12 Best Bakeries Near Plaza Mayor

Finding a great bakery near Plaza Mayor is about more than just satisfying a sugar craving. It is a way to connect with Madrid’s living history, where century-old recipes meet modern artisan techniques. The streets surrounding this iconic square are a labyrinth of sensory delights, filled with the aroma of toasted flour, cinnamon, and dark chocolate.

However, the sheer volume of options can be overwhelming, and tourist traps often lurk around historic corners. You do not want to waste a meal on a stale croissant or an industrial muffin when true pastry mastery is just steps away. Knowing where the locals line up in the morning is the key to an authentic experience.

To curate this list, we evaluated bakeries based on the quality of ingredients, baking technique, atmosphere, and historical significance. We looked for places that use real butter instead of margarine, ferment their doughs properly, and treat chocolate as an art form rather than an afterthought. These are the spots that define Madrid’s baking culture.

Whether you are looking for a traditional Spanish breakfast of chocolate con churros, a flaky napolitana de chocolate, or a modern sourdough loaf, the area has it all. The best part is that these bakeries are all within easy walking distance of the square, making them perfect for a self-guided tasting tour.

In this guide, we have prioritized establishments that offer consistency. A bakery can have a beautiful storefront, but if the quality fluctuates daily, it does not deserve your time. The names below have passed the test of thousands of daily customers, from retired Madrileños to discerning food critics.

We have also considered the "grab-and-go" factor. While some of these spots have seating, many are designed for you to order at the counter and eat while strolling through the historic Barrio de las Letras or La Latina. This is how Madrid is meant to be enjoyed.

Below is our curated selection of the finest ovens in the heart of the Spanish capital. Each entry offers something unique, ensuring that whether you prefer savory or sweet, traditional or avant-garde, you will find your perfect bite.

The balance of flavors, the attention to detail, and the sheer beauty of each dessert make this shop a true homage to the art of pastry-making. Whether you’re indulging in a flaky croissant, a rich chocolate tart, or a fruit-filled delicacy, every bite is a testament to their craftsmanship. Nice marzipan cake, but very expensive. I suggest those with pine seeds.

Marzipan was amazing till I found little surprise on it. Wasn't pleased to see little bug with their webs on the figurines. Would gladly go and exchange it but I traveled back home the next day I bought it. Check your small red boxes for any unpleasant discoveries. Thank you

It’s a lovely, traditional Spanish patisserie. From the outside, you wouldn’t realise they have seating inside, so it was a pleasant surprise as we were hoping to sit down and enjoy our desserts. There’s a great variety to choose from, and everything we tried was fresh and delicious. The staff were polite and efficient, even though the place was very busy. Despite the constant flow of customers, it was impressively clean and well maintained. A perfect spot to take a break and enjoy something sweet.

04/04 路過門口很多西班牙老人排隊,是傳統甜點老店 The El Riojano is a historic pastry shop and bakery in Madrid, located near the city’s old town and close to landmarks such as the Plaza Mayor. Founded in the late 19th century (1888), it is known for preserving traditional Madrid pastry-making techniques. The interior still retains much of its original decoration, including carved wood details, glass display cases, and an old-fashioned café atmosphere that reflects its long history. El Riojano is especially famous for classic Spanish sweets such as roscones de reyes (Three Kings’ cake), ensaimadas, yemas, and a wide range of handmade pastries and cakes. Many of its recipes follow traditional Madrid and Castilian confectionery styles, emphasizing butter-rich doughs, sugar glazing, and simple but precise craftsmanship. Today, it functions both as a bakery and a small café space, where visitors can enjoy pastries on-site or take them away. It remains one of the most authentic historic pastry shops in Madrid, valued for its continuity, heritage, and artisanal quality rather than modern reinterpretation.

Fantastic steeped in tradition institution of Madrid. Have to stop for a hot chocolate and a pastry. The old world charm is very much alive. Incredibly busy, constant flow of people at breakfast time but we did not wait for long to be seated and we saw the same with other customers. The service is tip top, they are friendly and super efficient. Generally older local generation all dressed immaculately with a few tourists - great indication if locals frequent then it is trustworthy and good 👍
Florencia Gomez Maidana★★★★★
We loved this traditional bakery. The “bizcocho de manzana” was definitely a highlight — it was super fresh, soft and not overly sweet. The croissants and the assorted cookies were spectacular as well. We went right when they opened for breakfast, so the service was quick and very good. In the afternoon it was quite busy. The take-away area can feel a bit chaotic when there are a lot of people and the order of service gets a little mixed up, but the staff are very friendly and kind.

