Sitting down to a meal in Cannes is rarely just about the food. It is about the theatre of the Riviera, the sparkle of the Mediterranean, and the weight of history that hangs in the air like the scent of sea salt and lavender. While the city is globally synonymous with film festivals and superyachts, its culinary heart beats strongest in the traditional restaurants that have anchored its old streets for generations. These are places where the decor is often unapologetically classic, the service is polished, and the recipes have been guarded like cinematic secrets.
Finding authentic Provençal and classic French cuisine amid the glitz can be a challenge. The Croisette is lined with glamorous spots designed for seeing and being seen, but true connoisseurs know that the soul of Cannes lies in the backstreets of Le Suquet or the quiet corners of the Forville market district. Here, the focus shifts from celebrity to substance, where the clatter of silverware and the pop of a cork are the only soundtrack you need.
The essence of a traditional French restaurant in this sun-drenched city lies in its commitment to terroir. Expect menus that change with the seasons, celebrating the arrival of asparagus in spring, the explosion of tomatoes in summer, and the earthy truffles of autumn. The proximity to the Mediterranean means seafood is often the star, but the rustic charm of a slow-cooked daube or a perfectly roasted rack of lamb is never far from reach.
To dine traditionally here is to embrace a specific rhythm. It is a leisurely affair, where you are never rushed, where the bread basket is constantly replenished, and where the wine list reads like a geography lesson of the French countryside. It is an experience built on the French belief that a meal is an event to be savored, not a transaction to be completed.
We have curated a list that cuts through the tourist traps to highlight the establishments that locals hold dear. These are the rooms where the waiters wear waistcoats, where the sauces are reduced to perfection, and where the spirit of old-world France remains beautifully intact. Whether you are seeking a romantic dinner in a vaulted cellar or a sun-drenched lunch on a hidden terrace, this guide points you toward the authentic soul of Cannes.
To help you navigate this culinary landscape, we have compiled the definitive list of the best traditional French restaurants in the city. Each venue offers a unique take on heritage cooking, ensuring that your gastronomic journey is as memorable as the view of the Bay.

We have only tried 2 dishes but they were made to perfection and the atmosphere is just wonderful.
You can tell that this family owned restaurant puts all their passion and dedication into giving their guests the best Provence experience. I have huge respect and admiration for them.
We had the red wine beef and the quail.
Thank you Nicholas😊

We had a great lunch here the other day. The food was lovely, and it’s located in a great spot in the old town. The servers were super friendly and accommodating. We had multiple members of our group with allergies, specifically dairy, and they had multiple options and were able to tell us exactly what was in each dish due to fresh produce being sourced from the market each morning. You can tell there is a lot of love and pride around their product and service. Overall, a great find, would recommend!

This restaurant is just 100 meters away from the Cannes Sign viewing platform — we found it on a search right after checking out the landmark, and it was such a lucky surprise! Specializing in traditional French cuisine, it has a history of over 40 years, which really shows in the food.
The waiter recommended the Terrine as an appetizer, and it was absolutely amazing — rich in meat flavor with zero fishy or gamey taste. For mains, we ordered the lamb chop: first grilled then braised, it was so flavorful, and it came as a whole, thick piece, not the thin slice you get at most other restaurants. We also tried the braised squab pot; the meat was tender, smooth, and packed with flavor, plus the plating was beautiful.
The interior is rustic, cozy, and full of historic charm. All in all, this was an incredibly stunning dinner — highly recommended!
Note: They change menu seasonally, so be ready to explore new dishes!

This restaurant doesn’t quite live up to the hype and reviews I have seen. Of course, taste is subjective, but I have had better food, service and overall experience elsewhere in France.
The food was okay, but the service felt a bit unorganised and not very attentive. Drinks were forgotten and the staff seemed rushed. Maybe there just weren’t enough people working that evening. It makes a difference when a full restaurant has enough staff to keep things smooth.

