As Strasbourg’s reputation for world-class gastronomy continues to grow, so does its vibrant Japanese dining scene. While the city is historically famous for its choucroute and tarte flambée, a new wave of culinary craftsmanship has taken root along the Ill River and in the bustling streets around the Cathedral.
Finding authentic sushi in a landlocked European city once meant compromising on freshness or technique. Today, however, Strasbourg benefits from daily fish deliveries and a generation of chefs who have trained rigorously in the art of Edomae sushi.
Whether you are a local looking for a reliable lunch spot or a visitor seeking a refined dinner after a day of sightseeing, the options can be overwhelming. From intimate omakase counters to trendy fusion bistros, the city offers a diverse range of price points and styles.
The key to a great sushi experience lies not just in the fish, but in the rice, the knife work, and the harmony of the ingredients. This guide focuses on establishments that consistently deliver quality, value, and atmosphere.
We have curated a list that navigates the narrow lanes of Petite France and the modern avenues of the Neustadt to bring you the very best. Each selection has been evaluated for its ingredient sourcing, technical execution, and overall dining experience.
Without further delay, here are the top destinations to satisfy your sushi cravings in the European capital.

The staff here was so friendly! We shared one menu, yet the server was kind enough to bring us both the soup and salad, which was such a nice gesture. It’s a cute, small place, and the sushi was fresh and beautifully presented. I definitely recommend this spot for the high-quality sushi and the wonderful service 🙂

It’s a small place, but the food is amazing, one of the best sushi’s I’ve had. Everything is freshly prepared and made.

A decent place for sushi at a good price. It was not amazing, but good enough to satisfy a craving 🙈 and they have a super delicious algae salad. The staff were very friendly and the service was good.

Great Sushi in a tiny place without any ambiance. Very friendly service. Very fresh and high quality fish. Close to old town.

A sushi restaurant that serves Vietnamese food?!!! I ordered the bo bun here, and it was fantastic! It was even better than I expected, and its flavor reminded me of what I had four years ago when I visited Vietnam. My friend ordered the ravioli soup and also loved it. I will definitely try that dish next time 🥰😘

Fantastic service and alright sushi. The guy working at the front was very nice and accommodating. The sushi was alright, doesn't live up to my high standards that have been set in Japan... There's not much actual fish in the rolls, only more of other ingredients.
The place has very little space for dining in, and feels quite cramped-in.
Christos Moschos★★★★★
Amazing service from the super helpful Daniel, the food was delicious sushi with a little modernised "touch" with flambe technic. We discovered it totally by luck but from the first moment we felt super welcomed. We had a salmon sushi bowl which was delicious and a mix of flambe sushi which was super good. The chef offered us, a la minute Infront of us sushi with goat cheese and honey which was fantastic! We would definitely recommend it and I am sure that we will try it again in our next stop in Strasbourg! The night closed with tea offered by the owner. Thank you so much for your hospitality!

It was absolutely stunning! The sushi is extraordinarily good, the waiter speaks several languages quite well and treats his customers super friendly! The nonalcoholic drinks (Chill) were amazing as well, my friend and I had a great time there!

Possibly the best nigiri I have ever had. The value here is incredible. Super nice staff and high quality sushi for an extremely reasonable price. Go here for sushi in Strasbourg.
N BB★★★☆☆
I was really excited to try given the reviews, the staff is super nice, but I honestly don’t think it’s a 5star place. The sushis are interesting, but taste more like the pre-made ones you get at a gas station, woth loads of artifical sauces rather than rich ingredient flavors. Also the reality is that we ate one kilo of rice with sauces rather than veggies or fish. It’s an ok quick bite to take to the river, but not really a culinary experience. People working there sre however super nice and friendly.

I recently visited this restaurant with my family, and our experience was nothing short of extraordinary. The service was excellent from the moment we walked in — warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming.
The food absolutely amazed me. Every dish was wonderfully prepared, full of flavor, and presented beautifully. The menu offered so many unique and exciting choices that it felt like a culinary adventure.
Our experience here went above and beyond anything I expected. It’s hard to put into words just how great everything was, but I can confidently say this place left a lasting impression on all of us.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for outstanding food, exceptional service, and a memorable dining experience.

