15 Best Rooftop Cafes in Marseille

As the sun dips toward the Mediterranean and the limestone facades of Marseille glow in shades of honey and rose, the city reveals a secret that locals hold dear: the best way to experience the Phocaean City is from above. Marseille is a sprawling, chaotic, and utterly magnetic port town, a place where the urban grit meets the azure calm of the sea.

While the streets buzz with the energy of scooters and market vendors, the city’s elevated terraces offer a serene escape, providing a panoramic stage for the city’s daily theatre. The concept of the rooftop bar or café has evolved significantly in Marseille over the last decade. No longer reserved for luxury hotels and fine dining, the city’s vertical landscape is now dotted with a diverse array of elevated havens.

From hidden garden terraces tucked behind unassuming doors to sleek, contemporary perches overlooking the Vieux-Port, there is a vantage point for every mood and budget. These spaces are not just about the drinks; they are architectural observatories that frame the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, the Fort Saint-Jean, and the distant Frioul islands in a way that ground-level terraces simply cannot.

Seeking out a rooftop café here is an exercise in understanding the city’s unique topography. Because Marseille is built on a series of hills cascading down to the water, many terraces offer unexpected sightlines that interweave the urban with the natural. You might find yourself sipping a spritz while looking over a sea of terracotta rooftops, or enjoying a cold-pressed juice while watching ferries depart for Corsica and Algiers.

The elevation offers a necessary detachment, allowing you to appreciate the city’s beauty without the interruption of traffic or the jostle of the crowded markets below. This guide is curated for those who wish to elevate their experience in Marseille, both literally and figuratively. We have scoured the seven hills and the bustling port to identify spaces that offer more than just a view.

We looked for quality of service, the authenticity of the atmosphere, the creativity of the beverage menu, and that intangible feeling of escapism that defines a truly great rooftop. Whether you are a digital nomad looking for a scenic workspace or a traveler seeking the perfect golden hour photograph, this list has something for you.

In curating this selection, we prioritized venues that demonstrate consistency and a genuine understanding of Marseille’s identity. We have included iconic institutions that have defined the city’s skyline for years, as well as new concepts that are pushing the boundaries of mixology and design.

Each entry has been evaluated for its ability to provide a distinct perspective—some look directly into the heart of the Old Port, while others offer a rare glimpse into the residential calm of the city’s eastern neighborhoods. Below, you will find a definitive list of the fifteen best rooftop cafés in Marseille.

This list is designed to be your trusted companion, whether you are planning a romantic evening, a casual afternoon with friends, or a solitary moment of reflection. We have included practical details and context to help you choose the perfect spot for your specific desires, ensuring that your time above the city is as memorable as the city itself.

Very disappointing experience. The staff were unnecessarily rude and dismissive, which made what should have been a pleasant visit quite uncomfortable. Customer service needs significant improvement, specially the bouncers at the door, they are so rude they should be ashamed of themselves, I will never return and strongly recommend that no one bothers with this place.

We were planning to have dinner and dance afterwards. On that special day was the 4th Anniversary of the Club and we had to pay an extra entrance fee on top of the reservation. We were not informed about that beforehand. There was not much choice of food, the quality was average and we even had to pick up the food ourselves four stairs downstairs although there were enough staff people. The party and music later were good (especially the drummer) but the experience in total was disappointing.

Burgers at 20 euros that date from the previous service, piled up and then headed on an oven. When I told the "cook" it was cold and dry he reheated for 1 minute (no joking) and gave it back without any words, not even a smile. Do not come ! It will ruin your happy concert vibes !

A nice place to party with your friends or family. The food is too expensive for what you get. The music is good but not the best (it’s only my opinion, as it’s a favorite place for some of my friends), and they have themed parties.

We asked for a place on the terrace. The waiter told us to take a seat outside but then ignored us for the rest of the time until we left again.

