Whether you live on the Côte d’Azur or you are just visiting for a few weeks of Mediterranean sun, knowing where to do your grocery shopping in Nice is essential. The city offers a fascinating mix of traditional French markets, high-end delicatessens, and large-format hypermarkets.
Depending on your neighborhood, your budget, and your dietary preferences, the right store can make a significant difference in the quality of your daily life. Shopping for food in France is not just a chore; it is a cultural experience.
From selecting the perfect wedge of Comté cheese to finding fresh Niçoise produce for a salade niçoise, the supermarkets here cater to food lovers. However, the city is sprawling, and some of the best options are located on the outskirts where parking is easier and the selection is wider.
For tourists staying in vacation rentals or apartments in the Old Town or the Port, convenience often trumps size. You might need a small urban supermarket for daily essentials rather than a massive warehouse.
Conversely, expats and locals living in the northern suburbs often prioritize organic sections, international aisles, and competitive pricing over proximity to the beach. This guide navigates the diverse retail landscape of the French Riviera.
We have curated a list that balances quality, price, location, and unique product offerings. Whether you are hunting for organic vegetables, gluten-free products, or simply the best baguette to accompany your dinner, this list has you covered.
Below, you will find the most reliable and highly-rated supermarkets that Nice has to offer. We have considered factors such as freshness of produce, cleanliness, accessibility, and the availability of local Provençal specialties to ensure you get the best value for your money.

This Carrefour is scuffed as hell 😂😂
In my country (Taiwan) Carrefour is pretty premium with a greater selection than other grocers.
This Carrefour had vibes like a wartime prison. Poor craftsmanship on the refrigeration. Bruised up produce. Moldy roof tiles and weird smells. Are they all like this in France?

Looks like there’s a lot of theft in the area, since they’re constantly checking and are worried people are gonna steal something. Makes for an extremely unpleasant shopping experience; avoid in favor of more relaxed stores.

This Carrefour sells things you can't find at other Carrefours. I get the Elephant brand cold infusion teas and baked soy chips. They sell more imported products than other Carrefours.

Perfectly located in the city center, Carrefour Nice TNL is a spacious and well-organized store that truly has everything you need. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the store offers an impressive range of products from flowers and plants to automotive supplies, groceries, chocolates, fresh vegetables, and organic items.
The store is large, clean, and efficiently managed, with plenty of cash counters to minimize waiting time. Parking is a great bonus, and the fact that it’s open until 10 p.m. makes it even more convenient for customers.
Overall, it’s a perfect spot for all your everyday shopping needs!

Great selection from food to housewares. The store is well laid out and easy to shop.

Incredibly poor customer service. Had a terrible experience with a cashier at a self checkout. I’ve never met a
more arrogant disrespectful and lazy worker. She literally refused to help when we needed help. On top she didn’t remove the security caps from 2 bottles of alcohol.
Terrible experience!
And to the management who responded- I really didn’t enjoy shopping there!

The store is very useful because it has a very good selection of goods and is open late and on Sundays. You can buy fresh baguettes, a lot of ready-made meals, many types of cheese, fruit and wine. After finishing my workout, I stopped by Carrefour, which is conveniently located just across the street. I've shopped here before, and once again the store was clean, well-organized, and fully stocked with fresh products. The fruits, vegetables, and other fresh items looked excellent.
The produce scale wasn't working properly, and the employee in that section seemed a bit frustrated. However, he still took the time to assist everyone waiting, making sure customers could keep moving. I appreciated that.
I also want to compliment the young cashier from Peru. He had such a warm, genuine smile and was exceptionally kind and patient with every customer. I watched how respectfully he treated the person ahead of me, and it made the checkout experience very pleasant. Great customer service deserves recognition.
The only disappointment was the hot chicken and potatoes meal. The potatoes were delicious, but the chicken was unbelievably salty—far too much salt. It was so salty that I couldn't finish it. I truly hope this was just one bad batch because everything else about my visit was excellent. I'll be keeping my receipt and hope the store will replace it on my next visit.
Overall, I'm a loyal Carrefour customer and always enjoy shopping here. Please just take another look at the seasoning on the chicken. Everything else was wonderful!

