Marseille often feels like a city built from stone, but its true lungs are the green spaces and shaded terraces that offer escape from the Mediterranean sun. From historic châteaux to rugged coastal trails, the city’s parks are as diverse as its population.
Whether you are a local looking for a new running route or a visitor needing a quiet moment between sightseeing, there is a patch of green waiting for you. Understanding the layout of Marseille is key to enjoying its outdoor spaces.
Unlike flat northern cities, Marseille is a basin surrounded by hills, which means many of its best parks offer dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views of the sea. You will find that the most rewarding gardens often require a bit of a climb, but the fresh air and the scent of pine trees make the effort worthwhile.
The climate here dictates how these spaces are used. In the summer, locals flock to parks early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the heat, while winter offers a lush, crisp atmosphere perfect for long walks. Many of the gardens feature drought-resistant Mediterranean flora, including olive trees, agaves, and Aleppo pines, which thrive in the limestone soil.
For families, these parks are essential infrastructure, offering playgrounds, carousels, and wide lawns for picnics. For history buffs, they serve as open-air museums, housing 19th-century follies, remnants of royal estates, and modern art installations. The city has invested heavily in maintaining these spaces, ensuring they remain safe and accessible for everyone.
Accessibility varies by location, but the public transport network—including the metro, tram, and bus lines—connects most of the major sites. Many parks also feature on-site cafés or snack bars, allowing you to make a full afternoon of your visit without needing to pack a heavy bag.
Below is a curated list of the most remarkable parks and gardens the city has to offer. Each entry has been selected for its unique character, historical significance, or sheer beauty, ensuring you find the perfect spot to match your mood.

The architecture is absolutely breathtaking, elegant, grand, and full of artistic details. The fountains and sculptures are especially stunning — every statue seems to tell a story. Walking through the palace and gardens felt peaceful and inspiring at the same time.
The combination of history, art, and beautiful scenery makes this place unforgettable. If you visit Marseille, this is definitely a place you should not miss.
Geoff Aldrich★★★★☆
Interesting park, the front waterfall and fountain are very well maintained and beautiful but further into the park you can see signs of neglect. It was a welcome break from our touring that day regardless.
Wukong★★★★★
Easily one of the most magnificent landmarks in Marseille. Even if you don't plan on going inside the museums, the monumental fountain and colonnades are a masterpiece of architecture and a perfect backdrop for photography.
The scale of the "chateau d'eau" is breathtaking, and the way the water cascades down is incredibly peaceful. Behind the palace, the Parc Longchamp is a beautiful green escape—ideal for a relaxed stroll or just to sit and people-watch. It’s well-maintained, full of history, and offers a much-needed breath of fresh air.
Whether you’re a history buff, an art lover, or just looking for a stunning place to walk, this is an essential stop. Truly a jewel of the city!

Great monument in Marseille... One of the main things what to see in this city... When you walk around such a great feeling... Beautiful architecture, big waterfall, big park, come, look and enjoy... Inside you have two museums one with pictures and one with animals, both are amazing... Sometimes it's very crowded and I recommend to come early in the morning, and take nice pictures and videos... All recommendations for visit and enjoy if you are in Marseille
Claudia★★★★★
An experience not to be missed. The most magnificant fountain and park I ever laid eyes on. It was difficult to leave this place. I wanted to know more about it and it seems that the water flowing through this fountain comes from a river whereby the water served the population of Marseille. I could sit, listen and gaze at this masterpiece forever. A must on your Marseille bucket list. Tip: take the Tram line 2 straight to the Palais Longchamp stop and wait to be surprised as you step off the tram to get faced with stunning wonder.

Although we really appreciated this fabulous green lung of Marseille, we were disappointed in the lack of maintenance. No matter, it is one of the nicest parks we visited in this region. A definite visit!

Spending time here was one of the best thing that we did yesterday. The breeze, the almosphere etc, all was worth it before. The we later ended up at the nearby beach (Plage Du Prado).

Cute condensations of different climate zones / themes. Sadly some zones are still restricted for public visits. Still worth a visit.

Beautiful gardens. Cant wait to return during other parts of the Season when the plants blossom.
Very friendly staff at the entrance.

