From the sun-drenched terraces of the Old Port to the hidden vaulted cellars of Le Panier, Marseille’s drinking culture is as diverse and vibrant as the city itself. France’s oldest city does not do things by half measures, and its bar scene is a testament to that energy.
Whether you are looking for a meticulously crafted cocktail, a natural wine from the surrounding Provence vineyards, or a simple pastis while watching the fishing boats bob in the harbor, the Phocaean City has a counter stool with your name on it.
The geography of Marseille dictates its nightlife. The districts are distinct, each offering a different rhythm and atmosphere. You might find yourself sipping a spritz in a bohemian square in Cours Julien one moment, then navigating the narrow, laundry-strung alleyways of the Panier to find a secret speakeasy the next.
Understanding this layout is key to unlocking the best experiences the city has to offer, moving beyond the tourist traps to find where the real Marseillais unwind. This guide is curated for the discerning traveler and the curious local alike.
It is not simply a list of places that serve alcohol; it is a collection of destinations that offer atmosphere, history, and quality. We have prioritized venues that source locally, mix with precision, or simply offer an unbeatable view of the Mediterranean. You will find everything from high-energy craft beer halls to quiet, romantic wine bars perfect for a first date.
Marseille is a port city, which means it has always been a melting pot of influences. This is reflected in the glass. You are just as likely to find a bar specializing in rare Caribbean rums as you are a traditional Provençal cave à vin. The common thread is a distinct lack of pretension; Marseille is a working-class city at heart, and even its most elegant establishments maintain a warm, welcoming, and often boisterous atmosphere.
The climate also plays a significant role in how the city drinks. For most of the year, the action spills out onto the pavement. Terrace culture is paramount, and securing a spot on a sunny plaza for an apéro is a sacred ritual. In the cooler months, the scene shifts indoors to moody, dimly lit spaces where the Mistral wind is kept at bay by good conversation and strong spirits.
To help you navigate this sprawling and exciting landscape, we have compiled a definitive list of the essential stops. These are the places that define the current drinking culture of Marseille, ranging from iconic institutions to innovative newcomers that are pushing the boundaries of mixology.

Great after hours Bar open till 4.30 am. Just a short walk off the main strip.
Amazing staff and team, with table service.
Great prices with a pint at €5 each.
Thanks for having us. Highly recommended venue to visit. Relax and unwind.
Small bar inside, main area is outside. With security guard.
Didn't have any food. No food served when I visited from 8pm till 4.30am.
Good spot.

This place certainly is unique! It's nothing like any of the sanitised places on the main square. Worth visiting just to see the eclectic posters, signs, and hangings. They have a good range of drinks though, some vegetarian options on a small menu, and the staff are lovely.

We had a great experience! The atmosphere in the bar is chill and the music not too loud. It really feels like someone’s old living room 😍 the cocktails were delicious and the staff is dressed like in the era. We enjoyed ourselves. Its also fun to get into the place, very magical! Def recommend and will come back next season to try new cocktails 🍹
ITP★★★☆☆
Cute, quaint and a fun experience. Nice atmosphere and attentive staff. Lighting could be better. Many were using their phone lights to read the menu. The cocktails were elaborate and nice, but very overpriced and it was obvious that they kept pushing the upsell; hence a standard menu of cocktails was not offered but should be. Great to experience once if you’re into cocktails.

What a fun speakeasy!!! From the minute you make the reservation, the wonderful & efficient experience begins. We have many speakeasies in Seattle, WA USA, and as far as I know, none compare to the immersion experience we had at this speakeasy. The staff is so friendly and welcoming, our server Ludwig was very kind and knowledgeable, and the drinks were so delicious! We got the Queen's Park Swizzle and the Lud Way to start with and the Jungle Bird to complete our experience. We highly recommend this delightful establishment to both visitors to and locals from Marseille. Santé!

Excellent cocktails, fun theme, great staff. Sit at the bar and the barman will teach you about your cocktail and that really elevated the experience. Merci

This is a secret bar for which need to make a reservation from the website and get a password. We just told the bartender what kind of cocktail we like and left the rest to him and he did not disappoint. The cocktail were really good, they were just as we described and the little welcome cocktail too was a nice little touch.

