free if charge from reception
- Great location close to town centre and short walk to bus stops/train station
Cons
- Mattress was very firm so found it quite uncomfortable (personal preference though)
- No aircon: stayed in June and the room was uncomfortably hot to sleep and the road outside was a bit too noisy to leave the windows open overnight to cool things down. It was exceptionally hot weather however so likely a very occasional issue.
- Limited hooks in the bedroom for coats etc
- Drinks in the hotel bar were expensive - EUR12 for a 1664 Krongenbourg beer.
Despite a few small cons, this hotel was absolutely fantastic and I wouldn't hesitate to stay again.
Essential Tips for Booking a Hotel in Chamonix
While the list above offers a curated selection of the finest properties, the practicalities of booking in a high-altitude resort can be tricky. The valley has a unique micro-climate and a specific set of logistical rules that differ from standard city breaks. To ensure your stay is as smooth as the grooming on the Grands Montets, it is vital to consider a few key factors before confirming your reservation. These insights will help you match the right property to the right season and avoid common pitfalls.
1. Prioritize Proximity to Your Preferred Ski Area
Chamonix is a collection of separate ski domains, not one interconnected bowl. If you are an expert skier, staying in Argentière puts you at the foot of the Grands Montets, while beginners might prefer the gentle slopes of Le Tour or Les Houches. Always check the walking distance to the specific lift or bus stop you plan to use most frequently.
2. Understand the "Chamonix Valley" Layout
When a hotel says it is in "Chamonix," it might actually be 10 kilometers away in a village like Servoz or Vallorcine. This is excellent for peace and pricing, but it requires reliance on the train or bus system. If you want to walk out the door into the action, filter your search specifically for "Chamonix Centre" or "Chamonix Sud."
3. Book Parking in Advance
Driving in Chamonix town center can be challenging, and on-site hotel parking is rarely guaranteed due to limited underground space. If you are arriving by car, confirm a reserved parking spot with the hotel directly rather than assuming there will be room. In winter, this is non-negotiable due to snow-clearing operations.
4. Consider the "Half-Board" Option
After a long day in the cold, the last thing you want to do is hunt for a restaurant in the freezing night air. Many traditional chalets and mid-range hotels offer half-board rates that include breakfast and dinner. This often provides better value than dining a la carte, especially given the high standard of Savoyard cuisine in hotel restaurants.
5. Check for Air Conditioning and Summer Amenities
Due to the high altitude, many historic hotels were built without air conditioning because it was historically unnecessary. However, recent summer heatwaves have made rooms uncomfortable. If you are visiting in July or August, verify that your room has cooling or at least excellent ventilation, and look for properties with outdoor pools or gardens.
6. Be Aware of the "Taxe de Séjour"
Like most French resorts, Chamonix charges a local tourist tax per person, per night. This is often not included in the price quoted by third-party booking sites and must be paid at the hotel. The amount varies based on the star rating of the property, so budget for this small additional expense to avoid surprise at checkout.
Chamonix is a destination that demands presence. The right hotel allows you to immerse yourself fully in the valley’s rhythm, whether that means watching the sunrise paint the peaks pink from your balcony or falling asleep to the distant rumble of a glacier. The properties listed above represent the pinnacle of hospitality in the region, offering a sanctuary from the elements and a gateway to the high mountains.
As you finalize your plans, remember that the mountain is a living entity. The best hoteliers in Chamonix are those who respect this environment, guiding their guests toward sustainable exploration and authentic local experiences. Choose a place that resonates with your personal style of travel, and you will find that the magic of Chamonix extends far beyond the slopes and into the very walls of your temporary home.