We went with my 5 and 10 year old sons, and they enjoyed it very much. I must admit that I was surprised that they did. The people working there were very welcoming and helpful. On our second visit, the garden looked a bit less glamorous since it was not quite full of autumn colours but, nevertheless, still very enjoyable. It's always a pleasure to visit the gardens as they bring a sens of inner peace within oneself.
LS Sheldon★★★★★
This botanic garden is small, but has some real gems. There are some exquisite specimen trees, and shrubs that I haven’t seen another gardens. You can walk through this garden in about an hour or less. There’s some shade, but in the summer visiting early or bringing heart is recommended.

The monument and fountains are impressive, worth the visit to see. Unfortunately the gardens behind are neglected, obviously not been maintained for several years. The locals use the area for running and recreation. The zoo has been closed for many years but there are still cages with model animals in them, a bit too macabre for me.

On of the most memorable nature trips of my life. We took a boat tour from the port of Marseille and we could not believe our eyes, every corner was filled with the most amazing views. A must do when in Marseille.

Parc national des Calanques is an amazing place for hiking! I went in the end of March, weather was perfect - not too hot, not too cold, clear sky. Always good to have shorts in the backpack in case it's warmer, also an extra layer in case it's cold and windy - the Mistral wind can be brutal. Hiking from Cassis to Callelongue via GR98 in 1 day is totally doable if you're fit for it and start early. Amazing experience, I'm so glad I went! 😊

Beautiful.
But 4 starts as there are no toilets!
So many people attending, there should be public toilets at the entrance.
Luckily there is the Uni close by!

It was a nice visit in a very elongated park with unfortunately few shady spots. It was also slightly unkept and therefore a little less enjoyable. There's also the ossibility of having a little bite at a shady pavillion eatery mid way through the park. Don't forget to arrive first at the entry of the fountain of hope. A tram stop from line 3 is adjacent to the park.
Psychic Reader Love&Career★★★★★
I adore this park! Thank you to the architects and landscapists who constructed this lovely oasis in Marseille! Thank you so much! The convenience of the new tram line stopping right in front of the entrance is amazing. Also, it has more than enough spaces to have some work out privacy, as well as seating to just relax. 10/10. Parks are so important for us nature folks, so I am.here multiple times a week for workouts or just grounding. Marseille really does attract top professional talent.

Its a long open space park, so can be quite windy. You can see Mountains at afar. The tree statue at the entrance. Nice atmosphere

A sky full of gold over Marseille! 🎆 Managed to grab a spot on the grass at Parc Émile Duclaux inside Le Pharo to watch this spectacular display.
If you look closely at the right side of the frame, you can see our beloved "Bonne Mère" (Notre-Dame de la Garde) illuminated on her hill, watching over the city while the sky lights up with massive, crackling golden willows! There is nothing quite like the atmosphere of a summer night in the South of France. 🇫🇷🌊

Nice park with great views of the Old Port. I did not go inside, but walked around. There was some public restrooms though not the most beautiful. Worth a visit if walking around the old port area.

Nice park where people go jogging, kids play soccer and tourists roam around take-in the wonderful view. Entry is through the smaller gate doors on the right and left of the big gate. The Pharo Palace, one of the buildings in the park, faces the entry to the Old Port of Marseille, displays some beautiful classical features . It seems to be a venue for conferences.

A nice park in the grounds of a mansion built in 1865, which is not open to the public, the grounds are accessible.
It has lovely views over the sea to the islands.
It has a few nice walking trails, ideal for running, walking, strolling or simply relaxing.
There are lots of interesting flora to explore in the park.
Stumbled on this park on the long walk from le Vieux Port to Prophets Beach, a nice place to stop en route.
I would highly recommend a visit if in the area.

Overall, a decent park on the hill...mostly, beautiful views over the city of Marseille. A little under maintained which is a shame because this little park has loads of potential. Note: the entrance could be steep on one side. The other entrance (near to the restaurant Sepia) is completely on the opposite end and may be easier to access.
Daan★★★★☆
The steep climb through well-tended green spaces is worth it, even on hot days. The view is beautiful and the park is the perfect place to cool off and recharge your batteries. Unfortunately, there is no flat area to lie on, but there are benches and many shady spots under trees. There is also a public toilet, but this is not recommended.

