10 Best Breakfast and Brunch Near Plaza Mayor

Waking up near Madrid’s Plaza Mayor places you at the historic and geographic heart of the city. While the grand square is surrounded by centuries of history, it is also a gateway to some of the most satisfying morning meals in the capital. From traditional Spanish staples to modern international fare, the surrounding neighborhoods of Sol, La Latina, and Austrias offer a dense concentration of dining options that cater to every kind of morning appetite.

Finding a quality breakfast in such a touristic hub can be tricky, as not every establishment lives up to the grandeur of the architecture. You want to avoid the overpriced tourist traps with stale pastries and watered-down coffee. Instead, you should look for the spots where locals linger over their café con leche, where the tortilla is still slightly runny, and where the brunch cocktails are poured with precision.

The Spanish breakfast culture is unique, often starting light with a pastry and coffee before evolving into a heartier mid-morning almuerzo. However, the international influence in Madrid has given rise to a vibrant brunch scene that rivals London or New York. Whether you are craving churros dipped in thick chocolate, smashed avocado on sourdough, or a full English fry-up, the area around Plaza Mayor has you covered.

This guide focuses on quality, atmosphere, and value to ensure you start your day on the right foot. We have evaluated the texture of the bread, the quality of the coffee beans, and the consistency of the service. The goal is to help you navigate the narrow cobblestone streets and find the tables worth waiting for.

Because the area is so walkable, you can easily combine your breakfast with a morning stroll through the Royal Palace gardens or the El Rastro flea market on Sundays. The proximity of these eateries to the main square means you are never more than a few minutes away from a memorable meal. You can fuel up properly before tackling the art museums or the shopping districts.

Below, you will find a curated selection of the ten best options, ranging from historic institutions to trendy health-focused cafes. Each entry offers something distinct, ensuring that whether you are an early riser or a late bruncher, your cravings will be satisfied. These are the places that consistently deliver on flavor and atmosphere.

Let’s dive into the specific spots that make this neighborhood a breakfast paradise. After the list, we will also share some essential local tips to help you navigate the morning dining scene like a Madrileño, ensuring you get the best experience possible.

We went there as a couple only looking for some great cocktails (one of their strongest points) and sweets. Ainoha who served us was very accommodating and willing to go above and beyond. 5 stars for her. What we did not appreciate - hence my low rating: - we had to wait at least 20 minutes. For good restaurants that’s understandable. However there were 4 seats available upstairs (two at the bar, two at a free table). 5 people waiting before us, none of them seated - nor us - at these free seats. When we finally got seated downstairs there were two other free tables with 4 more free seats. - the cocktail guy (or girl 🤍) was free today. So they had no cocktails. Unacceptable for such a busy place in the middle of Madrid - we had two of the menu’s stars: the pistachio pancakes and the cinnamon rolls. The pancakes were a disappointment for me - three pancakes, good looking, with a bit of pistachio frosting and icecream on top. But tasteless otherwise. I would not recommend. I appreciated the roll - very sweet for my husband yet ok for me. - very difficult to drink coffee out of the very nice looking cups I would definitely not recommend nor come again.

This breakfast spot was absolutely incredible!! We just needed a place that opened early before we left for the airport, and we were very happy for an 8am opening. My daughter had the burger (yes, for breakfast, and she wasn’t the only one!) and I had the French toast. I didn’t get to taste the burger because it was completely gone before I had a chance to ask for a bite. But the French toast, besides the beautiful display, came with a little scoop of ice cream that nicely replaced the need for syrup, plus fresh strawberries and blueberries and a caramelized banana. The details were so nicely done. Even my cappuccino was so beautifully crafted! I cannot recommend this place enough. Every food item that came out to other tables looks delicious and I’m sending my other daughter here when she studies in Madrid next semester!

It’s a popular tourist spot, so it’s usually bustling with visitors, partly because of its reputation and the hype surrounding it. The atmosphere is lively, but it definitely feels quite touristy. The food is decent overall, although the menu leans heavily toward desserts. One thing I didn’t particularly like is their practice of encouraging customers to leave a five-star review at the end of the meal. When it seems to be a standard part of the experience, it takes away some of the authenticity and usefulness of the reviews when deciding whether to visit. The approach to tipping also felt a bit excessive. Overall, the food is decent, but considering the crowds and potential wait, I’m not sure the experience is worth the hype.