Successful solar eclipse, but the evening's organization was a complete disaster… Let's start with the positives, it'll be quick: the food was high quality and the brazier-cooked food was good. The view of the sea, with the added bonus of the solar eclipse, was magnificent. Well, on that last point, it's hard to praise the organizers: the Mediterranean was already there before they were. For the rest, the evening felt more like an immersive, resourceful experience. Upon arrival: a virtually invisible welcome and no explanation of how the place worked. Several places to order drinks or food, but clearly the idea was to figure out for yourself which was what. We were then directed to our "table" for six people: a tiny high table, with a 90-year-old in our group, for whom no stool had been provided. The waiter's response when we asked for a solution: "Try to find a stool somewhere." “Thank you for the treasure hunt, an unannounced activity included in the price. For food, a new challenge awaited: we headed to the bar, where we had to wait about 30 minutes before a waitress deigned to take our order. We even had to point out that she could simply take it, give us the little vibrating device, and let us go back to enjoying the evening instead of camping out in front of the bar. As for the kebabs: we were told there was a 40-minute wait, mainly because the fire pit wasn't even hot at the start of the evening. A rather audacious detail for an event where the fire pit is supposed to be one of the main draws. Regarding drinks, another interesting concept: it was impossible to get a carafe of water. Only bottled water was available for purchase. We asked for simple glasses of water, even from another bar: refused. Free hydration was clearly not part of the concept. And we were far from the only ones to discover the joys of this organization.” Several groups around us were visibly unhappy. A special mention goes to a group of 12 who arrived late in the evening with a reservation. The waiter, clearly unable to find their table, opted for a particularly creative solution: asking another group, who had been there for about an hour and a half, to leave so they could get their table, then seating the new arrivals… again, with an insufficient number of stools. In short: good food, a beautiful setting, but absolutely bizarre organization—which, for an eclipse evening, was actually quite fitting. With a clear welcome, furniture appropriate for the number of reservations, a fire pit lit on time, an organized ordering system, and the rather revolutionary possibility of getting a glass of water, the place could be very pleasant. As it stood, we mostly felt like we were paying to participate in a life-sized escape room: finding our table, our stool, our bar, our meal, and possibly some water before the end of the evening.

Why 4 and not 5? 1. We ordered drinks and were asked if we wanted still or sparkling water. We said still thinking it meant tap water since we didn’t even ask for any but we were charged for it and barely even drank it, so it felt like a waste of money and maybe like a way to increase the bill? 2. We noticed that all tables were served bread except ours, we thought they’d bring us too but never did and were too shy to ask after almost finishing our meals. 3. It’s a relatively expensive restaurant but the portions are on the smaller side. We were still a bit hungry after eating. The bread would have definitely helped here!! The positives: the steak and its sauce were amazing!! Highly recommended! The Purple Rain cocktail was great and the gnocchi was good. The service was fantastic, and the sunset view and colors of the sky were magical. We booked in advance to make sure we got there in time for sunset. A week earlier we tried without a reservation and there were no seats left so I recommend making a reservation.

Incredible place for lunch. 7 stories above the city with views of the old port and Notre Dame. This place stays cool even in super hot heat waves because of the cool breeze. Food with great. Drinks were good too. Mediterranean cuisine. I got the octopus lunch. Make sure not to miss the small glass door along the street with small writing with Ciel on the door. Very nondiscreet. The other reviews say to make a reservation but I got seated as a walk in.

Amazing views of marseille. Cool concept to have lunch on the top floor (7th floor by elevator). Great service. Mille feuille was spectacular and pasta Arabiata was great too. Too bad the osso-buco was not cooked long enough and was not fall off the bone.

I visited twice during my stay in Marseille! It is a lovely spot with amazing views of the city (and sunset) and a great menu. We first visited for drinks and they accommodated us w/out reservations - thank goodness! We had a blast. The decor around the entrance elevator is very interesting and the rich blue elevator doors ate striking! Conversation pieces for sure! Our next visit, we made reservations to catch golden hour sunset - it was packed but we were well tended to! I ordered the risotto which was delicious. We also ordered this amazing pistachio dessert that Inhave no idea how to pronounce (see photo), give it a try! Make a reservation ASAP & watch the sunset, you will not be disappointed!

Simply perfect! We had a great evening here, we hope we can return, the pasta, octopus, carpaccio, olives, cheese and pizza were very good. Service was outstanding.

