12 Best Seafood Restaurants in Peñíscola

Peñíscola is more than just a postcard-perfect medieval town on the Castellón coast. It is a place where the Mediterranean has shaped not only the landscape but also the local identity, and nowhere is that more evident than in its food culture. Seafood here is not a trend or a tourist gimmick; it is the foundation of family gatherings, festival tables, and the daily rhythm of the working harbor.

The town’s unique geography, with its rocky headland, sandy isthmus, and protected port, gives local fishermen access to a remarkable variety of species. From deep-water rockfish to prized red prawns and delicate squid, the daily catch is often sold within hours of the boats returning to shore. This proximity between sea and table is what makes dining in Peñíscola so distinctive.

Many visitors arrive expecting standard coastal fare, but Peñíscola rewards those who look beyond the obvious. Traditional recipes such as suquet de peix, arrossejat, and all i pebre reflect centuries of maritime influence and local agricultural produce. The best kitchens balance these time-honored preparations with modern technique and a deep respect for the raw material.

Choosing where to eat can be overwhelming, especially in a town with so many options facing the sea. The most visible restaurants are not always the most authentic, and a waterfront terrace does not guarantee a memorable meal. A little local knowledge goes a long way toward finding places where the seafood is handled with care and the atmosphere feels genuine.

What follows is a carefully selected guide to some of the most rewarding seafood experiences in Peñíscola. The recommendations reflect a mix of classic harbor-side institutions, family-run dining rooms, and refined spaces where local fish is treated with contemporary flair. Each has been chosen for its consistency, sourcing, and connection to the town’s culinary heritage.

Whether you are planning a long lunch after a morning at the beach or a special dinner inside the old town walls, this list is designed to help you eat well and avoid the common tourist traps. The focus is on quality seafood, honest cooking, and the kind of hospitality that makes you want to return.

Take your time with these choices, and do not be afraid to ask about the catch of the day. In Peñíscola, the best meal is often the one that is not on the printed menu.

Food was good, service was okay for starters. Friendly staff and with an eye out for their customers. But. When I asked to take my food away, they handed me and my partner a plastic box each and asked us to pack our own food, then insisted to try to convince us we wanted shots

we ordered the seafood paella, fried baby squid, marinara mussels, & grilled octopus (forgot to take a pic). the baby squid & marinara mussels were delicious & tastes very fresh & well-cooked! (not rubbery at all) but sadly the paella was a huge disappointment. the dish was so salty it tasted like we were drinking seawater. although the seafood was good, it was almost inedible because of the sodium content so we didn’t finish it. such a waste because it cost €30 ): the grilled octopus with vegetables was also very salty, although well-cooked. in total we spent €68 for four people
Jan Servaes★★★☆☆
We went there around 12 o clock. Maybe a bit too early because the meat (entrecote, steak,… ) wasn’t delivered yet. So we had to order something else. I ordered the entire octopus (grilled) which was very good. Maybe it could use a bit more seasoning? The veal (escalope /Schnitzel ) was a bit too soaked I grease. Service was ok! Atmosphere is hard to review because we were the only clients. I do really think the restaurant is better than what we experienced, maybe in the evening? Octopus was great though!

We first turned up at 7pm and the restaurant was empty and we couldn't see any staff so we left and came back at 8pm it was soon busy and buzzing. We chose a seafood platter. Our drinks came first and then after a wait (which is always good in my mind) our platter turned up. Prawns, langoustines, clams, scallops, mussels and lobster. It was enough for two of us and it was absolutely gorgeous, cooked to perfection with the right amount of garlic. It's a meal I have been dreaming of and I will be thinking about it for years to come. We had a dessert after ice-cream and a tiramisu, they were ok but the real winner for us was the seafood platter. The service was good too and the staff were friendly, there was a very nice ambience about the place. I am glad we came back later as it was so worth the while.

