12 Best Restaurants Near Matadero Madrid

Located in the vibrant Arganzuela district, Matadero Madrid has transformed from a historic slaughterhouse into one of Europe’s leading contemporary cultural centers. Whether you are visiting for an avant-garde art exhibition, an independent film screening, or a weekend design market, the surrounding area offers a surprisingly diverse culinary landscape. Because Matadero sits along the banks of the Manzanares River, it acts as a gateway between the traditional barrios of Madrid and the modern redevelopment of Madrid Río.

The area immediately surrounding the center is characterized by a mix of traditional Spanish taverns, experimental gastro-bars, and international cuisine. Unlike the heavily touristic center of Madrid, the restaurants near Matadero cater heavily to local residents and creative professionals. This means you are more likely to find honest pricing, seasonal menus, and a relaxed atmosphere where you can discuss the art you have just seen without being rushed.

Madrid’s dining culture is unique in its timing and structure. Lunch typically begins after 2:00 PM, while dinner rarely starts before 9:00 PM. If you are planning to combine a visit to Matadero with a meal, you may need to adjust your schedule or look for establishments that offer continuous kitchen hours. Fortunately, the neighborhoods of Legazpi, Delicias, and Chopera have adapted to the influx of cultural visitors by offering more flexible dining windows than other parts of the city.

The gastronomic identity of this district is deeply rooted in traditional Madrilenian cooking. You will find robust stews like cocido madrileño, garlic-infused shrimp, and perfectly fried calamari sandwiches. However, the presence of Matadero has also attracted a wave of young chefs who are reinterpreting these classics with modern techniques and global influences. This creates a unique tension between the old and the new, mirroring the architectural contrast of the cultural center itself.

Accessibility is a major advantage when dining in this area. The Legazpi metro station (Lines 3 and 6) is located directly in front of Matadero, making it easy to travel from Sol, Gran Vía, or the southern suburbs. Additionally, the Madrid Río park provides a scenic walking route to neighborhoods like La Latina or Carabanchel. Choosing a restaurant near Matadero allows you to avoid the congested tourist traps while still remaining within a 15-minute metro ride of the city center.

When selecting the best restaurants for this guide, we prioritized variety, quality of ingredients, and proximity to the cultural center. We have included options for every budget, from quick tapas bars to sit-down dining experiences. Whether you have 30 minutes between exhibitions or a full evening to enjoy a leisurely dinner, the surrounding streets offer a solution for your specific needs.

Below is a curated list of the most compelling dining options within walking distance of Matadero Madrid. These selections reflect the authentic character of the Arganzuela district while offering the high standards expected by discerning travelers and locals alike.

We had a great time at the Cantina. I've been before and sat outside in the garden area which is lovely. This time we were sat inside as the garden is closed at this time of year. The interior decor is awesome - they have retained many of the original features of the building, with some modern touches, and lovely lighting. Whilst the waiters were very friendly, I have to say the service was not the best - fairly slow and they forgot a couple of our dishes. The food was enjoyable but not very exciting, quite forgettable. Some of the dishes felt slightly lazy. I would definitely recommend La Cantina for the atmosphere and beautiful design - a perfect place to have a coffee or glass of wine. However, the food is not at the same high level - that's the reason for the 3 star review.

Cozy place, very nice staff and veggie and gluten free options. Highly recommended to go after an exhibition in Matadero. You can either go for a fancy dinner in a table or have a drink and some snacks in the stairs. I really like the stairs area. It makes the place special. I recommend to make a reservation if you prefer a table to have dinner. We had zucchini and eggplant and it was amazing, very fresh and delicious! We'll come back for sure! ☺️

Very nice cantina. The service is quick and the people are nice. The food was fresh and really good. Interesting take on the daily dish where you pick 4 items to set your dish out of a list of 5.