THE MOST AUTHENTIC, INCREDIBLE FRENCH FOOD!!!
My husband and I had the most exquisite 3 course meal today. Every single part of the meal was so delicious, all cooked with beautiful, fresh produce.
The food was perfectly cooked, served and presented. The whole experience was divine and this place is such a hidden gem! Also the wait stuff are just wonderful! You will not regret going here ✨😍✨

I was here for a walk in and surprisingly they had a table available - I was with 3 other people. I got the steak and fries (I didn’t have a picture of the fries but I have one for the steak) to share with my brother, and the other people got a grilled octopus and some chicken dish. My brother and I enjoyed the steak and thought the pepper sauce was a highlight. However, the steak could be more tender. The fries were not bad, but also not good. The sauce definitely made them taste better. The others said the dishes they ordered were good, and reasonable for the price. I tasted their dishes and they were pretty good. The service was good - the staff were very friendly. The food also arrived faster than most restaurants I’ve ate at. The portions were decent; not too much and not too little. Again, I did a walk in but when someone in my group tried to book beforehand, she was informed they were fully booked. I’m not sure if we were lucky to be able to get a table from a cancellation or if it’s normal, but if you want to come I’d recommend a booking. The seats were comfy and the atmosphere has a cohesive cozy and cafe-like vibe.

This restaurant delivers everything one hopes to find in a truly accomplished French bistro and merits the highest praise.
From the moment we arrived, the service was exemplary—gracious, attentive, and expertly judged throughout. Every interaction reflected genuine hospitality, enhancing the experience without ever becoming intrusive.
The menu was thoughtfully composed, offering a well-balanced selection of classic and contemporary dishes. Each course demonstrated exceptional technique, quality ingredients, and a clear respect for French culinary tradition. The standard of cooking was consistently outstanding.
Particularly noteworthy was the pacing of the meal. In an era when diners can often feel hurried, we were afforded the time and space to fully appreciate each course and enjoy the occasion at a leisurely pace.
A restaurant of considerable charm and distinction, delivering both refined cuisine and polished hospitality. I would recommend it without reservation to anyone seeking an authentic and memorable French dining experience.

Good food and genuinely excellent service. We were looked after beautifully from start to finish, and that attentiveness made the whole meal better. Unfussy, well done cooking paired with staff who clearly care. The kind of place you're glad you found and would happily return to.
Manon and Melissa were wonderful - we're definitely coming back!

I will praise the octopus, as it was very well cooked - the ends of its legs were not burnt, it had a tight amount of spices. The sauce and an aubergine accompanying it were also good, but the octopus was a highlight of the dish. The starter with aubergines, although, well prepared lacked seasoning, so I would not recommend it in particular. Attentive service, the restaurant is in a very good condition, kept clean. I can imagine that other dishes taste also good.

La Cantine is an absolute gem, wonderful staff and food. I was unsure what I fancied to eat so asked for the whatever the chef recommended! I was not disappointed! To start a wonderful beetroot dish, for main an exquisite piece of beef and to finish an incredible Chocolate fondant. Will return soon!

We came here for lunch after reading the other positive reviews on a hot Cannes summer day. They food and service were outstanding, the owners were so nice and friendly. The stars were the fish soup and the crepes. Pls support this place

After a walk down the Croissette we were ready for lunch. The L'Assiette Provencale was not busy, but we were fairly late, at 1340. We had grilled poulpe and assiette du pecheur, which were both excellent, as were the house wines. Of special note was the 'soup' portion of the assiette du pecheur. Was happy to have plenty of pain to soak in it. A very pleasant lunch.
Hanna François★★★★★
It was so delicious! And the people working here are the loveliest. It was a warm, sweet atmosphere, and the dishes were really great! The fish soup was amazing! And tbh everything from the starter until the dessert was yummy.
Loved it a lot and highly recommend!

The service is excellent and with a smile. The food is extremely delicious. We didn't have to ask for water for our dog. As already mentioned excellent. This place is a place to visit!

Unassuming place close to the promenade… but wait to start eating!
Please ask the waiter for traditional Provençal options either house wine pairing ; everything is home made.
Expect an explosion of flavors in your mouth!
We couldn’t try all the desserts, have to return for Pavlova and crepe!
Highly recommended hidden ( in plain sight) gem!

I am still completely overwhelmed by this evening ❤️
By the atmosphere. By the warmth. By every single moment. But above all, by the food.
The fish was, without any exaggeration, the best we have ever eaten in our lives. And we are very fortunate to eat in excellent restaurants quite often, including Michelin-starred ones. But tonight was something entirely different.
Every bite was an explosion of flavour. Not overdone, not artificially perfect, but honest, fresh and full of passion. This is exactly how you imagine France should taste. It felt as though we could taste the Côte d’Azur itself.
Some evenings are simply impossible to put into words. This was one of them 🇫🇷🐟🍷

We had a lovely outdoor table at Bistro Les Canailles, and it was such a peaceful, quiet setting—perfect for a relaxing meal. The beef cheeks were absolutely outstanding—tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. While the service wasn't the best, the serene atmosphere and incredible food more than made up for it. Overall, a wonderful dining experience, and I would definitely recommend it for a cozy, delicious getaway. Five stars!

