12 Best Japanese Restaurants in Strasbourg

Strasbourg’s culinary identity is often defined by its Alsatian roots—think choucroute, tarte flambée, and rivers of crisp white wine. Yet, beyond the timber-framed facades of Petite France, a dynamic Asian food scene has taken hold, offering a delicious counterpoint to the region’s hearty fare. Among these, Japanese cuisine holds a special place, prized for its precision, freshness, and ability to satisfy both delicate and robust appetites.

For locals and travelers alike, the search for authentic ramen, pristine sushi, or comforting katsu curry has become a delightful urban treasure hunt. The city is home to a surprising density of Japanese-owned izakayas and contemporary fusion spots that rival those in much larger European capitals. Navigating this landscape requires knowing which spots prioritize true technique over simplified takeout clichés.

This guide is designed to cut through the noise and lead you directly to the most memorable meals the city has to offer. Whether you are seeking a quiet corner for a solo bowl of noodles or a lively counter to watch sushi masters at work, Strasbourg’s Japanese dining scene delivers on multiple levels. We have evaluated these establishments based on ingredient quality, authenticity of preparation, atmosphere, and consistency of service.

From hidden gems tucked away on side streets near the university to bustling mainstays in the city center, the options are varied and exciting. The best restaurants here understand that Japanese food is about seasonality and respect for the product, principles that align beautifully with the French approach to gastronomy. It is this cross-cultural dialogue that makes dining out in Strasbourg so uniquely rewarding.

If you are ready to move past generic "Asian fusion" and dive deep into specific regional Japanese cooking, you have come to the right place. Your palate is about to embark on a journey that spans the snowy island of Hokkaido to the bustling markets of Tokyo, all without leaving the Grand Est. Prepare to discover why these tables are consistently booked out by discerning food lovers.

Here are the standout Japanese restaurants currently defining the scene in Strasbourg:

A cute little authentic Japanese restaurant in the heart of Strasbourg! The service is great and the food is delicious! My only issue was that it’s not clearly stated that the tofu ramen dishes are made with fish broth, so you need to specifically ask for the vegan version. The waitress was kind enough to change my dish without any issues.

Truly genuin Japanese food right in the heart of Strasbourg. We had a fantastic time enjoying great food and an authentic atmosphere. I would highly recommend it.

The service was so kind and they could speak very good english with us. Even tho we had some a little difficult request the waiter took his time and explained everything with a lot of patience. Allergies were considered and our waiter (Georgie) was super kind and considered. The food was great and you could even get your leftovers packed to take home. You got a little entry dish with fried tofu, rice and edamame beans. All in one was it a very nice experience and even for students a very good price.

We managed to book a table of the day. The rating is fully justified, the service was amazing. The restaurant is very cozy. We chose a place to celebrate a birthday and were not mistaken. We took two menus, it is convenient to combine dishes. Serving enough to eat one dish.

The service was very good; the staff was accommodating and took our needs into account (gluten-free or vegetarian; there were also vegan options). The staff was always polite and made sure there were no misunderstandings. The food was prepared quickly. The staff was multilingual; you could order in French as well as English. You could choose your own seat; the space was designed for 4 to a maximum of 6 people. Greetings to Georgie

Hello everyone. I had lunch here, ordered two dishes with rice (chicken and coyotes), and in one of them I found a piece of wood, size 10mm*1mm, which got stuck in my mouth. After I reported this to the waiter, he took this piece and took it to the kitchen. After that, he came and told me that it was parsley, although it was a hard piece of wood or bamboo, quite sharp and small, which could pose a threat to my life. Instead of an apology and a reduction in the bill for lunch - I received an explanation that "it was parsley" - I do not recommend this establishment to anyone and I will never come here again.

Really pleasant experience. The staff there was so nice and helpful. I would say this restaurant is what comes the closest to Japanese food in Strasbourg? I liked the decorations, very authentic. The food was great although the selection to choose from isn’t huge. The bill was reasonable, I’d definitely come again.

