12 Best Coffee Shops Near Plaza Mayor

The area surrounding Plaza Mayor is the pulsing heart of Madrid’s historic core, yet finding a truly great cup of coffee amid the tourist traffic can be surprisingly difficult. While the main square is lined with overpriced terraces designed for people-watching rather than flavor, the narrow, cobbled side streets hide a thriving specialty coffee scene. From traditional Spanish roasters who have been perfecting their craft for decades to modern minimalist spaces experimenting with single-origin beans, the options are more diverse than most visitors realize.

Understanding the local coffee culture is the first step to navigating the area like a local. In Spain, coffee is not just a morning stimulant; it is a ritual that marks the rhythm of the day, from the quick "café solo" at the bar to the leisurely afternoon "café con leche." The neighborhoods radiating out from Plaza Mayor, including La Latina, Sol, and the Literary Quarter, each offer a distinct atmosphere. Knowing whether you want a quiet space to work remotely or a standing bar for a quick espresso will dramatically shape your experience.

For the discerning traveler, the priority is often finding a shop that balances quality with authenticity. Many of the best spots near Plaza Mayor are hidden in plain sight, tucked away on streets that are easy to miss if you are staring at a map. These establishments often source their beans from small farms, roast them locally, and train their baristas to a high standard. They represent a new wave of Spanish coffee culture that respects tradition while embracing global trends.

This guide focuses on venues that are easily walkable from the center of Plaza Mayor, ensuring you never have to stray too far from the main attractions. We have prioritized shops that demonstrate consistency, atmosphere, and a genuine passion for the bean. Whether you are looking for a robust espresso to start your sightseeing or a creamy flat white to warm up during the winter months, this list covers the spectrum of what Madrid has to offer.

We have also considered the practical needs of visitors, such as proximity to public transport, availability of seating, and whether the shop offers light snacks or pastries. Some of these locations are perfect for a quick caffeine fix, while others invite you to linger for an hour with a book. By the time you finish reading, you will know exactly which direction to walk depending on your mood and your coffee preferences.

While the allure of a sunny terrace on the Plaza itself is undeniable, the true gems often require stepping just one block away. Venturing into the side streets not only saves you money but also introduces you to the authentic rhythm of Madrid life. The sound of the grinder, the smell of freshly baked croissants, and the chatter of local residents create an experience that a tourist trap simply cannot replicate.

Below is a curated selection of the best coffee shops near Plaza Mayor, chosen for their quality, service, and unique character. Each entry has been selected to help you avoid the mediocre and discover the memorable.

Your friendly coffee shop around the corner 🙂 The space is so limited so you need to early to get seat, coffee's and service is excellent. I went there 3 times (basically 3 nights in madrid) in a row and i felt like home. If you can able to pay cash you can get %6 discount on top of the bill or you can pay with your credit card. I mostly paid around 10-12 euro-ish depending my order. 1 americano coffee (with great cream) + meal. You can also order fresh cakes, croissants too. People who working in the coffee is so nice and talkative and good ambient music all day.

Lovely spot to stop for a latte and tomato toast. Very friendly atmosphere and they were kind when my spanish wasn’t great, haha. Around 9:30am on a Thursday I was able to sit and people-watch! Thank you. We came back twice!! Pretty small place so I recommend takeaway unless you are a party of 4 or less
Helena Fombella★★★★★
Top-tier spot in the neighborhood for a quick grab-and-go 🍵 Stopped by for a takeaway coco matcha and the execution was spot on: brilliant green hue, velvety microfoam with crisp latte art, and that balanced, clean sweetness without any gritty texture at the bottom. The space itself is cozy and well-equipped (solid La Marzocco setup on the counter, great selection of single-origin beans, and freshly baked pastries lined up) 🥐 Fast service, precise temperature, and zero fluff. Definitely a reliable daily stop if you care about beverage quality. 🍃

The staff were friendly, and the dishes served were very tasty. If you like good bread and coffee, this place is definitely worth checking out. I enjoyed the tomato awokado toast most! The name really charmed me as well — an extra plus for that!

great latte! didn't make my head explode or get my body floating but also genuinely good latte. big latte for €3 is awesome deal too.

