12 Best Museums in Perpignan

Perpignan often feels like a city caught between two worlds. With its Catalan flags, ochre-brick architecture, and proximity to the Spanish border, it carries a distinct Iberian soul while remaining undeniably French. This unique cultural blend is reflected not just in the cuisine and language, but vividly within the walls of its museums.

While many visitors flock to the Palace of the Kings of Majorca or the bustling streets of the old town, the city’s indoor attractions offer a deeper dive into its artistic heritage. From classical masterpieces to modern art and curious scientific collections, the museum scene here is remarkably diverse for a city of its size.

Understanding the history of Roussillon is key to appreciating the art you will see. Many works depict the unique quality of light that attracted artists like Picasso and Dufy to the region. A visit to these institutions is often a quiet, contemplative experience, far removed from the tourist crowds.

For art lovers, the range is impressive, covering Gothic primitives, Flemish masters, and the vibrant colors of Fauvism. For families, there are interactive spaces and natural history exhibits that spark curiosity in young minds. No matter your interest, there is a space here that tells a story of this sun-drenched corner of France.

To help you curate your cultural itinerary, we have selected the essential venues that offer the most enriching experiences. Whether you are escaping the midday heat or looking for a rainy-day activity, these institutions provide excellent value and insight.

Here are the best museums in Perpignan that you should not miss.

A solid collection featuring, to me, some hidden-gem artists and cool hidden-gem works by Picasso (who is not even my favourite). The museum itself is nice, well organized and calm. Wholeheartedly recommend!
Rogier Holla★★★★★
Historic art in the heart of Perpignan. The permanent collection is full of contrasts with sections of medieval artwork, art nouveau and modern paintings. The temporary “Picasso & Maillol” exhibition was a real treat
Helen Williams★★★★★
Fab exhibition on Joan Miro, plus some works by Picasso and Dali. Not a lot of info in English
Andrei Petrescu★★★★★
I used the time to do a quick museum run while my parents were enjoying a coffee in the city. At 10 EUR it felt on the expensive side for a mid-sized French town, but the collection justified it. Baroque to modern, well organized, and more to see than I expected, including some Picasso pieces. A pleasant surprise for a solo hour well spent.
Trung-Tin Dinh★★★★★
My visit to the Musée d’art Hyacinthe Rigaud in Perpignan was an unforgettable experience. I had the pleasure of participating in a guided tour focused on the works of Jean Lurçat, and it was absolutely fantastic. The museum itself is a beautiful blend of history and modernity, housed in two historic mansions that have been thoughtfully renovated. The collection spans from the 14th to the 21st century, offering a rich tapestry of art and history. The guided tour on Jean Lurçat was particularly impressive. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, bringing Lurçat’s diverse body of work to life. From his vibrant tapestries to his innovative ceramics, the exhibition was a deep dive into the artist’s creative genius. The thematic exploration of the elements—Earth, Fire, Water, and Air—was both educational and visually stunning. The museum is well-maintained, and the staff are friendly and helpful, enhancing the overall experience. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just looking for a cultural outing, the Musée d’art Hyacinthe Rigaud is a must-visit in Perpignan. The Jean Lurçat exhibition, in particular, is a highlight that shouldn’t be missed.

It's FREE, great museum lots of fascinating things to see in a marvellous old building, it has taxidermy, geology and lots of other things including a real Egyptian mummy, you can easily spend an hour or more in here, great for a rainy day oh, and did I mention it's Free.
John Martin★★★★★
Great experience here... Security guards were especially welcoming! Free for adults and kids to enter. Amazing collection of bugs to keep our boys interested (9, 11, 14). Even had a real mummy on display! Worthwhile visit!

It's free. A very quirky building full of stuffed animals, lots of insects, they also have a MUMMY. I really enjoyed my visit, the young lady on reception was friendly and welcoming.
Phil Corbett★★★★★
Old, faded splendour, dark and dusty museum. I was the only person in on my visit and it seemed really spooky - needless to say, I loved it! I was too scared to see the mummy as it was in a very dark room and I was afraid of the curse. Super friendly staff and well worth a visit. I loved it.
C Chan★★★★☆
Many things packed in a small place. Mainly corals, animals of the land, the sea and in the air, rocks, shells, and a mummy. Free entry. Worth the short visit, since it's nearby the other places of interest in the old town.