This is one of my favorite places & restaurants in Madrid. The place is gorgeous, very cozy and friendly. The inside is beautiful and the terrace outside is just the highlight! The food is just amazing! I love Olivia te Cuida, they just know how to make the best Seasonal food, simply, tasty and always special with a special touch! Just perfect for me. Last but not least, the staff is just amazing, very friendly and professional at the same time. A secret place (not that secret....) and I hope it won't get too well known!! 😊 Merci beaucoup ! L.

I truly wish I could give this place a better rating because the location and terrace are very cozy and their menu del dia is great for 14 euros. It’s a pity because the only issue with it is super unfriendly staff. I went a couple of times because I like food but people who work there always treat you not well. They are always in a rush and act like they have no time to take your order. They rarely smile or take time to make a small talk. This unfortunately ruins first two factors which I mentioned as positive. If they are so busy why not to hire help and let this beautiful place prosper? Truly a pity.

We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. There is also a an area to buy second hand books and to leave anonymous messages to inspire other people. The “cocas” a kind of bread from Valencia similar to a pizza and the patatas bravas were very good!

Walk into this place because of the rain. We decided to have Manu of the day for late lunch. Very surprised how good the food are and very two friendly staffs took good care of us. Definitely recommend you come check it out!!

The atmosphere was nice. Although it was like 11 pm but the waiter was so friendly and welcoming and had much energy to explain everything and help us to choose a dish based on our preferences. Food quality was also fine for me as a tourist

By far my favorite meal of my Madrid trip. The katsu sandwich was to die for. And the caramelized pear dessert was interesting too! I expected it to be warm, but a cold desert made it even more interesting.

I really liked the creative Japanese-Spanish flavors here, so much that we came back twice! I dream about the eel taco - the highlight of what we ordered because it just hit all the flavor notes, especially with the shiso leaf and lemon. The only thing that would elevate the experience more is if they had a Japanese inspired cocktail menu
Bob Frantz★★★★★
Amazing experience ! Everything was good , the food, the decor, the vibe, the service. The meat was absolutely delicious and the waiter Alfredo was top notch. Definitely recommend this restaurant if you are in Madrid
Marie Yang★★★★★
Came in without reservation but they accommodate me at the bar. The tuna tartare noodles are mind blowingly good. I wish I could come back and try more things next time
Stuart Lee★★★★★
What can I say — this place is absolutely fantastic! We booked after seeing the creative menu and glowing reviews, and it truly lived up to the hype. Between four of us we shared a variety of dishes (though, of course, only remembered to photograph a few 😂). Every plate was beautifully presented and packed with flavour, but the tuna tartare stole the show — simply incredible. Don’t miss the burrata, and trust me, you’ve never tasted courgettes or beetroot like this before. And please, save room for dessert — they’re unmissable! Portions are generous and perfect for sharing, and the service was seamless and professional from start to finish. If you’re anywhere near Madrid, just go. You’ll thank yourself later.

Visited on a Sunday for lunch. Seems reservation is needed but they were kind enough to accommodate us. We ordered the veg salad, grill chicken wrap and veg lasagna. Everything was delicious. The staff was friendly. Highly recommended.
Eloy Bouzas Moares★★★★★
This is probably my favourite restaurant! The place is small so you should book a few days before but it's totally worth it. The entrecôte they have is one of the best meat meals I've ever had! And nothing to complain about their pasta al pesto, their churrasco or even those amazing chicken rolls. Take a look to the deserts too! A bit expensive for the size they have but worth the bite. The best about this place is the service tho. They're so kind and friendly no matter how busy they are! For us they're like family at this point and we've only be there three times. For now! If you're looking for good Italian or Argentinian food there's no better place in Madrid than this one.
Luiza Strimbeanu★★★★★
We’ve tried four types of empanadas and all of them were excellent! I recommend the one with cheese and onion. We also had beef milanesas and they were also great. The staff was really nice and welcoming. Also, the music was good. Will definitely come again!
Usif Chatila★★★★★
The staff were incredibly friendly, and the food was amazing! The Italian burrata, in particular, was delicious, definitely highly recommended. Overall, a fantastic dining experience!

