Nestled on the eastern edge of Spain’s Balearic Islands, Mahón (or Maó, as it is known in Catalan) offers a distinct culinary identity that sets it apart from the more touristic hubs of Mallorca and Ibiza. As the administrative capital of Menorca, this historic port city is defined by its deep natural harbor, Georgian architecture, and a laid-back atmosphere that prioritizes authenticity over spectacle.
Unlike many Mediterranean destinations where the menu is dominated by paella and sangria, Mahón takes pride in a gastronomic heritage shaped by centuries of British, French, and Spanish influence. Here, the local cuisine is anchored by fresh seafood, artisanal cheeses, and unique charcuterie, often served in settings that range from bustling markets to hidden cellar bistros.
For the discerning traveler, choosing where to eat in Mahón can be a delightful yet overwhelming challenge. The city is dense with options, from Michelin-recommended tasting menus to family-run tapas bars that have barely changed their recipes in decades. Knowing where the locals go versus where the tourists are funneled is the key to a memorable meal.
This guide is curated to help you navigate the best of Mahón’s culinary landscape. We have prioritized establishments that demonstrate consistency, use locally sourced ingredients, and offer an atmosphere that enhances the distinct character of the island. Whether you are seeking a romantic dinner overlooking the port or a quick bite between sightseeing, there is a table here for you.
We have considered not just the food, but the entire dining experience. The value for money, the warmth of the service, and the historical significance of the location all play a role in our recommendations. Menorca is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the best restaurants here reflect that respect for the environment.
From the famous Caldereta de Langosta (lobster stew) to the humble but perfect Sobrasada sausage, the flavors of Mahón are waiting to be discovered. Prepare to slow down, embrace the Mediterranean pace, and enjoy some of the most honest cooking in the Balearics.
Below, we have compiled a list of the twelve best restaurants that currently define the dining scene in Mahón. These selections range from high-end gastronomic experiences to unpretentious spots where the quality of the raw ingredients does all the talking.

Had a beautiful dinner there without reservation.
All service member were super friendly and communication was spot on perfect.
As a starter I had a small tuna skewer. Super nice little bite. I added the grilled artichoke with some jamon, which was definitely my favorite of all.
As main dish I chose rib. Really nicely prepared. Only thing I would change is the plating. The big bone was laying directly in the puree, so I first had to change the setting and put the bone to the side etc.
I think there are better presentation possibilities, maybe serving the puree in a separate little bowl, so the meat can have its own plate to shine.
I can strongly recommend this restaurant 🙂
TASTEFULLY BLUNT★★★☆☆
Xauxa in Maó harbour started with a bang… and then slowly turned the volume down. 😜
The brioche, beef or pork, was seriously tasty, juicy, indulgent and gone suspiciously fast. A very promising opening act. The tuna tacos followed, but unfortunately they were more “hello” than “WOW”. The Spanish classics did a better job, with good patatas bravas and pan con tomate bringing things nicely back on track.
The setting is simple, casual and pleasantly positioned by the harbour. Then came the seating mathematics. We were three people and somehow qualified for a table for two. Minutes later, a couple arrived and apparently unlocked the VIP upgrade… a table for four. 🤔 Maybe Menorcan geometry works differently?
Nothing disastrous, nothing spectacular either. Good bites, nice location, slightly bizarre service logic.
Would I rush back? Probably not. Would I steal another one of those brioches if it crossed my path? Absolutely. 😋

We tried to walk in on a Friday night and were sadly turned away because they were fully booked. Immediately booked for the Sunday and had an absolutely incredible experience! The food and service was exceptional and made our last night on the island very special. The best meal we had on our trip! 10/10

Lovely setting in and among a row of restaurants. Tasty food and excellent service. We had to start tuna tartare on seaweed crackers and patatas bravas (not fried) with lovely sauce. For mains: veal rib slow cooked and very tender with delicious sauce on bed of mashed potatoes and “surf and turf,” which was really like a risotto with bits of shrimp and guanciale mixed in. Too full for dessert, but their selections looked very nice. Reservations a must.