The museum is a bit sad, not much to see and doesn’t seem very well maintained, but if your patient and climb all the way to the top of the tower, the view compensates for it. What a view, I was just admiring the skyline.
Steven Clark★★★★★
This is a great visit and only 2 euros each person yes 2 euros, and you get to see this marvellous building on the inside with some interesting exhibitions and pay attention to the old doors and locks, there are a number of stairs located in the turret which are old spiral stairs like in castle's which takes you to the top for a fantastic view over the town rooftops bit of a climb but worth it.
Tracey Bee★★★★★
Great value, a gem of a place to cost visit. The tower affords great city views, which are well worth the €2 entry fee. There's exhibitions on 3 floors between the ground floor and the top viewing gallery, although everything is written in French There's some videos on TVs also giving you insight into local history A must do attraction when you're in Perpignan
King Leung Lee★★★★★
Not a big musuem inside, but we can see different things about Catalan. Also, we can go to the top to see the view of the city. Considering the price is 2€, it is good to come.
Ernita Limpag★★★★☆
Le Castillet is a beautiful historic landmark in Perpignan, and I’m glad I visited. The architecture is charming and it’s interesting to see such an iconic part of the city’s history up close. However, I was expecting a bit more inside — the space is smaller than I imagined, and there’s not much to explore. Still, it’s worth a quick visit for the lovely views and the chance to appreciate its significance to Perpignan.

An absolutely remarkable visit! The museum, already magnificent in itself, is enhanced by the presentation of the various coins and medals, each showcased with precision. But what makes the experience truly unique is the guide: deeply passionate about her collection, she shares her knowledge with contagious energy and incredible finesse. Thanks to her, each piece comes alive, each detail tells a story. A perfect, enriching, and memorable experience. I highly recommend it!

I visited Hôtel Pams on a quiet weekday afternoon and was genuinely surprised by how richly ornate and lovingly preserved this place is. From the façade, it doesn’t shout “luxury,” but once you step inside, the transformation is magical: interior splendour, an onyx staircase, sumptuous murals and lovely art nouveau details. Entry is free
Andreea-Carina Deaconu★★★★★
Loved it. And the fact that it wasn't very crowded on a Sunday allowed me to have a break in the sunny garden. Must see in Perpignan. Also free entry

A must to your visit at Perpignan! The place is so fancy and relaxing. We recommend going to the garden and taking a break there. Also they offer leaflets with plenty of information about the history and the building.

Hôtel Pams is truly a hidden gem in the heart of Perpignan. This historic mansion, built in the late 19th century, offers a unique glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the past. The architecture and interior design are simply stunning, with intricate details and beautiful art nouveau elements that transport you back in time. The mansion is well-preserved and maintained, making it a pleasure to explore. The grand reception rooms, the monumental staircase, and the charming patio garden are all highlights that shouldn’t be missed. The changing art exhibits hosted here add an extra layer of cultural richness to the visit. One of the best parts about Hôtel Pams is that admission is free, making it accessible to everyone. You can easily spend an hour or more soaking in the beauty and history of this place. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to share interesting stories and facts about the mansion and its former inhabitants. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply looking for a peaceful and beautiful place to visit, Hôtel Pams is a must-see in Perpignan. Don’t miss the chance to discover this elegant and fascinating piece of the city’s heritage.

This is not an accommodation but a wonderful site visit! It's actually a house built with marvellous art and care. The family owned a cigarette paper factory right next to this house. The architecture will be surely appreciated. A must visit as you're walking through Perpignan city.

This palace/castle is a very easy 15/20 mins walk from Perpignan Train station and very easy to find on google maps. It’s a huge palace with lots to explore and a no brainer for the €9 fee to get in. There around 14/15 points of interest which are detailed on a laminated map which you can pick up in entrance to the main fort all printed in various languages including English. The steps to the top of the tower is very well worth the 360 degree view of Perpignan and the Pyrenees and there is lots to see about the history and what exactly is what used for and you finish off with the illuminated garden inside a dark room (See it to experience it) which depicts more history and the changing of the times. An excellent place for families and children
woodyacat★★★★★
Amazing castle and exhibits. It is a self guided tour so make sure to walk up (and down) every staircase and step through every doorway. It would be easy to miss things if you’re speeding through.

Palace of the Kings of Majorca, a great visit, the palace was well maintained, it felt totally authentic throughout. I climbed to the top of the tower and got an amazing view. There was a light show in one of the ground floor rooms. Outside the entrance, the pine trees were being protected from processionary caterpillars, which was also fascinating. Toilets good, entry price good.
Fabrício Falco★★★★★
An incredible structure that, as soon as I walked in, for some reason reminded me of the stable at the monastery in Game of Thrones! The “Jardins Enluminés” exhibition was stunning, and inside I felt such peace with the transitions between the seasons. From the top of the tower, you can gaze over all of Perpignan and imagine what it was like in ancient times…. what it meant to be a knight. I loved visiting the church and the King’s chambers. PS: The structure could use more care regarding dust cleaning along the stairs and rooms.