Petros PAPAZOGLOU PAPAZOGLAKIS★★★☆☆
In general, it’s a nice sushi restaurant. The place is very clean and the service is fast. I’ve tried their lunch meals a few times and they were all quite good, but my most recent dinner experience wasn’t as positive.
We ordered the biggest sushi assortment they offer, the Kai, but it didn’t meet expectations. Some items were tasty and the presentation was appealing, but others didn’t seem very fresh. For example, the salad was stale, the octopus was fried, and the majority of the sushi pieces were also fried, which was quite disappointing.
The staff was polite, but they removed plates that still had food on them without asking first. Based on my last visit, I can’t give more than 3 stars, though I might give the restaurant another chance.
Alexandre Santiago★★★★★
Amazing food and great service. We felt welcomed and the food is so delicious. For me the best Japanese restaurant in Strasbourg.
Uno Roro★★★★★
This was a really really nice experience.
Food came out fast, tasty, and fresh.
The skewers are a must!
The top 2 skewers were my absolute favourites:
1) chicken meatballs — amazing
2) steak with cheese — amazing
3) chicken — ok
The sushi dragon roll was very tasty, big portion, and well presented.
Poke bowl was large and tasty according to my friend. It comes with a soup and small salad.
Definitely try them out when in the area…they are delicious!

If you go alone, be ready to be treated like an animal. After I waited, they wanted to hide me in some corridor upstars, even though there were free tables downstairs; only they were given to people coming in couples or groups. After they showed me were they wanted to put me, I simply turned around and left the place without saying a word. Never again.
TheQuietMillionaire★★★★★
Had a great dinner there with my family. Food was excellent: they have a blend of Japanese and Chinese dishes to make everyone happy around the table and their salmon is ultra tender. I really recommend. Service was great and there are plenty of parking around. We were staying at the AC Marriott right next door and it was super covenant to walk 30 seconds and eat there.

We went here for dinner as a group of three on our first night of vacation. The staff was incredibly friendly and accomodating as we didn't speak an ounce of french ^^;
I came here before, 2 years ago, and really enjoyed myself, as I love Japanese-Peruvian fusion, however, some of the food was a little underwhelming this time, especially for the prize. The Salmon Maracuja Poke Bowl had basically nothing special about it besides a little dollop of sauce on top, the rest was a regular Poke Bowl. The Salmon Tiradito had the problem that the sweetness clashed with the acidity, but to be fair, that may be up to personal taste.
Overall, the food was tasty, really, but it's too expensive and the fusion isn't really thought through, in my opinion. Would love to come back and maybe see som improvement, though!
Petros PAPAZOGLOU PAPAZOGLAKIS★★☆☆☆
We ordered delivery from this restaurant and the experience was rather disappointing. Although the app initially showed a 'Buy One Get One' offer, the discount was not applied to our final total. Furthermore, while they advertised 'free delivery,' they added a €10 'service fee,' which felt misleading.
Regarding the food, the salmon skewers tasted stale and the sauce lacked freshness. The sushi pieces were significantly smaller than pictured and did not match the menu's presentation. On a positive note, the dumplings were tasty, and the salmon sushi was good, featuring a generous protein-to-rice ratio. However, given the high price and the discrepancies I mentioned, I cannot recommend this place.
Aglaya Krasteva★★★★★
We went in at 9pm when kitchen closes for dining in but the lovely ladies Leia and Nahya accepted to have us and serve. (So only take away after that time I guess ) Food was absolutely delicious, highly recommend the donburi bowls. Definitely will be back for some sushi tasting! Service was super nice, friendly and attentive. Another cosy and delicious gem in Strasbourg. The staff really makes the difference!
Алена Барановская★☆☆☆☆
Most disgusting experience… I ordered Salmon Deluxe and they brought it in 4 minutes after my order. Obviously they did not cook it fresh. Most likely they took it from the fridge and placed on my plate. The taste was not good at all. I think these rolls and sushi’s spent at least 12 hours in the fridge before to be served. I hope they were cooked today. I hope but the chance is not very big. They did not even care to put a little bit of fresh sauce - I think it can be seen from my pictures that it is already not a sauce any more… I do not know why I ate it. I should have complained and did not put this into myself… My initial plan was to have also a cup of coffee and fruit salad, but I was so disappointed that I run from this cafe as soon as possible
Mary Shokry★☆☆☆☆
Bad service and they prepare the food by the microwave. We visited the resturant to eat but were told we can only do take away and not dine in. We said that we would eat quickly but the kids were really hungry so we wanted to dine in. It was 2h until close and there was no reason except "our rules". All the staff was telling us off. Extremely bad service. Will never be back and cannot recommend.