We had a dinner with our two children on a weekday during our holiday in Strasbourg. The restaurant was almost full but the service was excellent. The menu has many dishes to choose from and it also offers a kids menu, making it extremely family friendly. We really liked the atmosphere and the decoration of the restaurant. The staff was really friendly and helplul. The cute keyring gift at the end is a small kind gesture, but we loved it.
Laelly★★★★★
The atmosphere in the restaurant is really pleasant and relaxed, with friendly, very helpful and kind staff. The food is very tasty, the portions are generous — we truly had a great meal and you definitely won't leave hungry. A lovely place with a great vibe, we’ll definitely come back again.

Japanese restaurant next to the train station, very convenient to get here. The restaurant is beautifully decorated in Japanese style. I feel like I am eating in Japan. Staffs are very friendly. The appetizer is very good, I like it. Ramen is nothing special. The taiyaki dessert seems to be frozen and just needs to be reheated to serve customers. This dessert is not worth the price at all.

Super Japanese restaurant! The noodles had a unique touch, maintained excellent quality and authenticity. The soup is absolutely amazing, especially during the winter it’s warm, comforting, and full of rich flavors. You can really feel that everything is homemade with care and attention to detail. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a delicious and satisfying meal. Highly recommended!

The service is good and staff are friendly. But the food falls below expectation as a Japanese restaurant. We order 2 ramens, and takoyaki. The texture of ramen is the prepackaged noodle you get from supermarket, it taste very soft and might be in the water for too long, and the broth is the biggest issue, very salty and tasted artificial. The meat is the only okay part. The Takoyaki has just a very tiny bit of Octopus, but it is crispy overall so it is alright. Maybe I expected too much on the food given the high rating.
T. O.★☆☆☆☆
I hate to be harsh because the staff were actually kind, but as a Japanese person, I struggled to call this ramen. The broth was overwhelmingly salty, and the noodles were so overcooked they had lost all texture. The katsu on top also felt like a very dry patty. Honestly, I would have been more satisfied with a simple cup of instant noodles from a supermarket. The interior is also full of unofficial-looking One Piece decor. I really hope they can improve the food quality to match the friendliness of the service.

The staff is very friendly. The seasoning is too salty to our taste, after asking the staff, they said it is adjusted to European standard. So if you used to eat Asian food or coming from Asian, you should ask the kitchen to pit the sauce aside. Otherwise the fried tempura is good and the rice is well cooked. Both beef and chicken is a bit overcooked. We will appreciate if it's a bit more tender.

What a surprise to discover this restaurant, very cute decoration, friendly staff, food is delicious, love the curry chicken! the price is very lovely considering the location is right in the centre. I highly recommended this restaurant!
Sarah L★★★★☆
At the beginning, the female server refused to take us (2adults +2 children ) ariund 14:30, she said that children eat slower, we won’t finish before 15:00(closing time ). In the meantime, she welcomed other couple. There are a big about 8 people just settled down as well. I was very shocked she refuse us with this reason in France. We went back to this restaurant at 18:00. This Japanese food restaurant owner is Chinese(like many Japanese restaurants in France , they are not own by Japanese) The price and are acceptable. The fried chicken was good. The quantity of the fried chicken curry is quite a lot.

For me best asian restaurant in Strasbourg, food was fantastic especially Amakara chicken and mochi with matcha ice cream. They have also interesting matcha soft drinks.

The food was extremely tasty and quite cheap and the staff was friendly. Even though the place was packed with clients, the noise was not overwhelming and we had a lovely time. We recommend 100%, best Japanese restaurant we've found in Strasbourg so far!

We had a long dinner here on the final day of our trip, the ambience was cosy and friendly, and made us very comfortable; plus it was not too busy. We particularly enjoyed the sashimi and soba.

An excellent Japanese restaurant with incredibly delicious food and a beautiful atmosphere. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and prepared with great care. The staff were exceptionally friendly, attentive, and welcoming throughout our visit, making the experience even more enjoyable. The restaurant was also impressively clean and well-maintained, which added to the overall comfort and quality of the dining experience. Highly recommended – we would happily come back again!