You need to be a mountain goat to climb it, couldn't find a flat area anywhere, do not go unless you are very fit. P.S. it has another tiny drawback, wild boar, which if you got into a head2head with one, there's only one winner, so climbing skills might also be fairly essential, choose the very flat & pleasant BORELY PARC instead

A very clean park where dogs aren't allowed and for a very good reason it's full of aromatic plants from the Mediterranean area. I'm not sure if you're allowed to pick some. It's very tempting! It's a very safe place for children as it's enclosed and has a good playground. Surprisingly, it was very quiet during weekdays. There are some beautiful fruit trees that were blooming as early as February.

A relatively new park, laid out on the site of a large block of demolished old houses. The park is beautifully planned, with garden plants - almonds, quince, aromatic herbs, and medicinal herbs like motherwort. Conveniently laid out are the paths for walking and running. Interestingly inscribed in the garden landscape are sections of old stone fences, they divide the park into cozy areas for picnics, playgrounds, and even a place to watch grazing horses.

Nice park and if you walk a little bit into it, you will arrive to the start of the hiking trail of the calanques.

One of the best parks in Marseille. Green trees smell amazing. I wish there were less dogs.
Tom★★★★★
The château isn't open to the public. However, the park has a lot to offer. And sometimes shows from the nearby Théâtre des Calanques are given to the public. Its history is worth doing a bit of homework and digging into it. It's also a good meeting point. There are many dogs being walked there, so be careful with young children. Dogs mean a certain let go, so watch your steps!

Very cool park
Practical Tips for Visiting Marseille’s Parks
To make the most of your time outdoors, it helps to understand a few local customs and practical considerations before you set out. The following tips will help you navigate the city’s green spaces like a resident rather than a tourist, ensuring you stay comfortable and safe.
1). Bring Water and Sun Protection
Unlike Northern European parks, many of Marseille’s green spaces have limited shaded areas and few drinking fountains. Always carry a refillable water bottle, especially between June and September, and apply high-SPF sunscreen even if you are only planning a short walk.
2). Check Opening Hours in Advance
Marseille operates a mixed system for its parks. While some large spaces like the Parc Borély are open 24/7, smaller neighborhood gardens often close at dusk or during periods of high wind (Mistral). Always verify the specific hours for your destination to avoid finding locked gates.
3). Wear Proper Footwear
Because the city is built on hills, many parks feature gravel paths, uneven stone steps, and steep inclines. Flip-flops are a recipe for twisted ankles. Opt for sneakers or hiking sandals with good grip, especially if you plan to visit the coastal calanques or hilltop gardens.
4). Respect the “No Lawn” Rule in Some Areas
In France, it is common for ornamental lawns to be strictly decorative. If you see a sign reading “Pelouse Interdite” (Lawn Prohibited), do not sit or walk on the grass. Look for designated picnic areas or benches instead, as fines can be issued for ignoring these rules.
5). Plan Around the Mistral
The Mistral is a strong, cold wind that sweeps through the Rhône valley and hits Marseille hard. While it clears the sky to a brilliant blue, it can make picnics miserable. Check the wind forecast; if the Mistral is blowing, choose a sheltered garden like the Jardin de la Colline Puget rather than an exposed coastal path.
6). Bring Cash for Small Cafés
While most major attractions accept credit cards, the small kiosks and ice cream stands inside parks sometimes have minimum spend limits or technical issues with card machines. Keeping a few euros in your pocket ensures you can grab a coffee or a cold drink without hassle.
Marseille’s relationship with nature is raw and authentic, much like the city itself. Whether you are watching the sunset from a rocky outcrop or listening to the cicadas in a manicured French garden, these spaces offer a vital counterbalance to the urban energy. They are places where the city slows down, takes a breath, and invites you to do the same.
So pack a bag, grab your sunglasses, and explore the green side of the Phocaean City. You might arrive for the history and the bouillabaisse, but you will likely leave with a newfound appreciation for the wild and cultivated beauty that grows between the limestone and the sea.