Very good meal, very cheap compared to others, 10/10 service, nice little family run restaurant, cute and relaxing ambiance, nice places to sit inside, took care of my allergies and got me
the food just the way I wanted it (simple and no « decoration »), just the way I wanted, the nigiri were very cheap but still big and delicious, the maki were also cheap, and unlike those store bought sushi‘s, the maki had a great amount of actual fish, and not only rice like sometimes…
10/10, 5 stars, inexpensive but very enjoyable

Phenomenal hidden restaurant and the very best service by wonderful people. We were 6 young adults going for dinner and noticed this small hidden restaurant. The food was of great quality with handmade sushi made in an open kitchen. We were serviced by a couple who I believe own the restaurant and seemed so passionate about their work. I would totally recommend!!! To anyone visiting Strasbourg

An excellent Japanese restaurant with incredibly delicious food and a beautiful atmosphere. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and prepared with great care.

The restaurant was also impressively clean and well-maintained, which added to the overall comfort and quality of the dining experience.

The food was delicious but we were there for over an hour and we heard the same song over and over again which really detracted from our experience. We heard this same piano song no less than 15 times and it was all we could talk about the whole meal lol. However, we loved our food and would definitely go back if they change their playlist to include more than one song.

I don’t think I’m going to visit this place again, the food is great but is not worth the « racial profiling » I experienced, as I was paying my bill after I finished dinner a staff member looked at me and pointed to my face saying « I look like I work as food delivery driver , do u work as food delivery driver. And then points to my face « because of ur face ». », it was completely unnecessary comment to make and unprovoked. I would not return here again.

Good sushi, cosy place and really nice service. A bit disappointed by the California mood, the composition of the mix is not very well explainef so we found ourselved with some canned tune sushi and vegetarian ones. Advice: ask for what’s inside or just pick the sushi/maki yourself

A cute little authentic Japanese restaurant in the heart of Strasbourg! The service is great and the food is delicious! My only issue was that it’s not clearly stated that the tofu ramen dishes are made with fish broth, so you need to specifically ask for the vegan version. The waitress was kind enough to change my dish without any issues.

The service was so kind and they could speak very good english with us. Even tho we had some a little difficult request the waiter took his time and explained everything with a lot of patience. Allergies were considered and our waiter (Georgie) was super kind and considered. The food was great and you could even get your leftovers packed to take home. You got a little entry dish with fried tofu, rice and edamame beans. All in one was it a very nice experience and even for students a very good price.

We managed to book a table of the day. The rating is fully justified, the service was amazing. The restaurant is very cozy. We chose a place to celebrate a birthday and were not mistaken. We took two menus, it is convenient to combine dishes. Serving enough to eat one dish.

The service was very good; the staff was accommodating and took our needs into account (gluten-free or vegetarian; there were also vegan options). The staff was always polite and made sure there were no misunderstandings. The food was prepared quickly. The staff was multilingual; you could order in French as well as English. You could choose your own seat; the space was designed for 4 to a maximum of 6 people.