We came for dinner with a reservation and were quite disappointed by the place. Firstly, we waited 25 minutes by the moment we were seated, only to get the menus. We then had to wait another 30 minutes just to receive our drinks, for which we had to call a waiter at least 4-5 times and it seemed really difficult to catch their attention. The food arrived extremely late as well. The food was ok (we tried fish soup and gigot d’agneau) but truly nothing exceptional and felt like it did not match the prices. The staff were +- nice and kind to us but the service is truly problematic. Especially for this price-range as compared to other restaurants in the area. The view is really nice and there’s a beautiful terrace on the rooftop outside.
Ivan K.★★★★★
It was good to spend Friday evening in the good atmosphere and have dinner while it is better to have dinner inside and not at the terrace. Entrance is via the cinema - there is an elevator going to the rooftop. Views are impressive. Food was good generally and was brought rapidly. May recommend for a visit while area outside is not the best and it should be considered as well.

One of the most lovely rooftop terraces in the centre of Marseille with complete rooftops and steeple panoramic views. The staff are super friendly and the menu is chic and delicious. Really nice wine selection and cocktails on offer and a beautiful decorate art-house interior to make your whole experience feel luxurious and charming.

Les Réformés Rooftop in Marseille is an absolute gem and a must-visit for anyone seeking a memorable dining experience in the city. The view from the rooftop is simply unmatched—you’re treated to a stunning panorama of Marseille’s iconic skyline, with the beautiful Notre-Dame de la Garde in the distance, all while enjoying a relaxed, open-air ambiance. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit, especially as the sun sets, casting a warm glow over the city. The wine selection was good, offering a variety of excellent local and international options, all at very reasonable prices. Whether you’re a casual wine drinker or a connoisseur, you’ll appreciate the quality and value here. Each glass paired beautifully with the meal, adding to the overall experience. Dinner was equally delightful. The menu showcased a mix of regional flavors and fresh ingredients, executed with care and creativity. Every dish we tried was flavorful and well-prepared, reflecting the restaurant’s attention to detail and dedication to quality. It’s clear they take pride in offering not just a meal but a full experience for their guests. The combination of delicious food, excellent wine, and that breathtaking view makes Les Réformés Rooftop a top destination in Marseille. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this is one spot you won’t want to miss. Highly recommended for a perfect evening out!

Small restaurant in the center of Marseille with its own rooftop which has beautiful views. The restaurant feels very comfy and has a good atmosphere. We had an unplanned diner there with my spouse and we were happily surprised with the food and the menu. Yes it is a bit pricy but worth it ; overall an enjoyable evening and service was top notch!

I'm forgetting about this place. Getting to or from the Comedy Club in the evening isn't without its risks, given the insecurity in the square before the entrance and the stairs at Porte d'Aix when you go back down. As for the show, the host shouts way too loudly into his microphone, but you can't help but smile at the comedians who follow. As for the food, the dishes are nicely presented, but the bill reflects that. Nothing special. We don't even know where to post this review: the 180? The Rooftop? 🤷🏻 Just in case, I'm posting it on both.

A hidden gem in Marseille with breathtaking views of the sea, Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica, and the Major Cathedral. It dominates Marseille. The tapas are delicious and the DJs are talented (DJ Djel from Fonky Family was playing when I went). Free entry before 7 pm is a great deal. Perfect for after-work drinks, a get-together with friends, or a date.
ANNE MARIE BARTHELEMY★☆☆☆☆
Magnificent view, stunning rooftop… but the rest is practically an art form. We'd barely sat down when we ordered the cheapest bottle of white wine on the menu: sold out. Promising for a very first day. There were four of us: the waiter brought only one glass. We had to ask him to come back several times to get the other three. The same scenario played out with the cutlery, then the bread… it was as if we had to win each item in a treasure hunt. The €29 platter arrived without cutlery or bread, of course. And despite the restaurant being far from full, we constantly had to go back to the bar to ask for something. In the end, you're mainly paying for the view: €10 per person just to access the rooftop, prices that are far too high for such disorganized service. It's a shame, because the place has potential… but as it stands, it's clearly more pleasant to look at than to experience. Avoid it if you're hoping for a relaxing evening.

Hidden gem!! Beautiful view of the city and the Mediterranean Lunch with 2 colleagues. The food culture in France is superb, and this restaurant is no exception. Straight forward, very well prepared food. Options for everybody in regards of meat, fish or vegan - short but complete daily menu. Service in perfect English, very professional and charming. Owner - very friendly and helpful. It's a bit tucked away on a rooftop (It's in the name though) and you need to pass a college/school lobby but absolutely worth it. The service and welcome were excellent 😊 We had a great time and I would recommend it. The only negative point: the price of the tapas. They were good, but for frozen products, it's still excessive. I have a good appetite and my wife is average, and we spent 95 euros without having dessert. That was 2 or 3 tapas per person, 2 beers, and a glass of wine. Apart from that, we had a very good time; the servers were very welcoming, attentive, and responsive. Thank you to everyone.