The food was delicious but we were there for over an hour and we heard the same song over and over again which really detracted from our experience. We heard this same piano song no less than 15 times and it was all we could talk about the whole meal lol. However, we loved our food and would definitely go back if they change their playlist to include more than one song.

I don’t think I’m going to visit this place again, the food is great but is not worth the « racial profiling » I experienced, as I was paying my bill after I finished dinner a staff member looked at me and pointed to my face saying « I look like I work as food delivery driver , do u work as food delivery driver. And then points to my face « because of ur face ». », it was completely unnecessary comment to make and unprovoked. I would not return here again.

In general, it’s a nice sushi restaurant. The place is very clean and the service is fast. I’ve tried their lunch meals a few times and they were all quite good, but my most recent dinner experience wasn’t as positive. We ordered the biggest sushi assortment they offer, the Kai, but it didn’t meet expectations. Some items were tasty and the presentation was appealing, but others didn’t seem very fresh. For example, the salad was stale, the octopus was fried, and the majority of the sushi pieces were also fried, which was quite disappointing. The staff was polite, but they removed plates that still had food on them without asking first. Based on my last visit, I can’t give more than 3 stars, though I might give the restaurant another chance.
Alexandre Santiago★★★★★
Amazing food and great service. We felt welcomed and the food is so delicious. For me the best Japanese restaurant in Strasbourg.

This was a really really nice experience. Food came out fast, tasty, and fresh. The skewers are a must! The top 2 skewers were my absolute favourites: 1) chicken meatballs — amazing 2) steak with cheese — amazing 3) chicken — ok The sushi dragon roll was very tasty, big portion, and well presented. Poke bowl was large and tasty according to my friend. It comes with a soup and small salad. Definitely try them out when in the area…they are delicious!

If you go alone, be ready to be treated like an animal. After I waited, they wanted to hide me in some corridor upstars, even though there were free tables downstairs; only they were given to people coming in couples or groups. After they showed me were they wanted to put me, I simply turned around and left the place without saying a word. Never again.
TheQuietMillionaire★★★★★
Had a great dinner there with my family. Food was excellent: they have a blend of Japanese and Chinese dishes to make everyone happy around the table and their salmon is ultra tender. I really recommend. Service was great and there are plenty of parking around. We were staying at the AC Marriott right next door and it was super covenant to walk 30 seconds and eat there.

Authentic and delicate Japanese food. The chef well prepared the food with heart. The miso soup is very delicious with mushrooms and spring onions. The lunch menu is small / medium portion but very delicious. I’m glad to see such an excellent restaurant in Strasbourg - it provides Japanese food with better quality than most of Japanese restaurants in Paris. This restaurant will be our new cantine.

Slightly expensive for the price, especially considering that none of the dishes included fish. The portions were a bit small. I was a little disappointed given the glowing reviews online.

A wonderful evening at a delightful Japanese restaurant. Yuki, at 4 Boulevard de Nancy in Strasbourg. Far from the typical sushi clichés and over-the-top decorations. A zen-like, understated space where you take off your shoes to eat. Seeing the tables, you might think you'll be itching to get up after 10 minutes. But instead, you sit down as if you were at a regular table. The underside of the table is heated, and the blanket on your lap is warm—pure bliss! We discovered no fewer than twenty different sakes, to be savored like wine. The Gyotzku white wine was marvelous. We highly recommend this restaurant; it's a real gem. The owner cooks and serves with the delicacy and kindness one expects from a Japanese restaurant.

We were there for lunch. And overall it was a pleasant experience and we would like to go back! Service was quick and good. There are other options as well, but the main idea is "a volonte'", so for lunch it's 19.90euros and dinner 29.90euros per person, all you can eat (drink excluded). You can order up to 4 plates per person every 15 minutes. Everything is very easy through a tablet. So, the quality of the food is good enough. Tasty, big variety. We enjoyed especially a few sushi rolls like the dragon, the pad Thai, salmon nigiri, cheese popcorn... and some others! It's worth it.