The service in this place is definitely something. Attentive and fast, is probably the highlight, together with a interesting menu with plenty of options. Prices are high but they close the kitchen very late (around 23.30 if I remember correctly) and this is another huge plus.
Bill Strzempek★★☆☆☆
A few of us found a table outside after the Top14 Semi finals and after waiting forever outside tried to finally get drinks inside -- there was a fun friendly very gay crowd all fighting for attention of the single bartendar but this place is completely mismanaged, the guy was overwhelmed and cranky and throwing hissy fits. What were they thinking to only have one bartender on a huge rugby weekend??

Nice view. There are several options of tapas, including tapas to share. Good prices for drinks during happy hour. The view could be better by removing some stuffs in the outside, blocking the amazing view of region.

We had a delightful afternoon at The Shamrock, basking in the serene water view and sunshine while savoring a couple of drinks. Seeing the round Guinness sign while walking down a street is always a comfort, particularly north of the old port where I’ve only encountered two of them. I would expect the Guinness to be on tap, and lovingly poured into a proper Guinness pint glass. To my disappointment, the Guinness came from cans, the same ones (it seems) that you could buy at a supermarket with the nitro balls inside. The bartender / manager assured me that it was the same thing as Guinness on draft and he proceeded to use this machine that held the glass at an angle and slowly straightened itself. Like a hand-pour it waited a bit before topping off the glass.
Unfortunately, the glass that the bar used was not a proper (Imperial) pint glass but a French 50 cL glass. So, oddly, the bartender had to pull the glass out of the machine and put in another glass for the remaining 6.8 cL “excess.” It was the strangest thing. I thought why not just use pint glasses, particularly in an establishment that has the round “Guinness” sign hung prominently outside the bar? And the machine itself looked like it was meant to hold a classic Guinness glass (with the top half tapering out into an almost goblet-like form). Beyond this strange encounter with the pouring of my favorite beer, I felt that the price was a bit steep for “Happy Hour” at 9 EUR (with the excess thrown out, no less).
The bar itself was nice. It was a proper bar with hooks underneath for bags, and had a nice vibe. Other “bars” that I’ve seen in Marseille are a bit “fake-ish” and are meant to serve from rather than a place to sit properly next to. It had a bit of that corporate look that the other bars and restaurants along this stretch of the port has and feels like it caters more to tourists and workers in the area vs. a “local” with a bit more personality (for this you would have to go to Cours Ju).
The manager and staff were friendly and attentive to everyone that came in. Although I think they probably thought I was odd because I was questioning their little Guinness machine. Music was good (from rock to rockabilly and blues) but veered a bit at one point to country, which the manager, wisely, pulled back from.
It was okay and I will come again. It may never happen in La Joliette but I’m still hoping for a perfect pour this side of the port.

Friendly staff, nice beers, limited but decent selection of US of A bourbons and whiskey’s.
Stays open late enough with a quirky mix of rock and euro trash music (adds to the vibe).

Note, this is an update to a review/experience from 2018.
Walked across town only to be turned away at the door! “Not possible” said the door man rudely! Nothing was posted of this night of impossible entry, not on the website or anywhere! Don’t waste your time staking your night on a location that will turn you away without reason .
** UPDATE ** Ok, 6 years later did a better translation of their response and I realize now they’re not threatening death 😂
I’m not a big drinker and I think my friend had maybe 1-2 drinks. So while someone being quite drunk is a fine reason to turn them away, that wasn’t what happened here. My warning stands- if you show up here, you may be turned away for no reason.

DON'T GO THERE.
Extremely bad experience.
I just went there with two friends of mine and we had the worst experience so far in Marseille and because of the owner who is just so not well educated and so aggressive. He became physically violent and kicked us out because one of us had a plastic cup from a different bar in her hand, almost empty... We did not understand the hostile attitude at first. We told him we would order soon but he pushed us out like an animal and used his strength to kick us out. On top of that one of us was a girl but he wouldn't care and still was violent.
Terrifying.