Homely atmosphere and solid coffee. It seems to me that not much has been invested in the interior, they are in a nice location and in a beautiful building.
Jackson Gold★★★★★
Absolutely incredible service, I was welcomed very warmly and everything I ate and drank here was amazing. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner! 10/10.
Gustavo Garcia★★★★★
Amazing team running this coffee shop! Service is one of the best in the area. While it is a very touristy location, many of us that live around here frequent it for our daily coffee/breakfast. They have amazing food options and coffee. If the weather is nice you can also sit outside. They are very flexible and accommodating if you need to work a bit on your laptop and they are also dog friendly!

They clearly have preferred customers, and if you’re not a local, they make it obvious. I’m not reviewing the food, but the service. Our first visit was good, which is why we came back. It was busy, so we chose to wait for a table. We asked the staff if we could reserve a table once one became available, but we were told no and that we had to wait until a table was free. So we waited outside the restaurant for about half an hour. When a table finally became available, we sat down. The same staff member then came over and told us the table was actually reserved. He had been holding it for two women who arrived after us and were seated inside. Another table was about to become free, so I went to move there. At the moment I was sitting down and my partner had gone to the restroom, a woman from a nearby table came over and took a chair from our table. The staff did nothing about it, said nothing to her, and only apologized to us, telling us to wait another 20 minutes until something else became available. So after waiting for more than half an hour and seeing two tables become free, we still didn’t get to eat. I would have appreciated a better approach from the staff. If you say that tables cannot be reserved, you shouldn’t then ask me to leave a table I’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, a big disappointment.

A charming little spot in Madrid that offers a sweet escape for weary travelers. The Pistachio Espresso is their signature menu, and it’s the perfect treat to recharge your energy. I’m truly sad that I didn't get to visit more than once during my stay.

The service and atmosphere is lovely to be in. The staff were quick and attentive to my order and made changes if possible. I got an açai bowl, rainbow cheese sandwich, pink and purple latte. I’d get an açai bowl, it was so good. The rainbow sandwich was nice to eat but very bland cheese. But the cheese pull was insane! The lattes are too milky for my liking. The food is great for a quick bite a little pricey but it’s worth the pictures and experience.

I was looking for a cafe to celebrate my daughter’s birthday and I found this place on google. The place is so cute and staff is amazing. We loved it!!! When I told we came for her birthday, staff played a short birthday song for us and light a candle on the cake. Everyone joined and clapped. My daughter was so happy🥹
Kreesa Mhz★★★★★
This café is adorable in every possible way! From the pastel décor and plushies to the beautifully presented drinks, food and everything feels straight out of a fairy tale. The foods are almost too cute to eat—almost. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, which made the experience even better. It’s the perfect spot for photos, a cozy hangout with friends, or just treating yourself to something sweet and cheerful. If you love kawaii vibes, this café is an absolute must-visit!
Frederikke Nielsen★★★☆☆
A unique café with sooo so much to look at. Amazing opportunities for fun pictures, definitely instagram worthy. Food and drinks are nothing too special but a nice touch of kawaii on everything from pancakes formed as bears and sirup figures on drinks ☺️
Skittyluvscake★★★★☆
Super cute cafe! The food was also nice. Hospitality can be improved as the man serving was not so warm and welcoming. He gave the impression that he didn't like working there, which is a pity because the place is really cute and gives off nice vibes. But overall, we were satisfied with what we had ❤️

