Matadero Madrid is more than a cultural landmark. It is a sprawling creative hub housed in a former slaughterhouse and livestock market on the banks of the Manzanares River, drawing a steady mix of artists, locals, and curious travelers. After exploring its exhibition halls, design studios, and riverside walkways, hunger tends to arrive quickly.
The surrounding neighborhoods of Legazpi, Delicias, and Chopera are not just residential. They are home to some of the most authentic, unfussy tapas scenes in the Spanish capital, far removed from the tourist-heavy crowds of the city center. Here, the focus remains on quality ingredients, honest cooking, and the social ritual of sharing small plates.
Finding a truly great tapas bar means looking beyond the laminated menus and neon signs. The best places in this part of Madrid combine a welcoming bar atmosphere with precise technique, whether that means a perfect tortilla de patatas, a garlicky set of gambas, or a slow-braised carrillera. The local crowd is discerning, and standards are high.
Because the area around Matadero is vast and slightly industrial, it can be easy to walk past an unassuming doorway without realizing what is inside. That is exactly why a curated guide matters. You do not want to waste time wandering when you could be sitting at a bar with a caña and a plate of something exceptional in front of you.
This guide is built for real-world use. It focuses on places that are accessible on foot from the Matadero complex or a very short metro or bus ride away, so you can transition smoothly from an afternoon of contemporary art to an evening of classic Spanish hospitality. Every recommendation prioritizes flavor, consistency, and atmosphere over gimmicks.
Whether you are looking for a quick standing bite at the bar, a relaxed table for a long sobremesa, or a modern twist on a Madrid classic, the options below cover the full spectrum. Prices are generally fair, service is direct, and the food reflects the proud, no-nonsense character of the city’s working-class south.
Below, you will find a carefully selected list of the best tapas bars near Matadero Madrid, each offering something distinctive. Use it as your starting point for a memorable eating experience in one of Madrid’s most authentic districts.

Best beer I have ever had. It was Alhambra beer, cold and smooth. The food and service did not impress me so much, but I would go back just for the beer.
Jota Campos★★★★☆
Typical Spanish tapas bar. The portions are quite large so be mindful when ordering. They’re not the most refined or high quality tapas but they do the job and it’s good value for money.

Had a great experience at Tapería La Pequeña Grana. Richard and Simon were amazing - really friendly, helpful, and made us feel welcome right away. The tapas were delicious and came out quickly. Would definitely recommend!

I can tell you… one of my favorites spots in Spain. The tapas and the beer were excellent. The huevos rotos, the small tapas with drinks….this place is a neighborhood star in the Embajadores. Good services… just like home!

I had been meaning to stop at this small, almost discreet bodega in the south of Madrid, and it turned out to be a stop well worth the detour. We tasted almost every dish on the menu, a concise but carefully considered selection of traditional recipes that feel both familiar and subtly reimagined. The tapas are executed with surprising finesse, with a sense of high elegance that goes beyond the modest format.
The house Chardonnay from La Mancha is an excellent companion throughout the meal, creamy yet fresh, with enough structure to support the entire menu and a rustic elegance that fits perfectly with its quietly Quixotic storytelling. Among the hot dishes, the honey and soy glazed pig’s ear, the meatballs, and the pisto were absolute highlights, each one precise in seasoning and texture.
The cheese selection also deserves special mention. The Flor de Romero, with its slight smoky note, was our favorite, both for its depth of flavor and for the way it seemed to dance with the creaminess of the Chardonnay. A bottle from Álvaro del Saz, with its spectacular bouquet, rounded out the experience and confirmed that the cellar, though compact, is far from predictable.
The house brewed beers provide another pleasant surprise. The B.Bitter 0825 stands out for its balance and character, with a firm but never aggressive bitterness, ideal for those who appreciate nuance. The remaining references are clearly aimed at more adventurous drinkers, palates in the mood to experiment.
Service ties everything together. María, our waitress, was attentive, warm, and genuinely witty, guiding us with natural ease through wines, beers, and dishes. Her presence contributed decisively to the rhythm of the evening and to the feeling that this is a small gem of a place, one that not only merits a first visit but almost demands a return.