It’s rare that I write reviews but they deserved it ! We had an amazing experience here! The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was incredible from start to finish. The staff were so welcoming and accommodating we switched between French, English, and Spanish throughout the evening, and they made everything effortless and fun. They even surprised us with a few extras, which made the experience even more special. We started with the calamari and the mussels , and both were excellent. Then we had the paella, and honestly, it was insane packed with flavor, perfectly cooked, and one of the best we’ve had. Everything tasted fresh and homemade. On top of that, the prices were unbelievably reasonable for the quality and quantity of food we received. We genuinely felt like we were robbing them, so of course we left a tip because they absolutely deserved it. Highly recommend this place if you’re nearby! From a Canadian

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ La Perla del Mar in Peñíscola was an absolute highlight of our trip! The food was simply outstanding—every dish was fresh, flavorful, beautifully presented, and cooked to perfection. You can really tell that great care goes into both the ingredients and the preparation. What impressed us even more were the prices. The quality of the food and service is exceptional, yet the prices remain very reasonable, offering incredible value for money. The staff were fantastic: friendly, attentive, professional, and always smiling. They made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived until we left. A special thank you goes to the lovely Romanian waitress, who was incredibly kind, warm, and helpful throughout our visit. Her positive attitude, excellent service, and genuine hospitality made our experience even more memorable. If you’re visiting Peñíscola, La Perla del Mar is a must-visit. Amazing food, excellent prices, wonderful staff, and a warm atmosphere. We will definitely be coming back! Highly recommended!

We had a truly incredible meal here. The octopus was heaven, cooked to perfection. We had the special offer for two and it was plenty of food and great value. The waiters were doing their best, literally running with the drinks and food to serve them asap. Would happily eat here again.
Svetlana Iakurnova★★★☆☆
The food was okay - nothing exceptional, but decent. Their signature dish, the octopus, was not very enjoyable for us, though the salad and the toasts were good. What really left a negative impression was the restroom: sliding cardboard-style doors that do not lock, and no waste bins at all. This is especially uncomfortable in the women’s restroom.

One of our favourite meals in Peñíscola ❤️ Hidden in the beautiful castle area, this place was such a delicious surprise. The allipebre de pulpo was simply a poem — rich, comforting and full of Mediterranean flavour. The mussels were fresh and absolutely delicious. Dessert deserves a special mention: the coffee flan was great, but the cheesecake with biscuit crumble? WOW. Easily one of the best we’ve had. Great food, lovely atmosphere and the kind of place that makes a trip feel memorable. We will definitely be back!

Didn’t enjoy my “agua de don Simon” (no fresh juice within 3 metres) and the pan con tomato wasn’t even toasted. Fish was ok but nothing amazing. I’ve lived in Spain for 3 years. I’m not an idiot! But was treated as such. Very abrupt waiting staff. You can do better than go here.

Octopus was amazing, you have to try it! Bravas unfortunately not so, for sure would skip them next time. Calamares were really OK. And for sure you have to try vermut. The stuff was very friendly and thoughtful. We got delicious chupito for a goodbye. I'd definitely come back and recommend to others.

What most impressed me was the efficiency of the team working there. Orders exact, quick service, and super friendly. Fabio waited our table and deserves a gold star, Felipe who took our reservation was amiable and called us back to confirm our requested time. The locale is clean, modern, with stellar views, of course. Very good price and quality ratio. Look forward to coming back to see this place again! --Andrew de Chicago

Diner on the outer wall of the town looking out over the sea. With a little imagination you could see yourself in the world of Game of Thrones. But then a little more modern, and with modern service. Personnel was very friendly. Food was prepared very fast and tasted good. Can recommend !

Amazing experience eating here! The service was phenomenal, the pizza was delicious, the beer was perfectly cold. The view is beautiful!! Fabio was our server and he was so nice, familiar, and professional. Definitely coming back!