Although there is little number of reviews for this place - I highly highly recommend it! 🌟we had the pulled pork brioche that was excellent - must try and not pictured. The slow cooked rib was great too👍🏻

Perfect evening. Super friendly staff. Easy communication. I had a beautiful evening.
My culinary highlight was definitely the duck gyoza, absolutely spot on. But every of the four dishes I got was really good.
I highly recommend this restaurant.
Beltran Mata★★★★★
Loved it
A restaurant to share the dishes. In fact, your waiter will explain you exactly that.
Generally speaking it is a mediterranean-asian fusion restaurant, but maybe the best way to define it is “an reinterpretation restaurant”.
Come and try it and I hope for you that Juanpi is your waiter. He was really kind and helpful.
Simply fantastic!!!!
Daisy Chain★★★★★
Amazing little bar on the seafront. The atmosphere is perfect, the drinks are great and the food is spectacular! The bao buns, tacos, prawn ceviche, seabass ceviche are all to die for. There are loads of restaurants along the front and it can be hard to tell the great from the ok, but this is definitely worth it. We went there 3 nights in a row! The staff are also a really lovely bunch of guys and couldn't do enough for us - they looked after us so well. Thank you!
Zachary Wilbur★★★★☆
Great service at this tapas restaurant with asian fusion dishes. Overall every dish was solid

An absolute gem of a place. Amazing food with loads on offer so plenty to choose from. We were there for 6 nights and ate there for four of them. Super friendly staff. Always, always busy so you might need to wait for a table but usually not too long. Lots of locals there which is always a sure sign of a good place to eat. 100% recommend.

Friendly service, down to earth spot that is frequented by locals. Decent tapas for a good price. Worth a visit!

Tapas were great, atmosphere was really cozy, the place is small and it gives you the family business feeling. Prices are good and variation of the tapas is great.

By chance, we stay in a hotel just 1 minute
away and were looking for a quick and small
Iate lunch on our arrival day
The corner restaurant looks unassuming from
the outside and very traditional inside. It is not
big and you might have to wait for a table. Do
it! It is absolutely worth it.
Fantastic tapas and choice of a very wide
variety of fish, meat, and vegetarian tapas
We went back on the second day as it was so
good. The tapas are of outstanding taste and
quality. The service is perfect. And all for a
very reasonable price.
I am already looking forward to our next 'light
lunch and stuffing ourselves with yet another
delicious selection of tapas

Initially, I had a very good impression - the staff was very nice, smiling and offering helpful suggestions.
However, I was quite disappointed with the portion of beef ribs I was served -took a long time to arrive and didn't match the expectations in terms of taste (baked in the oven, served with a few small baked potatoes). For 40 euros you can definitely find better options in the same restaurant or elsewhere.
Stick to the daily menu, it's priced correctly and the quality is fine (had the chicken salad, sea bass (very tasty, served with homemade chips) and a good desert with meringue.
The view is beautiful and it's family friendly overall.
Ishan Khoenkhoen★★★★☆
Daniel was a great servant. We enjoyed our paella with duck. Would highly recommend this restaurant for the nice view and atmosphere it provides.

Exceptional food and impeccable service 🤩. What a fabulous location too. We enjoyed the most delicious lunch - the best we’ve had on the island. This is an absolute gem of a place with a very relaxed vibe. If you’re a foodie, then this is heaven 🥰. Thank you Mirador.

We had an amazing dinner here and one of the best restaurants here. Actually the price is very good to compare to down town restaurants. We ordered the mussels and octopus, both very well cooked and got a complementary starter as well.
We would come back here again and would recommend this to everyone
Joanna Berg★☆☆☆☆
We ordered squid, but it was served with bones, which is impossible since squid has no bones. This clearly shows a lack of proper preparation. On top of that, we also found hair in the food. We will never return and do not recommend this place to anyone.