El Riojano is my favorite spot for desayunos in Madrid ☕🥐 I ended up coming back around 4 times during my week in Madrid, that’s how good it is. Classic, simple, and consistently satisfying. The place that just feels right every morning.

There are nice cakes but only one seller, so it makes the waiting time extremly long and the seller itself is very slow. There are many cakes where the price is not shown. Ingredients are also not listed. For that high price I would aquire those things.

The pastries in this shop will blow your mind! They have the authentic tarta de santiago & more. The sweet is balanced , fluffy & super fresh

Quaint little bakery that has everything you could imagine to eat in Spain. Stop by and get yourself a treat like we did. There is no seating, but you can stand at their little bar (6ft in length) and enjoy a dessert or croissant or beverage. It is on a main street from the Cathedral to the Plaza Mayor.

The most delicious and authentic pastries made fresh in house every day. And the staff is magnificent.
Mary Lee Montfort (Mary Lee's Desserts)★★★★★
Authentic bakery in a wonderful area (not touristy). Not far from Plaza Mayor. We tried three small things…2 that were cookies and one that looked like a small donut. Wow…they were delicious and apparently only made at this time of year for a religious celebration. The woman at the counter was very kind even though I speak little Spanish. We’ll be going back for sure. Highly recommend!

A pastry lovers delight. I was pretty sure I wanted to get only their famous chocolate napolitana and it did not disappoint.. decadent chocolate cake (ish) inside a buttery airy puff pastry. Heaven in a bite. Not too sweet and perfect for some one like me who doesnot have a sweet tooth. They have huge lines but they move pretty fast. So dont give up. Also there is no chance of them being sold out since they keep bringing out freshly baked goods. Good place to even bring back baked gifts for friends and family. Centrally located at Puerta del Sol. Highly recommend this spot.

La Mallorquina is a lovely café with delicious cakes, especially the Ensaimada. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Definitely a nice place to enjoy a sweet treat.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Visiting La Mallorquina is stepping into a living piece of Madrid’s culinary history. Located in the heart of Puerta del Sol, this iconic pastry shop delivers not only exceptional quality but also tradition and charm that have endured for generations. Their pastries are simply outstanding, fresh, delicate, and crafted with precision. The napolitanas, ensaimadas, and classic Spanish pastries are rich in flavor, perfectly balanced, and absolutely unforgettable. The aroma alone invites you in, and every bite confirms why this place has remained a beloved institution for so long. Whether paired with a coffee or enjoyed on their own, their creations reflect true mastery of traditional Spanish pastry. The service is efficient despite the constant flow of visitors, a testament to its popularity and reputation. La Mallorquina is more than a pastry shop, it is part of Madrid’s identity. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates tradition, authenticity, and exceptional sweets.

04/04 西班牙人擠爆的麵包店,點了一個可頌,點餐要直接跟店員喊 The Pastelería La Mallorquina - Sol is one of the most famous traditional pastry shops in Madrid, located directly at the Puerta del Sol, one of the city’s busiest and most central squares. Founded in 1894, La Mallorquina has become an iconic stop for both locals and visitors seeking classic Spanish pastries in a historic setting. It is especially known for its elegant ground-floor pastry counter and its upstairs café, where customers can sit and enjoy views over the bustling Puerta del Sol. Signature items include napolitanas de chocolate (chocolate-filled pastries), palmeras, milhojas, and a variety of traditional cakes and baked goods. The pastries are typically rich, buttery, and made in the classic Madrid confectionery style. Today, La Mallorquina remains one of Madrid’s most recognizable pastry institutions, valued for its central location, long history, and consistent quality, making it a popular stop for a quick breakfast, afternoon coffee, or sweet break while exploring the city center.

Loved La Mallorquina 🎀 Such a cute bakery with a cozy vibe. We had breakfast here and everything was amazing. The croissants were huge, soft, and slightly sweet, and the Napolitana (especially the cream and chocolate one) was a highlight. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Madrid!

An excellent bakery near Plaza del Opera on a quiet street. Chef Trabanco is a true craftsman. His creations are beautiful and expertly prepared. So good with the perfect balance of flavors and texture. And he's a super nice guy! The bakery itself is a nice quiet spot away from the tourist spots (and the tourists).