I can understand some comments saying the museum feels a bit old-fashioned, but it truly holds a wealth of information! you can dive as deep as you wish! What’s remarkable is that the items on display are *authentic materials directly excavated from the cave*. You’re standing in front of real remains of animals that lived *thousands of years ago* a rare and powerful experience. I genuinely enjoyed the visit. On top of that, the *staff is very friendly*, and the *library* offers a rich collection of books about *prehistoric caves in France* a treasure for anyone curious to learn more. PS: The drive to the museum takes you through a stunning valley surrounded by hills and it suddenly becomes clear why prehistoric humans chose to settle here. The view over the valley and its wildlife is beautiful, and the high cliffs offered them both safety and shelter. A unique setting that adds meaning to the whole experience.

Excellent. Well worth a visit if you are interested in prehistory. Great dioramas of prehistoric scenes. Extensive collection of fossils and stone tools. No hesitation in recommending a visit.
Fred Navarro★★★☆☆
It was OK. Unless you know about this period of history, you won't necessarily get much out of the visit. It is interesting to see the various displays, skulls, stones, weapons, etc.. Price was reasonable, 8 Euros for adults and 4 for kids. No AC in the building...it was a little bit hot🥵
Elfriede Ringo★★★★★
Look, the place isn't modern at all. They know that too. A new museum is being built right now and it will be ready in 2030. However, this place has something that many more up-to-date musea miss sometimes: passion. When we were here today, we stumbled into a guided tour that lasted for three hours and we didn't get bored at all. On the contrary, as an archaeologist and art history teacher it was a great refresher with sublime add-ons. For my wife it was a great excursion. We highly recommend this place, for the knowledge and passion of the people who work there. Curious about the new project. Count us in as visitors.

This gallery in Perpignan is named after the eminent 20th century cultural theorist Walter Benjamin. The ground floor entrance doesn't inspire confidence; it is in a dingy stairwell that you buy your tickets, but inside is 2 floors of galleries with interesting and challenging contemporary art, mostly European artists. When I went there was an interesting exhibition on the nature of power, with plenty to see and think about. The ticket also gets you in to the modern art gallery in Coullioure, but we didn't have time to visit. It's not the biggest gallery, nor the showiest, but well worth a look if you're in the area.

We made an appointment to visit the Bella doll museum and were welcomed by Alain, its heart and soul. It was a wonderful visit, with Bella dolls from every era, all in perfect condition. The machines, the head molds, the hair implantation techniques—everything was described to us by Alain. Remarkable for his dedication, and very interesting when he spoke about the workings of the factory (he was, of course, part of it) and the heartbreak caused by the end of Bella, Alain deserves to be congratulated, recognized, and thanked for all the time he voluntarily devotes to preserving our heritage. I highly recommend this visit! And a big thank you to Alain.

A large collection of Bella dolls dating back to its creation in 1946, if I remember correctly 😀 The museum is actually a single room. The only downside is that there's no one on hand to tell you the history; you have to read the articles or look at the photos. The founder's daughter was there and answered questions, thank you to her. Visits are by appointment only (no specific day).

A pleasant visit. The gentleman giving the tour is very kind. He shares his experience as a former employee of the company. The gentleman volunteers his time. He explains the different stages of assembling my famous Bella doll very well.

Essential Tips for Visiting Museums in Perpignan

To make the most of your cultural exploration, it helps to know a few local logistics. Many museums in the region operate on a "French schedule," which means long lunch breaks and specific seasonal hours, so a little planning goes a long way. Here is how to navigate the scene like a seasoned traveler.

Check for "First Sunday" Free Entry: Many municipal museums in Perpignan offer free entry to the public on the first Sunday of every month. If your travel dates align, this is an excellent way to see premium collections without spending a euro, though expect slightly larger crowds.

Look for the "Pass Intermusées": If you plan to visit three or more major sites, including the Palace of the Kings of Majorca, ask about a combined ticket or city pass at the first venue you visit. This often reduces the total cost significantly compared to buying individual tickets.

Plan Around the Siesta: While less strict than in Spain, many smaller museums and galleries close for lunch, typically between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Plan to visit in the morning or late afternoon, and use the lunch window to enjoy a long Catalan meal nearby.

Bring a Light Layer: The south of France is hot, but older historic buildings used as museums often maintain cooler temperatures to protect the artwork. A light sweater or scarf will keep you comfortable while viewing the exhibits.

Verify Accessibility in Advance: Because many of these institutions are housed in historic medieval or 17th-century buildings, elevator access is not always available. If you have mobility concerns, call ahead or check the official websites for specific accessibility information.

Exploring these cultural havens offers a welcome balance to the outdoor café terraces and market squares. They provide context to the region’s complex identity, showing how history, politics, and art have intertwined to create the vibrant Perpignan of today. Taking the time to step inside these historic walls will undoubtedly make your visit to the capital of French Catalonia far more memorable.