We had a reservation at at 20.30, arrive on the dot and were asked to wait another half hour because our table wasn’t ready (?). Weren’t offered anything to drink or snack. People without a reservation got seated before us. We asked to sit outside when a table became free, bus was told it was reserved for 4. Not much later, the 4 seater got split into 2x2 and 2 guests got seated, while the other table stayed empty. Average food. Very good bread!

My favourite meal in Cannes in a terrific, scenic spot. The octopus is so soft and tender while crisp on the outside. The frog legs are so flavourful (helped me get over my phobia of eating frog legs). And apple tart with foie gras is to die for.

Beautifully cooked octopus, frog legs were delicious, and the duck was perfect. Beautifully cooked French food, and the service was so friendly. Generous portions, worth every penny.

THE BEST FOOD WE HAD IN FRANCE. I wish this restaurant had more business. Everything we ordered was phenomenal especially the curry chicken rice dish I had. Every thing about this place was great. It was authentic and had SO much character. The owners/cooks really are passionate about the food here and you can tell. Definitely a must try in Cannes. Prices were great too!
Danielle★★★★☆
The service was the highlight of our visit. We received a very warm welcome, and the lady serving us was incredibly friendly and cheerful.
The food, however, was quite expensive for what it was. It was good, but it didn’t quite live up to our expectations considering the price.
At the end of the meal, we were treated to a homemade mandarin limoncello made from fruit grown in their own garden, which was a lovely and thoughtful touch.
We’re quite critical when it comes to food, but if you’re looking for a cozy atmosphere and a great spot for people-watching in the heart of Le Suquet, this is definitely worth a visit.

We had a wonderful experience at La Table du Chef. The reservation process was easy, and from the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcome.
This is probably one of the best restaurants we have ever visited. It’s a small, intimate place with an atmosphere that makes you feel as if you’re having dinner at the home of old friends, even if it’s your first visit.
Every dish was absolutely delicious. The menu is outstanding, the wine list is excellent, and everything was prepared and served with great attention to detail. There is honestly nothing to criticize.
A huge thank you to the entire team for such a memorable evening. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Cannes and will definitely be back. Wishing you continued success!
Anar★★★★★
A fantastic dining experience just a short walk from La Croisette. The restaurant is quite small, but that’s part of its charm—it feels cozy, elegant, and relaxed.
We chose the tasting menu, and every course had something memorable. The chilled soup with warm shrimp was an unexpected combination that worked beautifully and was probably my favorite starter. The fish with artichoke purée was another highlight—the purée was just as good as the fish itself. The beef medallion was cooked to perfection. I still can’t tell exactly how they achieved that texture, but it was incredibly tender, almost melting in the mouth. Each sauce served alongside added a different dimension without overpowering the meat.
Dessert was light, fresh, and fruity—the perfect ending after a rich meal.
The wine list is also worth mentioning. For Cannes, the prices are surprisingly reasonable, with plenty of good bottles in the €60–120 range.
Service was excellent throughout the evening: attentive, friendly, and never intrusive. The background playlist of ’80s pop classics created a relaxed atmosphere that made us want to stay longer.
If you’re looking for a place that focuses on quality ingredients, creative cooking, and genuinely good service rather than just the Cannes hype, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit. Highly recommended.

We’ve been coming to Cannes yearly for the past 26 years. It has remained a favourite. It is exceptional in its class. It has the best foie gras and sole muniere! A little restaurant that will not disappoint!

Such a sweet experience. Ordered the scallop and shrimp risotto, was de-li-cious! My boyfriend had fish and he was also so impressed. Shared the apple dessert at the end, also very nice. Respect both wife and "chef" husband and also server who is there to help his friends for a day. Food was so delicious and the service was smooth. If you're looking for a friendly atmosphere and delicious food I highly recommend it.

We had quite a high expectation from this restaurant given its high rating. It is situated near frequent road with passage to underground parking, and area is being reconstructed. We were welcomed by waiter, who did barely speak English, we had difficulties explaining we need extra plate. For ordering, we got only very little help with selection from waiter. We ordered Foi gras for starter, which was fantastic and took short time to prepare. The main dishes (Black Angus rib eye steak, risotto with scallops and prawns and duck breast) were delicious and good, but definitely not amazing.