Brunch here ! Such a good spot. Amazing food, service, and I loved the vibes/ decor. The salmon Benedict was super fresh, and the potato waffle with truffle mushroom is a must if you love mushrooms. The Pistachio Obsession café was creamy, aesthetic, and honestly so good. Alejandro gave great service, friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Would definitely go back.
The Foodie Crusader★★★★★
This place had a bit of a wait, but i think it was worth it. Its very nice and cozy inside. The staff is nice and friendly. The food was excellent. The latte was delicious. The Spanish omelet was super yummy. It basically reminds me of potatoes au gratin wrapped with a thin sheet of egg. I got mine with pork belly and it was delicious and filling for me. We ordered the French toast by mistake but it worked out for us. It was absolutely delicious. The toast was soft, sweet, and flavorful, the ice cream and fresh berries made it all come together nicely. The prices are reasonable. I would definitely come back, and i would make this a must visit.

Absolutely best salmon eggs Benedict ever. The coconut smoothie was delicious as well; I drank it sooo fast. 10/10 service and cutest seating areas. Loved getting a seat by the window and being able to have brunch with a gorgeous view. Perfect place to stop by after touring the palace!

Very good breakfast and brunch with fresh, quality ingredients and well-prepared dishes. The pastries and coffee were excellent, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. A great place to start the day, and one I’d happily visit again.

We were rushing to get to the Royal Palace on Tuesday morning and we were in dire need of some breakfast after a long day of travel the night before. We looked up some reviews and saw this place at a 4.9 and I honestly think it should have a perfect five. We had what we thought was the best breakfast we had in our 18 days of Europe here. The food was absolutely delicious, freshly cooked, presented well, And very tasty. The service was quick and once we told the waiter that we were in a rush, we were in and out in about 40 min, which is exactly what we needed to do. There are only about 15 tables in the restaurant and it is a small intimate venue but the location is almost perfect if you're looking for a place to stop or visiting the Royal Palace of Madrid. Definitely consider it if you are in the area.
Jacky Wu★★★★★
The food was absolutely delicious and full of authentic Vietnamese flavor. The pho was rich and comforting, the spring rolls were fresh and crispy, and the service was warm and attentive. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, and everything felt clean and welcoming. I really enjoyed my dining experience here and would definitely come back again. Highly recommended!

This place is so famous in Madrid. The dishes are simply perfect, they have the right balance between softness and consistency, making them absolutely irresistible. Plus, the taste is incredible and really so high quality on the ingredients The atmosphere is so chill, and the service is friendly. One of the best pancake experiences I’ve ever had. Highly recommended! When I return to Madrid, I’ll definitely visit again.

Absolutely outstanding experience from start to finish! The food was incredible—not only beautifully presented but also packed with flavor. Every dish was fresh, creative, and cooked to perfection. You can really tell that a lot of care goes into both the ingredients and the presentation. The service was just as impressive. The staff were professional, attentive, and genuinely willing to help with recommendations and make sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. They struck the perfect balance between being attentive without being intrusive. If you’re looking for a place with amazing food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere, this is definitely worth a visit. We’ll absolutely be coming back. Highly recommended!
Neeka Sabri★★★★★
We had such a great experience at Brunchit! I ordered the Avocado Feast, and my husband had the smashed croissant with avocado and poached egg. Both dishes were incredibly fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. The presentation was just as impressive as the taste. If you’re like me and believe that beautiful plating is part of the dining experience, you’ll love this place. Our waitress was so attentive and welcoming, and the atmosphere was wonderful. We sat on the patio with a lovely view of the square, which made for the perfect relaxing breakfast. The only disappointing part was that we didn’t get to try the pancakes. We heard they’re amazing, and based on how good everything else was, I have no doubt they live up to the hype. That’s just another reason to come back!
Alisa Costa★★★★★
This was our first meal when we arrived in Centre Madrid and it did not disappoint. Fresh ingredients and complex flavors were shared across the table. The fresh juices were delicious and the egg options were perfect. Service was friendly and helpful. Gluten free bread was available.
Danielle Gramlich★★★★★
We decided to stop here after good reviews for breakfast, and were blown away. I got the Smash Croissant and when I tell you the description and what you imagine doesn’t even come close to how delicious this meal was… I can’t even put it into words. Cristina took amazing care of us and we left happy and full!
Cem Ilgazlı★★★★★
Christina was friendly, helpful, and very efficient. She found me a table within seconds and took my order promptly. The menu is excellent for brunch, offering a great variety of options. The savory pancakes were delicious. Although the prices are a bit on the higher side, the portions are very generous, making it good value overall. The interior design is beautiful, modern, and very clean, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