Ventdesal enjoys a fantastic location in one of the most vibrant streets of Peñíscola's old town, with stunning views over the Mediterranean. The atmosphere is undoubtedly one of the restaurant's strongest assets and makes for a very enjoyable dining experience. The food was good overall, though not quite exceptional. We particularly enjoyed the burrata and the scallops, both of which were very well prepared. The sardines were also tasty, and the pizza Capricciosa was solid. Service, however, was a bit of a mixed experience. While it was fast and efficient, it lacked personal attention. When new dishes arrived, we were generally expected to move our own glasses, drinks, and other items to make space. On a couple of occasions, waiters walked away in the middle of a conversation, which felt somewhat unusual. We were also seated at a table on the street, despite there being available tables in the separate outdoor dining area with the beautiful sea views. Initially, we assumed those tables were reserved, but they remained empty throughout our visit. An interesting commercial decision, although it did not impact us too much since we arrived after sunset. Overall, a pleasant restaurant with a wonderful setting and good food, but service and table allocation could be improved to better match the quality of the location.

You need to experience this place to understand how special it is. The waiters are absolutely amazing people - although the are super busy the talte their time to understand what you want and how you want it. They are the most friendly and tentative people. We manage to visit this awesome place twice - first for sole and turbot then for their lobster paella and it was heaven…. And you must try their Calimare Romano as a starter - homemade and soft. Their sangria is great as well. We’ll miss this little place and return next time we visit Peñíscola. Thank you for such a nice experience

**** In response to the restaurant reply insinuating that we went to the wrong restaurant, we did not go to the wrong establishment. It is in fact the correct restaurant as we frequent Peniscola. They are simply not wanting to take accountability for the awful experience we were shown as tourists in an otherwise wonderfully welcoming town. Instead, Go to Restaurante Brizza or Vista al Mar - Arroces y Tapas for an unbelievable experience and delicious food! Original review: very disappointing experience here after reading the fantastic Google reviews we arrived to an almost empty restaurant at 9:30 PM only to be told by a very flustered and sweaty host that they had not one table available for that evening, and When asked if they take reservations he begrudgingly gave us his card and told us to make a reservation online. Seems like they do not want to serve American tourists and it’s really a surprise in a town where there aren’t many tourists and everyone else is so welcoming.
Maria Ramos★★★★☆
Good food and beautiful, quiet spot. But, we had to wait around twenty minutes to pay the bill, even though we went inside to ask to pay it, which was a shame because our server was very nice and caring up until that. Also we ordered tiramisu that never arrived so it was a 50/50 pleasant experience that turned sour after we finished eating. Again, a shame because before that the service was quick and professional.

Had the Menu del Día today and it was absolutely superb. I chose the calamari to start and the tuna for my main course, and both dishes were beautifully cooked and full of flavour. Excellent seafood at a very decent price. We had a blast with the pulpo menus. The lobster menus had amazing seafood platter as a starter. The lobster rice was a bit too salty and not too much flesh to eat, but still quite good. The wine included in the menus is good. The tiramisus were also delicious, not too sweet. The service was very friendly and efficient, we really enjoyed the meal there!

Restaurante Vista al Mare is worth visiting for the location alone. Perched right beside the sea and the old town walls, the views are absolutely stunning and create a wonderful setting for a relaxed lunch or dinner. The service was excellent throughout—friendly, attentive, and welcoming. We shared several seafood dishes, including the Lenguado a la Plancha (grilled sole), Mejillones (mussels), a fresh ensalada de pulpo y gambas (octopus and prawn salad), and local-style artichokes. The seafood was clearly fresh and well cooked, especially the sole, which was perfectly prepared. The only thing keeping this from being a five-star meal was the seasoning. While the ingredients were high quality and everything was competently cooked, several dishes felt a little understated and could have used a bit more depth and punch of flavour to really elevate them. Overall, Restaurante Vista al Mare offers fresh seafood, excellent service, and one of the best dining views in Peñíscola. If you're looking for a beautiful waterfront meal with quality ingredients, it's well worth a visit.

We got here late one night and was searching for a place that was still open. Our Airbnb happens to be within the castle walls so landed upon La Marinera. Down-to-earth place with good service and fresh food but average. Lots of options on the menu! Good portion size for their dishes. We had a few starters: calamari and ham croquettes, the fried egg with ham and chips, and mixed paella. Didn't get photos of the other dishes except for the paella.

Good quality grilled seafood menu. Mussels could be better... they were quite small but in general, considering it is a highlt touristic town, it was worth it. Including a bottle of white wine and salad, we paid around 80 euros.

