Shopping in Gijón is less about sterile malls and more about the vibrant rhythm of Asturian life. The city offers a compelling mix of traditional mercados, independent boutiques, and bustling pedestrian streets that invite you to wander, browse, and discover. Whether you are hunting for regional delicacies, high-street fashion, or unique artisan crafts, this coastal city provides a retail experience deeply rooted in its local character.
The layout of the city makes it exceptionally friendly for shoppers who prefer to explore on foot. The main commercial arteries weave through the historic center and stretch toward the San Lorenzo beach, allowing you to seamlessly combine a day of purchases with coffee breaks and seaside strolls. This walkability transforms a simple errand into a genuine cultural immersion.
Understanding the distinct personality of each district is key to maximizing your time and budget. Some areas cater to luxury and established brands, while others are havens for vintage finds and bohemian aesthetics. Knowing where to go for specific items will save you energy and ensure you leave with exactly what you were hoping to find.
For food lovers, the shopping scene is a treasure trove of Asturian gastronomy. From pungent Cabrales cheese to crisp bottles of sidra and vacuum-packed fabes, these commercial zones offer the perfect opportunity to assemble a gourmet souvenir haul. Bringing a piece of Asturias home is one of the greatest joys of visiting this northern region.
Fashion enthusiasts will find that Gijón punches above its weight regarding style. The city balances international chains with a robust selection of Spanish labels and local designers. The proximity of these stores means you can easily compare styles and prices without relying on public transport or taxis.
Beyond the products themselves, the architecture of these shopping zones adds a layer of aesthetic pleasure. Many streets are lined with glass galleries and historic facades that shelter you from the Atlantic weather, creating a cozy atmosphere that encourages lingering. It is a retail environment that feels distinctly human and unhurried.
Below is a curated guide to the retail landscapes that define the city. These locations represent the best of what Gijón has to offer, ensuring that your shopping itinerary is both efficient and memorable.

Nice mall .. many international fashion shops and there is a Carrefour supermarket inside the mall. The ma closes early at 9:00 PM but the Carrefour closes at 10:00 PM. I didn't see a food lounge as most of the malls. There is IKEA shop also.

When I first visited this mall, it honestly felt kind of dead 😅
I think I’m just used to bigger, busier malls with a lot more people.
But after a while, I realized it actually has pretty much everything you need. There’s a pharmacy, a gym, a supermarket, even an Amazon locker. They also have some arcade games for kids.
The parking is huge too, which is really convenient.
It may not be super lively, but it’s practical and easy to get things done here.
Carlos S.★★☆☆☆
It's small and the stores are meh, but there's a supermarket here if you need one. T-shirt store always has some that make me laugh.
Michael Gilwood★★★★☆
A great little mall with most shops at your fingertips. A nice place to do your chores and relax with the family.
Layla Gonzalez B.★★★★★
Great place to shop, buy groceries, exercise at the gym and they also have Amazon locker☺️

Useful! Has a supermarket, a few toy shops. Use it normally for Alimerka.

El Corte Inglés is an excellent destination for savvy shoppers in January, offering substantial discounts across a wide range of products. The extensive selection and discounted prices make it a prime spot for finding quality items at affordable rates. Whether you're looking for fashion, electronics, or home goods, El Corte Inglés provides a satisfying shopping experience with its January sales.

Wonderful store with friendly helpful staff. Restaurant is good and reasonably priced as well. Grocery section has a very impressive selection of gluten free items. I wish the store in Porto had as good as selection.

Lovely place, lots of brands. I always find there good quality and very nice clothes for my childreen and myself. Must be place for clothes purchases in Gijon.

When you visit El Corte Inglés in Gijon, you know you are in Asturias, friendly staff, very helpful and little hassle.
Carol Pool★★★★★
Always like the corte Ingles. I’ve been to several in Spain in different cities. They almost always have a nice selection of clothes, luggage, sportswear, etc. The one in Gijon also had furniture, a supermarket and most all of them have a little restaurant of some sort which offers food at reasonable prices which is pretty good and very reasonably priced beer and wine.

This is a massive place. I’m not even sure if it’s one big store or more of an area with a lot of different shops and establishments.
The only downside is that it’s a bit far if you’re relying on public transportation. It’s probably much more convenient if you have a car. That said, you can pretty much find everything you need here, so it’s worth the trip if you’re planning to do a lot of shopping.
Darren Wyles★★★★★
Large, spacious, with ample parking, and good public transport links. Intu has it all. There are restaurants, Italian, Mexican, Asian and, of course Spanish. There are also the usual fast food joints, Macdonalds and Burger King. There is something for all budgets. There is a cinema with all the latest films, you can also find some in original language. There is a bowling alley and a big arcade, so many things to do other than shop. Intu also has two supermarkets, one at each end of the shopping centre, Eroski and Mas y Mas (downstairs).
The centre has an area where you can leave the young kids, this area is well supervised, but you might need to wait as it's very popular. There is also an area for the older kids where they can play with fixed tablets. Most of the big stores can be found here, concluding: H&M, footlocker, Zara, apple, fnac, Levi's, Mango, and many others. If you need a coffee, there are several scattered around the centre. If you need an haircut there are both mens and womens. I'm sure I've missed something, so, go along and see for yourself. It's well worth the visit. Btw - IKEA is a couple of minutes walk from the centre.
Tatiana Piterova★★★★★
A big mall with lots of things to do besides shopping. It’s handy that ikea is by its side, always easy to park, but we usually come here during the week. On weekends it may be overcrowded.