What a great brunch spot! Walking in during the very late morning on a Friday in September, I got a seat right away. The space is small, but they use the space well to fit a handful of small tables. The server was very quick and friendly. He recommended the chilaquiles with beef and wow. It was excellent as was the pistachio latte. I’d definitely go back!
Jacques van Niekerk★★★★★
What a wonderful find in the heart of La Latina! Cocuiza is a charming, quaint brunch spot where it’s immediately clear that real time, care, and attention go into every dish. Everything we tried was meticulously prepared and beautifully presented, with interesting flavour combinations that were both creative and absolutely delicious. The recommendations were excellent and made the whole experience even better. The owner was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and took the time to explain everything perfectly, which added such a personal touch to our visit. A truly special little place with fantastic food, unique flavours, and genuine hospitality. Highly recommended — we will definitely be coming back!
Emmett Grames★★★★★
Surprisingly large portions, be ready to share if you order one of the pancake stacks. Really good food, fresh drinks, and service, the prices are a bit higher but for the quantity and quality it really is worth it. The staff were very friendly. We got there early on a Sunday, but if you plan to go mid-morning you might want to call ahead and reserve a table, they were very busy when we left, with a line out the door.
Olivia Seward★★★★★
Best breakfast place in Madrid. If you care about food…come here!! The pancakes were the best I’ve ever had in my life- perfect flavor and perfect texture. The hash browns were also great too. I will be coming back to try more on the menu. Also mentioning there’s self serve water which is great!! So happy we found this spot.
Sarah Terry★★★★★
I got the watermelon juice & sweet salty chicken. This is way better than any chicken & waffles I’ve had in the USA. Amazing. Great sauce& flavor. I like the coleslaw on it too. It was very busy so I would recommend making a reservation.

He had a wonderful breakfast in the Brunch colors opera. Great atmosphere . Love the decoration. The food was delicious! The down side for us that there wasn’t any high chair for our little kids so in was less comfortable for us.
Yukta Sharma★★★★★
Everything was perfect! We sat at this beautiful place , it was amazing. The food was good too! And The service was so so nice! The pancakes could have been better though, they were a little dry.
Björn Nowack★★★★★
We have been here for breakfast and it was just delicious. Music was great as well and our waiter. Check out the smoothies. So good with coconut water 🙃
Aleksandra Kureń★★★★★
A beautiful place and a great spot for breakfast/brunch in Madrid. The restaurant offers great options for people who like to have both savory & sweet breakfast for a good price. We’ve had amazing toast with avocado and hummus, acai bowl with fruits and chocolate, freshly squeezed orange juice and tea, all for 17€. The owner is really kind and has a great vibe. We’ve been really sorry we couldn’t squeeze in another breakfast in this place because of an early flight. 10/10, would definitely recommend!
Jem★★★★★
We got the jam toast and the salmon toast, very well executed, super tasty! Service was awesome, our server was super friendly!