Absolutely lovely the place, small, simple but the menu, wines and beers are special: handcrafted and selection.
There is one veggie option In the menu, pity is the only one, but is gorgeous and tastefully.

MajareTa was absolutely delicious! It’s very tiny inside but beautiful. We tried the toro croquetas and the huevos with artichokes and potatoes, and both dishes were outstanding. The toro croquetas were crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and packed with flavor. The huevos with artichokes and potatoes were comforting, perfectly cooked, and had a wonderful combination of textures and flavors.
You can really tell that high-quality ingredients are used in every dish. Everything was fresh, well-seasoned, and beautifully prepared. The food was both satisfying and memorable, and we enjoyed every bite. We’re already looking forward to coming back. Highly recommend!

Stumbled upon this place on a walk through Madrid. Delicious food! The whole chocolate pistachio cheesecake was one of the best desserts I have had. I dont say that lightly. A little live music to finish the evening was perfect!

This place was very disappointing. The waiter was very rude (not sure if this is the average behaviour) but the place was completely empty.
Was excited to try the Vermouth, it was just ok. I am sure you can find better places with better treatment.

This place is a delight and was one of our favorite dining experiences throughout our two week trip to Spain! The food, service and ambiance were all wonderful with the owner and server even stopping to teach us a little bit of Spanish along the way. We are so happy to have stopped into Tasca Barea and will think of it often! ✨
dan★★★★★
We walked past Tasca Barea a few days ago and it had people spilling onto the footpath, glasses raised, elbows out, the sort of crowd that makes you file a place away for later.
Tonight we turn up ten minutes after they unlock the door for dinner at 7pm, which in Spain counts as recklessly early. There is a small table inside that looks like it has been waiting for us specifically.
I am aware I have said this before on this trip, often and with feeling, but these are the best olives I have ever had. Fleshy and properly seasoned, floating around with some garlic. The kind you keep reaching for even when you know you've had enough olives now and should probably stop.
Wine. Then more wine. Then another bowl of olives. Four glasses of wine and two bowls of olives comes to ten euros.
It feels like someone briefly slipped and priced the night as if it were still the 90s and nobody corrected them. We sit there, happily complicit, chewing olives and watching the room fill, wondering how long beautiful places like this are allowed to exist before someone notices.

Absolutely charming and very lively vermouth and tapas bar, highly recommended getting in early if you want a seat, otherwise it's be butts to nuts. Every visitor to Madrid who I've brought here has loved it.
Anna★★★★★
It is a little gem of a bar. It's tiny but full of joy shared by all. There are no strangers here, just friends that you haven't met yet. If you are looking for a place with a soul, that's it! Tapas is amazing because owners care about the origin and quality of the food that they serve. And vermú.. well.. where will I start?! It's home made, delicious and served with a piece of orange and an olive so it not only tastes amazing but it also looks cute!
Joseph C★★★★★
Lured by the high rating and reviews, we made a short trek out of the touristy area and glad we did.
Welcomed by one of the owners, he was very patient with us while we nervously try to look up what to get here and helpful recommended to start with their very popular vermut on tap. Glad we did. It was our first time having vermut and we now prefer it over sangria.
Also ordered their tortilla de patatas, marinera and maritrini (first time having these and now I'm obsessed) and barea peppers (funnily, meant to order the fried green peppers but we actually fell in love with this one).
You can taste the care in the food (you can Google for their backstory) and atmosphere was friendly and laid back. Even a regular was helping us pick up the food while we soak in the great vibes at a beautiful, sunny spot by the large open window.
This place is clearly a local favorite and probably a best kept secret in Madrid.
We will definitely return again.

We Googled and the reviews about their Tapas were great. So based on that we decided to go there. On arrival we found out that there wasn't any Tapas available which meant the reviews were misleading. So we didn't eat there, as their other small menu didn't appeal to us.

This restaurant was a highlight of our trip to Madrid. Modern interpretations of classic Spanish tapas. High quality and reasonably priced. The tuna was excellent! We came on a Friday night around 21 and had to wait around 20 minutes for a table but it was definitely worth it.