We had a wonderful experience at Havanna Café in Madrid! The churros were absolutely delicious, and the coffee was excellent. What made our visit even more special was Paola. She was incredibly kind, friendly, and welcoming. Her warm attitude and great communication made us feel comfortable. Thank you, Paola, for your outstanding service—we’ll definitely be back!
Der ECHTE Marian★★★★★
Really solid churros con chocolate to a fair price. Fast and nice service. They could need more power outlets, just one is not perfect if guests want to charge there phone.
Samantha Court★★★★★
Beautiful café with wonderful food and a cozy atmosphere! We ordered drinks and pastries and adored them. Our waitress Nino was incredibly kind, attentive and sweet. I highly recommend Havana Café for a relaxing break from the summer heat!
Shayal Patel★☆☆☆☆
The staff were friendly, but the smoothies were extremely watery and had the consistency of juice rather than smoothies. We ordered six different smoothies, and all of them were the same in terms of consistency. They also appeared to be apple juice-based, even though apple wasn’t listed in the menu descriptions, which could be concerning for those with allergies. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend this place for smoothies.

A tucked away coffee oasis that gives you a break from the crowds. The pastries are also a big plus. They have specialty coffees, dairy-free options (almond, soy milk, lactose-free) and cafe V60 as well. Maria was gracious and helpful, and service with a smile! Muchas Gracias!

🍅The tomato toast was great, the staff were nice and the location is super good.

I really did like the pistachio latte but it comes in a small cup. The pistachio around the cup made the drink really tasty. Hot chocolate was cola cao powder mix so nothing special. Cookies were good.

We’re visiting from the US and this was a recommendation from a local. Coffee is delicious. We got the chicken sandwich to split and it was a perfect portion to hold us over for lunchtime. You have to order at the register/counter everyone is super friendly. They have an English menu which is helpful. After you order at the register/counter, you can sit anywhere and they bring the food over to you. Would highly recommend checking it out. Great vibe in here.
Donald Bell★★★★★
Tastiest cortado I’ve had in my life. Great balance. I could actually taste the brightness and acidity of the espresso. Friendly staff. Cool space to hang out in. Prices are a little high but totally worth it if you’re looking for a premium coffee experience.
Netanel Nesher★★★★★
Great coffee place for a quick coffee and a snack. Nice vibes and friendly people. The avocado toast was simple and very tasty. Good prices as well
Damian Górecki★★★★★
Our first breakfast in Madrid and it was a good choice. Both the bagel and the bread with egg were fresh and tasty. The portions aren't the biggest, but they're fine. The barista knows his coffee, was friendly and will definitely recommend good beans to anyone. Filter coffee is made using an xbloom machine, which is an interesting fact. They also have really good tea. It’s a popular place, but it’s a good one.
Oleg Shestakov★★★★★
Great place to stop for a specialty coffee near the palace. I really enjoyed the Geisha hand brew. It’s on the pricier side at around 9€, but the beans are worth it. It was ripe and full of juicy flavor. I loved it. I was too slow to take a picture of the flat white, but it was made to a high standard with great milk temperature and texture. I definitely recommend this place for coffee enthusiasts!

Found this adorable little coffee shop in the heart of Madrid. If you want no frills and just great coffee this is your jam. Atmosphere: 5 awesome vibe, lots of locals and friends just enjoying coffee and catching up. Food:5 best coffee we had in our two days in Madrid. Smooth and balanced, nothing pretentious. They also had some cakes and pastries. Service:5 friendly and fast.

Great little coffee spot in Madrid. Great selection of coffee choices including Flat White and some local variations like the “cortado” which is a single shot of coffee with the equivalent amount of milk. Pastries were great too. The shop has no seating outside and limited seating inside. As a bonus it has a very clean bathroom.
Colleen McGuigan★★★★★
Stayed inside and loved watching people come in and out and start their day. Had a mochaccino and a freshly baked pistachio croissant (worth the 5-minute wait). It was all delicious.
Eyad K★★★★★
This place was my go-to spot for morning coffee during my time in Madrid. They offer a delightful selection of beans, all freshly roasted. Their baked goods are equally impressive, with the pain au chocolat and cheesecake being must-tries. I always preferred the Colombian V60. The ambiance of the place is cozy and inviting, making it a great spot for work. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the barista is always ready to assist. قهوة مختصة عندهم أنواع بن جيدة، والمخبوزات عندهم لذيذة. جلسة رايقة