Best breakfast in Madrid. We loved everything. It tasted healthy and fresh. The coffee was good too. You won’t go wrong. We sat outside and loved the morning vibe of everyone headed to work.
Ksenia Held★★★★★
I’m starting to think all the food in Madrid is out of this world, but Scarlett really stands out. This breakfast and brunch spot is awesome! They have an amazing selection of specialty coffee and a huge variety of brunch options to choose from. Even though the place was completely full, the service was impressively fast. We tried the Benedict Ibérico and the Bagel Ibérico, and both were absolutely incredible. If you're looking for a high-quality brunch with a great atmosphere, this is a must-visit!
Cristina Mitroiu★★★★★
The place looks good inside. They also have a terrace outside. The food is good, both the eggs benedict and the chicken salad. I also had pancakes for dessert, they were also very good, the chocolate ones. The staff is friendly.
Wadad Lahad★★★★☆
A nice place in Madrid to enjoy your coffee and breakfast. The place has an indoor and outdoor. The place is always busy. The service is very good and fast. The coffee taste is good. Their variety of toasts are delicious.
Sophia Robbie★★★★★
We stumbled upon this place while walking by and decided to give it a try. We were delighted with our decision. It’s fantastic that they serve breakfast all day. My husband opted for a breakfast meal, while I chose the chicken masala. I must say, it was an absolute delight. Unlike many other places we visited, this one offered chai lattes, which was a huge relief. I was thrilled to find a place that served chai lattes, and it turned out to be an incredible experience.

😍 THIS PLACE WAS INCREDIBLE! Again, I found this via TikTok, and I am sooo pleased that I managed to find somewhere so good… Myself and my friend actually decided to eat there on both days we were there! The food was just incredible, flavourful, presented beautifully and reasonably priced! Just look at the photos for justification. Thank you for looking g after us! 👍🏻
Aloysia “AJ” Jean★★★★★
One of the best chain brunch spots (especially for tourists). Enjoyed having breakfast here twice, but this location was the best by far. The atmosphere and decor made everything so lovely and quaint. The food was the star of the show - very filling portions, a great selection, and very tasty. Highly recommend the Shaksuka or any of the eggs benedict. The drink menu was equally good.
Mahmoud Ayoub★★★★★
I ordered the 'Vital' from the breakfast menu, eggs, cheese, and avocado on toast. It was delicious and perfectly balanced. The meal includes tea or coffee, and the Americano coffee was great too. I wanted something sweet to finish, so I got a cinnamon roll with classic syrup and toppings; it was amazing! The staff was very friendly. Highly recommended!
Maestro Isa★★★★☆
The place is known as breakfast restaurant, but they are serving multiple sweet dishes with cakes variety. You can get the coffee, milk or tea as complimentary along with each breakfast dish. Better to go early as most of the time there will be waiting line of 20 to 30 minutes, However the reservation is not nessesary as they do not take it in consideration.
müge Tutar Özkaya★★★★★
The service was very fast, the food was delicious, and there was a great variety to choose from. The location is also perfect, right in the heart of the city. Overall, a really enjoyable experience.