Happy hour while I was there, which meant half price. Service very friendly on top, so what more could a man in my situation possibly ask for? 😎🍻

I like the place and it is as the reviews say except that they charged me €8.50 for a pint of IPA which I wasn't expecting. Cocktails are more reasonably priced.

This restaurant-bar is located on the second floor in a building across the street from the pier, near the Office of Tourism. The cozy restaurant had a nice bar, and ship/maritime decorations. It almost felt like you were in an 1880s living room. Our server was friendly and we had a nice lunch and a rose that was a a great complement to the meal. Most of us ordered the caesar salad, which was tasty but I prefer less dressing. This was my second caesar salad in France and both times, the lettuce was drenched in dressing. I am starting to think that, this is the way the French like their caesar salads, so I didn't want to take a star off for not American-izing their salad, and also because the dressing was tasty but just too much of it, for my taste. Views were beautiful, service was great.

Probably the coolest bar in all of southern France. Super friendly staff - very chill. The ceviche we ate was probably the best on our 2 week trip. Great views. Not crowded.

Outstanding experience from beginning to end.
Everything was meticulously organized, spotless, and carefully arranged, which instantly fostered a cozy and inviting environment. The staff was courteous, professional, and attentive, always prepared to assist and address any inquiries. The overall quality genuinely surpassed my expectations, and it’s evident that they are committed to delivering excellent service. I particularly valued the meticulous attention to detail and the seamless, stress-free process. It’s not always simple to discover a venue that consistently provides such a favorable experience. I would wholeheartedly recommend this establishment to anyone seeking dependability and quality, and I eagerly anticipate returning in the future.

Great place to visit in the evening. They served food which we missed because we got there late. The DJ was playing salsa type music and the dancefloor was very busy with couples and friends dancing. Really good positive friendly vibe and atmosphere.

Desgusting place, the securities are super rude, the place smells like urine and they over charge the entrance for tourists.

Simple place but amazing atmosphere. Everyone was enjoying, dancing and having fun. Loved it and will return with pleasure!
Sølve Sanden Espedal★☆☆☆☆
One of the worst door experiences I’ve ever had. We were two well-dressed, sober guys — respectful and patient — and the bouncers just completely ignored us for no reason. Meanwhile, they let in a big group who clearly knew them and had an obvious connection to the door staff, skipping everyone else in line.
It felt like obvious discrimination and shady favoritism. No explanation, no «sorry, we’re full» — just silence and disrespect.
We stood there from 23:00 without any answer or acknowledgment.
A trendy place is worthless if the staff picks who they like based on who they know or where they’re from. Total waste of time. Management should be ashamed of how guests are treated at the door.

Absolutely Horrible Experience – Discriminatory Treatment
I rarely leave reviews, but what happened at Zanzibar Marseille was beyond unacceptable. As two Black men, we called ahead to ask about entry policies and were told the club was open until 5 AM and that two men coming in was no problem. Based on that, we made the trip over, expecting a good night.
However, when we arrived, everything changed. We were suddenly told we couldn’t come in unless we brought women. This was especially disheartening because we watched three white men walk in right after us with just one woman—and they were let in without hesitation.
It’s clear there was a racial double standard at play, and it’s incredibly disappointing. No one should have to feel unwelcome or judged because of the color of their skin. This kind of discriminatory behavior has no place anywhere, especially not in a city as diverse and vibrant as Marseille.
If you’re Black and hoping to have a good time, do yourself a favor and stay far away from Zanzibar Marseille. This place does not deserve your time or your money.
Dawid Wozniak★☆☆☆☆
The black guy said that 5 man cannot go in, even after that 15 man leaves the club, I and still we couldn’t go in. You have to speak french to go in. Definetelly don’t recomend.

8€ per bad beer.
The owner FORCED my friend and I to hang our sweaters. They used one clothes hanger for two of us and charged 4€.
They want you to hang your coats to make money off you but disguise it as "security" lol
Also this bad is a front for drug trafficking. Lots of that happening here.
Otherwise it's just a trashy bar. Skip this gay bar entirely.

I’m not a big fan of places that allow smoking inside or don’t know how to make whiskey sour, but this bar wins over with positive, home-like ambiance, friendly bartenders and peculiar interior design. I wouldn't recommend this place. The overall comfort isn't great, the space is quite small and feels cramped. The waitress was unpleasant, which made the experience even less enjoyable.