Inside Santa Eulalia gives you the feeling like being in “little Paris”, with cozy old-world decor, books, plants, and exposed brick walls. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you can really feel the care behind the place. The pastries and breads are clearly top quality, made with great ingredients and a lot of attention to detail. I had an excellent cortado with a DELICIOUS hazelnuts bun, the cakes and the breads looked incredible. Service was very friendly and English speaking. The space is quite spacious and with WiFi so you can enjoy the coffee and the pastries and also work there.

Excellent place to enjoy a sweet and also they have brunch with eggs! The sweets are just incredible! (Especially pain au chocolates with pistachio and chocolate) Also coffee was good and eggs were really good portion! Totally recommended!
Dhoha Rashed Alshalawi★★★★☆
Loved the sweets, but not the coffee. The cappuccino didn’t taste like a proper cappuccino—it was more like instant coffee and lacked foam. The coffee bar could be more organized and cleaner, especially since the main seating area is right in front of it. On the positive side, the staff are sweet, kind, and provide good service. The decoration and overall vibe of the place are authentic, and the location is great.

Staff are really attentive and friendly. I visited last Monday and he took the time to explain how each product was made, when the best before date would be, etc. I couldn't make any purchase on the spot but came back a few days later, and though it was a different staff she was equally nice and tried to communicate through my terrible Spanish. So clearly this store values customer experience which is why I chose to return here in the first place despite the fact that there are a couple of other sabor stores in the vicinity. I bought some for gifts and they all really like it. Recommended!

Patricia was a delight! We might’ve had one too many samples but we did end up buying a few to take back home. Would recommend the dark chocolate with the berries.

Incredible value for money right in the center! The cheesecakes are delicious and super affordable for the Plaza Mayor area. Just keep in mind that it gets quite busy and there's often a queue, so make sure to leave a few extra minutes. Highly recommended for a quick dessert!

I tried the original and pistachio cheesecake and both were really nice. I was simply in awe of the price. And I loved the interaction with the employee at the counter. I'm learning Spanish, so I was trying to order in Spanish and she was fully supportive and patient with me. Much appreciated!

A true paradise for cheesecake lovers! Every bite was incredibly creamy, rich, and perfectly balanced without being overly sweet. The quality of the ingredients really stands out, and the presentation is beautiful. Friendly staff, cozy atmosphere, and definitely worth the visit. Easily one of the best cheesecakes I’ve ever had. I’ll be coming back every time I’m in Madrid! 🧀🍰

It looks cute. However, the experience was not good. The waiters seem stressed even though the place was half empty. I requested a table for one and I was ignored while they accommodated people that arrived after (they take no reservations and the whole lower floor was empty). The food was ok but forgettable. Very lame flat white, eggs and bacon were like in any ordinary cafeteria.
Joe Robinsmith★★★★★
Made it before it got really busy. Food was out very quickly. The Andalusian breakfast with Iberian ham on whole wheat with grated tomato was incredibly delicious. The natural breakfast of yogurt with fruits and seeds was so tasty. Cappuccino was piled high with foamy milk. Loved it.

Great breakfast spot in Madrid! Excellent coffee, delicious pastries, and a cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend🥰

Very affordable price with good breakfast, simple and makes you full! It’s a hidden gem in the city center if you want to have some traditional breakfast without paying 20 euros
Maria Mendieta★☆☆☆☆
Maybe I came on a bad day, but the food was terrible. I ordered the Desayuno Americano and it was barely edible. The “bacon” was just heated up slices of ham, so salty it was inedible for me. The scrambled eggs were just ok. The toast was tough and over toasted. The coffee was burnt and again barely drinkable. The juice was fine. The bacon/ham was actually barely cooked at first and I had to send it back. (Attached picture is of the bacon AFTER they refried it, still looks terrible). No apology. Overall very disappointing. Do not recommend at all.

Ive come here three times, today and yesterday and the day before, and I'll definitely be back again. The food is delicious but the best part was my interaction with the staff. They are so kind and patient as I practice my Spanish and they always get everything perfect! The food is absolutely delicious and affordable! The other day I had the ham and brie cheese croissant and added an egg. Yesterday I had salmon and cream cheese on toast and added avocado. And today I had scrambled eggs. Everything is fresh and good quality. All of the days I ordered iced coffee and it was made perfectly! Looking forward to coming back and trying more!