While visiting Madrid from the UK we visited here everyday for our breakfast! It was only a two minute walk from our hotel and gave both myself and my partner a sense of homeliness and familiarity. With me being a sweet tooth and my partner being more of a hearty meal kind of person, this place fit our taste perfectly. The service was incredible and the ladies who work on the front serving couldn’t be nicer! I would recommend to anyone visiting Madrid to give this restaurant at least one visit, even for one of their amazing coffees. There is always a line out the door so make sure to book!
Dennis★★★★★
We visited EatMyTrip Brunch & Dinner Gran Via in Madrid and really enjoyed it. I had the Rainbow Breakfast and my fiancée had the Tokio Toast, and both dishes were very tasty. The portion sizes were just right – enough to feel satisfied, but not so heavy that you feel too full afterwards. Everything looked nicely prepared and tasted fresh. The smoothie and coffee were also very good. We came without a reservation and waited around 10 minutes, which was totally fine. However, the place was very busy and quite crowded, so I would definitely recommend making a reservation in advance. Overall, a great brunch spot in Madrid with tasty food, good drinks, and a nice concept. Definitely worth a visit.
Robert Şutacu★★★★★
We had such a lovely experience here, the atmosphere is super cozy, perfect for a relaxed brunch. The food was delicious. The Burrata del Huert was absolutely amazing, fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. You can really tell the ingredients are high quality. The espresso was just right too, rich and smooth. What made the experience even more special was Irina, who took care of us. She was incredibly kind, attentive, and had such a positive vibe that truly made a difference. She made us feel welcome and well taken care of.
paolo praolini★★★★☆
We had breakfast here, the display case with pastries was inviting! The two of us sat down for two very good cappuccinos, a slice of Nutella cheesecake, and a cinnamon roll! Delicious, but far from the traditional Italian desserts I love! I then had a freshly squeezed orange juice! A great place!
chanelle mwale★★★★★
Wow, where do I start. I got the fresh forest fruit lemonade which was tart, sweet and refreshing as well as the vanilla latte which was delightful. I went for the Iberico Hollandaise dish and it was beautifully presented, filling, the ham had a wonderful smokey flavour, the eggs were perfectly poached and the rustic potatoes were well cooked, and had great flavour. My dad and sister got the pancakes, I havent seen a stack of oancakes so fluffy! I tried them and they were so delicious, great cakey texture and incredibly filling. We then went for a side of the banana bread which was packed with flavour, you could taste the nutmeg, all spice, cinnamon and it was warm! So so divine. My only complaint is that we were waiting outside for over half an hour, in future it would be great if a member of staff could come outside when there is a queue to manage expectations for the wait time, it was well worth the wait and the service once we were inside was excellent. This is hust something that wouldve made the experience from waiting to eating even better! Thank you, I would come back to Madrid just for this delicious brunch!

One of the best eggs Benedict I’ve had! Perfectly cooked poached eggs. The miso and sichuan oil were a great combination and can’t miss it. We also had the avocado toast with truffle sauce which was great as well. The açaí smoothie was fresh and refreshing too. We ended with an almond cake which was awesome, highly recommend this place!

Absolutely loved this place! The atmosphere was wonderful, warm and welcoming, and our waitress was absolutely lovely and made the whole experience even better. She was so friendly, attentive and kind. I had the bacon sandwich and it was absolutely delicious — fresh, flavorful and perfectly prepared. I would definitely come back and highly recommend this place! ❤️

Thanks Jason for the brilliant service. The Cantonese style scrambled eggs were some of the best I’ve ever had and the ‘soft’ cortado as this cafe cutely calls it was perfection. Brazilian coffee beans brewed just right. Come a bit earlier in the day so you don’t need to wait in line. Interiors are also so charming.
Brianna Pedraza★★★★★
Busy restaurant and there can be a line, but don’t stress and don’t let that deter you from waiting. The wait doesn’t take long! The service here is fantastic, quick and genuine. Very good food and coffee as well. We were very happy with this place and would came back! Thanks to server Cami for helping us have a good experience here
Iryna Shaitanova★★★★☆
Beautiful place with a truly magical atmosphere. I absolutely loved the interior design, the vibe, and the overall feeling of the space. It is one of those places where you instantly feel relaxed and want to stay longer. The staff and service were also excellent, very friendly and attentive. We especially loved the matcha with coconut water. It was delicious and definitely something I would order again. As for the food, it was just okay. We tried the scrambled eggs with avocado and the eggs Benedict. The brunch dishes were decent, but not particularly memorable. Still, I would definitely come back for the atmosphere and would love to try some of the pastries or cakes next time.

I’m currently traveling in Madrid and was so impressed to find this authentic Mexican brunch spot. Every plate is made with love and attention to detail, and the flavors are incredible. It’s definitely a hidden gem! I had the enfrijoladas with an added egg on top, and they were absolutely delicious. I also tried the fresh carrot, orange, and ginger juice — so good. The portions are generous, and everything was beautifully prepared. My friend had the enchiladas, and they were delicious as well. Highly recommend if you’re looking for authentic Mexican brunch in Madrid.