Well located.
Large.
It's a shame not all the shops are open.
Pilar Diaz★★★☆☆
The fish counter is getting worse every day... Enormous queues, and now the fishmongers are being trained by their colleagues... Which I don't think is right because they should have specialized training and not ruin the fish we pay for... It's a shame that a supermarket like this doesn't properly train its employees... Furthermore... They're doing everything from restocking and cleaning fish to cutting beef steaks... It's all completely absurd.
Montse Muñoz Mandado★★★☆☆
Many shops are closed, a shame considering what it once was... I imagine the reason they're not making better use of the ground floor is because of the high rent or purchase price... A real pity.
It's well-maintained, though, but almost empty.
Pablo Antonio Hidalgo Gútiez★★★★★
A perfect shopping center in the Natahoyo neighborhood, it has a huge Alimerka supermarket with free parking, a gym, an escape room, and a Tedi store. A large part of it is unused, which is a shame because many years ago it was a central hub for the neighborhood, where hundreds of people came daily to shop in its many stores.
tomas rubio★★★★☆
Alimerka is another store that's not what it used to be. I don't know if it's because of the change of management or because they want to make more profit on the items, but people have less purchasing power and they don't seem to realize it. The employees are friendly and courteous.

Traditional market with vendor stalls offering a wide variety of high quality products. The cheese and charcuterie stands are a highlight, and the fruit and vegetable shops add great color. I enjoyed the morning shopping trip.
Sean E★★★☆☆
could be great but mostly sad. few puestos actually occupied or open on a Mondayat 12.
Eduardo Skinner★★★★☆
I just wish they had more selection. It should be a buzzing spot for the city instead it's just an average place more. Food has good quality, you can buy amazing fish and cheese and meat but you can do the same thing in many other places minus the queue... It feels a bit sad to see the place half deserted too. The city should promote and help small businesses to get on to the market to turn it into what deserves to be
Francisco Barroca★★★★★
Interesting historical market with lots of variety of fish, meat, dairy, flowers, seafood,...you bring it on! It is excellent to buy food delicatessen and bring it back home.

A wonderful shop with great quirky things you thought you'd never need. The owner herself was great fun, full of joy and laughter, and most generous...

I discovered La Inquieta and I honestly loved it. They have incredibly original home decor, unlike anything you'd find in a typical store. The quality of each item and the impeccable taste in every detail are truly remarkable.
Plus, the service was outstanding. Guillermo was fantastic, super friendly, and always ready to help with recommendations and answer any questions. It's wonderful to find places like this where they not only sell beautiful things but also make you feel well taken care of.
I will definitely shop there again. Highly recommended if you want to add a special touch of personality to your home.
Conchi Escalante★★★★★
We love local businesses, and this shop caught our eye from the street. It's near the Plazuela de San Miguel. A charming home decor shop, and the staff were incredibly friendly even after we arrived at closing time.
We'll definitely be back because there was so much more to see: very original tableware, paintings, prints… If you like shops that offer something extra, this is the place to visit when you're in Gijón. Excellent value for money.
Mónica Maiquez Navarro★★★★★
This is my first purchase from this store, and honestly, the experience couldn't have been better.
I don't live in Gijón, but their home decor items are so beautiful! I'm already looking forward to visiting Asturias again just to see this store! I'd especially like to highlight the service, the customer service, and the incredibly fast shipping—it arrived in just one day!
There are so few stores like this left; congratulations!

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this store. I purchased a bag for €18, which is kinda hefty but I guess a fair price point for handmade/artistic item. However, the shoulder strap already began to tear on the very first day, during normal use (just carrying groceries).
When I returned the next day to request a refund, the clerk started arguing with me.
2/5 stars because I was eventually offered an exchange for a different design and model, but the alternative wasn't one I'd have chosen at this price point.

I joined the bachelorette party and was absolutely thrilled! The fabric printing workshop was a total success; Raquel was wonderful and helped us all create beautiful fabric keepsakes. The brunch at the end was delicious! 🙂 It's a fantastic place to both enjoy the workshops and browse the shop for unique gifts. Highly recommended!