12 € for a cocktail, for Marseille next to the port is acceptable, but still a little bit pricey. But they have many drinks to choose from! I like sweet cocktails, so I ordered Big Sweet and Black Shadow - the Black Shadow drink was my favorite🤤
Service was so friendly, always smiley faces! I arrived at 11 pm and left at 1 am (Tuesday).
They also have food. Some girls from the table next to me offered me one piece of mozzarela pizza and it was delicious! I highly recommend it.
The atmosphere was great, they have a TV outside (no sound), played music, it's next to the port, many seats and tables. I was only outside, so cannot review the inside.
I enjoyed the stay!

Decent bar in the busy Place Jean Jaurs not too far from Cours Julien.
Definitely the cheapest bar we came across in our two days in the city - previously found 500ml beer at €6 - €7 but it was €4 in this place.
Most seating is outdoor.

Very friendly and smiling staff. We had beer and Muscat wine which was great. Amazing location for drinks at a very local place in Marseilles, where the locals hang out. The park next to it had a market which was a bonus to walk around after few drinks.

Nice atmosphere, good place to hangout with friends for a nice beer and lots of options. A wifi is missing for improvement the service

Wannabe Irish pub. Bartender doesn't seem to know English. I asked for an "Irish red ale" and he looked stumped, pointing at the board. Turns out I had to order a "Rousse". The place is dirty and doesn't look nice. Go to Loch Ness bar instead!

Popped in as could hear live band. Heavy metal band were good. Very small inside but good vibe.

Good rock music. Good television set-up. The bar staff were catering very well to the sport I wanted to watch and even brought me to another bar when they didn't have the channel themselves! (GAA hurling)
Agostino Bocchi★☆☆☆☆
I rarely rate this low, but the staff are extremely rude and inadequate for an "Irish" pub (I'm speaking about the guy who opens the pub in the afternoon).
He invited me to say "please" to order a beer, which I then paid 8.30€ (my personal record in Europe), he also told me that I could not stay at the counter.
It was probably my mistake, because I was in a hurry and it happens, but that arrogance is not justifiable, especially from a barman.
I don't speak his language so I felt scared.
It was the first and unique beer of my day in Marseille...
Really the first time in 30 years of pubs, I think the personnel should be more professional.
Also few beers and very expensive. Just go elsewhere, the others pubs on the same road offer really more and even kindness.
Tips for Enjoying Marseille’s Bar Scene
To truly drink like a local, you need to understand the unwritten rules of the Marseille apéro. The city operates on a different clock than the rest of France, often starting later and finishing much later. Here are some essential tips to ensure your night out is seamless, safe, and satisfying.
First, embrace the late schedule. While you can find a drink at 6 PM, the terraces do not truly fill up until after 8 PM, and the peak energy in many neighborhoods hits closer to 10 PM or 11 PM.
Second, do not skip the food. The “apéro” is not just about drinking; it is about grazing. Look for bars that offer planches of charcuterie, cheese, or the local specialty, panisse (chickpea fries), to line your stomach.
Third, while Marseille is a casual city, many upscale cocktail bars and hotel rooftops enforce a smart-casual dress code, particularly on weekends, so leave the flip-flops at the hotel if you plan to go upscale.
Fourth, carry some cash. While cards are widely accepted, many of the smaller, older establishments in Le Panier or the Vallon des Auffes may have a minimum spend or prefer cash for a single glass of wine.
Finally, utilize public transport or rideshares late at night; the metro stops running around 12:30 AM, and taxi ranks can get crowded, so plan your exit strategy ahead of time.
The beauty of Marseille’s drinking scene is its authenticity. It is a city that rewards the curious, whether you are chatting with a winemaker at a natural wine bar or watching the sun set over the Frioul archipelago from a rooftop.
Take your time, don’t try to rush between too many districts in one night, and allow the rhythm of the port to dictate your pace. You will find that the memories made over a shared bottle of rosé or a bitter, complex cocktail are often the highlight of any trip to the South of France.