There are numerous types of Carrefour stores in France. Carrefour City is essentially a neighborhood grocery store concept found in urban locations. It is bigger than a convenience store, but not as big as a supermarket. These stores do not have a meat or seafood department, but do carry produce.
This location is near the center of Nice and has an okay selection. Pricing is higher due to the location, but still relatively reasonable. It is convenient if you are staying or live in the area and want to pick up some essential groceries without traveling too far.

Choice is good but you risk a thermal shock when entering. It is SO COLD inside that the shop clerks have to wear a jumper in the summer (and sit under radiating heater at the cash registers). The shop must have the environmental footprint of a whole mall.

Great store near mall that offers everything. Had little fishy smell upon entering but once you go in, it’s not that strong. We were able to find good perfumes as gifts. Was also close to our Airbnb so was to go place for groceries.

We just bought water/fruit /kefir at the store and had a very bad experience with the store worker (a young guy) at the express checkout. Since we don’t know French and couldn’t understand the instructions on the machine, I asked the guy who works there to help. Instead of coming over to help us, he told us to go to one checkout machine and do it ourselves. He then continued to chat with someone by the entrance. The first machine we tried didn’t work so I asked him to help again but he hand signaled us to the next machine. At the next machine, my husband tried to use the handheld scanner to scan the smaller items and put them into our backpack, but we couldn’t figure out where to scan the bottled water. So we had to ask this person to help us again. This time finally he came over, very impatiently scanned the bottled water and then demanded to check our backpack. He took everything we put in the backpack out and said something to us in French which we didn’t understand at all. He also called the security guard over. It’s until then we realized what he was trying to do to us. This is an extremely offensive action, on top of him being unprofessional, ignoring us at the beginning. The city of Nice welcomes millions of visitors across the world. Although this incident is a bad reflection of this individual and a disgrace of himself, it does leave a bad impression to tourists like us. I suggest the store manager should have a serious conversation with this employee and ensure this will never happen again. I also think some reprimand or punishment should be given to the employee for harassing customers.

I love this place. I'm always wowed at the array of produce. Amazing selection of fresh fish, it's like a fish shop, same with the cheese. The wine selection is like an off licence in itself, never seen so many varieties of water! Delightful shopping. You'll spend a lot that's for sure 😁

I recently visited Monoprix and had a fairly good shopping experience. The store’s central location makes it very convenient, and the spacious layout makes it easy to navigate, helping customers find what they need without hassle. The staff was quick to assist, making the shopping experience pleasant overall.
However, I noticed a very strong fishy smell immediately upon entering the store, which lingered throughout my visit. While I understand that Monoprix offers a wide selection of seafood, I’ve seen other supermarkets manage similar sections in ways that control odors more effectively, so this was a bit disappointing.
Despite slightly higher prices, Monoprix offers a good range of products and maintains a welcoming atmosphere with attentive staff. If the issue with the smell could be addressed, I believe it would make the experience much more enjoyable.

Convenient little grocery store with a surprisingly large array of products, all well presented in a relatively tiny space. On a recent visit, I asked whether or not they had chia seeds and in fact they did and the gentleman stocking shelves stopped what he was doing to point me in the right direction. I have been here on multiple occasions and have found the staff to be helpful and very forgiving of my pathetic attempts at speaking French.