Staff was friendly and I was sat right away. I spoke in French but they spoke English for the times I needed some help. The filet de boeuf (steak frites) was exceptional. Cooked perfectly, seasoned well, with a wonderful sear, and you could cut it easily with a butter knife. The peppercorn sauce was fantastic as well! Frites could have been a little crispier but otherwise it was a fantastic meal.

A really good, warm restaurant in a lovely side street that has a nice buzz, but that is not as frantic as Rue Hoche.
Very good food and a very good wine list at good prices. Service is very friendly, but with only two staff you have to make allowances when the place is busy- same as any other restaurant in France. (Ask for your bill at same time as your desert).
A good combination for a Summer's evening first is to go to the outside bar of the the Mondrian Hotel for an Apero (you're on the lawn, in the shade, looking down at the Croisette and the sea beyond).
This restaurant is very highly recommended (and the interior looks beautiful for off season visits)

Excellent place and creative cuisine. We just got there by chance, the place opened 10 days ago. Very well decorated, modern and comfortable. We got the Kidney dish and the Dourade, both perfectly executed. as desert we went for the pineapple with lime ice cream, fresh and delicious. Service also amazing, and price is at a very reasonable level for the quality and place. A must go for Cannes.

We’ve visited Bouillon des Artistes several times, and it’s always been a good choice. If you’re looking for a fast, simple, yet charming French bistro in a great location and at an affordable price, this is the place. The portions are perhaps a little on the small side, but if you want to get a taste of French cuisine without spending too much, it’s a great option. The service can be excellent at times and just okay at others, but overall, the concept is well respected. If you’re looking for affordable French cuisine in Cannes, Bouillon des Artistes is definitely worth trying.

We had such a lovely final lunch in Cannes at La Belle Assiette. We came specifically wanting to try some classic French dishes and were not disappointed; the escargots were delicious, the oysters were beautifully fresh, and the duck was a real highlight. Everything was well prepared and thoroughly enjoyable.
What really made the experience exceptional, however, was that we were served by Candice. She was absolutely wonderful, warm, attentive, friendly and genuinely made us feel looked after throughout the meal. Great food can make a restaurant worth visiting, but great service can turn a meal into a memory, and Candice did exactly that. She was honestly one of the key reasons we enjoyed the meal as much as we did.
It was the perfect way for my mum and me to finish our trip to Cannes. Excellent French food, a relaxed atmosphere and truly outstanding hospitality.
A huge thank you to Candice, La Belle Assiette is very lucky to have you! We would happily return on our next visit to Cannes.

Had some great Moules à la crème. While my friends had Beef tartare, Moules Marinières, and Linguini. And the frites served alongside the dishes were hot, crispy and soft on the inside.
And the feeling of having good food on a sunny afternoon outside just made everything seem so much better.
Also, we are grateful that even though we don't understand French, our server was patient with us and tried to explain things with a smile.
A must return place for me.

We were so glad we chose this spot. We had a beautiful evening and the food was amazing. The staff are all really lovely. Great place to also watch the world go by in the street.

Astoux et Brun in Cannes is an exceptional, authentic local seafood institution. While we had to wait quite a while to be seated, the experience was absolutely worth every single minute.
The quality and freshness of the seafood are outstanding:
Fresh Oysters: Served chilled over a generous bed of crushed ice with fresh lemon, incredibly fresh and briny.
Traditional Fish Soup: A rich, deeply flavorful broth accompanied by classic toasted croutons and creamy rouille.
Citrus Seafood Ceviche: Beautifully balanced with vibrant grapefruit and orange segments, red onion, and smooth avocado, offering a clean, refreshing acidity.
Grilled Fish Fillet: Flawlessly cooked and delicate, served with a finely diced vegetable relish, a rich eggplant accompaniment, and a crisp side salad.
The atmosphere is bustling, vibrant, and genuinely local. If you are in Cannes and craving top-tier, unpretentious seafood, this is an absolute must-visit.

We stopped by for oysters and left very happy.
The seafood selection is great, and everything we had tasted super fresh. We shared a variety of oysters, some fries, and a glass of the house wine, which made for a perfect lunch.
The atmosphere is relaxed, while the service is friendly, attentive, and quick. It’s one of those places that does exactly what you hope it will: serve fresh, high-quality seafood without any fuss. The prices are fair, and we had a really enjoyable experience.