This restaurant-bar is located on the second floor in a building across the street from the pier, near the Office of Tourism. The cozy restaurant had a nice bar, and ship/maritime decorations. It almost felt like you were in an 1880s living room. Our server was friendly and we had a nice lunch and a rose that was a a great complement to the meal. Most of us ordered the caesar salad, which was tasty but I prefer less dressing. This was my second caesar salad in France and both times, the lettuce was drenched in dressing. I am starting to think that, this is the way the French like their caesar salads, so I didn't want to take a star off for not American-izing their salad, and also because the dressing was tasty but just too much of it, for my taste. Views were beautiful, service was great.

Probably the coolest bar in all of southern France. Super friendly staff - very chill. The ceviche we ate was probably the best on our 2 week trip. Great views. Not crowded.

Outstanding experience from beginning to end. Everything was meticulously organized, spotless, and carefully arranged, which instantly fostered a cozy and inviting environment. The staff was courteous, professional, and attentive, always prepared to assist and address any inquiries. The overall quality genuinely surpassed my expectations, and it’s evident that they are committed to delivering excellent service. I particularly valued the meticulous attention to detail and the seamless, stress-free process. It’s not always simple to discover a venue that consistently provides such a favorable experience. I would wholeheartedly recommend this establishment to anyone seeking dependability and quality, and I eagerly anticipate returning in the future.

Frenchly Honest★★★★★
A Frenchly Honest review, as told by MaisOui Le Frenchy. The rooftop bar is among the most reliable disappointments in modern hospitality. The formula is well established: procure a view of sufficient grandeur, install some ambient lighting and a cocktail menu inflated to reflect the altitude, and allow the panorama to do all the work while the staff does precisely nothing. One learns, after a certain number of such establishments, to lower one's expectations to a level that cannot be further lowered. And then, occasionally, one returns. I have been to Le Dantès Skylounge before. I came back — which, for those who know me, is not a gesture I make lightly. A cynic does not repeat an experience unless the first has given him genuine reason. It had. Le Dantès, perched above Marseille with the entirety of the Vieux-Port spread below — the marina's masts, the ancient stones of Fort Saint-Jean, the city climbing into the hills under a sky that has no business being that blue — does not follow the formula. And on this visit, as on the last, it proved the point. It was busy when we arrived. This is the first test of any establishment worth considering, and many fail it before a single word is spoken. I stepped outside to assess the terrace. I was greeted immediately. Not eventually. Not once a staff member had concluded a conversation of no discernible importance. Immediately. A table would be ready shortly — and shortly, here, meant shortly. I returned inside to collect my party. Before I had said a single word to them, a staff member had already approached to inquire whether they needed anything. Attentiveness, it appears, requires no instruction at Le Dantès. One wishes the same could be said of the Capian Bar at the InterContinental Hôtel-Dieu, a short walk away, where the view of the same Vieux-Port comes with prices that would make a Parisian blush and service that would make him feel considerably better about Paris. We sat. Blankets appeared — offered without theatre, accepted with gratitude. An indoor table was proposed, should we prefer shelter from the wind. We did not. The Vieux-Port in the golden hour does not invite retreat. Now — the drinks. Yes, they are priced accordingly. Let us not pretend otherwise. An espresso martini, an Irish coffee, a third cocktail whose name escapes me but whose execution most certainly did not — none of these will be confused with budget refreshments. But here is what is included in that price, and what so many establishments charge for without delivering: quality ingredients, properly made. A terrace that is genuinely clean. A view that is actually yours to enjoy, because the staff has ensured you are settled, warm, and looked after. At the Capian Bar, one pays a comparable sum and is left to wonder what, precisely, one is paying for. What Le Dantès understands — and what its more self-satisfied neighbours conspicuously do not — is that a view is a backdrop, not a service. The Vieux-Port will always be magnificent. The question is whether anyone is paying attention behind the bar. Here, they are. Again.
Alex Henderson★★★★☆
This place boasts a truly exceptional view, that's what places it above other places (quite literally!) Overlooking Marseille harbour and the forts, and you can even catch the sunset from the back terrace. The cocktails, whilst pretty good, are overly expensive. They're clearly trying hard but for that price they should be absolutely stunning. And sadly the service was inattentive and slow. But the view gives it 4 stars.