The worse coffee I had in Madrid, had a late with oat milk, barely a faint taste of coffee, milky color and just literally oat milk. . Iced version was better. Can’t explain the reviews . Had also a cookie which was fine . Only take away option.
Mel Z★★★★★
I love visiting local coffee shops and I am glad I stopped by! Not only did the barista create a great oatmilk latte, but she was nice, friendly and happy to explain any other coffee drinks. The girl by the stand was not as nice or attentive, but the barista made it worthwhile! Thanks for making a great latte for a long day!
Taoufik Mirkhan★☆☆☆☆
The cappuccino was disappointing. The steamed milk seemed to be poured straight into the cup without proper barista technique, resulting in an unbalanced texture, either overly foamy or too watery, rather than the smooth, creamy consistency expected from a cappuccino.
Melanie Smith★★★★★
Cute chain coffee shop, can find other locations in the city and in Barcelona. Nice that they are opened a bit later than other coffee shops in the area. Very god cold brew.

Completely stumbled upon this place in the Madrid rain - so glad I did!!! Lovely quiet little coffee shop not too far from Palacio Real, with lovely staff and a great iced matcha latte.

This place is amazing! I cannot say enough good things about their service. The honey cake (Medovnik) is absolutely delicious, and don’t even get me started on their delicious ginger mojito… WOW! Nany and Cary certainly added to the greatness of my trip to Madrid. A must-visit when in Madrid! Highly recommend!

Everything delicious!! Especially the juices and the acai! All natural and fresh. Highly recommended, also staff super friendly 🙏❤️
Priyanka Tolia★★★★★
If I could give them 10 stars, I would. Their staff is so patient and friendly. We being vegetarians generally have limited choices and on top of that, it’s hard to find good food in a place where meat eaters have more options. Their staff took such good care of us, explained the options well and served us the most delicious avocado sandwich ever. Their cappuccino was equally amazing. Although they didn’t have chips on their menu but when I asked, they gave us complimentary chips and refused to charge for it. In a place and location that’s full of tourists and patience generally runs thin, this place offered great food and customer service when they could easily go the other way!
Linton Nightingale★★★★☆
Lovely coffee shop in the heart of Madrid de las Austrias District. This clean, quaint cafe has a decent selection of fresh cakes and serves them in generous portions. It's reasonably priced and the service is professional, friendly and always with a smile. I highly recommend the lemon meringue pie.

Highly recommended. Excellent coffee and service. Small place, very basic, but cute touches. I bought, they ground, and I moka-potted the Elpidio - the result best Moka coffee I have ever had - by a huge margin.

Lovely little cafe with quirky furniture and insane coffee. Iykyk. Prices are so reasonable I had to ask him if he was only charging me for one coffee. He confirmed it was two.
Christina Henline★★★★★
Super cute little hidden cafe! They made the perfect oat milk cappuccinos and the orange cake was delicious!
Pedro Carvalheiro★★★★★
We ordered a large Flat White Latte and a large Cappuccino, both were absolutely delicious. The place has a cozy local vibe: many customers seemed to know each other, walked in with their dogs, and chatted casually. A great spot for anyone looking for quality coffee. They also offer beans from Brazil, Nicaragua, and Uganda, which shows their care for variety and origin.

Perfect location, not as expensive as some other restaurants in the square. Friendly service, very pleasant to sit down on a sunny day. The one thing that surprised me, is that the shrimp in my paella seemed to have the black line under the skin (meaning the hadn’t been cleaned inside).
Antoni Jozefkowicz★☆☆☆☆
This place did not live up to its rating. The food was below anything that we ate in Madrid. The calamari with pesto was super oily with almost no taste and some pieces had the consistency of rubber and with each bite I was wondering if I wasn’t chewing on a bottle cap by accident. The server was more interested in talking with friends than attending to us, said friends were drunkenly clearing the tables around us and causing a ruckus. Total waste of time and money do not recommend!