Hello everyone. I had lunch here, ordered two dishes with rice (chicken and coyotes), and in one of them I found a piece of wood, size 10mm*1mm, which got stuck in my mouth. After I reported this to the waiter, he took this piece and took it to the kitchen. After that, he came and told me that it was parsley, although it was a hard piece of wood or bamboo, quite sharp and small, which could pose a threat to my life. Instead of an apology and a reduction in the bill for lunch - I received an explanation that "it was parsley" - I do not recommend this establishment to anyone and I will never come here again.

Really pleasant experience. The staff there was so nice and helpful. I would say this

We had a dinner with our two children on a weekday during our holiday in Strasbourg. The restaurant was almost full but the service was excellent. The menu has many dishes to choose from and it also offers a kids menu, making it extremely family friendly. We really liked the atmosphere and the decoration of the restaurant. The staff was really friendly and helplul. The cute keyring gift at the end is a small kind gesture, but we loved it.

Japanese restaurant next to the train station, very convenient to get here. The restaurant is beautifully decorated in Japanese style. I feel like I am eating in Japan. Staffs are very friendly.
The appetizer is very good, I like it.
Ramen is nothing special.
The taiyaki dessert seems to be frozen and just needs to be reheated to serve customers. This dessert is not worth the price at all.

When I review my photos today, I saw the photo taken for the food when I was at lunch in this restaurant. The water in the left cup contained fresh lemon. Tips for Choosing the Right Sushi Spot
To ensure your meal is as memorable as the city’s stunning architecture, it helps to know what to look for before you sit down. Sushi dining in Strasbourg varies wildly from fast-casual counters to high-end gastronomy, and understanding the nuances of the menu can significantly enhance your experience. Whether you are a purist or an adventurer, these practical guidelines will help you navigate the local scene like a pro.
1. Look for the "Rice First" Philosophy
In authentic sushi, the rice is just as important as the fish. When reading reviews or looking at photos, pay attention to the texture and gloss of the shari (rice). A great sushi chef will season the rice with the perfect balance of vinegar, sugar, and salt, and serve it slightly warm or at room temperature, never cold from a fridge.
2. Check for Daily Specials
The best sushi restaurants in Strasbourg receive fresh deliveries multiple times a week. A menu that is static and never changes might indicate reliance on frozen stock. Look for chalkboards or inserts featuring "Catch of the Day" or seasonal fish like kinmedai (golden eye snapper) or sanma (Pacific saury). Ordering off this list guarantees peak freshness.
3. Don’t Be Afraid of the Counter
If the restaurant offers a counter seat, take it. Sitting at the bar allows you to observe the chef’s technique and hygiene standards. It also ensures your sushi goes from the chef’s hand to your plate in seconds, preventing the nori (seaweed) from getting chewy and the rice from drying out.
4. Understand the Difference Between Sushi and "French Sushi"
Strasbourg has a unique hybrid style that often incorporates local ingredients like foie gras, cream cheese, or tropical fruits. While these can be delicious and fun, they are not traditional. If you want to judge a restaurant’s skill, order the basics first—a simple maguro (tuna) nigiri or a salmon roll—before moving on to the more elaborate house specials.
5. Consider the Timing
The French dine later than many other cultures, but sushi restaurants often have distinct service windows. Lunch menus (formules) usually offer the best value for money, often including miso soup and a salad. For dinner, reservations are highly recommended, especially on weekends, as the top spots in the city center fill up quickly with both tourists and locals.
6. Sake and Pairing Options
A telltale sign of a dedicated sushi establishment is its beverage list. While beer and Alsatian wine are always available, a restaurant that offers a curated selection of Junmai or Ginjo sake demonstrates a commitment to the full Japanese dining experience. Don’t hesitate to ask the staff for pairing recommendations.
Exploring the sushi scene in Strasbourg is a delightful contrast to the region’s hearty traditional fare. It offers a lighter, refined alternative that highlights the city’s international character and its access to premium global ingredients.
Whether you find yourself in a minimalist dining room near the European Parliament or a cozy hideaway in the Krutenau district, the pursuit of the perfect bite is a worthy adventure. Enjoy the journey, and bon appétit—or as they say in Japan, itadakimasu.