After eating at this restaurant my husband got food poisoning, he had lamp chops. The meat was heavily overcooked which could account for an attempt to mask meat that is not fresh. It is a pity because we really liked the waitress, she gave us olives and some liquor at the end free of charge. The poisoning was so bad he puked for two hours and still haven’t recovered after 3 days of eating there…

We arrived with high expectations, buoyed by the restaurant’s glowing ratings and the promise of a memorable meal. That anticipation quickly unraveled with the arrival of the arroz con bogavante. What should have been a rich, deeply satisfying centerpiece instead proved profoundly disappointing. The lobster carried an unmistakable off note more than a hint of something past its prime casting a shadow over the entire dish. Worse still, the rice, the very soul of the preparation, was undercooked, its hard bite a stark contrast to the tender, cohesive texture one expects. The result was not merely underwhelming, but genuinely inedible. It’s rare to encounter a dish where both the star ingredient and its foundation falter so completely. In a restaurant so highly regarded, the misstep feels all the more surprising and unfortunate. On a positive, the wait staff were kind and excellent

It's now called Doss Maress. Hassan, the new manager, is a friendly, kind, and polite person. The "Ricamonte" sauce is excellent with sea bream or sea bass. But the best part is the personalized service and the background music, the sound of the waves off Peñiscola. An experience at a good price with local products. The fish is exquisite.

We ordered a seafood platter and it was very good and a generous portion. The Galician-style octopus came with sweet and hot paprika (I suggest asking beforehand if you don't like spicy food). The only downside was that there was only seating on the terrace and a lot of smoking.

I highly recommend this place. All the seafood and fish is fresh. They told me it was all brought in from the fish market, and it shows in their dishes. The staff are friendly and very attentive, and what could be better than being practically on the beach and enjoying a great evening? I would definitely go back.

Practical Tips for Choosing Seafood in Peñíscola

A great seafood meal in Peñíscola depends as much on how you order as where you sit. Local dining customs, seasonal availability, and menu reading all play a role in getting the best value and flavor. These practical tips will help you navigate the town’s seafood scene with confidence, whether you are a first-time visitor or returning to explore more deeply.

Look for the daily catch, not just the printed menu. The best seafood restaurants in Peñíscola often list fresh arrivals on a chalkboard or tell you verbally. Ask what came in that morning and choose accordingly.

Learn the local names. Species like gamba roja, rape, lubina, dorada, and sepia appear frequently. Knowing a few terms helps you understand what you are ordering and signals to the staff that you care about local product.

Do not ignore rice dishes. Peñíscola sits within the broader Valencian rice culture, and many seafood restaurants excel at arroz a banda, arroz del senyoret, and fideuá. These dishes often feature the same fresh seafood as grilled options but with deeper, more complex flavor.

Be patient with service during peak season. Summer months bring intense demand, especially between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. for lunch. Book ahead when possible, and treat slower service as part of the relaxed Mediterranean pace rather than a flaw.

Check whether the restaurant is open year-round. The places that serve locals through autumn and winter are often the most reliable. They cannot survive on one-time tourist visits alone, so their seafood quality and consistency tend to be higher.

Ask about the origin of the shellfish. Much of the shellfish in Peñíscola comes from nearby ports such as Vinaròs, Benicarló, or the Ebro Delta. Restaurants that proudly state where their prawns, clams, and langoustines come from are usually more serious about quality.

Consider a set menu at lunchtime. Many traditional restaurants offer a menú del día that includes a seafood starter, a rice or fish main, dessert, and a drink. This can be one of the best ways to taste local cooking at a fair price.

Peñíscola’s seafood culture is not about elaborate presentation or luxury for its own sake. It is about freshness, place, and the simple pleasure of eating fish that was swimming in the Mediterranean only hours earlier. The town’s best tables understand this, and they let the product speak clearly.

When you sit down to a plate of grilled langoustines, a steaming arrossejat, or a bowl of fish stew overlooking the old harbor, you are tasting the same traditions that have sustained this coast for generations. Choose thoughtfully, order like a local, and let the sea do the rest.