Wonderful argentinian-italian place in a cute place with original tiling and flooring. It is run by one family and the food is as homemade as you can find. They specialize in pastries and they nail it. Service is fast and nice. An absolute must in this area. It only opens for lunch and dinner times.

I found out through The Fork APP and visited there. It was nice to have a TV screen inside, wide, and a terrace outside. I recommend fried mushrooms because they are really delicious. Other fried foods were also delicious, especially served with vegetables, which sets them apart from other restaurants.
Velina Velikova★★☆☆☆
This might have been the worst service my family and I experienced dining ever. The server literally rolled her eyes at us multiple times despite her serving us the wrong food twice. She gave us major attitude anytime we didn’t speak perfect Spanish. I’ve never written a negative review before but this was actually insane

Had a very enjoyable dinner here with a mixture of small plates being shared. Service was friendly and helpful and the bill was reasonable. Overall a very enjoyable experience.

Small gastrobar with modern Spanish food. The creamy rice with oxtail and mushrooms was delicious. We also liked the leek confit. The Russian salad, however, tasted flat. Great torrija for dessert. Overall, though, the food is overpriced for what it is. Service is not attentive, either. And, surprisingly for a place called "Divino Tinto", they're very reluctant to give you any explanations about the wines they have.
Fred H.★★★☆☆
The place is OK but very small. You can only sit if you have dinner. They always put reserved signs, even if empty. Food is Ok, some are good like canelones de toro, others not good like tartar de atún. They try to cook fancy food but it falls a bit short. Food is expensive for what it is. Desserts are Ok, torrija de brioche wss good but I had it better in other places. Service was Ok. Wineis OK. Overall OK but small and expensive.

The best meal I have had in Spain. Beautiful ceviche followed by a tuna served straight from the pan. Stunning food and the service was excellent. Very friendly despite my limited Spanish language. 5 stars.
Hilal Bayar★★★★★
Overall, an amazing experience, excellent food. The star dish for us was definitely the tuna (atún con salsa de rabo de toro), absolutely finger licking! Then tomato salad, super delicious. Flor de calabaza was also very very tasty but I found it a little expensive (5€ each). Ceviche was good, but I’ve had better ones in other places, if you’re a big ceviche one, you might not find this top quality, also the portion was a little small. Cheesecake was amazing for me, with a strong taste of cheese. For 3 people we paid 118 with some drinks and a cocktail, could have been cheaper but still, acceptable. Staff is very friendly and helpful, atmosphere is pleasant.
Rafael Gonzalez Anuzita★★★★★
What an amazing experience. The menu is imaginative and delicious. Great value for money, one of those places where you can eat like Michelin but not leaving your left kidney in the process. Totally recommend.

Small restaurant close to Matadero in Madrid. You can actually watch the chef in action and how perfectionist he is. Quality of the products is good and the menu also creative. Be sure to book in advance

Friendly and warm place! Delicious pisco sour & menu! I tried the octopus dish and the cachopo. I love how the octopus was grilled, it was not slimy at all! The sauce was inventive but I could have done without it. The cachopo was cooked perfectly, it was crispy and not overloaded with cheese.

Gorgeous food with such a relaxed atmosphere. I had a table for one and though the menu is large portions typically for sharing (which I love), they made some of the starters smaller for me and charged accordingly, which was unexpected and very gracious of them! Will definitely be back. The food was so delicious and Fernando was lovely and super friendly.

Tiny gastrobar run by a jovial Greek guy. The food is spectacular, especially the tzatziki and mousaka. While most of the dishes on the menu are traditional, both the preparation and presentation feel modern and refined. We'll definitely be back.