Karla, our server was so attentive and nice! The food had very good seasoning. We tried breaded shrimp, meatballs and potatoes, steak, olives and anchovies. Amazing drinks, Karla was always very attentive and friendly. Next trip to Spain we are definitely coming back. Thank you

The location is superb! Right on the Plaza! The food was good! But the service was excellent. Fernando provided excellent attention to detail. Was polite, and very patient and supportive of me practicing my (very) poor Spanish. I would highly recommend a visit and ask for Fernando.

My favourite Cold Brew in Madrid, just the absolute best. Also one of my favourite coffee places in Madrid. If you are looking for a perfect cup every time, head here. My only hesitation is that sometimes the staff seem a bit unfriendly.

Cute little café with a bakery next to it. It was cozy to sit outside on a sunny day, enjoy good coffee, and just relax. The service was good and fast, especially considering there was only one person working.

Delicious cappuccino!! The cappuccino comes in S, M, or L which I found strange but I got a M and it seemed to be a typical cappuccino size. Beans perfectly roasted, very sweet, the milk foam was also perfect. The barista spoke English and was friendly. Provided the WiFi password which I appreciated. Not much seating but the interior is very cute and with good chill music, it has great vibes if you can get a spot! I bought two bags of coffee to go, the beans were that good. Wish I were staying in Madrid longer so I could come back!

The iced latte here was excellent and remarkably good, can highly recommend going here for great coffee. The space for seating is very limited but still worth a visit.

Tips for Enjoying Coffee Near Plaza Mayor

To make the most of your coffee experience in Madrid, it helps to understand the local etiquette and timing. The way Madrileños drink coffee differs significantly from the "to-go" culture found in other major cities. By following a few simple guidelines, you can save money, drink better coffee, and blend in with the locals.

Order at the bar when possible. In many traditional Spanish cafés, the price of your coffee changes depending on where you consume it. A coffee served at the bar (barra) is often significantly cheaper than the same drink served at a table (mesa) or on a terrace (terraza). If you are just looking for a quick energy boost, stand at the counter like a local; if you want to sit and relax, be prepared to pay a premium for the real estate.

Know your milk ratios. Spanish coffee terminology is precise and differs from Italian or American standards. A "café con leche" is roughly half coffee and half hot milk, similar to a latte. If you prefer less milk, ask for a "cortado," which is a shot of espresso cut with just a splash of warm milk. For a stronger, smaller drink, order a "café solo." Asking for a "latte" may get you a glass of plain milk.

Mind the local schedule. While specialty coffee shops often open early for tourists and remote workers, traditional cafés may not get busy until mid-morning. Lunch is typically eaten late in Spain, around 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, so many locals will have a coffee after their meal rather than before. If you want a quiet experience, avoid the 10:00 AM rush and the post-lunch crowd.

Don’t skip the pastry. Many of the best coffee experiences near Plaza Mayor involve pairing your drink with a traditional Spanish sweet. Look for "palmeras de chocolate" (heart-shaped puff pastry covered in chocolate), "napolitanas" (similar to pain au chocolat), or simple "churros" if they are available. The combination of a bitter espresso and a sweet pastry is a cornerstone of the local breakfast.

Ask for the house recommendation. If you are in a specialty shop and feel overwhelmed by the menu of single-origin beans, do not hesitate to ask the barista. Madrileños working in the specialty coffee scene are generally passionate and happy to guide you. Tell them if you prefer fruity, acidic notes or a chocolatey, nutty profile, and they will help you choose the perfect cup.

Exploring the coffee scene around Plaza Mayor offers a delicious window into the daily life of Madrid. It is a chance to slow down, step away from the crowds, and appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into a simple cup of coffee. Whether you choose a historic roastery or a modern minimalist café, you are participating in a tradition that spans centuries.

Ultimately, the best coffee shop is the one that makes you feel welcome and leaves you ready to explore the city. Use this guide as a starting point, but do not be afraid to wander down an unmarked alley or follow the scent of freshly ground beans. In this part of Madrid, the next great cup is always just around the corner.