A shop with a variety of gift ideas and also very entertaining workshops. I went for a bachelorette party and we had a great time. Raquel was wonderful, helping us all make beautiful fabric prints. And we finished with a delicious brunch!
I highly recommend both visiting the shop and the workshops!

SPECTACULAR!!!
It's a beautiful place that you have to visit several times to truly see everything it has. Every corner of the shop holds something special, it has its own unique character, and I love that. The owner is a wonderful person who goes out of her way to give the best customer service... My house has never looked as beautiful as it does now, nor have I been so happy, after acquiring prints by incredible illustrators... Candles that are simply amazing, natural cosmetics that have transformed my skin, and beautiful little details, from the ceramics she makes herself by hand to notebooks and decorative water bottles... Without a doubt, it's become my go-to place since I found it.
I can only thank you endlessly!
Irene B.★★★★★
My go-to shop whenever I want to find a special gift. I've bought from them four times now, and every single time it's been a complete success. Honestly, everything sold at Vintastic has a special and incredibly original touch. I never tire of recommending this shop (and the people who take my advice and go... they always write to tell me it was a fantastic find!). It's definitely one of the best places in all of Gijón; you always find something that fits the idea you have in mind. It doesn't matter if it's a gift for children, adults, parents, your partner, friends... Plus, the owner puts so much love and kindness into every detail. I hope this little neighborhood shop always does well; it deserves nothing less! 😊

Excellent! Professional in explaining all the different type of meat, professional in ageing meat, I took a rubia gallega, 8 years, 90 days Real maturation, simply amazing, I think the best meat I had so far, taste, tenderness, incredible. The advice given on the cooking very precious! Not even 1 drop of blood after cutting…. Really good value for money, prices are really fair for what you get! MEAT IN ANOTHER UNIVERSE.
I thought I'd eaten dry-aged beef, no way!! I'd dreamt it, until I tasted the meat at this place. Seeing is believing.
I went to a tasting they do for groups of ten people and I'm still salivating the next day.
So delicious, such presence, such a taste on my mouth and palate.
A friend had told me about this place and set high expectations, and they were exceeded beyond them.
Our host, Didier, who prepares the meat, made it very clear that he's a master of the subject, demonstrating a profound knowledge of the product.
And his team was impeccable, with exquisite service.
I'll be back again and again.
Thank you and best of luck with the new project, which I'm already eager to see become a reality.
KARIM'S GIJÓN★★★★★
I bought some 70-day aged beef and it was incredible; you can really tell when the product is high quality.
Plus, the service was a 10/10. They were incredibly helpful and gave me excellent advice. They also told me they've opened a new restaurant, Madurado Gijón, where they prepare their own aged beef. I'm already planning to go and try it!
Tips for Shopping in Gijón
To navigate the retail landscape like a local, it helps to understand the nuances of Spanish commerce, particularly the sacred hours of the siesta and the unique tax-free opportunities available to visitors. The following advice will help you avoid common tourist pitfalls and make your shopping experience smoother and more rewarding.
1. Respect the Siesta Hours
Many smaller, independent shops in Gijón close between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Plan your major shopping for the morning or late afternoon. Larger department stores and chain retailers in the main commercial zones typically remain open all day, but if you want to visit a specific boutique, check their hours in advance.
2. Look for the "Rebajas"
If you are visiting in January/February or July/August, you are in luck. These are the official sales seasons in Spain. Discounts start modestly but can reach up to 70% off as the weeks progress. Look for red "Rebajas" signs in shop windows for the best bargains on Spanish leather goods and clothing.
3. Claim Your Tax Refund
Non-EU residents can reclaim the IVA (Value Added Tax) on purchases over €90.01 from a single retailer. Always carry your passport when shopping and ask for a "Tax Free" form. This can save you a significant percentage on luxury items, electronics, or large clothing hauls.
4. Bring Your Own Bag
While plastic bags are still sometimes available for a small fee, bringing a sturdy tote bag is more sustainable and practical. If you plan to visit the markets or grocery stores for local delicacies, a reusable bag with a flat bottom is ideal for carrying bottles of cider or jars of preserved seafood.
5. Explore Beyond the Main Streets
The best finds are often tucked away on side streets branching off the main pedestrian avenues. Don’t be afraid to wander into the smaller alleyways of the old town. Here, you will find hidden artisan workshops, vintage bookstores, and concept stores that offer truly unique gifts you won’t find anywhere else.
The joy of shopping in Gijón lies in the pause between purchases. Allow yourself to sit at a sidrería terrace with your bags at your feet, watching the world go by. This balance of commerce and leisure is what makes the city so attractive to those who dislike the frantic pace of larger capitals.
Whether you leave with a new wardrobe, a suitcase full of Asturian cheese, or simply a handcrafted piece of pottery, the memory of wandering these vibrant streets will stay with you. Gijón offers a retail experience that feels personal, authentic, and refreshingly grounded in the traditions of northern Spain.