Nantes is, in many ways, a correct and coherent proposal: another contemporary take on the castizo restaurant, one that feels perfectly logical for its location and for the current Madrid dining landscape. The menu revisits familiar flavors with a modern touch, and while nothing truly misfires, it sometimes leans more on concept than on genuine culinary excitement. Where some doubts arise is in the balance between what is offered and the price point. The experience feels aligned with a certain idea of trendy neighborhood dining, but perhaps less so with the bill that arrives at the end of the meal. The clear standout is the cheesecake, a dessert that condenses the best of the house: well executed, indulgent without being cloying, and with a texture and flavor that stay with you after the last bite. It is, without doubt, the dish that most justifies the visit and hints at what Nantes could become if the rest of the menu reached the same level.

Excellent spot. The food is typical Spanish, done really well and delicious. You should definitely try some of the legumes dishes, like a beam stew with rabbit shoulder. They also do a lunch menu and I can't wait to come and try that.

We booked a table through the website. There was no "table inside" option, only on the "terrace". The terrace is located between two roads. For appetizer they brought pickled cherry tomatoes and carrots. Beef cheeks and pork were incredibly tasty

So glad we gave this spot a try 😇👌🏽. Decoration & ambiance is so lovely! Staff is friendly and the food was deelicious! We had made a reservation through Google and everything went very smoothly! I highly recommend the dishes we tried! The carrillera de ternera was sooo soft, it melts in your mouth! And the accompanying parsnips purée was a lovely touch! As for the secreto de iberico, we loved it and woud love to know the secret to the accompanying zucchini- sooo good! Oh and yes, try the cheesecake!! Creamy delight ✨👍🏽

Food was good and the cheesecake was delicious! We ordered the menu de mediodía which was a little expensive for the quantity, but the quality made it worth it. The staff was very nice.

Tips for Dining Near Matadero Madrid

Navigating the local dining scene can be significantly enhanced by understanding a few unwritten rules of Madrid’s hospitality culture. The area around Matadero is less commercialized than the city center, which means service can be more personal but also less accommodating to rushed tourists. By following a few practical strategies, you can ensure that your meal complements your cultural visit rather than complicating it.

  1. Book ahead for weekend lunches: The restaurants in the Chopera and Legazpi neighborhoods are incredibly popular with local families on Saturdays and Sundays. If you plan to eat between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, a reservation is essential to avoid a long wait.

  2. Look for the "Menú del Día": On weekdays, many sit-down restaurants offer a fixed-price lunch menu that includes a starter, main course, dessert, and a drink. This is almost always the best value for money, often costing between €12 and €16 for a substantial meal.

  3. Embrace the "Caña" culture: A caña is a small glass of draft beer, usually costing around €2 to €2.50. Ordering a caña or a small wine (vino de la casa) often comes with a complimentary tapa in the more traditional bars, making it an economical way to sample the local flavors.

  4. Be aware of kitchen closing times: While some tourist-centric restaurants serve food all day, many quality establishments near Matadero close their kitchens between 4:30 PM and 8:00 PM. If you get hungry in the late afternoon, look for bars that advertise "cocina continua" (non-stop kitchen).

  5. Venture south of the river: Most visitors instinctively walk north toward Atocha, but crossing the bridge to the Usera side can yield incredible Chinese and Latin American food. This area is often overlooked by tourists, offering a more authentic and affordable dining experience.

  6. Check Matadero’s event schedule: The center often hosts food markets and pop-up events in its outdoor plazas. Before committing to a restaurant, check the official Matadero Madrid calendar, as you might find a temporary gastronomic event happening right on the premises.

The area surrounding Matadero Madrid represents a microcosm of the city’s evolving food scene. Here, the industrial heritage of the slaughterhouse meets the green spaces of Madrid Río, creating an atmosphere that is both gritty and refined. Dining in this district allows you to step away from the paella-themed tourist menus and experience how modern Madrileños actually eat.

Whether you choose a century-old tavern serving tripe stew or a modern bistro experimenting with fermented vegetables, the restaurants near Matadero offer a genuine taste of the city’s soul. Take your time, order a glass of Ribera del Duero, and let the conversation flow as freely as the Manzanares outside.