Unfortunately, despite having visited many countries and interacted with people from different cultures and backgrounds, what happened today at Carrefour Nice TNL was truly disappointing and unworthy of a global company like Carrefour.
We fully respect store rules and opening hours. My wife and I entered the store just a few minutes before closing simply to buy laundry detergent. The entrance doors were still open, and immediately upon entering, the cashier loudly said: “Sir, you only have two minutes, we are closing.”
The issue was not the instruction itself, but the tone and manner in which it was delivered. It felt unnecessarily rude and embarrassing, especially as everyone around us turned to look at us. My wife and I felt extremely uncomfortable and humiliated, as if we were unwelcome customers and the message was essentially: “We are about to close, we do not want to serve you.”
It was a very unfortunate and disappointing experience, especially from a company with Carrefour’s international reputation.
Yuwei Wang★☆☆☆☆
Very rude stuff, it’s unbelievable how unpleasant it can be just to buy a bottle of water.
I wanted to pay by card but the stuff told me I can’t because it was only 0.6 euro. So I gave them cash, but the lady was showing a shocking face and said what do you want me to do with 20 euro cash. Excuse me?? I’m sorry but I have never seen any shop not accepting card or cash. In the end I only have another 0.5 euro coin and they accepted it. How ridiculous this business is run.
Angela Brennan★☆☆☆☆
Older woman white-ish blonde hair was very rude to our family while ringing us up. Very bad customer service. While loading our items she kept motioning with her hand to hurry up. Do not feel comfortable coming back to buy groceries here. Will choose a different market to spend my money.

What a stroke of good luck to discover that this will be our closest supermarket! It’s big, there are a lot of food choices (you get lost in the yoghurt section), produce is rather good (except you have to weigh and tag it before going to the cash register). This store is openly hostile toward Asian customers.
First, an employee shouted at me not to open the bread display cabinet — which is absurd, because I never opened it in the first place. What exactly made them think I did?
Then another employee demanded to inspect our backpacks. Under the laws of most countries, supermarket staff have no authority to conduct searches of customers’ personal belongings. Such behavior is a serious violation of personal rights and dignity.
The way we were singled out and treated was discriminatory, humiliating, and completely unacceptable. This store should be ashamed of the way it treats Asian customers.

Carrefour City on Rue Cassini is conveniently located next to my hotel, Ibis. The staff are friendly, creating a welcoming atmosphere. They offer a great selection of items at good prices, and their long opening hours ensure accessibility. I particularly enjoy their always fresh baked and grilled goods. While it may be slightly more expensive than other shops, the convenience makes it worth it. I love coming here for my daily needs.

Tips for Grocery Shopping in Nice
To make your shopping experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible, it helps to understand a few local nuances. The French supermarket system operates slightly differently than in the US or the UK, particularly regarding payment, packaging, and peak hours. Knowing these details will save you time and prevent frustration at the checkout counter.
1). Bring Your Own Bags and a Euro Coin: Plastic bags are largely phased out in France. While you can purchase reusable bags at the register, it is best to bring your own. Additionally, you will usually need a €1 coin to unlock a shopping trolley; the coin is returned when you plug the chain back in.
2). Weigh Your Produce: In most French supermarkets, you must weigh your fruits and vegetables yourself. Look for the digital scales in the produce section, select the corresponding image on the screen, and place the bag on the scale to print a price sticker. If you forget, the cashier may send you back.
3). Check the Lunchtime Closures: While large hypermarkets on the outskirts stay open all day, many smaller city-center supermarkets close for lunch between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM. Plan your shopping accordingly to avoid arriving at locked doors.
4). Understand the Milk and Eggs: You will notice that fresh milk and eggs are often stored on regular shelves rather than in refrigerators. This is standard practice in France due to different pasteurization and washing processes. They are perfectly safe to buy and store at room temperature.
5). Look for “Drive” Services: If you have a car, many larger supermarkets like E.Leclerc or Carrefour offer “Drive” services. You order your groceries online and pick them up at a designated warehouse without leaving your vehicle. This is a huge time-saver for big weekly shops.
Navigating the supermarket scene in Nice is the first step to living like a local. By choosing the right store based on your location and needs, you can enjoy the incredible bounty of the French Riviera without the stress.
Whether you prefer the charm of a local market or the efficiency of a modern hypermarket, Nice offers a shopping experience for every type of visitor and resident. Enjoy the flavors of the south of France.