Came across this place on google maps as it was close to where I was staying and Primark. Absolutely delicious and the service was super kind and lovely. The coffee was heaven and the food was to die for. The club Sammy was a stand out. Highly recommend! They have a menu in Spanish and English. Lovely and clean. So good I went twice during my trip to Madrid

Zurch is a must-try gem in Madrid! This place is a hidden gem—small front, but clean and well-organized inside. The food was a flavor bomb! We had the Huevos Rancheros, enchiladas, and a bagel, and everything was fantastic. We left full and completely satisfied. The staff was friendly and helpful. Overall, a very great experience! Highly recommend.

This place is amazing—the service and overall vibe were spot on. I ordered the enchiladas suizas and they were a solid 10/10 very authentic, easily some of the best I’ve ever had. The coffee was great too
Alia Alawi★★★★★
Great breakfast place. The atmosphere is cozy with meutarla colors. The food was delicious. We had the acai bomb and I asked they add peanut butter, thr morning menu (scrambled eggs was fluffy and delicious, cappuccino and a new drink to me the "bumble coffe" which is cold coffee with orange juice and caramel (different but nice). The place us clean and i liked the small garden they have as a decoration. And the staff were friendly and accommodating. Definitely coming back again and highly recommended.

Essential Tips for Breakfast and Brunch in Madrid

Understanding the local rhythm is the key to a successful breakfast near Plaza Mayor. While you can find food at almost any hour, the type of food and the atmosphere changes drastically depending on the time. Here are some practical insights to help you maximize your dining experience, save money, and eat like a local rather than a passing tourist.

1. Embrace the "Menú del Día" Timing
While this guide focuses on breakfast and brunch, note that many traditional Spanish spots switch to their lunch menus around 1:00 PM. If you arrive for brunch at noon, you might be handed a lunch menu. If you want breakfast-specific items, aim to arrive before 11:30 AM to ensure the full morning menu is still available.

2. Look for the "Tortilla Pincho"
For a true local experience, skip the sit-down breakfast plate and look for bars displaying a large, thick Spanish omelet on the counter. Order a pincho de tortilla (a wedge of omelet served on bread). It is the quintessential mid-morning snack for Madrileños, often washed down with a small beer or a caña if it is late enough.

3. Coffee Lingo Matters
Coffee in Madrid is not a "one size fits all" situation. If you want a milky coffee, order a café con leche (half coffee, half milk). If you prefer it stronger with less milk, ask for a cortado. For a simple espresso, order a solo. Knowing these terms will save you from receiving a massive mug of weak American-style coffee when you wanted a punchy espresso.

4. Beware the Terrace Surcharge
Sitting on a terrace overlooking the Plaza Mayor itself is a romantic idea, but it comes at a premium. Many establishments charge a significant surcharge for table service on the square or on busy pedestrian streets. The food is often of lower quality than what you find one street back. It is usually better to admire the view, then walk two blocks away to eat better food for less money.

5. Sunday is Market Day
If your visit coincides with a Sunday, the dynamic of the neighborhood changes entirely due to El Rastro, the massive flea market. The area south of Plaza Mayor becomes incredibly crowded. If you are heading to the market, eat before 10:00 AM to beat the rush, or be prepared to wait in line for the popular brunch spots around La Latina.

6. Tipping is Modest
Unlike in North America, tipping is not percentage-based and is not expected for a simple coffee and pastry. For a sit-down brunch or table service, leaving a few coins—usually 5% to 10% of the bill or just the loose change—is considered a polite gesture of appreciation, but leaving 20% is unnecessary.

Choosing the right spot for your morning meal sets the tone for your entire day of exploring Madrid. Whether you opt for the sugar rush of fresh churros or the slow comfort of a protein-heavy brunch plate, the area surrounding Plaza Mayor offers a culinary microcosm of the city’s evolving tastes.

The best approach is to mix your itinerary: spend one morning indulging in the traditional sweet pastries and strong coffee at a historic bar, and another morning exploring the modern, health-conscious cafes that have taken over the side streets. By doing so, you experience both the soul of old Madrid and the energy of the new city.

With a full stomach and a bit of local knowledge, you will find that the walk from the Plaza Mayor to the Puerta del Sol or the Royal Palace feels effortless. Enjoy the atmosphere, take your time, and remember that in Madrid, breakfast is not just fuel—it is a social ritual to be savored.