As everyone says, this is the best Japanese restaurant in Strasbourg (Alsace?) Real Japanese cuisine by Japanese chef and japan service. Lunch menu is only 15 euros and if you see the quality of food, you cannot fine the same things anywhere else. Their homemade Tofu is really soft and delicious, I cannot find even in Japan. I personally prefer less source to taste well the Tofu itself. The dessert is also very creative and delicious : glace au sesame noir is very good. Glace au miso blanc is very original. If you like spot and sweet taste, you must try it! If you really want to try the real Japanese food, here is the place! You must make a reservation to make sure that you have the place especially for dinner.

I'd heard great things about this place, especially from a Japanese friend (which carries more weight). This place delivered and then some! The server was so sweet, careful and attentive, even the chef greeted us when we came in. The food was exceptional, authentic and well worth the price. I would definitely recommend and can easily say this was the best Japanese food I've had in Strasbourg.
Ronald Foreman★★★★★
Overall good experience with a focus on freshness. One odd thing though, we did not order dessert, yet we were brought dessert and charged for it. Did I miss something in translation?
Paula “LiveYourWay”★★★★★
Exquisite food. The best Japanese food that I've had. The portions are small but enough and well balanced. You have to reserve a table before because the place is quite small. I had tofu with vegetables, aburi sushi, miso soup, grilled salmon, and a type of panna cotta made of black sesame, a speciality of the chef. This gem is outside the center of Strasbourg in the town of Schiltigheim. I will definitely go back.
Emanuela Giardina★★★★☆
This is not the typical sushi restaurant where you can eat crazy amount of sushi. This is a small, cute Japanese restaurant where you can enjoy the typical Japanese Cousine in small portions. The service is very good(the waiter was really professional) , and the food was incredibly delicious and good quality. I eat a lot of fish but let me tell you: here I ate the best salmon of my life. It was melting in my mouth. We had sake, water, 2 entries, 2 main dishes (+2 little soups that came included w the dishes) and we were pretty full at the end. We paid 48€. They accept credit card, and I recommend to book it in advance. I loved it, and I will come back. I would have put 5 stars if it wasn't for the fact that the restaurant is not well ventilated and all the smells of the kitchen was on our clothes. But for the rest it looked very clean and welcoming.

If zero stars were an option, I would give them without hesitation. The food was poor overall. The service, was completely horrible, service of the waitress was awful- she stated that she is not the chef and therefore does not know what is in the dishes. I thought it’s essential for a server to understand the menu and accurately communicate what is being served. She can ask if she wasn’t sure instead of being argumentative, dismissive, and unwilling to take responsibility. She created a situation that made patrons felt unsafe. Serving an allergen without warning is not just careless—it is dangerous! Overall, the service was disrespectful, unprofessional, and frustrating.

Osaka Strasbourg is a hidden gem in the heart of the city, offering an authentic Japanese dining experience. From the moment we walked in, the warm and welcoming atmosphere made us feel right at home. The staff was incredibly attentive, and a special thanks goes to Naoko, our wonderful host, whose kindness and excellent service made our dinner truly memorable. We tried a variety of dishes, each one delicious, beautifully presented, and expertly prepared. The fresh, authentic flavors showcased the best of Japanese cuisine. Whether sushi, or hot dishes, everything was served with care and precision. If you’re looking for a taste of Japan in Strasbourg, Osaka Strasbourg is a must-visit. Excellent Japanese food, a wide selection, great value for money, friendly service, and staff who speak some English; the tonkatsu and sashimi are particularly recommended.

Very nice Japanese restaurant with reasonable prices (especially taking into account the situation in the very city centre of Strasbourg close to the Homme du Fer). Good vegetarian options (e.g. fried tofu with rice, soy-peanut sauce and salad) also available. Friendly and efficiet services, so you don't have to spend ages for lunch.
Cordee Skywalker★★★☆☆
Very chic and modern brasserie with plenty of room inside and outside. Excellent service that left nothing to desire. However, the Nigiri and Sashimi were nothing special. Badly cut with tasteless rice. The soup and salad were really good though, so maybe the chef just had an off day. They offer a lot of cooked and fried modern Japanese food as well. Good selection of drinks.