We had a great meal. The beef gyozas were delicious as was our burrata salad.
For mains the sirloin steaks were cooked perfectly.
And if you like rice pudding the el rais rice pudding was fab.
Christiane Peretz★★★★★
Wonderful service! The staff are truly incredibly friendly and engaging. They joke around, but take their job seriously as well. The restaurant itself is very pleasant, clean and comfortable, with a nice view over the harbour. The food was also 90% delicious, but the lobster rice could be improved; the lobster does not come de-shelled, but you are also not provided with tools to do so yourself. The end-result was messy hands and meat in the lobster that we couldn’t get out. The aged sirloin rice, however, was amazing, and only social convention and a pretty full belly stopped me from licking the skillet clean. The desserts were also delicious and comforting. We had the peanut coulant, chocolate ganache, and apple tart, and most of us ate like we were racing against the clock, forgetting even to breathe at times. All in all, would highly recommend going.
Catarina Rocha★★★☆☆
Service was good and friendly but the food is very overpriced. The pescado rice had 3 tiny pieces of pescado with some very small shrimps and it cost over 55 euros. Very nice pan de crystal but again, very expensive. Has a nice view of the port but you can get that with other restaurants where the food is much better and affordable. Unfortunately, I would not repeat but everyone serving us was very friendly.
Kirsty Anson★★★★★
A beautiful balcony setting overlooking the harbour at sunset with a gentle breeze. The service was really friendly, attentive and efficient. We enjoyed the food very much, especially the grilled sea bass. This restaurant stands out for having equally good service and food, which is a rare find in Menorca.
Jared Mitchell★★★☆☆
This had been recommended but was not great tbh. From the rude security guard operating a security rope access via headphones to initial placement of our table it felt like we were visiting a high end club in Mayfair rather than a what can only be described as an average restaurant. We were moved to one of the empty sea view tables as we had booked two weeks before arriving and then ate pretty average food, croquets followed by paella with beef where we ordered for two and he served us it for 3 at a much higher price funnily enough. They ordered. E a taxi that didn’t turn having sod we were best to wait outside for it so overall I’d give it a miss loads of nice looking places on port side without the over self importance of this place. Sorry but worst meal we had in Menorca

A very good atmosphere, a real local tapas bar. The food is good, about the same price as elsewhere. There is no English menu, we trusted the waiter's recommendation, and we were not disappointed with the food. They did a good job with the sangria, though. The meal for two was €44, and two jugs of sangria were €70!!!!!. So 35€ for one jug is much more than expected! It was a shame to ruin an otherwise good place with this 🙁

Just stopped in for a beer and got some complimentary olives too. It was lovely. The flies were a nuisance but the staff were really friendly and it had a nice vibe. The olives were delicious. Beer was good too.

Best restaurant we have been to in Menorca. Small tapas dishes and all were excellent. Meatballs and Tuna sashimi were incredible. The Veal Tataki was incredible. The staff are also very friendly and responsive. It’s peak summer and the evening atmosphere is great here dining outside.
Annabel G★★★☆☆
Good service but disappointing albondigas and tuna sashimi (only 6 pieces) for 18 euros. Best was the calamari. Overall expensive for what it was.
Can’t recommend for food - it was ok - the wine wasn’t bad. Great location but Sa Botiga diagonally opposite is much better (and recommended).
Sarah Liau★★★★★
Best meal in Spain! We had the veal tataki which was superb, sweetbread was well cooked but a bit too rich after a few mouthfuls. The prawn taco was perfectly seasoned and the beef tartare was very fresh. 100% would come again.

Excellent tapas, lots of flavours, good wine list and lovely atmosphere, will come again.

We had two entrees and a main course; the dressing of the salad was way too salty, the ceviche was OK, and the fish was dry. So food-wise, not the best experience. However, the service was very nice and if you are looking for a quiet terrace with views of the port away from the busy restaurants right at the port, this is a nice place.
Jay Judin★★★★★
Great place for an evening cocktail or glass of wine as you look over the port to the East at sunset.
Food was average, but well priced.
Service was above average.

We had an excellent long, lazy lunch here. It's an excellent spot over the port of Mahon with great views and a relaxed vibe. Tapas were great, wine was great but above all the service from Diego was the best we had on our visit to Mahon. If you want the classic long, lazy lunch on a terrace, you can do it here.

What a delightful find in the port where the view is nice but the food is usually meh. This was incredible with every plate exquisitely prepared, from the Joselito croquetas and gildas to the ceviche (yum) and dry aged tuna. Amazing. And you must try the "tuna wings", fish that you eat like it were chicken wings. Go.

We were honoured to attend the opening of this new restaurant on the sea front in Mahon. quite simply amazing. At last there is available in Mahon a restaurant of the highest quality and at perfectly reasonable prices. Beautifully decorated. exquisite delicious and imaginative dishes. Clearly a lot of thought an work has gone into them. prepared with dedication, love, time, the finest ingredients and at the hands of a master Chef. Also an excellent wine list, delicious cocktails and superb service. The complete package !! Mahon is truly fortunate to have this place to set the bar at the highest level and all at great value for money given the top quality of every dish. We will repeat again and again. Thank you team Jondo and congratulations for your efforts and attention to detail. You deserve, and will have, great success of that I am very sure 🥂

We had a fabulous lunch- the food was delicious (we tried 3 dishes ❤️ all of them), setting, design aspects very well done and the community working there were welcoming to us and enjoyable to experience the fun/relationships they share. Have recommended the restaurants to friends traveling there this month and will continue to recommend to the sailing community we are part of full time. Thank you!!