An exceptional seafood restaurant in Cannes!
Everything we tried was absolutely delicious. The oysters were incredibly fresh, and the fish was cooked to perfection. Every dish was full of flavor and beautifully presented.
There’s often a queue to get in, which says a lot about how popular this place is. But don’t let that put you off - it’s absolutely worth the wait.
If you’re visiting Cannes, this restaurant is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

Wonderful atmosphere, good food, excellent service, but maybe a little bit overhyped. I arrived with great expectations, waited for about 45 minutes to get a table (not complaining at all!).
The oysters were absolutely magnificent, but the mains were good enough, as they lacked seasoning, but to give credit where credit is due, the fish was soft, tender, and fresh. Just kind of bland. And I know some people prefer it that way, to taste every nuance without compromise, but for the the Couscous de Poissons, the poissons tasted kind of the same. Not saying bad, but just... underwhelming.
To top it all off, I would definitely visit again!
PS, get the Chablis, it is to die for 😉

Excellent seafood and fish restaurant in Cannes. I had the opportunity to enjoy dinner here with my friends at the end of May 2026. Both the monkfish and the oysters were absolutely delicious. The monkfish cost €31, and three oysters were €12.75.
The restaurant staff were very professional and friendly—it was a pleasure to leave a tip for our waitress. The white wine we had with dinner was also very good.
I would definitely visit this place again. Unfortunately, by 7:00 PM on Sunday, they had already run out of mussels, which we had been really looking forward to trying.
The only downside is the long queue, but that simply shows how popular and tasty the food is. In the end, it was absolutely worth the wait.
I’m also attaching photos of the monkfish, oysters, and the snails that were served as an accompaniment to the oysters.
Tips for Choosing the Right Traditional Restaurant
While the list above provides the gold standard for traditional dining, a little local knowledge goes a long way in ensuring your evening is flawless. Cannes operates on a rhythm dictated by the seasons, the festival calendar, and the local market. Understanding these nuances will help you secure the best table, order the right dish, and dine like a true resident rather than a passing visitor.
Book Ahead, Especially During Festivals
Cannes transforms during events like the Film Festival, MIPIM, and the Lions. The best traditional restaurants are often booked out weeks in advance by production companies and locals alike. If you are visiting during these peak times, do not rely on walk-in availability. Call ahead or use online reservation systems to secure your spot, and be prepared for set menus during the busiest weeks.
Follow the Market Schedule
The freshest traditional cooking is dictated by the Forville Market. Restaurants located near the market often change their daily specials based on what fishermen and farmers brought in that morning. If you want the best seafood, plan your main meal for a Thursday through Sunday, as the market is closed on Mondays and the fish selection can be less vibrant on those days.
Look Beyond the Croisette
The closer you get to the red carpet, the more likely you are to pay a premium for the view rather than the food. To find true traditional French fare, climb the winding stairs of Le Suquet or venture into the streets behind the train station. The rent is lower in these areas, which often translates to better value for money and a more authentic, unhurried atmosphere where the focus is squarely on the plate.
Understand the Menu Structure
Traditional French dining often involves the "Formule" or "Menu du Jour." This is typically the best value, offering two or three courses at a fixed price. Do not be afraid to ask what is included, as this is how the chefs showcase their best seasonal produce. If you are dining a la carte, remember that in France, vegetables are often ordered separately as a side dish, not automatically included with your main course.
Dress the Part
While Cannes is generally relaxed during the day, traditional restaurants in the evening often lean toward "smart casual." You do not necessarily need a tuxedo, but leaving the beachwear, flip-flops, and baseball caps at the hotel is respectful of the establishment and the other diners. A light blazer or an elegant dress will help you blend seamlessly into the sophisticated ambiance of a classic French dining room.
The beauty of traditional French dining in Cannes is that it offers a sanctuary from the fast-paced modern world. It is a chance to disconnect from the noise of the boulevards and reconnect with the simple, profound pleasure of a meal made with patience. As you linger over a dessert or a digestif, you begin to understand why the French have enshrined mealtime as a protected part of the day.
Whether you choose a historic bistro with checkered tablecloths or a refined dining room with white linen, you are participating in a legacy that predates the film festival and the tourism boom. It is the taste of the Côte d’Azur as it was meant to be—honest, rich, and unforgettable. Bon appétit.