We went here for a birthday treat. The views are great, expensive but our experience was not so good as we were told, like children, we could not allowed to change our allocated seats, we were there at 5pm and the place was empty! A previous reviewer had said great views but it wasn’t worth it and I would have to agree.
Christine★★★★★
Lovely view of the port, great way to end a long day of walking and enjoying the sun. This rooftop bar is inside the hotel and there’s an elevator all the way up. The signature cocktails are delicious and come with little snacks like olives and nuts. The drinks are a bit pricy but you pay for the vibe and the view. The waiters are also very nice. Definitely recommend coming for sunset!

This was a terrible experience! Unaccomodating front desk staff (on several occasions), an exchange of drugs and the use of drugs right outside my hotel room window, noise from the very heavily populated beach just below the windows, and a disappointing overall disinterest in the well being of the guests. I requested their quietest room and when I got there my room was adjacent to their popular rooftop bar. Further, there was scheduled the following night a private event at this bar. I went to the front desk and asked for a different room and the women there said there was nothing available in my "type" of room, although their web site happened to show ample availability. There were no concessions at all. No offer to comp a meal or even a glass of wine. It is absolutely not 4 or 5 star. It's really poorly run. Also, sidenote, my room had a warning that the filter was dirty and needed cleaning/replacing. Just not a good experience, super disappointed. Do not go here!!

Honestly, one of the best rooftop parties I have been to since a while in France. The food was amazing we had the Tuna melt and the Croq . A bottle of good white wine for 35€! And the cocktail was big and not that expensive. The view is exceptional I recommend arriving there before sunset to enjoy it.

We had bought tickets prior and for absolutely no reason at all we were denied at the gate. Bouncer was very rude and never even gave us a chance to go in even know we had tickets on our phone.

Underwhelming service for a place that wants to signal classy ambience. Plastic glasses. Couple of bartenders who had no skill in or knowledge of cocktails. Strangely (and no-one is to blame for this), it was even too hot while in the streets below there was a pleasant breeze from the sea. Standing space interferes inefficiently with any serious dancing possibility which given a fine DJ would be a nice option for just posing clients.
Rafael “Pretty Honest Reviews” Restrepo★★★☆☆
Security was chill and there was little wait to enter and purchase a ticket. If there was a dress code, it was pretty lax. We saw plenty of people in with t-shirts and shorts. Maybe it’s just against open toed shoes? If it is, it’s for your safety. It gets crowded and the people don’t have good etiquette. Bar lines are very long, and per usual, people don’t stand in line properly. Despite all of this, we still had a good time.

We got there randomly looking for a place to take some drinks and we got into a awesome night at the terrace with dj black coffee in live (25e entry ticket). Totally recommended. In addition, great views to the sunset from the rooftop

We attended wedding mingle event here. Commenting on private event point of view, the staff went all and beyond with all the organizing. Outstanding service, good with english as that is not so popular skillset in south of france so it was easy to organize together. Great venue for about 40-80 people events. Seemed a really nice drink / tapas place in general 👍

The rooftop is a must visit, incredible vibe that makes you want to stay there for hours and the food and coffee are delicious too

Perfect spot for a quick lunch or takeaway. Effortlessly stylish with a great vibe, and the food never disappoints. I love the little terrace upstairs — ideal for catching some sun and slowing down for a moment. A new favorite in the neighborhood!