The food is very good, the service also very good. The waiter explained the dishes outside the menu, especials, the surprise 😲 was the price of the open omelette that we order with some mushroom that was 24 euros, incredible. The rest was ok but this one was very overpriced. I love the restaurant even the waiter told us about the omelette with esclatasangs and there were only 3 but buletus, the dessert and especially the sashimi amazing. Price is +40 PP. I think ses culleres from that same group is worth to visit. We came back yesterday and the dinner was awesome, service fantastic, food incredible.

We had an amazing dinner experience!
The atmosphere was great with lovely music and a calm view of the boats moored at the harbour. The food was absolutely phenomenal, especially the seafood carbonara. It was so good we had to go back for a second night out of a 5 night holiday just to have it again.
Alvaro was a great waiter and gave excellent service. Making sure to always keep us topped up on drinks and recommending the best dish on the menu.
The whole place was lovely. Would highly recommend 🙂

Wow! What absolutely amazing food. The pasta is fresh and out of this world. The sauces are ALL amazing. Really liked this place. Food good, service quick. Advise booking. But you can sit at the bar.
Ate here three times oxtail and the goats cheese were my favourites. People enjoyed squid, mini fish slightly bigger than whitebait and burgers. Something for everyone and excellent portion sizes, including wine and spirits.

Very good food, they are even open during siesta. Our server Manel, I think, is very attentive even though he speaks little English. The food is far the best weve had in Menorca. A lot of tourist trap and this is not one of them. Price is good

S'Aturadeta is a decent place if you’re after something quick and simple. The food was quite basic, nothing special, but still fine for a casual meal. The atmosphere was relaxed and the staff were friendly. Overall, it’s a good place to eat.

The croquetas all taste good! We also ordered Rabo de toro and Carne con guisantes, both are nice tapas. The place is very cute with nice service, we will come again.
Insider Tips for Dining in Mahón
Navigating the restaurant scene in Mahón requires a bit of local knowledge, as dining customs here differ slightly from the mainland and other islands. The following tips are designed to help you eat like a local, secure the best tables, and avoid common tourist pitfalls while ensuring you get the most authentic experience possible during your stay.
-
Embrace the Late Dinner Hour: While many restaurants in the port area open early to accommodate visitors, the true local dinner service rarely begins before 8:30 PM or 9:00 PM. If you want to dine among Menorcans and experience the best atmosphere, book a table for after 9:00 PM.
-
Look for "Menorca Reserva de Biosfera" Labels: Many high-quality restaurants now display a badge or note indicating they are part of the island’s commitment to sustainability. Choosing these spots ensures you are eating food sourced from local farms and fisheries, which supports the island’s economy and reduces food miles.
-
Do Not Skip the Mahón Cheese: Menorca is famous for its cow’s milk cheese, which ranges from soft and creamy to aged and crumbly. Always order a cheese board if it is available, and ask for the "curado" (cured) variety, which has a sharp, salty bite that pairs perfectly with local red wine.
-
Book Ahead for the Port Views: The restaurants located directly on the harbor front in Mahón are in high demand, especially during the summer months and on weekends. If you have your heart set on a waterfront table for sunset, you should reserve at least two to three days in advance.

Master the "Menú del Día": For lunch, look for restaurants offering a "Menú del Día" (Menu of the Day). This is usually a fixed-price, three-course meal including bread and a drink. It is the most economical way to sample high-end cooking without paying a la carte prices, and it is what the local workforce eats daily.

Try the Pomada: While not food, no meal in Mahón is complete without the local drink. Pomada is a refreshing mix of Menorcan gin (Gin Xoriguer) and lemonade or cloudy lemon soda. It is served over ice and is the perfect accompaniment to salty seafood and fried dishes.
As you wander the cobbled streets and the bustling port, let your senses guide you. The true magic of dining in Mahón lies not just in the exquisite plates set before you, but in the unhurried rhythm of the meal and the view of the boats bobbing in the harbor.
Whether you choose a sophisticated tasting menu or a simple plate of fried calamari by the water, you are participating in a culinary tradition that has been refined over centuries. Enjoy the journey, and bon profit!