The staff here was so friendly! We shared one menu, yet the server was kind enough to bring us both the soup and salad, which was such a nice gesture. It’s a cute, small place, and the sushi was fresh and beautifully presented. I definitely recommend this spot for the high-quality sushi and the wonderful service 🙂

It’s a small place, but the food is amazing, one of the best sushi’s I’ve had. Everything is freshly prepared and made.

A decent place for sushi at a good price. It was not amazing, but good enough to satisfy a craving 🙈 and they have a super delicious algae salad. The staff were very friendly and the service was good.

Great Sushi in a tiny place without any ambiance. Very friendly service. Very fresh and high quality fish. Close to old town.

A sushi restaurant that serves Vietnamese food?!!! I ordered the bo bun here, and it was fantastic! It was even better than I expected, and its flavor reminded me of what I had four years ago when I visited Vietnam. My friend ordered the ravioli soup and also loved it. I will definitely try that dish next time 🥰😘

How to Choose the Right Japanese Restaurant for Your Mood

Selecting the right venue depends heavily on your craving, your budget, and the dining experience you wish to have. Japanese cuisine is highly segmented; a perfect sushi bar might not serve the best ramen, and an excellent yakitori joint might not be ideal for a quiet business meeting. Understanding the subtle differences between these formats will ensure you leave satisfied and eager to return.

Identify Your Primary Craving
Before you book a table, decide what you actually want to eat. If you are dreaming of vinegared rice and raw fish, focus your search on restaurants that specialize in sushi and sashimi rather than generalists. If you want a hot, rich bowl of broth, look for a dedicated ramen-ya where the noodles are often made in-house and the broth simmered for hours.

Consider the Time of Day
Many traditional Japanese eateries in Strasbourg offer specific lunch sets, known as "teishoku," which provide excellent value compared to dinner menus. If you want to experience a high-end omakase without the high-end price tag, visiting during the midday service is often the smartest strategy.

Check the Chef’s Background
Authenticity often starts in the kitchen. Look for menus or websites that mention the chef’s training or origin. A chef who has spent time working in Tokyo or Osaka will likely bring a level of discipline and nuance to the plate that is difficult to replicate without that specific cultural immersion.

Look for Seasonal Specials
A chalkboard or printed insert featuring seasonal fish or vegetables is a hallmark of a serious Japanese kitchen. Restaurants that change their menu based on what is available at the market are prioritizing freshness over convenience. If you see items like hotaru ika (firefly squid) in spring or matsutake mushrooms in autumn, you have found a keeper.

Assess the Atmosphere
Do you need a romantic date spot or a quick counter seat? Some of the best ramen shops in Strasbourg are designed for high turnover and fast eating, which is perfect for a solo lunch but less ideal for a long, lingering conversation. Conversely, an izakaya setting encourages sharing plates and ordering drinks, which is best enjoyed with a group of friends.

Don’t Skip the Sides
A restaurant’s skill is often revealed in the small details. Before judging a place solely on its sushi rolls, try the miso soup, the agedashi tofu, or the pickled vegetables. These foundational dishes demonstrate a kitchen’s understanding of dashi, fermentation, and texture—the true building blocks of Japanese cooking.

Strasbourg’s Japanese food landscape is a testament to the city’s ability to embrace global flavors while maintaining a standard of culinary excellence. Whether you are a long-time resident looking to switch up your weekend routine or a visitor seeking a break from Alsatian staples, these restaurants offer a satisfying and health-conscious alternative. The dedication to craft found in these kitchens is palpable, turning a simple meal into a cultural experience.

As the city continues to evolve, the standard for Japanese cuisine here only gets higher. By choosing to support restaurants that value authenticity and quality over shortcuts, you are encouraging a vibrant food scene that benefits everyone. So, grab your chopsticks, bring your appetite, and enjoy the rich, umami-filled world that Strasbourg has to offer.