The InterContinental Marseille – Hôtel Dieu is a five-star establishment. It says so everywhere. The building is magnificent — an 18th-century former hospital inaugurated by Napoleon III, no less. I arrived with my expectations intact. They did not survive the terrace. Perhaps I am being particular. I have been called worse. But when an establishment charges five-star prices and displays five stars above its door, it has entered into an implicit agreement with its guests. I hold up my end. I pay the bill without complaint. In return, I expect the stars to mean something. Had there been no stars, no white-glove pretensions — I would not have bothered. But there are. And so here we are. We were seated on the terrace of Le Capian. And what a terrace it is — in the architectural sense, certainly. In every other sense, winter came, deposited its full inventory of leaves, debris and grime, and nobody thought to object. Something had occupied a section of the floor for the cold months — a planter, a piece of furniture, one can only speculate. It had since been removed. What had not been removed was the evidence of its long residency: grease stains, dark outlines pressed into the stone, the biography of an object that sat undisturbed for months. One might invoke Marseille's famously brisk Mistral winds as a mitigating circumstance. One would be wrong. Any establishment of this classification, in this city, is intimately acquainted with the Mistral. It is not a surprise. It is a forecast. Maintaining a terrace in these conditions is not exceptional hospitality — it is Tuesday. The service rose to the occasion — by which I mean it did not rise at all. Our waitress passed our table with great purpose, that purpose being the table directly behind us. We waited. We continued to wait. One wonders — and I raise this as a man who dresses for his own comfort and has never dressed to impress — whether one's reception here is subject to a quiet visual assessment. I have encountered this philosophy at other addresses of similar standing. It is not more charming the second time. When hospitality finally arrived, it took the form of a bowl of olives. Just olives. No nuts. No accompaniments. At every five-star bar I have visited, the welcome snack has at minimum suggested someone gave it a thought. Here, Le Capian has placed the entire weight of its hospitality onto a single olive. It is, I concede, a very good olive. And yet, at these prices, the snack is not a courtesy — it is a statement. A bowl of solitary olives makes an establishment of this ranking appear, to use a word one rarely associates with five stars, cheap. The following day I visited Le Dantès Skylounge at the Sofitel Marseille Vieux-Port — also five stars. The terrace was clean. The staff acknowledged us. Snacks appeared without negotiation. None of this is remarkable. None of it should be. But that story deserves its own review. Le Capian was entirely content to let the architecture do the talking — and to let the rest of us sit quietly on a dirty terrace, waiting to be noticed. A Frenchly Honest review, as told by MaisOui Le Frenchy.

When I’m paying 22€ for a cocktail I expect something special, and excellent service. Sadly I received neither. I wanted to go and visit this bar because I’d heard they had a gorgeous terrace with fabulous views. I was somewhat underwhelmed by the terrace furniture - more B&Q Garden Centre than 5* Hotel! But the view was lovely. I got there around 4pm and the terrace wasn’t busy, but a lot of the tables were dirty. I managed to find a clean table, sat down, and waited. And waited. And waited… Eventually I caught the eye of a waitress and she brought me the menu. Then I waited a good 15 minutes before getting the attention of another waiter, who took my order. Around another 15 minutes later my cocktail arrived, and during that time I saw several people approach the bar to ask where their orders were as they’d been waiting since before I arrived. I have to admit I was also somewhat underwhelmed with my cocktail. It was ok, but not worth 22€. Coming from London I’m not adverse to paying £25 for a cocktail in a high-end bar, but with that you’ll usually get ‘nibbles’ and water, neither of these were offered at Capian. After finishing my drink I sat there for some time waiting for the staff to notice and ask if I wanted another drink. Nobody did. In the end I wanted to pay and leave - but no one wanted to take my money either! Sadly disappointing experience. The toilets were nice though!

The service is one of the worst i have ever experienced. We stayed 45 min until someone came to us and another hour until they brought the order. This is unacceptable! We ask them for several times to take care but nothing . The location is one of the best in Marseille but very bad the experience.
Lucy Finlay★★☆☆☆
Beautiful surroundings but the price to service ratio is a little bit rubbish. Ignored by the bar staff whole time, who also got the order wrong, and took 10 mins to bring it over (wasn't busy). However when we stood up to leave, a lady was over IMMEDIATELY to make sure to remind us to pay. Poor considering a drink was €20!

Staying at the property and wanted to love the bar. Did not happen. Terrace definitely has a beautiful view of the Basilica and the Old Port. With that said, we found a dirty table and chairs upon seating. Menus were delivered promptly, but the service from that point was disappointingly slow and uninterested. Had to go to the bar to pay the bill as we could not get a check. Terrace was a bit busy, so tried a second time the next evening and due to rain we were seated inside. Music was a singer with an Ipad of accompaniment. Nice singer, but not the level of entertainment I would expect in a bar of this type. Service was again very poor. Slow to come, slow to serve, and then non-existent from that point forward. Also noted some tables received "nibbles" while others did not. We did the first night, but not the second. Drinks are expensive and seemed overpriced in our opinion. I think the bottom line is a beautiful location with tremendous opportunity, but Intercontinental has missed out with the overall package they are delivery.