Great spot for a solo meal, date or catching up with friends. Had the chipirones and mojo alioli sauce (not pictured bc it was so freaking good), croquettes (super cremoso, con buen queso) y rabo de toro in a little pocket pita. All the food was incredible, they serve a nice sweet vermut and had fresh flowers at every table and played Spanish music. In a great area with a lot of good spots to stop for a drink. Only complaint is it’s on the more expensive side for a tapas spot.

The place is very nice and the staff is lovely. We had alitas de pollo with barbecue sauce and a tomato salad with tuna. The food was tasty, and the atmosphere felt welcoming. The wine was okay, though the selection wasn’t very extensive

Just landed in Madrid and had to revisit the Anton market. Didn’t really check the 2nd floor last time but did so at night this time. Chose this spot because it definitely had a vibe with a chill and vibrant crowd. As I enjoyed my tinto de verano, the owner presented me with a nice tapas dish for free. So nice of her! This is Spanish hospitality at its finest!

We had a spectacular lunch here. The waitress was super friendly and recommended great choices to us. We had the tomato salad with sardines & octopus with mojo pico (potatoes typical from Canary Islands with different salsas). We also loved their extensive selection of vermouth. I had the Smokey one from the Priorat region. I highly recommend this place for a great local tapas lunch.

Very busy! The staff are friendly. I ordered half portion of Torrezno. It is fried perfectly. The crispy skin and juicy tender meat! Artichoke is very good too. Everything a little bit too salty to my taste. However, it is great pairing with some drink.

Surprised I haven't reviewed Latazo before as we keep coming back whenever we visit Madrid. They have a diverse vermouth selection and tasty Canarian tapas. The melted Canarian cheese served with various mojos - the perfect starter. They have all sorts of tapas with canned fish and seafood, can't go wrong with any of them. The tomatoes they use in the tomato salad are mouth watering good. Highly recommended for a light meal, complemented by friendly service.

Went for drinks and tapas. The pork belly was so tender and juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Perfection! Octopus was super tender and flavorful. Drinks were reasonable.
Tips for Enjoying Tapas Near Matadero Madrid
A little local knowledge goes a long way when you are eating in this part of Madrid. The rhythm of the neighborhood, the timing of the kitchens, and the way you order can all shape your experience. These practical tips will help you eat like a local and avoid common tourist mistakes, so you can focus on enjoying the food and the atmosphere.
Time your visit like a local. Lunch service in Madrid typically runs from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM, while dinner rarely starts before 8:30 PM. Many kitchens close between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM, so arriving at 6:00 PM hungry will usually leave you with only cold options or a locked door. Plan your tapas crawl around these windows.
Stand at the bar when possible. In many traditional tapas bars, eating at the bar is faster, cheaper, and more atmospheric than sitting at a table. You will get better service, you can point at what others are ordering, and you will often receive a small free tapa with your drink if the house is generous.
Do not order everything at once. Tapas are meant to be paced. Start with two or three plates, see how you feel, and then order more. This keeps the food hot, reduces waste, and gives you an excuse to stay longer. It also lets you adjust your order based on what looks good coming out of the kitchen.
Ask about the daily special. Many of the best bars near Matadero have a short menu of platos del día or off-menu recommendations written on a chalkboard or simply recited by the waiter. These are often the freshest, most seasonal, and most carefully prepared dishes in the house. Always ask what is good that day.
Bring cash for smaller bars. While most places now accept cards, a few old-school tapas bars in Legazpi and Delicias still operate on a cash-only basis or have a minimum spend for card payments. Keep a €20 or €30 note in your pocket to avoid an awkward walk to the nearest ATM.
The area around Matadero rewards slow, curious eating. Do not rush from one place to the next, and do not be afraid to try a bar that was not on your original list. Some of the best meals in Madrid happen by accident, when you follow the sound of a crowded room and the smell of garlic hitting hot oil.
When you finish your tapas route, take a short walk back toward the river or through the quiet streets of Chopera. The neighborhood has a calm, lived-in energy that is increasingly rare in central Madrid, and it is best appreciated with a full stomach and no fixed plan. That is the real pleasure of eating well in this part of the city.