Amazing breakfasts! The breakfasts here are fantastic — a wide variety of options, always tasty and very filling. The prices are reasonable, and the coffee and pastries are absolutely delicious. We had breakfast here at least five times and enjoyed it every single time. Highly recommended!
Sveto Rakovic★★★☆☆
A solid breakfast spot in town. What they lack is better coffee (which is quite bad) and heating inside the space because it is quite cold in winter due to the open doors. As the best of the offer, I single out the sandwiches, which are quite large, and the toasted bread is so soft and feels like butter. The staff is friendly, works quickly, but they should learn at least the basics of English.

We arrived home ten days ago and the bag and products were amazingly intact and well preserved!! I call them “ The Around the World Torrons”

Taste tests were great. I wasn’t sure about a certain product and was able taste it by asking the staff. They had a Buy One Get One promotion going on and green mold appeared to be growing on those products, affecting each item unevenly.

Absolutely delicious. A perfect souvenir to remember Madrid by. I wasn't even going to buy anything, went it for someone else. But once I tried a few, I understood this is nothing like a typical simple nougat. It's their Queen. Hundreds of flavours, a place with a rich tradition since 1775. And the staff is great, they can tell you all about it, you get to have a nougat tour and taste some of them before buying. It's almost like a nougat museum. 😊 A perfect delicious souvenir.

I have had tiramisu from various places but to be honest the tiramisu from the sweet Merisu place is now one of my favorites. Just a small shop with the tiramisu making show in front of you and it’s so delicious and amazing♥️♥️♥️😍😍🫠🫠🫠

Honestly, the best tiramisu I’ve ever had! Super fresh, smooth, and perfectly balanced – you can really tell it’s made on the spot, not your typical “standard” version. The cream is light and silky, and the coffee flavor is just right. It’s not too sweet or too heavy, just perfect. The kind of dessert you finish and immediately wish you had another one 😄 Highly recommended!

Essential Tips for Enjoying Bakeries Near Plaza Mayor

Navigating the bakery scene in Madrid requires a bit of local knowledge to ensure you get the freshest products and the best value. Understanding the rhythm of the city will significantly enhance your culinary adventure and help you avoid common tourist pitfalls.

Go Early for the Best Selection
Spanish bakeries bake in the early hours of the morning. If you want a warm pastry straight from the oven, you need to arrive before 10:00 AM. By late afternoon, many of the most popular items, especially the delicate pastries and fresh bread loaves, will be sold out.

Understand the Breakfast Culture
Unlike some countries where breakfast is a heavy sit-down meal, Madrileños often eat breakfast on the go. A typical order is a café con leche paired with a sweet pastry or a tostada. Do not expect elaborate egg dishes; the star of the show here is the baked dough.

Look for the "Obrador" Sign
An "obrador" is a workshop where the dough is actually made on the premises. If you see this sign or can see bakers working in the back, you are in the right place. Many lesser-quality shops simply reheat frozen dough, so prioritizing an obrador ensures you are tasting real craftsmanship.

Embrace the Napolitana
While croissants are popular, the true local favorite is the napolitana. This rectangular pastry, often filled with dark chocolate or pastry cream, is flakier and sweeter than a standard croissant. It is a staple of the Madrid breakfast and a must-try for any visitor.

Ask for "Pan de Pueblo"
If you prefer savory bread over sweets, ask for rustic country bread (pan de pueblo) or a "barra de pan" (baguette-style loaf). Many historic bakeries still use wood-fired ovens for these loaves, resulting in a thick, crunchy crust and a moist, airy interior that is difficult to find elsewhere.

Carry Cash for Small Purchases
While most modern bakeries near Plaza Mayor now accept credit cards, some of the older, more traditional establishments have a minimum purchase requirement for card payments. Carrying a few euros in coins will make your transaction smoother, especially if you are just grabbing a single pastry.

The beauty of exploring these bakeries is that you are participating in a ritual that has defined Madrid for centuries. The plaza may be crowded with tourists, but inside these shops, you stand shoulder to shoulder with locals who have been buying the same bread for generations.

Take your time to wander the side streets, follow the scent of caramelizing sugar, and do not be afraid to point at something you have never seen before. In Madrid, the best memories are often made with a napkin in one hand and a warm pastry in the other.