Terrasse is amazing and near the old port, so perfect for tourist on foot. The building is not so welcoming from outside and the terrace at the top is simple but welcoming with great views. The food is the reason why you would go there. It was fantastic!

Great rooftop restaurant which, when we visited on a Friday evening, used every inch to accommodate guests. The DJ played great music all night which enhanced the atmosphere. One fairly major drawback - the majority of people smoked or vaped. We sled to move table but our new location was just as bad. If you don’t like sitting half a metre away from a smoker, this great place is not for you.

A place where locals visit, food is really good. Music gets lout adter sometime in the night and atmosphere turns to a club.

The view/location is wonderful. The food was not as fine as the price would let on. Everything was very well presented.

Tips for Enjoying Marseille’s Rooftop Café Scene

To truly maximize your experience in Marseille’s elevated venues, it helps to understand the local rhythm and etiquette. The city operates on a Mediterranean clock that differs significantly from Northern Europe or North America.

Knowing when to arrive, what to order, and how to navigate the city’s unique geography will ensure that your time spent above the rooftops is seamless and enjoyable. Here are some essential insights to guide your exploration.

1). Time your visit with the “Golden Hour”

Marseille faces west, which means the sunsets over the sea are spectacular. However, this also means these venues are in high demand from about 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM during the summer months. If you want a prime seat for the sunset, arrive at least 45 minutes early. Alternatively, visit in the late afternoon (4:00 PM – 6:00 PM) for a quieter, sun-drenched experience without the rush.

2). Understand the “Service Continu” concept

Unlike many cities where kitchens close between lunch and dinner, many cafés in Marseille offer continuous service. This is excellent news for rooftop seekers, as you can often arrive at odd hours (like 3:00 PM) and still order a full meal or a substantial snack. This flexibility makes it easier to avoid the lunch rush while still enjoying a high-quality culinary offering with your view.

3). Dress for the breeze and the stairs

Marseille is the windiest city in France, primarily due to the famous Mistral wind. Even on a hot summer day, a rooftop terrace can feel significantly cooler and breezier than the street level. Bring a light layer, even if the forecast looks warm. Furthermore, many historic buildings housing these cafés have narrow staircases or older elevators; comfortable footwear is essential for navigating the last few flights to the top.

4). Embrace the local apéritif culture

While coffee and pastries are wonderful in the morning, the true magic of Marseille’s rooftops happens during the “apéro” hour. Instead of defaulting to a standard beer or wine, try a local specialty. A glass of chilled Rosé de Provence is a classic choice, but for a true taste of Marseille, order a “Pastis” (served with water and ice) or a “Picon Bière” (beer mixed with a bitter orange liqueur). These drinks are intrinsically linked to the region’s identity.

5). Look beyond the Vieux-Port

While the Old Port is undeniably beautiful, some of the most charming rooftop terraces are located in the up-and-coming neighborhoods like La Joliette, Le Panier, or the Prado beaches. Venturing slightly off the main tourist track often rewards you with lower prices, more authentic interactions with locals, and unique angles of the city that you won’t find on a postcard.

As the evening lights begin to flicker on across the Vieux-Port and the sound of the gulls fades into the night, you will understand why Marseille’s rooftops hold such a special place in the hearts of its residents. These terraces are more than just places to eat and drink; they are sanctuaries where the pace of the city slows down, allowing you to breathe in the salt air and appreciate the vastness of the Mediterranean horizon.

The memory of a sunset viewed from these heights, with a cold glass in hand, is the very essence of the Provençal art de vivre. Whether you choose a hidden garden in the historic center or a sleek perch in a modern district, the vertical journey offers a reward that is uniquely Marseille.

It is a city of contrasts—gritty yet beautiful, ancient yet modern—and seeing it from above allows you to hold all of these contradictions in a single glance. So, take the elevator, climb the stairs, and raise a glass to the Phocaean City. The view, much like the city itself, is unforgettable.
